Hillsboro loves its sheep! Artist Jed Berk’s endearing creatures sparked the imagination of people throughout the community who flocked to the barn on the lawn of the Walters Cultural Arts Center or to their local library to check out a sheep. As a part of Hillsboro Arts Month, the sheep went to plays and concerts, hiked at Silver Falls, crushed grapes at a vineyard, explored downtown and faced down a coyote at Jackson Bottom Wetlands.

The project, entitled Champion Flock of Weed Eaters, was commissioned by the Hillsboro Public Art Program, part of City of Hillsboro Parks & Recreation, with the goal of inviting residents to create an album of life in our community. Takeaway message? We are a creative and fun-loving lot! Here are some of the sheep’s adventures!

Arts Organizations Encouraged to Apply for Grants Community-based arts and cultural organizations have a tremendous impact on their participants and audiences they serve. But many feel a constant pressure to create new programs in order to qualify for grant funding. Too frequently grant funds for small organizations are only available for new projects.

Organizations may feel that it doesn’t matter if what they are doing is successful and meaningful and mission-focused. That pressure to create a project just to qualify for funding can take organizations away from their real work.

The Hillsboro Arts & Culture Council believes that is a problem. We want to support the successful, mission-focused work of cultural organizations in Hillsboro. We do that by offering two types of grants: Project Grants and Core Support Grants. For our project grants we invite any organization that operates as a non-profit and provides arts and cultural experiences to the Greater Hillsboro Community to apply for a grant of up to $3,000. Projects can be recurring events, or similar to a previous event. We do not require that an organization has to create something new each year. One of the goals for project grants is to increase arts and cultural access for underserved populations, so projects effectively targeting those groups are especially compelling.

Last year we expanded our grants program to include Core Support Grants. These grants offer a higher level of funding for arts and cultural organizations based in Hillsboro. With our Core Support grants we are investing in the mission of an organization rather than a project description. We believe that by providing core support, our grants will allow organizations to take the next steps to further their artistic excellence or service to the community.

Turning Up the Volume on the Hills For music lovers of all stripes—whether you are a sip and listener or a serious music aficionado, the Hillsboro music scene is growing. Full concerts are available in classical, jazz, Americana and other genres and a number of local eateries are enlivening their nights with music. Check out one of these performances or venues in the coming months.

Hillsboro Community Youth Choir On March 11, the Hillsboro Community Youth Choir will be performing a concert filled with Rodgers and Hammerstein’s beloved songs from The Sound of Music. “The *Hills* are Alive!” will include special collaborations and surprises.

Their spring concert May 21, “Taking Flight” includes selections

by Diane Abdi Robertson, as well as “I’ll Fly” and “Flying Free” by Don Besig. Tickets may be purchased at hillsborocommunityyouthchoir.org in advance or at the door. Both concerts will be at the Century High School auditorium.

The Hillsboro Symphony Orchestra performs three concerts a year at the Hillsboro High School Auditorium. Their

sboro Music Scene March 18 concert pays tribute to William Shakespeare’s 400th birthday with “Shakespeare in Music.” They will be performing “Scherzo” from Midsummer Night’s Dream

by Felix Mendelssohn; “Ariette” from Romeo and Juliet by Gounod; Westside Story selections by Leonard Bernstein; and “Trumpet Voluntary” by Henry Purcell. Tickets are available at Mir Music or at the door.

Westside Community and Youth Orchestra The Westside Community and Youth Orchestra is a community orchestra, including musicians from high school through retirement. They will be presenting a concert of Epic Oscar Legends on Friday, May 6 in the Liberty High School Auditorium. The concert is made for movie lovers with music from Star Wars, ET, Titanic, Indian Jones, and more. Best of all, their concerts are free!

Influence Music Hall hosts the original Open Mic Night in Hillsboro, every Friday from 7 to 10:30 pm. They have over 1200 square feet of Rock-n-Roll, Jazz, Pop, Folk, Political, Spiritual, Environmental, Easy Listening, Blues, and Punk. Now under new ownership, the Orenco Station Grill features local jazz singers and groups to complement its locallysourced food on Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday night.

