Input and impact

P

uttiNG toGetHer tHe June issue, i noticed with great pleasure the amount of contributions from hinterland groups and guest writers, as well as our regular Ht writers. We have tom Mcdonald with his illuminating piece on the Little Montville Bookshop, Jamie Walker with his valuable insight on protecting owls, Sarah Williams sharing how her audiobook with Myles Pollard came about, and painter Wendy edmond on her life as an artist. Add to that the letters and poems you send me, and i feel quite warm and fuzzy! My only hope is that we can encourage the younger members of the hinterland through our Ht Young Writer of the Year Award. remember, you still have four weeks to send in your story/prose/comedy sketch! (Parents, grandparents and friends, encourage your young scribes and school mates to take the leap of faith – they can submit anything from 100 – 600 words.) Looking back, May was quite a month, including the highly enjoyable Fashion and Flowers Morning tea at the Maleny Showgrounds and the Glasshouse Small Business Awards – always a hoot. (Check our Facebook page for pics.) there was also an election, and i know people who are joyful and also despairing about the outcome. during this time, i heard a very illuminating conversation with social commentator, Charlie Pickering, that i'd like to share, in part.

Australians are often told that our contribution to global emissions is too small for us to do anything to help, but if you take all the other countries who, like us contribute 2% or less to global emissions, they actually make up 41% of the world total. So, together we can have a major impact. An example was made, which resonated with me. in World War ii we made up 2% of Western Allies fighting overseas, but we didn’t decide not to fight because we were too small to make a difference. We took pride in doing our part because the consequences of doing nothing were unthinkable. i can’t help but think this is another of those moments in time. regardless of people’s political (or climatic) beliefs… why not strive for a cleaner, healthier environment? Well, i know i will try my best anyway, for our future generations, whether my political allegiances are red, blue, green or rainbow! on that note, i wish you all an optimistic June and, as ever, let me know your thoughts, stories and events. this is your Ht, and the team and i love having your presence in the pages. enjoy.

MAKING NEWS

A regular royal romp! L

overS oF LiGHt opera and musical comedy always await the Maleny Singers season with anticipation, and this year is set to again provide a feast for the senses, with a production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Gondoliers. Set in venice, and in the mythical kingdom of Barataria, the story involves a stolen prince, two venetian gondoliers and their beautiful brides, a pompous duke and duchess, and a sinister Grand inquisitor. this strange crew experience a range of uproarious misunderstandings before the obligatory happy ending! Jim Flatt is hilarious as the pompous yet henpecked duke of Plaza-toro, who is completely under the thumb of his firebreathing duchess (Jenny Keys), and their beautiful but haughty daughter Casilda (Sarah-Jane Abbott). With the family having fallen on hard times, the duke proposes to float himself as a corporation with the intent of raising funds by selling access to their social status to unsuspecting lesser mortals! they contrast amazingly with the determinedly republican gondolier brothers

(Colin dunn and Chris Ward) and their new brides (evalee Sharples and viera Keogh). the gondoliers are shocked when the sinister Grand inquisitor (ian McMaster) informs them that one of them is heir to the throne of Barataria, was secretly married as a child to Casilda, and then stolen away, disguised as a gondolier’s son. With the King dead, the gondolier can claim the throne, but the problem is that he doesn’t know which of them it is. unravelling this complicated mess makes for classic Gilbertian satire, which, when accompanied by Sullivan’s beautiful melodies, creates some of the cleverest and most poignant numbers in the show. those who saw last year’s production of Iolanthe will recall the magnificent costumes, which added so much to the visual splendour. the Singers’ Musical director, Margaret taylor, has again sourced a number of the costumes from the G&S Society of WA, and they are spectacular. do not miss this musical treat! the show will be on at the Maleny Community Centre, June 15, 16, 22 and 23. tickets from trybooking or the Maleny information Centre.

o CeLeBrAte reFuGee Week 2019 the Sunshine Coast refugee Action Network (SCrAN) is coordinating a Community Film Festival. Five different films will be screened at seven venues across the Coast, sharing stories of refugees and people seeking asylum. Beginning in Maleny on Saturday June 15, films will then be screened throughout the week in Caloundra, Buderim, Sippy downs, Nambour, as well as eumundi and Noosa. of the five films in the Festival, four are documentaries by Australian directors and one is an Australian comedy, The Merger. they hold stories of courage and resilience and the films are variously heartwarming, inspiring, uplifting or surprising, and all are thought provoking. the Festival finale is on Saturday June 22 with a free screening of The Staging Post at the university of the Sunshine Coast. the film’s director, Jolyon Hoff, and refugee Week Ambassador, Muzafar Ali, will lead a discussion and Q&A session after the film. refugee Week is an initiative of the refugee Council of Australia. it has been celebrated nationally every year since 1986 and includes World refugee day on June 20. the aim is to create better understanding between different communities and to encourage successful integration, enabling refugees to live in safety and to continue making a valuable contribution to Australia. While most of the Community Film Festival events are free, seats are limited. oWN A tree-LiNed street, in the beautiful town of eudlo, lies Caz owens’ unique rose farm, the only chemical-free certified rose farm in Australia. When you arrive, you are immersed in the natural tranquillity, surrounded by the sounds of the birds, bees and many insects living there. this is no ordinary farm. there are no cleared fields or mass-produced rows, it is a natural-style farm growing in harmony with nature. Set on a beautiful bush block where the integrity has been kept largely intact because of Caz’s unique approach to farming. “i have a real biosphere which looks after itself, even with little finches that land and eat the insects directly off the roses. it has been a combination of organic processes, bio dynamic practices and permaculture, she said. the wildlife plays a massive part in the healthy ecosystem, even native frogs love the roses.

“As the frogs start breeding, they actually live in the roses. When you harvest, you will pick up a rose and be looking at it and realise there is a little baby frog inside. they sleep in here of a night time and during the day they go back into the undergrowth. it’s beautiful and that happens every autumn and spring,“ said Caz. You can’t help but notice the number of bees here, highlighting what a healthy space this rose farm is.

thrilled. the recognition is really lovely. And an absolute highlight for me is also that i am going to be meeting some of Australia’s best rose breeders, i am really excited.” the organic roses are exquisite, and they have amazing heady fragrances like a rose should. “their fragrances even change with the seasons, with the winter and the spring. they smell stronger in the summer,” Caz shared. “the real english roses think our winter here is their summer, hence we end up with these beautiful, vibrant colours - and it keeps the bees very happy!” Happy bees and a healthy ecosystem - let’s hope Caz’s style of farming is an inspiration for others.

