A Meaningful Thanksgiving The celebration of Thanksgiving has different significance to many. It’s the kickoff of a four-day weekend, football marathons, family reunions and feasts with friends and loved ones, sharing stories of personal blessings today and historically, when pilgrims and natives united. That simple gathering in 1621 survived a harsh winter, and produced a bountiful harvest for human survival.

To some unfortunate children in our society, their survival resulted from the love and support of organizations such as Hephzibah Children’s Association in Oak Park. In this issue, we celebrate Thanksgiving by going to the core of what the holiday means to us: giving back to those less fortunate, connecting with family and friends. We’ve moved beyond harvesting crops to a spiritual harvest in order to find a deeper meaning in our lives.

On the cover, we feature Hinsdale residents Jane Hartschuh, Tiffany Knaul, Christine Trainer, Lisa Read and Kim Williams, and their generosity and commitment to Hephzibah House and the children in desperate need of family, love and hope. Each Thanksgiving, these ladies and their families visit the Oak Park location with food, table settings and gifts for traumatized children, some of whom experienced violence and abuse, sometimes at the hands of their own parents or guardians. During the Thanksgiving Day visit, the Hinsdale families watch their children play with the foster children on the Hephzibah yard. Smiles and laughter are shared between children from all socio-economic backgrounds during this thankful day, and memories are left behind for all children to cherish. Those remaining at Hephzibah receive a sense of security and hope, while those returning to the suburbs receive a deeper gift of understanding and purpose.

Christ Church of Oak Brook continues its mission to help local families and thousands of people worldwide through its “Take Root” initiative. Hinsdale Magazine features the Rev. Dr. Daniel Meyer, senior pastor, and Sherri Adams, executive director of stewardship and generosity at Christ Church, which has grown to more than 6,000 members. Dr. Meyer is a frequent columnist for Hinsdale Magazine, and as you will read in Janis Kaenal’s article, the church continues to give back throughout the year, helping poverty-stricken families in Chicago’s Lawndale Community Church, to the slums of Nairobi, Kenya. Its recent renovation in Oak Brook will be unveiled to the public during an open house from 3 to 5 p.m. on Nov. 24, with a special dedication service at 5 p.m. in the new auditorium.

How Trust-Owned Life Insurance Can Be Used Effectively In Your Estate Plan

What if I told you, with complete certainty, that you will die one day.

Would you believe me? Of course, you would. But, is it something you want to talk about? Of course not! As uncomfortable as it is to think about, death is inevitable, and planning for it is often overlooked due to fear and uncertainty. Too many people don’t plan; if you don’t have a plan, the government has one for you, and I can assure you that your heirs won’t like it. Sure, your family, heirs, and loved ones need to be taken into consideration while planning your estate, but in cases of large estates, things like gifting, taxes, charitable giving, and legal documents take priority to efficiently and effectively transfer your estate when you ultimately pass.

I want to share with you a tool that has been a cornerstone of many of my clients’ plans and utilizes many benefits that they (and you) are able to take advantage of.

How It Works Many high net worth individuals often wonder about the best way to create a seamless estate plan. Though there are many options, trustowned life insurance (TOLI) has been proven to be very beneficial, as it enables the trust to provide for the beneficiaries by balancing

inheritances among the heirs estate tax-free, which is one of the top issues among wealthy individuals. This strategy is also beneficial for individuals who desire to give to charity upon passing. The trustowned life insurance strategy works well for those of high net worth, who have illiquid assets (such as businesses or qualified plans), and who live in states with large state death taxes.

When an individual purchases a life insurance policy, it can often be most beneficial to have their irrevocable life insurance trust (ILIT) own the policy. An ILIT is an irrevocable trust designed to own life insurance. By utilizing this strategy, assets owned by the trust are able to pass to the beneficiaries according to the grantor’s wishes, without being subject to federal estate taxes. This is possible because the owner is the trust, which now removes the proceeds from the insured’s estate. The trustee then maintains the policies, which opens up the family to a variety of important tax planning and charitable giving opportunities. At death, the death benefit proceeds will be paid to the designated beneficiaries of the trust income and estate tax-free, as the trust is no longer owned by the estate. The premiums are typically funded by annual exclusion gifts but can also be funded by using private financing or premium financing.