Music in Small spaces is non-profit organization dedicated to making chamber music accessible to all by producing high-caliber musical performances in low cost and accessible locations.

In February 2016 they will be offering a free series of performance lectures at the Hillsboro Main Library on Saturdays at 2pm. On February 6 Jesse McCann will demonstrate a very short history of the guitar. Enjoy tales of Backstage Hijinks from the Portland Opera on February 13, including plain English explanations. Finally, on February 27, take part in a Percussion Exploration as Dr. Florian Conzetti demonstrates most of the percussion section. All of these performances are free and designed for families.

Oregon Chorale This 50-voice chorus sings everything from classical music to spirituals, Broadway favorites to Christmas classics. After 30 years of performing in Hillsboro, the Oregon Chorale is celebrating the approach of spring with a concert filled with “Songs from Nature” on March 13. The concert featuring works from the Americas, including Randall Thompson’s Frostiana and John Corigliano’s Fern Hill, will be held at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church at 447 SE 3rd Avenue.

Coyote’s has been a long time spot for Hillsboro residents to have fun with cover bands on Friday and Saturday nights.

Orenco Station Grill

Pizzario This funky wood-fired pizza spot is owned and operated by local musician Mike Soto of 23 Window, so it is no surprise to find Pizzario featuring live music on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights, as well as inviting the community to make their own music with a Sunday night Open Mic Night. 337 E Main Street.

Primrose & Tumbleweeds Downtown Hillsboro’s Primrose & Tumbleweeds features live music Friday nights as well as the world’s largest selection of Oregon wines. They recently added an Open Mic Night on Saturdays. 248 E. Main Street.

Walters Cultural Art Center Concert Series The Walters is the westside’s premiere concert venue. Their concert series showcases established names and emerging artists from across the country, and includes modern Americana, opera, fingerstyle guitar, bluegrass, Celtic and more. Year round, the Walters Gallery showcases a diverse selection of artwork by both established and emerging artists. Opening receptions for the artists and general public are held on the first Tuesday of each month and provide an opportunity to meet the artist(s) and foster exciting dialogues about art and creativity. The work of Larry Cwik traverses the five coastal nations of the Arctic, capturing the ingenuity and challenge of life and the changing conditions of the region. Though remote and little-visited by outsiders, the ecology of the Arctic is critically intertwined with the ecology of the Northern Hemisphere—and the planet as a whole. To most of the world, the stories of the communities who live there remain untold. This exhibit provides a necessary and timely window into this foreboding but beautiful place, as photographed during Cwik’s travels throughout the U.S., Canada, Greenland, Norway, and Russia. Cwik’s photographs stir reflection about our global relationship to the people and ecology of the Far North, and remind us of the delicate interconnectedness of our planet’s people and places. This work is partially funded by the Regional Arts and Culture Council.

The vibrant artwork from this exhibit highlights the artistic accomplishments of women artists from the village of Weya, Zimbabwe.

These women are subsistence farmers, mothers, and householders as well as artists. The embroideries and paintings from this exhibit give a rich glimpse of the artists’ lives in their own words. In addition, biographies for each of the artists offers a deeper connection to a woman a world away. The Zimbabwe Artists Project is a nonprofit organization partnering with women in Zimbabwe, buying artwork and supporting self-enterprise.

Susan Aurand February 2 – March 28 Susan Aurand’s striking collection of mixed-media paintings explores nature as a language of forms largely forgotten in our modern, urbanized world. Aurand’s work offers a visually arresting and lyric passage through which to explore the Self and its embeddedness in the physical world, and to examine our inseparability from other creatures and the ecosystem that sustains us all. This collection weaves a layered and nuanced web of meanings—some images are more psychological in their use of imagery, while others more explicitly reference the devastating effects of habitat loss on particular species, while yet other images function purely as points of meditation designed to enable the viewer to move past ecological grief into deeper connection with the natural world of which he or she is a part.

