Editor’s Letter

As the ships that grace the pages of this publication are christened for their inaugural voyage, I’m proud to present to you the inaugural issue of Hills Views & Valleys. The final work has actually exceeded my expectations, taken me in directions I could never have imagined, and planted seeds of inspiration for many issues to come. It is through my experiences as a real estate agent that I felt a strong desire to introduce business owners to both new and long-time residents of our various communities. After living in the area for nearly 10 years, I realized how life so quickly passes, and what wonderful venues for worldwide entertainment, fashion, and lifestyle are created and centered in this sprawling metropolitan area that we lovingly call home. As we all realize at some point, we have only one life to live. We all aspire to live the best life possible, and Hills Views & Valleys is the ultimate compendium for that journey. My aspiration was to create a stylish, useful magazine that could serve as inspiration for people actively looking to upgrade their life. My dream is that Hills Views & Valleys will provide much-needed insight into the range of lifestyles enjoyed in locations scattered throughout Los Angeles, alongside stunning location photography, and thoughtfully written discussions of the options afforded to them. As my real estate patrons upgrade their life by moving to a larger or smaller home, or making their lives, and the lives of others, better by owning investment real estate, so can each and every person learn of the hidden gems found in the lovely hamlets of the magnificent City of Angels, and our surroundings. This project has indeed been a labor-of-love, and I am humbled and proud to feature 2 stories that cover worthy, charitable causes. In the act of highlighting their missions and goals… I’m committed to showcasing these and other campaigns, for the benefit of the groups they serve, in whatever fashion that I can as an editor. I am grateful for the opportunity to give a greater voice to these causes and others that are presented to me as we move forward. In serving as Editor-In-Chief of this exciting quarterly periodical, it has been a marvelous journey these past months. While it has made my days last into the early morning hours in order to accomplish this undertaking, while still successfully serving the needs of my real estate clients, I want to take this opportunity to publicly thank the team of writers, photographers, designers, and other vendors for their dedication and patience with me as the magazine has evolved. I know the dread that must have been felt when they would receive an email from me that was sent at 2 o’clock in the morning. “What is he up to now?” I suspect was wondered more than once. The magazine offers a fabulous digital presence as well for readers on the go and our web address is hillsviewsandvalleys.com. There you can find the momentum for the ultra-luxury that defines the creative energy of our area and what will be delivered to you with each future issue. It has been a joy to create this magazine and to give voice to others who serve. At Hills Views & Valleys, we shall endeavor to bring to you fresh perspectives on businesses, iconic landmarks, and adventures that are a part of your life now, and introduce you to new modes of residential life that will positively influence your life and times. Welcome. I look forward to the future and becoming a part of your life well lived.

Gratefully yours,

Otis W. Jones

Just north of Hollywood Boulevard, behind the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the TCL Chinese Theater, and the Magic Castle, there’s a hill that leads to a mountain palace, the English translation for the name Yamashiro. Mike Tyson Stands United with Charity at Celebrity Golf Tournament

F

ormer world heavyweight boxing champion and one-time ‘Baddest Man on the Planet’ Mike Tyson teamed up with the Standing United charity to fight substance abuse and homelessness at their Aug. 2 charity golf tournament at Monarch Beach Golf Links at Monarch Beach Resort in Dana Point, California.

Standing United is a non-profit organization helping people suffering from addiction and homelessness reintegrate into society and become upstanding citizens. Tyson and the Standing United organizers have been public with their issues of both homelessness and substance abuse. “Being aligned with the cause behind Standing United is something I am very proud of and I enjoy being on their team,” says Tyson, whose public persona has completed a 180-degree

turn over the past dozen years as he has put a public face to the country’s ever-growing problem with substance abuse. “This golf tournament was a good way to raise awareness because the work they do is truly life-changing.” Standing United works with law enforcement, community outreach programs, churches and volunteers to assist individuals experiencing homelessness and addiction. In any given night in Orange County nearly 5,000 people

are homeless. This provides the foundation of Standing United’s mission. “We founded Standing United to make a difference and that is exactly what we are doing, day-by-day,” says Danny Lansdale, founder of Standing United. “We value all of our supporters, including [Mike] Tyson whose continued support, compassion and belief helps us realize our mission.” Former boxers and football players headlined the group of golfers that also included entertainers, entrepreneurs and corporate executives. To compliment the event’s ambiance a DJ played classic Motown tunes while exhibitors from CBD and health brands kept non-golf playing guests occupied during the tournament.

