Director’s Message

Director’s Message Public art is a powerful tool for helping make Hillsboro a special place. Memorable public places strengthen our community. Such places attract us to downtown, enliven our neighborhoods, enhance our parks, inform us about historic people and places, and celebrate our ethnic and cultural diversity. With strong City Council support, Hillsboro Parks & Recreation’s Public Art Program did just that in 2014.

Dancing Chairs, a sculpture by local artist James Schmidt moved from its temporary location downtown to 53rd Avenue Community Park, bringing a touch of whimsy to one of our busiest parks.

Beautiful gates now welcome people to the new David Hill Community Garden. In partnership with the Hillsboro School District, the Public Art Program brought artist Suzanne Lee in to help Miller Education Center students create silhouettes of fruits and vegetables that were incorporated into the intricate designs of the gates. A staff member described the gates as “a great way to welcome people to the garden and create a gathering place for educational activities.”

Opening summer 2015 is Orenco Station Plaza, a new urban plaza that features overhead artwork with colored light playing on the delicate forms of plum blossoms, reminding us of the history of the famed Oregon Nursery Company, better known as Orenco. The plaza was designed with significant public input, and will provide a vibrant flexible, gathering place for the community, with restaurants and coffee shops spilling onto the space. In addition to public art, key features include a water feature, decorative lighting, moveable site furniture and an elevated boardwalk with seating beneath two mature oak trees. Various festivals, markets, small concerts, and cultural events are planned. One in particular is a signature Harvest Festival slated for fall 2015. These events will further animate the plaza, and provide a unique destination in Hillsboro.

The Public Art Program in Parks and Recreation aims to create memorable places throughout the city, like the neighborhood gateways at David Hill Community Garden or Jackson Bottom North Viewing Area.

Also in the works for 2015 and 2016 are more dramatic gateways at Main Street Bridge and Brookwood Overcrossing on Highway 26 that will announce that you have arrived in our amazing city. As you travel through the city, we hope that you appreciate the beauty that these art projects contribute to Hillsboro.

Underwater EGGstravaganza

All Comers Family 5k Series debuts its third season at Shute Park Saturday, May 30. Lace up those shoes and gather the family to run, walk, hop or skip your way to the finish line!

1 – 12 years

Join us for an EGGcellent time hunting Easter eggs and treasures in our warm water pool. Special prizes found in each egg. The Easter Bunny makes a special appearance and is available for pictures. All Easter eggs and treasures are in the water at the hunt start times.

Parent participation required in the water for children 7 years and younger.

Pre-registration required. Swim suit required to hunt for eggs in the pool.

SHARC Birthday Parties

All Ages The multi-purpose room at SHARC is a private space for your birthday party with a TV/DVD player, sink, refrigerator and tables and chairs for up to 20 guests. You may bring in your own food for the party.

Reservations must be made at SHARC in person at least one week in advance. Rental includes time for set-up and clean-up. A $50 refundable cleaning deposit is required at the time of the reservation. This rental fee, admissions to the recreation swim, and the refundable deposit are all due at time of reservation.

Fee: $35/hour Resident, $50/hour Non-Resident

Admissions to the Recreation Swim are $3.75 per child and $4.75 per adult and are not included in the rental fee.

Rent Outdoors In for your next event! Your rental includes full use of the playground equipment for the duration of your event as well as use of the refrigerator/freezer, TV, Blu-Ray, tables and chairs.

Your guests enjoy a full-size playground, NEOS (an interactive, whole-body gaming system), a 16’ bouldering wall, and many toys while your event takes place.

Tyson Recreation Center Rentals

Rent space at Tyson Recreation Center for your next event. Equipment includes play structures, gym mats, balls, sound system, TV/DVD, tables and chairs. Play equipment is designed for children 5 and under, but the facility can accommodate other age groups. A staff person is available to help you set up, monitor your event and check your clean up. Tables and chairs are available for food and drinks in the East Room.

Reservation must be made in person at least seven days in advance. Rentals are limited to a maximum of 35 people.

