gustav F. goetsch
a well-loved professor and prolific artist, gustav F. goetsch established himself as one of the leading talents of the 20th century st. Louis art scene. as an active exhibitor throughout his life of landscapes, interior scenes, portraits and still life paintings and etchings, goetsch consistently received excellent reviews and won top prizes in local and national exhibitions for the lyrical quality and graceful charm of his compositions.
Raised on a farm in northern Minnesota, goetsch trained at the Minneapolis Institute of art and the new york school of Fine arts, studying under William Merritt chase and James carroll Beckwith. From 1903 to 1907, goetsch lived and studied in Paris at the academie
Julian. his works from this early period suggest a strong impressionist influence and quite delicate hand. once back in the united states, goetsch continued to work as a professor, first at the Minneapolis school of Fine arts and then at Washington university school of Fine art in st. Louis where he retired from teaching in 1951. While living and working in the st. Louis art scene, goetsch became good friends with fellow contemporaries and colleagues, edmund henry Wuerpel and oscar Berninghaus.
goetsch produced images of beloved places, traveling to the far reaches of the country on driving trips with his children and wife, artist hazel Weedell goetsch. he also captured views in and around his family’s home in the glendale neighborhood of st. Louis, their flower garden, his artist studio in the back yard, and their front porch.
Leslie hindman auctioneers is delighted to be working with the goetsch Family to present works by both gustav goetsch and hazel goetsch in this auction.
