March 2019

Ebb and Flow E

ACH MONTH I find different themes come to the fore in HT. Sometimes it’s music or art, other times it’s charitable actions and events, sometimes it’s farming , occasionally it’s health, and so on. This month seems to be sprinkled with environmental stories and activities. This is especially poignant to me, as I recently heard the following from a friend, who I am quoting now. “My heart broke a little this morning ... my youngest son overheard one of his big brothers talking about climate change and the disrupted state of this beautiful planet. He came to me, threw his arms around my waist and burst into hot tears. He said, 'I wish I had never been born' and cried and cried. I told him there are good people everywhere who are doing everything they can to bring our Earth back to thriving. He looked up into my face with his big blue eyes and said, "But not everyone is doing it are they?" And I had to say no, not everyone is doing it. I rubbed his back and told him that what he can do is to love the Earth and encourage others to love and care for the Earth.” Our children and grandchildren need to see us taking

action for a thriving sustainable future – their future. So, I was relieved that the ebb and flow brought positive reminders to HT (and our facebook page) for March. We have the WILVOS, who are rescuing and nurturing animals, tree planting for koalas in Witta, expos for wellbeing and sustainability, a young Maleny local using art to express her environmental concerns, hinterland markets using local produce; birdwatchers bringing awareness of our feathered friends; and BioBlitz at Mary Cairncross studying rainforests and how to protect them. Of course, we have plenty of entertainment on offer through the month, a humorous cricket reunion, a page of wonderful poetry from writers across the Range, letters about Mungo, sport, health and much more. But the most important message comes for Michael Leunig, who we send positive thoughts to as he recovers from an invasive melanoma. I would like to dedicate his cartoon, The Glimmer (on page 24) to my friend’s son, and everyone who is doing something, however small, to bring hope and healing to our planet.

Mapping out

Maleny I

N 2015 COUNCIL opened the Maleny Trail, but just prior to opening they realised that they needed a free map to be available for the community and for the education of visitors. Past President of Hinterland Tourism, Angus Richard, explained to HT how this map progressed. “Time was limited, so it was considered that an external resource would be able to move faster than Council services to create a map for the opening date.” Through a number of contacts, TripTick Tourism Consulting was chosen to produce a simple map, with whom Angus had a strong relationship. “I’d also created and still produce a number of tourism maps of the Hinterland for the Tourism Association,” Angus added. Thanks to wonderful local input from Peter Milton and the Maleny Community Information Centre members a basic map was produced, with the assistance of Angus. “Cr Jenny McKay generously arranged for Council to fund the initial design and print run,” Angus added. Initially only distributed through the Hinterland and Glasshouse Mountains information centres, the map’s popularity meant funding was soon necessary for additional print runs and updates. “Council were happy to kick-start the design and initial print run,” Angus shared, “but felt that the local community needed to show support for the initiative as it moved forward.” The ever supportive Rob and Sam Outridge from the Maleny IGA Supermarket were approached to seek sponsorship of the map, and to their great credit they agreed at once.

Above: Maleny Trail Map Right: The Maleny Trail Map is supported by Rob Outridge of the Maleny IGA

Now through three such updates and print runs they have sponsored some 30,000 copies. The Maleny Trail Map is now sought after across the coast and is distributed via Sunshine Coast Brochure Display to some 400 brochure racks when stock allows. The 2019 version of the Maleny Trail Map is about to go to press with the latest updates and once more the support of Maleny IGA Supermarket. Angus said, “The trail is a brilliant asset for Maleny, the visitors just love it! Rob and Sam are an equally brilliant asset for Maleny. Their ongoing support ensures the Maleny Trail is becoming a ‘must do’ attraction bringing people to the area.” He continued with a grin, “Of course this truly generous sponsorship activity is only possible with community support for Rob and Sam’s IGA. With the money they plough back in, I’m stuffed if I know why anyone shops elsewhere!”

Mapleton Springs

to the rescue

HT’s Victoria McGuin recently heard about Rachel and Philip Aspinall who, as members of WILVOS (Wildlife Volunteers Association Inc.), are regularly nursing and rehabilitating rescued wildlife on the Range. A list of their daily feeding schedule is enough to make your eyes boggle, and they look after everything from tawny frogmouths to squirrel gliders to wallabies. It was time for a visit!

RRIVING AT Mapleton Springs B&B, I was greeted by sweeping views into the Echidna Creek Reserve and up towards Flaxton. The land also has a slice of history with remnants of the old tramway running through the property. The B&B itself is certainly inviting, with a heated, infinity edge pool, cinema room, therapy sauna and heated spa, communal lounge with open fire and, separate from the main house, three ensuite bedrooms. I was ready to book a weekend escape on the spot! However, the most impressive thing about this place is the people who run it. Rachel and Phil Aspinall moved to the area two years ago to start their B&B business and, alongside this, rescue local wildlife. (They are also both active members of the Kureelpa Rural Fire Brigade and Rachel is a member of Nambour SES.) Rachel explained, “My teaching contract ended and I remembered a friend who worked for WIRES (Wildlife Information, Rescue and Education Service Inc.) in Sydney. I wondered if there was something similar here, and after some research I found WILVOS.” Operating for over 25 years, WILVOS now has approximately 290 members who volunteer their time to rescue, rehabilitate and release wildlife to the local native fauna. There is also a dedicated hotline which operates 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year. (07 5441 6200) “When we joined WILVOS, we attended a range of courses full of useful advice about the animals and there is also a lot of support from a large network of experienced volunteers, local vets, the RSPCA and Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital.” The animals come from various areas, some have fallen from trees, some hit by vehicles, others attacked by larger animals, and many hurt by barbed wire. “I see ‘Land for Wildlife’ signs on properties surrounded by barbed wire. available, but most of these properties don’t even have livestock that they need to contain. “Such needless suffering for the wildlife, when all it takes is the owners to remove this barbaric and unnecessary fencing. Seeing an animal hurt or dying due to a barbed wire injury is horrific.” It’s feeding time, so Rachel heads to the kitchen to prepare the bottles. First up is Crystal, a tiny red-necked wallaby rescued from Crystal Waters, whose little paws wave as she drinks. Ginger is next, a wide-eyed ringtail possum from Mapleton, then Dax, a brushtail possum, followed by Gillie, a squirrel glider who was found malnourished and dehydrated in Hervey Bay. Finally, Billy, a tiny squirrel glider found at the bottom of a telegraph pole in Peregian Beach, is brought over, cosily wrapped in layers to keep him safe and snug. “Billy hit 25 grams today, so we’re super excited about that. He has just opened his eyes in the last day. I feed him from a 1ml syringe, and he just licks a drop off.”

