LETTER from THE PUBLISHER
Hinsdale Magazine Surging Readership The Hinsdale Cooks! Kitchen Walk will feature seven Hinsdale homes, one of which is profiled in this issue. The Collins family has updated a Tudor revival designed by renowned local architect R. Harold Zook. Kitchen walk attendees will have the opportunity to tour the first floor of this home in May. Djordje Mihailovic, the son of Hinsdale-based Chicago Blast founder Aleks Mihailovic, has been honing his soccer skills since he could barely walk. All of his work in the backyard soccer field has paid off, and today, he competes for the Chicago Fire, the club he grew up rooting for. At the end of his rookie season, Mihailovic suffered an ACL injury, but with the help of Dr. Brian Forsythe, a Hinsdale resident and surgeon, he is back on the pitch. Today, Mihailovic is part of the U.S. Men’s National Team, which hopes to qualify for the 2020 Olympics and 2022 World Cup. Hinsdale Magazine wishes him all the best. On behalf of the Hinsdale Magazine staff, I want to thank our readers who have helped our online digital magazine surge to over 119,092 readers since we launched the on-line platform on www.HinsdaleMag.com and www.issuu.com/ HinsdaleMagazine. EVERYDAY LIVING for the outdoors When longtime Hinsdale resident Jeff Wingren’s father, Jan “Swede” Wingren, immigrated from Sweden in 1957, he started laying sod with a $5 wheelbarrow he bought at a garage sale. “He loved the outdoors and was very artistic,” Wingren said. From the start, “Swede” blended architecture and nature, and was soon recognized in the industry for his artistic use of hardscapes, natural lines, granite boulder walls and outcropping stone. “He was a visionary in the landscape industry,” Wingren said. For more than 60 years, Wingren Landscape has led the industry in all things outdoor. Today, the trend is to create outdoor environments that are enjoyed all year long. “The trend is to build smaller homes with larger outdoor living space,” Wingren said. “Homeowners are spending more time enjoying their backyard. Families are building larger outdoor living spaces to include patios, outdoor kitchens and water features to provide space for eating, cooking and entertaining.” Wingren Landscape has expanded “Swede’s” vision with attention to detail and customer service. With a staff of more than 100 employees, Wingren designs, builds and maintains beautiful landscapes in the Hinsdale area. “We have a staff of professionals who get to know the homeowners and how they use their outdoor space” Wingren said. “We work to ensure your landscape makes a great impression.” 22

HISTORIC PRESERVATION Zook Tudor revival one of seven homes to be featured on Hinsdale Cooks! Kitchen Walk in May BY MIKE ELLIS
A
renovated Tudor revival home designed by renowned local architect R. Harold Zook will be one of seven homes on the Hinsdale Cooks! Kitchen Walk this May. Located on County Line Road just south of 47th Street in southeast Hinsdale, the interior of the 1928 home has been updated by the Collins family, which purchased the property in late 2016, and moved in at the end of last year. Homeowner Mimi Collins has previously resided in several homes in Hinsdale, and has also redone a number of homes in the region. Collins said she knew the previous owners, whose family

