2023 Impact Report November 2023 | himforher.org
NOV EMBER 202 3
Dear Friends, “How can I help?” This question – which I heard time and again from CEOs and board experts – inspired me to create Him For Her. It prompted me to think creatively about how to enlist those in the boardroom today as allies in accelerating board diversity. Turns out that asking thought-provoking questions — questions that change status quo thinking — is one of the most valued qualities in a board member. After all, the right question can reframe a conversation and invite possibility. But when it comes to finding new board members, the most common question tends to be a limiting one: “Who do we know?” We believe a better place to start is by asking, “What do we need?”

What functional expertise, what scaling experience, what industry insights will unlock the company’s potential and propel the next stage of growth? On the following pages, you’ll see examples of boards that didn’t constrain their searches to those already in their network and the incredible talent they discovered as a result. Through our work, and with your support, we’ve helped more than 120 boards conclude, “she has what we need.” When it comes to board diversity, encouraging boards to reframe the question and look beyond their networks is one powerful way you can help. Onward!

Dear Friends, The complex world in which we live is unrelenting in the pressure it puts on today’s leaders. Climate change, geopolitical threats, social discord, the economy, and the unknowns around artificial intelligence are only a few of the current formidable challenges. No company and no CEO is immune from the speed of change affecting every market, globally. As an entrepreneur, an investor, and a serial board member, I believe it’s more important and more urgent than ever that boards of directors embrace diverse perspectives and skillsets. CEOs and shareholders benefit from a broader sounding board to help navigate issues shaping customer choice, employee engagement and investor sentiment. I was fortunate to meet Jocelyn through our mutual ties to the Aspen Institute. I believe in her leadership, and as Board Chair, I have contributed my time and energy to the unique approach Him For Her has developed to help companies build more resilient and more effective boards by embracing board diversity. Your support of Him For Her enables us to attract diverse talent and bring the expertise of so many exceptional people to the boardroom. Countless companies and leaders will benefit from your generosity, now, and in future generations. I’m grateful for your collaboration, and humbled to serve this wonderful organization.

Our Finances As we work to solve board diversity over the next decade, we continue to build a funding model that puts us on the path toward self-sustainability. Over the past year we have invested in our team, core operations and marketing to accelerate our progress, with resulting expenses outpacing revenue. We’ve onboarded two new team members and increased our investment to expand awareness through public relations, roundtables and events. We hired a dedicated CFO/COO to further professionalized Finance and Operations. Our expenses increased 45% year-over-year. Earned revenue continued to provide a significant portion of our funding, representing 47% of revenue and growing by 17% year-over-year.
