CONDITIONS OF SALE

Leslie Hindman Auctioneers is pleased to bring to auction a collection of art, design and memorabilia relating to our home base —the great city of Chicago. Made in Chicago features items of historical and cultural significance, ranging from maps of Chicago dating from the 19th century to contemporary paintings by Chicago Imagists. The city is currently in a yearlong celebration of the role that Chicago has and continues to play in the cultural landscape of America. The Made in Chicago auction event is a tribute to this celebration.

Lot 7 | “View of Aftermath of Chicago Fire.” Panoramic albumen print on two sheets.

Conducted chronologically, the sale will open with a number of books and maps relating to the Great Chicago Fire and the era of the World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893. Items include a panoramic albumen print of the aftermath of the fire, and also pre-fire abstract deed books used to rebuild the city after the tragedy. Also included is a two-volume set of architectural works by the firm of Graham, Anderson, Probst & White.

Architectural elements by architects such as Daniel Burnham, Louis Sullivan and Frank Lloyd Wright will be offered throughout the sale, originating from historical structures such as the Potter Palmer mansion, the Chicago Athletic Association, the Oriental Theater, Union Station and the Chicago Theater. Examples will include fragments in the Modernist, neo-Gothic and Beaux-Arts styles.

Unique items include costumes from the Lyric Opera, notably the 1976 production of Three Oranges by Sergei Prokofiev and a custom-made book, bound in goat hide, of headlines pertaining to Cubs history and their 2016 World Championship.

The sale will conclude with an homage to contemporary Chicago creators, closing with a session of paintings by artists such as Leon Golub, Karl Wirsum, Ed Paschke and Roger Brown.