All of the animals melt your heart, but I fall in love with Myrtle, a swamp wallaby who bounds up to the door, hoping to come in and say hello. (There are two Eastern Grey kangaroos, Snowy and Monty, hopping about nearby.) “A man rang the hotline to say there was a dead wallaby on the road in Buderim and that there was definitely movement in the pouch - he had to leave but left a witches hat from his Ute to show where she was. We found the baby, a pinkie, in there. “She was only 400 grams, so we took her to the Woombye vet to get her assessed. I asked Charlotte to name the joey. She came up with Myrtle explaining that Woombye means black myrtle.” The couple tend to look after more kangaroos and wallabies than some other volunteers, as they have an enclosure. “The Department for the Environment’s code of conduct dictates the minimum enclosure sizes and fencing regulations which limits suitability for many carers.” I heard another rescue story about Dax, a beautiful brushtail with large trusting eyes, who you just want to cuddle. “A couple found a dead brushtail and thought there was a joey in the pouch, so Rosemary Dax, who’s 83 and been a volunteer with WILVOS for a long time went and picked up the body, but she said ‘I’m not comfortable with getting a baby out the pouch’. “Rosemary is an amazing lady, she’s still driving around and taking calls on the hotline and she’s also very, very knowledgeable about birds. So, I drove down and the dead possum was in her laundry. In the pouch I found a little pinkie, we named her Dax, and now she’s much bigger and looks so healthy.” Rachel and Phil receive a small subsidy from WILVOS, but mainly pay for the formula and medication themselves. “The biggest expense is petrol; we may drive to Flaxton and then down to Australia Zoo. There’s a lot of driving involved.” I asked about whether they find it difficult to take a break with all the animals to feed? “I remember once I had to go to a doctor’s appointment in Brisbane,” said Rachel, “and we had six animals in the car, a flask with warm water for feeds, tissues, all sorts. “Phil had to wait in the car in the shade somewhere while I went in. But we managed it! If we have to go away for longer, there are other volunteers who kindly take over for us for a while.” These two are clearly devoted to the wildlife, but they have a large concern. “Our B&B is quite new, and we really need to build up our business. If we can’t make it viable, I will have to go back to teaching and we won’t be able to look after all the animals.” I could see the disappointment in Rachel’s face – caring for these animals is a huge part of her and Phil’s life. I, for one, will be encouraging friends to visit Mapleton Springs B&B, so these two can keep on saving the animals who need them. To find our more about WILVOS or Mapleton Springs B&B, visit wilvos.org.au or mapletonsprings.com.au, both are also on Facebook. Video footage available on HT’s Instagram page.

WILVOS volunteers, Phil and Rachel Aspinall, welcome human and animal guests at their beautiful B&B in Mapleton!

MANDA LOVES FOOD, from the paddock to the plate, and believes it is important to get kids into the kitchen more. “Kids are 100% more likely to eat things they had a hand in preparing, like my daughter, Harriet, will chop the mushrooms for our spaghetti bolognese and she sits on the stool next to me and we have these amazing and different chats when we work side by side in the kitchen. However, despite her culinary and blogging success, a couple of years ago Amanda was dealt a heavy blow when she was told she had Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Deciding whether or not to share her story and diagnosis was a big decision for Amanda and her family. “I muddled around with whether I would blog about it or not. In the end I thought being self-employed I was actually in a unique position where I didn’t have to worry about being the first on the to-be-retrenched pile when I told my employer, she said. This was something that was one of her driving factors to reach out. Thankfully, being farmers, they are their own employers. A small blessing in an otherwise devastating time for their whole family. “The first things you think about when you get diagnosed are I want to grow old with my husband, I don’t want to be a young person in a nursing home. It is the first stages after diagnosis that are the hardest according to Amanda. “The information at first can be so overwhelming and you just don’t see a lot of young people represented or still living their lives as they were planned. You tend to only see the very heavily disabled people. As a young person with MS, and a farmer and mother as well, she realised she was exactly the kind of person more newly diagnosed young people needed to see. She made a decision to help people feel less frightened and overwhelmed by sharing her experiences and personal story. “I’ve got MS, but it isn’t changing my life right now, words Amanda is choosing to live by. She also strongly wants people to know there are so

many variants in each case because everybody progresses differently, there is so much unknown at the time of diagnosis that you need to just keep positive and be practical. “It is not as terrifying as it first seems, the treatments have come so far in the last ten years, the people that have been diagnosed the same time as I, have a much better prognosis than people say 20 years ago, she said. Amanda received her diagnosis when she realised something was very wrong. “I started to lose my sight out of my right eye and every morning it got worse. Then my colour vision went as well. Every morning I would wake up and it was a little bit worse. It was pretty frightening. difficult and Losing colour vision was especially upsetting at the time for Amanda as she does so much food styling and photography. Amanda knew she wanted to share her story as she

would have loved to have read another young person’s story at the time she discovered she had MS. “I wrote about my experience on my blog and it reached so many people. I thought if I just helped one person that would be really cool, but I started getting a lot of messages.” Turns out she was inspiring lots of other young MS sufferers and their families.

