Foreword

The passion for Automobiles was overwhelming. In 1965, Late. Dr. K.C.G. Verghese took teaching assignments in Automobile Engineering subjects and was coaching students for British Automobile Examination as well. It was at this phase he knew he was all set for his own venture; and in 1966 Hindustan Engineering Training Centre (HETC) commenced operations as an institute. HETC later became Hindustan Institute of Engineering and Technology (HIET) and its reputation was high amongst foreign countries than India. Students from Sri Lanka, the African continent, the Gulf countries, Singapore and Malaysia gradually, yet steadily, opted for HIET. This irresistible quest for knowledge slowly paved way for the commencement of other Institutions under Hindustan Group of Institutions (HGI).

hile I contemplate the transformation of Hindustan since its humble inception in 1985, I was absolutely spellbound on the remarkable milestone and growth this institution has attained. Hindustan has been nurturing young minds for over 3 decades offering quality education with unified aim true to the motto of the Founder-Chairman, Dr. K. C. G. Verghese, “To Make Every Man A Success And No Man A Failure.” It felt fantastic to be entrenched and creating a new edition with such verve and passion.

Our team has worked fervently to bring out the exhilarating compilation of events and achievements of the academic year 2018-19. In addition to this, we have a wonderful collection of articles authored by the then final year students on varied themes that would certainly amuse you. I’m sure you would enjoy reading the magazine as much as we did in making it!

Education is the premise of progress, in every society, in every family” this quote by Nobel Peace Laureate Kofi Annan is very inspiring and gives a sense of fulfilment for all involved in the field of education. Hindustan Institute of Technology & Science treads with determination and commitment for three decades on the well laid out path by the late Founder Chairman Dr. KCG Verghese.

I feel happy to note that HITS has continued to excel in all fields; and during the last academic year 2018-19 it witnessed innumerable accomplishments by the staff and students.

towards quality education, NBA has accredited five undergraduate Engineering programmes namely, Aeronautical, Automobile, Computer Science, Civil and Mechanical; and NIRF 2019 has rated HITS in 95th position in India under Engineering Category. In the global arena QS i Gauge rated HITS with an overall Gold, and in QS BRICS Ranking HITS was ranked in 301-350 band among the World Universities. HITS has been bestowed with the Institute of the Year for Higher Education-South, award at the 12th ASSOCHAM Summit and IEN Higher Education Award as the University of the Year during the 7th Higher Education Summit.

Students are a great asset of our institution and their success is attributed to their hard work and persistence in achieving their goals.

It is heartening to note that HITS students have brought several accolades and many laurels and even gained entry into India Book of Records for their projects Jaihind 1S, Light Weight Satellite and Jhatayu, Asia’s First Flying Bike. It’s a matter of pride that with a view towards globalization HITS has provided the platform for students and staff to participate in semester exchange programmes and pursue research projects with partner institutions overseas.

Services to the society have been one of the primary goals of our educational institution.

Hindustan has always been in the forefront to reach out to the needy and lend a helping hand in times of crisis that arise due to natural calamities.

HITS formed a team of volunteers under banner “Hindustan for Kerala and Tamil Nadu” and emergency supplies in kind, cash and services were rendered to the flood victims of both the states for their rehabilitation.

I am proud to note that HITS has proved its worth and mettle in academics, extracurricular activities and philanthropy. The concerted and committed efforts of the entire Hindustan fraternity have enabled this institution to scale greater and newer heights and achieve laurels in all spheres of its activities.

modest beginning of HITS way back in 1985, brings reminiscence of Late Dr. K.C.G. Verghese, a visionary, whose heart wept to introduce technical education to the young aspirants in India. Since then HITS has come a long way in making quality education affordable to all. We trust that to accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also dream; not only plan, but also believe. Every year HITS has been outwitting itself in performances which are recognized and honoured with several accolades. he academic year 2018-19 has brought several awards and accolades.

We have improved the rankings in the Engineering category in National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) to 95th position.

Five undergraduate programmes viz, Aeronautical Engineering, Automobile Engineering, Computer Science Engineering, Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering have been accredited by the National Board of Accreditation under the Tier 1 category.

The QS Bricks Rankings, QS I-Gauge Rating, “Institute of the Year for Higher EducationSouth,” “IEN Higher Education,” “Best Education Brands 2018” awards, recording entries into India Book of Records for innovative projects, are a few other notable awards. The contributions of the faculty and students and other staff in bringing these laurels to this institution is remarkable.

