elcome to January 2026. And I hope with all my heart it is filled with healing, kindness and burgeoning creative enterprises and events!

Traditionally, there seems to be a lull in January, while everyone settles in to the new year and plans their work, their productions, their exhibitions and gigs.

It’s a good time to reset and assess – make sure you are travelling on the mental and physical path best suited to you.

Our wellbeing experts, Jamie Milne and Kerrie Friend, on page 21, always offer valuable suggestions for our mental and emotional health, often with practical ways to improve a situation, or even give our lives an overhaul.

Their columns this month I found particularly helpful. I especially love the advice from Jamie when you feel anxious: “Tell yourself ‘be where my feet are’, press your toes into the ground 6-10 times - this puts you in the moment, not in the anxious future, or the scary miserable past”.

For up-to-date information and links to key emergency services in one location, stay informed with Sunshine Coast Council’s Disaster Hub (disasterhub.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/#Dashboard).

The Disaster Hub includes weather and beach condition warnings, road closures, airport updates, traffic cameras, flood mapping and current warnings.

Mayor Natoli said storms could bring with them the risk of losing power and flash flooding.

“Make sure you have everything you and your family may need in case you lose power or are cut off by flood water or fallen trees. Always check the Disaster Hub before, during and after a storm before heading out.

“This summer the BOM is warning we will experience higher humidity and temperatures with warmer nights,” Mayor Natoli continued.

“Be sun smart by wearing a hat, sunscreen and light, loose clothing, as well as drinking lots of water - at least six glasses a day.

chools out for summer, the sun’s out - the surf’s up - the holiday fun has begun!” said Sunshine Coast Mayor Rosanna Natoli, as she joined Surf Life Saving Queensland’s Aaron Purchase, at the Mooloolaba Surf Life Saving Club.

It’s important that visitors and locals stay alert and safe at the beach and in the surf - always swim between the red and yellow flags!

Summer holidays on the Sunshine Coast and Hinterland are the best. Glorious beaches, bush walks with mellifluous and dramatic birdsong to accompany you, sub-tropical rainforests which smell glorious and cocoon you in cool shade, waterholes and waterfalls for a refreshing swim – we really do live in paradise.

But Queensland’s sub-tropical summer also can bring with it wild, stormy afternoons.

It’s also important that our homes across the coast and hinterland are protected too.

“The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting heatwaves and above-average rainfall this season,” said Mayor Natoli.

Summer storms and heatwaves are part of life here, but planning for them helps keep you, your family and your property safe.

“If you’re new to the Coast, or visiting, you might not know what to expect when the sky starts rumbling. As locals we’re used to our storm season - we’ve already had

“Flooding can take you by surprise, making some roads too dangerous to use. Remember your car can’t protect you.

“A small amount of floodwater is all it takes for your engine and electrics to fail. Stay off the roads and consider if travel is necessary.

“Have fun this summer but stay safe, too.”

Creative Companions The Sunshine Coast Hinterland is known for being a source of artistic talent and creativity. In beautiful Yandina, it abounds.

Some of the local talent celebrate their shared love of art through The Yandina Art Group.

he Yandina Art Group meets at the Yandina CWA Hall on Stevens Street, where they create exquisite pieces of art together.

One of the members, Shirley Almeta Lennon, had one of her paintings chosen by the public as the ‘best work’ at their recent exhibition at Pomona Railway Station Gallery - a captivating local, community-run gallery on Station Street in Pomona.

“I was thrilled to receive the People’s Choice award at Pomona,” says Almeta.

“Not just to receive the award, but to know that my work appeals to the public. To me, that makes it all worthwhile, because that's what this series of paintings is all about.

“I want to make people smile when they look at it.

I want them to imagine the story behind the painting. I want them to enjoy the colour, and to go home remembering the work.”

Almeta’s art journey began in Year Four in primary school when she won an award in the local area art exhibition, which was held at Rockdale Town Hall.

“By the second year of high school, I used to draw my friends’ portraits during library classes. Then, as a young mum, living in country Singleton in NSW, I began to learn porcelain art and after a year, taught for the next eight years.

“When friends would come to visit, the first thing they would ask was, could they visit the ‘graveyard’ and they’d inevitably walk out with something to keep. Now I see those graveyard pieces and wish I’d signed them!”

When her family moved again, this time to Orange, she changed to another art form. “I began fabric painting and this was during the bicentennial year and so lots of T-shirts with koalas, emus, cockatoos.”

Next it was watercolours. “This whetted my real art appetite,” she says. “I used to paint, sitting on the floor of our TV room, for want of a better place, and was lucky enough to sell all that I did.”

As happens to many people in creative pursuits for a period of time, life got in the way of her art until 2008, when they moved to the Sunshine Coast from Sydney.