After a really hard time, things are now looking much better for the hard-working farmer who makes a pretty spectacular pavlova. “I found a treatment that is working. It is all back [her eyesight], it now looks like we will actually lead the life we always planned on, so I thought I should write a few posts that also took the ‘fright’ out of it for others and were more like, now that you know what you are dealing with, let’s get on and deal with it. “I am so pleased I did choose to write about it because I reached people that found comfort in my writing. I have had so many emails,” she said. Amanda wanted to show newly diagnosed people that there are people out there with the disease who are still living their life too, not everyone is in full time care or heavily disabled. She describes it as like saying, ‘you’ve got MS but you are still getting on with life’. “It takes away so much of the fear people can feel when they are told they have MS.” People can find Amanda, her recipes and farm stories and also the cookbook through her blog www.cookerandalooker.com and on Facebook at Cooker and a Looker.

Copyright protection is provided under the Copyright Act 1968 and gives exclusive rights to license others in regard to copying the work, performing it in public, broadcasting it, publishing it and making an adaptation of the work. Rights vary according to the nature of the work. Rights for artistic works, for instance, are different to those for literary and musical works. Although making copies of copyright material can infringe exclusive rights, a certain amount of copying is permissible under the fair dealing provisions of the legislation. Andy Pether is a familiar face around the streets of Maleny, often with a big smile on his face and plenty of energy in his step. Through his Live Foods venue, he has had the opportunity to share his passion for health and love of plant-based fresh food with customers and the community. We farewell him this month as the café closes its doors and he shares his story from being overweight and unhealthy to energetic, nutritionally conscious and full of life.

Life lessons through Live Foods

ORN AND BRED IN Western Australia, Andy Pether is the local owner of Live Foods Café and Restaurant on the Landsborough-Maleny Rd in Maleny. He migrated to the Sunshine Coast when he was 35-years-old for family reasons and worked in the security industry, designing security solutions for corporations and government agencies. “The pattern I had created was a sedentary corporate lifestyle. Combined with my poor eating patterns it led me

to obesity and a shock heart attack at just 39 years of age,” Andy shared. “The pain was like a spear coming through my back and into my heart. I headed off to the doctor and was referred directly to the hospital.” The pain continued and after being admitted to the hospital, there were lengthy tests and the results then confirmed it was a heart attack. “I sat there at just 39-years-old amongst men much older than me in the waiting room and waited for my results. It was a really painful, difficult and confronting time,” admitted Andy. “After I was released back out of the hospital, I met up with a buddy who was eating a plant-based diet and he

gave me ideas on how to change my eating patterns and showed me a video which changed everything for me.” First Andy changed to a vegetarian diet and stayed with that for two days before choosing to go completely vegan. "I started out and thought I may as well go the whole way and choose vegan and then I began to learn even more and incorporated a lot of raw food into my diet. That is when I saw really big changes." After two years of eating raw food, he had completely rid himself of his preexisting conditions and no longer needed regular medications for heart disease, reflux or asthma. “I felt fitter, younger and energetic from head to toe and my strength and stamina increased in every area of my life.” Andy felt the drive to share what he had learned and opened his first Live Foods Café on the Montville Road. “It was a successful spot with plenty of local and tourist traffic. The business logo was designed by my former partner, Laura, and represented my combination Making plant-based pizza of heart focus and fresh food designed around health on a plate,” Andy explained. a good innings

The beer was cold, the pitch was hot and there were yarns aplenty at the 50-year reunion of the Maleny District Cricket Association (MDCA) at the Maleny showgrounds on January 19. In their heyday, the Maleny cricketers were a formidable force, claiming one of Australia’s most notable sportsmen – Otto Nothling – as one of their own.

by Judy Fredriksen

RICKET BECAME AN Australian pastime almost as soon as the First Fleet finished unloading at Sydney Cove and was eagerly played by the early settlers of Maleny and surrounds. From elite players who’ve been privileged enough to wear the baggy green cap for Australia, down to the backyard novice who scores a six by simply hitting the ball over the fence, cricket reflects many of our national values – sportsmanship, competitiveness, fun and mateship. And there was plenty of this in evidence at the MDCA reunion which was attended by more than 50 people, many of the team members now aged in their 80s. Former MDCA president and chief event organiser, Ian Fleiter of Conondale, says Maleny used to have a very strong association.

George Diefenbach, Harry Porter and Bob Hawkins find their names in a 1962 score book and are relieved they didn't get out for a duck that day

“We had teams from Conondale, Teutoberg (now Witta), Landsborough, three teams from Kenilworth, three teams from Maleny and even a team from Baroon Pocket which is now under water. We would play every weekend for six months during the season and we played against teams from Stanley River and Maroochy.” Fellow organiser Don (Barney) Houston of Kenilworth produced several news articles dated 1903–4 from the Nambour Chronicle telling how matches were organised 100 years ago. “They rode their horses to the cricket match and would have to cross the Obi and the Mary River numerous times to get there. If the team was a man or two short, they would stop at farms and pick up a couple of players on the way,” chuckles Barney. “It might take them half a day to get there and sometimes they would stay the night.” The temperature at one Kenilworth game in February in

1904 was “109 degrees in the shade” while the horses “were treated with a good feed of corn and chaff”, according to one news article. The highlight of the reunion was the anecdotes delivered by Len Lowe, all-round cricketer, of Maleny. “One day Tom Jobling was playing and the players were all racing around the field and all of a sudden everyone had to stop because Tom lost his glass eye. Someone found it, and he put it in his mouth to wash it then put it back in his eye and away he went,” says Len. Len describes how he and his brother Bert would train at home on their farm. “We learnt to hit sixes pretty early because the grass and scotchies were about six foot high; we couldn’t hit the ball along the ground. Anyway, we had an old cattle dog that we trained to retrieve the ball. But of course, after a while the dog would get hot and race off down the creek to cool off, and we’d have to chase after him to get the ball back.”