Advantages of Trust-Owned Life Insurance This strategy can not only help achieve effective tax planning but also allows for the proceeds to provide liquidity to help the estate pay expenses and taxes once the grantor passes away. This liquidity opportunity is available due to a provision that allows the trust the discretion to purchase assets from either spouse’s estate or to make loans to either estate, which keeps cash available for estate liquidity purchases.

Additionally, an ILIT gives an individual the opportunity to donate to a charity while preserving an inheritance for their chosen beneficiaries. The ILIT provides a death benefit that replaces the value of the gift made to charity. Furthermore, the gifts made to the ILIT will reduce the overall value of the estate, which will, in turn, reduce the amount that would be calculated in the taxable amount.

Potential Pitfalls of the Gifting Limitations If you are thinking about gifting to your life insurance policy, you should be aware of the gift tax liability. In 2018, any gift that is greater than $15,000 for the year ($30,000 for married couples) applies against the gift tax exclusion and requires that Form 709 be filed.1 The maximum premium you would be able to gift without gift tax liability would be $30,000. Many times, this just won’t suffice to properly plan one’s estate.

Avoid Gifting Large Premiums to Your Life Insurance Trust Many people need large policies that require much more than what the annual gift exclusion allows to cover their needs. This is where premium financing can be a valuable tool and has helped countless clients of mine achieve financial success in retirement.

How It Works Premium financing is a planning strategy that enables you to pay the premiums for the coverage you need without having to liquidate assets. It involves an arrangement through which you borrow money from a bank to pay for your life insurance policy.2 The policy’s cash value is generally used as the majority of the collateral for the loan.

By leveraging a lender’s capital, rather than your own, to pay annual premiums, you can retain your capital in other investments. The loan could be paid off from a portion of the death benefit proceeds upon

the death of the insured(s), a tax-free withdrawal from a portion of the cash value, or an asset sale in the future.

The Benefits Premium financing can be a valuable tool for those who want to maximize their estate with a substantial life insurance death benefit and without having to liquidate and pay taxes on other investments in order to pay large premium payments. Premium financing also avoids using up your annual gift exclusions and reducing your overall lifetime exemptions. When the death benefit is paid to the trust, it is generally paid income and estate tax-free, leaving more for your heirs.

While premium financing can be an advantageous strategy for some, it does have associated risks. For example, lending rates may increase more than projected, which may require collateral to be posted with the bank. If securities are posted as collateral, and those securities decrease in value, the lender may require additional collateral to be posted.

Putting It in Perspective Imagine having a thriving family business that you would like to leave to your heirs, or maybe you want to leave your children a substantial piece of land. In your estate planning, however, you discover that your estate will be subject to a $10 million tax bill. The only way for your estate to pay this tax liability, in the absence of additional advanced planning, may be to sell the family business or land you wish to pass on. You don’t want your family or heirs to be forced into a fire sale, where they have to take any offer just to liquidate as quickly as possible. Fortunately, there is another way to address these potential liquidity needs.

Life insurance can be both a tax-efficient and cost-effective source of funds for addressing these issues. Many high net worth individuals use life insurance and trusts in their overall estate plan to help preserve their estate from tax liabilities and other expenses. To pay for these large premiums, life insurance premium financing may be an attractive option. If you are attempting to use any of the above strategies, it’s important to let an experienced and independent life insurance agent and attorney help you navigate the nuances.1

A Thanksgiving tradition of service FIVE HINSDALE FAMILIES GIVE GIFT OF THANKSGIVING TO FOSTER CHILDREN AT HEPHZIBAH IN OAK PARK EACH YEAR

hanksgiving is generally perceived as a picturesque family holiday, in which relatives gather around the dinner-table for a nourishing meal arrayed with victuals that are often consumed but once a year.