“I used to sell it via the local gift shop and those pieces that I didn’t consider worthy of signing or selling, I would keep in my ‘graveyard,’ Almeta remembers.

“By accident, my sister’s landlady helped me cut out a dress pattern and so, to thank her, I did a painting of some frogs for her. That set off a chain reaction leading to several more paintings for family and friends. Eventually, I bought a canvas. This was the beginning for me.”

Almeta says art is important to our lives and in our communities.

“I believe that art can speak to the human soul in a way that words alone cannot. Historically, it existed before writing, and connects folk across nations, generation and beliefs, and speaks to the individuals' emotions.

“To me, it captures life itself and invites everyone, no matter one's academic ability, to pause, reflect and feel.

“Art, in any of its forms, can reflect the nature of the region, can involve all age groups to participate, and is not defined by its perceived excellence by judges. Art is 'judged' by the viewer and reaches out to the viewer.

“Yandina, like many of our smaller communities, has an

interesting history and scenery, and is inspiring for those artists who enjoy landscapes and plein air painting.”

Art is known to rouse art, and Almeta shares some of her personal inspiration.

“I am a real fan of Richard Schmidt. He is an oil painter whose work looks so loose but has all the detail that is necessary. I get frustrated when I look at his work because he makes it look incredibly easy, yet it covers all bases.

“Often just a face with abstraction around it, or just wild brushstrokes. Too easy, you say? I haven't managed it yet!” she says with a wry smile. Yandina Art Group member and artist Lorraine Orchard with her painting of a plane

“There are a few current Sunshine Coast artists whose work I admire and have been inspired by, two of whom are Bronwyn Barton, a semi-abstract artist, and Cheryl McGannon, a cold wax hinterland artist.”

Almeta admits the Yandina Art Group has been a wonderful addition to her art life.

“We begin each week with a delicious lunch supplied by each of us to share and then chat away while we paint. We have a couple of luncheons at local venues during the year which include our respective spouses.

“The folk are genuinely interested in each other and ready to assist each other in their private situations whenever necessary. Art is friendship, joy, sharing and caring.”

The group began about eight years ago and has a current membership of ten accomplished artists. It was initiated by John N Mason, who was a finalist in this year's Brisbane Rotary Art Exhibition.

John started Yandina Art Group as he envisioned a group of artists who would enjoy painting together and sharing their techniques.

DEFAMATION –A SHORT INTRODUCTION Defamation concerns the public communication of words, gestures, images or acts that are likely to lower the esteem of the person to whom such communication is targeted. The Queensland Defamation Act of 2005 applies to defamatory information published on or after 1 January 2006.

For a message to be defamatory it must be communicated in some way and the Act has defined such methods of communicating as: Ÿ an ar ticle, repor t, adver tisement etc. communicated by a newspaper, magazine or other periodical; Ÿ a program, repor t, adver tisement etc. communicated by television, radio, internet or other forms of electronic communication; Ÿ a letter, note or other writing; Ÿ a picture, gesture or verbal utterance; and Ÿ any other material or means by which something may be communicated to a person.

The message is deemed to be defamatory if it: Ÿ lowers the concerned person’ reputation; Ÿ leads others to think less of that person; Ÿ makes others shun or avoid that person; and Ÿ cause others to ridicule, hate or despise them.

There are several distinct defences to an action for defamation which are all noted in the Act and some of these are: Ÿ Justification - the truth alone is the defence here; Ÿ Absolute privilege - this defence is available when one can prove that the document was published on an occasion of absolute privilege such as parliamentary matters and publications; Ÿ Public documents - this defence is available if the publication is from a public document and the information was published honestly for the advancement of education or for informing the public ; Ÿ Qualified privilege - if the recipient of the defamatory matter has an interest in the information contained in the publication such as a scenario where the information was published in the course of giving that information to that person; Ÿ Honest opinion - if the publication expresses an opinion that is honestly held by the author as opposed to a statement of fact and the opinion was based on proper material that is substantially true; Ÿ Triviality - where the aggrieved person is unlikely to suffer any harm.

It is also worth noting that an apology made to an aggrieved person will not constitute an admission of fault or liability.

Despite the unsettled times, Joe Witton, his wife Gertrude and young daughter had boarded the Roscommon in London for the two-month voyage determined to settle in Australia and become dairy farmers.

With about 20 acres felled and grassed for grazing and ten acres cleared for an orchard, the property promised lush feed for cattle, high yielding citrus, and the rich volcanic soil would grow healthy crops. It boasted a well and springs in the gullies with two tanks for water storage.

The high set home had four rooms and a verandah all around with its local timber boards and iron roof cladding was a very different house from their stone cottage at Winfarthing South in the North district of Norfolk.