Len recalls playing at Green Park, Conondale where they would have to check the grounds for plover’s nests before they began and shove a stick in the ground to mark the spot. The grounds were never mowed or slashed, so they would find themselves playing in long grass, amongst both wet and dry cow pats and Scotch thistles. And no reunion is complete without a story about pranks. One night some young blokes came home from a dance in the early hours of a Sunday morning and phoned the coach – a married man – from a phone box to get him out of bed and ask his advice whether they should bat or bowl if they won the toss later in the day. Needless to say, the coach was not happy! The greatest cricketer to come from Maleny was Otto Nothling, an all-round athlete who also excelled at rugby union, javelin-throwing and shot-putting. After playing cricket for New South Wales and Queensland, Nothling was selected to play for Australia in 1928, replacing the young (Sir) Donald Bradman, who was dropped to twelfth man, for the Test against England. At the end of each cricket season, there was always a great success to celebrate and the presentation balls were a grand affair. Former secretary of the association, Harry Porter (though he confesses his wife did most of the work!) lists a slew of celebrities who would travel from Brisbane to Maleny and surrounds to judge the belle of the ball and present the winning trophies. “We had Channel 7 personality, Jill Edwards, come up once and Lyn Cope who was Miss Queensland. Then there was Don Tallon – Australian Test Cricketer and Clem Jones, Brisbane Lord Mayor,” says Harry. Sadly, lifestyles changed and the MDCA folded in 1969, though Maleny still has a cricket club which now plays with the Sunshine Coast Cricket Association. Many of the current Maleny team are descendants of the old MDCA and were there in force to support ‘the oldies’. Despite their advancing years, all had such a good time they are determined to do it all again next year. “We don’t want to wait another two or three years,” says Ian Fleiter. “We want to get together again while we still can.” Sounds like these champs have quite a few more good innings left in them and intend to set a mean pace for the young ‘uns to follow. Howzat!

IRD WATCHING has been a popular hobby in the United Kingdom for decades, possibly even centuries. Australians have been slow to take up ‘birding’ despite the fact that we have some 800 species of incredibly diverse, unique and beautiful birds. But it is changing!

B

With the increasing interest in birds, better camera equipment, and the readily available networking possibilities, birding has gone to another level for many. Binoculars, camera and computer have now become standard kit for serious birders.

There are now birding groups, clubs, individuals, and formal organisations all over the country. The Blackall Range area is no exception, if you live here, then you are in one of the best places in Australia to go outdoors and enjoy the birds.

Maleny resident Paul Fraser is but one of the new breed; a Born-Again Birder! Upon retiring and settling into the quiet Range life he decided on birds as his new quest. His aim? To put as many birds as possible within his camera frame.

Thierry is back in the café!

Paul admits, “When I started I was keen but I didn’t know that much and when I moved to Maleny I didn’t know many bird watchers.”

This is where the computer came in; Paul started a new Facebook page called Blackall Range Birds and almost instantly created a community of like-minded people from all over the Sunshine Coast. Here they can post their pictures and talk birds. Created just over a year ago, the page has nearly 500 members. And, like Paul, many enjoy taking photos and learning more about their birds. If you would like to learn more about birds, the Blackall Range Birds Facebook page is a great place to start.

SCARS is the Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge (Sippy Creek Animal Refuge Society Inc), which was established in 1979. The Refuge is an independent, non-profit, charitable organisation and has a non-euthanasia policy. They also run education programmes for the community on responsible animal ownership. Over the last 40 years, SCARS has saved more than 40,000 dogs and cats from a terrible fate. The Refuge is managed by an unpaid, elected committee, and run by a small staffing compliment and a large dedicated group of volunteers. The Refuge operates from a 1.08 hectare site at Sippy Creek Road, Tanawha and accepts cats and dogs from the Sunshine Coast Council Pound after owners cannot be traced, and from private surrenders. People, Plates and Places are known for hosting a relaxed, outdoor communal dining experience set on a long table in uniquesettings. baking five years ago, after enrolling in a short course in sourdough technique. Katie became fascinated with the process which required a lot of patience, nurturing and love. She refers to her sourdough culture as her “baby” which like all babies needs regular feeding and a stable, comfortable temperature to thrive. after much experimentation with different flours and ingredients Katie has come to a point of ‘wonky’ perfection and her sourdough loaves must be up there with the best. She is non-compromising in her sourcing of the best quality ingredients, recently discovering the Gunnandale Mill in nSW that both grows and mills its organic wheat. Katie explains that the fermentation process of sourdough, when done properly, sees the protein in wheat broken down to a much more digestive-friendly state. Katie’s generous nature saw her turn a recent disaster, when her temperature setting failed leaving a batch of sourdough flat and despondent, into a positive. Katie made the bread batch up regardless, baked the breads into flattish loaves and delivered them to a homeless shelter in nambour where they were gratefully received and enjoyed.

Travels with… Rensina

A brief drama in Latvia W

e FLY FROM MOnGOLia to spend two weeks working on the Gaz 66 Russian truck outside cold wet Helsinki. at last we turn the truck south for our journey from Finland to Jordan. Folks prepare for winter and we share the rural roads with hay laden tractors, horse drawn carts and gypsy wagons. We wild camp in forests amongst carpets of wildflowers. By Lake Vortsjarv, we are able to get our first hot shower in 16 days in the ‘closed’ van park. We drive through Latvia, a tiny country and almost at the border of Lithuania. The rural roads are built up high as the surrounding land is boggy, forested or farmland. allen drives over to the side of the road and within a split second the front right wheel drops a metre and we tip; on a very scary and precarious angle. i look straight down into a three metre gully and feel panic engulf me. The truck is tipping and i instinctively clamber up, over allen and climb out of his door. He does not move; can not as he 'is' the balance, possibly stopping the truck from rolling over. My gut feels sick as the reality of the situation sinks in. We are in trouble. We are on a weeny country road with no one in sight. The back wheel is off the ground and she's just hanging there; the front differential has buried itself into the mossy

