neytt store Spanning over 3,131.5 square feet and located in a vibrant part of Delhi, the store serves as a boutique rugs showroom outlined in an art gallery format. This multi-dimensional space is strategically designed to host a range of activities beyond gallery displays. The intention was to create a seamless flow of movement for viewers, guiding them on an immersive journey through the store, with designated “stations” acting as functional pit stops along the way.

MAZE partitions Essentially made from metal framework and flexible ply, the winding ‘maze’ partitions are clad in sisal carpet—a signature material of the brand. These partitions serve a dual purpose: they meander and subtly guide viewers along the curated path for exploration and also expand the surface display area beyond the existing walls, allowing for an additional showcase of the rugs.

MOUND STATIONS Carefully designed considering anthropometry for comfortable seating and interaction with the rugs, the mounds are dune-like structures made of multiple parts - such as slope, cone, seaters assembled together. The structural skeleton of each part is built with metal boxes, onto which multiple sheets of flexible plywood are clad. Sisal carpet by the brand is then stuck on to the plywood sheets.

The mounds ilt to be the playful and interactive elements onto which rugs can be displayed, felt and hence be understood f the mounds are also functional and break the space into the respective stations from the central space.

entrance seater-table At the entrance, this striking seater-table ensemble is placed alongside the brand wall, designed blending form and function. The piece features rugs by Neytt, in the brand’s orange-red & a muted grey. Designed as modular parts, the pieces can stand alone yet come together to form a cohesive unit. The curves and negative spaces serve a dual purpose, offering not just visual intrigue but also practical slots for brochures.

SEATERS

wayfinder Owing to the location of the store which is at a basement level behind a metro station, the visibility of the store to onlookers & passers-by is compromised. Thus, establishing a strong exterior brand presence was essential. The brand’s logo was extended as a wayfinder imitating the pattern of Neytt’s popular Met Gala 2023 carpet to lead the visitors to the store. The logo signage made of acrylic that could light up was fixed onto the beige signage wall made of fibre board. The leader on the floor & staircase was microcemented on the existing flooring.

HIGH-TABLE

console storage unit Placed in the design lab station, the console storage unit is customised from a detailed client brief. Its shutters, crafted from plywood, are adorned with beige sisal carpet samples, each bordered by wooden lipping in charcoal black finish. The rest of the unit’s structure is wrapped in black veneer, which runs throughout the store at skirting level.

museum design The proposed museum project at the hebbal lake site in Bangalore encompasses an area of 12168 square meters. The primary objective is to create an experience enriching space that seamlessly moves humans through its volumes. Key considerations include interactive exhibition spaces with distinct break points in between, scenic viewpoints, and landscaping to ensure a harmonious coexistence with the lakeside environment.

The design revolves around the interplay of “contraction and expansion”. The lines and spaces as guiding elements define the flow of visitors through the museum, creating a deliberate yet engaging journey. By distorting space & volume, main exhibition areas & transitional spaces are distinguished. The building is divided into multiple blocks, each aligned with specific functions with connecting bridges acting as breathing spaces in between for exploration and contemplation.

Structurally, load-bearing walls create a consistent pattern of spaces throughout all levels, with a metal sheet on top as a roof element bent at multiple angles to align with concept of varying volumes. The central display blocks appear to float on water, adding an intriguing visual element. The warm palette used throughout the design evokes a sense of nostalgia, while the overall form maintains a contemporary feel both together equating the core of museums, preserving and showcasing history for generations to come.

wedding venue ‘the knot’ The thesis project intended to understand the role of intuition in guiding user movement within an occasional architectural setup, exemplified by a wedding venue. Spanning an expansive built-up area of 20732 sq.m., the venue was thoughtfully crafted to not only accommodate the flow of diverse user groups but also emphasize on integrating the pull-factors, and addressing the functional & commercial desirables that define contemporary event spaces.

the uncertainity We have a mental model of the design typology for daily-use architecture. Whereas, in occasional architecture where community gatherings thrive, the layout is inclined to be open-ended. As a consequence, the environment tends to exert greater influence over users in occasional architecture. While in daily-use architecture, users typically have control over their surroundings. Therefore, intuition which is prompted by the environment, plays a major role in occasional architecture. Design cues can impact how individuals interact within an environment, eventually affecting their responses.

Owing to the name, ‘Nadhitheera’ is a cluster of stacked event spaces positioned in such a way that their longer sides face the stream. The three spaces can feature ceremonies of various sizes or also act as ancillary or dining spaces for each other.

The intent of this venue was to provide for multiple scales of weddings and thus, the multiple flows of circulation especially regarding guests, were determined. Besides, given the other diverse movement patterns of various user groups within the venue, the spaces utilized by each user category are strategically positioned in proximity. The buildings/spaces while retaining their each individuality could be connected via bridges, vertical circulation, pathways, courtyards or also have a connecting roof.

Curvilinear Forms The curvilinear forms were embraced to embody the concept ‘connections,’ & house clusters beneath. These curved roofs not only follow the winding pathways in the landscaping, but also play a role in manipulating volumes of the spaces beneath due to the upward and downward curves.

jalapaatha Resting at the site’s lowest elevation, the stream cascades to the basement level, creating a waterfall effect for the event space. Subsequently, it flows into the pond outside, marking the conclusion of the stream, for filtration before being pumped back into the well. The two event spaces are vertically arranged. The lower space opens directly to the pond and cascading waterfall. Above it, a more intimate enclosed venue is set against the picturesque backdrop of the pond and a lush mound of trees.

The landscape design embraces a play of unbalanced symmetry, striking a balance between organic and clean look. A curated landscape palette with illustrative examples was followed which creates a cohesive look across the venue.

heritage documentation The project involves the documentation of the temple town of Melkote, and focuses on a comprehensive survey of a large residence within the town. This initiative involved capturing the entire architectural plan to intricate details of the residence. Through this endeavor, we aimed to not only study the historcal significance but also understand the town’s architectural legacy.