The event included a photography session with Tyson, a $5,000 putting contest, a $100,000 ‘shoot-out’ and a VIP afterparty. Tyson Ranch, the boxer’s cannabis farm brand, was also on prominent display at the event. Attendees also shared their personal stories of overcoming obstacles in substance abuse. “The tournament was a huge success and we are happy that we raised money in a fun way for such a serious problem,” says Tyson. It is a problem that Standing United faces with all resources as the charity is already planning for 2020 activities and events. The charity connects individuals with professionals that teach them valuable skills to rejoin the workforce. They also assist with placement for housing and overall long-term support systems. HVV

Once Upon A Time In

Hollywood

A Tale By Quentin Tarantino b y L I S A MON TA LT O

That’s the story we’ve been hearing for the past fifty years, but no one tells the tale quite like Quentin Tarantino. Throw in a fictitious washed up TV cowboy actor, Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio), and his stunt double/friend, Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt), and you’ve got

O

nce up on a time, actress Sharon Tate and her famous director husband Roman Polanski moved into a lavish home at 10050 Cielo Drive, located in Benedict Canyon. High on the success of her award-nominated role as Jennifer North in the film “Valley of the Dolls,” Tate and Polanski represented new Hollywood. Meanwhile, in the desert, a man named Charles Manson was grooming a harem of young hippie girls and guys, developing a cult following that he called family. Just two weeks before Sharon Tate was expected to deliver her and Polanski’s baby boy, she was brutally murdered by four members of the Manson “family” who broke into her home while her husband was away. Ironically, the year was 1969, the year of the summer of love, and a time when hippies stood for peace, not murder.

“In this town, it can all change like that!” Rick Dalton played by Leonardo DiCaprio. the Tarantino trifecta. What’s the third part of the trifecta, you ask? Well, you see, Dalton lives next door to Sharon Tate (Margot Robbie). With all the players in place, the director sets the stage, showing the blurred line between the lives of the rich and famous and the lives of the growing population of barefoot hippies living in communes. While their lifestyles appeared to be drastically different, the commonalities of drug use and blind worship would prove otherwise.

THE THEATERS Cinerama Dome – 6360 Sunset Blvd., Hollywood Tarantino resurrected 1969’s Cinerama Dome from the famed Arclight Theater that now sits in its place on Sunset Boulevard. In the film we see it as Rick Dalton and Cliff Booth drive by. The Bruin Theater – 961 Broxton Ave, Westwood “Once Upon A Time In Hollywood” played there on opening weekend and it’s also the location where Margot Robbie’s Sharon Tate watches herself starring on screen with Dean Martin in the film “The Wrecking Crew.” New Beverly Theater – Referred to today as the New Bev, it’s depicted in the film when Sharon Tate’s attention is drawn to an adult movie premiere while she walks toward the El Coyote restaurant. The real-life theater is owned by Tarantino. Paramount Drive-In – 7770 Rosecrans Ave., Paramount This is the drive-in that we see behind the Cliff Booth’s trailer home. Doubling as the Van Nuys Drive-In of 1969, the Paramount Drive-In is a major attraction on hot summer in nights in Los Angeles as it plays first-run movies on two screens. “Once Upon A Time In Hollywood” appeared there on opening night. The Vine Theater – 6321 Hollywood Blvd., Hollywood Opened in 1940, it was originally called the Admiral Theater, later renamed Vine Theater, showing second-run movies. In 2007 the theater closed to the public and was only available for location shootings, private screenings, and church services. Since 2015, the Vine Theater has been available for hire for private showings.

With the lead roles cast, there was one more starring role to be filled, that of Hollywood itself, but just like the other stars of the film, Tinsel Town needed a makeover … a retro makeover, before it could appear on screen. Transforming 2019 Hollywood into 1969 Hollywood was a major feat in a tourist town that never sleeps, but when Tarantino was finished, fifty years had vanished right before our eyes. HVV

THE RESTAURANTS Casa Vega – 13301 Ventura Blvd., Sherman Oaks This Mexican restaurant has become a landmark in the valley, originating in 1956. Its red leather booths haven’t been updated much, giving it an authentic feel for the scene where Rick Dalton and Cliff Booth sit at table #5 before heading back to Cielo Drive on the night of the murders. Musso & Frank Grill – 6667 Hollywood Blvd., Hollywood A staple in Hollywood since 1919, it was the perfect setting for the scene in which Rick Dalton and Cliff Booth meet up with Al Pacino’s Marvin Schwarz, not to be confused with Schwartz. Chili John’s – 2018 W. Burbank Blvd., Burbank This 1946 diner acts as a backdrop in the scene where Cliff Booth picks up hitchhiker Pussycat, one of Manson’s hippie girls, played by Margaret Qualley. El Coyote – 7312 Beverly Blvd, Fairfax Established in 1951, this is the actual restaurant where Sharon Tate ate with friends on the tragic night of August 8, 1969. Tarantino snagged the exact same booth to film the scene with Margot Robbie as Sharon Tate. THE BOULEVARDS The Sunset Strip and Hollywood Boulevard Two of the biggest and most traveled boulevards in Los Angeles had to be filmed on one side at a time in order to keep the streets open. Fake storefronts were installed before filming began in order to “sixtify” the exteriors of shops, fast food joints, and tourist attractions. Supply Sergeant – 6664 Hollywood Blvd, Hollywood Still in existence today, Supply Sergeant received a retro-refitting to bring it back to its 1969 look. Peaches Records & Tapes – 6666 Hollywood Blvd., Hollywood Closing its doors in 1980, the popular music store was recreated by Tarantino and crew, complete with its signage. THE RANCHES Spahn Ranch Spahn Ranch burned down in a 1970’s wildfire, making the Manson family the last to live there with blind owner George Spahn. To recreate the ranch, Tarantino only needed to look down the road to Corriganville Park (700 Smith Road, Simi Valley). Originally called the Corriganville Movie Ranch, it was used as a western set, making it a great choice to recreate Spahn Ranch for the film. Melody Ranch – 24715 Oak Creek, Newhall Referred to as Gene Autry’s western movie ranch, the Melody Ranch was used to shoot many westerns, including the popular western TV show called “Lancer,” where Leonardo DiCaprio’s character Rick Dalton was filming a guest spot in Tarantino’s film. The Sight of the Infamous Murders Sharon Tate’s Home – 10050 Cielo Drive, Beverly Hills A long driveway on a hill led to the Tate home, which provided the perfect cover of darkness for four of Manson’s cult followers to walk up to the house and break in, murdering all four inside, including an 8.5 month pregnant Sharon Tate.