“i have many different bees, i don’t know the exact, entire extent but i know i have the big teddy bear bees, a giant black one with a bright yellow bum, the blue-banded bee with the beautiful turquoise stripe and of course all the little natives, and we have little native nests all over the place,” smiled Caz. “the native bees and the honey bees all get on together too and they don’t fight or anything, it’s really lovely.” Bees are an essential part of a healthy farm according to Caz, “You have to have the bees and i’ve noticed over the years that they even change the colours of things,” she said. “the cosmos has come into more yellows and a lovely orange. When they pollinate, they do influence what a flower is like. it is really, quite interesting. there are other little beneficial insects that pollinate too, but the bees are the main guys, so we need to look after them.” Caz’s unique style to farming has drawn plenty of attention to her farm, including a brush with Hollywood fame. When producers of Aquaman decided to have a scene with roses, which included actress Amber Heard eating a rose, they went looking for organic, spray-free roses, and they found Caz, with her Sunshine Coast farm. Now you can see her beautiful roses in the Hollywood blockbuster. the ‘Aquaman roses’ are a striking, stand-out,

After a successful corporate career that ended with a frightening health scare, Caz made the life-changing decision to move to eudlo and pursue her great love, growing flowers. “i began growing roses organically and it was very successful and i now have over 1500 roses on the property.” these are interspersed with an array of spray-free edible flowers and organic herbs that Caz also sells. “Many are used as dried edible flowers by restaurants and for weddings and are extremely popular.” As you drive through the farm on Caz’s buggy you are framed on either side by these edible flowers including cosmos, chrysanthemum, dianthus, verbenas, geraniums, all growing amongst the roses and natural bush and intermingled with fragrant herbs like basil, lavender and rosemary. it is strikingly picturesque and heady on the senses. A highlight in her farm’s journey was having the Chemical Free Farmers Association approval. “they came out and tested my soil everywhere. it was exciting!” in 2020 Caz will be a guest speaker at the NSW rose Society, rose Championships and Annual Conference. “i am speaking from an environmental perspective and i am

MUCH ADO ABOUT EASEMENTS An easement is the right to use another person’s land for a stated purpose. It can involve a general or specific portion of the property. An example of where an easement can benefit a property is where John owns a tract of land that borders the a national park which is a popular area for bushwalking and fishing. Mary lives next door to John, but her land does not adjoin the national park. To avoid trespassing, she must access the national park by walking or driving to a public entry point. Instead, John grants Mary an easement allowing present and future owners of Mary’s property to cross John’s land to access the national park.

Eddie and Linda Vann will be hanging up their Naval hats at the end of the year

You see them on parade every Anzac Day and Remembrance Day, confident in their crisp ceremonial whites, proudly bearing the Australian flag as they march by with military precision. For over 20 years, the TS Centaur Naval Cadets have been providing Maleny’s youth with opportunities in leadership, selfdiscipline and teamwork, turning youths into responsible adults.

How does an easement effect the person who grants it? The landowner who grants an easement usually cannot build structures within an easement area or use fencing that would hinder access. Other activities might also be prohibited. It is therefore important that before you a purchase property you know where all easements are located and what restrictions are associated with them. Easements can affect property values – consider these examples: • Several easements on one lot of land might seriously limit the choice of building sites. • High tension power lines running through an easement near an otherwise great building site can be unsightly. Resale values may be affected since many people feel that living too close to power lines is a health risk.

by Judy Fredriksen

B

ACK iN 1995, three old salts – John Wenban, eddie vann and Grant Hammer – decided to start up a navy cadet unit in Maleny. recognised as an official unit in January 1997, the Maleny unit, tS Centaur, commemorates the Australian Hospital Ship Centaur which was sunk off Moreton island in 1943 by a torpedo fired from a Japanese submarine. As a result, 268 lives were lost. At present, the unit officers, eddie and Linda vann, have 16 cadets, both male and female and aged 13–18, under their stewardship.

“the cadets is basically a youth club in uniform,” says eddie. “We train them in teamwork, leadership, communication, social integration, but we do it with a maritime emphasis... and we do water activities – kayaking, sailing, power boating. “Cadets get opportunities to visit royal Australian Navy (rAN) ships. earlier this year two tS Centaur cadets flew to townsville and spent four days on HMAS Choules. “We sail and kayak on Baroon Pocket dam. We have a boat shed down there where we store our boats. Kayaks we store at our unit and take them down as required. “in the next couple of weeks there is going to be an opportunity for cadets above recruit rank to do a power boating course.” in this course, cadets learn how to drive a powerboat. But activities are not limited to the water; the cadets enjoy bushwalking, rifle shooting, drum band, parade

• Buyers may simply not like the idea that others have a right to use the land in some way. Don’t assume that because an easement is not currently being used it will never be used. As long as an easement is registered on the title of the property there is always a possibility that the individual who benefits from it will decide to enforce it.

activities and organised camps with other units. they also compete in the National Sailing regatta in Sydney. “We had winning crews two years running,” beams eddie. “We’ve got a well set curriculum that takes them through from recruit to seaman, able seaman, leading seaman, petty officer, chief petty officer and each of those has their own set course with a task book that they work to,” he says. the results are impressive as demonstrated by the cadets on ANZAC day every year when they carry out their duties as the Catafalque party mounted on the Maleny rSL Cenotaph. one of the most exciting opportunities for the cadets is securing a voyage on the Young Endeavour, the national sail training ship. the Young endeavour Youth Scheme has been recognised internationally as a leading youth development program. “the sail master trains them and at the end of their ten day voyage, they can take a turn at being captain, first lieutenant, etc. and run the ship for 24 hours,” explains eddie. overseas exchange programs are also on offer, with annual exchanges available with Canada, New Zealand, united Kingdom, and the united States. “We have a cadet who in June, is going to America on a cadet exchange,” says eddie. Some of the cadets go on to enjoy a career in the navy or military and even those who don’t, derive other benefits from being in the cadets. the discipline and confidence they acquire through the program helps them to become ready for future employment. “We can give employers a report of their time of service, and a reference,” says Linda. “that gives them a start with job seeking. there’s not many opportunities for them to

get a reference when they are looking for their first parttime job.” For eddie and Linda, the rewards of working with the cadets are altruistic. “You get a lot out of seeing success stories with kids,” grins eddie. We’ve had kids on the autism spectrum and the parents have come to us and said, ‘what a difference you’ve made!’”. Linda adds, “We’ve had kids who have come along and they’ve been either problem kids or on the verge of getting into something serious, and they’ve ended up being great cadets. they just needed that focus and structure. the rAN provides all cadet uniforms and covers the cost of many activities so the cost to parents is minimal. After being at the helm for the last nine years, Linda and eddie have decided to disembark from the tS Centaur Australian Navy Cadets at the end of this year and focus on other commitments. they would like to hear from anyone who may be interested in taking over. if you love working with teenagers and enjoy seeing them achieve, this could be an opportunity for you. it’s not mandatory to have military, naval or a defence background though it would be an advantage. ideally, the cadets need three people, at least one male and one female. other useful skills would be experience in sailing, outdoor activities, computer, administration, management or training. eddie and Linda would be available to assist throughout a transitionary period and invite anyone interested to join them at the tS Centaur unit in the Maleny Showgrounds on Wednesday afternoons after school. their telephone contacts are: 5494 3290 or Linda’s mobile: 0402 060 050.

His Excellency, the Honourable Paul de Jersey AC, Governor of Queensland has accepted the Maleny Cultural & Historical Society's invitation to visit the Pioneer Village to open the historic farmhouse Glenferna on June 15. The Society’s Heritage, Research and Publicity Officer, Desley Malone, shared with us the journey in managing the project and how the community has brought Glenferna to life.

