Director’s Message

Director’s Message It’s no secret our country has struggled to maintain health and wellness during the age of TV shows, computer games and fast food restaurants.

Luckily, Hillsboro Parks & Recreation has made a commitment to promote wellness within our community. With 24 beautiful parks, miles of

trails and a wide range of facilities offering fun and

interesting programming, there are plenty of ways to stay active.

An important element of wellness is getting outside. With national movements like Prescription Parks, the health benefits of visiting a park combat our sometimes unhealthy lifestyles. The trails and pathways running through our parks are perfect for a morning jog, afternoon walk, or a

leisurely evening bike ride. With Oregon weather we recognize that exercising outside isn’t always practical in our beautiful, albeit rainy state. Fortunately Hillsboro Parks & Recreation offers a

variety of fitness classes at our indoor facilities, including everything from yoga to kick boxing.

We also hope to eventually build new community recreation center at 53rd Avenue Park to even

better meet the indoor recreation needs of our growing community.

In 2009, Hillsboro banned the use of tobacco products on park property as a major step to promote healthy lifestyles. More recently, the Hillsboro Parks & Recreation Commission and City Council

approved a ban on the use of electronic cigarettes and other nicotine vaporizing devices at our parks

and facilities. This action took effect on August 1. Recently, electronic cigarettes (e-cigs) have gained

popularity, particularly among young adults. Long-term effects of secondhand exposure to the vapor these devices expel are unclear, but they do contain several known toxins, and are easily mistaken

for regular cigarettes. We think this action will help create a positive atmosphere for youth in our community and will assist in protecting the health of all park users.

So, this fall, get active and explore a new park, take a new class and breathe in the crisp, clean autumn air.

A Visit with Santa

Tell Santa your Christmas wishes and have your picture taken (bring your own camera). While visiting Santa, enjoy arts, crafts and holiday music. Bring the whole family to participate in Hillsboro Holly Days and Winter Marketplace from 1 – 6 pm. The Civic Center Plaza bustles with holiday cheer and excitement leading up to the awe-inspiring tree lighting ceremony at 5:30 pm.

SHARC Birthday Parties

All Ages The multi-purpose room at SHARC is a private space for your birthday party with a TV/DVD player, sink, refrigerator and tables & chairs for up to 20 guests. You may bring in your own food for the party. Reservations must be made at SHARC in person at least one week in advance. Rental includes time for set-up and clean-up.

A $50 refundable cleaning deposit is required at the time of the reservation.

This rental fee, admission to the recreation swim and the refundable deposit are all due at time of reservation.

Tyson Recreation Center Rentals

Rent space at Tyson Recreation Center for your event. Equipment includes play structures, gym mats, balls, sound system, TV/DVD, tables and chairs. Play equipment is designed for children 5 and under, but the facility can accommodate other age groups. A staff person is available to help you set up, monitor your event and check your cleanup. Tables & chairs are available for food and drinks in the East Room. Reservation must be at least seven days in advance.

Rentals are limited to a maximum of 35 people.

Internationally recognized dancer and choreographer Javier Solis will teach basic salsa steps and perform with his children’s salsa group, The Little Geminis. Black Girl in Suburbia Screening and Discussion

This film explores, through professional and personal interviews, the conflict and issues black girls have relating to both white and black communities. Hillsboro Ski Club transports snowboarders and skiers in grades K through 12 (and their parents, if desired) to Mt. Hood Meadows for recreational skiing on Saturdays. We offer two four-week sessions: the first session begins on January 10, 2015 and the second session begins on February 7, 2015.

The club offers program packages for all skill levels with discounts on lessons, lifts, rentals or combinations of these services. Transportation is by luxury coach and departs Poynter Middle School at 6:15 am on Saturday mornings. Buses are chaperoned and advisors monitor the on-site medical clinic hourly. This program is for students and their parents.

The Intramural Sports Program is offered at all middle schools and is an introductory athletic experience. It is not intended to be a highly intense, competitive program. Sportsmanship and teamwork are taught and closely managed at all competitions. Perfect attendance is not mandatory but is encouraged to allow participants to have a positive experience. En plein air is a French phrase meaning in the open air, and refers to the tradition of taking one’s palette and brushes (or other art-making tools) and creating art on-site in the great outdoors. Artwork from this exhibit comes from the annual Hillsboro Plein Air event, which brings local artists together to create new plein air works at vibrant outdoor locations in the region. The event has been expanded this year to incorporate a variety of artistic mediums–hence: Plein Air Plus.

