PRECISION CLEANING IN HIGH-SPECIFICATION MANUFACTURING V2
In advanced manufacturing sectors such as precision optics, ophthalmics, medical devices and photonics, cleaning is no longer viewed as a secondary production process. It is a critical and measurable stage of manufacture that directly influences product performance, yield, compliance and reliability. As component tolerances become tighter and contamination limits increasingly stringent, manufacturers are under growing pressure to adopt cleaning technologies capable of delivering validated, repeatable and fully controlled results.
At Unitech Shyre, we continue to see a significant shift in customer expectations. Manufacturers are no longer seeking simply an ultrasonic cleaning machine; they require a process-engineered solution that integrates precision
cleaning, process validation and production traceability within a single controlled environment.
At Unitech Shyre, we strongly believe in synergy — a synergy between machine,
process and chemistry. Each element must work in complete harmony with the next in order to achieve optimum cleaning performance and repeatable results. Even the most advanced cleaning system will underperform if the chemistry is not correctly matched to the contamination profile, or if the process parameters are not precisely controlled. True precision cleaning can only be achieved when all three disciplines are engineered together as a unified solution.
This evolution is particularly evident within sectors such as ophthalmics and photonics, where microscopic contamination can directly affect optical transmission, coating adhesion and overall component performance. Likewise, within medical manufacturing, the regulatory emphasis on process consistency and documented validation has elevated cleaning from a maintenance function to a quality-critical manufacturing discipline.
Modern ultrasonic cleaning technology offers substantial advantages when designed correctly for precision applications. High-frequency ultrasonic systems enable the removal of particulate and microscopic contaminants from highly sensitive geometries without mechanical abrasion or surface damage. However, achieving consistently repeatable outcomes depends on far more than ultrasonic energy alone.
System design must incorporate tightly controlled parameters including ultrasonic frequency stability, filtration efficiency, temperature regulation, fluid management, dwell time and automated handling.
MACHINERY
WHAT DO WE DO?
We design and deliver fully bespoke industrial cleanroom installations, engineered to meet your exact operational requirements. Our expertise includes cleanrooms, spray booths, ovens, and servicing solutions tailored to the automotive industry.
Industrial Spray Equipment
Built with 65 years of design and engineering excellence.
Designed for precision, engineered for performance, Elcometer spray equipment is built to work harder, last longer and perform better.
Repeatability can only be achieved when each stage of the process is engineered to operate within defined and monitored tolerances.
Increasingly, manufacturers are also demanding evidence-based validation to support internal quality systems and external regulatory requirements. This includes documented cleaning protocols, process monitoring, batch traceability and performance verification. In many applications, cleaning systems are now expected to integrate directly into wider Industry 4.0 manufacturing environments, providing data capture and reporting capabilities that support audit compliance and continuous process improvement.
Automation also plays an increasingly important role. Manual intervention introduces variability, particularly in high-throughput or contaminationsensitive production environments. Automated ultrasonic cleaning platforms help eliminate operator dependency,
ensuring process consistency across multiple production cycles while improving throughput and reducing reject rates.
At Unitech Shyre, our approach has always focused on engineering systems around the application rather than supplying standardised equipment. Different substrates, contamination profiles and production environments demand different cleaning strategies. A photonics application may require ultra-fine particulate removal under tightly filtered conditions, while medical components may require validated multi-stage aqueous cleaning and controlled drying to meet compliance objectives.
As manufacturing technologies continue to advance, cleaning standards will only become more demanding. Precision cleaning is increasingly recognised as an enabling technology that supports product quality, operational efficiency and regulatory confidence. Manufacturers that
invest in validated, repeatable cleaning processes are not simply improving cleanliness; they are strengthening the reliability and competitiveness of their entire production operation.
For companies operating in highspecification industries, precision cleaning is no longer optional. It is an integral part of modern manufacturing quality assurance — and one that must be approached with the same technical discipline as every other critical production process.

