i

’M sLoWLY GettiNG back into the swing of things after six weeks of no packed lunches, no after-school activities or saturday morning sports, and a few decent lie-ins! school starting again does bring its benefits, however, as i can work without distraction and get my ‘ducks in a row’ for the month ahead. i am very mindful that it has been an incredibly tough time for many people with Australia’s extreme weather. our Poets’ Corner this month reflects this, i have had many locals writing in with their poems about the drought, the bushfires and their impact.

What is heartening, however, is seeing how much communities have rallied around those who need help – and of course, the rural fire services, volunteers, and animal rescuers who have been tirelessly out there making a difference. our gratitude, assistance and donations have hopefully kept them buoyed up through this intense and exhausting time, and we must, of course, keep the support going through the recovery process. We have a few fundraisers across our pages, so please get behind these events – every cent makes a difference! on another supportive note, February is often a quieter time

for small businesses and eateries, so with Valentine’s day coming up, it’s a perfect time to support them: buying unique gifts or a meal made with delicious local produce. (in fact, i am supporting a local business right now, having a creamy coffee in my Montville ‘office’!) if you are pondering where to eat, check our Food, drink and dine section for a selection of lovely spots across the hinterland to treat yourselves. i hope you enjoy your Ht this month – i am impressed and inspired in equal measure by the individuals and organisations who feature in our pages. Remember, if you know someone whose story could be a great addition, please let us know. i happily receive regular poems and letters – however sometimes a letter will come through asking me questions, with no return name or address. if you would like me to reply, you do need to put these details, please. i wish you all a positive month ahead, and i’ll sign off for now with this lovely quote by Barbara de Angelis, which i feel much of our community is clearly demonstrating at this time.

Arts community donate for fundraiser A hinterland fundraiser dinner to support those affected by the ongoing bushfire crisis has been announced for February 23, 6-9pm at Altitude on Montville.

A

GRouP oF hinterland locals have banded together with businesses and artists to create a fundraising dinner for people and wildlife affected by the ongoing bushfire crisis in Victoria and NsW. A three-course dinner with wine and beer is on offer with live entertainment and an auction of generously donated prizes. Altitude on Montville, together with their suppliers and staff, have provided full support to ensure 100% of the ticket price, $100 per person, goes to charity. one of the event organisers, Heather Child, says this is an opportunity for the hinterland community to show their support for other small communities in southern states doing it tough. “there is a lot of talk amongst locals here about the devastation to people, farms and wildlife in NsW and Victoria as a result of the bushfire crisis. We feel their hurt and pain having watched the horrific scenes on our tV wondering how we can help. “this event is a way that the sunshine Coast can send our support to help the recovery of people, land and wildlife”.

All money raised from the ticket price, auction and raffle will be evenly split between wildlife charities WiRes and Wildlife Victoria and BlazeAid - a charity dedicated to helping rebuild fences and other structures destroyed the bushfires.

Auction prizes range from a Gary Myers painting of the Glass House Mountains valued at $4,500, hand-blown glass pieces by tina Cooper and Wolfgang engel, a Judith Laws piece titled ‘Afterglow’ donated by Art on Cairncross, hand-painted limited edition cushions by sir donald James Walters and vouchers for illume Creations in Montville, Range Pilates studio, two family passes to Maleny dairies and more.

ARY BRAYLeY is a leader the community clearly bonds with. the smile he offers and the smiles he elicits from locals visiting the station is a testament to that - and Nambour Police are heavily involved in the community. “We have police involved with Neighbourhood Watch and the Adopt-a-Cop program,� shares Gary. “We also interact with school classes that want to visit and some great people from the community who want to come by.� they also have a school-based police officer at Nambour state College, creating positive connections between the youth and law enforcement. “Greg is one of the school-based police officers and we are really lucky to have him at Nambour College. He does a really good job and the kids love him, they engage well with him and he has the rapport established now where he can positively affect and interact with the kids. He is also a talented musician and that makes him very popular!�

Gary says it was great to hear the news of the muchneeded new police station for Nambour next year. “this was originally an extension to the original building and police have been occupying it for about 13 years now; its adequate but it’s far from the type of building we now need. “they design police stations now with proper custodyholding facilities and property management systems (for all the exhibits and property seized that we hold until we find an owner) while also catering for detectives and the

criminal investigation unit and all the equipment they need. “Part of the plan for the new building is to have a ‘look alike room’ and that is a room that is set up with a homely feel about it rather than a clinical feel that a police station may have for a young child, to try and provide an opportunity for those victims to then be comfortable enough to tell police what happened. “it’s all about trying to make them feel as comfortable as possible in a foreign environment. it is going to be fantastic to have a building that meets contemporary standards.�

Gary believes Nambour has a bit of a stigma about it that it doesn’t necessarily deserve, and it has a reputation for being a busy place to work policing wise. “it does have a fairly high level of violence with

disturbances, drug and alcohol and domestic violence and whilst it has got those statistics, the team that work here are really happy to be here.”

Ask most people around the town and you also hear the locals really want a police beat in the CBd and believe this will help boost public safety and therefore boost the local shopping economy.

Gary says he is aware that a central police beat has been an idea discussed by the community for several years. “i understand completely why people want that in the CBd. We have our fair share of problems with public nuisance-related offences around parts of the CBd and a police presence would go a long way to helping prevent those issues. “i am very mindful of the public when they say they are not feeling safe and how that might mean that people are not shopping and how we can partner with other services to make sure that the town is safer for people.”

Gary says initiatives like the town markets are fantastic for the community. “i have had a few conversations with people on the beat patrol that the markets that now happen every thursday

in the town centre area have activated that space in such a positive way. With more people around, that displaces the criminal element people might be worried about and while the markets are on it has a better vibe about it and people feel safer.”

Gary says his amazing wife, who also works for Queensland Police in an admin role in Beerwah, has always been his rock and greatest supporter. they were married in october 1988 when just three weeks later he was off to the police academy. “she has been behind me for the past 30 years and followed me out to all those different isolated places.