had possessed the home for roughly six decades. “I just always loved it; it’s one of those houses that you always loved,” she said. Upon purchasing the property, Collins said it “needed a ton of work” on the inside. “It had good bones, but it needed everything—plumbing, electrical,” she said. The exterior of the home is fortress-like, covered with stone, while also containing a number of signature Zook elements, such as a chevron pattern in the back of the home and a “spider-web” window near the front entrance. To enter the home, one passes through a tunnel-like passage, profusely
aligned in stone, up to the front door. But the interior is not at all the cold and cavernous atmosphere the provincial exterior would lead a visitor to anticipate. “I kept a lot of interesting details, and then tried to raise ceilings where I could; update it where I could, yet keep the integrity of the Zook,” Collins said. Prior to the renovation, Collins said the inside of the home did feel “dark and dreary,” but she worked to create a more modern and commodious layout, while retaining some of its original elements. Collins preserved the original spiral staircase, working with Clarendon Hills-based Michael Abraham Architecture to open up a nearby wall. She also kept the original metal windows and wood floors, the latter of which she refurbished to blend nicely with the otherwise updated interior. Some of the original windows had been replaced over the years; Collins said these appeared “mismatched,” and she accordingly replaced them with windows that more closely resemble the originals. “I kept what I could, and then the other ones, I tried to mimic,” she said. Collins said all of the doors are original—with the exception of one that was “not salvageable”—but repainted to produce a more consistent appearance throughout the home. In addition, Collins retained all three fireplaces, one of which is on the first floor and will therefore be viewable on the kitchen walk. This custom fireplace exhibits both the geometrical eye and creativity of Zook, incorporating one of his famous chevron patterns above the mantel. What was once the dining room has been converted into a more spacious kitchen from the original. The kitchen is a blend of modern and traditional, as Collins said she attempted to keep it “Old World.” “It kind of feels like you’re in Europe,” she said. The former kitchen is now a cozier room with noticeably lower ceilings than the rest of the first floor, and is most remarkable for the clover-like ceiling pattern inspired by the same shapes Zook employed on the outside of the home. Collins had a second, more prominent Zook “spider-web” installed into the rear door, as she said guests often miss the one in the closet window at the front of the home. In the rear of the home, she transformed a garage—which was insufficient to accommodate two vehicles—into a spacious below-grade room with sliding double-doors. Since the property is quite large, Collins teamed with Abraham on constructing a recently-completed coach-house adjacent to the main home. Upon scanning the perimeter of the coach-house, which
will be open to guests during the kitchen walk as well, one is likely to observe a rather close resemblance to the Katherine Legge Memorial Lodge, which was also a Zook design, that was relocated to the Hinsdale park of the same name south of County Line Road. “It’s not exact, but it’s pretty close,” Collins said. Collins described the coach-house as an “open concept” that is “more lofty” than the main home. “It looks like the house, but it’s more of a fresher version of it,” she said. The garage has been shifted to the coach-house, consisting of both a double and single apartment. And like the exterior of the main home, the coach-house also features a signature Zook chevron that careful observers will note. “This land was always here, and just empty,” Collins said. “I try to make [the coach-house] look like it’s always been here.” n The Collins home will be one of seven featured on the annual Hinsdale Cooks! Kitchen Walk, presented by the Hinsdale Historical Society Women’s Board, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on May 10. General admission to the kitchen walk is $50 for tickets purchased in advance, and $60 for tickets purchased the day of the event. A limited number of VIP trolley tickets are available for $100 apiece, which will open to the general public on April 3. Proceeds from the walk benefit the women’s board. People don’t necessarily want smaller houses, but they want more efficient houses.
Past life. I was a Cook County Assistant State’s Attorney; then later, I served as general counsel for a company. After having three children, I got my real estate license in 2006, when my youngest was three. I think being an attorney (I still am) teaches you to think in a certain way. It allows me to see things on a bigger picture, and helps with negotiating and explaining to clients how the contracts work, and what the deadlines are. I think it also helps when talking to other attorneys working on the deal. I can’t do both, but it is a helpful thing to have. The right stuff. People still really like an open kitchen to family room area. They also want mudrooms, a place for a home office and a finished basement. Homes at any price point need to be staged. You need to have it look like a Restoration Hardware catalog. HGTV has ruined us. Location, location. People want to be able to walk to town. They want a quiet street in an area where all the elementary schools are good. Generally speaking, schools are super important, which is why people gravitate towards places with highly-rated schools, like Hinsdale, Western Springs and Clarendon Hills.

Secret menu. The Private Listing Network, a network within the MLS that isn’t set up for the public, is a great way to premarket a property, as well as a great way for buyers to jump in early on something. It’s set up for people who are planning on putting their property on the market, but not quite ready. Shifting styles. The whole Marie Kondo mindset about tidying up and looking at what you have and what you really want has created a shift. People don’t necessarily want smaller houses, but they want more efficient houses. Like, “why do I need a formal living room if all I’m going to do is walk through it?” Some people don’t want a dining room; they just want more flexible space. Up and coming. I think Riverside and Brookfield are two places where you can get more for your money (a $500,000 house in Brookfield is probably going to be one of the most expensive homes there), but they still offer a lot. They’re close to the city, the schools are usually ranked pretty well, they have a trainline to the city, and their downtowns are becoming more of a destination.