He MALeNY PioNeer village became the new permanent home on the evening of May 25, 2016, for a local farmhouse with a long patchwork history of 113 years. the Society welcomed Glenferna to the fold to become a new School and Post office Museum. “the farmhouse has an interesting history. it was built on the first land selection in Maleny, a 790-acre selection which was subdivided," explained desley. “one portion was sold to three thynne sisters and part of this portion is now Mary Cairncross Park. the other portion (480 acres) was where edward thynne built Glenferna in 1903

and farmed. Glenferna receiving office was registered to receive mail from 1904 to 1912.” the house was sold to Andrew Beacom and in 1915, it became the home of Arthur and Mary Cork and their 11 children for almost 40 years. desley continued, “their eldest daughter, Blanche, married ernest e Pattemore in 1916, which links Glenferna to Fairview, Maleny’s only State Heritage House and the Pattemore family home.” Glenferna was sold from farmer to farmer until it became an art union prize farm in 1976. the winner leased the house and farm separately for decades until the house was recently sold and donated to the Society by Brian and Leone McFarlane. desley has been observing the care and attention bestowed on this historic house for many years. “For three years, Glenferna has been undergoing restoration here. the outstanding support from the community through time, skills, grants, fundraising and donations is what has brought it all together.

“Grants from the Gambling Community Benefit Fund and the Sunshine Coast Council played a large role in our goals with Glenferna, we are so thankful for their support," desley smiled. “the telecommunication Museum will include the history of the mail service to Maleny, M.S. 373 which started c1890 and sharing of local stories. the School Museum will include memorabilia from the many small schools that closed down within the district Blackall range (Wootha), Witta, North Maleny, Bald Knob, Curramore, Booroobin as well as the Maleny State School, river School. Maleny High School and the Ananda Marga “i felt we needed somewhere to help people remember these little schools as they carry a lot of history and memories, desley shared, wistfully. “Glenferna arrived here needing a lot of love to reach the display stage. there were structural issues, rainbow-coloured walls and worn floors. Clive Powell almost single-handedly painted the outside and inside of the entire house. As he painted, he saw the difference and said that he just couldn’t stop until it was finished. this house has clearly had an effect on those who have worked on the restoration, some to a great extent. “Clive is also our hardworking gardener and landscaper and he has the gardens looking outstanding through months of hard work. “Project Manager, ed Lawley, has donated over 420 hours of tradesmen. plus many hours of labour by his team Murray and Preston roberts and ross Sinclair are descendants of edward and Lilly thynne and have contributed to the restoration. desley continued with the grateful acknowledgments, “Site Manager, Bernie Gilbert and Clive Powell, tom Malone, Ashley Williams and over 60 volunteers, many from the Men’s Shed have all contributed. Bernie Gilbert has been onsite almost daily for three years, truly an outstanding contribution. the generosity didn’t stop there. “We have been very that fortunate with gifts. A rosenstengel dining room suite had been stored for decades in a farm shed, has found its way to the Pioneer village. “it is now in Glenferna where it originated and has been restored by Ashley Williams and reupholstered by Brian Watson. “Sharon Fitzgibbon has enhanced the front door with a stained-glass window and matching transom. Ashley Williams gifted a large glass and mirror pharmacy display cabinet, c1910, and Clive Powell has gifted a beautiful 1870 Spanish chandelier for the front entrance.

the fully insulated Glenferna has a secret modern room tucked away under the existing patio roof line. Hidden away is a climate-controlled archive room which has been purpose-built to museum standards and structurally reinforced. “We wanted this important feature to store and preserve Maleny’s history for future generations. With a Sunshine Coast Council grant, we purchased a compactor, an air conditioner, a freezer and we are establishing the archive, desley shared. “the archiving process is exciting as it is our way of connecting Maleny to the world via the internet and searchable archives through the eHive system. Museums, societies and private collectors worldwide use the system to catalogue and publish their collections online so they can be accessed globally. “We are fortunate to have a Nambour Christian College student, Will davies, electronically cataloguing the books and records in our archives. His excellency the Honourable Paul de Jersey AC, Governor of Queensland and Mrs de Jersey will visit the Glenferna farmhouse on June 15, but the work to create the museum display will continue over the next period. “the museum part of the restoration to tell the story of the schools and telecommunication to the district is yet to be displayed, added desley. “it is a huge project that we have undertaken, we continue taking one step at a time to completion with the generous help from the community, Sunshine Coast Council, fundraising and grants. the house; the “First, we saved and restored next step is securing funds to display the museum. We built this project with the community, by the community and for the community to preserve our history. You can help safeguard the future of Maleny’s history by making a donation to the Glenferna project via the Maleny Historical Society’s website at: historicalsocietymaleny.com

Green Book Winner of the 2019 Oscar for Best Picture, Green Book takes us on a concert road trip of the American Deep South in the 1960s with Don Shirley, a composer/ pianist, and his driver. This film shines a light on racial prejudice, as we enjoy superb performances, and great scenery and music. Rated M

Outspoken

N tHe YeAr that celebrates 30 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall, it is perfect timing to bring Anna Funder to Maleny for an outspoken event. Before turning to writing full-time in the late 1990’s, Anna worked as an international lawyer for the Australian Government, focusing on human rights, constitutional law, and treaty negotiation. After jettisoning her legal career to write Stasiland, she jobbed for a time as a radio and television documentary producer at the ABC. Stasiland describes the period Anna spent in the former east Germany, after the wall came down. it tells the stories of people who heroically resisted the communist dictatorship

of east Germany, and of people who worked for its secret police, the Stasi. Shortlisted for many awards in Australia and Britain, in 2004 Stasiland won the world’s most significant prize for nonfiction, the Samuel Johnson Anna Prize. Hailed as ‘a masterpiece’ Funder and ‘a classic,’ Stasiland has been Image Gaby Waldek published in 20 countries and translated into 16 languages, adapted for radio and Cd in the uK and Australia. outspoken presents Anna Funder in conversation tuesday June 25, Maleny Community Centre, 5.45pm for 6.30pm, tickets $22, $15 for students, booking essential. visit: trybooking.com/book/event?eid=498530&

ALWAYS KNeW Maleny was a special place, filled with amazing people and a great community spirit. it was what drew us here to live, two years ago. So, when i heard that Myles Pollard, my favourite ryan brother from Australia's most popular tv drama, McLeod’s Daughters, would be attending this year’s Milkin it for Charity event at Maleny dairies, it seemed like fate was sending me a message. You see i’m an author of Australian romantic fiction. My bestselling outback series Brigadier Station is often compared to McLeod’s Daughters and fans of the show usually become fans of my series of books. i remembered Myles from the show, and i remembered his voice. the authentically Aussie twang and his unmistakable bass-baritone. He would be the perfect narrator to take my books into the audio market. on the day of the event, in between gumboot throwing and cheering for the winning cow, i asked Myles if he would be interested and he said yes. Within a week he had auditioned, and contracts were signed for him to start on my first published book The Brothers of Brigadier Station. Now, with the audiobook finished, we are planning a book tour together where we will meet some fans and even teach some workshops together on the process of making and narrating an audiobook. Myles is keen to perform the three other books in the Brigadier Station series, so we are trying to find time between our other projects to get back into the studio.