QUALICOAT UK & IRELAND TEAMS UP WITH AMS FOR ADVANCED TECHNICIAN TRAINING
Last month, technicians gathered at Architectural & Metal Systems (AMS) in Wallingstown, Co. Cork, for a hands-on QUALICOAT Advanced Technician training session to refresh their knowledge on aluminium coating and defect identification. As the QUALICOAT Specifications require all coaters to have at least one technician trained every two years, this session provided a vital local opportunity for Irish members to maintain the prestigious quality label.
Reflecting on the training event, Adam McCarthy, Laboratory and Installation Manager for AMS, said: “It was a privilege to host the Advanced Technician training on behalf of QUALICOAT UK & Ireland and a pleasure to have Oliver [Bögler, Head of Inspections at IFO Institute of Surface Technology] and Jim [Regan, Managing Director for EMEA at Q-Lab Europe Ltd] advancing our knowledge and sharing their respective expertise. These sessions are always worthwhile – it’s a welcome opportunity to refresh and re-engage with all aspects of aluminium, not just powder coating.”
The QUALICOAT Advanced Technician training helps member representatives (technicians) identify defects and provides a deeper understanding of everyday products – what to consider and how to handle those products before and after they leave the facility, and how effective cleaning can extend a product’s lifespan and revive a product dulled by exposure. It’s a practical session with real world examples.
Each successful candidate receives a Certificate of Attendance.

Strategic direction and insights
A major focus of the meeting was the global progression toward QUALICOAT 3.0, an initiative aimed at eliminating field failures by expanding licensing and auditing standards directly to aluminium extruders. Pilot auditing is already underway across three designated plants worldwide to ensure that raw materials meet stricter criteria before reaching the coating stage. In addition, the Technical Committee highlighted ongoing global work regarding the regulation of PFAS ‘forever chemicals’ and gathering data to optimise pre-anodising standards for aluminium sheets and panels.
On the legislative front, the organisation is actively collating member feedback to drive a comprehensive revision of BS EN 12206. Operationally, QUALICOAT UK & Ireland celebrated strong growth with two new licences finalised and four more in progress. Members also received an exclusive overview of QCT 360, a single, bespoke digital certification platform built to replace a fragmented tracking system for coaters, powder suppliers and pre-treatment suppliers.
Technical excellence
To make the most of the expertise of visitors like independent inspector, Oliver Bögler and Jim Regan from Q-Lab Europe, Ltd., QUALICOAT UK & Ireland held an additional technician training event on 19th May hosted by Architectural & Metal Systems (AMS) in Wallingstown, Co. Cork. This provided a vital local opportunity for Irish members to maintain the prestigious quality label.
Gratitude and appreciation for Irish hosts
During the meeting QUALICOAT UK & Ireland extended its gratitude to the Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr Fergal Dennehy and the City Hall team for their support and hospitality, and to Pat O’Hara Managing Director of AMS – a long-established QUALICOAT-certified applicator, for suggesting that the meeting be held in Cork and at City Hall.
Reflecting on the success of the event, Chris concludes: “The whole experience has felt like a coming of age for QUALICOAT UK & Ireland – it’s a visit that we will all remember, and we look forward to whenever we might return to Cork.”

SURFACEPREP ANNOUNCE NEW PARTNERSHIP
SurfacePrep UK has announced a new partnership with OMSG, the Italian manufacturer of automated shot blasting, shot peening and surface treatment machinery, to make OMSG automated blasting equipment more accessible to customers across the UK.
Under the new partnership, SurfacePrep UK will add a wider range of automated systems to its existing surface preparation, abrasives, finishing, servicing and technical support offer.
The agreement gives UK manufacturers a clearer route to explore automated blasting solutions through a local partner with established surface preparation expertise. For OMSG, the partnership provides a stronger route into the UK market through a business already supporting customers across abrasive blasting, media selection, equipment servicing, testing, compliance and process support.
The announcement comes as more manufacturers look for ways to improve production consistency, reduce manual handling, control finishing quality and make better use of skilled labour.
Automated blasting can help businesses move from labour-intensive manual blasting towards more repeatable, controlled and productive surface treatment processes.
Rather than relying only on manual operation, automated systems can be configured so components move through a controlled blasting process using the right machine type, handling method, abrasive, blast parameters and recovery system. This can help manufacturers improve consistency from batch to batch, reduce avoidable rework and support higher throughput where the application is suitable.
