t’S ALreAdY JuLY! is it just me, or do you feel this year is galloping by at an alarmingly fast rate? i always used to hear ‘grown ups’ say that time flies as you get older, and i would take it with a pinch of salt - being young, the days seemed never-ending (especially when exams were involved). But now, i understand it’s true, and so the cycle continues with me saying the same thing to my kids! there is so much in this issue that i have loved putting together, but interviewing Joe Beaupellet was a highlight. What a life, and obviously impossible to fit all of his stories into one feature, but it was a joy to travel through time with him. in keeping with the time theme, this is perhaps time to challenge ourselves with the worldwide movement, Plastic Free July! it may take advance planning before a shopping trip, but even if we manage 80% less plastic in our purchases, that’s a positive step. (Let’s keep pushing for more biodegradable packaging out there!) our article by Punit Kumarrin gives useful tips on how to move to sustainability. Going back in time is a feature this month, with an interesting history of Montville cricket, with photos of the

You can also take some time out, while you savour a hot cup of something and enjoy the poetry by hinterland locals, the gentle wisdom of Leunig and preview what entertainment is coming up in Creative Cuts. i would also like to add how much i appreciate the time people have taken to write kind emails and letters to us; send their very personal work; offer their opinions, and thank us for the job we do in striving to make this a consistently interesting, useful and visually appealing publication. Your words mean a lot to us. Now it’s time for me to sign off and put away (three!) basket-loads of clean washing – unless anyone has the time to come and do it for me…no? on that note, i will leave you with a timely quote that made me chuckle: Sometimes you might feel like no one’s there for you, but you know who’s always there for you? Laundry. Laundry will always be there for you.

Joe’s journey From war, to a cyclone, to toppling in a tank – it’s all part of a rich life story for Maleny local, Joe Beaupellet.

by Victoria McGuin

J

oe BeAuPeLLet iS A GeNtLeMAN. the welcoming smile, coffee and biscuits upon my arrival gave me this clear impression. He is also a Frenchman with such a strong accent you would think he has just arrived in Australia, rather than lived here for 50 years! Joe’s childhood is a humbling story, and his tenacity and good humour over the years in France and Australia is an inspiration. “i was born in February 1925 and lived in Brittany,” Joe told me. “When World War ii started, we had to go to Lyon – it was the capital of the French resistance. “Food was scarce, i only weighed 45 kilos when i was 14 years old. i ate my first orange when i was 12, it was my Christmas present. “i was the eldest of seven children, and if you didn’t wake up first the others would pinch your food!” Joe gave a wry smile. “our parents would put things in our shoes, and we were happy with small things. Just a potato on your plate would make you happy, as they were hard to find.” in 1945, the Germans began to leave. “the government were giving guns to the French people to fight the soldiers, but the trouble was they weren’t trained French soldiers, so they would aim at the German soldiers and get shot themselves. it was terrible.” Joe was a secretary in the Navy and, although he did some outside exercises, much of his time was spent working in the office. “i was in the Navy wanting to visit the world, but i spent 28 months in Algeria, during the France/Algeria war, so i didn’t travel anywhere else.”

Joe did, however, meet his wife, danielle, there. “My wife is from Algeria and she didn’t like the cold weather back in Lyon, where i was living. She was ready to start a new life somewhere warm. “it was good timing, as there was a strike, a revolution in France in 1968 and i was pretty involved with the union, i wasn’t very popular.” Joe’s eyes twinkled, “i was a ‘troublemaker’.” Joe, danielle and their three daughters made the move and arrived in Adelaide on a ship called the Galileo in 1969. “i worked in Adelaide for a week on a car factory production line. there were three of us French men there, and i was told there were plenty of jobs in darwin.” determined to carve a path in Australia, Joe moved up to darwin first, with the family to join him once he had established work and a place to live. “i worked as a welder, making stairways, balconies, anything with steel and metal. i was being paid for eight hours a day but working for 12,” Joe shook his head. “Luckily, i met another Frenchman who told me there was a good job

in the government for my skills. i applied and stayed there for 18 years!” Joe began by working for an Aboriginal settlement. “i would have to fix everything they broke, like locks in jail, with screwdrivers jammed in. i had to take the locks to darwin to be fixed and bring them back again. “the first day i went to work to the settlement, 20 Aboriginal people came for work, the next day none. Money was not important to the men; they would share and trade without it and found it difficult to adapt. “Some thefts happened where i was advised to call the police or press charges, but i wouldn’t because i knew how to work things out and get back what was stolen. “i am the only one from the settlement who received a Christmas card from the Aboriginal people,” Joe said with a touch of pride. this was not the only challenging experience for Joe in darwin. “My family had a house in a new housing commission, and it was Christmas eve 1974. We were told a cyclone was coming, but nothing could have prepared us. We had a party in the workshop, and it was quite windy, then we went to bed. “danielle woke me up, ‘Joe, Joe, look!’ and i said, ‘i’m going to sleep’, she replied, ‘No you’re not!’” it was a night they would never forget. “the power cut, the walls cracked. We were all in a corridor, the family dog was shaking. the roof came off, and the sheets ended in a tree. everyone was shaking and cold. “i decided to crawl down the corridor to the lounge to get some alcohol to keep everyone all warm, and a tree crashed just past me. it was a shock. the wind was 240km per hour.” Continued next page

WHAT ARE YOUR REFUND RIGHTS? Every now and then you might want to return a particular purchase to the store for a refund or exchange but you might be confused about your legal rights. Your confusion is undoubtedly increased when you see stores displaying signage stating that the store will not give a refund for certain items. Items where I have sometimes seen ‘no refund’ signs are on products such as sale items, swimwear, sunglasses, or opened products. These signs are misleading. Although retailers do not have to exchange or refund perfect goods, they cannot contract out of their obligation to provide you with a refund if the goods or services that you purchased: • Have a fault that you could not have known about at the time of purchase; • Are not the same as the description provided by the salesperson or advertisement; • Do not match the sample you were shown at the time of purchase; and/or • Do not do the job as you were led to believe. You are not entitled to a refund if you:

the family were very lucky to survive, 71 people died and 70 percent of darwin’s buildings were destroyed. “i never found the roof to my garage, it came off in one piece. And cars ended up in the swimming pool at the hotel. “All the families were evacuated, mine went to Perth, and i stayed in darwin and transferred to a welding shop to help with the repairs. “Luckily, i had insured our house 28 days before the cyclone! Whitlam was a good bloke, he paid everything that needed to be paid.” Joe’s good luck came once again a few years later when he was working on a large “jellyfish” water tank and fell to the bottom while climbing out. He laughed at this, “the papers made it into a big story and said i fell 15 metres, the tank seemed to get bigger every time! But after that, there were always grilles put in place on tanks, which was good.” darwin was full of enjoiyable times for Joe and danielle. “We opened a cleaning business for 11 years, and we could take time off to go on bush walks and go fishing. “there was a French hour on the radio at the time, and we ended up taking that over for a couple of years together, playing French music, doing the news in French, it was good fun,” Joe grinned. When Joe reached 65, he wanted to retire. “i love darwin, but it’s too hot, and now it’s too crowded for me. When we first moved there in ‘69 it was like a cowboy movie; people would ride into town on their horse, tie it up and go to the pub! “So, we bought a caravan, as we wanted to visit the Kimberly. My dear wife hated the caravan,” Joe reminisced with a chuckle. “on our travels we ended up in a caravan park near Landsborough, and i showed her this house in Maleny. that was it.”

two of Joe and danielle’s daughters still live in darwin, the third in Caloundra, but sadly, danielle has had to move into the nearby erowal Aged Care Facility for the last seven years, with dementia. “We had ten good years here,” Joe shared. “i go and see her every day, take her food, sit with her. She doesn’t recognise me much now, but every now and then i see her remember, and she asks me for a kiss.”

eoPLe, tHe PLANet, food production and loose leaf tea were the starting motivations for the Montville Makers and Growers Market that is celebrating its 10th birthday this July.