WINTER TOP TIPS

Woman at War From Iceland comes this quirky eco-thriller full of surprises - co-written and directed by Benedikt Erlingssen, who illustrates the action with the music of an ever-present folk choir. A heart-warming production on many levels: drama with a happy and surprising comedic side. Rated M

WINTER COATS - A well-fitting pet-coat/jumper shouldn’t restrict movement, covering from the neck to the base of the tail & stomach. Remove coat once in a heated environment. BETTER BEDDING - A raised bed, & placed out of the way of cold drafts with an extra blanket for warmth & comfort. THE GREAT INDOORS - Have your pet inside on those cooler nights, alternatively provide a kennel with dry cozy blankets. KEEP MOVING - Brave the cold & go for a brisk walk or play indoors with soft toys to get the blood moving. SENIOR CARE – Colder temperatures can aggravate joints stiff with arthritis. Be mindful of keeping a healthy exercise regime during winter. Have a managed plan- Supplements, Medications, Injections.

Mary’s Story Cycle

W

itH A NeW book “Sundowner of the Skies: the story of Oscar Garden, the forgotten aviator, being published, Mary Garden is pinching herself to see if this is a dream. the Sunshine Coast Hinterland has always had a magnetic attraction for Mary. “it’s where i found my tribe. i love the greenery and cycling around Maleny. “in fact, the week i was moving into my new house, i got the acceptance letter for my book, Mary smiled. Mary first moved to Maleny in 1989 but left in 2000. But it wasn’t until she moved into a beachside fibro shack near Bundaberg that Mary found her writing groove. “one of the articles i wrote was about my father, oscar Garden, and his aviation career, and it was printed in the Financial review in April 2005, Mary said, incredulous. “even though i told people i was writing, i don’t think i really believed it myself for a long time. “i do love writing, but with this story, i had to write it. i couldn’t get on with my life until i had. My half-sister was a huge help as she had kept a lot a material, Mary shared. “i really didn’t know how famous my father

Mary Garden takes to the hills

by Jacqui Hensel

was in his time. My mother used to say he was just big noting himself. She really downplayed it. “My father was an unknown novice, who didn’t really set out to break any records with his 1930 flight from england to Australia in a second-hand de Havilland dH60 Gipsy Moth he named Kia ora. “He turned up at Wyndham, and no one really knew he was coming. that was when the press began to call him Sundowner of the Skies,â€? Mary explained. the reviews have been highly favourable, with New Zealand writer, Maurice Gee, saying, “i've just finished Sundowner and found it enjoyable in every way. readers after an aviation story will be more than satisfied, it's a gap filled in, and fits oscar into his proper place as one of the great pioneers; and it's an adventure story as well‌ beautifully told.â€? Sundowner of the Skies will launch at the Maleny rSL at 2pm for a 2.30pm start, on Saturday, June 8, with an optional 1930’s dress theme to celebrate oscar Garden’s incredible flight. the afternoon will feature special guest speakers tracey Heers, Brian day and Mary’s daughter Natalya. Cost is $10 and bookings are available from rosetta Books or trybookings.com/BCAtP.

Keeping it Quiet

P

eter CArNAvAS writes and illustrates books for children and the grown-ups in their lives. He has made many picture books, including Jessica’s Box, Last Tree in the City and The Children Who Loved Books. Peter is also a hinterland local, with a gentle smile and a generous heart. He can often be found in schools, reading his stories, teaching children about illustration, and encouraging a love of writing in the shining faces around him. When he’s not there he enjoys playing music (he is an accomplished musician as well!) or spending time with his wife,

two daughters, Florence the dog and Harry the cat. A Quiet Girl is the latest offering from this award-winning author, a delightful picture book that celebrates the beauty of the world around us. Mary is a quiet girl. Her family makes so much noise they hardly notice her – or anything else. until Mary, in her own gentle way, shows them what they’ve been missing. “in an increasingly noisy world filled with distractions, i wanted to produce a book for younger readers that champions the quieter ones among us

and acknowledges all that we can learn from them. “A book that shows us how much our world can open up if we stop, listen, and take in the magic of nature, says Carnavas. With exquisite illustrations and an empowering message, A Quiet Girl is Peter Carnavas’ tribute to the introvert. Find out more at: petercarnavas.com

ooKiNG ArouNd MY studio you would have to agree that first and foremost i am a colourist. i am inspired by the strong colours that surround me…in my garden, in my home and of course the rich colours of the Australian landscape. “i want paintings to be uplifting and encouraging as well as decorative. Mostly i paint landscapes and still-lifes, in acrylic and pastel.” Wendy Edmond

Wendy Edmond at Woodend

2 Brolgas at Eromanga by Wendy Edmond

Wendy spent 25 years working in health, in cancer treatment after training in radiotherapy in Brisbane and also nuclear medicine, working around the world before settling back in Queensland with her growing family. Wendy’s next career was in State Parliament for 14 years, the last six as Minister for Health. “this was a very busy time in my life and left little room for creativity, although i was always a keen photographer, capturing images both for work and also ones i wanted to paint one day. “While i can’t remember a time when i didn’t want to paint, it has only been since i retired in 2004 that i have had

the opportunity to both study and practice art.” this was aided by a 2007 move to Flaxton where a neighbour introduced Wendy to the Blackall range visual Artists. “We meet as a group each week to paint and exchange ideas and friendship and have several exhibitions each year at St Mary’s Hall in Montville with our commission going to assist with maintenance of this historic hall and precinct.” For those interested, the website blackallrangevisualartists.com.au has information about up-coming exhibitions.

“My paintings are representational and my photos are my inspiration, but my aim as an artist is to capture the emotion and atmosphere of the particular moment and place when i took the photograph.” Being in Arts Connect has enabled Wendy to be part of the open Studio experience for several years and an excellent way of allowing visitors behind the studio door… to see how an artist thinks, works and is inspired, in a wide range of media. “i enjoy meeting fellow artists and interested visitors, and they are welcome at my studio.” Find out more on artsconnectinc.com.au

The change of date (a good decision, based on this year’s Easter weather!) has enabled the committee to present a new focus for the festival, with a full program of cooking demonstrations and live entertainment throughout the day, and a family-friendly section in the vacant allotment next to the park.

Mooloolah’s winter market t

He MooLooLAH vALLeY Community Centre held its first market in 2014 on the grass area behind the Community Centre. over the years the quarterly market has grown and is now showcasing stalls from a variety of talented locals. the markets are held at the beginning of each season, hence the name Four Seasons Markets. the market made a move from the Community Centre to across the road 18 months ago, to the Mooloolah Public Hall on 42 Bray road. this was done to maximise the display opportunities to accommodate both indoor and outdoor stalls. Mooloolah’s winter market is on June 22, 8am - 1pm and they are seeking more stallholders to join their regular list of stalls, especially any sellers of fresh fruit, vegetables and free range eggs. those who are keen will be joining a bunch of friendly stallholders selling upcycled shopping bags, handmade fabric items, preloved children’s toys, paintings, jewellery, plants, homemade conserves and cakes and household bric-a-brac. the volunteers from the Public Hall Committee will be providing light refreshments on the day; proceeds from their sales will go to the upkeep of the hall. if you wish to book a stall site please contact the co-ordinators, Judi or dianne, on 5494 7822 or email info@mooloolahcommunitycentre.org visit the Mooloolah Four Seasons winter market, meet the locals and grab a bargain - it is proving to be a very social event!