STAGING Is This The Secret Weapon Behind Explosive Home Sale Prices? by C O L E M A N T H O M A S

A

FIRST IMPRESSIONS ARE EVERYTHING

bsolutely! Home staging is a practice whereby residential homes are prepared to give potential home buyers a more enticing first impression of a property. The sole aim of home staging is to make a home more appealing, thereby increasing its marketability and ensuring a swift sale. Home staging has become a popular solution as home sales have become increasingly strategic. According to the National Association of Realtors, for every $100 invested in staging your home, the potential return is $400, which means that home staging has the potential to quadruple investment price!

Painting, lights, art, home accessories, draperies, and upholsteries are important considerations when staging a home. Well-executed staging styles lead the buyer’s eyes to the most desirable features of a property, regardless of how big or small it is. The home seller must be willing to spend time and resources to achieve the desired effect of home staging and maximize profits. For the best services, hiring professional home stagers is advisable.

Here are a few elements of effective home staging: • Curb appeal: Improving curb appeal is very important – it helps make a lasting first impression. Planting flowers, stylishly mowing the lawn, repainting some of the building’s exterior, as well as other techniques that can be offered by professionals can add beauty to a listing. © Bernard André

© Todd Goodman / LA Light

• Consider the floors, walls, house accessories, and the furniture: The inside look of the house must be taken care of. Walls should be repainted and floors should be given a thorough cleaning. Wood floors should be refinished if they are in poor condition to give an appearance of newness. Worn-out or unfitting accessories should be replaced and the selection of new accessories should be based on texture and design. • Consider rearranging the house: The placement of items in the living room, dining room and bathroom should be done with a high level of intention. For example, in your living room the furniture should be arranged to create an inviting conversation area, and the bathroom should imply luxury and comfort in its arrangement. The house furniture can also be temporarily replaced or rearranged to create a sense of appeal for your buying audience. • Avoid clutter and personalization: Now that you want to sell your home, remove especially personal items, such as your photographs and any other personal cluster; keep in mind that not everybody has the same taste. You would want the potential buyer to be able to envision their lives inside their prospective home.

DESIGNING

YOUR KITCHEN Is Light or Dark Cabinetry the Best Choice?

b y OL I V I A MON T E N E G R O

K

itchens are the heart of the home. It is where the coffee is brewed, meals are created, and friends are welcomed. A fabulous kitchen can quickly sell a home as the kitchen is, for many, the most important room in the house. If you are about to embark on a kitchen renovation, you have many decisions to make. Perhaps the most important choice is that of the cabinetry as it sets the tone and style of the room for all of the design elements. Designers are often asked if white and lighter cabinets are preferred to dark woods and dark shades of paint. Surveys actually show that buyers are nearly perfectly divided on this issue. And while you want to select design elements that please your taste, savvy homeowners will keep the thought of resale in mind. White kitchens with white and grey marble have recently been wildly popular and that concept has given way to offwhite shades as the trend has evolved. Soft blues and light mint greens are making headlines as an alternative to white. Color adds warmth to spaces and an island is the perfect place to enjoy a dramatic shade you love, such as navy or periwinkle, without having the whole room participate.

40 | HILLS, VIEWS, & VALLEYS

Light and white cabinetry will give an illusion of space and can help to bring more light to a darker area. White cabinetry says “clean and fresh, but may not be a practical choice in a home with pets and small children. If you are committed to keeping it spotless, despite your household occupants, white or offwhite has great appeal to buyers.

White cabinets can be traditional and detailed, farmhouse style, sleek and modern, or even evoke a country French feel. Most counter top choices work well on light or white cabinetry, but use caution and have an overall design concept that will avoid an institutional look and sterile feel. While white can be a classic and timeless look, light colors can also discolor and show signs of age and wear more rapidly than darker woods or paints. If you march to a different drum, and have a kitchen with ample light, via windows

or proper lighting, black can also be a timeless look. While it is bold, it is dramatic and dark cabinets can seem to recede while showcasing your cabinet hardware beautifully. Lush dark browns and rich charcoal greys are sophisticated choices and look fabulous when the cabinetry is sleek, modern, and simple. Dark kitchens can add drama and formality to a room, and will hide the splatters of daily life much more than a light or white cabinetry selection.