But for five Hinsdale families, the holiday has come to signify something deeper, connecting them with children who could not more starkly contrast with their own in point of resources and upbringing.

About the beginning of the current decade, Christine Trainer, Tiffany Knaul and Lisa Read were all members of the philanthropy committee of the Hinsdale Junior Woman’s Club (HJWC), which was in search of a new charity to serve as its biennial beneficiary for the coming two club years.

According to Knaul, various charities submitted proposals to the club, which would then dispatch committee members to visit the organizations, and report back to the club regarding their experiences. Knaul was assigned to visit Hephzibah Children’s Association, an Oak Park-based social service agency that provides temporary foster care to distressed children.

“I felt like after visiting close to ten [charities] in the area, it was such a different—something so different than what we’re used to,” she said.

Read said she was impressed with Hephzibah executive director Merry Beth Sheets, whom she said was “so hands-on, and cared about each kid and their case, and advocated for them in the courts.” “[Some children] don’t have shoes when they come [to Hephzibah],” she said, “because they’re usually coming from a hospital or a police station.”

Trainer said many of the children staying at Hephzibah have either witnessed or experienced traumatic incidents.

“It’s really just heart-breaking stories that these kids, whether it was physical, mental or sexual abuse, or they may have witnessed violent murders,” she said. ...

“The holidays to them is a sad time, because it’s just a reminder of their lack of family; and Hephzibah does such an incredible job of giving them a home that they don’t have. We’ve always felt so blessed to share that holiday, and serve them and be with them, and bring some joy.”

The HJWC named Hephzibah its beneficiary before the 2012-13 club season, and Trainer said the ladies conducted a couple of drives for the organization at first, meeting with Hephzibah staff members.

“They brought up Thanksgiving as being one of the opportunities to volunteer,” she said. “I had no family in the area, so I was interested in the opportunity to serve someone on Thanksgiving. My husband and I had been looking into opportunities to serve on Thanksgiving, since we didn’t have family here.”

The ladies first served Thanksgiving dinner at Hephzibah with their families in 2012, alongside mutual friend Jane Hartschuh of Hinsdale and then-HJWC president Denise Howe and their families.

The first couple of years, they said their efforts were attended with some difficulties.

“It was hard at first,” Read said. “We didn’t know what we were doing.—And the stories were heartwrenching, and we were there, eye to eye, with these kids that may have been burned or whatever, and weren’t going home with any parents that Thanksgiving.”

“I think our first year or two, it was hard, because you don’t know how the kids are going to react,” Knaul said.

“Some of them, something can trigger them so quickly, and they can freak out, and you don’t know why or how to handle it.”

Since that time, the Trainer, Knaul, Read and Hartschuh families have continued the tradition annually, and have been joined on a number of occasions

by Kim Williams of Hinsdale and her family.

“It’s quite something to be able to be in that house with those kids,” Williams said. “It feels so private. It’s an honor to be able to serve them, because typically you wouldn’t be able to have that kind of interaction with kids that are in that environment.”

For more than 25 years, Terri has been volunteering at The Courtyard, the consignment shop that houses high-end, gently-used furniture and decor in downtown Hinsdale. Proceeds from The Courtyard directly support Wellness House.

Following his parents’ legacy at Wellness House, Jessie is also an avid volunteer there and beyond.

“I look at giving back as very important,” he said. “We have been blessed over the years, and doing charitable work is important.”

Jessie serves as the secretary on the board of directors of HCS Family Services.

“[At HCS], we are dedicated to strengthening our community by reducing hunger and promoting self-sufficiency,” he said.

Christ Church, growing and strengthening the lives and faith of families

W

ith almost 6,000 members, a ministry of the congregation led by 11 clergymen and the equivalent of 60 full-time staff members and a 57-member board of trustees and elders, Christ Church of Oak Brook can be grouped as part of what is called the “megachurch” phenomenon.