Colin Hastie made a huge impact on the people of Maleny, who came to say his memorial at Tesch Park Image Gay Liddington

A shining light by Gay Liddington

A

BroNZe PLAQue screwed to a massive tallowood bench seat outside Maleny iGA may seem insignificant to passers-by. However, the dedication Keep Smiling Beautiful speaks volumes of local, Colin Hastie and the legacy he left his community. the seat, donated in 2010 by Maleny Freemasons, was made in recognition of all quiet achievers. etched into the weathered wood is ‘Happy to meet - Sorry to part - Happy to meet again’. this bench, once a resting place for Colin now invites reflection. Col traversed Maple Street exuding joyfulness most days of the week. it is said that a near-death experience, the result of a brain aneurysm and 200 days in hospital many years ago, changed his outlook on life. Col’s appearance was that of one at ease with himself: t shirt, shorts and cap that had seen better days. A scraggy, smile and an energy that greying beard, his trademark inspired. Col’s signature quotes, Keep smiling beautiful and Keep shining your light gifted with an open heart. His words did not discriminate. Whether local or tourist, shopkeeper or busker, you might well have been the recipient of unrestrained positivity. over time, this earned him the name Magik Col and more recently, Maleny Angel. Shocked by the recent untimely death of the 63-year-old, a groundswell of grief spurred the community into action. the word spread via social media and from friend to friend. two weeks after Col took flight from this life to the next, a community memorial, organised by Colin Peters, Sabine Wienand and Sammy ringer materialised in tesch Park. volunteers cooked a barbeque with donated food, more than enough to cater for the 200 plus in attendance. tributes of artwork, flowers, music and poetry were testament to Col’s bequest. People shared individual stories of how Magik Col touched their lives. they exchanged tears and hugs. the mood was palpable. Colin Peters recalls, “Magik Col lived in Maleny for around 28 years. We had a strong acquaintance going back about

Rob Outridge – Maleny IGA, Arthur Trass – WM, Maleny Masonic Lodge, Colin Peters, Brendan O’Shea – Mindfulness Poet, sit on the IGA bench bearing Colin's plaque, Keep Smiling Beautiful Image Gay Liddington

13 years from upfront Club days. one time at the club there were five Cols sitting around a table and so, after that he’d always say in passing, ‘us Col’s have to stick together!’. He was always happy and smiling from behind that scruffy, scraggy beard. “After the memorial gathering, i created the ‘Keep Smiling Beautiful’ Facebook group. An offer to donate a brass memorial plaque followed. Before long, permission was granted for the plaque to be affixed to the seat outside iGA. Like many in the Maleny community, Mindfulness Poet, Brendan o’Shea expressed his grief creatively. Brendan’s poem Remember to Smile can be found in Poets’ Corner, p23. Colin Hastie brought joy and connection - something we need more of in these times. He will be sorely missed, but lovingly remembered.

He MALeNY viSitor information Centre (MviC) has been offering information to both visitors and locals for the past 25 years! An information outlet was considered necessary for visitors to Maleny by the Maleny Chamber of Commerce in 1994. it was a small hole in the wall in Maple Street then, open on the days volunteers were available for two to four hours a day. “Joan Benson encouraged other locals to volunteer their time to promote the Maleny businesses, all through a hole in the wall of the Maleny Community Centre, shared MviC President, Scilla ecuyer. the Blackall range Business and tourism Association was formed mainly by accommodation businesses in 1995,

with the aim of promoting the Hinterland as a tourist destination and has always been supportive of the Maleny information Centre and assisted in its growth. “over the years the Maleny information Centre has developed into a more sophisticated organisation, smiled Scilla, “with support all the while from the Sunshine Coast Council, Maleny Commerce, Hinterland tourism Sunshine Coast and many of our long-standing Maleny businesses. Maleny local, Bridget Sparks, was instrumental in creating the structure of the organisation with her

background in marketing and public relations, and eventually in 2009 the Maleny visitor information Centre was formalised into an incorporated, not-for-profit organisation with a committee and Bridget as president. “this structure has been maintained entirely by volunteers; three presidents later the Centre currently has four volunteers (in two shifts) on duty 363 days of the year, a demonstration of Maleny’s strong belief in supporting its community, Scilla said with a hint of pride. this independent information centre has developed to keep pace as the tourist numbers increased, but the locals were never forgotten and services have been maintained to meet their needs too. “they may not need a map of the district but they come in to buy tickets to local shows, to collect up-to-date timetables for rail and buses, and to display their posters advertising the many events that Maleny hosts, added Scilla. MviC is celebrating their 25th year as an independent, entirely volunteer-run centre by inviting all MviC volunteers, both past and present and their partners, to come and join in the celebrations at the Maleny Community Centre Hall at 23 Maple Street on June 28. oLiCe Are concerned about females becoming isolated on nights out, and becoming vulnerable to predatory behaviour, which may include drink spiking. Perhaps through intoxication they are separated from friends or removed from licenced premises because of intoxication?

Serious offences may be prevented by some simple welfare checks, and then providing assistance where necessary, such as finding friends, calling parents, arranging transport. Some initiatives which may help is the use of message posters on the back of WC cubicle doors, and above urinals for males displaying message posters including safety of women, predatory behaviour by males targeting intoxicated women, that intoxication does not constitute consent, cognitive ability to provide consent, assisting women if they appear vulnerable, or contacting police.

A happy reader! i just wanted to write and say how much i enjoyed the last issue of Ht. A fantastic front cover, great stories and plenty to read about. it seems to get more interesting by the month! Much of the media out there is about polarising people and scaring them, so it is refreshing to read a paper with a bit of depth, positivity - and style. Remember to Smile

Woodford Storm

My mate Col, a beautiful old soul, is gone. I can hardly believe it. Someone so happy to give has been taken away, and I’m struggling to properly grieve it.

