President Bill Clinton’s Golf Clubs
More than any other sport, golf plays a vital role in presidential history. Almost all presidents in the past century have been known to hit the links during their time in office – using the green as a stage for politics, a platform to connect with the public, or a respite from the stress of the nation’s top role.
Former President Bill Clinton famously loved golf for each of these reasons, with Golf Advisor citing that “there was no denying his positive impact on the game, if for no other reason than he made it look like so much fun.”
Clinton valued golf so highly that he reinstalled the White House putting green that Richard Nixon had removed. And, according to The Atlantic, Clinton stands out from other golfing presidents as “one of the more enthusiastic players … In his first year in office, Clinton could be heard by all when he exclaimed after a tee shot on the 10th hole on Martha’s Vineyard, ‘Whoa, mama, stay up!’”
The clubs offered were used exclusively by President Clinton during his time at Martha’s Vineyard after his presidency.
These clubs were originally sourced for the 2007 Possible Dreams Auction in Martha’s Vineyard, the annual auction for the island’s largest social services organization, by a Clinton friend and staff member who worked for his administration. Coincidentally, that same person won these clubs at the 2007 auction, maintaining them within his personal collection until now.
These 14 clubs include a limited edition Masters Tournament putter from Augusta that Clinton used to sink a 47-foot put, according to Possible Dreams auctioneers.

16,699 Miles to Ali
Within an event celebrating extraordinary athleticism and tradition, the torch relay for 1996 Summer Olympics boasts an exceptional history all its own. The 1996 Games in Atlanta celebrated the Olympic Centennial, with a torch relay covering 16,699 miles across the United States that included a trek on the Pony Express, a ride on the Union Pacific Railroad – even its first trip into space.
To make each of these historic milestones a reality, 12,467 bearers participated in the relay. This included 2,000 former Olympians or other people somehow linked to the Olympic movement.
The initial journey of the Olympic torch began traditionally in Olympia, Greece. While there, over 800 people carried the torch 1,330 miles across the country, the most extensive in the history of the Games.
The flame then landed at Los Angeles International Airport on April 27, 1996, and was met with a welcome ceremony. The first torchbearer of the American part of the relay, Rafer Johnson, was the final torchbearer at the 1984 Summer Olympics held in Los Angeles.
The torch went on to visit 42 states and 29 state capitals along its journey, and the route was designed to take in as many historically and culturally significant locations as possible. These included Santa Monica Pier, the famous Route 66, passing close to the Grand Canyon and reaching Hoover Dam. It was carried across by Martha Watson and the world’s largest U.S. flag was unfurled across the wall of the dam.
From Las Vegas, the flame was passed onto a special cauldron car on a Union Pacific train, the first of several train journeys. The National Pony Express Association participated in the journey with riders carrying the torch for over 56 continuous hours. Then on June 12, the torch was taken on board a replica of a 19th-century packet boat and pulled for 2 miles by mule along the Erie Canal.
Astronauts even carried the torch into space for the first time, taking an unlit torch with them aboard Space Shuttle Columbia as part of STS-78 – a spacelab mission for the Space Shuttle Program.
Each torch and its bearer were significant for another reason … they all led to a moment that shocked the world.
When the surprise bearer emerged at the end of the relay, people across nations gasped when they saw Muhammad Ali, arguably history’s most iconic athlete. Ali, who had won gold at the 1960 Games in Rome and later developed Parkinson’s disease, lit a mechanical torch that travelled along a wire, lighting the cauldron at the top of a 116-foot tower.
This stunning appearance is remembered as being one of the most inspiring, poignant, and emotional moments in Olympic history. The torch featured here was one part of the journey that led to a moment the world will never forget.

Occupation of Athlete, track star and 7 years as a Lucky Strike smoker. Includes an “Athletes and Cigarettes by Jesse Owens, World-Famous Olympic Track Star” testimonial statement:
Athletes usually take longer to get around to smoking than most people. Maybe that’s the reason why they’re often harder to please once they begin. Take me. I didn’t start smoking until I was 26. Even then I tried a lot of brands before I found the right one. Guess if I’d bought Luckies in the first place I would’ve saved myself a lot of trouble. Trying to explain exactly why I like Luckies, I’m afraid, is as ticklish as telling you why I like track more than, say, basketball or football. I just do. it’s all a matter of taste you might say. I get a kick out of my cleaning business, public relations, golf and helping underprivileged kids, too. Again, personal preference. By the way, Mr. Owens smokes. And one of my three wonderful girls is old enough to smoke, too. They see to it that there’s good taste in my home. And their taste, like mine, runs to Luckies every time. I guess to all of us Luckies taste better.