Al Crane combines still lifes, film, and digital photography to form an intimate and haunting collection of images that explores ideas of impermanence, childhood, and the natural passage of the time. To create these images, the artist scans natural elements and found objects on a flatbed scanner, digitally combining his own images along with vintage photographs or tintypes. These layered compositions reflect private yet universal narratives, inviting viewers to connect with their own journeys in time.

Check out a collection of quilts with a focus on community outreach from the Westside Quilters Guild in our downstairs gallery space. WQG is a public charity, originator of the Quilt Barn Trail of Washington County, and member of the Oregon Cultural Trust, and is a vibrant addition to the arts community of Washington County. Third Tuesday: Spoken Word Series

The Spoken Word Series highlights the power and art of the oral tradition in its myriad of forms: live storytelling, artist talks, lectures, readings, discussions and more. Selected guests deliver performances and talks on a wide variety of topics pertaining to art and culture.

Spoken Word events take place every other month in the Walters Theatre (unless otherwise mentioned) to allow for larger audiences. As always, Spoken Word performances and discussions are free and open to the public.

Free Verse: An Evening of Poetry & Improv Tuesday, February 16 | 7 pm

Join us in the Walters Theatre for an enriching evening of cross-genre entertainment by The Brody Ensemble and selected guest poets. Hosted by poet Coleman Stevenson and actor Aspen Farer, FREE VERSE is part literary reading, part spontaneous theater.

Stories for the Equinox: Wise, Wicked and Willful Women With Storyteller Batya Podos Tuesday, June 21 | 7 pm

Celebrate the Spring Equinox with tales of wise, wicked and willful women, told by storyteller Batya Podos.

With over 40 years of experience as a storyteller, teacher and writer, Batya tells stories from many cultures designed to inspire and entertain.

These tales of silkies and spirits, of cunning women and girls determined to craft their own destinies, balance the light and dark that occur on the Spring Equinox when the night and the day are of equal length and in balance. With so many of us balancing so many things in our lives these days, hearing stories allows us to slow down a little and to open our hearts and imaginations.

Note: Families are welcome but these tales are recommended for older youth and adults.

Main Street Bridge Aglow with New Lighting

If you ever wondered where the rainbow ends, it is in Hillsboro! Beginning at sunset and continuing to midnight, a rainbow of colorful lights now greets pedestrians, drivers, and MAX train passengers traveling through Hillsboro. Vivid colors slowly move across the arch, providing beauty—but not distraction—to drivers.

“The Main Street Bridge is a landmark coming into Hillsboro,” said Valerie Otani, Hillsboro Public Art Supervisor.

“We want to include public art throughout our community, and this helps to further identify the bridge as a gateway to Downtown Hillsboro and a unique feature of the Central Hillsboro neighborhood.”

Once a wooden trestle railroad bridge, the Main Street Bridge was an innovative solution to allow light rail to pass over the roadway without a center support. Historically, the dip in the road had caused many accidents in icy weather as cars slid into the center post. When light rail came to Hillsboro, fourteen bridge alternatives were considered, and the arch proved to be both economically competitive and aesthetically pleasing. When it was constructed in 1997, it was the only reinforced concrete arch supporting a major transportation facility.

For many years, the city maintained small blue lights that outlined the arch, but the aging light fixtures were literally crumbling. Supervising City Electrician JD Kemper said, “In the past we had to get a permit to shut down the light rail in the middle of the night, rent a large lift and have two guys trying to change as many light bulbs as they could in the short time before the trains started running again.” Now, LED projectors create a changing light show, while saving the annual maintenance cost of changing hundreds of individual light bulbs.

Implemented with the help of many creative thinkers, the new lighting is a cost effective replacement for aging infrastructure that also creates a spectacular light show every night.

Colleen Raney Shares Her Passion for Traditional Irish Music

“When does a Very Good Singer become A Great Singer? Well, if you’re Portland, Ore. resident Colleen Raney, that time is now.”