In my little town the universe passes right through

“Remember to smile and stay beautiful, people!” I can hear that big voice say, with those gentle eyes, the philosopher of Maple Street, with his big beard all shaggy and grey. Who’s this bloke who’s always smiling and laughing, and sharing kind words sublime? “All you have to do is be yourself!” he’d declare, “and let your light shine!” If this was India Col would have been a holy man, a Sadhu giving blessings all the time in front of the IGA on a rainy day, he was a rainbow, a piece of sunshine. Ah Col, you deserved a better ending. The one you got was terrible. And then I imagine how you’d reply to that, my crazy Maleny angel. You’d say “Remember to smile and stay beautiful!” and then we’d share a laugh. I can still feel your great big heart, mate, even now, when things seem pretty dark. Where ever you’ve gone, Magik Col, I’m sure they’re glad to have you there. With all your enthusiasm for life and living and the words of love you so gladly share. So when I think of you I won’t dwell on the end of your story, that seems so sad and stupid and evil. I’ll think of your goodness and I’ll hear your wisdom. So remember to smile and stay beautiful, people. © The Mindfulness Poet

Highway rats with headlights bright scurry through the stormy night welded sinews, flexing wires moaning sound of engine fires rolling love on wet road tyres brooding strips of black desire driver, love your mid-night flyer Street light arch your slender back across the coolness of the black Misty moon has closed her eyes cloudy cover hides her sighs conceals her love in thin disguise I feel the velvet of her thighs through the crumbling candy skies The trembling earth lifts up her face to shiver in the storm’s embrace a breath of light, the wet air heaves streetlights watch the lightning freeze a monochrome of screaming trees earth orgasm, dripping leaves moaning now, she’s on her knees In my little town the universe passes right through © John Kerslake

Lake Pedder I landed on a beach once, long ago, A strip of pure white sand, firm beneath the wheels; The tiny plane a visitor, Dwarfed by the splendour and the power of nature. Beyond the beach an upland world; Peat brown tarns, stunted shrubs Engineered in tune with winter storms and clear cold summers. Utter silence. And then a single bird call, no, a cry A clear and haunting sound to mark the silence Heightened the utter beauty of an unspoiled wilderness. A place which I saw only once, and briefly, And yet remains a powerful memory. I cannot revisit, show my children, even less my grandchildren. It has gone, and lives with me alone until I die. © Joan Dillon

To bake or not to bake - that begs the menu. Whether tis slimmer to the body to eat The fats and calories of outrageous cooking Or to take pans against a sea of diets And by opposing, end them. To diet, to fast No more - and by a fast to say we end The indigestion and the noisy flatulence That flesh is heir to. Tis a consumption Devouredly to be wished. To diet, to fast To fast, perchance to famish; ay, there's the rub. For within that time of dearth, what clotted creams may seem To shuffle down our mortal coil Must give us pause - these are the visions That hunger makes of such austerity. For who could bear the image of candied fruit and pecan pie, Chocolate fudge and apple crumble, all but illusion, When he himself is a master chef And might pass to where no spice or sweet is known. Thus the will to create must make eaters of us all And thus the bold attempt to diet Is subverted by the bright flight of aromas And soufflés of great breath and moment Whose sweet fragrance turns our tongues awry And cause our mouths to dribble.

But soft now! The apple pie is golden! Pastry, in thy sensations Be all my senses remembered. © Barry Rosenberg

At home, this is the time of year when i prune back the height and spread of the trees on the northern side of my house, so that they still act as a functional screen and windbreak, but are reduced to a size that allows that glorious, warming northern light to come pouring in through the windows, and spilling onto the decks. Similarly, deciduous trees allow winter sunlight in when planted to the north of the house. Native species include the red and

eLL iF tHiS dAMP weather continues, it looks like we’re in for a cool winter on the Blackall range and nothing quite beats a good wood fire to warm you up (and dry you out). this bring us to yet another great reason for planting trees - you can cut them down... (wait for it... i haven’t quite lost it yet!) and turn them into environmentally sustainable heating fuel! even a 10-year-old tree can provide lots and lots of firewood, and if you’re on a few acres there is no reason why you can’t plan to supply all your own firewood within a decade or so. one great surprise for you all may be that Broad Leaf Privet (Ligustrum lucidum) makes good firewood - it’s one of my favourites, burns hot, clean and splits well. there is a trick to making young wood such as Broad Leaf Privet into good firewood and that is, that the cut wood should be stacked and kept dry to season for 6-12 months. this allows the timber to dry thoroughly to make good clean burning fuel. At Forest Farm we are already harvesting our own firewood from just 10-year-old trees. to ensure sustainability we continue to plant more trees for firewood such as river She oak - Casuarina cunninghamiana, Black Wattle - Acacia melanoxylon, Flooded Gum – Eucalyptus grandis and many

Forest Heart Local Native Plant Nursery 20 Coral St, Maleny Phone: 5435 2193

more trees to provide multiple uses including, cattle fodder, soil improvement, windbreak, soil improvement, firewood and of course habitat for wildlife! one of the great aspects of growing, cutting and seasoning your own firewood is that it reconnects you directly to nature through physical activity. our ability to harvest the resources we need to survive, in a sustainable manner, is a direct connection with nature, a connection that we are generally quite separate from these days. Firewood production can be an integral part of your acreage plan and as electricity costs increase we may see it become an increasingly attractive option. Purely financially growing your own firewood looks good, but then there are all the other benefits such as those listed above in our timber plantings. it’s a win-win, just a little bit of hard work involved, which is also a great way of warming up in the winter months. Harvestable timber lots are also a great way of protecting the edge of remnant forest, as they extend the shade and canopy of the forest edge. Planting, harvesting, preparing and sharing your own timber fuel is a great healthy way of keeping warm, and restoring our native forests and habitat.

Native vs Local

t

Here iS oFteN misunderstanding about the difference between a local native plant and a native plant, as advertised in commercial outlets. that qualifying word ‘local’ is important. Barung specialises in local natives as these are the ones best adapted to the climate and soil conditions of our region. A native plant in the general sense could come from anywhere in Australia, may be totally unsuited to our region and could also become a weed. More of that later. As we all know, Australia is a country with many climatic zones and soil types east to west and north to south. Some species of some plants are extraordinarily adaptable, others either don’t survive or are best treated as annuals. Plants from the sand ridges of the Simpson desert are unlikely to grow in humid, tropical coastal north Queensland. So, what to buy and what not to buy? they all look attractive and apart from the cost of a larger pot, why not ‘give it a go’? Most of our major weeds come from other countries in the

same climatic zone but some natives need watching. Mt Morgan Wattle or Silver Wattle, Acacia podalyriifolia, seeds freely and is invasive in natural bushland. Grown out of its range, it can become a problem so grow a local wattle instead or collect the pods to prevent seed dispersal. Some North Queensland plants are quite serious weeds. umbrella tree, Schefflera actinophylla, is probably the best known and is highly invasive in South east Queensland. Cadaghi, Corymbia torreliana, a mediumto-large tree, is invasive in bushland, the seeds germinate readily, and the sap attracts sooty mould which is difficult to remove from buildings and cars. in this area it is an environmental weed. the big advantage of local native species is that they are generally locally adapted, therefore reducing water demands, fertiliser and other inputs. it’s a good recipe for a garden in a climatically uncertain world. our local natives Are beauties.

owls Poisoned

by Jamie Walker

t

Here iS A riSiNG awareness and concern about the long-term effect of anticoagulant rodent poisons on animals and birds, whose natural purpose in the ecosystem is to control populations of small mammals, particularly rodents. unfortunately, the poisons many people use (readily available from hardware stores, supermarkets and garden centres) are quite slow-acting and, while still alive, the house mice and black rats that eat them are themselves eaten by our owls and frogmouths. this means that the same poisons build up in the birds' systems with an inevitable result. Laboratory tests on the bodies of Boobooks and other owl species have shown that they have died from internal bleeding due to anticoagulant rodenticides. it is believed that once the poison gets into an owl's body, it can take months to clear, even if no more affected mice are eaten. in the meantime, the owl will be sick and unlikely to breed. in europe and America, this hidden effect has been understood for a long time and regulations governing the sale and use of the more powerful rodenticides have been introduced. However, in Australia they can be sold without even a pesticide licence. it was once a common experience to hear Boobook owls calling around Maleny; but my diarised notes tell me that it is more than two years since i last heard one. i know that we must all get fed up with the doom and gloom reports we read and hear about unremitting environmental damage, imminent extinctions, etc. Many of us feel there is little or nothing we can do, so we move on and read something more cheerful. However, the use of poisons around our own homes is an area where we can all make a difference.

