374 An American Silver Indian Style Ewer, Tiffany & Co., New York, NY, Circa 1882 of jug form, the lower body chased with large sprays of beaded scrolling foliage against a tooled ground below a band of finely chased infant and mature elephants amongst etched ferns, the shoulders chased with chevrons and sweeping scrolls extending to the conforming loop handle, marked on underside and numbered 6849-4799; 54 ozt. Height 13 1/8 inches. in Magnificent Tiffany Silver, 2001, p. 123. Loring suggests that the elephants were likely designed by James H. Whitehouse and then modeled and chased by Eugene J. Solginy. A section of particularly playful elephants seen on both the present lot and the 1874 pitcher were later incorporated by Paulding Farnham on a tankard made for the Paris Exposition of 1900, and again on a 1900 cigar box sold Sotheby’s, New York, 22 October 1988 (illustrated ibid., p. 216). An 1883 “Japanese Style” ewer with elongated neck, elephant band and a dragon handle was sold Sotheby’s, New York, 20 January 2006, lot 132. dealer Dunia Zacchini Norman. Before entering the antiques business, Norman had toured the world with Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus, having received an early exposure to the circus world by her circus-performer father. Norman began as a trapeze artist at the age 16, and took over her brothers’ cannonball act when they were drafted into WWII. She and her sister are considered the world’s first female human cannonballs, an act they performed for twenty years. She was featured on the Ed Sullivan Show and the cover of Life magazine.