When Connie started school in 1916 she had a twomile walk from her place along what is now Balmoral Road. Her best friend was Jean Muirhead, a year younger.

Winning a scholarship meant Connie could study teaching. She became a Junior Teacher at Kelvin Grove Girls and Infants State School in 1929 where she worked for six years. By 1933 she had gained her two-year teacher training and been promoted.

This was the same year that Connie met her ‘tall, dark and handsome’ – Roy Greenham, an ambitious young 25-year-old. The couple became engaged, with Connie prepared to resign from teaching and support Roy’s aspirations to gain his science degree.

Always a popular friend and teacher, Connie was treated to a farewell lunch by her fellow staff in Brisbane.

At Montville, her friends entertained Connie at several pre-wedding afternoon teas and hosted a social afternoon for her at the Montville School of Arts in April, 1935.

In addition, her mother hosted two dozen friends to show off Connie’s trousseau as the wedding promised to be quite the social event for Montville.

The wedding was held in Montville at St Mary’s Church of England, with the Reverend Spencer-Booth officiating and Mr. Herbert Coulter at

Connie chose two bridesmaids; her friend Jessie Stevenson and Maisie Greenham, Roy’s sister. They both wore a chalk-blue gown slashed with silver lame. Their headdresses, held with halos of forget-me-nots, were of stiffened tulle,

and they carried cherry-pink gladioli. Frederick Whyatt and Leslie Greenham were groomsmen.

The reception was held at the Manjalda Guest House at Montville, a practical choice as it was just a short walk from the School of Arts and offered magnificent views, as does the current Mayfair Complex now located on that site. The couple enjoyed a brief honeymoon at Alexandra Headlands.

In the following years when work for the AngloIranian Oil Company took Roy overseas to Persia, the United States and New Guinea, Connie came to Montville and stayed with her parents.

Even through the war years when Roy became a Captain with the RAAF flying Avro Ansons, Connie visited her parents and friends in Montville.

Connie died at her St Lucia home aged 92 in 2003. Although she had no siblings and no children, we have a photo of a fair-haired girl from 1915 and snippets from newspapers to piece together a whole life from just that one moment in time.

n 1922, many women and communities faced the realities of living in isolated and remote communities across Queensland. Ruth Beatrice Fairfax decided to make a difference. She became president of, and began building, an organisation in Queensland that, through her passion and dedication, grew to 283 branches and 13,000 by 1928, the Queensland Country Women’s Association (QCWA).

“QCWA provides support and friendship for women of all ages in all areas of the state, rural and city. Handcraft, cookery, photography, international study are a few of the many activities. We lobby to improve conditions for women and their families.” - states the QCWA website.

A visit to any QCWA branch meeting is the chance to witness this in person, where there are also inspirational members like Sharon Tilly who is the Wishlist Coordinator for QCWA Nambour North Coast Division Project.

“She is a very hard-working lady for Wishlist,” says Wendy Bebbington OAM, President, Nambour North Coast Division.

Another member was also recognised, “Georgea Rule, Division Dressmaking Convenor, also received a Cultivating Kindness Award for her work involved with the members in the Workshops for Dressmaking,” says Wendy.

Lynda Tomkins, owner of Crochet Australia, was the first president of the Yandina Branch of the QCWA and says it was her mum’s love of the CWA that drew her to seek out a branch.

“I’d only been here in Yandina for a year, and I just wanted to get out and meet people. My mum had always been involved when I lived in central Queensland.”

Lynda says the group has a wonderful social aspect to it.

I stopped for a long time as I was in the business corporate world for 25 years, but when my son was born, I remembered that years ago you used to crochet for other people’s babies and I wanted to crochet for my baby. baker, Lynda says, “We have women come along and say, ‘Oh, but I’m not crafty, or I don’t bake scones. But we say, it doesn’t matter. Come for the company. You don’t have to be crafty or bake scones. In fact, most of us don’t! We are more than scones!”

“I retired from work, having been in hospitality in a café in Nambour for years and years. Holly’s was like an institution in Nambour. I’ve got an album of all my customers, some of them have sadly passed away now, but everyone still remembers me around Nambour.

“My husband was president of the Men’s Shed in Nambour at the time, and I went to the Christmas party and one of the women there was a member and she said to come along, that was nine years ago now. I love it.

“I lost my husband just over 12 months ago, so this has been wonderful for me, I needed this. The girls wrap their arms around you whenever anything bad happens.

“I do also love what the QCWA does. If you look back on the history, QCWA has been a driver of some important things, like seatbelts.”