Max's

the old fashioned spring or snap traps are much more humane. i know that it gives us the problem of disposing of the contents of sprung traps; but perhaps that is part of our human responsibility. We are now moving into winter; the time of year when exotic species like House Mice and Black rats start to look for cool weather lodgings in our sheds, outbuildings and even our houses. But even when they pick up poison indoors, they will still go outside and that is when their toxic bodies become owls' legitimate prey. research has shown that House Mice eventually become immune to whatever poisons are tried (which is why the chemicals industry constantly develops stronger versions). in the meantime, the populations of those species which nature has evolved to reduce mouse numbers are, out of sight and out of mind, suffering long-term damage without any of us ever intending it.

A balanced approach to treating depression

d

ePreSSioN iS BeCoMiNG more common among the overall population today. increasing levels of stress and the strain of Wendy Rosenfeldt trying to achieve it all can leave little time or motivation for living a balanced life. the physiology needs nourishing food, time for relaxation and enjoyment, regular exercise and a lifestyle in accord with the cycles and rhythms of nature. the mind and body are intimately connected, how well we look after ourselves affects how we feel. Poor diet or skipping meals can cause problems with concentration and fluctuations in energy and motivation; spending all your time inside away from nature can cause mental aggravation and lack of vitality. it is even acknowledged by the medical profession that lack of vitamin d, from the sun, can contribute towards depression. it goes both ways, just as a healthy body is essential for a healthy mind, our thoughts and feelings also affect our physical body. in fact, depression is now considered to be a risk factor for heart disease. When we are unmotivated and depressed we are less likely to exercise or cook a healthy meal and more likely to indulge in unhealthy habits. regular practice of transcendental Meditation has been shown to decrease depression and improve orientation towards positive values. When we are less stressed we feel better and are more motivated to live a healthy life and less inclined to use alcohol or drugs to relieve tension. taking advantage of the cycles of nature can help to provide consistent energy levels and sound sleep. Arising before 6am is vital in preventing the heaviness of depression. When you get up with the rising sun you experience the lively, light energy of vata time. Sleeping into Kapha time, past 6am, creates sluggishness in the mind and body as the channels of the physiology become blocked with impurities. Kapha time at night, between 6pm and 10pm, is the best time to go to bed as the Kapha’s heaviness produces a deeper, restful sleep.

if you stay up past 10pm into Pitta time, you tend to get your second wind and it is harder to unwind and fall asleep. Pitta time at night is for processing and cleansing impurities from the body. if you are awake at this time, this function of metabolism is impeded and you tend to feel groggy and lethargic when you wake up. Getting plenty of rest and feeling refreshed in the morning is essential for emotional well-being. Walking in the early morning also helps to open the channels and stimulate digestion and elimination. exercise helps move blocked emotions and hormones and increases the production of positive neurohormones to elevate your thoughts and mood. Yoga postures are also very good for balancing the emotions, integrating mind and body, and cleansing toxins and impurities from the body. Swimming, cycling and brisk walking are a great way to stimulate and enliven the physiology. A diet of fresh fruit, vegetables and wholegrains provides optimal nutrition without the heaviness of fast food, left overs and packaged food. Natural, unprocessed foods are more easily digested by the body. Pears, walnuts and boiled milk are nourishing for the mind and emotions. if you are feeling depressed it is best to avoid any cold, heavy foods such as yogurt, cheese, cold milk and chocolate, as they will only increase the mental heaviness. Small amounts of spice such as ginger, fenugreek, turmeric, cloves, black pepper, cumin and coriander assist with digestion and clearing impurities, as well as offsetting the sluggishness of excess Kapha. Following some simple dietary and lifestyle recommendations can keep you cheerful all winter.

Some influences like the Schumann resonance, which is the frequency of the earth and which our bodies are entrained to resonate with in order to keep us balanced on all levels of experience have been fluctuating quite considerably of late. the Schumann resonance used to hum along largely at a rate of 7.83Hz, over the last few years it has moved up to 70Hz and back down to 30 Hz, moving around in response to many effects some of which are weather related. this effect creates a tension in the body and mind where our bodies need to try to re-establish a coherent connection to the energy that has kept us functioning harmoniously. these electromagnetic fields do create measurable effects on biological fields. How we might be experiencing this is through feeling tired for no reason, finding it difficult to concentrate at times and noticing that our moods can change

rather quickly for no reason. i’m noting that patients have of late reported feeling more tired than usual, then picking up for no reason, experiencing trouble focusing, in general feeling scattered and also having more aches and pains particularly in the neck, shoulder and back region. Anything that raises our frequency is helpful during these times of adjustment, particularly as we’re not getting the sunshine that we so badly need in order to stay vibrant and healthy. earthing the body, like holding the antenna on a radio to keep the frequency stable, is helpful. earthing the body means going for a barefoot walk on the fresh green grass or along the beach. including more fresh organic juices and foods in our diets. Being aware of the energy that mobile phones and our wireless technology spurt into our fields and minimizing our exposure to this influence by enjoying the technology with care for our wellbeing. Becoming aware also of how our thoughts and feelings manipulate our frequency or energy fields and managing those through constructive self-talk and awareness. And last but most vital is prayer and meditation, properly applied this raises our frequency very quickly.

Maleny Community Men’s House by Judy Fredriksen

A

t tHe 2018 National Men's Health Gathering in Sydney, Michael received a “highly commended award” for “significant contribution made by an individual to improve men’s health and wellbeing”. Michael’s basic philosophy is “showing people how to do life, helping them to understand their purpose and giving them the courage to take responsibility for themselves”. research from Australian Men’s Health Forum says Australia is one of the world’s healthiest societies, yet men of all backgrounds die younger, experience more disease and have less access to support services. the Forum also says that the best way to improve male health is: “to tackle the underlying social factors like boys’ education; our experiences of fatherhood; our working lives; our social connections and our access to malefriendly services.” therein lies the motivation for Michael and his colleague Lance Bergman to continue their work on the nurturing environment of the Men’s House which now takes in women as well. “the Men’s House is a transition zone for many men, and indeed women,” says Lance. “We get people who have been through relationship breakdown, job loss, just moved to the area – found out it’s expensive; people coming out of the rehab centres. “We’re not professional counsellors, but afterwards they need a place to stay connected with their therapist and other people they’ve met here. that’s been quite successful because some people have come out of rehab and really powered on after getting themselves sorted and are going out and doing their thing without the drug and alcohol abuse.”