Spring Break Dance Camp 4 – 12 years

Keep your feet moving while learning different styles of dance including hip hop, jazz, and ballet. Play games, make arts & crafts, and other fun activities. Parents are encouraged to come watch a performance at the end of the week showcasing what the dancers have learned. Participants must wear athletic clothing including athletic shoes, bring a water bottle, a snack for every day (am and pm), plus a lunch for the full/extended hours. We are seeking 3 – 4 parent volunteers from either 9 am – 12 pm or 12 – 3 pm any/every day to assist instructors with class organization, breaks, games, and arts & crafts.

Take the Stage Spring Break Camp

Keep your feet moving while learning different styles of dance including hip hop, jazz, and ballet. Play games, arts & crafts, and do other fun activities. Parents are encouraged to come watch a performance at the end of the week showcasing what the dancers have learned. Participants must wear athletic clothing including athletic shoes, bring a water bottle, a snack for every day (am and pm), plus a lunch for the full/extended hours. Dress for the weather as we walk the trails and find signs of spring all around. Binoculars are back to help us find as many signs of spring as possible. Look for birds, small mammals and insects as the park becomes more active with the return of spring.

Boxing Conditioning

Beginning Gymnastics

Active and fun describes this indoor/outdoor instructional sports program which is designed to promote the mental and physical development for all involved. Learn the fundamentals of each sport, basic motor skills through drills, and the concept of playing a game.

Emphasis is placed on teamwork and sportsmanship. Participants must wear athletic shoes and bring a water bottle.

Learn boxing skills and technique, increase muscular/cardio endurance and core strength, and burn off more than just calories. Use the heavy bags, jump ropes, and sparring mitts. Hand wraps, mouth guards, and a towel are mandatory.

Boys and girls learn beginning gymnastics skills for floor, beam, bars and vault. Skill building stations and obstacle courses are used to increase strength, flexibility, coordination, and body awareness. Registration ends the Thursday before the next Gym-Nest session begins.

Hillsboro Ski Club 2014-2015 Season

Hillsboro Ski Club transports snowboarders and skiers in grades K through 12 (and their parents, if desired) to Mt. Hood Meadows for recreational skiing on Saturdays. We offer two four-week sessions: the first begins on January 10 and the second session begins on February 7, 2015.

The club offers program packages for all skill levels with discounts on lessons, lifts, rentals or combinations of these services. Transportation is by luxury coach and leaves from Poynter Middle School at 6:15 am on Saturday mornings. Buses are chaperoned and advisors monitor the on-site medical clinic hourly. This program is for students and their parents only.

The co-ed 1st and 2nd grade program develops and emphasizes basic catching, throwing, cradling and ground ball pick-up skills. This level uses soft balls, has no contact, and plays no organized games. Practices are on Saturdays from 8:45 – 9:45 am from 4/25 – 6/6 at the 53rd Avenue Sports Fields.

Grades 3 – 8 are divided by gender and grade. Teams are formed using high school attendance boundaries. Practices are on weeknights at Hillsboro schools and games are on Saturdays at 53rd Avenue Fields and in the Portland area. The season runs through early June.

Middle School Intramural Sports Program

The Intramural Sports Program is offered at all middle schools and is an introductory athletic experience. It is not intended to be a highly intense, competitive program. Sportsmanship and teamwork are taught and closely managed at all competitions. Perfect attendance is not mandatory but is encouraged to allow participants to have a positive experience. February 3 – March 23 This collection of scrolls by Karen Swallow Karen Swallow explores the thematic symbol of the waterfall through the mediums of sumi ink, rice paper, beeswax encaustic, and calligraphy. This body of work reflects the significant influence of eastern aesthetics and philosophies that have come to bear on Swallow’s approach, while also representing the artist’s distinct personality and character.

Swallow studied Chinese calligraphy for ten years in with Wang Gong Yi and has exhibited work in Korea, Vietnam, and China.