The improvement in the teaching learning process by implementing several academic reforms, involvement of the faculty and students in carrying out research and dissemination of the same through publication in indexed journals, the involvement of the students in various extracurricular and cocurricular activities in the socially relevant projects, participation of the industry in the academic activities are the real mantras for this great achievement. The University Magazine “HCELLENCE 2019” will give glimpses of our achievements and strategic steps to achieve the same. Distinguished Scientist, ISRO & Director, Tamil Nadu State Council for Science & Technology I’m thrilled to be here at Hindustan on a very apt day wherein we celebrate National Science Day commemorating the invention of Raman Effect by Sir C. V. Raman, the renowned Indian physicist and Nobel laureate. Befitting to the theme of Science Day 'Science for People and People for Science', we are fortunate to have the award ceremony of Hindustan Innovation Challenge 2018-19. While appreciating the participating teams, I emphasize the importance of perseverance and focus in the path of innovation. Great innovators of the world lived in the same world of a common man; what made them great was the power of observation! I wish the young students to pursue challenging careers and also uphold moral responsibilities aiding our nation fly high.

Glad to address a session on “Make Success the Way of Life!” Our social world is essentially made up of two kinds of people: the good and bad. As much as good people are viewed for their positive role and contribution to the society, the bad ones are seen as the liability or hindrances for social development. To be a successful person in one’s respective field, it is mandatory to develop five key criteria—physical strength, mental strength, emotional strength, financial strength and spiritual strength. All these five criteria are the fulcrum for transforming oneself into a successful person.

The term “Success” though a cliché, has its own power and thrill. Success is not an absence of problem, but one’s ability to overcome it. I wish my young students at Hindustan the very best for their successful and dazzling future!

Hindustan for Kerala (H4K) The catastrophic damage caused by the recent floods due to unprecedented rains in Kerala had made a call to the conscience of the nation. The Hindustan Group of Institutions (HGI), Chennai, was at the forefront involving themselves in relief measures lending helping hand to the victims and trying to restore the beauty of God's own country. We collaboratively took various humanitarian initiatives under the banner Hindustan for Kerala (H4K) both in the form of material and monetary contributions.

The Operation H4K was carried out relief consignments in three phases between 25 August and 25 September 2018 in Chengannur, Allappuzha, Thrissur, Kottayam, and Ranni, the major towns severely devastated by the flash floods. The unparalleled enthusiasm and dedications shown by students and faculty reflected in the voluntary services and substantial donations they made in the form of essential relief commodities. Around 50 lakhs rupees were spent on items such as nutritional consumptions, imperishable food comprising 5500 kg of rice, 1000 kg of dhal varieties, 200 kg of flour, biscuits; kitchenware essentials such as gas stoves, utensils, and dosa pans; over 1300 sanitizing wares and toiletries; blankets, towels, bed sheets, pillows and buckets; survival essentials including mosquito repellent, coils, candles, match boxes, first aid kits etc. H4K relief team also visited the flood ravaged colonies in the vicinity, expressed their solidarity with its victims, and extended helping hands.

Hindustan Group of Institutions has maintained their mission to those in distress in times of humanitarian grief and crisis. We thank all our contributors for their service and donations towards this noble act of kindness.

Hindustan for Tamil Nadu Cyclonic Storm Gaja was the fifth named cyclone of the 2018 Indian Ocean cyclone season. Gaja made a huge trail of destruction in the districts of Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Pudukottai, Dindigul, Trichy, Karur, Sivaganga, Ramanathapuram, Cuddalore in Tamil Nadu and Karaikal in the Union territory of Puducherry. At least 50 people were killed, over 100 cattle and 600 goats were also killed in the cyclone. About 250,000 people were evacuated to relief camps. More than 117,000 houses, including thatched huts and tiled roof houses were damaged.

As a mark of our solidarity with the victims of Gaja cyclone, and expression of condolences, Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science and Dr. K.C.G. Verghese Foundation made a monetary contribution worth Rs.25 lakhs towards the Chief Minister Relief Fund for expediting the process of relief work and restoring normalcy to the victims.

Celebrations Christmas

"The celebration of a ray of light, the divine birth in manger, and glory of God is Christmas in essence."

14 December 2018 marked the day of celebration with Mr. Sadhu Chellappa, Founder, Agni Ashram, Chennai as the Chief Guest. In his message, Mr. Chellappa correlated Christmas and gifts: “The joy is all about gifts . . . Let us gift an enemy, forgiveness; an opponent, tolerance; a friend, our heart; to all, charity; to every child, a good example; and to ourselves, respect!” The mellifluous choir rendition of carols praising the exaltation of the Lord accompanied by orchestra, dance forms from Hindustan International School got appreciations from all. With gleeful entry of Santa Claus wishing “Merry Christmas” and a “Happy New Year,” and “Silent Night” sung, the celebrations came to a denouement. th

World Theatre Day

On 27 March 2019, Athena’s Masquerade Theatre Club – one of the English Literary Clubs of the Department of Languages celebrated the World Theatre Day “Above & Beyond” - a sojourn through drama inviting more than 450 students, teachers and theatre lovers. Ms. Shaan Katari Libby, Advocate and Committee Member of A to Zee Creativity was the Chief Guest of the event. Crea-Shakthi, a leading theatre production in Chennai, trained 30 students of Masquerade club on the nuances of theatre for 30 weeks finally acclaiming to present a full-fledged triple production show in three different acts namely, “The Prisoners,” “Return of the Queen,” and “Anima Verto.” on World Theatre Day.