A small group of parents from Montville State School came together with the Montville Village Association ten years ago to start a monthly market in the heritage-listed community hall. in a very organic way, the volunteer base expanded from an initial 10 or so to the current 30 or 40 people who come together every market!

“Additionally, there is honey from local bees, high-quality seafood, organic sourdough from local bakers, various compotes and preserves, olives stuffed with a myriad of ingredients and much more,” smiled Judith.

When Judith Sinnamon, the original market coordinator, first opened the cupboards in the CWA annexe of the hall, she was delighted to find a huge stash of 1950s Johnson crockery and anodised aluminium teapots.

“it is important to enhance local connections and support and sustain local food production, especially with the effects of climate change,” Judith said. “We believe it’s important to support local producers as both a buffer for food insecurity and to reduce the food miles from farm to plate.

“An enthusiast for loose leaf tea, myself and the market group put together Alexandria cuddles up to a chicken the breakfast menu of tea at Montville Market and pancakes, the perfect combination for “As we saw when tropical community breakfasts at cyclone Yasi wiped out banana production in North Qld in the long tables in the sunny eastern side of the hall,” Judith 2011, Lindsay and Judy continued to sell their Hunchy shared. bananas at regular uninflated prices.” “there were great reasons for starting the market. it was good for economic sustainability for stallholders and a place where people, young and old, could interact, or just sit under the magnificent Memorial figs to enjoy the strumming of light jazz guitar or steel-stringed bluegrass.

Fostering creativity from local artisans is another purpose for the market. With hand- fashioned objects in wool, wood, silver, fabric and paper, a vigilant eye has been cast to protect authentic producers from cheap, mass-produced competition.

“Supporting our local producers was another central ambition,” Judith continued, “and encouraging locals to

Bringing ballroom to the hills Dancing with the stars is a reality for Wendy and Christopher Ward, with that sparkling canopy above their Maleny home each night! Their passion for dance and music is also their favourite way of sharing creativity with the community.

by Jacqui Hensel

F

or CHriStoPHer ANd WeNdY Ward, the hills really are alive with the sound of music as they bring their talents to the hinterland. this all-singing, alldancing duo are finding their groove and ways to give back to the community that has welcomed them so warmly. Knowing that they wanted more of a country lifestyle once they had finished their professional careers in Brisbane, Christopher Ward and Wendy MerefieldWard looked to the hinterland to find their paradise. in 2003 the journey began by building a cabin for themselves. Christopher and Wendy loved escaping from the city and getting to know Maleny. “We were enjoying more and more weekends at the cabin, and we finally left Brisbane for good in 2009. then we spent a few years establishing our new home and garden,” said Wendy.

they then began looking for ways to be more involved and active participants in the community. it wasn’t long before they found the Maleny Singers. With their long history in the Brisbane-based ignatians Musical Society, Christopher and Wendy were keen to revive their involvement in musical theatre. they now appear regularly with the Maleny Singers, including in last year’s production of Iolanthe and this year’s production of the classic Gilbert and Sullivan operetta, The Gondoliers. However, when they are not working on the property or rehearsing, Christopher and Wendy are bringing the joy of dance to others. they have extended their musical interests to teaching beginner ballroom dancing every thursday night in the Presbyterian Church Hall, showing their students the basics of the Modern Waltz, Jive, Cha Cha Cha and the Quickstep. “We began teaching ballroom very informally at the old Bdifferent studio. to start with it was just teaching a few friends. it was more of a social outing,” Wendy mused. “it's also a nice thing to do together as a couple. Although some wives might be dragging their husbands along at the beginning, they usually end up enjoying it,” chuckled Wendy. “dancing is one of the best things for our bodies and our brains. “i was a teacher-librarian before i retired,” continued Wendy, “but it is lovely to be teaching something i really enjoy. it’s very different from classroom teaching.” “it’s a pleasure to pass on the skill of dancing,” Christopher said. “We like to see people’s confidence grow each week. Students in our class are progressing really well.” Christopher was initially drawn to dancing through his on-stage performances in musical theatre - even learning

to tap dance for a show. He introduced Wendy to ballroom dancing after they met. “i started at orchards dance Studio in the (Fortitude) Valley in the 1980s and really enjoyed learning new dances and variations as well as the social side, of course. it was so much fun and, happily, Wendy thought so too! “We just loved it and as we improved and became more experienced, we were asked to go on staff to help instruct new students,” Christopher explained. “From there we progressed to ballroom competition, but it was very nerve-wracking. there would be six judges all around the floor watching everything, from your hand gestures to your foot placement,” said Christopher. “of course, we watched all the Ginger rogers, Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire movies and loved the dancing in those films,” said Wendy with a smile. “Neither of us did dance as children and even though we were heavily involved in musical theatre in Brisbane, we always looked forward to going dancing.” Ballroom dance began as an elite, invitation-only, social event in the 17th Century as portrayed in the novels of Austen and tolstoy. originally it was named after the enormous halls in which it was held. it was restricted to the upper classes as balls were expensive to host. the Waltz was originally frowned upon as indecent and not fit for polite society when it was first introduced around the 1850s. it was made popular by Queen Victoria who was a keen ballroom dancer and especially loved the Waltz. the Waltz continues its popularity today and has two main forms, the Modern Waltz with a ¾ time and the Viennese (Quick) Waltz. Ballroom dancing became a collection of partnered dances that grew from Waltzes to include the Fox trot and Quick Step and now also incorporates the Latin suite of Cha Cha Cha, rumba and Jive. With the popularity of the dancing shows recently on our tV screens, it is no wonder that ballroom dancing is having a revival. Maintaining the all-important practice each week can be tricky, however social dances are held weekly or monthly down on the coast at Woombye, Maroochydore, Kawana and Buderim. Anyone interested in beginner ballroom classes can contact the dance Academy at info@thedanceacademy.com.au “everyone is welcome!” smiled Wendy, “From beginners to those with previous dancing experience - anyone can come and dance with us.”

Wo reMArKABLe PHotoS from the early 1900s came to light from a Smith Family Collection. one is of early settlers with seven of the men named, the other is of an indigenous team in their whites. Both photos are taken on the Village Green. they suggest that cricket at Montville was a rare opportunity for an even playing field for these young men.