Through painstaking pointillism, Kelly Guthrie captures the tiny textures of insect life: from the fuzz of a bee to the vulnerable underside of a grasshopper. Guthrie’s drawings act as microscopic lenses, while her enlargements of the originals shine a light on the artistic process itself, and allow viewers to celebrate the medium as well as the tiny subjects that Guthrie’s work pays homage to.

Mediating between phytomorphology (botanical form), human control, and delimitative glitch, Willem’s images are manually composed through choreographed performances with a flatbed scanner. Willem stages hauntingly beautiful images of plant specimens as they are caught between physical and digital spaces, and asks us to contemplate the complex relationship between nature, technology, and ourselves.

These classes represent new programming you can get used to seeing at Jackson Bottom and City of Hillsboro parks. Steve Engel has joined the team as Nature Program Supervisor and, with the help of long-time volunteers, is leading these and other offerings. Steve is an educator and naturalist with thirty years of experience teaching and learning about the natural world. Classes are designed for adults and teens who attend with an adult, unless otherwise noted.

Winter Raptors Field Trip

Winter Waterfowl Identification

Ducks, geese, swans! Diving ducks, puddle ducks, cackling geese!

Canada geese, tundra swans, trumpeter swans! Trying to figure them all out can drive you crazy!

Come to this class to get started on identifying a mallard from a wigeon and a teal from a merganser, or from another teal for that matter! After an indoor presentation of informative slides we venture out to view wild waterfowl and practice what we learned.

The mild climate of our area attracts birds of prey that spend the winter here. It’s warm, there’s food, why go further south? On a good day you can find ten species of raptor in Washington County, if you know where and what to look for.

Transportation is provided for this outing in search of eagles, falcons, hawks and harriers. We depart from the Civic Center where you can arrive by MAX, bus or park your vehicle in the free parking garage. This trip is limited to seven participants so don’t wait to register!

After some botany basics indoors we venture out to explore the plant world around us using our senses of sight, touch and smell. Then this easy introduction into the world of songbirds is for you! Let’s say you’ve been going to Lunch with the Birds weekly, you’ve come on Morning Bird Song Walks, and you’re still unsure about the difference between thrushes, tanagers and buntings. Put down your binoculars for a spell and get some basic information to help you make sense of the field marks and behaviors you see. Take an optional bird walk after the class.

Lifeguarding Certification

These classes focus on teaching you to train your dog. Your dog learns a wide range of obedience exercises through positive reinforcement. Puppies and dogs of all ages are welcome to participate.

The lifeguarding course includes comprehensive training in water rescues, CPR/AED, and first aid skills. This American Red Cross course incorporates a blended-learning format with online coursework, classroom, and water activities.

Participants must pass a pre-requisite skills test that includes a 300-yard swim, treading water with no hands for two minutes, and retrieving a 10 lb. brick from the bottom of the pool and swimming 20-yards holding the brick. Online course work must be completed PRIOR to classroom and water sessions, no exceptions. 100% attendance required.

Choose either the Saturday or Sunday Pre-Course Skills Test for the March course.

Rafting the Sandy River

Dodge Park to Oxbow Park is a secluded section of the Sandy River that gives the feeling of being on a wilderness river trip, without being too far out of Portland. This excursion features 3.5 – 11 miles of exciting spring time runs through a number of Class I-III rapids such as Pipeline (II+) and Blue Hole (II+). With waterfalls cascading down from basalt cliffs and wildlife abounding, you’ll witness a beautiful, healthy river system while enjoying the thrill of riding its waves and “crashing” through its holes.

Sauvie Island is one of Portland’s finest examples of a how a natural area can be preserved despite being close to a major city. Start the day at the Gilbert River boat ramp to gear up and receive safety instruction. Launch your kayak and paddle out onto Little McNary Lake. Sauvie Island supports a healthy population of hawks, herons, osprey, salmon and many other wildlife that inhabit this jewel of an island known for its beauty. If conditions permit, take the tree lined passage known as Pete’s Slough out onto yet another lake known as Aaron’s Lake for another great opportunity to see all of the birds who are part of the great Pacific Migration. Dance for Parkinson’s Oregon Class

Dance is not only art but exercise, and current research has shown that exercise is beneficial to the Parkinson’s population. Dance for Parkinson’s Oregon classes integrate movement from multiple dance forms, music of all styles and theatre and vocal games which stimulate and develop the mind, memory, body, and voice. This seven week class begins in chairs and eventually moves to the dance barre and floor.