With a large fellowship and an attendance continuing to grow, Christ Church is expanding its walls, both literally and figuratively.

This $27 million renovation of the Oak Brook campus is the largest capital development since the first building effort. The upgrades include a new hospitality atrium and auditorium to support worship, conferences and specialevent ministries, new standards for environmentally-friendly technologies, and a complete overhaul and expansion of the parking grounds. The brand-new modern auditorium features state-of-the-art lighting and sound systems, plus three large LED screens to allow for a contemporary way to worship, while keeping a traditional feel. The auditorium now seats 1,100 people in both an amphitheater and flat-floor configuration with traditional chairs, theater-style seating and

even couches, café tables and bar-style seating. The floorto-ceiling windows invite natural light in, as well as curious visitors from the community. The hospitality atrium is decorated with chrome and white, modern chandeliers along the tall windows, and centered overhead is a metallic world map emphasizing the church’s mission with 90 partnerships with people and organizations around the world starting right in its backyard.

Funding this vision was Take Root, which is a discipleship initiative aimed to strengthen the lives and faith of families with a focus on service to others. One of the goals of Take Root was to grow the capacity of the Oak Brook location, add a presence in Downers Grove and extend the church’s support of services to thousands of people in need worldwide.

“Our local focus is on a pocket of poverty that exists right around the corner from us,” said Sherri Adams, executive director of stewardship and development at Take Root.

“Along the Roosevelt Road corridor, there is a community of under-resourced people, and through programs aimed at student mentoring, both at the elementary and high-school levels, practical job skills, training and teaching English as a second language, we have invested both people and

This area sits in the center of the church building and serves as a meeting place for the community, a viewing center for worship services, as well as an area for refreshments and snacks for events and on the weekends.

The church offers a robust family ministry program from preschool through high school, and even has a Discovery Center for the younger children to enjoy imaginative learning and active play.

Resilient, a new mission partner started through the Take Root initiative, mobilizes volunteers for tutoring and mentoring students in under-resourced areas nearby, said Dan Meyer, senior pastor at Christ Church.

“Issues and problems we associate with the city have come to DuPage County, and the desire is to get in early enough to help,” Meyer said. “We’re mobilizing scores of volunteers and funds to try and help with a variety of child-focused, familyfocused ministries.”

In addition to Take Root, Christ Church operates a monthly food pantry at Salvation Army in Oakbrook Terrace, providing food, clothing and other basic necessities for hundreds of families, and also partners with the Lawndale Community Church and a number of other programs around the Chicagoland area.

The global focus is in Kenya, where Christ Church has invested in two Christian schools and a church. A school in Nairobi, the second largest slum in Kenya, struggled to retain teachers, since many families could not afford to pay small fees, and the children who completed schooling were not able

The state-of-the-art technology throughout the auditorium will further enhance the worship experience for congregants, and also open opportunities for events and conferences to be held at the location.

The marching band and color guard kicked off festivities with a combined routine, followed by the varsity cheerleading and poms squads.

The afternoon also featured a series of competitions, the most notable of which was an extended tug-of-war match between student-athletes and select faculty members.

The “superhero” theme of this year’s Homecoming permeated each of the traditional court skits.

In the final skit of the afternoon, Homecoming king Sean Kelly stole the show as Paul Blart, mall cop, the titular character of the movie of the same name, played by Kevin James.

The following morning, the busy week continued for the court, which was paraded through downtown Hinsdale aboard a series of convertibles.

The Young Community Changemakers (YC2) program will consist of 25 juniors and seniors from both local high schools, educating them on philanthropy.

Hinsdale’s 24th Annual SILENT PARADE Photography by Daniel Garcia The 24th annual Silent Parade, which honors all fallen firefighters in the line of duty and any civilian who perished in a fire, marched off from the Hinsdale Fire Department on the evening of Oct. 12.

This parade has become a proud tradition in the area, and is heavily attended by several Chicagoland area fire departments.

