ELIZABETH CHEVAL

Elizabeth Cheval combined the sensibility of an experienced collector with the discerning spirit of a talented decorator. During her life she renovated two historic Lake Forest, Illinois homes, the last being a Stanley Anderson country estate first built in the 1930s. The collection of English furniture, Chinese export porcelain, Audubons and other works that filled her home appealed to her love of animals and history.

“Liz,” as she was called by most who knew her, was a pioneer in managed futures funds and one of few women in that business in the early 1980s. After receiving a degree in mathematics from Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin, Ms. Cheval was working as a desk clerk at the Chicago Board of Trade when legendary traders Rich Dennis and Bill Eckhardt placed their famous three-line ad in the Wall Street Journal. Ms. Cheval was the only woman selected to enter the renowned “Turtle” program, a trading boot camp run by Dennis and Eckhardt. She also was one of few Turtles to succeed — and thrive. After ‘graduating’ from Dennis and Eckhardt’s program, Liz founded Bannockburn, Illinois-based EMC Capital in 1988. Under her leadership, the firm grew to manage $148.75 million in assets.

More than for her financial and business success, however, Ms. Cheval was known for her warm and giving nature. “Liz’s laughing, bright-eyed enthusiasm warmed every encounter and reflected her kind and generous spirit,” wrote Tom Shanks of Hawksbill Capital, another successful Turtle student. “Brilliant and insightful, utterly devoid of pretension, her self-deprecating sense of humor never failed to charm.”
