John Arthur “Jack” Johnson was the first African American world heavyweight champion. Known as “the Galveston Giant,” Johnston made headlines in and out of the boxing ring as a fierce competitor and as a frequent target of racial discrimination. Johnson was arrested in October 1912 based on charges alleging that Johnson’s marriage to Lucille Cameron, who was white, violated the Mann Act, against “transporting women across state lines for immoral purposes” and accused Cameron of being a prostitute.
Johnston and his wife fled the country exiling to Canada and later to Europe, South America and Mexico, where they lived to avoid his prison sentence. Upon returning to the United States, Johnson surrendered to the authorities on July 20, 1920, and began his sentence of one year at Leavenworth Penitentiary; he was released on July 9, 1921.
In the present letter, Johnson writes from prison to his friend, Chicago jazz club owner William Bottoms, accepting his request to enter him into a boxing exhibition against a yet undecided opponent: “I am doing this to help you and to help myself, and I think it is a fair proposition, because just now it does not make any difference whom I may box or fight, I am sure to receive great returns... Now, Bill, I consider myself doing you a great favor, by giving you this golden opportunity. I am turning down good guarantees and perhaps losing many good friends, but, nevertheless... you know that when I make my mind to do something I will do or die.”
Together with typed legal document signed (“Wm. Bottoms,” “B.G. Clay,” and “Chas. Jackson”), one page, March 8, 1921, finalizing the legal details between Bottoms, Clay and Jackson for the proposed exhibition on August 1st, 1921.