Not once has she ever complained of the places we have gone and some of these places, like Bulya, is a place three hours south of Mount isa. A really dry and desolate place. definitely not everyone’s cup of tea. “it’s great to be back in Nambour with a strong team. We have a gazetted strength of 31, i would say that at least 30% of those have been here longer than me. some have been here 20 years. We also have a tremendous laugh here, there are some extremely funny people that work here. [in an intense job] You’ve got to be able to have a laugh.” in a tough but crucial job in the community it is reassuring to know there is someone like Gary Brayley Nambour’s Senior Sergeant Police Officer in Charge, Gary Brayley at the helm.

MiLY HiNCKFuss is a teenager who marches to the beat of her own drum. the 16-year-old, daughter of artist Karen Gane and musician Kim Hinckfuss, was nurtured in the vibrant social scene of Maleny and educated in her formative years at the River school where Neohumanist philosophy builds a solid foundation based on love, care and respect for all.

Now a student at Maleny state High school, emily reflects: “i’m glad i didn’t grow up in the city. i love the barefoot freedom of living in a country town and, it’s good to be where it’s not so easy to have everything you want.” emily’s comment reminds me of my own barefoot childhood in a country town, albeit 50 years ago and, as we speak, i ponder the commonalities and differences.

Generally, a girl’s life in the ‘60s was charted by social norms such as class, creed and beliefs like learning to be a wife and mother rather than focusing on an education. And, at the age of 14, i left high school to help support our family of seven. My first job as a junior shop assistant paid a weekly wage of five pounds, ten shillings. i gave my mum five pounds. i am inspired by youth like emily Hinckfuss who have enquiring minds, demonstrate a social conscience and embrace opportunities to explore the world.

A student of the Japanese language, emily recently returned from the high school’s biannual study tour to Japan. “the trip to Japan was excellent! We went by train to our homestay city of sakura, were met by our hosts, then in the presence of the Mayor and Principal of the school, i was interviewed for the newspaper on behalf of the students from Australia.” emily’s interest in Japanese began in Years 7 and 8 at high school. she then chose to continue these studies along with psychology and sciences and was presented with an Academic Merit Award in 2019.

“i enjoy philosophy and psychology-based subjects. i like to trace things back and explore how that would be the case, or why that is.”

Following in the creative footsteps of her mum and dad, emily’s interests extend to art and music.

“Mum likes painting, i prefer drawing. i began when i was about four. By the time i was old enough to draw dinosaurs, i discovered the next best thing, dragons…dinosaurs with

wings! that was a huge phase.

“Now i’m into anime which is Japanese animation. the subtitles help with learning the language. Whenever i’m watching and see a character i like, i press pause and draw it.”

Regarding music, emily took me back to those beginnings when she teamed up with her friend of 14 years, oscar Langton: “We lived in a shared house and my love of music was mostly influenced by playing with oscar. there were marimbas on the verandah and a couple of trampolines in the front yard.

“We would go from jumping on the trampoline to playing the marimba and back again! some kids played with Lego, we played marimba! “the marimba led me to play piano. And, i also like drums because you can drum on anything, but with a piano, you have to have a piano.”

When emily was 14, she was invited to join a 23-piece street band, The Unusual Suspects, started in 2012 by Linsey Pollak. she explains: “i play this thing called a doof. it’s a recycled chemical container with a hole at the base to amplify sound. When hit with a mallet it makes a low ‘doof’ sound, hence the name. “i’ve played with The Unusual Suspects at the Woodford Folk Festival for the past couple of years. My instrument was the tapan, a Macedonian drum. “then, about a year ago, Linsey formed a small group and asked me to join.” the group, Selani (meaning ‘village people’ in Macedonian) is a traditional Macedonian folk music band. their sunday community dance gatherings were hosted by the Welcome to Maleny - Refugee support Group. i watched while Linsey invited and instructed onlookers in simple Macedonian circle folk dances. emily kept beat while drone-based music with harmonic flavour drew people together. this experience took me back 50 years to dances in a country town CWA Hall. We touched on friendships, and peer pressure: “it doesn’t really affect me because i’m not a very social person and don’t go with stereotypes. “i only like spending time with people i’m close to. And ironically, you can only be close to someone if you spend time with them - the rest are glorified acquaintances.”

And, on world affairs: “it’s hard for me to talk about this without getting philosophical,” she replies with a wisdom beyond her years. “the younger generation is more relaxed about what’s happening in the world. the older generation tend to interpret that as meaning we don’t care. that’s not true. it’s just that we have a lived history that creates a different understanding. But we do have ideas that are worth listening to.” then and now - 50 years, a generational gap. i compare 16-year-old emily, an independent thinker with abundant opportunities, to my 16year-old self and welcome the emergence of women from the shadow of patriarchal ideology.

Now, thanks to the crusade of a group of determined and compassionate locals, that is being addressed through Compassionate Housing Affordability Solutions Maleny (CHASM).

oMeLessNess is sLoWLY becoming an untethered blight on Australian society.

According to the Australian Human Rights Commission, “older women (those aged 55 and over) was the fastest growing cohort of homeless Australians between 2011 and 2016, increasing by 31%”. st Vincent de Paul society Northern diocesian president John Harrison, says 21% of the homeless population are over the age of 55. “it is actually a growing segment of the homelessness market, and it’s typical of this situation where a woman has been divorced and often finds they have no superannuation and they have to live on Newstart,” he says. this is not news to Maleny local Margaret McKenzie, chairperson of CHAsM, who adds that in Maleny, Airbnb is another culprit, pricing people out of the rental market.

Growing up in a large Catholic family where it was second nature to take in ‘strays’, Margaret has a wealth of community service experience, having served with both federal and state governments.

When she became aware of the housing issues in Maleny, she was eager to help. “doing my volunteering at the Neighbourhood Centre, the centre provides emergency relief to people in need. that can be food, utensils, linen, tents if they are sleeping rough, or a swag. so through the statistics that we collect there, i could see how many people were in need. “one year, there were 80 people. Now they didn’t all

your own backyard stay homeless for the whole year, but when i looked at the figures for that year, i was shocked at just how many people were in that homeless category. “they were sometimes sleeping rough, sometimes they were couch surfing, sometimes they were sleeping in their car. sometimes they would get somewhere to stay for a few weeks and then that would fall through,” she explains. “they are all different age groups and there were women and children. there was a father and several children living in a car.”

At this point, Margaret is quick to dispel any misconceptions that Maleny’s homeless people are all drug or alcohol addicts.