Dark can be achieved with stains, paints, or laminate surfaces. When choosing stained cabinetry, the darker shades and door styles that evoke the look of fine furniture will be less affected by the whims of design. Modern, flat panel doors and drawer fronts are virtually timeless, though not everyone enjoys the stark minimalism they evoke. Should you order your cabinets pre-made and pre-finished, or have them installed raw and finished on site? In California, the more durable paints, stains, and lacquers are heavily regulated, and many cabinet manufacturers are located outside of the state to have access to those materials. The advantage of cabinets arriving in the finish of your choice is that once installed, they

are ready to go. However, should a door or drawer be damaged at a future date, a replacement may not exactly match as woods, such as Cherry, can darken as they are exposed to light and factory painted surfaces can fade or discolor. Having your cabinetry finished on site can allow you to be more involved in the actual process and may help in creating just the look you want. Spraying the cabinetry is fast and will give a smooth and uniform finish. Hand-painted cabinets tend to give the feeling of charming, classic furniture, and offer the added advantage that they can be easily touched up should a repair or replacement of a panel become needed. Can you design your kitchen so that every possible future buyer will love it? That seems doubtful as personal tastes vary so. But selecting tasteful and timeless materials will not only give you the kitchen of your dreams that will endure the vagaries of design trends, it will invite a future owner to fall in love with it as well. THE

Queensberry & ITS KING

A NEW REIGN HAS BEGUN IN DTLA FEATURING ELIAH MOUNTJOY b y M A N DI E B R I C E

T

he downtown revival is swiftly progressing, with what seems to be a new restaurant, bar, or retail space opening nearly weekly in an area that was a Los Angeles dead zone for years, particularly prior to the development of Staples Center, and then LA Live. How does one stand out when new places are popping up all the time? The Queensberry, the latest offering from the Circa 93 Group that opened this past June, does this in two ways: hiding, and setting a standard for excellence. While the address for The Queensberry is 819 S. Flower Street, you may not find what you’re seeking using that knowledge alone. The entrance to this hidden gem is in the alleyway, marked by a simple pink Q, a keypad, and a buzzer. This secrecy reserves this treasure for those in the know. A limited small plates menu is available in its lounge, which serves as the point-of-entry into the establishment. The interior takes decor inspiration from members-only bars in London and the venue’s namesake, the Marquess of Queensberry John Graham Chambers, who is the creator of the rules of modern boxing - hence the portraits of boxers throughout the space. In the chic lounge, explore a craft and classic cocktail menu, or try an American whisky - there’s one from each state in the Union. Social hours are between 5pm-10pm Wednesday through Saturday, where you can enjoy $5 beers, $10 wines, $3 off all signature cocktails, and their dining fare. There’s a range of bites that includes Shishito Peppers, Beef Short Rib Taquitos, or the Queensberry Burger for those looking for something more substantial. Limited seating reservations are also available via the Maître d’, Eliah Mountjoy, whose bartending journey starts in San Francisco in the early 2000s and makes its way to the Queensberry via Hollywood and Beverly Hills. After a decade and a half of classes, palate development, and even learning spirit production, Mountjoy is now in charge of ensuring a great experience for every client, and is eager to share his knowledge and enthusiasm. While 10pm marks the end of social hours, it could be just the beginning of a very fun night. The bar remains open until 2am, and boasts a dance room with resident DJs on weekends and holidays, and featuring a light-up floor that dramatically enhances the energy and ambiance. In this room, be sure to try a draft cocktail from their list, created by Scott Cushman, which makes delicious drinks quickly available for thirsty patrons in a rush to return to dancing. For an extra special experience, try taking your cocktail knowledge and palate to the next level with a cocktail class or spirit tasting. Classes are in session weekly on Thursdays, with Cushman and Mountjoy administering both knowledge and delectable libations. The Queensberry is also available for both private and semi-private events seven days per week. With Eliah Mountjoy in your corner, The Queensberry is the perfect setting for any great night. HVV

ashion designer Prabal Gurung said “Nails are the period at the end of the sentence. They complete the look.” Anyone who has had a well-done manicure likely agrees; even your gestures change, with a more dramatic flair, when your nails look good. Conversely, when it’s time to get a manicure refresh, we sadly often hide our hands or don’t even gesture at all. Enter the rise of the nail artist - bringing art to our fingertips - literally. If you’re lucky, you’re experiencing Nail Art By Queenie. Queenie Nguyen is what many call “an overnight success ten plus years in the making.” She started in the nail industry for extra money in high school and college, and is now making the transition from working in a Beverly Hills salon to being fully self-employed. She currently spends time doing manicures onset, serves some of her top clientele with house calls, as well as hosting fun p o p - u p events at different locations in the L o s Angeles area, like the Orly Color Lab. She’s in the process of opening her own studio, and is “really excited to use that as my creative outlet for more fun and creative nail art.”