For SurfacePrep UK, the partnership strengthens its ability to support customers who need more than standalone blasting equipment. As a company, SurfacePrep UK works across surface preparation equipment, abrasives, blast rooms, cabinets, PPE,
servicing, training, testing, compliance support and after-market services. Adding OMSG automated systems extends that offer into more advanced production environments where automation, repeatability and integration with existing processes are critical.
OMSG brings significant specialist manufacturing experience to the partnership. Established in 1961, the company, designs and manufactures shot blasting, shot peening and machine systems for sectors including foundries, steel construction, forging, aluminium die casting, galvanising, oil and gas, gas cylinders and many other industrial applications. OMSG has installed more than 5,500 shot blast machines in 86 countries, supported by an international commercial and after-sales network.
Paul A Griffiths, Managing Director at SurfacePrep UK, reported:
“Many UK manufacturers are under pressure to improve output, reduce rework and make their finishing processes more consistent. Customers need technical guidance, application understanding, correct media selection and long-term support. Within our portfolio, we offer stand-alone solutions through to full automated process lines, complete turnkey solutions. Our partnership with OMSG gives us a stronger automated blasting offer, backed by proven machine technology and SurfacePrep UK’s local service and support.”
The partnership is expected to support manufacturers across a range
of applications, including cleaning, descaling, surface preparation before coating, foundry work, structural steel, component finishing and other production environments where blasting consistency and throughput are important.
Edoardo Pisoni, Sales at OMSG, said:
“OMSG are very pleased to begin our agreement with SurfacePrep UK, their company, and their team. I look forward to cooperating with all to create a long-term, mutually satisfying partnership. I look forward to sharing a great start with this new agreement!”
SurfacePrep UK will work with customers to understand their component type, production volume, required finish, handling constraints, available space, abrasive requirements and wider operational objectives before recommending a suitable automated blasting solution.
The company says the focus will be on helping customers make informed decisions, not simply introducing new equipment. Automated blasting can deliver major benefits, but only when the right system is matched to the right application and supported properly throughout its lifecycle.
The partnership is now live, with SurfacePrep UK available to discuss automated blasting requirements with customers across the UK and Ireland.

When Stephen Howett joined Borough in 1986, Britain’s bestselling car was the Ford Escort, achieving more than 150,000 sales in the year. Quality management has changed since then to require a dedicated liaison professional, someone with the knowledge, temperament and credibility to sit across from a client and discuss tolerances, accreditation and continuous improvement.
Forty years on, Stephen retires from Borough, having spent much of that time as precisely that dedicated professional.
Borough’s story over the past four decades mirrors much of what has happened to British precision manufacturing more broadly.
The business was transitioning from traditional metal plating into the technically demanding world of plating
on plastics; a shift that opened the door to even more work with the automotive sector but brought with it an entirely different set of expectations from customers.
Quality became a commercial differentiator and automotive-specific standards moved from nice-to-have to non-negotiable. Customers with global supply chains and zero-defect programmes needed more than a good product; they needed a reliable point of contact who understood their requirements and could be trusted to accurately represent a supplier’s capabilities.
Stephen became that point of contact.
Over the course of his career, Stephen supported sales teams, attended trade exhibitions and visited customers on-site across the country.
He did so without fuss and without fanfare. His approach was patient and methodical: understand what the customer needed, establish whether Borough could deliver it and ensure the relationship was maintained to the standard both parties expected.
That combination of technical knowledge, commercial awareness and interpersonal reliability is not easily replaced. It accumulates over time and it shows in the relationships he built. Many of the customers Stephen dealt with in his early years remained Borough customers throughout his tenure.
Joint Managing Directors at Borough, David Brereton and Nick Coombes, have worked with Stephen for much of those four decades, David said: “Stephen has been part of the fabric of this business for as long as most of us can remember. The industry he joined and the industry he leaves are almost unrecognisable from one another and yet his approach never wavered.
“He brought consistency, professionalism and a genuine commitment to the customer to everything he did.