ground. The truck is leaning on her front axle, sinking and creaking. every time i look at the truck, it seems to have slipped further towards the abyss and the end of our trip. if she goes, she'll roll over and crash. allen being inside the cabin is positively sickening to my stomach. a black four-wheel drive stops and a young, well dressed man gets out. Speaking with a thick accent, he says "Hello, i see you hev prroblem and we in middle of nowhere, yes?" He wanders around to the back of the Gaz shaking his head, calmly smiling. "Which country you come vrom?" he quips. “australia” “ah, i hev zister in Brizbarn. is Russian truck, yes?" i nod nervously. "no prroblem," he says with a big grin, “Russian truck not break, very strrong, i vill get zome help forr you, okay?" i tell him he is an angel as his car speeds off down the road and is back in 15 minutes. "Farmer vill come wit de tractor when virk is finished...maybe vun hour. Tractor is strong. i go now. Heppy travellink." i thank him as he takes off, waving enthusiastically. Heck! One hour! That’s forever! There is nothing to do but wait. The tractor’s one big headlight flashes in the distance.

The 40ish year old farmer jumps out. He's gruff, unhappy and shakes his head when i ask if he speaks english. He speaks loudly on his phone and a big, cheery-faced, younger bloke in blue overalls arrives. i can see by the farmer’s hand movements to the other man that he is worried that if the truck starts to go over, that it may drag the tractor with it. as the men discuss it there is heat in the conversation. Finally the boss farmer makes another call and within minutes, the mother of all tractors turns up. The young bloke driving it speaks some friendly english. The boss man climbs aboard the tractor and maneuvers into position, and hooks the tow rope onto the back of the Gaz. allen cannot get his door open so he squeezes out through the window. The tractor pulls back and slowly drags the Gaz back onto solid ground. i breathe a huge sigh of relief. i approach the farmers with 100 euros but the young english speaker shields me from the other two men. "Please take this money.” "no," he says “Fifty is enough, keep this money," and he hands me back one note. "Please thank them for us. You are very kind," i tell him. He assures me with a smile and a wave as i climb into the truck, then comes over to my window. “By the way," he asks, "What happened?" i shrug with a smile. What could i say? i needed a pee and allen pulled over too far? We move off towards our journey south to more adventures, grateful for the wonderful, warm people we meet.

uR daiLY major newspapers tend to reflect the political leanings of the owners. We can agree or disagree with that which we read. Mungo Maccallum is not beholden to any editor and can praise and criticise political parties and politicians of all persuasions. We don't necessarily have to agree with all he writes but a viewpoint different from our own doesn't hurt us. Please keep his column and let us all be open minded. Ian Pollock, Witta

LOVe Mungo’s irreverent iconoclastic rants! it’s so refreshing to read a different opinion. if dr Lewis (Hinterland Times Letters Feb 2019) wants the conventional political point of view, i suggest he can read Rupert Murdoch’s opinions in the Sunshine coast daily, The australian, the courier Mail or almost every small local newspaper in australia. The Hinterland Times readers ‘voted’ to keep Mungo’s column a couple of years ago. We enjoy his slant on things, and don’t need another writer to counter his analysis. We are bombarded with the counter point of view in almost all our other media outlets. Fiona McGill, North Maleny

CORNER The Bunya Trees

Grew up in a leafy Brisbane suburb By a sleepy Brisbane River; That eventually would burst its’ banks Cause the populace to shiver. My childhood was idyllic Blithe – with not a care; Concerts. Picnics, bushwalking, Loving family – always there. But I do remember World War II, Children playing in the trenches; An American invasion To strengthen our defences. I loved to play my violin, To scribble verses – at aged eight; Inherited my father’s genes Of always running late. (But hopefully took Mum’s advice To be obliging, kind and nice.) Then came the vibrant Fifties, And the word was Immigration; And migrants came from war-torn lands To merge into our Nation.

The Bunya Range this place was called when Tom Petrie came to see the festival of many tribes called to the Bunya tree. The harvest waited patiently as the cones matured and grew, and, with their falling, tribes were called and friendships made anew. They came from many days below and many moons ahead, intent to find the bunya nut laid on the forest bed. No longer enemies, they came and shared the peace-filled fruit; marriage agreed, deep things thought out to which all contribute. Today the hardy trees grow tall, dark leaves reach sharp and high, resplendent with five hundred years of history standing by. ©Deanne Lister

I wed a man from Europe Working on the Snowy River Dam And our children- multi-cultural Learned of other lands. We raised three children-went to work, Bought Hoovers, hoists and Holdens; I re-joined an orchestra, And life was really golden. The years rolled by and widowed, Lured by mountains, lured by mists; Met a wond’rous man called Kevin And life is utter bliss. Now we sit and mellow in the sun, Enriched by lifestyle- family- friends; I’ve had a most enchanted life And love shall never end. © Lisa Plucknett

Poetry is an arrangement of language, artistic word pictures that attempt to inspire imagination, evoke emotion and provoke humour. Poets are illustrators of words that create beauty and intensity, and the HT is proud to give them a platform.