The Chronicle and North Coast Advertiser gives us a glimpse into the early days of cricket in Montville. it would appear to be mainly social cricket with, at times, a very local bent. it reported that, on the King’s Birthday Holiday in 1903, the ‘young fellows’ challenged the ‘married men’ to a game on the ‘Village Green’, with the young fellows winning by 65 runs and 3 wickets. A later story from 1911 reports on a Ladies versus the Gents game, suggested by Lil Bowser, where the Ladies won convincingly. the game was played with the addition of several local rules. the ‘Gents’ had to bat with one hand – the left, had to bowl underarm and had to field with one hand. the highlight of the day was a mighty six hit by Miss r. dart. of course, there was a more serious Montville Cricket team because there was an announcement of the local

(Montville) cricket team holding a prize night that was to include a concert and dance in the School of Arts Hall in 1906. Practice cricket and any other Sports days were held on the Village Green opposite the Hall until the Montville Sports and recreation Grounds was established in 1925. the land was purchased for £500 from J.J. thomas. A further £500 was spent on building two tennis courts, and a football field/cricket oval. ten locals guaranteed the loan and five trustees were appointed to manage the grounds. Admission was set at 2 shillings (20 cents). up until 1925, the Montville reserve Cricket team claimed Palmwoods as its home ground. The Chronicle and North Coast Advertiser records a decisive victory Montville had over Nambour at Palmwoods in 1922. Nambour was all out for 40 in its first innings. the regular games of cricket were later interrupted by WWii, but after the war, a new and very competitive team emerged. The Montville Team L - R Standing: Laurie Stupart, Jim Ruddy, Ralph Dart, ? Monte Dart, ?,? Sitting: Dave Unwin, Billy Jones, ? , Len Owen

Ken Johnston; Barry Shea; ivan Hansen; Ken Lunn; Godfrey McCulloch took the team through the post-war 1940s and 1950s. in 1956, on Saturday, November 23, Les Harper and Les Farmer opened for Montville against Palmwoods, both making centuries. then on Sunday 24, Les Harper christened his daughter, Sue; and Les Farmer christened his son, david. that weekend has certainly gone down as memorable and a time for celebrating in both families! terry Glover, son of Artie, was not a cricketer but grew up next to the sports ground and was a confessed supporter and hanger-on. He recalls joining a group of youngsters every Saturday morning before a game to pick up the cowpats. (dairy farmer, West-Newman, whose farm bordered the sports ground on its southern side, ran his herd over the oval to keep the grass down.) Montville were Premiers in 1962, and by now, Mapleton sport had declined and the success of the Montville team was attracting players from Flaxton and Mapleton as well. one was a teenage quick, rob Nichols, whose best figures included 10 for 66 against eudlo and 9 for 13 against Maroochydore. By the late ‘60s to early ‘70s, Montville Cricket boasted two teams. david Farmer kept up the successful record of quicks with best figures of 9 for 15 against Nambour while 10 year- old richard Barnett picked up 5 for 4 in his first game with the team.

The Indigenous Team early 1900s

Although there was some lantana, raspberry cane and privet growing on the roadside of the oval, any ball hit on to the road rolled rapidly down the road and over the edge and off the range towards Chenrezig. in 1975, twins, daniel and thomas roth, joined the team. their parents had Flaxton Barn and built a practice cricket net behind the barn where many of the team trained. the boys shared a VW Beetle and drove younger players with them to games. during a home game, thomas hit a ball down to fine leg and the fielder signalled 4. thomas and richard stopped running and stood talking in the middle of the wicket. the fielder threw the ball to the keeper who ripped off the bails and appealed. it turned out the ball had not reached the boundary and thomas was eventually given out. incensed by such a blatant act of cheating, twin daniel jumped into the VW and took after the offending fieldsman, chasing him around and off the field! Cricket was played at Montville for over 70 years from the 1900s to the 1970s. When the oval was converted into a soccer field, the old concrete wicket was dug up – no longer used and in the way of the refurbished ground. the tin shed may be gone and the stories are fading but the game of cricket remains an important legacy for a village with no pub. it helped build the community we live in today. Delving into the dairy Viewers all over the world last month saw the gloss and glamour of the Channel Ten MasterChef television show visiting The Old Dairy in Maleny. The media coverage has reached far and wide on that event, but in HT style we decided to delve a little deeper, talking to the Jelekainen family about how and why they began the project to transform the property to its current splendour.

He oLd dAirY MALeNY is a 90-acre property on the Landsborough-Maleny road featuring pockets of rainforest, hidden waterfalls and rolling green hills. it is also the centre of the Jelekainen’s very own love story. Ari and Jo Jelekainen and their children, Luka, Markus and Matilda have put their hearts and souls into their home, to raise it to a showcase property welcoming weddings, events and now‌television crews! Jo and Ari had their first date at Mount Beerwah and keeping with the romantic tradition, Ari proposed to Jo in the exact same spot. “When we found the old dairy in 2003, the views of Mount Beerwah, the natural environment and the valley we could drew us in to create a property exactly where always overlook our favourite Jo. place, â€? reminisced “it was still operating as a functioning dairy with

paddocks full of cows, weather-worn barns and tired old fences. it was a long way from what it is today. Beginning their journey, they camped on the property and made changes each day, slowly building the property up over 16 years through all seasons. “We weeded, mowed, planted and harvested while raising our own family and the juggle that all entails. We watched the sun rise over the ridge while the kids played in the rainforest and we all collected stones from the paddocks to use in the re-builds. “As we raised our family, we enjoyed our own special occasions with family and friends who visited our property and we built with the motto in mind of what would we like to do, see and feel here. Jo’s father-in-law carefully renovated the ramshackle bar and the bell tower building for her sister’s wedding in 2013. He recycled stone from their own paddocks and recycled the timber beams on the property into the newly styled features. “our children got to name the new bar to put their own

stamp on it. We had just two children back then so Luka and Markus chose their favourite animals and that is how the Fox and turkey bar was born,” laughed Jo. “it was after that wedding event hosted on our property that we properly understood the pure joy and inspiration this special place could provide for other people’s love stories.” Jo and Ari then began renovating the existing buildings and custom-building new structures to create a magical and unique property, specifically for weddings and events. the final results included capacity for up to 90 guests, individual ceremony areas with fountains, a fully functioning caterers kitchen, on-site cottage accommodation and an area dedicated for guest parking. “every aspect of this old farm has been developed with love and superior craftsmanship, and often a bit of fun too,” smiled Jo. “the property is booked exclusively for our guests for entire weekends, which gives them the opportunity to spend time together without distractions. “We created it like that because that is what we love

about being here, time together to do what we want to do, enjoying this property and absorbing the beautiful views.” this made it an excellent choice for Masterchef to use in an episode of filming for the cooking series. “the Masterchef team approached us via Queensland tourism to check our capacity, road access and calendar availability. the filming took place on February 23 and was published to air in June, so there was a while to keep it quiet,” shared Jo. the Maleny site was chosen as one of many Queensland venues for the MasterChef ‘Queensland Week’ episodes. “We already refer all of our guests to local suppliers when they are arranging events for musicians, security services, shopping and restaurants so it was good to contribute even more to the success of the region and the local and regional communities. “our children sat mesmerised by the filming and production crew of over 100 people and enjoyed chatting with the shows judges, Matt Preston, George Calombaris and Gary Mehigan.” Contestants started by creating a sweet or savoury dish with local ginger. the winner of that round then competed against a professional chef using one of five beautiful Queensland ingredients as the hero of their dish.