As she clarifies, some are working and studying. sometimes their assets have been depleted through divorce.

Artists, performers and young people who work in the service industry are the lifeblood of Maleny’s tourism, but can be on irregular incomes. Mostly the homeless are people who are simply struggling, priced out of the market, she says.

“Airbnb has removed so much of what was affordable rental accommodation in town, and so a lot of people have had to move away.” it’s easy to see why. A quick Google of Airbnb shows that Maleny has an extensive listing of properties where visitors can expect to pay around $100 a night while the typical weekly rent in Maleny is $365 for a unit, or $435 for a 3bedroom house. the Newstart allowance for a single person or someone aged over 60 is $604 a fortnight, not nearly enough to cover the weekly rent of a unit. “the Neighbourhood Centre and the Maleny Rotary Club facilitated some research in 2014 which indicated there was a growing problem with homelessness in Maleny,” shares Margaret.

“Following on from this, the Neighbourhood Centre held a community consultation in 2015 to discuss the housing

issues affecting the town and explore some possible solutions. CHAsM came out of this process.”

CHAsM followed up by investigating possible options for providing affordable rental housing to locals. eventually, an agreement was reached with the Maple street Co-op to put a small relocatable home in the Coop’s community garden. this would be a win-win situation for both CHAsM and the Co-op which was looking for someone to help with its vegie garden. they had the land, next they needed a house.

Margaret and her fellow band of CHAsM workers then busily set about raising money and securing grants which would see the project to completion. Along the way, they took every opportunity to promote their project and encourage others to be part of the solution.

With some help from local builder, Ross Meneely, and the Whitehouse Foundation, a relocatable house was purchased and installed in the Maple street Co-op’s community garden in october 2019. once all the utilities are connected, Margaret expects the rent on the relocatable home to be about $180 per week, half the cost of a regular unit.

But that doesn’t mean their quest is over. this is only the beginning, says Margaret, and there are plenty of ways the community can help.

CHAsM welcomes cash donations but also asks residents to think about renting out a spare room. or if you have some space, think about putting a relocatable house in your backyard – CHAsM can help guide you through the process.

Hence the project name: Invest in your own backyard.

Sandy Creek Organic Farm sits happily in the beautiful valley of Beerwah, selling organic fruit, vegetables and nuts, with Les and Marji Nicholls as the caring, hardworking, ‘semi-retired’ owners. Writer, Jacqui Hensel, met with them recently to learn more about the process of running an environmentally-friendly farm.

AtCHed oVeR BY the Glasshouse Mountains, sandy Creek organic Farm has moved to another phase for Les and Marji Nicholls. the farm is set on deep alluvial soils with a richness that only comes from a lifetime of stewardship.

For Les, what he calls semi-retirement would be another man’s full-time work. But the love of organic production and a loyal customer base keeps Les from stepping away entirely. they are hardworking vegetable and fruit growers who are looking at retirement in a different way to the average person. they are still rising early to pack the produce they have grown to get it to the markets early on a sunday morning.

While the rest of us might be dawdling over the coffee and papers, Les and Marji have already put in a good day’s work.

“For some reason i always wanted to be a farmer. i don’t know where i got it from. My grandfather was a forester in the ACt Forestry, but i think he would have liked to be a farmer. it’s really only in the last 100 years that we have moved away from farming. Before that, everyone knew farmers or had family who were in farming,” Les muses.

“My wife Marji and i bought a little farm before this one and i followed on from what the other farmer before me had done. i used the pesticides and herbicides. But it never sat well with me. there had to be a better way than killing everything. And what about the birds who needed to eat the insects i was killing? “it was so indiscriminate and i thought there must be a more intelligent and scientific way of growing produce,” Les said. this was in the 1990s, when the organic movement was just taking off in Australia. Les and Marji were in the vanguard of the movement. “i only knew of one other organic farmer in this area, but they only grew strawberries, so they knew a bit more than i

With his recent ‘grand opening’ in Maleny, opposite the town’s iGA, we had to chat with the man behind the scrumptious pies, Jamie Hodges and find out his plans for world pie domination… “the very first pie i made was back in 2004 for a farm shop in the uK,” shared Jamie. “it was steak and Hampshire Ale. i entered it into a competition and i won gold. i knew then and there that this is what i wanted to do.”

Arriving Home When Maggie, the Magpie Goose and Eric Echidna return from Italy back to Mapleton, they discover new happy memories. From old tractors to sweet, syrupy pancakes, art to waddling ducks, this picture story celebrates friendships, community, home and belonging.

What influences helped in making decisions while writing? using popular tourist names like Maleny showgrounds and the Barn on Flaxton helped me to shape the story. Mapleton Lilyponds park is a place where my grandchildren play, therefore it seemed important to include it in the story. i love Australian animals and thought children could identify with them easily. our native animals are popular overseas too.

and illustrators of kid’s books. Currently, i am working on a manuscript for adults that will be self- published in 2020. teacher notes are written by Marg to accompany this charming story, which is intended for families and children ages three and above.

How did the collaboration work with the artists? i approached a group of women one day who come together regularly at the Mapleton Library to paint, sketch and do botanical art. they agreed to take on the story. We then had to coordinate nine different styles to create the vision for the book. Watercolour scenes, coloured pencil and ink resulted in a vibrant Maleny showgrounds, the wood ducks crossing the road, cockatoos and children playing at the Lilyponds park.

What do you think works well in the story?

Probably the variety of places the animals visit, the scenery, plants and quirky conversations between Maggie and eric. i hope children enjoy the action and description of the animals, paying attention to the hidden lizard on nearly every page. the story promotes the region as a positive place to create happy memories. it is light- hearted and entertaining.

Ast MoNtH tHe Ht shared news of a forthcoming children’s picture book, Arriving Home, where nine local artists, called Mapleton Art, collaborated to contribute the illustrations. the book promotes some of the beautiful towns of the sunshine Coast Hinterland, and concludes with facts about the places and the animals (such as the long-nosed bandicoot and marbled velvet gecko). this month we talk to the book’s author, Marg Gibbs.

What do you want your book to do for readers? to enjoy making memories wherever you are. to celebrate community and friendships. to pay attention and respect the animals, flora and fauna. Mostly, i would like the book to bring a sparkle to someone’s day.

Marg, tell us what inspired you to write this story?