Her resume includes credits such as the most recent Gabrielle Union x New York & Company campaign collection (see photo), printed in the Vanity Fair Emmys Issue, Harper’s Bazaar six times, Vogue Portugal, and Refinery 29. You may have also seen her work on the fingers of Julia Roberts, Halsey, Carey Mulligan, Mandy Moore, Nicole Kidman, Minnie Driver, Gina Rodriguez, Dan Levy, Natasha Lyonne, and Dania Ramirez. While she specializes in nail art (hence the moniker “Nail Art by Queenie”) and gel extensions, which are a healthier alternative to acrylic nails, she also works on editorial sets and loves fun creative projects collaborating with lifestyle brands. Looking at Queenie’s work may challenge your previous conceptions about nail art, which has changed dramatically in recent years. What once may have brought mental images of tacky, two-inch acrylics has now become a vast form of self-expression ranging from subtle nude-toned nail art to Picasso-inspired looks and everything in between. As for current trends, Queenie has noticed that people are becoming increasingly conscious of the impacts different services and products have on their bodies and are opting for safer procedures with fewer dangerous chemicals. The producers of nail goods are responding in kind, with an uptick in availability of vegan and non-toxic products. Queenie expects that reporting on nail trends in online and digital magazines will continue to increase. Instagram is, of course, another great place to keep your eye on incredible trends, artists, and styles, and you can find Queenie there at @NailArtByQueenie. Word of mouth, however, is still king when it comes to finding a nail artist of your own. If you’re blessed to call the City of Angels home, try Nail Art by Queenie, but if not - definitely ask a friend, as nothing beats a personal recommendation. HVV

From

Down Under to Up Top LA Brow Expert Nieves Calvo-King Brings her Empire to West Hollywood by A M A N D A M U T C H I E

I

f the eyes are the windows to the soul, shouldn’t we ensure that the areas surrounding them are well-kept? This may initially induce visions of makeup, but there may be an even more important factor: our eyebrows. LA brow expert Nieves Calvo-King noticed a trend of well-applied makeup not being enough for a beautiful result on clients whose brows weren’t properly-shaped while working as a freelance bridal hair and makeup artist in Australia. This prompted a deepdive into the world of brows, which steamrolled into an obsession, turning Calvo-King a threading authority and international business owner. After opening two successful brow bars in Sydney and moving to LA, one of Calvo-King’s celebrity clients, WWE wrestler Nikki Bella, introduced her to her hairstylist Paul Norton, who invited her into his collaborative and supportive salon environment at “Leo by Paul Norton” in West Hollywood. Norton’s salon offers hair dressing services, spray tans,

82 | HILLS, VIEWS, & VALLEYS

sugaring, and facials in addition to Calvo-King’s brow expertise. She provides threading on all parts of the face, brow tinting, as well as full shape and consultations for brows that include brow measuring, growth analyses, history, and treatment plans. For those unfamiliar with threading, it is a hair removal practice originating in South Asia and the Middle East centuries ago that is increasing in popularity in the Western world. A practitioner uses a piece of thread to grab individual hairs and pull them out at the root. It is superior to waxing for a long list of reasons: waxing can create saggy skin from pulling over time, waxing removes 2-3 layers of skin which can result in hyperpigmentation, ingrown hairs, missed hairs, and it can cause burns, bleeding, and bruises in extreme cases. Threading also removes all hairs (as opposed to potentially snapping just the exposed part off) and allows for a more precise removal of hair. According to Calvo-King, natural brows are currently fashionable, and she hopes and believes this trend is here to stay. She feels that the thin brows from the 1920s which resurfaced in different variations in the 70s, 90s, and early 2000s are a sure-fire way to look older. This is where, for many, microblading comes in. Microblading is a semi-permanent tattoo procedure involving extremely fine cuts into the skin with a cosmetic ink applied, and can be a great solution for anyone who has over plucked in the past, or simply has few brow hairs. This LA brow expert is passionate about changing the way we think about brows, and educating both the public and beauty practitioners on the five main points of the brow, how to balance them using the client’s facial features, and how to maintain brows between visits. Between recently doing Priyanka Chopra’s brows for BeautyCon here in LA and the classes she’ll be offering in Fall, there’s plenty of excitement in the brow queen’s world. For inquiries, contact info.nievescalvo@gmail.com, @nievescalvoking on instagram, or contact Leo by Paul Norton to book. HVV

BREAKFAST Should I or Shouldn’t I?

O

ften touted as “the most important meal of the day,” breakfast occupies a special place in our cultural imagination.

The idea of breakfast arose in 15th-century England, though the taking of it was in no ways standard. Breakfast was a meal of the country houses of the English gentry, used as a display of wealth and hospitality on special occasions—often before a long day of hunting. By the 16th century, it had elsewhere established itself as a meal for children, the elderly and labourers, though for healthy adults the meal was considered indulgent,

by G L O R I A B A S S

gluttonous and medically unsound. Doctors held it was better to wait until after morning exercises, which “purged the body of superfluities,” before then taking a meal approximately four hours after rising—today, we would call this lunch. It was not until the Industrial Revolution that breakfast, as a meal to be taken first thing in the morning, became truly common, with workers requiring an extra boost to get them through a long day of manual labour— workers would typically eat porridge, cheese, eggs, bread or even ale for their morning repast. And it was not until the 20th century that anyone began to imagine it was “the most

important meal of the day.” For that line, we can thank a 1944 marketing campaign for Grape Nuts, wherein General Foods proclaimed the importance of breakfast in pamphlets at grocery stores and through radio advertising. The meal thus became increasingly utilitarian, making way for the rise of cereal. Though today the idea that breakfast is our most important meal has come under scrutiny, with that honor now more generally going to dinner, contemporary medical advice typically holds that it’s beneficial to begin the day with food. But just as has ever been the case, there’s conflicting opinion on what should be eaten and when in order to lead your best and healthiest life. Since we’ve not managed to come to any consensus about that over several centuries, why not ask what how the meal works in the context of your particular life?