Pongal

Pongal Celebration 2019 gathered students, teaching and nonteaching staff decked in traditional attire for preparing sweet pongal in new earthen pots with all religious rights and special Pooja performed on 15 January 2019 at Open Air Theatre. Traditional games like Uriadi, and also Lemon in the spoon, Musical Chair, and Folk dances rose the spirit of Pongal celebration. Bullock cart ride drew interest of large number of gathering and made the ride memorable. Celebration came to a fine closure with tempting Pongal and pieces of sugarcane distributed.

The 70th Republic Day was celebrated with great fervour in all its solemnity, grandeur and respect on 26 January 2019. The NCC Cadets performed a brilliant march-past and reported to the dais followed by hoisting of the National Flag by Dr. K P Isaac, Vice Chancellor, HITS. All the Deans, HoDs, staff and students of HITS gave a salute to the national flag with pride and took a pledge to uphold honor, integrity, diversity and the uniqueness of our country. The chief guest at the event Wg. Cdr. M. National Science Day

'Science for People and People for Science' formed the theme of National Science Day celebrated on 28 February 2019 commemorating the invention of Raman Effect by Sir C. V. Raman, the renowned Indian physicist and Nobel laureate. Padmasri. Dr. Mayilswamy Annadurai, Distinguished Scientist, ISRO and Director, Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology, while presiding over the function voiced, “Great innovators of the world lived in the same world of a common man; what made them great was the power of observation!” It was befitting to the theme of Science Day, for having the award ceremony of Hindustan Innovation Challenge 2018-19.

The 13th Founder’s Memorial Day was observed on 14 February 2019. Homage to Late Dr. K.C.G. Verghese, Founder-Chairman, Hindustan Group of Institutions (HGI) was paid by Principals, Deans, Heads, Faculty and Students from all Hindustan Group of Institutions, and distinguished invitees with due benevolence and respect for the person. A video compiling the legacy of over 5 decades of journey of HGI brought scintillating admiration to the Founder and his accomplishment in building HGI, the huge edifice of education.

The event captured the release of “Dr. KCG Verghese Charitable Foundation Newsletter” by Dr. Mrs.Elizabeth Verghese, whose first copy was received by the Chief Guest, Dr. T.S. Sridhar, IAS, Additional Chief Secretary/Commissioner of Revenue Administration and State Relief Commissioner (Retd.), Govt. of Tamil Nadu.

The International Women’s Day 2019 was celebrated for a week with a lot of enthusiasm and involvement from students and staff. Several competitions were conducted to commemorate the celebrations including Rangoli, Digital Poster, PPT, Cooking without Fire, Debate for Staff and Students which incited fervent participation from all. Ms. Jayashree Mitra, Senior Vice President, Standard Charted Bank, Chennai presided over the main celebration held on 7 March 2019 as the Chief Guest and distributed prize for the winners of competitions.

University Day

University Day celebrated on 5 April 2019 was an apt forum to award students and staff achievers under various categories such as academics, research, innovation, alumni, voluntary services, sports. A total of 300 student awards and 20 staff awards were given by HITS in recognition of hard work and commitment. Prof. Dr. K.K. Aggarwal, Chairman, National Board of Accreditation, New Delhi and Mr. Robert G. Burgess, US Consul General, Chennai graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and the Guest of Honour. Mr. Robert G. Burgess acknowledged the long association between HITS and the USA Consulate in Chennai and lauded HITS for its stupendous achievements. Prof. Dr. K.K. Aggarwal in his address urged students to seek learning experiences by reaching beyond the boundary of one’s core subject and develop interdisciplinary approach to become great problem solvers.

YARONA

Fiesta, Hindustan’s Freshers’ Day was celebrated for Engineering, Architecture, and Liberal Arts on 25 and 26 October 2018 to welcome newcomers in a friendly atmosphere and avoid social evils. Mr. Karthik Thirunarayanan, Director, ORACLE Solutions Engineering, Chennai and Mr. Mathi Ezhil Arasu, Vice President – Clear Steps, Principal Consultant, Trainer & Quality Advisor, Chennai presided as Chief Guests. FIESTA had cultural events starting with dance, mime, and musical performances by the various Freshers’ teams. The auditorium reverberated with the echoes of the music and filled the air with joy to the Freshers’ dance, mime, and musical performances.

