One of the most prestigious American painters of the early 20th Century, Ralston Crawford is best known for his Precisionist artworks. Like many American artists during the early 1930s, he was searching for a distinctly American artistic vernacular in an environment that was increasingly impersonal, mechanized and industrial. The Precisionist style emphasized planar shapes, smooth texture and flat colors, tenets borrowed from the Cubist vocabulary, to depict the life of the American city. Crawford gravitated toward the style, having been introduced to Cubism and purist compositions while in Paris. By the early 1930s, his paintings of architectural and industrial subjects reveal the simplification and refinement of form and color that exemplify the modern style.

From 1934 to the early 1940s, Crawford’s compositions rely on massed geometric forms that reduce his architectural subjects to flat planes and cylinders devoid of humanity. In search of intriguing industrial and agricultural material, the artist worked in Chadds Ford and Exton Pennsylvania from 1934 to 1939. It was here that he executed Smith Silo, Exton.

Painted with geometric simplicity and clarity, in Smith Silo, Exton, Crawford used a vibrant color scheme to depict the rust red and straw yellow barn and silo, set against a cloudless blue sky. The color areas and adjoining planes are distinct, sharply divided from each other by the artist’s precise lines. The diagonal shapes of the roof barn and walls thrust the structure forward, giving it a commanding physical presence. The distillation of forms into flat angular planes to create a work of incredible visual power testifies to Crawford’s extraordinary skill in merging abstraction with recognizable imagery.