Our journey to the Gorge Discovery Center in The Dalles includes a live raptor show and plenty of time to browse the center, which showcases 10,000 years of fascinating natural and cultural history of the Columbia River. The center and museum highlight experiences related to Lewis and Clark, Native Americans, pioneers, fishing and logging, as well as the area’s wildflowers and wildlife. Dance for Parkinson’s Oregon Class

Dance is not only art but exercise, and current research has shown that exercise is beneficial to the Parkinson’s population. Dance for Parkinson’s Oregon classes integrate movement from multiple dance forms, music of all styles and theatre and vocal games which stimulate and develop the mind, memory, body, and voice. This class begins in chairs and eventually moves to the dance barre and the center floor.

People at all mobility levels and with any movement disorder are welcome. The class can be done in a wheelchair, with a walker or seated and standing. A partner is not required but one care person per class participant is welcome at no additional charge. Now is the perfect time to think about and plan for the upcoming flu season to avoid potential health risks. The flu poses a very serious health risk to all ages of the population. Preventative measures, like the flu shot, are the best way to gain protection against the flu.

Get your questions about medications and vaccinations answered by Rite Aid pharmacists. The Centers for Disease Control for recommends flu vaccination and pneumococcal (pneumonia) vaccine for seniors over age 60. Get vaccinated onsite, if you choose. The Outdoor Pool is closed from September – June. The pool features two diving boards and two childsized slides. The pool is a steady 84°.

The Main Indoor Pool is heated to 84° and features an L–shaped design featuring a diving board in the 12 foot deep end and a 3.5 foot shallow end. The pool features our 117 foot curving water slide and a diving board.

The 88° Warm Water Pool has a railed ramp and railings in the 4’6” deep end to aid swimmers with accessibility and in water therapy.

The pool offers a teacup feature with warm water spilling from overhead.

Children 7 years and under must be accompanied in by an adult in the water at all times.

The Spa Pool, kept at 103° and a co– ed Dry Sauna are both available for use by patrons ages 16 and over.

Locker Rooms and Changing Rooms

Both men’s and women’s changing rooms and over 200 lockers are available for your use. In addition, four ADA accessible family changing rooms are available. Please respect the needs of these users and families with children of opposite gender.

Land Amenities

Land amenities at SHARC include workout facilities, cardio and weight room equipment.

The Cardio Room is equipped with workout machines such as climbers, ellipticals, stationary bikes, rowing machines, treadmills and more. For those who prefer free weights, a selection of those is available as well.

The cardio room is available on a first come, first served basis.

SHARC offers a number of classes in the Group

including spin, Cardio Jam, yoga, Pilates and many more. A full schedule of classes is available at SHARC.

Child care is provided in the Kid Fit Room. Children are cared for in a safe, nurturing environment while their parents remain on the premises working out. For further details on the Kid Fit Room, see page 41.

Personal Training & Massage SHARC offers specialized opportunities such as personal training, drop–in exercise and massage. These opportunities are listed throughout pages 41 & 48.

Facility Information

SHARC Rentals

Make your event special with a rental at SHARC. The multi-purpose rooms are available for parties, meetings, corporate events and much more. All facility rentals must be booked in person at least 7 days in advance. For facility rental prices, available times, or for more information, please see our website or call 503-681-6127. See our birthday party information on page 3 in this guide.

SHARC multi-purpose rooms can be configured to hold a maximum of either 20 or 50 people. For your convenience, the following items are available with your rental: chairs and tables, TV and DVD player, refrigerator/freezer/sink and counter space and dry erase board.

Kid Fit Room

SHARC provides on–site child care for children ages 4 months–8 years in the Kid Fit Room while their parent/ guardian is at SHARC. While a child is in the Kid Fit Room, they enjoy games, puzzles, toys, crafts and other ageappropriate activities. Space is limited, so reservations are recommended. Call 503-681-6127.

General Locker Room Information

• Please bring your own lock. Combo locks and key locks are available for purchase.

• Children 3 years and under are allowed in the opposite gender locker rooms.

• All locks left on lockers after the facility closes are cut off and not replaced. SHARC is not responsible for lost or stolen items.

• Cameras and video functions are not to be used in the locker rooms at any time.

Appropriate Swimming Attire

• All persons using pools and spa must wear a swimsuit.

• No cotton, shorts, cut-offs, tank tops, shirts or undergarments allowed in pools and spa.