the contestants were tucked away in a private cottage and the judges had exclusive use of the two-storey on-site rockinghorse Cottage as their private green room. “When building that cottage, we added a little room at the bottom of the stairs, the secret man cave,” revealed Jo. Hidden away behind a locked door in the cottage is an intimate private cellar and bar where guests have been known to calm their wedding nerves and share private conversations. Jo and Ari have seen many events held at the venue and still stand in awe of the stunning sunsets that grace their property. “We get the birds flying overhead and the beautiful views of the valley, we feel so lucky to be here.” the love story continues for the Jelekainen's as they watch their children grow and play amongst the rolling hills, while still overlooking their special Mount Beerwah in the distance. “We love that people feel comfortable here and we look forward to many years together seeing this special place provide for other people’s love stories.”

N JuSt tWo years the local astronomers have established a presence at Maleny Golf Club. the combination of dark clear skies and the Golf Club’s facilities has made it the number one site for astronomers to gather from both the Sunshine Coast and Brisbane. Convenor and Secretary of the Brisbane Astronomical Society, dr Ken Wishaw said, “on good nights it is common to have up to 20 large telescopes here enjoying the beautiful skies that Maleny has to offer.” each month (weather permitting) the astronomers hold a public viewing night, and they love sharing their knowledge and their telescopes with the public. “We have developed our talks to cater for all comers regardless of age or previous knowledge,” Ken said. “Many people return each month, some as new members of the Brisbane Astronomical Society.”

their biggest public night to date was for the Guinness Book of records national attempt for the most people stargazing at one time. “We had 201 attendees become world record holders,” Ken shared. “We also help people choose what telescope is right for them,” Ken continued. “Winter heralds the dry season and is also the time of the year when the core of our Milky Way Galaxy is overhead, so there are always plenty of objects to see. “Additionally, Jupiter and Saturn will be well placed to see over winter and spring.” the telescopes at Maleny are the biggest public-accessible telescopes in Queensland. the four computer-controlled telescopes, each with a main mirror 33cm in diameter, capture over 3,000 times more light than the naked eye, giving spectacular views of the moon, planets and star clusters.

the next public night will be on Saturday July 6, weather permitting, of course. it will consist of a short formal lecture followed by a laserguided naked eye sky tour and telescope viewing. “No experience or equipment is required, just curiosity and very warm clothing!” smiled Ken. the Moon and Jupiter will be observable from sunset and Saturn will be observable after 7.30pm. While this is a free event, donations of $5 for an individual or $10 for a family help cover costs. Further details and weather updates are at the Facebook site ‘Sunshine Coast dark Sky Astronomers’, or the Brisbane Astronomical Society website: bas.asn.au

Sustainable Punit Kumarrin from The Source Bulk Foods in Maleny is passionate about plastic - using less of it! Here he shares news about the global movement, Plastic Free July, and how we can all help.

P

LAStiC Free JuLY ... Have you heard of the program by the foundation of the same name to help Australians reduce plastic waste? “Plastic Free July started off in 2011 in Western Australia and is now one of the most influential environmental campaigns in the world,” shared Punit. it is estimated that Australians use around 10 million pieces of plastic every day, with the majority of it ending up in landfill. of this is household waste (which is avoidable), soft and other recyclable plastics. “these plastics take hundreds of years to break down in landfill and if it ends up in our waterways and ocean it can endanger the ecosystem,” Punit explained. So how can we reduce our dependence on plastic packaging? “Marine scientists have observed that 9 out of 10 plastic objects floating around in our waterways and ocean are soft plastic food packaging,” stated Punit. “therefore it is logical for us to reduce our dependence on plastic packaging where possible and recycle the ones that we have to use as a must.” You can help by using reusable coffee cups, refuse to use plastic straws, using your own cloth bags at the grocery store or take your own containers into a bulk foods store near you to do your shopping. “the Source Bulk Foods here in Maleny is set up to allow people to shop 100 percent packaging free,” said Punit. “You can take in your own containers, jars, tubs, tupperware or cloth bags to do your shopping. We carry over 400 lines of product to cover almost all of your pantry needs. the staff are well trained and knowledgeable and can help you transition to lower waste shopping easily.” they also have glass jars and bottles and stainless steel containers, so you can beautifully customise and package your essentials, then simply bring back the empties for a refill! “My hope is that this July we can all make positive steps to transition to a lower plastic consumption lifestyle,” smiled Punit. “We really need to for the planet.” For more information about this important global foundation, visit: plasticfreejuly.org for tips and advice you can even share your stories of the plastic-free challenge online.

artist profile Arts Connect Inc. (ACI) is a membership driven organisation, based in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. They also run two annual ACI events ‘Sculpture on the Edge’ and ‘Open Studios’, the latter where artists’ studios are open on weekends for visitors to enjoy.

Members are drawn from many areas and have a diverse range of skills and experience across many art forms. New members are always welcome - visit artsconnectinc.com.au Currently, each month, HT shares a profile from an ACI member, and July’s artist is Judi Parkinson.

Judi Parkinson “i

doN’t KNoW tHAt i ever ‘became’ an artist,” shared Judi. “the determination to create and represent my experiences on paper is evident in my earliest memories. An age when i discovered that creating is exciting, and tired very quickly of colouring books. “interactions with nature and everyday experiences remain the focus of my art practice and i employ a variety of media to express them.” Storytelling is an integral part of Judi’s work, “even in a landscape i must portray a story and often the play of light or mist is my focus. “My choice of media and elements of design emphasise the narrative, for example, the delicate veins of a decaying leaf or petal can be accentuated in a cyanotype. Whereas, when i have a brush loaded with colourful oil paint i revel in thick painterly brush marks.” the hills, mists and rainforests of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland are a constant yet ever-changing source for inspiration for Judi. “Whether it’s the endless views of our countryside or the beauty of a feather, a bird, a leaf, a tree, the aesthetics of nature are my reason for investigation. i prefer to work en plein air but it’s not always possible and my photos and sketches become resources for studio work.” With a background in social work and the health industry, Judi felt it was natural to combine these practices with her art. “Since 2005 i have been creating non-verbal movies and books for seniors in care. For these media, i use a photojournalism approach in videography and photography to provide a ‘reality’ to the narrative.

“Last month i celebrated the release of my seventh reminiscent movie. Although a very different media and audience, my familiar subjects of nature and home continue.” Since the early ‘80s Judi has been commissioned by governments, businesses and organisations for a variety of artwork subjects, usually in freehand pen and ink sketches or watercolours. “these commissions are always a delightful challenge to meet both the client’s criteria and test my drawing skills,” Judi said. “Across my varied art practice is a visual diary of my personal experiences, yet they are common, recognisable experiences to everyone.”