West suburban firefighters

West suburban residents are encouraged to line the streets with American flags and flashlights to pay their respects for lives lost, and to express their gratitude for the men and women who serve their communities as first responders, firefighters and emergency medical services personnel.

The parade traveled west along Chicago Ave. in Hinsdale through Clarendon Hills, Westmont and Downers Grove, ending in Lisle at Trinity Lutheran Church, two blocks south of Ill. Rte. 53 and Maple Ave. Eight years ago, the Hinsdale Fire Department experienced its second lineof-duty death in its more than 100-year history.

The Silent Parade rolls through.

Deputy chief Mark Johnson suffered a heart attack in the fire station while on duty in 2010, and firefighter Walter Flemming died while fighting a structure fire in 1946.

Both men are immortalized in the department’s history, and will always be remembered as men of honor who served this community with great pride.

this year’s production of The Nutcracker features a cast of 100 dancers, including Salt Creek Ballet students, from 8 to 17 years old. Dancing the role of Princess Clara will be two Hinsdale Central seniors, Bahda Hoang and Rheana Montesantos. Hoang has trained at Salt Creek Ballet for five years, dancing solo roles in Paquita and as the Arabian princess in The Nutcracker.

Montesantos started dancing at Salt Creek Ballet at the age of 3. In February, she placed first in the senior classical

division at Youth America Grand Prix (YAGP), and participated in the YAGP finals in New York City. Montesantos has been awarded scholarships to Ballet West summer program and the Colorado Ballet pre-professional division.

Dancing the role of the Sugar Plum Fairy and Cavalier are Emily Bowen and Ilya Kozadayev. Bowen, having danced with the Houston Ballet as a leading artist, is currently on the teaching faculty at the Charlotte Ballet.

Kozadayev, an international awardwinning dancer and choreographer, is a former soloist with the Houston Ballet, and is currently on staff at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts.

Salt Creek Ballet is a non-profit Illinois corporation supported in part by the Illinois Arts Council Agency through federal funds provided by the National Endowment for the Arts, the Grover Hermann Foundation and BMO Harris Bank.

Tickets for the Nov. 24th performances are $32 to $43 for adults, and $32 to $38 for children (12 and under) and seniors (65 and older). A limited number of second balcony tickets are available, starting at $22. Tickets for the Sugar Plum Party benefit performance on Nov. 25 are $37 to $48 for adults and $37 to $43 for children and seniors. A limited number of second balcony tickets are available for $27.

Hinsdale’s Allen brothers establishing noteworthy football tradition BY MIKE ELLIS

Former Hinsdale Central and Michigan State offensive lineman Jack Allen participated at the NFL scouting combine on Feb 26.

M

illions of kids grow up playing sports competitively and recreationally, clinging to the dream of playing professionally under the bright lights.

For most, this lofty vision is never realized, and over time, it becomes apparent that a different career path is necessary. But for a select few, the opportunity to compete in college and even at the professional level awaits.

These athletes generally combine natural endowments with a determined drive to hone their craft and continue improving.

It is rare for a family to produce one Division I athlete, but the Allen family of Hinsdale has had the pleasure of introducing three.Jack, Brian and Matt Allen each began their football careers as Hinsdale Falcons, while also dabbling in a variety of other sports, including baseball, basketball and wrestling.

Today, Brian is a member of the Los Angeles Rams, who at press-time, held the best record in the National Football League; Jack is pursuing a life beyond football after a two-year stint with the New Orleans Saints; and Matt is following in the footsteps

of his brothers on the Michigan State University football team.

“It’s been fun to watch, but nerve-wracking,” said John Allen, the father of the three Hinsdale natives.

John’s uncle competed in the NFL, and his dad played football at the University of Wisconsin; but he said he never expected them all to enjoy the success they have experienced over the course of their respective football careers.

When the Allens arrived at Hinsdale Central, all three focused exclusively on football and wrestling, with the exception of Jack, who played baseball his freshman year.