• Infants and toddlers who are not potty trained must wear a swim diaper covered by a waterproof, leak-proof vinyl diaper cover.

• Only Coast Guard approved life jackets are allowed as flotation devices.

• Water Wings, inflatable tubes, or swimsuits with integrated flotation devices (whether sewn in or not) and similar devices are not allowed in the pools.

Electric Eel: Entry level, basic personal water safety, students may be supported, no prerequisites required.

Frog: Ability to float on front and back for 5 seconds.

Learn American Red Cross protocols and techniques for patron surveillance, water rescue, first aid and CPR/AED skills necessary to save lives in or around water. American Red Cross certification fees are included. Participants must pass a pre-requisite skills test that includes a 300 yard swim, retrieving a 10 lb brick from the bottom of the pool and treading water with no hands for two minutes. Nutritional Counseling

16 years – Adult (Ages 13 – 15 with adult present) SHARC’s nutritional counselor is ready to work with you. Schedule a nutritional consultation to discuss proper eating habits, daily caloric intake based on your body and activity level, meal choices and planning, changes needed for your daily diet and setting realistic goals to achieve your wellness needs. Nutritional Counseling appointments require a 24 hour cancellation notice, a loss of session or fee may be assessed without one.

This one hour session is designed to help SHARC members (16 years and older) learn the proper form and technique for the weight equipment. This level is for moderately active older adults who exercise in some way one to two days per week. The class is designed to increase the participant’s flexibility, joint stability, dynamic balance, coordination, agility, reaction time, muscular strength and cardiovascular endurance.

To meet the needs of the independent older adult, strength, endurance, mobility and flexibility are end goals of the workout. Chairs are available for support.

Contact us to request your login information at 503-681-6120 or come into any of our facilities during business hours to obtain your Account I.D. and PIN. If you have ever registered for a program with Hillsboro Parks and Recreation, you already have an account with us and need this information to register. Once you have your Account I.D. and PIN, you are able to use it to view your account, browse our wide array of programs and classes and register 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Payment method is by Visa, MasterCard or Discover.

Phone – in registration for fall programs begins August 19 and can be taken weekdays from 8:30 am – 4:30 pm by calling 503-681-5397. If all lines are busy, please defer your call to a later time if possible. Payment method is by Visa, MasterCard or Discover. Have all registration information ready when you call. Register for your immediate family ONLY. One family per phone call.

Fee/Cancellation/Refund Policy All fees are collected during registration. Cash, check and Visa, MasterCard or Discover are accepted. Resident is defined as any individual living within the city limits of Hillsboro. All classes have a minimum enrollment and may be cancelled as early as 10 days before the class starts if the minimum enrollment is not met. Full refunds or credits are given when a class cancels or is postponed. When a recreation class refund is requested by the participant, the refund is prorated from the date of the request; a service charge of $5.00 applies. No refunds or credits are given after a swim lesson has begun. Please allow up to four weeks to receive a refund. No cash refunds.

Wait Lists If a class is filled before we receive your registration, we inform you and suggest your name be added to a wait list. If openings become available, we fill the class from the names on the wait list. 48 hours after notification, if we have not received your registration your place in the class is forfeit and the next person on the wait list is notified.

Participant Waiver The City of Hillsboro is providing parks and recreation services to registered participants. As part of the payment for these services, the participant assumes all risks of personal injury, death and property damage resulting from the provision of these by the city of Hillsboro and its agents. Participant releases Hillsboro and its agents from any liability to the participant for personal injury, death or property damage arising out of the provision of these services to the participant by the City and its agents. The City does not provide insurance coverage to the participant for this activity.

Glencoe Creek Park 2955 NE 15th Ave.

Located along Northeast 15th Avenue at Prahl Parkway, the 2.2 acre Glencoe Creek Park is bounded on the north by the Emma Jones Nature Preserve. Its open, sloping lawn area with picnic shelter set

against the natural preserve is a beautiful place to spend a summer afternoon, and the park includes a

full-sized basketball court, perfect for pickup games. The playground equipment includes three slides, a swingset, and interactive play equipment. The shelter is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

The park property, which was purchased in 1999, was part of the original Jones Farm property before being residentially zoned and subdivided for housing lots. Developed and opened in 2002, Glencoe

Creek Park’s serene setting near Intel’s Jones Farm Campus is an ideal setting for a lunchtime picnic or an afternoon stroll. The park is open from dawn till dusk.