According to the QCWA website the organisation has a proven record of effectiveness when lobbying for change and action, including: improving access to midwifery services; dental care and speech therapy in remote/regional areas; patient transport subsidies; seatbelts fitted on school buses as part of National CWA Network; the introduction of white lines on road shoulders as part of the National CWA Network, and compulsory wearing of seatbelts as part of the National CWA Network, amongst others.

While the QCWA may be best known for the iconic scones and tea they have famously served at the EKKA since 1924; and they are renowned for their exceptional crafts, bakery, jams and preserves, their history is also interwoven in many people’s stories, members’ lives, in caring for so many towns, cities

and communities, and as lobbyers of change and providers of practical support in times of need.

Back to the scones at the EKKA though! They are baked fresh on site, with members said to bake almost 1,000 fresh scones a day. Members come to volunteer from across Southeast Queensland, to keep this wonderful tradition and history alive.

During World War II, the QCWA were pivotal in supporting the war effort, and they held communities together through the Great Depression, devastating droughts, floods and fires.

Wendy Bebbington OAM, President, Nambour North Coast Division says, “The QCWA State Conference is held yearly in the different regions. Our QCWA Nambour North Coast Division is hosting the 2026 State Conference to be held at the Maroochydore RSL, Memorial Avenue.

“We are expecting around 350 members from all over Queensland and will have displays of all competitions, including cookery, floral art, handcraft, knitting and crochet, patchwork and many more.

There is no cost to view the displays.”

Yandina Branch President Jenny Douglas says she found the QCWA through the Yandina Street Fair.

“Once my husband and myself retired, I always wanted to volunteer. I went to the fair and went to the QCWA Hall, had a very beautiful cup of coffee, scones and sangas, at a very reasonable price; then headed out to the crafts and bought a heap of wonderful handmade gifts. I went home and googled the QCWA, and the next thing I joined the Yandina Branch.

“My husband and I support the Smith Family and we both are country raised. This was a perfect match. I

love receiving emails about supporting our community and with our small branch working incredibly hard to raise funds. We are very focussed on women (and children) – it’s a wonderful feeling helping others,” she says.

A misconception is that you have to be retired to join, but Jenny says that isn’t so.

“You don’t have to be retired, we have a number of members who work part-time, with school children. If any female, no matter what age, wishes to volunteer and help others, look no further than the QCWA. Laughs in the Yandina QCWA kitchen

“You don’t need to be skilled in anything but if you are handy with the sewing machine, crochet hook or knitting needle or love to cook – this is the most exquisite way of showing off those talents.

“Or if you are new to the Sunny Coast and are looking for friendship or fun times, everyone is welcome to our coffee catchups, craft days and meetings. Come and have a look, that’s the best way to find out and it’s free.

“We look after funding for school children at the Yandina State School and North Arm School every term. We are involved in “Wishlist”, DV victims and are currently looking into local charities around Yandina.”

ames Frames in Maleny is about to enter its ninth year in business, and owners Gil and Gavin James have lots of new and exciting things planned for 2026.

Gil and Jodi come up with all of the quirky questions and invite patrons to spin the Wheel of Trivia to decide which questions are asked on the night. They also give away plenty of prizes – including a highly-coveted prize for last place.

“We have been blown away by the response and support we’ve received from the people of Maleny and are very proud to have created a community that comes together every couple of weeks for a bit of fun and silliness,” said Jodi.

hrough the evocative power of early photography a new exhibition, On the Heights, invites you to step into the world of Australia’s pioneering mountaineers.

The historical exhibition celebrates the adventurers who transformed climbing into a cultural movement and takes visitors on a visual journey through an extraordinary period in Sunshine Coast history.

Official park signage and webpages usually indicate when mountains hold spiritual and sacred significance for First Nations Peoples, who would prefer people did not climb the summits.

Drawing from archival photographs, newspaper accounts, and personal collections from the early 1900s to 1930s, the free exhibition is curated by climber and historian Michael Meadows.

On the Heights is presented by Landsborough Museum and Bankfoot House Heritage Precinct and is open until March 29.

Among the stories featured are the Clarke Sisters (c.1912), who cycled from New Farm to Bankfoot House for a weekend of climbing, and Bert Armitage Salmon, whose remarkable collection of photographs documents the rise of a social movement in Queensland.

These images, alongside accounts of the Dimes Sisters and others, reveal a time when women found their place on the heights, escaping the limits of conventional society.

Sunshine Coast Council’s Heritage Portfolio Councillor David Law said the exhibition was a meaningful tribute to the region’s history and landscape.

am an ‘average joe’ who enjoys good food, not a food critic by profession, so excuse my lack of fancy terminology! I have not been paid to promote anyone – I am simply sharing my opinion on the hinterland eateries I visit, for their service/ambience and presentation/flavour.