Colleen Raney credits her exciting career journey as a singer to hard work, formative arts education opportunities, and driving passion and love for the music and the culture of Ireland. She recently returned from a three month residency there, where she immersed herself in Irish music and culture to learn, as well as to elevate her music and performances. Raney will perform the final concert in the 2015-16 Walters Concert series with her band, Story Road on Friday, May 20.

You have remained true to the legacy of the Irish music and have received accolades throughout the world for your renditions of these songs. What drives this passion and respect?

We (Raney + Little Sea Records) are about highlighting the joy inherent in the Irish psyche. Then, having the respect for the legacy—and generations of people who have come before you— who have studied this music and mastered it as well.

You received your master’s degree in Theatre. How relevant was your education to what you are doing today?

One of the things that continues to stay with me from my education and career training in the arts was to be generative and never wait around for someone to make work for you. If you can create opportunity for yourself vs. opportunities being handed to you, you will be a more satisfied artist. It was also about learning to be a contributing artist – where you have to be able, capable of—and willing to learn all of the other parts that go into what you are doing.

In addition to your performances, you and Hanz Araki run Little Sea Records, promoting the music of Ireland, Scotland, England and beyond. What are your goals with this endeavor?

What we try to do is create an environment in Portland where we would love to step in anywhere else in the world. Where you know your music is going to reach your audience and there are people on the ground going to bat for you.

BodyVox: Endless Possibilities of the Human Body in Motion Portland’s BodyVox is one of the most progressive and acclaimed dance companies in the country. Led by Emmy Award winning choreographers Jamey Hampton and Ashley Roland, the company is known for its visual virtuosity, distinctive wit, and unique ability to combine dance, theatre, and film into breathtaking productions rich in imagery, athleticism, and humor. Since its founding in 1997, the company has toured to critical acclaim on stages around the world and developed 8 award winning films, 27 original shows, and 3 operas, featuring more than 200 original dances. With a focus on community and educational outreach, BodyVox returns to the Walters this spring for a performance on Friday, April 1.

BodyVox Artistic Directors Ashley Roland and Jamey Hampton shared their thoughts about the company with Walters staff member Gayle Ritt, including insights into their creative process, the positive impact of community relationships, and their artistic vision with young people and the schools.

Why do you think BodyVox appeals to such a wide ranging audience?

We appeal to a wide ranging audience because we work hard to make our shows make a very human connection.

You do not need to know anything about dance to enjoy our performances. Jamey and I have always created from a place of, “if it’s entertaining to us, it’s going to be entertaining to 14

our audience, so therefore, let’s makes this really—fill in the blank here with the appropriate descriptive given the theme of the piece—beautiful, funny, sad, mysterious, etc.”

How do you two continue to move forward with new and creative shows? What do you draw from to feed your inspiration?

We are constantly creating, whether it is in our home choosing paint, in the studio, or parenting, our lives are full of creative decisions. We discovered many years ago the gift of collaboration, and it takes selflessness, trust, and respect. We deeply appreciate those attributes in each other, so when one of us suggests an idea, the other supports it, or gives an honest but respectful, critical eye. We call it tossing the ball back and forth. Sometimes you catch it and run all the way to a touch down or maybe you fumble, but your teammate is there to assist.

What is your inspiration to create film projects in addition to the live work you do onstage?

We have always loved film. Dance on film can be so different from dance on stage, there are so many opportunities to escape the confines of a typical theater. Also, as a viewer, the audience can get transported out of their immediate reality, given a visual breath of fresh air, or even a break. Our films sew the evening together so our shows become journeys with destinations and not long rides with many stops.

What is it about Portland that keeps the company here?

Portland has allowed us to fulfill our artistic vision, given

its livability—while at the same time it’s been a charming, wonderful, and unique city helping to support our uniqueness.

Why do you think it’s important to work with community partners?

The arts needs to be seen by the art lovers and the art curious. You may find both at any venue, but the smaller communities may have a few more of the latter. Sometimes you need to communicate to the smaller communities, the grassroots, to support the building of a greater community of art supporters.