Delight for the heart, mind and soul!

A vibrant and humongous inter-departmental cultural fest “YARONA 2019” was hosted on 29 and 30 March 2019. Around 250 student volunteers and 210 faculties were actively involved in successfully organizing YARONA 2019. The celebration saw a huge contingent of cultural troupes numbering about 423 teams and 1647 (Boys 846, Girls 801) representations under 47 events such as Indian & Western Solo/Group Dance, Vocals, Street Play, Solo/Duet Dance, Clash of Bands, Western Music Group, Rap & Beat Boxing, Instrumentals, Adzap, Mime, Mimicry, Stand-up Comedy, Face Painting, Junk Art, Puddle Jumper, Watermelon Mania, Cinematic Events such as Lights Camera Action, Groove on Beats, Diehard Fan, etc., Woofer ON with Dance, Rain Dance, Treasure Hunt, DJ War, Super Human, Full of Hot Air, Don’t Blow the Kings, etc., that were held concurrently at nine different venues.

Veteran experts in their respective fields and senior Professors contributed hugely in adjudging the winners of this magnificent event. Based on the overall scores, the results were prepared and sent to the prize distribution committee. Mr. Ashok Verghese, the Director, HITS honoured the valedictory function held at the Main Ground in the evening and declared the result for YARONA 2019 cultural competitions.

The Chief Guest for the event was Mr. Haricharan, Playback Singer whose captivating live performance enthralled the audience. The Overall Championship and Rolling Trophy was conferred on the School of Science and Humanities. Department of Aeronautical Engineering bagged the Runner Up trophy.

Choose France Tour 2019

Campus France, Chennai (French Embassy) organized a one-day event Choose France Tour on 31 January 2019 where brainstorming sessions on “Electric Vehicles and Smart Mobility” and “Smart Cities” and Education Fair were organized. Acknowledging the quote, the Headway Foundation in association with HITS and Chennai OMR Club of Y’s Men International organized an event entitled “Rendezvous with Dr. Kamal Haasan” at the latter’s auditorium on 25 January 2019. The event was primarily scheduled to commemorate International Day of Persons with Disabilities. Mrs. Raghavi Senthil Kumar, Founder, Headway Foundation; and President,Tamil Nadu Wheelchair Basketball Association and also a proud alumna of HITS presided over the function.

Fondly called ‘uzhaghanayagan’ (Universal Hero), Dr. Kamal Hassan is idealized in Tamil Nadu for his theatrical skills and moves to the sensational rhythms. This most celebrated person has stepped in to Politics recently and has committed himself to serve the public through Makkal Needhi Maiyam roughly translated as People's Justice Centre. In his address to the youth of Hindustan, Haasan identified the future of nation in their hands. He voiced, "Honesty can only be found amongst youngsters; and that is why I chose college as a platform to speak Politics, though controversial. Youngsters certainly lay the foundation for future. I thereby request you to hold on to your rights to vote and never sell them for bribe. Speaking of the differently abled, I have never pitied them for their disabilities; rather only awed, as how they could keep the winning stride high irrespective of their differences from others. They surely are a record of my inspiration!” Dr. KCG Verghese Charitable Foundation believes in empowering persons with disabilities; and ensures inclusiveness and equality to them. In act of appreciation and recognition, the Foundation presented a cheque for Rs. 6 lakhs to Tamil Nadu Wheelchair Basketball Association. This monetary contribution could promisingly be invested to procure efficient Wheel Chairs working on latest technology.

A Mere Driver!

It is a common misconception that Formula 1 drivers are merely drivers and not athletes.

Formula 1 drivers’ leisure time activities consist of marathons, triathlons, mountain biking, trekking, etc. These drivers are required to have great stamina, strength, and very low body fat percentage. For every kilo of extra weight, the driver loses 0.035 seconds of time per lap (which is a lot in racing terms). Drivers drive literally at neck-breaking speeds, due to which they have to do special neck workouts to keep their necks strong. They experience around 6.5 G’s of force (which is equivalent to the amount of G force a fighter pilot experiences during battle). In the process of driving 300 kilometres for around 100 minutes, drivers lose around 4 kilograms of body weight and around 3 kilograms of water content from their body. This is excluding the 3 free practice sessions and the qualifying session that takes place before the race. On top of all these, they have around 20-25 buttons and toggles in their steering wheels which they have to use while traveling at speeds of around 350km/h.

Formula 1 drivers are really underrated when compared to other athletes. They are an embodiment of people with the quickest reaction times, fittest bodies, and the sharpest minds. Yet, people tend to say, “They are just drivers who drive fast”.