REHABILITATION & EXERCISE

Lance Bergman and Michael Wearing in the garden of Maleny Community Men’s House by Judy Fredriksen

drugs and alcohol are banned in the Men’s House, while the kitchen is well supplied with fresh veggies grown in the garden. those who stay at the Men’s House often help other people with things like gardening and building. “We go out and do things regularly on a volunteer basis, like gardening and permaculture,” says Lance. By volunteering, Lance and Michael say participants are “creating a network.”

Michael chimes in, “to break a pattern of depression, you get something and do it differently.” the Men’s House is run without any financial assistance from the government. What a wonderful support service for our local men and women! if you would like to make a donation, please contact Michael Wearing on 0416 577 079, or at 6 Fig Street Maleny. email:michaellaughingwolf@icloud.com

shoulder pain:

Early diagnosis and physiotherapy treatment will produce quicker improvements and better outcomes in the majority of clients.

Physiotherapy can help

S

HouLder diSorderS are commonly seen by the physiotherapists at Maleny Physiotherapy. the shoulder complex is a complicated area where there is minimal bony support, enabling a large range of movement to occur through the upper limb. this leads to problems, as the shoulder complex is controlled by soft tissue. the rotator cuff is an important group of muscles for the stability of the shoulder complex. the rotator cuff muscles need to work in good synchronisation, with supportive ligaments for effective shoulder function. A good assessment of the shoulder and surrounding areas is essential for good treatment and clinical outcomes. there are three main subdivisions into which shoulder disorders nearly always fall including impingement/rotator cuff injuries, instability (dislocations) and capsular problems (frozen shoulder).

Physiotherapy Management research shows the majority of shoulder problems will settle with: • resisted exercises • modified rest • ‘hands on therapy’ • taping • postural correction

Don’t suffer in silence. Call Maleny Physiotherapy now on 5494 3911 for an appointment that will bring immediate relief.

Sometimes, your doctor or physiotherapist may suggest having a cortico-steroid injection as these can be very beneficial to reduce pain, inflammation and allow rehabilitation to progress. there are some instances when referral to an orthopaedic surgeon may be required.

Mungo MacCallum

Lightweights t’S AN oLd LiNe, but a good one and unfortunately usually a true one: the front benches of parliament are top heavy with lightweights. of course the leaders deny it: they always lament the surplus of talent within their ranks, their regret that so many outstanding contenders cannot be shoehorned into their already swollen choices. But in fact talent is only one of the criteria Scott Morrison and Anthony Albanese seek, and not always the most important one. the demands placed on them by geography and the factions, not to mention the need to reward favours rendered as they clamber up the greasy totem pole and hang on to the summit are paramount. And there may be a perceived need to raise the profiles of some who are struggling in marginal seats. So perforce mediocrity cannot be avoided, although the leaders prefer to call it balance. in Morrison’s case this is complicated by the coalition agreement; he has managed to reduce the Nationals’ numbers by one, but there are still six cabinet positions which must be filled from Cockies Corner, where the gene pool is pretty sparse. the unexciting Michael McCormack has picked an even more unexciting team, although at least Barnaby Joyce remains in the back paddock. in fact, the same old faces are back in harness – McCormack calls that stability. others might describe it as inertia. And the Liberals are hardly more encouraging – the fact that two of the more competent, Mitch Fifield and Arthur Sinodinos, instantly decamped to greener pastures in the united States made the available options even more sparse. thus Morrison had to do some recycling – Stuart robert and Sussan Ley have been rehabilitated, having served their time in the sin bin. Michaelia Cash, also damaged goods, get another chance and even Melissa Price is retained, although

Morrison’s pledge to keep her as environment Minister was considered too absurd to contemplate. in any case the environment has now been effectively trashed, with emissions reduction – by which Morrison means, but will not say, climate change – has been consigned to the coal-stained hands of energy Minister Angus taylor. other non-performers have also hung on – david Coleman, dan tehan and Linda reynolds are just three who hardly deserve preserving, still less promotion. others deserve points for trying: Karen Andrews, who retains the science portfolio, has said she plans to bring scientists to Canberra so they can show the sceptics and denialists beyond any doubt that man-made climate change is real. Andrews also wants to go to Mars, a somewhat more realistic ambition. But most seem content to just bumble along on their inflated salaries. And of course the massed choirs of assistant ministers are a veritable grab-bag of nonentities. But at least Morrison had the excuse that much of the mix was inevitable – he had to select lightweights because they were the only class available. Albanese was in a tougher position – he knew he had good people but was unable to use some of the best and brightest because the factional law lords would not let him. So Pat dodson is not a starter – the father of reconciliation has been sidelined in reconciliation Week. Andrew Leigh, once considered a possible future leader, has been dumped altogether because he remained steadfastly non-aligned. ed Husic had to stand aside because there were only six places allocated to the NSW right and Albanese insisted that Kristina Keneally must fill one of them. She is a worthy inclusion, but why not keep both? Sorry, cannot be done. But at least Keneally’s rise meant that the superfluous don Farrell could finally be shunted out of the deputy leadership of the senate. He will still clutter up the front bench, purely because of his notoriety as a war lord – his

ability to frighten his colleagues. His opponents rightly ignore him – few could even name his portfolio responsibility (give up? Special Minister of State and Sport). But Albanese was less worried about his indolence than his gender: he wanted two women on the leadership team and with tanya Plibersek not available in the reps. the senate was the only opportunity. the prize of deputy in the house was delivered by the factions in the form of richard Marles, formerly best known as a performer in a comedy crosstalk duo with Christopher Pyne. His new job will be rather more challenging. the vital task of a deputy is to be a link between the leadership and the backbench – not as an enforcer, which is the whips’ role, but as a canary in the mineshaft. the deputy must sniff out and snuff out trouble before it becomes serious, and as such must be constantly on guard, but also trusted. Whether Marles is the right man may well determine whether the unity the caucus has maintained for nearly six years can hold after the demoralising loss of a second election. Which brings us, inevitably, to the problem of Bill Shorten. on merit he obviously deserves to be on the front bench, but then so did Kevin rudd and Malcolm turnbull, and look where that led. However, rejecting him would not be a smart move either – just ask tony Abbott. Shorten has denied a report that he hoped for a comeback, but the reality is that his refusal to leave parliament altogether will be a magnet for media trolls looking for any sign of disloyalty, and given the febrile nature of such people, they will either discover or fabricate one. Albanese will need to be on guard. the magisterial examiners of the Murdoch press have already demanded he pass more “tests” than NAPLAN – he must, according to them, embrace most of Morrison’s agenda, including more privileges for the religious, passing all of Morrison’s pie-in-the-sky tax cuts for the wealthy, and embracing coal and gas – and, for good measure, nuclear power. Albanese has vowed not to rush things, but that won’t stop the media from harassing him. He can only hope that the heavyweights in his entourage band together to protect him. He has a better team than Morrison, but so did Bill Shorten. His opponents are not all in parliament. The views expressed in Mungo's column are his and not necessarily the views of the HT team.