When my husband and i returned from a trip to italy, i thought how lovely it was to come home to a beautiful part of the world in Mapleton. it occurred to me that arriving home means feeling a sense of belonging and love. i thought about the attractions we have that make the sunshine Coast Hinterland a special place. i used animals and places to show the fun, beauty and appeal of our country towns.

Tell us about yourself, Marg as a writer. i love connecting to children through story, poetry and picture books. i belong to a writers group called the Round table, attend many literary conferences and workshops, write a blog, and share my love of children’s books with my ten grandchildren who live in Brisbane. My trip to the Bologna Book Fair in italy was the highlight of 2019. i have published poems in two anthologies and the Hinterland Times. i talk at primary schools about authors

WHICH BUSINESS STRUCTURE IS RIGHT FOR YOU? An important consideration to contemplate when starting a new business is the type of business structure that best suits your needs. Issues that you should consider when choosing the suitable structure range from on issues of liability and how best to protect yourself and your business from liability to financial and practical concerns.

1. SOLE TRADER Assets and liabilities of the business belongs to the owner of the business – you. As there is no fire wall between your personal and business assets you would be personally liable in all aspects of your business.

Some of the advantages are that this is a simple structure to set up and maintain; your retain effective control and as you are not an employee of your business you don’t have to make compulsory superannuation contributions, pay payroll tax or workers’ compensation for yourself.

The greatest disadvantage is the unlimited liability which means that your personal assets are at risk should you be sued.

2. PARTNERSHIPS A partnership is not a separate legal entity but rather an association of individuals or entitles which come together for the purpose of carrying on a business activity with a view to making a profit. The assets of the partnership belong to the individual partners jointly rather than to a separate legal entity. The greatest advantage is probably that it is relatively easy and cheap to set up. But again the main disadvantage is the issue of the joint and several liability of partners. In practical terms this means that should one partner be unable to pay his or her share of a partnership debt then the remaining partner is fully liable for the whole of that debt despite any agreement to the contrary between the partners.

3. COMPANY A company is a separate legal entity and capable of owning assets it its own name. The main advantages are that this structure has limited liability for its shareholders, it is a structure which is commercially well understood and accepted and there are many choices as to the distribution of profits and losses to the shareholders.

The greatest disadvantage is that it is expensive to set up and to maintain as it requires greater accounting and accountability obligations than say a sole trader. Control of the company lies with its directors so this may or may not be a disadvantage.

IN CONCLUSION As a guideline, the characteristics of a good business structure are flexibility so that the structure can cope with changing circumstances with minimum consequences to the business; minimisation of exposure to liability; minimisation of costs such as tax and the efficient distribution of profits and losses.

The Great Obi Clean Up, 2020

HeN A LoCAL platypus was found with a rubber band around it in early 2019, it was time for action. the Great obi Clean up was born to keep the beautiful local creek and surrounds free from potentially deadly trash. it has proved to be not only a boon for the local environment, but also a wonderful way of connecting with the community through positive activities. each successive clean up brings mud, trash and big smiles - 2019 saw four successful events held over the year, and this great regular event is set to continue in 2020. the obi Clean up, assisted by Barung Landcare, has won a Communities environment grant from Andrew Wallace’s office to help buy equipment for the event.

A trailer has been purchased from trailers2000 located at Beerwah, and the clean up team will soon be purchasing a kayak and nets to help gather rubbish from the waterway itself with minimal impact on the native flora and fauna. Also, on the list are first aid kits for each team and children’s gloves. the iGA Maleny has generously provided food for the hardworking volunteers at past events and is set to continue in the new year. the Maleny branch of the Rotary Club are also happily supporting the obi clean up this year, so they will be able to cover a considerably larger area than in the past.

The Great Obi Clean Up is set to be even greater in 2020!

Founded in Mapleton in 2004 by husband and wife team, Russell and Katherine Mcdonald, the practice has grown over the years to include four physiotherapists, one exercise physiologist and two receptionist staff.

Whilst still living in Canada, Russell and Katherine (both Australian) fell in love with the sunshine Coast Hinterland during a holiday back home visiting family. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We went back to Vancouver with the plan to return as soon as possible and start a new life in the country,â&#x20AC;? said Katherine. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We bought a little cottage with a gorgeous garden in dulong for our growing family and were pleasantly surprised to discover our local village at Mapleton had no physio clinic,â&#x20AC;? shared Katherine. â&#x20AC;&#x153;it felt like it was meant to be! â&#x20AC;&#x153;With the encouragement and support of the wonderful GPs at the Mapleton Medical Centre, we founded Range of Motion. Within a year we opened a satellite service in Kenilworth to provide physiotherapy to Mary Valley residents who were traveling up to one hour to access treatment. â&#x20AC;&#x153;A few years later we were asked by a local GP to join their practice and we moved our Kenilworth clinic to the town of imbil, giving us the opportunity to service both the Mary Valley and Gympie region.â&#x20AC;? the professional and friendly reputation of Range of Motion Physiotherapy meant they became a preferred

provider for ochre Health and so a practice opened in Montville, followed by one more in Maleny. owner and physiotherapist Russell, said he is incredibly grateful to the Range community for supporting him and the other therapists.

on New Year’s day Maleny lost one of its treasured icons – Len Lowe – a gentleman and a sporting icon.

i was recently on a day trip to Maleny and was given a december copy of your Hinterland Times newspaper. i found the article on Neville Ross very interesting as my wife and i were members of the Forest Hill Methodist Church when Neville was appointed to the Laidley Circuit in 1957.

Len was noted for his contribution to so many organisations in the Maleny district. Recognition of this was the attendance of over 700 of his friends at his funeral on January 9. As one of nature’s gentlemen and family man he excelled. His sporting prowess encompassed the 1960’s through to the 1990’s. Len was one of the best cricketer’s and tennis players in south-east Queensland.

i have vivid memories of the 1959 flood and of helping Neville and esme hose the mud from their house, the church and the hall.

As a tennis player Len dominated the district as champion for almost a decade from 1969 to 1977. Glen Bryce interrupted the up and coming champion's run of

Catering for the event was carried out by the ladies of Maleny Lodge creating a surplus of $350, from donations, plus HHP ’s contribution, so we were able to donate to Blackall RangeCare a sum of $700.