Each student has a passion which can sometimes be their goal or dream. This deep engraved passion that is inspired by role models, would make the person sleepless until attained. They act in craziest ways in this wave of passion. When a student joins college, he seeks opportunities to make friends with similar ideas and tries to expand work. While some flourish, others remain in the edge of the shadows due to the lack of finance or proper alliance. The passion, however, finds its way at one point or the other in future. Passion can sometimes have no relation with the education being persuaded by the student. In this type of scenario the student lacks time and fails to manage or cope with his studies and passion. This imbalance can lead to lose one's concentration and more over interest in life. Thus, proper planning of time to achieve one's passion must be done wisely to attain success.

Eclipses have always been bounded with myths, legends and superstitions Are Superstitions on throughout history. Even in today's era, the Eclipses Real? same age-old myths and superstitions are things that still persist. Both lunar and solar eclipses are considered as a bad omen or a sign of danger and chaos in many cultures.

But on the other hand, according to science, "Superstitions are Super Stupid" and "Eclipses are just shadows", nothing but celestial bodies blocking light. This is a natural phenomenon and has nothing to do with the beliefs that are made on murderous pets, hungry demons or a famished jaguars. Like, in some parts of world it is believed that the spirits of dead people had taken the form of ravenous jaguars and causing slaughter. So, the dogs are made to howl and bark in a bid to scare them off. Similarly, in Indian culture, the myth is based on the belief that the eclipses caused by the demons Rahu and Ketu swallowing the sun as a revenge from the Gods to stifle the light that provides life. Some strange superstitions on eclipses include 'Eating during eclipse period causes indigestion', 'Cutting yourself at the time of eclipse leaves the mark for a lifetime', ‘Taking bath after the eclipses will wash away all the negative energies ', and for a pregnant women it is 'use of sharp objects might lead the baby to be born cleft lip.' But if these superstitions were real, why other organisms who do not follow rules have not faced problems? Clearly, that’s not happening. They are at times confused and scared during eclipses but they go back to normalcy after eclipses.

People tend to see eclipses with naked eye out of curiosity and hence exposing to direct sunlight or a fraction of which other organisms do not. This might be the reason behind such beliefs like stay inside.

ROAD RAGE Road rage is the aggressive behavior of drivers which lead to altercations, collisions and assaults. A major cause of road rage is the sloppy driving habits of modern day drivers who drives in haste. Violent incidents caused by stress while driving on high traffic zones is also a reason for this. It is found that most of the drivers have this rage because it is like a cultural norm. They grew up seeing their parents and other people who share the road doing the same. Anxiety and frustration comes naturally when you drive in Indian roads. It has been confirmed by National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) that Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra are top five states with hot-headed drivers and maximum number of cases under rash driving/road rage. It takes very little effort to come to a complete stop at stop signs, to use turn signals properly and to be more observant and cautious. So the next time let us not panic while driving. One thoughtful decision can save your life and also others'.

If you’re serious about getting better on something, then one of the steps is to know in black and white terms-where you stand. You need self-awareness before you can achieve self-improvement. For most of us, the path to self-improvement starts by setting a specific and actionable goal. There are many different self-help programmes; each with its own focus, techniques, associated, proponents and in some

cases leaders. Those who help themselves by learning and identifying about health problems can be said to exemplify self-help, while self-help groups can be seen more as peer to peer support.

The Ugly Tree

Long, long ago, in a dense forest there were thousands of tall and beautiful trees. They were happy, and too proud of themselves. Among them, there also was an ugly tree whose branches were badly twisted. Its roots had uneven curves. All other trees made fun of the ugly tree and kept giggling. “How are you, hunchback?” the other trees always shouted and their laughter made the ugly tree feel sad. But, he never raised a voice against them.

The ugly tree thought, “I wish I were as beautiful as the other trees. Why did God do this to me? Neither can I provide shade to the travellers not can the birds make their nests on me. Nobody needs me.”

One day, a woodcutter came to the forest. He took a look at the trees and said, “These trees are lovely. I must cut them. As soon as he picked up his axe the trees became frightened. ‘Chop, Chop, Chop’ went the woodcutter’s axe and one by one the trees started to fall. “None of us is going to be spared,” screamed one of the beautiful trees. Soon that tree too was brought to ground by the woodcutter’s axe. By now, the woodcutter had come near to the ugly tree. He had just raised his axe when suddenly he noticed how crooked the ugly tree was. “Hmm! This crooked tree seems to be useless for me. I cannot make long straight logs of this ugly tree,” he thought. And he moved towards another beautiful tree. The ugly tree heaved a huge sigh of relief. He realized that by making him ugly, God had actually given him a boon. From that day the ugly tree neither complained nor felt ashamed of itself. He was happy with his crooked branches. He never forgot how he was spared from the woodcutter’s axe, only because he was crooked and ugly. Thus did the ugly tree learnt the most beautiful lesson of its life as how to love and value oneself.

