This work was published in Das illustrirte Mississippithal. Dusseldorf, 1857. It illustrates the Great Fire of 1849, which destroyed much of St. Louis’ riverfront, including many steamboats and buildings. Lewis’ depiction is based upon others’ descriptions as he was in Cincinnati at the time of the fire (John Reps, St. Louis Illustrated). Sight: 6 3/4 x 8 1/2 inches.