We will find it hard to replace his ‘can-do’ attitude that always ensured the needs of our customers were at the heart of the decisions we have made during our growth. That matters, and it will not be easily replicated.”
Stephen retired on 29th May 2026 at the age of 78. Outside of work he is a committed Tottenham Hotspur supporter, a fact that has required considerable patience over the years and will, no doubt, continue to do so. Borough wishes him a long and healthy retirement.

NEW: COLOR2CHECK
Portable Color Quality Control for Basic Entry-Level Use Standards
BYK-Gardner – worldwide partner of the automotive, paint and plastic industries for quality control of color, appearance and physical properties – is introducing the new color2check, a portable spectrophotometer that offers a simple and affordable start to color quality control. The instrument complements the newly introduced color2go and expands BYK-Gardner’s portfolio of portable spectrophotometers to meet customer needs, ranging from basic entry-level use to professional applications.
The color2check features a lightweight and rugged design with horizontal alignment, making color measurements simple, stable, and secure. Its 2.8-inch color touchscreen with icon-based menus, clear data tables and graphical displays ensures intuitive operation.
“Touch and swipe” can be used as on a smartphone — even when wearing gloves — enabling efficient use in laboratory, production, or field environments. To ensure long-term protection, the instrument is delivered with a dedicated garage. When not in use, the color2check can be safely stored to protect it from dust. The garage also provides space for the test standard box so that it’s always close at hand.
The color2check focuses on reliable color measurement and represents a practical solution for customers who do not require gloss measurement and are satisfied with wider specifications. Digital standards cannot be exchanged, meaning physical working standards must be measured as a reference with every color2check. This makes the instrument well suited for internal quality control tasks with less stringent specification demands. The instrument benefits from proven BYK LED illumination, providing excellent shortterm, long-term, and temperature stability. No calibration is required for up to three
months, and the LED light source comes with a 10-year warranty, eliminating the need for lamp replacement during the instrument’s life.
With its combination of essential measurement capability, intuitive operation, and attractive price, the color2check provides a robust and accessible starting point for establishing color quality control. It is a practical option for users seeking a reliable entry-level solution while maintaining the expected BYKGardner quality.
For professional users with more advanced requirements, the color2 family also includes the color2go, featuring additional gloss measurement, a digital standard, and two software licenses.

New oven model: EcoSmartCure
ENERGY-FLEXIBLE
DRYING: DÜRR INTRODUCES QFLEX TECHNOLOGY
Up to now, ovens used in automotive drying have always been designed for a specific heating method. Fluctuating energy prices, insecure supply, and ambitious CO2 targets are increasing calls for more flexible systems. With its Qflex technology, Dürr introduces a new concept that enables a complete decoupling of all ovens from the heat source. This allows car manufacturers to use different energy sources or switch from one source to another in the future without structural changes to the oven.
Dürr is equipping its entire range of ovens with centralized heating technology and will focus on two energy-flexible systems in the future: the EcoInCure and the
EcoSmartCure with Qflex technology. The variable heating circuit in the ovens can be operated with all relevant heat sources, whether natural gas, electricity,
or even hydrogen in the future. This energy flexibility means that the system operator is no longer tied to one specific type of energy based on the chosen oven type.
“It is impossible for anyone to predict today what source of energy will be available in plentiful supply and at a reasonable cost tomorrow,” says Dr. Heiko Dieter, product manager at Dürr, in explaining the benefits of the new concept. “If, for example, the gas supply is interrupted at short notice, there is a risk of costs increasing and even production being interrupted.
The EcoSmartCure combines a centralized heating concept with a stop-and-go principle.
Energy-flexible ovens guarantee an alternative supply in this case. If a source of energy is no longer economical, operators can switch to another source with minimal effort – without having to interfere with the oven’s structural fabric. Choosing a hybrid system also makes it possible to automatically switch to the cheapest energy source depending on the time of day.”
Qflex technology as the technological foundation
At the heart of the concept is a central heating module that generates heat for drying car bodies and supplies it as needed to the individual zones using a heating circuit. The standalone heating module can be powered using gas or electricity. If an operator wishes to switch the energy source later, for example because it is installing its own solar power system, there is no change to the oven and only the heating module is modified. The Qflex technology also makes it easy to integrate innovative technologies such
as electric high-temperature storage units to store energy for later use.