We face several difficulties in life so we become stronger day by day. I strongly believe the phrase "NOT ALRIGHT, BUT, IT'S ALRIGHT". There are always certain things that cannot be explained until experienced. Whenever there are difficult times we tend to face them with courage; but there are times when we don't have courage too. Everyone has ups and downs which are part and parcel of life. In my experience, the worst times were when I wasn't able to gather my courage when people around me, whom I cherished, started vanishing. That was the moment when I tried gathering my courage to face the world where people hide their feeling behind a mask. Not everything that happens in our lives disappear with time. Maybe time helps to overcome our wounds, but it always will leave a memory.

These memories help us to overcome similar problems in future. Not everything that happens in our life is right, but it's alright. Each time when difficulties are faced, remember, "after sun set, there always is a sunrise." There is always a light that is ahead of us. Believe in and move on!

Music is the best way to express feelings. For me, “life without music is a body without soul.” Everyone has a soulmate, but only few recognize it. An art or a habit or an interest that motivates us the real soulmate. Painting, dancing, swimming, writing, playing and there are many more. All these are not just extra-curricular activities, they are the real soulmates which can boost up energy.

If I became the Educational Minister, I would implement a rule of compulsory activity section based on kid’s interest. Many may not find close affinity with non-living things; especially musical instruments. But I’m on the contrary. To me, most essential values come from music; and I find mine in Piano. I’ve seen my best and worst of times with my piano and it’s my soulmate and life. I don’t care people saying that Piano is just a substance... I don’t care people saying music should be just an entertainment… I don’t care people saying Piano is a waste of expenses… I don’t care because…

EDUCATION STANDARDS IN INDIA

Unlike public educational institutions, the private schools and colleges are known for imparting quality education. However, contrarily the most serious flaw one can find in the private institutions is their overextended study period. This would have negative impact on students’ concentration level after certain period. Usually students yearn for refreshment break to remain active and retain their concentration level; but these private schools do not have these kinds of recess and hence all the concepts are not completely understood by the students.

Another loophole of the private institute is their obsession with ranking and image-build-up exercise at the cost of genuine emphasis on the quality education. Parents are lured by the ranks published by them and the institutions habitually take up excess number of students as a result there is a compromise over genuine teacher-students interactions. The need for curriculum based moral education, communication skills and skill development are underemphasized by these institutions. As a result, the growth of students’ natural creativity and academic stimulation are adversely hampered. In the end, it is neither the teacher nor the administration but the students found at the receiving end. At times, when the students have trouble in coping up such systems they tend to resort to the extreme measure such as committing suicide. Life is for living, and let's hope change would bloom someday.

A team of fourteen members went to Dallas, Texas to participate in Aero Design West 2017 under the leadership of Gladston Joseph (passed out student) and Mr. Dalbir Singh, Faculty Advisor. The team worked hard for eight months for a 3-day competition between 11 and 13 of March 2017. We cleared the inspection round and moved up to flying round. In flying round, our aircraft flew at height of 123ft, and dropped the payload which successfully landed. This excelled the judges and the team got overall placed 3rd in the world. As a part of this exciting journey, we also got an opportunity to visit Universal Studios, Florida. It was quite a memorable and a thrilling winning experience.

I observed that their education is not only theoretical but also practical with first-hand training given to the aspirants of Aviation. Besides education, I also got chance to experience the cultural aspects of France. It was completely different, new, and adventures too. I loved the place, the people and of course, the stunning Eiffel Tower!

Late night musings got him deluded enough to begin writing. He let himself get carried away with the words. He tore down pages as their lines got filled with words that he otherwise wouldn’t let free.

He travelled to a far-away land where there were no boundaries.

No boundaries separating countries and no boundaries separating the ocean from the land. No walls, no floors and no ceilings. He could feel the wind crashing against his body, for in this land he was the only obstacle. He could hear the wind racing to find its way home, violently whipping off droplets from the ocean. And he was there, he was there watching the sky become the sea. He was there when the sea reflected the myriad lights of the sky. For in this world the sky was not just blue sometimes and dark sometimes, it was all of the colors he couldn’t name. He felt like a little boy again.

He felt free. He dove in and swam till the edge of the ocean. The ocean formed ripples as if to track his movements, for he shouldn’t get lost.

This world existed for him.

This was the world that existed in him.