Gnawing dust trails, chomp lean rails, Where once hung feet, long bullock flails, Dry drover’s quips of good times gone, Minus blue melancholic song.

Cracks in the land gape up to a cloudless sky While the farming family search the horizon expressing a waning yet slightly optimistic sigh Contemplating the next indignity to be rendered by this never ending dry.

Six years since rain pelted down on corrugated iron rooves, Livestock yet to feel the squelch of mud underneath their brittle hooves, Nine Mile Creek now etching out a barren, gaping groove.

The cawing crows hover assuming the shape of a black deadly shroud Deciding which carcass will see their fill.

The staunch and resilient family rally around to the all familiar drill of ending the wretched lives of drought affected stock.

Even the children have learned how to kill.

Father leaves the property to supplement the dwindling bank account.

Mother in the pioneering spirit makes do with a meagre amount.

Children forego their precious education After all the need to survive far outweighs the need to learn to count.

When asked by an urban reporter visiting for a day “Do you ever think of giving it all away?”

Who are these heroes dressed in yellow to go These men and women, all locals, you know A rural fire service, well trained for the fight Attacking for days, so little sleep at night.

Facing the Silence

Bushfire Appeal Concert Hosted by local poet and storyteller irish Joe Lynch, and backed by Maleny RsL club, the Bushfire Appeal Concert on Friday February 7 is promising to be a memorable night of entertainment.

Born out of the helplessness everyone is feeling at the widespread bushfire scourge that has wreaked havoc on our nation in recent times, Joe decided to organize a fundraising night, featuring acts like rock legend Kevin Borich, Kelly Cork and more.

Joe’s recently released book of poetry and art will be officially launched on the night with all proceeds going to the appeal. there will be no cover charge, donations only. Local firefighters and ses will make an appearance.

Be early to ensure seating. Meals are available, doors open at 6pm.

Tribal Connection exhibition

Tribal Connection will showcase ten of artist tina Cooper’s best Goddess Bottles that have been stored from when tina was in the middle of working in collaboration with indigenous artists, and feeling the females from the tribes around the world often suffered suppression of spirit. tina’s partner, artist Wolfgang engel, has taken up the challenge in creating a stunning body of work for this exhibition. George McArdle was the bass player in the highly acclaimed Little River Band (LRB) from 1976 to 1979 - the first Australian group to make the top ten charts in the united states, achieving gold status.

George came from a violent, abusive background and eventually he dived headlong into alcohol, fighting, theft, spiritualism and rock music.

While a member of LRB, he underwent a profound spiritual conversion to Christianity and chose to leave the band. “it’s not satisfying being a celebrity,” George confessed. “to carry on the way i was, was not an option.”

Edith Cavell: Facing the Silence is the true account of a courageous British nurse who was executed by the Germans for helping more than 200 Allied soldiers escape from occupied Belgium in the First World War. director Glenda Campi, who last year directed the sellout success Diary of Anne Frank, will be presenting this historical story in a modern and creative way, making use of digital projection and narratives.

LeAN uP AustRALiA dAY is coming! event organiser, Leigh Martinuzzi from AmberWerchon Property, as well as a number of locals, Palmwoods scout Group, Palmwoods Warriors soccer Club, Homegrown Cafe and Palmwoods Community and Business Association are working together on a local clean up day for Palmwoods. in conjunction with the National Clean up Australia day, it will be held on sunday March 1, 8am-10am.

Organic Matters

I

t MAY Be A surprise to your good selves, but it is a little known chapter of english history that before the immortal bard shakespeare took up the pen to write his now famous plays, he was actually a Bush Regenerator working on restoring the once extensive woodlands of middle england.

When not out practicing sound ecological weed management to enable the recruitment of the native woodland, he was busy planting trees in the Commons that had been deserted by the Black death.

Not surprisingly he was a firm advocate of applying deep mulch to improve soil and increase tree growth and long before his play-writing days he was known for his insight and passion for the use of organic matter in ecological restoration and famous for such phrases as “to mulch or not to mulch that is the question” or “some mulch, some mulch, my kingdom for some mulch”... it’s also a little known fact that shakespeare actually drew his name from his profession (as many did in the Middle Ages), it relates to his innovative technique of removing the highly invasive eurasian Pear through a technique of shaking the saplings loose, hence shakes – pear!

Now before you ask, the above is fiction (you’d be surprised) although it could contain some grains of truth... What cannot

be argued however is the importance of the use of organic matter in revegetation.

Most soils we decide to plant on are in some way degraded and by adding deep mulch around your newly planted tree, or even better still mulching months in advance of your planting will increase the health and vigour of your plantings and reduce weed problems in the early phases of revegetation. if you had the time, energy and available finances you could do far worse than surrounding each tree you plant with a whole bale of mulch!

But if we settle for a quarter to a fifth of a bale per plant you’ll be doing well. As a general rule, mulch depth should be ideally between 100-200mm and don’t pile mulch against the trunk of the tree.

What we often fail to take into account when planting native vegetation is the soil. We must recognise that trees are just a part of a very complex forest ecosystem that relies on nutrient cycling between vegetation, fungi, fauna and soils, and that increasing organic matter in the early stages will accelerate the organic feedback loop of mulch, tree, growth, leaf fall, mulch.... that will turn the tubestock you plant today into the towering tree of tomorrow - figuratively speaking, maybe give it a decade or century or so!

Marcus and sharon made a dramatic tree change, (flower change?) four years ago, from life in the building industry, armed with little more than a love of gardening and enthusiasm. they transformed a run down Palmwoods property into a successful family business, growing chemical-free edible flowers, sprouts and microgreens.

HANK GoodNess for the recent rain in our area, some decidedly heavy.

Recorded amounts varied but tanks were replenished at least for the remainder of the summer. unfortunately, it’s time to note losses and reassess what will in fact survive both heat and drought when water is scarce.

Most established trees appeared to survive but some apparently drought-hardy, but shallow-rooted shrubs succumbed to heatwave conditions on top of water stress. there has been some discussion in the media of the advantages of low water use succulents. these are many and varied, some with interesting leaf shapes and others, such as Kalanchoe, with colourful flowers.