Earlier this year, I noticed a little cafe/ pantry open up on the corner of Little Main Street in Palmwoods.

A perfect spot to sit and watch the world go by and catch the through-breeze. Palmwoods Providore was created to provide local fresh, sustainable produce and products, and the offerings in the chilled cabinet and on the menu looked very inviting.

to detail on the salad won me over - fresh and perfectly balanced, with Julianne sliced pickles, cucumbers, carrot and dill, and a tangy housemade vinaigrette.

It’s a cosy space with a range of veggies, fresh fruit, eggs, sourdough bread, honey, locally roasted coffee and a selection of pantry staples and dry goods. The tables are out front and round the side of the building, all in shade.

My companion had a Mexican Stack, which she said was “absolutely delicious, one of the best meals I’ve had in a long time”.

I must admit we have been twice in the last month and both times we sat out front, which affords a view of the little park, wooden walkway and occasional trains running parallel to the street below. A great spot, although we both agreed the chairs need cushions!

On the second visit, I had a Toasted Veggie Wrap - packed with veggies and extremely filling, and my friend chose the Mixed Fruit Cheesecake Crumble, which she enjoyed but admitted she should’ve asked for some cream or ice-cream to go with it.

I ordered the Roasted Frittata, which was filled with capsicum, pumpkin, onion, and the housemade relish had a depth of flavour which perfectly complemented the meal. The attention

Did you know 2026 is the year of the Horse. Fiery and passionate, it signifies ambition, creativity, and forward movement.

So why not step out and join Maleny Players Play Reading? Held on the last Friday of every month from 9.30am to midday.

Play Reading has been happening in Maleny for many years, organised and run by Players icon Jill Morris.

Last year Pat Lovell (pictured) took over the reins and has cantered along with a variety of plays by new and older playwrights.

The idea is that a play is chosen and whoever turns up is allocated a part or maybe a round robin is used, depending on the number of participants. Next comes the reading from the script - great fun!

Usually there is a break at the end of Act One, time for a cuppa and a chat or discussion before continuing with the rest of the play.

Many past and present participants have continued onto the stage, to direct or to write several of the wonderful productions put on by Maleny Players every year. A welcoming, friendly community theatre.

Eudlo Hall hosts Summer Concerts 2026 – Viva la Cello!

he Sunshine Coast’s favourite summer classical music event is back. Summer Concerts 2026 – Viva la Cello! returns to Eudlo Hall from January 16-18, presenting three intimate and uplifting concerts that celebrate the expressive power, versatility, and sheer beauty of the cello.

Now in its fourth year, this boutique regional concert series brings together exceptional cellists from across Australia and abroad, alongside rising young artists from the acclaimed Summer Intensive Retreat.

Curated by cellist and artistic director Louise King, the series offers audiences a rare opportunity to immerse themselves in bold, joyful, and imaginative cello-centred programming in a warm and welcoming village setting.

Across one vibrant weekend, listeners will experience Folk and Originals - traditional toe-tapping reels,

contemporary Americana bluegrass works, and a headline folk set with festival favourites, Those Folk.

Listeners will also enjoy Baroque and Tango - elegant Baroque gems paired with the fire and pulse of Piazzolla, De Falla, and tango classics, and Classical Cellissimo! international cellists György Déri and Rachel Johnston join Louise King for a thrilling classical finale with the Retreat Cello Choir performing a diverse program including a world premiere.

In my time six million Jews were slaughtered. My parents endured the second World War. They bequeathed us powerful values, including that vile anti-Semitism should never again be allowed to emerge.

Our universities teach “what to think” not “how to think” and safe rooms for Jews are normalised, as are holocaust-denying academics and camp sites for antiSemitic protesters. Hate preachers spew at random, currently unchallenged.

I weep for our Jewish Australians whom we have so deeply betrayed. Armed guards are now essential at Jewish schools, synagogues, cultural centers, shops and gatherings.

School children are denied their uniforms to avoid verbal abuse at our museums and galleries.

Synagogues were defaced and burnt. To attend a major writers festival it appears preferable that you hate Jews. The theatre seems a “no go” zone if you are of Jewish extraction.

Behind Bondi I migrated to Australia as a 19-year-old. The attraction was a society based on Christian values, a level playing field, mate-ship, real opportunity and a fair go. Australia has delivered in spades. I remain deeply grateful.

I was privileged to become a citizen. I truly understood that I had the right to my ethnic and cultural heritage, but only within an obligation to Australian unity.

Gun danger Dear Editor, After the initial shock and trauma of the Bondi Beach shootings, people are asking why the shooters had six high-powered firearms, and why are we being told they were all legally owned?