Bounce Back From Failures Failure is a word which nobody wants to hear. People think failure is the end of their life; but it is not. Aariana Huffington has rightly told, “Failure is the stepping stone to success.” If a person fails, he shouldn’t quit but learn through mistakes and overcome them in next attempts. Even great people over came their failures through persistent efforts. Success doesn’t come to you in a single try. So, develop an improved plan and give your best to achieve it. If you can’t handle the situation don’t hesitate to share it with your parents or elders who could give you a piece of advice and support in your rough phase. Sometimes you might get humiliated, but never get depressed, take it as a challenge and prove them as wrong. Be with positive people who could help you to pass through the scariest phase of your life. You can also indulge yourself in reading success stories of great personalities like Abraham Lincoln, Albert Einstein, J.K Rowling, Bill Gates who failed several times before achieving success. Patience is also one of the factors to be developed in order to achieve your dreams. Nothing is most valuable than your beautiful life. Taking a right decision at present may not change your past; but definitely your future. Always believe in yourself and never lose hope. Your desire to achieve success is what makes you motivated. There is no such thing called failure, give your best and succeed in the following trials.

Just hold on— ‘on dreams’, ‘on people’, and even ‘on places’.

Letting go is the easiest; and yes, one day you might even have to let go the things that stop you from being you.

Be passionate, be delusional, show gratitude, and be compassionate.

Love, not only the answered but also the unrequited.

Poverty - a punishment for a crime you didn’t commit Poverty is

not just a problem of our country, it is a global issue. It is of immense importance that this issue is discussed world wide. Globally, around 600 million children live in extreme poverty. When families don’t have enough money they cannot invest in their children to buy food or clothes. It curbs kids from going to school, involves in child or forced marriage, sexual exploitation, trafficking, hazardous or exploitative work. History has witnessed social reformers who passionately worked for the welfare of society. Mother Teresa is widely known for her compassion and unconditioned love towards humanity. It may sound impractical to eradicate poverty; yet, if each of us take simple measures and steps in helping the needy, we can certainly witness tremendous changes that are steady.

Let’s not wait for another Mother Teresa to be born and become an icon of love and charity. Let’s become one!

Eat to Live Healthy!

Eat, eat and eat! Nowadays, many teens are overweight and unfit. Surveys have found out that more and more young people suffer from obesity, damaging their health. Therefore, stop eating too much! It not only helps your appearance, but also monitors health.

Lack of sport is a major problem causing teenagers overweight without consumption of calories. As a result, one gets fatter and fatter. Unfortunately, most young people love playing video games and computer rather than tying their sports lace and getting on field. Another reason could be due to high content of calories in the diet. Consuming too much calories is also harmful as they get deposited in blood vessels causing fat bodies and heart diseases.

To youngsters under stress at school and college, eating candies, chewing gums, or munching on a snack is a common method to relieve pressure. However, it is unwise because candies and snack doom you to gain weight easily and cause sluggishness. The golden rule, “keep uptake always greater than the intake!” is the only solution to the problem of obese. Involving in active sports is yet another powerful solution irrespective of all ages.

so. Only few embrace the beauty of it. Here is the short description of how I evolved myself form the situation where I can’t walk out for a movie or a meal without a friend, to the person who travelled all the way from Chennai to Himalayas alone and spent a week in that fairy land.

It all started two years ago.

Number of questions circled as “Where should I go?”, “Is it safe to go there?”, “How can I manage a new language?” And finally, “Is it a good idea to travel alone?” With mixed feelings, I made up my mind and started my first solo trip a journey to Himalayas. A journey which made me fearless, a decision maker, an interactive person, and enabled me to discover a new version of myself. When the bus entered into Himachal border it became necessary for me to get up from sleep and put on my sweater since the temperature was dipping down gradually for every mile we move forward. It was around 4:30 in the morning I woke up and realised that 12 hours of my journey was completed and 4 more hours left to reach my destination. Yes, it was a long 16 hours ride on the bumpiest, narrow and condemned roads that you can never find anywhere. Let aside all practical difficulty, Himalayas has its own allure with snow-capped mountainous ranges, water streams, rounded rocks, tall green trees, momentary rains and snowy air. Wherever you see you just can’t stop keeping your jaw opened. GREEN . . . GREEN . . .

GREEN . . . ! It was green everywhere. Looks like all the greenery in this world came here for some kind of get together party. Such is the beauty of Himachal!

There might be many things that keep holding you back like fear of unknown or feeling home sick. But I swear, with one solo journey, you will overcome every fear of yours. Life isn’t just what you know and what you see. There is much more than what you think. Stretch your limits, experience every bit, and keep exploring!

Bright Side of Dark Truth Optimism makes us realize the power of ourselves. It keeps us charged to break boundaries and achieve new pinnacle. Optimism gives a new perception to life. An optimistic person can never fail, it’s not because he is immune to failure, but he knows the trajectory of success through failure.

One such King lived years ago, who was an epitome of optimism. There was a beautiful, prosperous land surrounded by mountains, forests, seas and valleys. It was such a picturesque and captivating location, but ironically none wanted to rule it. This was owing to the mishaps faced by earlier emperors on the throne. The place was secluded and people were in dare need for a ruler. Then started a vigorous search for an emperor to take up responsibility. But the news of mishap was spread like fire and so none wanted to risk their life.