All are very, very easy to propagate from leaves, stem sections or in other words, vegetative parts. some will drop leaves on the ground, and these will proceed to grow roots and form new plants. it is therefore very important not to put these sections in the compost, and never of

Brachychiton acerifolius course dump them in the environment. Put them in a bag and consign them to the household bin for disposal. Most of us will grow a few, usually in pots on the deck, but keep an eye on their sneaky behaviour and collect fallen bits for safe disposal.

Very few locally native succulents are readily available. Coastal Pigface, Carpobrotus glaucescens, often seen on

sand dunes, is adapted to coastal gardens. semi-succulent Peperomia can form clumps on boulders and moist rock faces, often in association with ferns. it adapts well to pot culture. Keep moist in a shaded situation.there are others but they may not be adapted to our humid sub-tropical climate.

Moving beyond the garden, Flame tree, Brachychiton acerifolius, grows right along Australia’s east coast and is known for its drought tolerance. the tree’s masses of bright red flowers were really noticeable this summer.

When planning your next revegetation project, look for similarly drought- and heat-tolerant species. it will be worth waiting until soil moisture levels extend well beyond the topsoil and summer is over. Plenty of time to get organised and have mulch materials on hand. Heat wave conditions will eventually depart.

Summer visitors why do they come?

iRds tHAt Visit Australia during our summer, are not always what they seem. some are summer visitors in the pure sense. they come to breed here and to return, in autumn, to their winter homes in Papua New Guinea and indonesia. one example is the Koel, the ‘coo-ee’ bird, a noisy (to some people, maddening) cuckoo whose calls continually remind us of its presence, day and night. A fairly good way to actually see the beak behind the voice, is to listen for the call from a large, open-grown tree in a garden or parkland. Walk quietly under the tree and look upwards.

Another, is the dollarbird. solid-looking, dusky blue, it

sallies off overhead wires to snatch large flying insects and, when displaying, performs dramatic aerial displays of dives, rolls and loop-looping. this confirms it as Australia’s only member of the Roller family and advertises the round, silvery-blue wing spots (“silver dollars”) that give the bird its name. some other birds that arrive for the summer, are actually wintering. it’s a paradox. these are northern hemisphere breeders that come here to escape the north’s cold months when food is scarcer. our swifts are in this group.

Fork-tailed and Needle-tailed species come down from north-east Asia. they have mysterious lives. their feet are small and different to other birds’, with all toes forwardfacing. they are unable to perch in the normal way and can only cling to vertical surfaces. Nature, however, is always adaptable. there is evidence that they bathe in flight by dragging their lower bodies through the water’s surface. they will drink at the same time; and whether or not they sleep on the wing, continues to split opinion. in fine weather, swifts fly so high they may be barely visible to the naked eye. But even at those great heights, they are feeding on flying insects. it’s another world up there. Rain and humidity force their insect prey down and so they follow. With loud swooshes of wings, they appear enigmatically below the thunder clouds.

A noticeable thing that summer migration does is to swell our local resident populations with their northern cousins. We have our own breeding population of Little terns. You can, with practise, distinguish them from commoner species, by their small size, light, elegant flight and frequent hovering. if they have yellow bills with black tips, they are our birds in breeding mode. However, if they have plain black bills, they are probably Asian visitors in what is, for them, winter plumage.

And then there are those birds who arrive somewhere because it has rained – and those whose movements gradually filter them away from drought, leaving us with less to see and listen to for a while. soon it will all change. the Koel’s voice will be silenced, simply because, by April, it will be gone; and the swifts will have returned to breed in the taiga forest of Manchuria and neighbouring areas.

What is here? When is it here? Why is it here? the Australian bird migration scene isn’t simple. its study is many-layered. it is intriguing.

s i PRediCted, the first good storm of the year has resulted in quite a lot of tree damage. this prediction was possible because i have spent the last 25 years observing the interaction between trees and weather events on the Blackall Range. What i have observed is that after a prolonged dry spell, the first storm always brings trees down. the same line up of repeat offenders has not failed to disappoint, with eucalypts and Cypress leading the pack of species that failed, followed by Leopard trees and Liquidambars. it makes a lot of sense to have any threatening trees dealt with before the storms arrive, as i have also observed that even poorly pruned trees fare better than trees that have not been reduced at all. this time a number of very large, mature figs, Ficus sp., whilst not failing completely, lost massive sections, due ultimately to the presence of a harmful fungus. it should be noted that while it is tempting to blame the fungus, not one of the failures of any of the species, was without predisposing stress factors, namely adverse impacts on the root zone. the Root Zone is precious, people! in one case we had to employ the largest mobile crane on the sunshine coast in the clean up. exciting stuff, but Follow please don’t let this be you. tthattree’ ou ‘ab Touch a tree. gram, & sta In on Tony Wootton Tree Surgeon on Mobile: 0403 467 664 Facebook

He BeGiNNiNG of the year has left people floundering against the Wendy Rosenfeldt ravages of the fires and even if we are not affected directly we all know someone who has, or feel for the people we hear about that have lost loved ones, their homes or their livelihood. tragic situations often bring a wave of support from the community and there are numerous ways to donate to people who have been hurt by natural disasters. this is not only good for the people who are suffering, it is actually a positive thing for the people providing the relief.

Whether it is on a personal level or something that affects the whole community; the way through challenging times is to do your dharma. dharma can be loosely translated as duty but encompasses more than that. it is the way to live that is most evolutionary. Acting in accord with one’s dharma strengthens the link between individual life and the cosmic force of evolution.

Your personal dharma could be your career and that will be unique to you. if your dharma is to be a teacher you will find fulfilment in it, where as if it is not and you are just doing it as a job you may feel stagnant and frustrated by the challenges it brings.

Your dharma may be to be a parent, or a carer for someone, it could be being a musician or a gardener. When you are in

your dharma you feel fulfilled. it can take you out of whatever else is going on in your life and make you feel uplifted. even on a simple level if you are feeling depressed or sorry for yourself and you do something to help someone else you automatically feel better than if you sit around dwelling on your woes. on a deeper level our dharma is to live completely in tune with everything else in the universe. this is not possible by trying to live by analysing the effects of all our actions and we would only give ourselves a headache trying. it is only possible when our awareness is open to that level of life where we are unified. then we experience everything as a wave of our self. in the same way we don’t have to remind our hands that they are a part of our self, we don’t have to think about how to behave in relation to everything in our environment. it becomes as intimate to us as our hand is to our body.