The Dragon’s Head The dragon’s head lies among the gladioli fire extinguished eyes glazing in the morning sun burnished scales flat and grey the slayer perplexed by the emptiness of the moment looks to another god for an answer and the answer appears like ripples in parchment skin on warm milk sighs in a vacuum blushes of the full moon smiles in the evening words washing with each ebb and flow of his own heart beat the dragon’s head lies among the gladioli why does the slayer weep? © John Kerslake

Fair Trade this heart of yours has followed me through airports, customs, seven different time zones burned three times its weight in fossil fuels chasing my chaste heart. but I’ve grown up now, grow my own at home now less carbon debt always tastes better than regret can’t waste emissions on omissions any more. this heart of yours skips immigration, visas, import tax this heart of yours jumps borders when the other side is greener sweeter cheaper doesn’t stop to pay the debts it racks up doesn’t stop to sweep its tracks up, doesn’t stop to give back what it takes; it takes and runs—this heart of yours, this capitalistic heart of yours, this sweatshop trading heart of yours: free but never fair

Ukulele Maleny ukulele were just one of more than 100 uke troupes having fun at the Blue Mountains ukulele Festival in February, reputed to be the largest of its kind in the southern hemisphere. The Sunshine coast ukulele Festival, now in its sixth year has continued to grow rapidly from its inception in the pretty Mary River town of imbil in 2014. With the crowds growing each year, the Festival was relocated to the historic hinterland town of Kenilworth in 2016. continuing the growth trend, the showground at Kenilworth is filled to near capacity during the four-day festival and prospective attendees are encouraged to book a camping site early. alternatively, Kenilworth is no more than an hour's drive through picturesque countryside from anywhere in

Maleny Ukulele leave audiences smiling, with impressive instrumentation, clever arrangements and sweet vocal harmonies.

the Sunshine coast, so a day out immersed in the dulcet sounds of a thousand ukuleles is no bad thing. Maleny ukulele is always a very popular act at the Festival where each time they perform, there is a debate about who had the more fun – Mu or the audience. The group is comprised mostly of amateur musicians from across the hinterland, and beyond. They are led by acclaimed Maleny musician and music teacher Tom Richter.

Tom is always in great demand at ukulele festivals for his ukulele workshops, all of which are fully subscribed. Tom will be conducting his workshop again this year at Kenilworth.

“W

Hen iS THe best time to plant in the hinterland?” is a question i often hear and (although it could be rightfully pointed out that i have a conflict of interest being in the nursery business) my answer is that on the hinterland, with the benign climate that we are blessed with, that there’s no time better than the present to, but as always there are a few important factors to take into consideration. Soil moisture is crucial for plant establishment, the roots of your planted stock need to quickly move from the confines of the potting mix that they have been established in and into the soil (and moist soil is crucial for this process). For the bulk of the year when the high temperatures are below thirty degrees and the soil that you’re planting into is mulched, you may find that you don’t need to water after planting. i often time my plantings at home for rainy days and save having to water at all (with the added benefits of a mud bath by the end of the day). in your garden you’ll probably have access to unlimited water for most of the year, so maintaining soil moisture is not an issue, just make sure you don’t over water and drown your plants, you need moist - not wet. The risky time for soils drying out is spring and early

Forest Heart Local Native Plant Nursery 20 coral St, Maleny Phone: 5435 2193

summer, but we do generally get just enough rain and mulching keeps soils moist and cool even when temperatures get over the mind thirties. Beneficial supplements include water crystals to maintain soil moisture, anti-transpirants to reduce water loss from your planted stock, mulch, mulch, mulch and tree guards for tubestock. Frost is perhaps the biggest obstacle to establishing plants on the hinterland. a year or two of good growth can be burnt or damaged if a severe frost hits. not all plants are frost sensitive and we have many frost hardy local natives that can be planted any time of year. even frost sensitive plants can be planted once the threat of frost has been beaten by the shade and protection of more frosthardy species. Frost damage in our area primarily occurs due to the plants thawing too fast when the sun hits them first thing in the morning. Planting in very frosty areas in spring, after the last frost, can be beneficial to establishing your stock as it allows the maximum growth period before the next frost hits. in the garden any time is a good time to plant. For more advice of what’s best to plant and when, visit us at Forest Heart.

anuaRY WaS dRY and February rainfall was down despite historical records suggesting otherwise. in today’s world, past records are not necessarily a guide to the future. However, February has been dry in the past and a short but relatively intense rainfall event did top up the water tanks. We in Se Queensland were fortunate to escape the extremes experienced in the north and our hearts go out to members of landcare groups in affected regions, plus of course graziers and the people of Townsville and other communities. Some rain generated by cyclone Oma would have been useful here but cyclones are notoriously unpredictable. With a bit of luck March may bring cooler temperatures. Plant growth has not slowed noticeably with decreasing day length and established trees are powering ahead. it’s a time to get outside, enjoy our environment and admire the colourful tip

growth on many shrubs plus the insects they attract, including those all-important pollinators; moths, bees, beetles, flies and many others. a diverse environment is a healthy environment, so maximise the diversity in revegetation projects. Barung has plenty of tubestock from which to make choices for your environment and soil type. a beautiful large tree presently in stock is White Beech, Gmelina leichhardtii. This was a popular and heavily harvested timber tree in the past and tubestock was hard to find 20 years ago. Fruiting trees with purple and white flowers followed by blue fruit have since been located and germination problems solved. include one in the revegetation. Given the recent low rainfall, it’s time to pay attention to relative weed growth. different weed species often favour different soil types and moisture levels and are a reasonable guide to where your new trees will establish more quickly.

choose dry area trees for the drier soils. Overall weed growth will also be an indication of soil moisture levels. Sometimes there is quite a distinct line marking a transition zone. even keeping an observant eye on the weeds has its uses.

YcLOne OMa turned out to be a non-event, but it gave me yet another opportunity to observe trees interacting with severe weather. One of the main reasons we didn’t see much tree damage was that there was no rain to accompany the strong winds. The rain makes everything heavier, increasing the likelihood of limb failure, and softens the ground to increase the chance of whole tree failure. Rain also seems to weaken and soften dead, dry timber. it is magical and poetic to watch a large tree or stand of trees dancing in gale force winds. it is then that all the structural defects, faults, dead and diseased parts are exposed.

The dancing is how the tree disperses the mechanical load of the wind, in quite a beautiful and complex way. This is why it is important to have some understanding of these forces and functions when you prune a tree. Trees have evolved to cope with wind. at the extreme cyclone-adapted end of the scale you have the tropical palms which simply lay over as the wind strength increases, then stand back up again once the storm has passed. i have only ever seen one palm fail in wind, a cocos palm, Syagarus romanzoffianum. at the other end of the scale you have the Gums, liquid ambers, coral trees, and Wattles which are all quite snappy.

two days in the witness box by one of the toughest silks in the business, while Pell chose, as his right, to offer no testimony and thus no cross examination. He can hardly complain that the process was unfair.