There came up a young man smart and courageous, who wished to take up responsibility of a King. The people were shocked as well as pleased to hear this. On curious of this, an old man decided to visit the boy and talk to him on this matter. The old man in a hesitant tone asked, “Dear young boy, in spite of knowing about the dark truth hidden behind this shimmery throne, why do you even think of giving it a chance?” The boy replied with a smile, “Yes, I know it isn’t easy, but achieving the harder thing makes me happy.” Hearing this the old man felt he should remind the boy the dark truth, and said, "My little boy, I understand your excitement, but believe me this throne is sinned, anybody who becomes the emperor is either dead in 10 years of his crowning or must live his rest of life in extremely dangerous forest, which also means death after few days of exile. So, I don’t want young boy like you, who has an opportunity to explore and live joyfully, to risk your life.” The young boy was overwhelmed by the old man’s concern and thanked him saying, “I am lucky to have someone like you to advice me, but believe me the problem is in perception of the issue.”

The old man saw his confidence and couldn’t tell anything more, blessed the boy and left. The boy soon was coronated. He was courageous, kind hearted emperor, who soon transformed the territory into a flourishing Kingdom. People were extremely happy and enjoyed a joyous life. As years passed, a decade rule of the King was on its termination and people started panicking and had insecurities about the mishap. They doubted if the King would die while on throne or decide to leave the dynasty and pursue an equally dreadful life. Soon the King gathered all people and informed his decision to choose exile. People were in shock and they questioned him about the risk involved in forest life. The King optimistically said,“There is always two sides to a coin and I want to focus the positive.” He also asked the people to come along with him to drop him at the forest. With pale faces and eyes filled with fear they accepted to come along. Soon their fiery faces glowed with delight and excitement seeing a humongous paradise. The King then explained, “It was my perception of the dark truth. Every problem comes with a solution, its just a ability to identify that matters. I can’t live if I am on throne neither can I live in forest, but the angle that is unexplored is that I can live and rule a Kingdom, if the forest become the empire. So, this is our new dynasty.” The people were overwhelmed to hear this and applauded the King for his optimism and perception to a tricky problem. Then on the King and people lived happily devoid of all fears. They learnt a lesson for life that there is no problem without solution and that being optimistic is a priority to witness the brighter side to the dark truth.

SOLO TRAVEL Many people shy away from travelling alone, some fear it and some love to go but couldn’t dare to do

My First Day at College The bus landed somewhere on the campus. I got down from my bus and noticed the School of Building Science block. Staring here and there, l walked around the college for nearly five minutes and asked a senior student to help me find location of the main block.

The senior in turn asked me ‘Is there main block in our college?’. I was quite shocked and walked on my own direction. At last, after a struggle of ten minutes a kind-hearted senior guided me to the main block and the security enquired my department and guided me to first floor. The faculties just gave an introduction of themselves and told us to introduce ourselves. I was really surprised to see that students from different parts of India wished to study in my college. We spoke with each other and tried to develop friendship.

After the end of last hour, I walked along with my few classmates to the bus way. Unluckily, due to a meeting the driver took the bus half an hour late and it started raining unusually. Due to traffic jam, I reached my home by 7 p.m. I felt tired and exhausted that l didn’t have energy even to explain my first day of college to my parents.

LAUNCH OF SCHOOL OF LAW

The Launch of School of Law sets off the Founder's Day celebrations on 20 June 2019 and earmarks another milestone in history of Hindustan!

Dr. Mrs. Elizabeth Verghese, Chairperson, Hindustan Group of Institutions, in her presidential address expressed her happiness on the new launch and announced that a scholarship of 25% will provided to those students who would like to pursue a course under the School of Law. The Founder’s Day message was delivered by Rev. Isaac Johnson, St. Andrew’s Church, Egmore.

The special address was delivered by Sri. Kasu Venkata Reddy, Former Member of Parliament and Minister, Govt. of Andhra Pradesh. The inaugural address delivered by Hon’ble Justice Abraham Mathew, Judge (Retd.), High Court of Kerala saw an urge made to students to be present in the parliament and legislative assemblies. Further, he pointed that globalization has led to the need of law colleges and insisted on the quality of law education and concluded his speech by declaring the School of Law at Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science “Open”.

The felicitation was delivered by Hon’ble Justice Ramaswamy, Former Judge, Supreme Court; Mr. K. Duraiswamy, Senior Lawyer, High Court, Chennai; and Prof. (Dr.) S. G. Sreejith, Vice Dean, OP Jindal Global Law School.

Dr. K. P. Isaac, Vice Chancellor, HITS on his special note mentioned that the law course provided at HITS is a perfect fusion of technology and law and was certain to attract more number of enrolments.