Regularly transcending wakes up this connection and allows us to live more in the moment and less in the head, our individual actions gain more support from the universe and a greater sense of connection with everything around us develops spontaneously.

The importance of balanced nutrition

NdeRstANdiNG tHe impact of nutrition on our health and well-being is something that needs to be approached with careful consideration.

For example, the fact that our emotions and the thoughts we think affect our body chemistry almost as much as the things we eat and drink. if we take the time to honestly reflect how we felt energetically when our emotions or stress levels were out of balance and how that then affected our health we would make our first priority be that we do whatever is needed to help us recreate emotional balance where possible. to just bump up the nutritional status of the body without dealing with underlying issues is often a recipe for future problems.

Taurine is an amino acid that is generally found in sea food and meat products. A simple amino acid blood test can tell you what your levels are. it’s often added to sports drinks because it can boost energy levels, though because of the other additives in the drinks this isn't a good way to boost your electrolyte levels. taurine intake has been found to be associated with longevity and to protect against cardiovascular health problems. Current research also shows that taurine protects eye health and supports liver function.

Milestone celebration ten years ago a small group of people gathered for their first meeting as Church on the Rise in Maleny. during those years the church has become a familiar face in Maleny, participating in Christmas street carnivals, easter programs, services at erowal, delivering food parcels to needy people and supporting chaplaincy in our schools.

Montville History Group This month, the Montville History Group will publish its first book in over a decade; sawdust and steam. It has also committed to writing the history of the 25 years of Montville School since its centenary in 1996, plus write the history of three blocks of land at the end of Flaxton Mill Road by their new owners.

The History Group meets in Razorback House in the Montville School grounds opposite Carpenter’s Place.

Its next meeting is on Tuesday February 11 from 10 to 11am. This meeting will be followed by a meeting with the school principal, Adam Montgomery, to begin planning the 25-year school history.

National Adoption Day on saturday February 15, 10am – 2pm, Petstock stores across the country will play host to pet rescue organisations as part of its sixth annual National Pet Adoption day (NPAd), led by their charity Petstock Assist and leading not-for-profit organisation PetRescue. the initiative urges would-be pet owners to think more responsibly about pet ownership by reconsidering their buying options to help break the cycle of pet homelessness.

All pets available for adoption receive up-to-date vaccines, are desexed and have undergone a full health assessment.

Pet adoption experts from local rescue groups will also be in attendance to answer any questions and assist with the adoption process.

Sunshine Coast Choral Society Sunshine Coast Choral Society commences its 2020 rehearsals on Wednesday February 5 at 7pm.

Rehearsals are held at Lakeside Community Centre, 1 Lakeshore Avenue, North Buderim.

Nambour hits a high note The Nambour CBD live music scene will be dancing to a new beat after Sunshine Coast Council designated the area a special entertainment precinct.

The designation will help provide better protection for entertainment venues and clear and consistent guidelines for new developments.

Entertainment venues within special entertainment precincts are exempt from the amplified music noise requirements of the Queensland Government’s liquor licensing laws. The regulation responsibilities for amplified music noise are transferred to Council.

Nambour has had many successful events such as Currie Street Crawl, NamJam, Tramfest and the Horizon Festival, so this designation will be an added bonus in bringing live music and entertainment to the area.

How active should you be? the Centers for disease Control and Prevention recommend that adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity every week.

Benefits to all parts of your body Research shows that every single system in the body benefits when you are more active. Bottom line: if you want to live a long and healthy life, you need to be active.

You don't need to buy expensive equipment or join a gym. And you will begin to reap the rewards of physical activity almost as soon as you start. Adding small amounts of movement to your daily routine goes a long way.

Brisk walking, at a pace of at least a 20-minute mile, provides health benefits similar to running, and probably more social benefits. Plus, your risk of injury is much lower. if you aren't yet ready to aim for 2.5 hours of brisk walking each week, reducing the time you spend sitting would be a great starting goal. one of the best ways to keep up with your efforts is to track your progress. You can do it with pen and paper, in a journal, or in one of many smartphone apps. As you see yourself making progress, it can be easier to keep up the routine.

As you undertake the big change from being inactive to becoming active, understand that setbacks happen. don't let one slip-up derail your whole goal. When possible, have a backup plan to deal with barriers like weather or time constraints.

s i PAss uNdeR the graceful brick archway, resplendently lit with rows of yellow light bulbs theatrically announcing ‘tivoli’, i am greeted by an avenue exploding with colour in a most curious mix of red hanging baskets and tiered street lamps – all fringed with red, orange and yellow lights.

Welcome to the tivoli Gardens, Copenhagen – one of the most magical places on earth!

Above: Waterside 40 years ago i fell in love with the restaurant and tivoli Gardens and in 2019, nothing willows, Tivoli had changed – it was just like Gardens, pressing the ‘refresh screen’ button Copenhagen and presto, i was back in that bewitching atmosphere, scattered Right: Thieves with amusements, rides, restaurants sneaking into the and surrounded by stunning ‘Speak Easy’ gardens.

Landscaped with all kinds of wondrous statues, fountains and mythical creatures, many inspired by the fairy tales of danish writer Hans Christian Andersen, the tivoli Gardens teased my imagination with an assortment of mesmerising adventures around every twist and turn. And judging by the number of happy squeals coming from children, i was not alone.

Passing a time-machine ride, a peculiar array of time capsules tumbling around a slanted platform like up-ended dodgem cars, i found myself enticed down a dark and mysterious alleyway adorned by caricature thieves sneaking into the ‘speak easy’. stepping to the beat of the music belting out from the rides, i then passed under a row of carousel horses rearing up in an astonished protest as if they were in a Parisienne chorus line. totally captivated, i continued to explore, finding miniature hot air balloons in disguise as the ferris wheel only to turn a corner and discover the The Flying Suitcase and its hapless pilot hovering overhead, oblivious to the throng of enchanted visitors milling about below.

After working up an appetite, i headed to one of the many restaurants serving traditional danish fare – cheese being my

favoured dish, appropriately washed down with an icy cold Pilsener.

After lunch, an afternoon thunderstorm did nothing to dampen my spirits as i sought shelter in Cakenhagen – a boutique cake shop where all the artisan pastries were served with champagne.