National Cabinet has unanimously agreed to an overdue revision of gun laws. Recent research shows that there are four million guns in the hands of civilians, and it appears that getting a category A or B licence (which includes high powered shotguns and ‘repeater’ rifles) is not difficult, requiring only a simple assessment as a ‘fit and proper person’ and a reason the shooter ‘needs’ the gun. This can include citing the obscene term ‘recreational hunting’.

Recreational hunting can only be interpreted as killing for fun. The International Handbook of Animal Abuse and Cruelty states that “individuals with a history of animal cruelty were highly likely to be involved in other types of criminal behaviours including, but not limited to, assault, domestic violence and stealing.” Hunting is ineffective in controlling animal numbers while it always involves appalling acts of cruelty. It is not a sport, nor should it be considered entertainment.

The Bondi shooters appear to have trained with 0.308 calibre ammunition, usually used to hunt larger animals. To those who see other humans as unworthy of life, humans (in this case Jewish ones) are just such large animals.

The solution the Commonwealth and State governments should be imposing is to ban all so-called recreational hunting. Tolerating acts of violence towards any animal is a danger to all.

I grow in profusion in tropical terrain, drenched by the regular downpour of rain.

On Burly Griffin Fraser’s crew A stately pleasure dome decreed A place of comfort for their clan To gull and fleece their fellow man, To while their days of privileged ease; With glass and carpets placed to please;

My roots support me as I stand tall, prevent erosion keeping our streams pristine.

his summer, the Wild HeART Student Art Prize Finalists’ Exhibition Trail will see Maroochy Bushland Botanic Garden come alive with vibrant artworks created by local children and young people.

This year, visitors can vote for their favourite artwork in the People’s Choice award which will be announced on 21 January.

The free exhibition trail invites you to wander among 22 incredible art pieces by talented nature-lovers, aged 5 to 18 years.

Sunshine Coast Council Environment and Liveability Portfolio Councillor Maria Suarez invited the community to share in this celebration of creativity and care for nature at the 2025 Wild HeART Finalists’ Exhibition Trail.

As you explore the larger-than-life outdoor gallery, you will encounter graceful whale sharks, shy bandicoots, colourful butterflies, birds galore and more. Each piece showcases our youngest residents’ love of nature and native Australian species.

Artworks are accessible via gravel and sealed paths, and open lawn grass.

C

an you answer that question for him in a happy way for the new year? Alfie is an adorable, very handsome, 8-year-old, medium-haired gentleman who sadly found himself in the pound after his owner passed away.

He’s been in the care of 4Paws Animal Rescue for a couple of months now and, while he initially struggled with his new surroundings at the cattery, he’s come out of his shell and shown us a very sweet, endearing and playful side to his personality.

He’d love nothing more than someone to spend a little time with him and make him feel part of a family again. His favourite toy is a bird on a string and he’d be absolutely delighted if you played with him while he watches and pounces and plans his next move.

Local native plants for your garden

on’t use local native plants in your garden because it’s the right thing to do, or because it’s good for the environment, or even because it’s good for your karma! Use local native plants in your garden because they are diverse, spectacular, beautiful, habitat friendly and they are true local Aussies!

We are fortunate enough to live in one of the most biodiverse regions on the planet, we have over 3500 local native plants in south-east Queensland and an estimated 1800 plants native to the Sunshine Coast area! That’s a lot of diversity and a lot of choice, when it comes to local people choosing local plants for local gardens, did I use local perhaps one too many times ...

So, what is it that stops us all using local native plants in the garden? Besides ease of

availability (that’s where we can help), there is this gaping chasm in our knowledge. A gap in knowledge between what’s in the backyard and what’s in the mysterious bushland / forest / heathland beyond, but there are resources and information to remedy that lack of knowledge about our local native flora. We need to challenge ourselves to learn more about our native plants and luckily, it’s never been easier.

Great information is now available on local native plants via Google, iNaturalist and many other apps. These are all free sources of information, which is always a plus. Also, with Smart phones you can even use your photo app to assist with ID and information - luckily for botanists like me they’re not that good yet ... at least for Australian Natives (probably because we’ve got so many); so we might have jobs for a little while longer.

For many of us, nothing beats a good old-fashioned book, a hard copy that you can read at your leisure, and that’s where Forest Heart EcoNursery can also help. We focus on native plants, animals, fungi and ecological restoration.

he super-cells and mini-tornadoes have already started to roll in across the Maleny Plateau this storm season. People often say to me that we must be busy after the storms, but, actually, most of our clients have already had the preventative work done as part of our ongoing management of their trees and properties.

We make sure their trees are safe, healthy, and aesthetically pleasing.

It is the people who are not proactive about managing their trees, who get caught out when the storms come, sometimes with disastrous consequences.