Persons at all mobility levels and with any movement disorder are welcome. The class can be done in a wheelchair, with a walker, seated or standing. A partner is not required but one care person per class participant is welcome.

More than Just an Aquatics Center...

Water Amenities

Water amenities at SHARC include two indoor pools, a spa pool and a sauna as well as an outdoor pool. SHARC is a handicapaccessible facility.

The Outdoor Pool opens June 15. The pool features 2 diving boards and 2 child size slides. The pool is a steady 84°.

The Main Indoor Pool is heated to 84° and features an L-shaped design featuring a diving board in the 12 foot deep end and a 3.5 foot shallow end. The pool features a 117 foot curving water slide and a diving board.

The 88° Warm Water Pool has a ramp with railings and railings in the 4’6” deep end to aid swimmers with accessibility and in water therapy. The pool offers a teacup feature with warm water spilling from overhead. Children 7 years and under must be accompanied in by an adult in the water at all times.

Land Amenities

Land amenities at SHARC include workout facilities, cardio and weight room equipment.

The Cardio Room is equipped with workout machines such as climbers, ellipticals, stationary bikes, rowing machines, treadmills and more. For those who prefer free weights, a selection of The Spa Pool, kept at 103° and a co-ed those is available as well. Locker Rooms and Change Rooms

Both men’s and women’s changing rooms have over 200 lockers available for your use. In addition, four ADA accessible family change rooms are available.

SHARC offers a number of classes that take place in the Group Exercise Rooms including indoor cycling, Turbo Kick, Cardio Jam, Yoga, Pilates, and many more. A full list of classes is offered at SHARC.

On-site child care is provided in the Kid Fit Room. Children are cared for in a safe, nurturing environment while their parents remain on the premises getting their workout in. For further details on the Kid Fit Room, see page 55.

Personal Training & Massage

SHARC provides on-site child care for kids ages 4 months – 8 years in the Kid Fit Room while their parent/ guardian is at SHARC. • All persons using pools and spa must wear a swimsuit.

• No cotton, shorts, cut-offs, tank tops, shirts, or undergarments allowed in pools and spa.

• Infants and toddlers who are not potty trained must wear a swim diaper covered by a waterproof, leak-proof vinyl diaper cover.

• Only Coast Guard approved life jackets are allowed as flotation devices.

• Water wings, inflatable tubes, or swimsuits with integrated flotation devices (whether sewn in or not), and similar devices are not allowed in the pools.

General Locker Room Information

• Please bring your own lock. Combo locks and key locks are available for purchase.

• Children 3 years and under are allowed in the opposite gender locker rooms.

• All locks left on lockers after the facility closes are cut off and not replaced. SHARC is not responsible for lost or stolen items.

• Cell phone cameras, cameras, and video recorders are not to be used in the locker rooms at any time.

Swim Lesson Schedule

Weekday Preschool Introductory Swim Lessons:

(3 – 5 Years) Instructor to participant ratio is 1:5. Participants learn basic water skills to prepare them for School Age Lessons. Many of the morning Catfish classes are combined level classes.

Catfish 1: Water safety and exploration are the primary goals of the class. Front and back skills are taught with support.

Catfish 2: The participant should be comfortable with their face in the water for 3 seconds. Front and back skills are taught with assistance.

Catfish 3: The participant should be able to float, glide, and kick with minimal assistance on their front and back.

School Age Equivalent: Electric Eel. Catfish 4: The participant should be able to swim with kicks and arm pulls on their front and back for 3 – 5 yards.

School Age Equivalent: Frog.