Letters Wildlife and Wales

i read the very interesting story by Jamie Walker about our wildlife (Ht June 2019), an eye-opener of an article about the public killing our wildlife without knowing what we are doing. i thought it was a brilliant article and we the public need to read more stories like this one. i am not a user of pesticides or any other product that would affect cats, dogs and our beautiful wildlife. A friend of mine living in Maleny has been watching a pair of Frogmouth owls in her garden and watching them most days and talking to them. they set up home in her wildlife garden her watching and talking to them every day even to producing young chicks, taking a lot of photos while watching them. You and your crew are doing a great job. i send a copy of the Hinterland Times to my sister in Wales, uK, and she passes it around to folk who have relatives there and then it ends up in the doctor’s surgery! thanks, and keep writing good articles.

the Mapleton Choir held two events recently at Kureelpa Hall. Musical director Ailsa Morehen and accompanist,

John taylor, put on an eclectic collection of classic and post-modern music. Compere Michael Henning entertained the audience with intriguing anecdotes from extensive research about the pieces included in the programme, and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves a great deal! Just to let readers know, the next performance of the Mapleton Choir will be on october 25 and 27, when they will be performing songs of earth, Sea and Sky. if you would like to become involved with the choir, please call Ailsa Morehen on 5478 6079.

We are continuing to raise funds for the new clubhouse and plans are underway for a special fundraising event at the Montville Village Hall involving great music and entertainment, an indigenous art auction, drinks and nibbles. We have just been to our daughters wedding in Spain. it’s quite lovely that our daughter, Amy Vetier, had her friend eleanor Simpson of Western Ave at the wedding. the girls have been friends since grade one of Montville State School in 1995, and despite living on opposite sides of the world, came together for Amy’s wedding in the small town of rubì near Barcelona in Catalonia. eleanor being the maid of honour delivered a heartfelt speech to speech to her friend. Amy is now a Chemical engineer working in London and eleanor a Pharmacist in Brisbane. it was lovely to see them together again, a long way from home. Kind Regards, Alice Vetier

Waiting for You

Clouds for Company

At the white door Past the gravel driveway They sit Proud and furry The welcoming party Tails thumping gladly Ears alert and hearing Your footsteps Back home. The loveable dogs with Open hearts calling Waiting for you.

Today, like every day, I have the clouds for company. Trees are there too, but like their human cousins they are busy doing things preening leaves, stretching branches. The clouds, too, are human like here today and gone tomorrow. But now, like me, they float and contemplate. Theirs is a silent world broken only sparingly by thunder and a ruthless wind.

The door opens Barking, jumping, tails flickering, In spinning wonders Happy eyes, You are home. They sit Proud and grateful For their owner to embrace With open arms The hugs they have missed.

Poetry is an arrangement of language, artistic word pictures that attempt to inspire imagination, evoke emotion and provoke humour. Poets are illustrators of words that create beauty and intensity, and the HT is proud to give them a platform.

They were excited as they gave me the card, “Choosing presents for you Mum, is always hard. But Dad says you’ll love this. It’s really great!” Now I was getting excited, I couldn’t wait. But I teased us a little by feeling the outside And wondering out loud what could be inside.

Green groves blanketed these hills, patches of orange, amber, gold. Though the citrus has gone the zest remains.

“Money to buy something, just for me? Tickets to that show I’ve been dying to see? A voucher for gliding lessons I wanted to do?” “Better than that Darl, and it’s all for you.” So I opened it quickly, loving smile for him. Oh… Just what I wanted, 12 months at the gym.

Bite into it, peel it, capture the sunshine. The longer fruit stayed on the tree the sweeter it became.

So here I sit, struggling on the stupid Pec Deck Trying to ignore shooting pains in my neck. I move to the leg press, squatting down low, As usual, unsure where my feet are to go. Next is the shoulder press, most hated of all. With clenched jaw I curse, “Oh yeah, having a ball.” No matter how often I force myself to go, My aging flesh will never, ever look (I know) Like that of those earnest lycra-clad beauties Or of those other assorted posers and cuties. I pray as I ignore another muscle-bound boaster, “Please God, next year? Let them give me a toaster.” © Sandy Gillis

Still a place to grow, still a gathering place for exchanging stories, setting differences aside, still feasting up here on the Range. ©Lyn Browne

HeN it CoMeS to re-establishing native vegetation we tend to concentrate on the planting of trees and shrubs and if we’re lucky maybe a few Lomandra. But to truly re-establish a diverse ecosystem we must help establish all the groundcovers too such as grasses, herbs, small shrubs and ferns. Groundcover plants are crucial in providing a safe home for ground-based animals such as skinks, frogs, snakes, bush rats, antechinus and of course a whole host of insects (don’t say yuk, think of them as bird food!) Also crucial are groundcover plants in providing the food resources such as seed, fruit, leaf and tubers to everything from birds, butterflies and beetles right through to wallabies and kangaroos (if you’ve got a really big backyard). Groundcover plantings can be very rewarding for you if you love your native fauna, because they can be very rich in the resources they provide and, in effect, act like a magnet for native fauna in your area! Planting native groundcovers in your own backyard (as well as trees and shrubs) is often even easier than in a big revegetation project, because the small plants are vulnerable to weed competition and your input with mulch and weeding can be vital in establishing native groundcovers. Control of groundcover weeds is crucial while establishing native groundcovers, for example lawn grasses such as couch,

carpet grass and kikuyu need to be eliminated and subject to ongoing control through blanket mulching and or weeding. once well established though, native groundcovers can outcompete and shade out the weeds. the great thing about many groundcovers is that they are easy to grow yourself by either directly transplanting around your garden or establishing in pots to plant later. Plants such as Native Violets (Viola banksii), Pennyroyal (Mentha sp.), Creeping Beard Grass (Oplismenus spp.) and Pollia (Pollia crispata) are just a few of our local native groundcovers that you can propagate easily through cuttings and runners. Native grasses such as Kangaroo Grass (Themeda triandra), Barbed Wire Grass (Cymbopogon refractus), Native Sorghum (Sarga leiocladum) and Poa (Poa labilardieri) are easy to grow from seed or transplant as seedlings. All the plants listed above are available through Forest Heart ecoNursery. our place is buzzing (or should that be tweeting) with a huge diversity of small birds at the moment including red Brow Finch, New Holland Honey eater, Golden Whistler, red Backed Fairy Wren, Lewin’s Honey eater, Whip Birds and many more. None of our plantings are much older than 11 years, but the dense plantings of groundcovers and low shrubs near the house provide home and food for these little critters and so many more.