John Allen said wrestling and football go hand-in-hand— especially for offensive linemen like his boys.

“I don’t think that there’s anything better to prepare them for what they went through,” he said.

Upon graduating from Central, Allen said, as with many young athletes, he believes the NFL was in the back of his boys’ minds, “but you don’t know how realistic it is.”

According to Allen, in just the few years that elapsed

between Jack and Brian entering high school (three years), he observed an acceleration in the college recruiting process.

“A lot of schools weren’t offering eighth-graders,” he said.

“And then my middle son got offered a scholarship before he played on the varsity team. ... I thought somebody was pulling my leg.”

In their progress from starting at center at Michigan State to the NFL, Allen said Jack and Brian essentially followed opposite paths.

According to Allen, Jack was told that he would likely be drafted in the third or fourth round of the seven-round NFL Draft, but he ultimately went undrafted, and signed as a free agent with the Saints in 2016. Brian, on the other hand, was informed that he could expect to be selected in the sixth or seventh round, on the back end of the draft, but the Rams decided to take him in the fourth round with the 111th pick earlier this year.

“It came as kind of a surprise,” Allen said. “I thought that he would go through the same path that our older guy went through, because they’re not the biggest guys at their positions.”

As far as having boys in the NFL is concerned, perhaps no one is better acquainted than Archie Manning, who was an NFL quarterback from 1971 to 1984, spending most of his career with the Saints, and is the father of Peyton Manning, who is second all-time in passing yards in the history of the NFL, and Eli Manning, a two-time Super Bowl champion quarterback with the New York Giants. HM had the pleasure to visit with Manning when he was in Chicago this past summer.

“It wasn’t a plan for us,” Manning said. “We had three little boys—we just wanted to raise kids.”

Like the Allens, the Mannings encouraged all three of their boys to play a variety of sports, but ultimately, football was the sport at which they most excelled.

“They both went to good organizations...and enjoyed some success,” Manning said.

Manning felt that Peyton’s and Eli’s respective personalities fit well with the cities and markets in which they played.

“The New York media’s tough,” he said, “and your kids are all different. Peyton’s a more high-strung guy; Eli’s a laid-back

guy. A lot of people said that Eli had the perfect disposition for the New York media—quiet, laid-back. ...

“If there’s 30 guys in front of his locker after a game in Indianapolis, Peyton knew probably who 25 of them were, what paper they were with. Not that it was a big deal [for him]; that’s just part of his make-up. Eli in New York would have 80 guys in front of his locker after a game, and Eli might have known who two of them were.”

According to Allen, while Brian’s NFL career is just beginning, Jack’s recently concluded after two years. Marred by injury, Jack was on the Saints’ injured reserve for much of 2017, before being placed on the 53-man active roster for the last four games of the season. In the offseason, he signed with the hometown Chicago Bears, but was waived in August. Given Jack’s experience over the last couple of years, Allen said his main wish for Brian is that he is able to remain healthy.

“My hopes for him are that he stay healthy,” Allen said.

“That’s all I pray for, and whatever else happens, happens.”

In a league in which, according to the NFL Players Association, the average career spans only roughly 3.3 years, it is understandable that health would be top of mind for any parent of an NFL player. Manning referenced the subject on several occasions, proudly recounting Peyton’s comeback with the Denver Broncos, which culminated in a Super Bowl in his final NFL season.

“We didn’t know if Peyton would play again,” Manning said, adding that his son had undergone four neck surgeries before being medically cleared to play. ... “He went to a new team, and what they did over four years was pretty incredible.”

When asked specifically about the Allen family, Manning said, “If I gave them one piece of advice, I’d say, ‘Enjoy the journey.’”

That journey continues for John Allen, as his middle son Brian progresses in his rookie season with the Rams, while his youngest son Matt, now a college sophomore, follows in his brothers’ footsteps at Michigan State.

“All [Matt] can do is work as hard as he can,” Allen said, “and see what happens.” n