The Seven Falls Babe Ruth Collection
On the most American of holidays, America’s biggest sports hero – Babe Ruth – traveled to Colorado Springs with business manager, Ray Doan, to wow massive crowds of fans with his prodigious talent.
Now retired, the Yankees legend arrived on the Fourth of July in 1940 at Seven Falls as part of a cross-country exhibition tour, joining his youngest daughter, Dorothy, and wife, Claire, who arrived days earlier and checked the family into The Broadmoor Hotel. Ruth’s hosts were the managers of Seven Falls Co., Melvin Weimer and his wife, Frances.
Later that day, Ruth gave a dazzling hitting display at the former Sportsman’s Park. Admission was 50 cents for adults and just 25 cents for children under 12.
According to the Colorado Springs Gazette, “Ruth performed his exhibition in front of an overflowing crowd. Fans lined the baselines. Jimmy Thompson of the Orioles took the mound against the Babe, who promised the crowd he would ‘send one over the fence.’ Later, Jim Verrone of the Orioles pitched to Ruth, who still displayed his famous step-into-it swing. After he was done, the Babe signed autographs for adoring fans, everything from new baseballs to gloves and candy wrappers.”
Ruth was given the keys to the city by Colorado Springs Mayor George G. Birdsall and visited orphans at the Myron Stratton Home. He then turned the remainder of his time into a family vacation that included golf at The Broadmoor East, sightseeing and even an impromptu hitting display that saw him belt a ball over the uppermost Seven Falls. Melvin Weimer estimated the Babe’s blast 266 feet up to the top of the falls, according to the Gazette.
Offered for the first time is the remarkable collection of Ruth items preserved for 80 years by the Weimer family. It includes a single-signed baseball, an original signed photograph of The Babe enjoying his time in Seven Falls, a Type-One candid photograph of Ruth and his family and a letter of thanks to Melvin Weimer composed by Doan and signed by The Bambino, Claire and Doan. The trio assured Weimer “we haven’t forgot the nice time you gave us in Seven Falls.”
And no one, of course, will ever forget The Babe.

1934 New York Yankees Signed Baseball
In the storied history of the New York Yankees, the 1934 season was remarkable in its own right. Baseball’s two biggest icons, Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, shared the field but experienced drastically different fortunes.
The team finished with a record of 94–60, finishing seven games behind the Detroit Tigers. Amid this disappointment, the Yankees did the unthinkable and released The Babe, even though the baseball legend was selected to the All-Star team for the second consecutive year.
The 1934 season would be the last season that fans would witness the legendary Ruth play in Yankees pinstripes.
For Gehrig, 1934 brought arguably his greatest performance. Until Cal Ripken Jr. broke his record, The Iron Horse played more consecutive games in history. But he never had a better season than this one, when he earned baseball’s celebrated Triple Crown.

Capturing “The Spirit” of Jordan
Each year, thousands of sports fans arrive in Chicago with hopes that they could have witnessed Michael Jordan on the court. To connect with their hero and his legacy, they make a pilgrimage to the United Center at 1901 Madison Street to visit “The Spirit” – the iconic, bronze sculpture of Jordan that is arguably the most famous statue in all of sports.
ESPN named “The Spirit” one of the greatest sports photo opportunities, and it has become both a meeting place for fans at subsequent Bulls championships and a rallying point for Chicago Blackhawks fans during their glorious times at the arena.
“The Spirit” was commissioned to Highland Park, Illinois-based artists Omri Amrany and Julie Rotblatt-Amrany in 1994, and unveiled on television by Jordan, Jerry Reinsdorf and Larry King after Jordan’s initial retirement following three consecutive NBA championships.
Simultaneously, the NBA commissioned the Rotblatt-Amranys to create 28-inch bronze maquettes of the sculpture on 6-inch granite bases – with an order of 123 statutes that was ultimately limited to just 55 total. These exact replicas were offered as a fundraiser for the James Jordan Boys & Girls Club and they immediately sold out.
Originally in the collection of Johnson Publishing, this offering is one of the first to come to market since that initial sellout in 1994.
Rare Air indeed.

Height of sculpture: 26 inches. Height of base: 6 inches.