How does the ritual breakfast make you feel? The sizzling of an omelette, the satisfying click of the toaster after you toss in your bagel, the rolling pop of percolating coffee— for some, these classic sensory indulgences take on the status of a morning meditation. As humans, we’re creatures of ritual. Your morning ritual should set the tone for the rest of your day. Ask yourself what makes you feel like your best self in the early morning—set your intention and design a ritual around that. Others prefer fixing a morning smoothie, or the smell of the coffee shop and greeting from the barista on the way to work, scrolling through the news of the world as you munch, or sitting down with friends, roommates, kids or partners to discuss the coming day over a shared meal. There’s no right answer.

It’s all about what inspires you.

What kind of breakfast foods should you eat? On a more practical level, one important consideration when considering breakfast is the level of exertion you expend throughout the morning. If you’re off to the gym first thing, you might consider a heartier and more calorific breakfast to replenish yourself afterwards, like a protein-packed bowl of nuts and oats, or more classic breakfast fare. If your life revolves around running from one meeting to the next and giving presentations, you likewise might want to give yourself a little extra fuel—chia yogurt and mango is always delicious if you’re more adventurous. Otherwise, the standard continental has a lot of good choices to get you through to lunch. If you work a desk job, try something lighter that refreshes and revives you for the morning. Here’s a great recipe that will give you a little extra verve in the morning without the midday coffee crash:

Make a conscious choice

Should I or shouldn’t I?

Throughout a hectic day, many people skip on breakfast, only to pull up to a drive-through at 10 am, raid their desk drawer for whatever’s stashed in it, or quickly grab a donut from the break room. It’s fine if you make a concerted choice to graze on pre-selected snacks in the morning rather than sit down to a meal, but mindless eating generally means that you’re not considering what your body needs or giving yourself the space to enjoy a few moments to yourself early in your day.

As with most things in life, there’s no good consensus: people have and have not been starting off the morning with food throughout history. But breakfast is a great chance to take a moment to indulge your senses and center yourself for the day to come. What that means will be a matter of your personal aesthetics and personality, the lifestyle you live, and the time you’re willing and able to give yourself to enjoy it.

If breakfast to you means munching on a granola bar while you hum along to the radio on your commute, that’s as valid a ritual as any, but recognize it as such and check in to enjoy it.

One thing is for certain though: thinking consciously about breakfast and asking yourself the questions above will give you room to make the right choices for you and potentially stop you from the mindless eating that doesn’t add value to your health and personal wellness. And maybe thinking a bit more about the broader “importance” of meal will inspire you to show either your friends and family or yourself a little more of that English hospitality and luxury on a morning in the near future. WEALTH by Z A N E F O L E Y

E

veryone has heard the maxim, “Health is Wealth” but Los Angeles lives and breathes a healthy lifestyle. You want to stand out; you need to get fit, and getting fit starts with a healthier diet.

Thankfully, Vegan is a word of encouragement in LA. “Do they have vegan options?” No longer gets a cockeyed response but a fist bump. The change of normalcy is great considering the positive effects eating vegan has on the environment and our bodies, but not everyone can cannonball into a dairy and or meat free diet. That being said, it doesn’t mean we can’t dip our toes in the water first and get our feet wet. Here are some tasty vegan alternatives to impress your next dinner guests and help get you started on a healthier lifestyle. Swap out these dairy dominant condiments for their vegan alternatives: Milk: Yes, there’s literally dozens of different milk substitutes on the market. Many of which are packed with more protein and calcium than actual cow’s milk. If you’re just getting started, consider almond milk as your morning coffee creamer. Dairy lactates your intestines making absorption of nutrients much more difficult. Avoiding dairy in the morning is a great way to boost your metabolism and get you started on the right track. Almond Milk is also great for those of us who are not big fans of soy and with vanilla and chocolate flavorings you can still get that sweet kick without the consequences of dairy. Butter: Vegan butter is one of those things once you try it you’ll never go back to dairy based butter. Generally, vegan butter is infused with olive oil, an already delicious cooking ingredient most people are accustomed to. Whether your dropping it into your pan before you cook or spreading it on a freshly toasted piece of bread, subbing out for this healthy alternative gives you all the health benefits without sacrificing quality or taste. Mayonnaise: Do you ever wonder why the thought of eating a whole bowl of mayonnaise makes you sick? Consider the amount of fat and dairy in mayonnaise and it might start to make sense. The idea behind these alternatives is you might still be making a turkey sandwich

but you’ve found a way to take a step in a more positive direction for your health. Something as small as mayonnaise on a sandwich is perfect to go unnoticed by your taste buds, but felt by your gut.