The big one was that it was finally revealed what anyone remotely interested had known for weeks – that George Pell had been convicted of child abuse and the media, frustrated for weeks by a suppression order, piled in.

and given his record in office, in which he consistently favoured profits over parishioners – look no further than the ellis defence, designed to prevent victims to sue for compensation – he can hardly claim to play the holy martyr. What goes around comes around, even in the cloisters of the Vatican

So the assertion that Pell is a paedophile is no longer an allegation – it is a legal fact, which can only be overturned by a legal appeal. However, this did not faze the zealous christian soldiers defending the man. They said they accepted the verdict – they could hardly do anything else. But without drawing breath they added that they didn’t really believe it, and zealously rehashed the case for the defence, which had been unanimously rejected by a jury. and if that was not enough, they looked for a conspiracy: the Victorian police, and in particular the media, some of which had reported on the investigation and charges, had made a fair trial impossible. Their own media campaign, insisting that their man was totally innocent of everything, was apparently entirely appropriate, although in the end ineffective. But their outrage was unbounded – a couple also invoked Jesus as an analogy of judicial persecution, which must surely border on blasphemy for a true believer. an appeal is pending, so unlike the cardinal’s crusaders we will not comment too much – except to point out that the complainant of the abuse was grilled for more than

and the suppression order on the verdict may well have been made for the best of reasons, but even the most sheltered judge must have realised that it was utterly futile in these days of the internet. Once its mere existence was mentioned, it took me just five minutes to discover the details. and in the process, i felt a nagging sense of deja vu, which i traced back some fifty years ago, long before the days of the internet, when another suppression order spectacularly failed. it was the time of the 1969 election, when Gough Whitlam was pursuing John Gorton in what turned out to be a surprisingly close result. a key marginal was the seat of adelaide held for the Liberals by andrew Jones, the youngest member of the House who had been swept in by Harold Holt’s landslide in 1966. Jones was brash and bumptious – at one stage he had been forced to apologise to his fellow MPs for calling them “half drunk half the time”. The irony was that Jones himself quickly became a lush, and one night during the height of the campaign did a

thorough job on himself, and was subsequently arrested and charged with driving under the influence. He was duly convicted, but the sympathetic magistrate suppressed his name from the media. However, beak’s writ ran only to the South australian Border, enabling the Melbourne age to trumpet the poster: andReW JOneS naMe SuPPReSSed. What had been a local issue became a national embarrassment. unsurprisingly, Labor won the seat. it will be interesting to see if Pell is more successful in his appeal; but you would have to say that the suppression order has not helped him. censorship seldom does – it is more likely to encourage publicity than quell it. a lesson both lawyers and judges would do well to ponder. But the Pell verdict has consequences not just for the church and the law, but also for politics, as the cardinal is not only a prince of the church, but an inflexible cultural warrior. and this means not only is he a hard-liner on matters of what are generally called morals, by which the right regards as overwhelmingly about sex, but also on more general issues, one of which is climate change, on which Pell is vehement denier. On one level that is not surprising: the catholic church has never been a great supporter of science – think Galileo and darwin just for starters. and like most of his more reactionary predecessors, Pell has always assumed an air of infallibility which has encouraged many other recalcitrants, particularly in the Liberal Party room. His fall is unlikely to change their minds, but it has removed one of their sources of authority. and this may have implications for Scott Morrison’s most recent attempts to hose down the perennial quest to pacify this most fraught of issues. His announcements last week were almost universally derided; another reboot of Tony abbott’s so-called direct action plan, which Malcolm Turnbull rightly called a fig leaf to cover the fact that the coalition didn’t really have a policy at all. So Morrison threw in a bit of extra foliage. There was the funding of Turnbull’s Snowy 2.0 which might actually help, but not until Morrison and his crew are long gone, far too late to deliver a lower power price. and there was the promise of an undersea cable from Tasmania to the mainland to harness the hydro already provided to the island state, which was immediately dismissed as unviable, short of a major change away from coal-fired generators, a revolution which is never going to happen under the regime of our coal-cuddling prime minister. So, as last year was confirmed as the hottest ever recorded and the highest emissions, with more to come, the climate wars go on, but without one of their most unyielding warriors. Morrison did have one win – the appointment of the immaculate ita Buttrose to the aBc, a captain’s pick which was almost uniquely applauded. But he also had another loss – his beloved football team, the serially offending cronulla Sharks, were fined a motza for cheating on their salary cap. Well, you can’t win them all.

Making the most of

T SeeMS TO Be on trend for patients to undergo expensive treatments to have teeth implanted when they are missing just one or two teeth. However there is a pain free, cost effective and far less invasive way to fill in those gaps.

March

Valplast is a flexible resin that is guaranteed to be stronger than the conventional metal framed or acrylic denture. Valplast dentures can be made a lot smaller and thinner than other types of dentures due to its flexibility. The resin also has a lifetime warranty against breakages of the resin. The materials used in a Valplast flexible denture are metal and toxin free which is perfectly suited to the variety of natural conditions of the mouth and a great holistic option for your dental wellbeing.

