Ulysses S. Grant (1882-1885), commanding general of the Union Army and 18th President of the United States, married Julia Grant after a lengthy engagement on August 22nd, 1848. This cup is dated to commemorate the couple’s 25th wedding anniversary and would have been presented to Mr. & Mrs. Grant during his first term as President. The cup then passed to the couple’s eldest child, Frederick Dent Grant. Following the death of Frederick in 1912, his wife Ida Horace Grant took ownership of the cup and subsequently gave it to her Grandson, Michael Cantacuzene-Speransky, on June 27th, 1921.