Recipe: Homestyle Vegan In N Out Burger What you’ll need: 4 Beyond Meat Burgers 4 Whole Grain Buns 1 Fresh Onion, 1 Tomato, 1 Avocado (Optional) 2 tablespoons Vegan Mayonnaise 1 tablespoon Brown Sugar 1 tablespoon Ketchup 1 tablespoon Relish 4 slices of vegan cheddar

Tofu: This four-letter word has carried a taboo with it since it first hit the market. The truth is, Tofu has come a long way. Don’t believe us? Next time you’re getting Pad Thai try substituting the meat for tofu and see for yourself. Tofu can camouflage itself beautiful into so many meals. One of my favorites is in Spaghetti. Dehydrate the tofu first; sear it in olive oil and garlic until the sides start to blacken. Don’t be afraid to try something new! For that classic In N’ Out taste, grill your onions and fry your patties in mustard. Add fresh onions sliced thinly as well. You can also lightly toast the buns on the pan with vegan butter. Some people prefer more mayonnaise or relish based on your pallet. And yes, beyond meat burgers are BBQ friendly! HVV

America’s Love for Classic Cars When Classic Cars Evoke a sense of Nostalgic b y JA M E S R I V E N

M

odern cars may be fast and equipped with the latest technologies, but nothing beats a classic car for the Americans who admire and even acquire these pieces of our cultural history. These cars evoke a sense of nostalgia in onlookers and drivers alike—and they all have a story to tell. Whether for competition, adventures with their owners, or day-to-day life, every classic car has a tale behind its color through to the minute scratches on its bumper. The lives, designs and style of these classic automobiles have inspired collectors such as former late night host Jay Leno, who runs Big Dog Garage located just up the road in Burbank. The garage houses Leno’s impressive collection of classic cars and motorcycles, including a 1909 Baker Electric—a car ahead of its time that needed no cranking, drove silently, and ran on alkaline batteries. Because it lacked the usual gasoline smell and didn’t require muss and fuss, it was marketed as a vehicle of women’s liberation.

Whether it’s the canary yellow 1932 Ford Coupe that John Milner smokes Harrison Ford in during the Paradise Road drag race in American Graffiti, or the 1966 Ford Thunderbird that defined Thelma and Louise, or the 1958 Plymouth Fury that stood as the possessed centerpiece of the 1983 cinematic rendering of Stephen King’s Christine, nothing creates a greater sense of time, place and atmosphere than a classic car. Once they drive onto the scene our imaginations are set to build a whole world and narrative around them. These are set pieces par excellence— set pieces that have been driving cinema ever since silent pictures like The First Auto, a 1927 film about the rifts caused by the transition away

from horses, all the way to the illegal street racing and car heists of the modern Fast & Furious franchise. Classic cars, as well as their soon-to-beclassic counterparts, transport us not only from destination to destination, but across eras into different lifestyles and stories. In that way, they will always have a particular place in Hollywood. These pieces of our history not only appeal to car lovers, but also those who enjoy engineering, design, art—and of course, a good story. Start thinking of your favorite cinematic scenes and you’ll soon discover the legacy of automobiles in taking us on some of our greatest and most nostalgic cinematic journeys too. HVV

Leno is unique among collectors for driving all his cars, from the Baker to his 1928 Bugatti Type 37A Grand Prix—the iconic racing car that could reach speeds of up to 122 mph back in the day when such speeds were unheard of—to the tiny 1933 LLC Rocket, the only model ever produced by the British manufacturer, and that weighs only 850 pounds. And local collectors like Leno know that there is no classic Hollywood without classic vehicles.

os Angeles is known as the west coast’s fashion capital, so it is no surprise that the global fashion show circuit, Fashion Week powered by The Society, is coming to Los Angeles on Oct. 10.

What is a surprise is that Fashion Week touts inclusion for its fashion show for all sizes, colors, heights and shapes, something that is still unique for the fashion industry as we enter the third decade of the 21st century. “Our brand focuses on creating an inclusive brand that appeals to as many people as possible,” says Krissy King, co-president of Fashion Week powered by The Society. “Los Angeles Fashion Week will bring an amazing west coast flair with a laid-back attitude with love for all things fabulous and glamorous. We have major celebrity status with our events and you will typically see fashion lovers come from around the globe to witness our runways,” King continued. “Our prior Los Angeles fashion shows have brought celebrities such as Mel B and Blac Chyna. You never know who will arrive at our shows!”

dedicated to improving the quality of life of those who can’t cook for themselves. What began as an organization to n July 18, 2019, Project Angel Food help people with AIDS, grew to encompass those suffering prepared and delivered its 12 millionth from other serious health problems, such as congestive free meal, medically tailored to one of heart failure, renal kidney failure, diabetes, gastrointestinal their 1,450 clients suffering from life- issues, cancer, and more. threatening illnesses and living in LA County. Celebrating their 30th anniversary of gifting meals to heal the sick, the “Project Angel Food brings out the best in Los Angeles,” organization’s kitchen is made up of 80% volunteers, all said Executive Director Richard Ayoub.