There are fewer appointments needed to have a Valplast denture made and teeth can be added on to your existing Valplast denture if you lose more teeth in the future. This means that it is also a cost effective investment. ne OF THe MOST common reasons people see their physiotherapist is hip pain that extends down the leg. The pain increases when walking, climbing hills or stairs, and gets in the way of a decent night’s sleep. What was once (mis)diagnosed as bursitis is more likely to be tendinopathy – that is, damage or compression of the tendon; not inflammation. in place of stretching and massaging, modern treatment involves activation of deep hip muscles and targeted weight-bearing strengthening, which includes the use of the TWS slider. it is the invention of dr alison Grimaldi from the university of Queensland whose Phd focussed on conditions of the hip including Gluteus Medius Tendinopathy. Things nOT to do for hip pain: ● rest completely – it decreases the ability of the tendon to take load ● passive treatments – in the long term, the tendon needs to be able to take load ● injection therapies – unless you have not responded to an exercise-based program ● ignore pain – exercise within the boundaries of pain ● stretch tendon – this adds compressive loads damaging tendons ● massage tendon – if tendon is already irritated, massage can worsen the pain and ● take short cuts with rehabilitation – tendons needs to build strength and capacity again. if you are concerned about any pain, consult a professional.

It’s probably true that for most people, sight is our most precious sense. Have you ever stopped to think about how amazing it is that we can see at all? Most of us know that light enters the eye and gets focused on the back of the eye, with or without spectacles. From there that image is transferred back to the occipital part of the brain where it is processed, a little bit like the old camera where the light fell on the film of the camera, like the retina, and then you had to go the kodak shop, like the occipital brain, to process it and get a photo. But when you think about the number of interactions that must take place perfectly for the visual system to work, it truly is amazing, I think. Firstly, the eye ball must be in focus for a clear image to fall on the retina. Next the retinal cells must have the ability to detect light and turn it into an electrochemical impulse which is then sent down billions of optic nerve fibres to a part of the brain that can somehow miraculously decode those impulses and turn it into a form that is the same as what exists in the world. Incredible. The degree of intelligence of the system, as most bodily functions, is huge, an engineering masterpiece. As an optometrist, all I do is put a slab of clear plastic in front of the eyeball to give it a little helping hand and nature does the rest. Pretty easy in comparison to the sophistication of the visual system. A very precious sense indeed. At Maleny Optical, we do the easy bit, but we do it well. We have the facility to supply you with the very best lens options to suit your individual needs.

nSTead OF SeaRcHinG for the magic bullet herb or latest super food to ward off illness and strengthen immunity, simply Wendy Rosenfeldt living in accord with the daily cycles of nature has powerful benefits on general health and wellbeing. Getting up in the morning, eating meals, exercising and going the bed around the same time each day helps the physiology to maintain regular appetite, elimination, energy, hormonal cycles and balanced emotions. if you are always changing your daily rhythm, your mind and body exert a lot of energy just trying to maintain balance. The value of a regular routine is enhanced when we follow the daily pattern of the doshas as understood by ayurveda. Vata time of day is 2am – 6am and presents the Vata qualities being light, quick and changeable by nature. When we wake up before or around 6am we experience this exhilarating quality. We feel more alert if we get up before or around 6am, than if we sleep in to Kapha time (6am -10am) with its heavy, slow, stable qualities. Kapha time is good for physical exercise or anything that requires moving, lifting, travelling, etc. This physical activity offsets and is balanced by the steadiness of Kapha. Pitta time from 10am -2pm displays Pitta’s fiery characteristics of dynamism and metabolism. it is best to eat the main meal of the day around midday when the digestive fire is at its strongest. if we delay eating at this time, we tend to get irritable or spaced out. if we wait until 2pm or later to eat, the digestive fire is weaker and we may feel that however much we eat we are simultaneously unsatisfied and but yet weighed down.

Word medicine

W

changeable, light Vata time comes round again between 2pm and 6pm. When Vata is out of balance in the physiology this increase in Vata can give us a slump in energy and a craving for sweet or salty, warm, heavy foods to offset the airiness of Vata. We may also lose concentration and feel ready for a sleep. Having a warm drink, some sweet fruit or nuts at this time can help to balance Vata. Between 6pm and 10pm Kapha’s heavy, stable qualities are back. it is best to eat a lighter meal for dinner and to avoid cold, heavy, sweet food at this time. ice cream, yogurt, cheese and chocolate may be favourites for dessert, but they increase the cold, sticky, heaviness of Kapha causing dullness or congestion in the morning. a short walk after dinner can help to stimulate the digestive process. For a deeper sleep it is best to go off to bed while Kapha’s steady influence is still present. if we stay up past 10pm we experience the dynamic qualities of Pitta and literally ‘fire up’. We start to feel more alert and may even get hungry again. Pitta time at night (10pm-2am) is the time that our cellular metabolism takes place. The process happens best if we are asleep and not digesting a large meal. We wake up feeling lighter and mentally clearer when Pitta has had the chance to purify our physiology, ready to get up in Vata time and enjoy the day. Spartan Race comes to town

T

He SPaRTan Race, which originated in the uSa, is becoming popular across the world, and involves a series of obstacle races of varying distance and difficulty ranging from three miles to marathon distances. Rachel Lockman, who runs Get active Fitness and Personal Training in Maleny, has been keen to enter a ‘Get active’ team into the Spartan Race for the last few years, but has been a little apprehensive. “This year i thought, you know what let’s just do it!” Rachel told HT.

Rachel has emphasised to everyone who has entered in the team that they don’t have to be the typical image of skinny, fit and fabulous to join.

“i got online and entered a team and was so excited to find that this year’s race is going to be held in our home town of Maleny.

“We are going to do this together and we are going to help each other get over that finish line. all the people that have entered our team are current members of ‘Get active’ so they train with me at a variety of the group fitness sessions per week.

“i have entered our ‘Get active’ team into the race, not to win but to give real people a goal to work towards together as a team, to get healthier, fitter and to give them the motivation to create an overall better lifestyle.”

“coming close to the lead up to the race i have been doing extra training sessions outside of these groups, specifically aimed at the obstacles and the running involved in the Spartan Race.”

Rachel and her team in training for the Spartan Race Image Karen Muir

The group has been using the local parks and steep hills of Maleny as their training ground. “it has been tough and some of our members are very scared, but i will make sure we as a team get there together,” Rachel smiled. For more information or to register for the April Spartan race, visit spartanrace.com.au. Also see the Get Active Fitness ad on page 9.