W

iNter iSN’t oVer yet and although with gradually increasing day length all our shrubs, trees and groundcovers, plus of course weeds, will resume growth, that does not mean an immediate increase in food supply for the wildlife. Winter can be a lean time with reduced availability of nectar-producing plants, and also fruit. As we plan our next revegetation project, or think about the spring and summer garden, spare a thought for future seasonal availability of food for the birds, insects and other creatures that depend on quality food for survival. Winter flowering banksias provide nectar during the lean season so observe the flowering times in your area. that will vary from coast to hinterland and to some extent from year to year. Banksia robur flowers sporadically during the winter and its mature woody fruit containing seed pods are a source of food for the Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoos. Banksia aemula is a late winter, early

Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoo spring flowerer and a very attractive small tree with its reddish knobbly bark. Banksia spinulosa will flower from autumn to winter and is flowering now in the hinterland. it’s a great garden shrub. our favourite bottle brushes generally flower in spring with a smaller display in autumn, but look for any with an alternative flowering time. Some produce a few flowers sporadically.

Fortunately, our local wattles don’t wait until “Wattle day” in September and from now on will be providing pollen for the bees and other insects. Fruit can be trickier but Callicarpa pedunculata, Velvet Bush, has clusters of small blue fruit, loved by pigeons. Prune this one in the garden, let it go in the revegetation. For best growth, provide full sun. Acronychia oblongifolia, White Acronychia, has been dropping its creamy white edible fruit and is an attractive small tree with glossy foliage. Pipturus argenteus, Native Mulberry, always has birds in amongst the leaves looking for tiny fruit or insects. it’s a good pioneer and edge plant in the revegetation. there are choices, so plan ahead and if all else fails, a split ripe banana will be quickly demolished by Lewin honeyeaters and/or small marsupials.

iNter iS iN full swing, and it is the optimal time for carrying out major pruning work on mature trees. in much the same way that you can bare-root transplant stone fruit trees at this time of year, so you can also make larger pruning wounds on established trees without as much fear that it will upset the health of the tree. this is partly because sap flow slows down or almost stops, so you don’t lose vital fluids from the wound. A bit later in winter is even more ideal because spring is just around the corner, bringing with it an increase in sap flow, thereby enabling the tree to start the amazing process of dealing with

the wound. this illustrates again what incredible self-managing systems these majestic organisms are. they just quietly go about their extraordinary business of turning sunlight into sugar and carbon dioxide into oxygen, sequestering carbon, and helping to drive our water cycle. these are just some of the things we benefit from. in addition, they also possess astonishing methods for dealing with wounding, shedding redundant parts of themselves, and circulating nutrients around themselves. recent science shows that trees communicate with each other via their

AroL ANd i first met Susan as mutual members of the Montville Chamber of Commerce where she was establishing her real estate business in the Hinterland. Sometime later she joined forces with dee and established Brant and Bernhardt Property operating from Maleny and selling property across a wide geographical area. “We needed to downsize and relocate closer to our sporting interest and friends, so we engaged Susan and dee to sell our property in Palmwoods. it was refreshing to see a real estate business provide a detailed written report full of content and an accurate appraisal after the first visit which was near to the final sale price. “our property was sold within two weeks of going to market. Several open house sessions were conducted with good attendance generated by the brilliant marketing and fantastic level of detail.

“Susan and dee provided detailed reports on each occasion with potential buyers and a clear strategy throughout the whole process. “through the final phases of settlement, they provided guidance and comfort that what needed to be done was taken care of in an efficient and professional manner. they were there every step of the way through the whole process. “We found Susan and dee to be honest, reliable, dedicated and hardworking, but most of all really good people with great real estate knowledge and attention to detail.” Brant & Bernhardt Property 2/20 Maple Street, Maleny Susan 0428 573 170 Dee 0423 259 931 www.brantandbernhardt.com.au HiNterLANd tiMeS – JuLY 2019

When hinterland locals need a lightbulb, pot of paint or power tool, they can always visit Manager John Brown and his efficient, friendly team at Mitre 10, Maleny. Knowing this is a stalwart shop in the town, we stopped by for a quick Q&A with the man in charge! John Brown (second from left) with some of his team: Josie, Vickie , Bruce and Jack

The man behind Mitre 10 Where did you grow up? i was born in Sydney and lived there until the age of 12 when our family moved to darwin. All my teen years were spent there.

pointed to a live echidna which was asleep near one of the shelves. We to this day have no idea how he had got in without being seen.

What are the most popular products? What made you move to Maleny? We had friends living in Maleny and holidayed here a few times. We loved the climate and the laid-back atmosphere of the town as well as the friendliness of the locals. it reminded me of darwin in the early days. We were looking at moving from darwin and this seemed like the perfect choice. As it turned out, it was the right choice.

How long have you been running Mitre 10? And when/why did it become Mitre 10? i started the range Hardware 25 years ago initially as a thrifty Link Hardware and changed to Mitre 10 about nine years ago. Changing to Mitre 10 was a decision i did not take lightly and procrastinated over it for nearly six months. it was only when a sales rep told me that the hardest part of making the change is making the decision to change. that turned the light on for me and i made the change immediately.

Do you have any funny stories from working here? there was a funny incident a number of years ago when a customer asked me if i could give him a price on something halfway down the aisle. He took me to it and

Paint and Garden products are our biggest departments although one of our biggest sellers are ear plugs. there are a lot of snorers in Maleny.

If you weren’t running Mitre 10, what would you like to do? if i wasn't running the store i would like to travel more and also get more involved in volunteer work within the local community. in a small community such as ours, you do see the difference volunteers make to the region.

What is your favourite thing about working at Mitre 10, Maleny? the best thing about being in the hardware store is that it never gets boring. You are constantly learning, and no two days are the same. there are many regulars who we enjoy a chat with, and the staff have all been with me for many years and are just like family.

If you had to share any hardware advice, what would it be? the best hardware advice i can give is to measure twice and cut once. Also, if in doubt leave it out.

The Herder Western Mongolia

the water is icy and he gasps, as he splashes it over his nose and chin but it does nothing to stem the flow of blood. i put the kettle on to warm some water and drag a chair over to him. Allen looks up calmly and says, “don’t worry, he’s just having a serious nosebleed from the cold.” As the bleeding slowly subsides he cleans blood from his face and hands. Bending over, he wipes the blood from his boots and the front of his dark green winter ‘del’. i hand him fresh clothes, which he stuffs down the front of his ‘del’. Looking deeply into my eyes, he leans over and takes my hands firmly into his huge calloused, warm hands. the human connection is palpable. Walking off a few steps, he stops and turns back to look at me again and with a slight nod of his head, he turns towards the distant mountains and strides away, back to his herd. Rensina van den Heuvel guides a tour in Mongolia each year which she runs in partnership with a Mongolian family. She can be contacted on 0487 313 566.

t’S 8AM ANd -5 CeLCiuS. Holy smokes. oooooh! it’s sooooo cold! Getting dressed under three sleeping bags, in the back of the Land rover is no mean feat. the sun creeps over the distant snow-capped mountains and streams into the car; stirring the thin layer of ice on the windows. A call to prayer wafts up from the small picturesque town of olgii, which lays down in the valley. Allen is already up, frozen fingers and all, tussling with a puncture in the tyre so we won’t be leaving in a hurry. it’s sticky sweet rice with sultanas for breakfast on this glorious morning under a magnificent sapphire blue sky. the familiar whistles of the herder sing on the wind. Moments later a herd of over 100 sheep and goats, of every colour, swarm up over a rise. the herder sits astride a white horse as he takes the flock up into the hills to graze. With binoculars, i get a closer look at an older man, short with a very chunky build. He’s dressed in a dark traditional ‘del’ with a bright orange sash.