It all started in 1989, when Marianne Williamson began serving the community at the LA Center for Living, a house where those suffering from long term illness could come for a meal, massage, or anything that helped them heal. When some regulars stopped coming, she grew concerned. After learning those people had become housebound due to AIDS, she started a small outreach program called Project Angel Food in the kitchen of the Crescent Heights United Methodist Church, cooking comfort food to be delivered to their homes. She and Grieving Expert David Kessler, along with Author Louise Hay held a fundraiser, earning $11,000 to fund the program. Downstairs in the church, weekly AA meetings were held, and soon the recovery community rallied behind Williamson. One such man was Larry Fortensky, who volunteered to set up tables in the kitchen and help assemble the meals, before lugging the tables downstairs for the AA meetings, while his dark haired, violet eyed wife Elizabeth waited outside smoking a cigarette. If you haven’t figured it out already, that women was, none other than the Elizabeth Taylor. By 1992, AIDS cases had dramatically increased, and Project Angel Food moved to a larger facility on Sunset

Boulevard, but by 1993, donations began to wane. Project Angel Food was having a hard time making ends meet, when out of the blue an envelope appeared at the door. Inside was a note with a check for $25,000. The note said …

Dear Project Angel Food, Keep doing what you’re doing! Love, George

A $25,000 check arrived each year after that until the day George Michael passed away. “George’s family apparently knew the important role Project Angel Food played in his philanthropy, so we are happy that they reinstated his donation last November,” Richard Ayoub said. In the 90s that money helped the project to continue, but at one point organization leaders explored merging with APLA to ensure that Project Angel Food stayed afloat. David Kessler went to Elizabeth Taylor for advice. She immediately wrote a check from her AIDS foundation for $100,000, making that Project Angel Food’s first grant. In 2006, Project Angel Food acquired their forever home at 922 Vine Street in Hollywood, and in November 2007 a ribbon cutting ceremony was hosted by Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, with Maria Shriver and Christopher Schwarzenegger opening the ceremony.

oday, Project Angel Food relies mainly on funding from private donors, only 23% is from government funding, with 12,000 medically tailored meals delivered each week to 1,450 clients, 98% of whom live at, or below, the poverty line. Over 20,000 meals have been prepared six days a week based on specifications from dietitians who speak with each patient to learn about their medical diagnosis and diet restrictions. Chefs then create recipes tailored to those medical needs, keeping food restrictions in mind, such as nut allergies, lactose intolerance and religious food restrictions. Each recipe is made with delicious ingredients and a beautiful aesthetic. The meals are flashfrozen and hand delivered by volunteers or professional drivers to the most grateful recipients, 50% of whom live alone, and along with requiring sustenance, crave human contact. The delivery person might be the only person they see that week, so sitting and chatting is an integral part of the Project Angel Food experience. Each client receives 7 meals delivered weekly (1 per day), with some exceptions, such as those on multiple medications or suffering from low body weight, who receive 14 meals weekly (2 per day). For congestive heart failure patients, MediCal pays for extra meals, allowing for those patients to receive 21 meals per week (3 per day) weekly, and West Hollywood residents suffering from other serious illnesses also receive 21 meals per week (3 per day,)paid for by the city. The result is healthier and stronger patients who make fewer hospital visits, saving California taxpayers thousands of dollars. In turn, MediCal gives back by putting that saved money toward the extra meals. HVV

The Project Angel Food Awards Each year, Project Angel Food holds a gala event presenting a humanitarian award to a significant person who has supported the project and shown longevity. Beginning just a year after the program was founded, the award has gone to some very special people, including Elizabeth Taylor who accepted the 10th award in 1999. Celebrating over 10 years of volunteers, and over 20,000 volunteers, the two millionth meal was served.

From celebrities to high profile individuals, the awards honor those who have given back. In 2017, Project Angel Food honored George Michael as the recipient of the award, posthumously, with a special tribute by Adam Lambert performing his songs. Each year the gala is held outside in the parking lot, instead of a lavish Hollywood hotel, making it one of the most unique in the city. However, just because it’s in the parking lot, doesn’t mean it’s not elegant. Chefs cook in the same kitchen that they prepare food daily, and tables and decorations transform the black asphalt into a magical function hall.

Two years later, in 2001, Elizabeth Taylor presented the award to Whoopi Goldberg as Project Angel Food The latest to accept the Project Angel Food award is Jamie celebrated 665 new clients and 724 new volunteers. Changing her filming schedule to appear, Curtis has shown what it is to be a humanitarian. “Much has been done and accomplished in the worldwide battle with HIV and AIDS, but there is much, much more to do,” Jamie Lee Curtis said, “I am humbled to be selected for recognition by the organization that has done as much as any individual or institution to focus on the daily care and feeding of these brave humans living and doing battle with this brutal disease. The Project Angel Food team, leaders, creators and delivery system personnel ALL deserve this recognition.”

Giving Back Celebrities don’t only accept awards, they volunteer. Lisa Vanderpump from Vanderpump Rules has been around since the beginning, volunteering 30 years ago. It was she who delivered the 12th million meal, and not only did she deliver it, but she cooked it for a man who, upon seeing her, reported to be a huge fan and who had voted for her on Dancing With The Stars.

“There is nowhere I would rather be than here,” Lisa said at the ceremony. “It is important that we do what we can to give back to the community.” With over 200 referral partners, such as Kaiser, the VA Hospital, dialysis centers, AHF, social workers and more, the program continues to grow.