Jealousy On The Menu
Their dinner at Lino’s Ristorante in Chicago was so wonderful for Kate and Rich Roth, they didn’t realize how much time had passed on that night December 13, 1988. “We looked up to realize we were the last people in the restaurant, and then were absolutely starstruck when we witnessed who was streaming into the dining room,” Kate says.
Right before their eyes entered a Mount Rushmore of sports, one after the other — first Walter Payton, followed by Michael Jordan. Behind them came the biggest sports personality of that time – undisputed Heavyweight Champion of the World Mike Tyson, and his promoter, Don King.
The group was gathered to celebrate the birthday of Super Bowl XX MVP Richard Dent.
Although the massive star power in the room was stunning, Kate and Rich said the group seemed to be just a bunch of friends enjoying each other’s company. But one thing was “off,” Kate and Rich agree.
“Mike Tyson seemed to be in a bad mood, but we didn’t think much of it at the time,” Kate says. “We were so wowed by our luck at being there on this special night, that I focused on getting the maitre d’ to help us get an autograph from all these legends on our menu – an unbelievable story to share with our friends and family.”
It would be 32 years later when the Roths learned what was bothering Tyson that night – although until now, there was no proof and only stories that are the stuff of urban legend. In 2014, Tyson’s longtime friend and manager, Rory Holloway, co-wrote a book titled Taming the Beast: The Untold Story of Mike Tyson, which contained a number of unusual stories involving the former heavyweight champion of the world.
Among these was the story of the night Holloway and Tyson attended this very dinner, which took place just after Tyson and actress Robin Givens separated in advance of their June 1989 divorce. Iron Mike wasn’t coping well.
In his book, Holloway claims that Tyson sat across from Jordan drinking a Long Island iced tea and that he tried to keep the heavyweight champ calm, since Tyson knew Jordan and Givens had previously dated. But soon, Tyson could not be contained:
“I’m telling the server to water his drinks down ‘cause I see where this is going. Mike stares across the table at Michael Jordan. He says, ‘Hey man, you think I’m stupid? … “Jordan looks like he just seen a ghost. ‘I know you messed with her. You can tell me.’
But not before signing this menu — a rare piece of sports history in its own right.

*122 A Signed Restaurant Menu Featuring Michael Jordan, Mike Tyson, Walter Payton, Richard Dent and Don King,
acquired in person by the present owner from a December 13th dinner celebrating Dent’s 28th birthday, wherein, according to Tyson’s comanager, Rory Holloway, also in attendance, in a recent memoir, Mike Tyson confronted and publicly threatened Michael Jordan over his past relationship with soon-to-be ex-wife Robin Givens.
Holloway claims: “Mike Tyson’s sitting there with his drink of choice, a Long Island Tea, and when he drinks his real feelings come out.” He goes onto say, “I’m telling the server to water his drinks down ‘cause I see where this is going. Mike stares across the table at Michael Jordan. He says, ‘Hey man, you think I’m stupid?’. Holloway describes the expletives that followed: “It was a circus, for real, that night. Don King trying to change the subject. Me and John trying to hold Mike down. Mike telling everyone he’s going to bust Jordan’s ... Jordan’s dressed sharp as always and he can’t get out of there fast enough.”

160 An Important Group of Fielding H. Yost Items, Including a Twice Signed Football For Player and Spectator and Letter Outlining the Origins of the Tackle Back Formation,
comprising book inscribed “To Ohio Wesleyan University Library, F.H. Yost, Coach 1897, Foot-Ball Champions of Ohio” on author’s portrait. Yost began his legendary coaching career at Ohio Wesleyan at 26 leading it to a 7-1-1 record. Also signed on title page “Fielding H. Yost” on title page by the founding father of football at the University of Michigan.
Also a letter written by Yost to former player dated:
Ann Arbor, Michigan March 27, 1944
Dear Lester: In 1897 I coached my first college football team. It was the Ohio Wesleyan team of which you were a prominent member. As you will doubtlessly recall, we ran our offensive plays from three formations: the “T” formation; punt formation, universally used by all teams then and now; and the “Tackle Back” formation. It is with the Tackle Back Formation that I would like your assistance.
The history of football written in the Official Rules book erroneously states that this formation originated with Henry L. Williams of Yale in 1900. This is not sure. The Ohio Wesleyan team of Delaware, Ohio played its entire 1897 football schedule, the offense primarily was the Tackle Back formation. You will recall our tackles, W.D. Hodges and Del Sayers, leading the plays from the backfield in 1897. This makes Del Sayers the “original tackle back.” The formation figured prominently in the success of my teams from 1897 to 1906, when the rules were changed restricting pass plays. My teams won 8 different conference championships in succession using tackle back formation, namely; Ohio Wesleyan, 1897; Nebraska, ‘98; Kansas, ‘99; Stanford and San Jose State Teachers College, 1900; Michigan, 1901, ‘02, ‘03, and ‘04. May I digress a moment to tell you how the tackle back formation originated. During my playing days at West Virigina and Lafayette I played under the direction of “Dogg” Trenchard, all American, and Parke Davis, both formerly at Princeton. Our basic formation as with most schools at that time was the “T” formation with a balanced 7 man line. In addition we used the punt formation quite extensively. Football at this time was in a very transitional period of its development. Mass plays, with pushing and pulling, set the pattern of offense in 1895. The successful offensive experiment was the guards back offense developed by Geo. Woodruff of Pennsylvania about 1893. In this offense only 5 men were on the line of scrimmage. The guards lined up in the backfield and led the attack with such devastating effect that Penn was unbeaten for several seasons. Lafayette finally perfected a method of stopping this powerful backfield by a single expedient of concentrating the defensive linemen in an area where they could tackle the Penn guards as the play started thus piling up the offense. All this occurred while I was a player. Fielding H. Yost. $500-$700