A herder travels through a spectacular Central Mongolian sunset

the Mongolian dismounts, leaving his horse and walks in our direction. As he approaches, he appears to stagger, leaning forward as he walks. “Vodar! Vodar!” he calls out; distress evident in his tone. At ten metres away, i see that he has his hands clasped together, under his chin and they’re covered in blood. in fact, there is blood everywhere, half of his face is covered, pouring through his fingers and dripping down onto his ‘del’. the man tilts his head, peering up at me, with a look of imploring helplessness. i rush to him, handing him toilet paper and with a bottle, i pour some water into his cupped hands.

An Ayurvedic understanding of heart problems

H

eArt diSeASe is generally understood to be a disorder of the organ of the heart. However, Ayurveda understands that heart disease is a result Wendy Rosenfeldt of physical, mental and emotional factors and takes into account the influence of diet and lifestyle on the whole physiology, rather than just focusing on fixing up the faulty parts such as heart valves or diseased arteries. Cardiovascular disease refers to a wide range of health problems from blocked arteries to irregular heart beats. Knowledge of the Ayurvedic theory of doshas helps to understand why a particular risk factor, such as stress, smoking or poor diet, would predispose one person towards a particular heart disorder more than another. Ayurveda understands each disorder in terms of imbalance in a particular dosha or subdosha. our predominant dosha type can also help us to understand what is most likely to go out of balance and therefore needs more attention. the health of our heart is governed by the smooth functioning of all three doshas. Sadhaka Pitta, a subdosha of Pitta, is responsible for emotional balance; Avalambaka Kapha, a subdosha of Kapha, governs strength and stability of the chest area while Vyana Vata, a subdosha of Vata, is responsible for the blood flow and heart beat. due to these different aspects of heart functioning, health advice is based on pacifying the dosha which is out of balance. Pulse diagnosis provides the Ayurvedic practitioner with a non-invasive tool to determine the health of your heart. When out of balance, Sadhaka Pitta can give rise to anger, frustration, high blood pressure and in extreme cases heart attack, stroke and chest pain. overwork, anger, stress and stimulants such as alcohol and excess caffeine all contribute towards increasing Pitta. Sadhaka Pitta is soothed by relaxation, meditation, gentle, non-competitive exercise and being in nature. Foods such as sweet fresh fruit, asparagus and leafy greens are most suitable when Sadhaka Pitta is aggravated. Avoiding excessive amounts of red meat, chilli and food additives will also assist in pacifying Pitta’s fire. Avalambaka Kapha, out of balance, can cause lethargy, chest congestion and heart pain. Combined with toxins and poor digestion, excess Kapha can contribute towards the build up of cholesterol and plaque in the arteries.

to balance Avalambaka Kapha and reduce the build up of fatty deposits reduce heavy, hard to digest foods such as red meat, cheese, saturated fats and sugar. Favour wholegrains, fresh fruit and vegetables. Sipping warm boiled water helps to digest the build up of impurities and cleanse the system. regular exercise without strain will enhance the overall metabolism and bring balance to Avalambaka Kapha. When Vyana Vata goes out of balance it can contribute to problems in blood pressure and heart arrhythmia. Stress, anxiety and overstimulation of the senses all aggravate Vyana Vata. Vata is balanced by rest, having a good routine, warm meals and warm oil massages. Gentle exercise such as walking, swimming or yoga is also beneficial in keeping Vata pacified. transcendental Meditation is particularly soothing for Vyana Vata, as the heartbeat is found to become balanced and steady and blood pressure problems are found to normalise with regular practice Stress is a leading factor in heart disorders. When the physiology is stressed it goes into the fight or flight response. Hormones and biochemicals are released which activate the cardiovascular system placing it under greater pressure. Chronic stress weakens the cardiovascular system and also contributes towards other risk factors such as hypertension, poor eating habits and an increase in addictive substances such as nicotine, alcohol and drugs. in contrast, during transcendental Meditation the physiology goes into a state of profound rest and the heart rate slows down dramatically. in this state of deep rest the body throws off stress, repairs and revitalises. due to this release of stress the individual is then able to make more lifesupporting dietary and lifestyle choices.

N exCitiNG AreA of brain research, Psycho Neuro immunology PNI for short, is revealing the way our thoughts and feelings affect our immune system and also how our immune system affects our thoughts and feelings. our everyday routines or even our concerns about world events, can wind us up and set in motion a silent process of unconscious reactive internal communication without us filtering this dialogue that is signaling the release of chemicals that have a very, very powerful effect on our well being. try a little experiment this next few weeks, interrupt the mindless chatter and the unruly emotional reactions that occur to ask yourself, “is this really true?”, “do i really mean what i'm telling myself?” and you may find that you don't mean it at all. often our internal raves spring from things other than what we are frustrated with. But never-the-less the effect on our immune system is still very powerful. did you know that the way we handle stress and the social support we think/feel we have or haven't got contributes to the likelihood of us catching a cold or flu. And did you know that stress can affect the body’s ability to heal wounds or even that stress can reactivate latent viruses that lie dormant in our body.

When tests were done on mice, (i know you’re not a mouse) but still, stress was found to grow and spread tumours more quickly. Stress can contribute to excess inflammation by stimulating pro inflammatory cytokines that direct inflammation in the body and can even increase levels of depression experienced. one or more of the following suggestions might help to restore balance to your chemistry and bring a greater peace to your body. eat wholesome meals (no junk food please, some people tend to sabotage themselves (“i don’t care if this is good for me or not, i deserve a treat” thinking) when they are feeling stressed or emotionally upset. Consider nutritional supplements to support your body. talk to a friend or write down what’s really bothering you in a journal. interrupt your daily routine, rest for a moment or two, soften your body and your breathing, let yourself feel, and think of someone or something you love. think of how so many of the problems that held you captive in the past resolved themselves or you survived them. Consider having a healing session and reconnect to a wisdom and strength that is a part of your true nature. Love your body back into peace and balance as it was meant to be.

eNtioN tHe BroNZe Medallion and a lot of people will know that it’s to do with swimming and a Lifesaving award. But how many people have ever heard of the Grey Medallion? the Grey Medallion is a special Life Saving award created for the over 50s by the royal Life Saving Society and you don’t have to be able to swim to participate. the program helps people to learn essential emergency care skills and life saving that could one day save family members, friends or even your own life. on the Sunshine Coast most of us have easy access to water, be it dams, lakes, rivers, creeks, pool and the sea. Many older Australians also care for their grandchildren after school and during the holidays, and many have pools or use inland waterways. And we are all prone to having accidents from time to time! “the Grey Medallion is definitely not a swimming award, and you don’t even have to be physically fit to do it. People don’t need to be able to swim. it’s a two-day course that teaches how to act in emergency situations both on land and around the water. “We cover emergency care, CPr, how to use a defibrillator, marine stings, first aid and water-wise skills. We also teach “dry rescue” skills, where you don’t even need to get into the water.” explained Patricia Barry, Grey Medallion trainer. “Most people accept that beaches can be dangerous, but inland waterways have been the highest risk drowning areas for some years now so we would love to see more from the Hinterland doing this course as it’s just as relevant to them as it is for people who live at the beach,” added Patricia.