Tell us about your involvement with the schools and touring to bring BodyVox to audiences that may otherwise not be able to see such a unique dance company.

This is something we love to do. We have been doing this for the 18 years we have been BodyVox and we have performed for over 100,000 children from around the country. The questions they ask, the applause and the laughter they give us is inspirational. They fulfill us and really let us know that the art that we bring into their world touches them. And we can only hope that they take it with them to fuel their creative future.

BodyVox performances are known for their passion and energy – what drives you to keep that level of excitement moving forward year after year?

We love what we do.

Meet Nicholas Kessler Nicholas Kessler is a third generation teacher who has studied classic theater in Greece, method acting in Manhattan, and improv in the Midwest. He is now passing down the art of drama—and the many lasting benefits that come with it—to youth and adults in Hillsboro.

In addition to being a regular performer at Portland Center Stage and host of OPB’s The Moth StorySLAM, Kessler is a founding member of The Liberators, a group that the Portland Mercury recently described as “one of the best improv groups anywhere.” In August 2015, The Liberators played a sold out show at the Stumptown Improv Festival, and in October they celebrated the grand opening of The Siren Theater, their brand new venue in downtown Portland.

Hillsboro Leaders Came Out to Celebrate the Arts

On October 1, 2015 the Hillsboro Arts & Culture Council celebrated the arts by presenting our first award from the Arts and Culture Endowment Fund. The event, kicking off Hillsboro Arts Month, was attended by City leaders, including the Mayor and City Council as well representatives from local community arts organizations and supporters of the Endowment.

All were on hand to applaud as the Hillsboro Community Youth Choir received the inaugural Endowment Award.

What Does Art Mean to Hillsboro?

The City of Hillsboro has an active history of supporting the arts as a way to enhance livability. In fact, the City’s guiding document, the Hillsboro 2020 Vision and Action Plan, calls for over a dozen initiatives in the cultural arts sector alone. Highest on that list are the creation of a cultural arts center, an arts council and a public art program. Within the pages of the HillsboroARTS Magazine, you will see the dreams of 2020 becoming reality through creative programs, events, classes, concerts, gallery exhibitions, community grants and public art works Glenn & Viola Walters Cultural Arts Center

The Walters opened on March 16, 2004. Located at the corner of SE 5th Avenue and Main Street, this site has a rich history of community involvement that began when the Trinity Lutheran Church started construction of the church building in 1947.

The Walters is a ground-breaking facility that provides expanded opportunities for the entire Hillsboro community, including: youth and adult art education and training, increased access to local, regional and national artists and increased opportunity for individual artists to teach and demonstrate their craft. It is the first site constructed in Hillsboro with the intention of showcasing cultural events and providing community-centered arts education.

Hillsboro Arts & Culture Council

The HACC mission is to promote and support the growth of arts and culture as assets for a vital, prosperous and livable community.

The Hillsboro Arts & Culture Council (HACC) first convened in the spring of 2007. This citizen advisory committee is appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by City Council. Under the general direction of the City Council, the HACC oversees policies and programs pertaining to arts and culture for the City. It is housed in the Parks and Recreation Department and is administered by the Cultural Arts Program Manager.

In 2012, the HACC established the Hillsboro Arts & Culture Endowment in partnership with the Hillsboro Community Foundation to create long-term stable funding for our creative community.

Public art is a part of our mental map of Hillsboro, creating the memorable public places that strengthen our community. Art can attract us to downtown, enliven our neighborhoods, enhance our experiences in parks, remind us of our history, and celebrate our ethnic and cultural diversity.

Public art can take many forms - landscape treatments, building facades, freestanding sculptures, murals, lighting and more. It can be permanent or temporary. Often, art is an unexpected discovery that lifts us out of the ordinary and brings a moment of intrigue and delight to our day.

HillsboroARTS Mission HillsboroARTS is produced three times a year to inform our patrons and complement the Hillsboro Parks & Recreation Activities Guide. This publication will help you plan your schedule with our activities, events, and classes in mind.
