The hot air balloon P.T. Barnum left Chicago on July 15, 1875. This work depicts its passengers Washington Harris Donaldson (an aeronaut) and Newton S. Grimwood (a reporter for The Chicago Evening Journal). The balloon went down shortly after its launch, and Grimwood’s body was discovered on the shore of Lake Michigan while Donaldson’s body was never recovered. $700-900