Why do my children’s heels get sore?

W

itH tHe WiNter sports season just about to get underway, this article is a useful explanation of why your child may be complaining that their heels are getting sore. Heel pain, caused by calcaneal apophysitis (also called Sever’s disease) is a common cause of heel pain in physically active children. the condition can be very painful but is only temporary and has no long term effects. Children will describe pain at the back of the heel where the growth plate has not yet fully developed and calcified. it usually occurs in early adolescence when children grow most rapidly. this growth spurt can begin any time, approximately between the ages of 9-12 in girls and 10-12 in boys. A large tendon called the Achilles tendon joins the calf muscle at the back of the leg, to the heel. Severs disease is thought to occur because of a mismatch in growth of the heel bones to the calf muscle and Achilles tendon. if the bones grow faster than the muscles, the Achilles tendon that attaches the muscle to the heel gets tight. At the same time, until the cartilage of the calcaneum is ossified (turned into bone), it is a potential weak spot. the tight calf muscle and Achilles tendon cause a traction injury on this weak spot, resulting in inflammation and pain. Such stresses result from sports or activities that require a lot of running, jumping and landing, especially on hard surfaces. examples would include football, netball and track running. How Can Physiotherapy Help? the immediate goal of treatment is pain relief. the symptoms will generally worsen during or after activity so the most important aspect of treatment initially is rest or activity modification. Physiotherapy treatment may include: • diagnosis of the problem, • ‘Hands-on’ therapy - massage, mobilisation, exercises • taping & learning to tape for sport • Advice about relative rest from activity –

physiotherapists can help work out what, and how much activity is ideal • Cold packs for approximately 15 mins after physical activity • Correction of any biomechanical issues, shoe inserts if necessary • time! Generally the pain will ease, although there may be flare-ups from time to time with growth and increased physical activity. For assessment and management of your child’s heel pain, call Maleny Physiotherapy for an appointment with Tim, Mary or Andrew, 5494 3911

L

ASt WeeK SCott MorriSoN spelled out what he called his economic policy. But, as usual, it was little more than a series of motherhood slogans about the need for more productivity, less regulation, and a spot of union bashing for good measure—nothing new, nothing of real substance, much like the prime minister himself. Basically it was all about tax cuts, because this is the one and only idea Scott Morrison can convincingly articulate: tax cuts were his election policy and he won the election. So it follows that if he can bully the parliament into legislating them, the economy will spring to life like a startled gazelle, the surplus will be delivered, confidence will be restored, employment will rise, wages will revive, spending will soar and we will all bask in the promise of Australia forever after. Well, putting $20 a week in the pockets of the least wealthy, who will spend them because they must, may help,

The economy but it is hard to see how the rest of the package – the bits that will have to wait for another six years – will turn the economy gangbusters. one of ScoMo’s business spruikers said bravely it would give people something to look forward to – the archetypal pie in the sky. then there is the need to unleash our animal spirits, cruelly entangled in red and green tape, which he defines as “the regulatory and bureaucratic barriers to business”. others might characterise such rules as a bare minimum required to protect the public from exploitation – wasn’t that what the banking royal commission proved, not to mention aged care facilities and of course the construction industry, from which new buildings are being evacuated regularly to ensure basic safety. But hey, we need more animal spirits, nature and free enterprise red in tooth and claw, and so we are inviting the business sector – the exploiters, both real and potential – to give us their agenda. Consumers, environmentalists, and other busybodies need not apply. And as for the unionists – well, hush your mouth. time for yet another ritual bashing in the name of industrial relations reform, again to be masterminded by the impeccably impartial employers, who have thrown their tired old prescriptions on to the counter as if they had suddenly discovered a cure for cancer. Get rid of unfair dismissal laws, they chorus – let us sack more people, that should boost jobs and growth. And remove the provision that replacing new awards must include a “better off over all” standard – “no disadvantage” is more than sufficient, until we can get around to actually slashing terms and conditions as true free enterprise demands. Scott Morrison’s propagandist powerhouses, the Murdoch press and the institute of Public Affairs, have already made it clear that their real nirvana will be the re-introduction of the feudal system, But why be politically correct, let’s get out of the bubble and be fair dinkum: how good is slavery? And just for starters, we want laws to allow us to deregister unions we don’t like (meaning just about all of them, but in particular the hated CFMMeu). that should get productivity going gangbusters. the unions have always been a convenient whipping boy for the coalition, but using them in their traditional role at this moment in history is even more opportunist than usual – it is based purely on the embarrassment of John Setka. in fact the union movement has seldom been more impotent. Not only has its membership dwindled to the point where it is seriously endangered, but its real influence is minimal. this is why we have wage stagnation, now conceded by everyone from the reserve Bank to struggling employees as the major and most urgent problem confronting the floundering economy.

And it is why industrial disputes – strikes – have diminished to insignificance. the bogey men, the big bad union bosses now exist only in the fantasies of the right wing warriors who cannot face the reality that actually a lot of the mess is their own fault – and they have absolutely no idea of how to fix it. And the irony is that their tentative solutions are firmly against their own neoliberal ethos. energy prices too high? Government intervention, control, regulation, more red tape to restrain the animal spirits of the power companies. it probably won’t happen and if it does it almost certainly won’t work. But such is Morrison’s desperation to provide an agenda – any agenda – that the contradictions entailed in his manifesto have to be overlooked in the hope that someone, somewhere, will take him seriously. What is actually needed, as the rBA Governor Phillip Lowe wearily repeats, is stimulus – interest rates by themselves can no longer suffice to end the malaise. A more ambitious program of infrastructure might help. to which Morrison replies we already have one – it’s just not stimulating yet. in fact, actual construction went backwards last year. But eventually it might work - when it trickles down … And then there was innovation – we have to be daring, smart, in the forefront of developments – except, of course, if they involve the biggest challenge and opportunity of all, climate change, which Morrison could not bring himself to mention. Ah, yes, we remember innovation, way back in 2015, when Malcolm turnbull became prime minister and was innovating like buggery, being agile and nimble all over the place. Admittedly not a lot happened – the business community decided that there was no point in taking risks when the government was already depressing wages and pushing profits up quite nicely, thank you, and could be relied on to keep doing so. the likelihood of some damascene conversion, however miraculous Morrison pretends, is at best minimal. But Morrison is relying on the business community for guidance and direction – he is their leader, so he must follow them. However, perhaps not just yet – first he had to jet off to the G20 to tell donald trump and xi Jinping how to run their economies. of course they won’t take any notice of him either, but there could be a decent photo opportunity in it. And there was plenty of time for shmoozing the donald, and even inviting him to come to a game of golf in Melbourne. Now that should get the economy moving. or at least the headlines, which are what really matters. The views expressed in Mungo's column are his and not necessarily the views of the HT team.
