5. ACOUSTIC PLASTER

Like acoustic plasterboard, acoustic plaster finishes have been around for years. Varying ingredients, compounds and systems can increase or decrease weight and flexibility to further reduce surface reflections and in doing so help with equalization of the internal acoustics. Uses: shopping centers and theatres, universities, restaurants, office spaces, entrance halls, museums, libraries, dining areas as well as some very exclusive private residences. Pros: can further help to reduce surface reflection and resonance. Cons: although increased depth and weight can add to deflection of sound waves, these are invariably used for increased acoustic calibration.

6. ACOUSTIC CAULK A complementary soundproofing solution which is intended to seal overlaps of materials, fill small gaps, cracks, or spaces in a room. Sound can travel through even the smallest areas, and so it is important to seal off a room completely for the best possible results. Acoustic caulk is a must where plasterboard or drywall is installed to reduce possible weakness but should not be relied upon to achieve acoustic levels by themselves. Areas like corners between walls, lines where walls and ceilings meet, and doors and windows must be completely sealed. While this product is not STC or NRC rated, it is the next logical step after insulation, underlayment, and other, bigger soundproofing projects. Uses: to fill any gaps easily to ensure best soundproofing results Pros: inexpensive, easy to apply, comes out white and paintable Cons: a complementary soundproofing option and will not soundproof a room in isolation, requires a caulking gun

7. UNDERLAYMENT FOR FLOORS Anyone who would also like to benefit from some noise reduction can consider Underlayment. If the user plans correctly, the layer can be installed under laminate, engineered, or solid hardwood floors to make a real difference in the amount of sound that travels through the floor. This product installs easily underneath the flooring material of choice. It has adhesive strips along its length to seal the rows together as well. This creates an effective noise barrier and serves as the moisture barrier almost all flooring materials require. Plus, it installs underneath the floor, keeping it out of sight. The only downside to this product is the user has to be willing to install a new floor over it, meaning it requires more planning and a larger budget than Product Specs other soundproofing options. Type: Underlayment Rating: 73 STC Extra features: Moisture barrier Pros: • Very effective noise reduction • Simple installation process • Hides out of sight Cons: • Requires a new floor

8. BLACKOUT CURTAINS The soundproof and blackout curtains feature two layers of thick, triple-weave polyester fabric. This design allows them to absorb sounds up to two times more than traditional curtains, keeping the room quiet and peaceful. The twolayer design also adds a barrier of insulation to prevent warm and cold air from escaping or seeping in from outside. However, there isn’t an NRC or STC rating available. The curtains block 100 percent of sunlight and UV rays from entering a room. These acoustic drapes are available in multiple sizes and 16 color options to match different room decors and personal preferences. When needed, safely machine-wash these curtains in warm water with a mild detergent and iron them on low heat. Product Specs Type: Curtain Rating: Not available Extra features: Light control, style Pros • Two times more effective than traditional curtains • Blocks sunlight and UV rays • Available in several colors and sizes Cons • No NRC or STC rating available

9. ART ACOUSTIC PANELS For those whose home office or studio calls for something a bit classier than the eggcrate look or a network of ridges, soundproof in style with art acoustic panels. The panels come in various solid colors as well as a variety of interesting patterns. Choose a simple, client-friendly design or go full-traveler mode with a world map background. These acoustic panels are made from 100 percent polyester, so they’re safe for families and pets, with no offgassing, dust, or other possible harmful materials. They’re also flame retardant. Outfitting an entire room with these stylish squares could get expensive, since each package only covers 6 square feet. However, they’d make an attractive addition as an inset design surrounded by ridged acoustic panels. Product Specs •Type: Panel •Rating: NRC .9 •Extra features: Style, flame retardant Pros •Available in several colors and styles •Excellent NRC rating •Installs with double-sided foam tape Cons •Outfitting an entire room can get expensive

SOUND LEVEL METER A sound level meter is a measuring instrument, designed to measure sound levels in a standardized way. Commonly referred to as a sound meter, noise meter, decibel meter, or sound pressure level (SPL) meter, a sound level meter is designed to respond to sound in approximately the same way as the human ear. The purpose of a sound level meter is to give objective reproducible measurements of sound pressure levels (SPL).

II APPLICATIONS Sound level meters and analyzers are used to measure and manage noise from a variety of sources. • Environmental noise • • • • •

WORKING A sound level meter basically consists of a microphone, a preamplifier, a signal processing unit, and a display. The most suitable type of microphone for a sound level meter is a condenser microphone, which combines precision with measurement reliability. The microphone converts the sound signal to an equivalent electrical signal. The electrical signal produced by the microphone is at a very low level and must be enhanced by a preamplifier, before reaching the main processor.

Occupational noise Construction noise • Rail noise Airport noise • Community noise Mining noise • Wind farm noise • Industrial noise Traffic noise • Motorsport noise