Body Comp Assessment

16 years – Adult Qualified staff measures your body composition with a top-of-the-line electrical impedance analyzer. A consultation is included to explain the results and provide information for fitness improvement. Sessions take approximately 15 – 20 minutes. Join the award winning Hillsboro Fitness Challenge– where we are building a healthier community. During the 10-week challenge, individuals work on their own or with a group to move closer to a more active and healthy lifestyle. If you need motivation, support, or direction to reach your goals, this challenge is for you.

We offer all the tools you need to be successful. Receive a prize, a personal training session, fitness assessments and much more at registration. Win great prizes and feel more fit and healthy by the end of the challenge.

First step–declare your goal, either an individual goal or join the group goal to train and compete in the May 16th All Comers Family 5k. Second step–start working hard with our help! All participants receive training logs and weekly training plans to help reach the 5k goal and beyond. The Hillsboro Parks & Recreation Activities Guide is distributed to all Hillsboro elementary school students and is available at the Hillsboro Parks & Recreation Administration office, the Tyson Recreation Center, SHARC (Shute Park Aquatic & Recreation Center), the Walters Cultural Arts Center, Jackson Bottom Wetlands Preserve, the Civic Center, Hillsboro libraries and Chamber of Commerce.

Whether you are a new or returning customer, please contact us to request your login information. You may contact us by phone at (503) 681-6120 or come into any of our facilities during business hours to obtain your account ID and PIN. If you have ever registered for a program with the Hillsboro Parks & Recreation Department, you already have an account with us, but you need this information to register. If you have never registered for one of our programs, then your account must be set up by our staff. With our online registration program, you may view your account, browse our wide array of programs and classes, and register 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Phone-in Registration

Phone-in registration for winter/spring programs begins on December 2 and can be taken weekdays from 8:30 am – 4:30 pm. Register by calling 503-681-5397. If all lines are busy, please defer your call to a later time if possible. Payment may be made with Visa, MasterCard or Discover. Have all registration information ready when you call. Register for your immediate family ONLY. One family per phone call.

Fees/Cancellation/Refund Policy

All fees are collected during registration. Cash, check and Visa, MasterCard or Discover are accepted. Resident is defined as any individual living within the city limits of Hillsboro. All classes have a minimum enrollment and may be cancelled as early as 10 days before the class starts if the minimum enrollment is not met. Full refunds or credits are given when a class cancels or is postponed. When a recreation class refund is requested by the participant, the refund is prorated from the date of the request; a service charge of $5.00 applies. No refunds or credits are given after a swim lesson has begun. Please allow up to 4 weeks to receive a refund.

Wait Lists

If a class is filled before we receive your registration, we inform you and suggest your name be added to a wait list. If openings become available, we fill the class from names on the wait list. 48 hours after notification, if we have not received your registration your place in the class is forfeit and the next person on the wait list is notified.

WINTER READING PROGRAM @ THE HILLSBORO PUBLIC LIBRARY

Families with children nine years old or younger can sign up for the Winter Reading Program at the children’s desk starting December 26. It’s easy; just share books as a family on at least 15 days, and keep a reading record. Finishers will enjoy a special event on January 31 at Main and February 7 at the Shute Park Branch Library.

Shadywood Park

Shadywood Park, a 9.2 acre park, was named for the many oak trees in the park which provide welcome shade on hot days. The park offers unique recreation opportunities for its Eastwood Elementary neighborhood, including its volleyball courts and horseshoe pits.

In 1974 the park was an undeveloped residential lot. Developers and Investors, Inc. proposed selling the lot to the City for the formation of a park. When property was appraised, it appraised for roughly $5,000 over the negotiated purchase price. Federal grants, which were being used to fund park development, require properties be purchased for fair market value (appraised price). The City offered to pay the full appraised price, which Developers and Investors graciously declined, saying the originally agreed-upon price was fair and the use as a park was important to them. The park opened in 1975 and today includes play equipment, picnic tables, pathways, volleyball courts, restrooms and off-street parking.

Volunteers planted 1,000 daffodil bulbs in the park many years ago. When winter seems long, pop over to Shadywood Park to see the flowers popping up in unexpected places to get a welcome vision of spring.