As the last rays of sunlight faded, i made myself comfortable in a striped canvas deck chair, surrounded by rose beds, and settled in to listen to the band playing in the concert shell. i could happily turn into a pixie and live in the tivoli Gardens forever. Running to a new

dawn 'Run In Her Shoes' is a quest to share light with young mothers on the Sunshine Coast.

HeRe HAVe BeeN times in our lives that we've felt deep darkness and hopelessness. Many are fortunate to have wonderful friends and family that shared their light and love and helped guide us back into the light.

But for some women and mothers, reaching out to someone close may not be possible. so now it's our turn to support others. together, a group of four women from Mapleton, Lacey, Acacia, Jade and Helen, will do continuous laps of a 3.5km obstacle course in the dark! “our goal is to finish approximately 200km during the night and raise $4000 to make positive changes in the lives of women right here on the sunshine Coast,” shared Acacia.

All funds raised will be donated to Lily House – a wonderful organisation that supports mothers and women in crisis.

Lacey said, “this undertaking is about confidently going forwards into the dark together and fighting our way constantly forwards until we see the sky change colour and celebrate together as the new day dawns.”

Lacey, Acacia, Jade and Helen are on a mission to fight their way through the night to raise funds and support for Lily House who help support, guide and care for young mothers on the Sunshine Coast

Jade continued, “We can do far more than we realise, yet at the times where even taking the next step seems impossible, it is the stories of strength and courage through hardships faced that give us the confidence to carry on.”

Cott MoRRisoN is NotHiNG if not a marketeer. or, to put it more precisely, he is nothing except a marketeer.

His sole area of expertise consists in convincing the gullible to buy stuff they don’t need and generally don’t want and his success can be measured by the extent that he can persuade them that they can’t do without it.

His triumph. of course, was the 2019 election, in which a relentless campaign of spin revolving around the two great motivators of greed and fear overwhelmed any serious debate over policy.

And for this he became something of a demigod to his troops, who had been resigned to the idea that their manifest divisions and incompetence were finally ready to catch up with them. if substance could be abandoned and bluster enshrined, it would save them a lot of trouble – when problems multiply and the situation becomes hopeless, just unleash the master marketeer He will have a quick word to the powers above and produce another miracle. it sounds all very convenient, but there is a catch: Morrison is not actually invincible, even within the narrow parameters he prefers. His marketing record is, to say the least, patchy.

He was ignominiously tossed out of the prize gig of tourism NsW, and while he has rehabilitated himself within the less demanding environment of the Liberal Party, this has led to instances of hubris and impulsiveness. in particular, he has a tendency to over egg expectations – or if he doesn’t, those around him are always keen to do it for him.

His immediate staff seem to have taken up ideas way above their station – it sometimes appears that they see him as more of a puppet than a prime minister, a useful logo to be deployed as a sort of ersatz messiah to neutralise crises in the belief that what worked two years ago can be repeated at will.

Fine if it works. But if it doesn’t – if the expectations cannot be matched – there is a risk not only of disillusionment among the electorate, but a mounting anger and

resentment that they have been conned. And if it happened once, perhaps it also happened in the past and can be anticipated in the future.

Which brings us to last week’s National Press Club address. in the days preceding it, the battalion of boosters belched forth a barrage of ballyhoo. this was to be the prime minister’s first major speech of the year, the one that fixed the agenda for 2020 and beyond. it would be a complete reset, the prelude for initiative, innovation and action on a scale seldom envisaged in Australian politics.

Why, there was a rumour (clearly deliberately leaked) that climate change was in the recipe; that our woefully inadequate Paris accord targets were to be ramped up to more credible levels. there was even a suggestion that some form of carbon tax could be on the table. that one had to be hosed down quickly and decisively, before the compost in the party room burst into spontaneous combustion.

But still, the optimists hoped that at last something might be offered other than bluff and bluster. However, the hope was, as so often, extinguished by the pitiful reality. the first half of Morrison’s lecture was pure self congratulation, a list of his government’s so-called achievements over the last twelve months. then we indeed moved on to dealing with climate change – but not really. the key words were adaptation and resilience – we just needed to adapt and resile like buggery, and all would be well.

As for emissions reductions – the usual evasions, denials and procrastinations. We are only 1.3 percent, we are doing our bit, will meet and beat our pathetic promises, we won’t destroy our economy, if we don’t flog fossil fuels some other bastard will, it’s our coal and we will bloody well do what we like with it so those interfering foreigners can shut up and piss off.

But there had to be what is delicately described as an announceable – so Generalissimo scoMo was going to ring in legislation allowing him to declare a state of emergency, not the kind the British did to actually confront climate change, but to pretend that he is doing something when the

continuing and worsening disasters stemming from it emerge in the near future. He wants to be able to send in the troops. okay, that sounds like action: but when and how – and also why and what? Will his emergency include conscription, rationing, censorship, night time blackouts with the populace sent to the shelters?

Presumably not; in almost the next breath Morrison averred that he was a federalist, meaning that the states would be consulted (which they have not always been during the present disaster) and that in spite of the emergency, it would be essentially business as usual, his constantly reassuring slogan as things go to hell in a handbasket.

But this will not work, because Morrison, unwillingly and reluctantly, has been forced to assume a leadership role: having talked up an emergency, and involved the armed forces on a continuing stand-by basis, he has effectively abandoned his old line about the states being the ones with the responsibility. the public never bought it; as the catastrophe mounted across borders and the news dragged on, worse every day, even the quietest Australians could recognise a national issue when they saw one. they expect, demand, that their prime minister will do the same and will take charge. so Morrison has to try, even though his immediate response has been, to put it mildly, underwhelming.

But even the long-winded and half-arsed speech last week has raised expectations; don’t you worry, the government has your back, we will get things back under control. But what if we can’t? What if the nostrums offered so far prove to be too little and too late? this fire season is far from over, and there are two more to confront before the next election. We can all hope that they will not be as frightful as the current one, but they are unlikely to be totally innocuous.

And next time there will be nowhere to hide: Morrison, having been dragged to a leadership role which he did not want, now owns it.

He has already been politically charred; and it will be much harder for him to market his way out of the next crisis.

But given that he has no other skills, marketing is his only hope.