The photo shows an African tulip tree, Spathodea campanulata, which came down in the last storm. It’s at the bottom of Landsborough Hill at the roundabout on Landsborough-Maleny Road. Summer Lovers he plants that feature in the spectacular local wildflower season in winter and spring tend to steal the limelight when it comes choosing species for many habitat gardeners' projects.

Bird enthusiasts will appreciate more than 100 species found in the reserve including the green catbird, known for its call that sounds just like a cat! Another highlight is one of Queensland’s largest red cedar trees, believed to be more than 400 years old, standing proudly within the reserve.

Environment and Liveability Portfolio Councillor, Tim Burns, said: “This display is a wonderful opportunity for our community to pay deeper attention to their surroundings, whether through seeing, smelling or listening.

The exhibition is open daily from 9.30am to 3.30pm (excluding public holidays) throughout the year. It is a perfect activity for all ages and an ideal way for families to spend some time in nature.

Sunshine Coast Division 5 Councillor Winston Johnston described the Forest Sensing exhibit as a fantastic way for families to discover nature.

Quiet visitors may enjoy seeing a pademelon in the undergrowth, which despite its name, is not a type of fruit, but a small and very cute rainforest wallaby.

Summer is the perfect time to see the spectacular red flowers of the black bean tree, and if you look closely, you might even see the rare Richmond birdwing butterfly sipping its nectar.

It is quite disheartening to see the forest clearing along the Sunshine Motorway. I know we all want to get where we’re going more quickly, but I can’t help wondering if there is not a better way to go about it than removing the last few remaining pockets of native vegetation on the Sunshine Coast.

I don’t have any solutions, but I can’t help thinking about the trees and birds and animals, and even the microorganisms that have been killed, or at the very least had their habitat destroyed.

Finally, as another year ends and a new one begins, I would like to thank all of the wonderful clients who have supported our growing business throughout the year, we could not survive without you.

Trauma and PTSD

“This tool uses questions about your experiences and symptoms to assess your likelihood that you have PTSD, and is entirely confidential.

It is very normal to experiences stress symptoms following a traumatic event, but a global PTSD expert says there are signs when to seek a diagnosis for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

“Of course, any mental health diagnosis will still need to occur with a qualified health professional such as your GP, but this screener could be the difference between someone ignoring their symptoms, or realising they might need help.

The National PTSD Research Centre at UniSC'S Thompson Institute is home to world-class research, clinical trials and community outreach.

N

ational PTSD Research Centre Director Professor Alain Brunet at the University of the Sunshine Coast’s Thompson Institute says, “PTSD diagnoses are on the rise in Australia, exacerbated by floods, bushfires and other climate change-related weather events, and of course terrible events like what happened at Bondi a few weeks ago.”

Anyone affected by such events need to take their time to process a traumatic event before gradually resuming normal activities, Professor Brunet advises.

“The great majority of people will return to normal functioning in good time, which is why it is important to ensure safety has returned, properly acknowledge what has occurred, comfort each other and check in with our loved ones, and participate in collective rituals such as memorial services and laying flowers, which are all important steps towards healing.”

Professor Alain Brunet says while stress symptoms are normal, it’s the duration that matters.

“People should give themselves time to bounce back, and it’s normal to experience symptoms such as nightmares, intrusive thoughts, startling easily, difficulty concentrating, emotional withdrawal, avoidance or hypervigilance, even flashbacks,” Professor Brunet said.

“These are all normal responses, but the duration is what we need to watch. If after several weeks these symptoms are still occurring, this is when people should consider seeking further expert support.”

Professor Brunet, a global leader in PTSD who has developed a promising new treatment called Reconsolidation Therapy, says a good first stop is a free pre-diagnostic screening tool to help people determine if they meet the threshold to pursue a diagnosis.

TICK TROUBLE

unshine Coast Health is encouraging the community to learn about tick safety and when they should seek medical advice this summer, with the hot weather meaning the arachnids are now more active.

While tick exposure is prevalent year-round, emergency department doctors see an increase in presentations during the warmer, more humid months.

Emergency Physician Dr Sarah Davidson explains that while there are three types of ticks in the area, the one people worry most about is paralysis ticks.

“Normally they come in because they don’t know how to get the ticks out, very, very rarely we get people come in who have had envenomation from a paralysis tick,” Dr Davidson said.

“I think most people can manage this at home, often it’s tourists coming to see us - they’ve come up from a part of Australia or overseas where they’ve never seen these ticks before, and they get quite worried about it.”

Something to be mindful of, is tick-related anaphylaxis.

“We do live in an area where we have a very high rate comparatively to the rest of Australia for anaphylaxis to paralysis ticks, and that would just look like an allergy to anything else, so some people would get hives and then if you’re having an anaphylaxis then that’s red skin, swollen tongue, feeling like you can’t breathe – call an ambulance immediately if that’s the case," Dr Davidson said.