I think my involvement in the community really helps me add value as a real estate agent.
Past life. I started out as a convertible bond salesperson, which has really translated well into real estate. I’m good at pairing people up with their needs, and obviously my negotiating skills come in handy. Born and raised. I grew up in Hinsdale; my family moved there when I was in first grade. Then I lived downtown for ten years, and my husband and I decided to came back to the western suburbs. We ended up in Western Springs, where we’ve been for 13 years. Cha-cha-cha-changes. The sizes of some of the houses have dramatically increased in Hinsdale. It started in the ‘90s and early 2000s, with all the tear-downs and people taking advantage of the bigger lots. I feel like the same trend is happening in Western Springs and La Grange. When I was growing up, I didn’t know anyone with a basketball court in their basement. Local expert. I focus on the western suburbs, because I think I’m in a better position to serve my clients when I actually know the neighbors, the schools and all the amenities. As an insider,
I’m really able to help them navigate the various towns. Community helper. I’m on the school board election committee, and I started a kids camp called Safety Village. Growing up, I had a sister who passed away in a traffic accident with a bus. My other sister and I opened a second one in Western Springs. I think my involvement in the community really helps me add value as a real estate agent. Opportunity awaits. I think you can find great opportunities in all of our towns—Clarendon Hills, Hinsdale, Western Springs, La Grange, Burr Ridge, Downers Grove and Oak Brook—even if your budget is on the lower end. There’s such a variety of inventory, and there are all kinds of tiers. Friend and neighbor. It doesn’t end with the sale—I remain a friend and a resource after my clients move in. I like to keep in touch, let them know about activities, social clubs to join, newcomer meetings. I have a client coming from the city who’s not moving in the area until summer, and I just let her know that Little League sign-up is right now, so she wouldn’t miss it. It’s very helpful to have an internal pulse on the area.

One of my favorite aspects of the job is helping buyers find the right home in the right area.
Past life. I started selling real estate in 2005, but before that, I was in the relocation business. My clients were major companies like Coca-Cola, Pepsi and Kentucky Fried Chicken. I helped their employees move from place to place, and it really gave me an expertise that comes in handy now. Transplant pro. I work with a lot of transferees who come from all over the country. They chose this area because of the schools and convenient location to the city and airports. Depending on where they’re coming from, sometimes it’s sticker-shock (Texas), and sometimes they find they get a lot more house than what they’re used to (California). Either way, I enjoy helping acquaint them to the area, and helping them find what they need. Setting the stage. I’m a certified staging consultant, so I know how to help sellers get their homes in top condition. It starts with removing a lot of furniture and packing things away. You have to make it easy for buyers to walk through and visualize themselves in your home. You don’t necessarily have to change the cabinets and countertops, but it’s important to make it as clean and fresh as possible. Look at the competition so you know what’s moving. The pictures have to be perfect. A pillow cannot be out of place.
It’s a match. One of my favorite aspects of the job is helping buyers find the right home in the right area. I like to take my buyers to different towns and explain what each town has to offer, so they can start focusing on an area that meets their needs. It’s a very individual thing. You really have to know how to read people and ask questions if you’re going to help them find the right fit. Is it important to be near the train? The airports? Certain school districts? Parks? You really have to listen. From renter to buyer. I’ve noticed lately there are a lot of buyers who came to the area as renters, and now that they’re comfortable in the community, want to settle in and be buyers. They’re usually at the starting price-points, and that really starts driving the market. People who sold at $600,000 would then move up to $800,000 or $900,000. Senior set. Empty-nesters represent another chunk of buyers. Most of them want to downsize, but they don’t necessarily want to leave their towns and neighborhoods—they’re looking for townhomes and ranch-style homes in the area. I have one buyer looking for a ranch-style with a first-floor laundry, and it doesn’t matter if it has a basement or not, because they probably won’t use it.

MEND A HEART HEARTFEST PHOTOS BY DANIEL GARCIA
Several hundred west suburban residents attended the annual Heartfest fundraiser for children with congenital heart defects at the Hyatt Lodge in Oak Brook on Feb. 16. The event, presented by the Mend A Heart Foundation, relocated from The Community House in Hinsdale to the Hyatt Lodge for the first time. The new space aptly accommodated the fundraiser, with silent and live auction items non-intrusively scattered throughout the main room. A number of attendees entered into a raffle that featured three prizes of $500, $1,500 and $5,000, respectively. During the program, emcee Scott Marshall alluded to the fundraising target of $1 million since the foundation’s inception above a decade ago, which was achieved that night. Jennifer Weil of Hinsdale, the mother of a six-year-old child, Alex, who was born with only one ventricle, shared her story with guests.