The correct method for safely removing a tick at home is to either freeze adult ticks with a spray that contains ether or apply a cream that contains permethrin

The centre also offers helpful resources for people experiencing trauma, and is currently running clinical trials for Reconsolidation Therapy, a promising new treatment for PTSD. Professor Brunet says the therapy is exciting for clinicians because there’s no current cure for PTSD, however this treatment can be effective in as little as six sessions. It has already been taught to clinicians dealing with the effects of war in Ukraine.

One study resulted in about 70 to 84 percent of study participants reporting meaningful improvement in symptoms after six 25-minute therapy sessions.

“The number one thing you must not do with paralysis ticks is to keep touching them, every time you touch a paralysis tick it will envenomate you with some of its venom so once you’ve found one, leave it alone, work out how you’re going to take it out, and get it out,” Dr Davidson said.

“Often people come into emergency and say ‘I’ve taken the tick off, but I’ve still got the head in’, the head doesn’t really matter it’s just another little bit of debris – we get debris under our skin all the time – that’s just going to come out naturally, the part of the tick that is actually going to envenomate you, is that body.” Emergency Physician Dr Sarah Davidson

To prevent a tick bite, people should use an insect repellent containing picaridin or DEET, especially around their ankles, and wear light-coloured clothing. When gardening or camping its ideal to wear long pants tucked into socks, a long-sleeved shirt, and a wide-brimmed hat.

These are not threats, they are signals Here are three steps to create a structure for managing non-resourceful emotional responses.

Please note, mental tools such as the one below are only useful if you use it.

1. Catch it - Nod your head and acknowledge, I’m overwhelmed, stressed, peaking out, and say YES! This changes physiology, (and psychology) if you don’t you open the door for maladaptive responses (sweaty palms, increased heart rate etc., avoiding said task).

2. Check it - Mind where your mind goes. Tell yourself ‘be where my feet are’, press your toes into the ground 6-10 times - this puts you in the moment, not in the anxious future, or the scary miserable past.

3. Change it - The key is learning to manage the signal. Breathwork is the fastest way to downshift your stress response. It creates the mental space to think and act. So draw breath, exhale fear, and breath in confidence, and absolute clarity.

4. Fear isn’t the enemy of 2026 — avoidance is. When you stop resisting emotion and start responding to it with intention, fear becomes information, stress becomes direction, and overwhelm becomes a prompt to slow down and lead yourself.

Nothing changes until we honestly evaluate our life and engage in making the changes we know we need or should make. Many people starting this development don’t know where to start. I begin with relationships, wellbeing (spirit, soul and body) and purpose.

Our choices really do make our life.

Our purpose fuels our life, yet a lot of people don’t take the time to excavate their souls and find out what their purpose is. Think about what you’d like to pursue this year and go for it. It will always involve something you’re passionate about and you can always add it gradually, and before you know it, it’ll be a significant part of your life.

When we seek progress not perfection, we build momentum and that transforms us from the inside out. I hope this year you define new parts of yourself and become all you were intended to be.

By What Authority - Rod Kyle Jesus had just driven the moneychangers from the inner court of Herod's Temple in Jerusalem. Approached by the Chief Priests, He was asked, "By what authority are you doing these things?" (Mark 11:28).

That really is a valid question. Authority makes life functional. We face it at every turn in our lives.

Let's be honest. How can we know if anyone's moral or religious authority is valid if it originates only from the heart of fallible man? Why should someone else's idea be any more valid than mine? Necessity demands an objective standard handed down to fallible man by an infallible God! There is such a standard. The Bible states, "Even so the thoughts of God no one knows except the Spirit of God... which things we (inspired men) speak, not in words taught by human wisdom, but those taught by the Spirit,..." (1 Corinthians 2:11,13.) This passage tells us that God's mind has been made known to us through the inspired writers of the Bible. Here are a few of the many other passages that teach this essential truth — 2 Timothy 3:15-17, Romans 10:17, Ephesians 3:3-4.

Read them, because here is the standard you must follow.

Jesus put it this way in John 12:48, "He who rejects Me, and does not receive my sayings, has one who judges him; the word I spoke is what will judge him at the last day."

“It’s so important people know they’re not alone and that help is available,” Minister O’Connor said.

“Our state-funded services do an incredible job on the ground every day supporting our vulnerable Queenslanders.

“I want to thank all frontline workers across the housing system for their tireless efforts in 2025 and give a special shout-out to staff working over the holiday period to help people doing it tough – this is vital work and the compassion shown by our teams every day is greatly appreciated.”