WORLD WAR II VETERANS DAY PHOTOS BY DANIEL GARCIA
The eighth-grade class at Hinsdale Middle School (HMS) participated in World War II day to culminate its unit on the same subject on Feb. 20. The HMS jazz band and choir performed for the guests, and students rotated through break-out sessions hosted by six World War II veterans, a weapons collector, a memorabilia expert and two grandparents of eighth-grade students who shared stories of their time as children growing up in wartime England and Belgium. Magda Brown, an Holocaust survivor, ended the day with a moving and memorable account of her experience.

DIVEHEART IN DEPTH
SERVICE ABOVE SELF Hinsdale Central’s Jackson Steigbigel and Connor Devine join forces with Diveheart to help children, veterans and disabled PHOTO BY DANIEL GARCIA
“Service above self” can be rare in the world, but two young high-school students from Hinsdale are setting an example for their peers and the community every month when they volunteer to help children, veterans and others with disabilities experience the freedom of zero-gravity and scuba-therapy through the Downers Grove-based non-profit Diveheart. Jackson and Connor always approach their volunteer work at Diveheart with a smile on their faces. Their kindness, consideration and empathy when helping Diveheart participants with disabilities is refreshing to observe. Their patience and workmanlike attitudes inspire volunteers of all ages who surround them at the Diveheart Scuba Experience programs. “These young men, with their humility and earnest approach to service, give us great hope that the future of our community and the humanity that contributes to its success… is in good hands,” said Jim Elliott, founder and president of Diveheart. JACKSON, WHAT GOT YOU INTERESTED IN SCUBA-DIVING WITH DIVEHEART?
My first dive was when I was ten [years old], in a pool on vacation. I was hooked. I loved the feeling and wanted to do it again. About two years later, I became PADI-certified and went diving a couple of times. At 15, I was extremely lucky to be get the opportunity to help out at Diveheart. At the time, I knew very little about the organization, but
60

after my first time there, I knew that this was the perfect place for me. The people at Diveheart are incredible, their knowledge about scuba-diving is limitless, and their passion to help others enjoy the sport is inspiring. They have taught me so many things; not just scuba-diving, but being able to do things that you thought you couldn’t. The thing that makes Diveheart special is, they focus on what you can do, rather than what you can’t. They have countless programs over the U.S. helping anyone they can. You also do not need to be a certified diver to volunteer at Diveheart. There are a number of opportunities that one can volunteer for, but if you are interested, you can become certified through Diveheart. CONNOR, IS THIS YOUR FIRST EXPERIENCE WITH SCUBA-DIVING?
No; I was certified several years ago, and have been on two [diving] trips before, [in] Turks & Caicos and Grand Cayman with my family. My whole family is certified. I also did my certification dives [at] Haigh Quarry in Kankakee. My interest in Diveheart started a year ago, because I needed service hours at Nazareth Academy. It looked intriguing, because I like scuba-diving and thought it would be fun. Now I go every month with Jackson, just because I enjoy doing it and helping out others. It is really cool to see the smile on people’s faces when they get in the water. To read more about Jackson Steigbigel and Connor Devine’s scuba diving story, please visit www.HinsdaleMag.com.

local professional athlete is seeking to advance his career after recovering from an ACL injury he suffered two seasons ago. Djordje Mihailovic, 20, a native of southwest suburban Lemont, grew up playing soccer on a field his father Aleks furnished for him after purchasing an adjacent property. A former professional soccer player himself, Aleks encouraged his son to play the sport from a very young age. “As soon as I could start walking, my dad probably put a ball on my foot, and I just started dribbling it,” Mihailovic said. Mihailovic committed himself to the game, and used his spacious yard to his advantage. “Every day after school, every day, every night, I would be in the backyard trying to improve something, or just play for fun,” he said. “Just always being with the ball obviously helps development as a young player. I think that my parents doing that, I was really grateful for that.” At roughly six years of age, Mihailovic started on his

Mihailovic competed with the Blast until he was 14, when he progressed to the Chicago Fire Academy. “I think I owe what I am today, because of my time with my dad’s club,” he said. “If it wasn’t for playing for the Blast, I wouldn’t have been a professional soccer player.” Several years after commencing with the Fire academy, Mihailovic’s hometown team drafted him in 2017 at just 18 years of age. “I was definitely honored,” he said. ... “It’s special to play for a team that I supported throughout my whole life. I was a fan of [the] Chicago Fire, and for them to see me as a player that could contribute to the first team is something that I’ll always have.” But in the team’s final playoff game at the end of the 2017 season, Mihailovic’s burgeoning career took a sudden detour when he suffered an ACL injury.