Two ovens designed for distinct application profiles
The EcoInCure transverse oven, which has proven itself in over 30 paint shops worldwide, meets the highest requirements for heating response, process reliability, and paint quality. The EcoSmartCure is an innovation based on the traditional longitudinal mode of operation. What makes it innovative is how it combines the central heating concept with a stop-and-go principle, in which the body goes through defined stationary phases. Compared with conventional ovens, this mode of operation enables much more precise temperature control. The body is strategically heated where necessary, rather than applying air to large areas. This reduces thermal stress, especially for thicker parts like the sills of electric vehicles, and improves paint quality.
Dürr is equipping its entire range of ovens with centralized heating technology.
Compact design for new builds and modernization of existing plants
Both ovens are compact single-level systems that do not require any additional power unit levels. Their low space requirement makes them easy to integrate into existing buildings. EcoInCure and EcoSmartCure are therefore an economically attractive solution for brownfield modernizations – for both CAPEX and OPEX projects.
The EcoSmartCure is currently being tested for industrial use. “The strong customer interest and two projects already underway confirm to us that we have hit the mark with this new development,” says Dr. Dieter with conviction. “Energy flexibility is no longer a distant vision. The Qflex technology in our ovens now offers a solution for responding flexibly to volatile energy markets and changing conditions in automotive production.”
The law requires UK employers to provide adequate ventilation in enclosed areas of the workplace to remove stale or contaminated indoor air and bring in fresh air. This is mandatory as a result of UK ventilation regulations that must be strictly adhered to, with failure to do so risking employee sickness and financial penalties for the business.
While the law applies to all sectors, it’s particularly important when employees are working in a potentially hazardous environment. A risk assessment will identify issues and determine the necessary measures to minimise the risks of air pollutants to help achieve high quality indoor air.
Legal requirements for workplace ventilation
The employer must ensure every enclosed workspace has adequate ventilation to allow a “sufficient quantity of fresh or purified air” to enter under Regulation 6 of the Workplace Health, Safety and Welfare Regulations 1992.
Ventilation refers to the process of bringing in fresh air from outside, or purifying indoor air which may contain pollutants and impurities, or may be stale, hot and humid due to work processes and machinery. This can include ventilation in warehouse environments, for example, where a healthy and safe environment is essential to protect both employees and stored goods and equipment.
A more specific law, the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002, known as COSHH, covers the safe removal of harmful substances from the air by using a dust or fume extraction system. This protects
employees in high risk environments who may be exposed to pollutants such as welding fumes, or dust generated by various industrial processes.
COSHH legislation has been in place for more than 25 years, with the most recent version, in 2002, enhanced with amendments from the Control of Substances Hazardous to Work Regulations 1999.
UK ventilation laws were updated in 2021, when Part F of the Building Regulations was amended for buildings other than dwellings, with the changes coming into effect on 15th June 2022. The update included requirements for both mechanical and natural ventilation, with the emphasis on providing adequate air extraction and supply in different building types. This legislation works in conjunction with the Workplace Health, Safety and Welfare Regulations 1992.
Health risks associated with poor ventilation
The primary health issues include respiratory diseases, headaches, fatigue and long-term illnesses. It may also worsen conditions like asthma and allergies, or cause eye irritation. Around 12,000 deaths annually are linked to earlier exposure to dust and fumes in the workplace, with the majority being due to respiratory issues.
According to the Health and Safety Executive, an estimated 13,000 cases of breathing and lung problems every year are caused or worsened by working conditions. In addition, poor ventilation can contribute to the growth of mould, further impacting air quality and potentially causing respiratory issues and allergic reactions. Airborne irritants can lead to coughing and sneezing, headaches, dizziness, nausea and irritation of the eyes, nose and throat.
Main causes of poor ventilation
Common causes include an outdated infrastructure, lack of proper filtration
systems, inefficient HVAC systems and failure to address specific air quality needs in certain environments.
We can help businesses comply with the regulations and keep employees safe. When you purchase an AirBench dust extraction system, you’re choosing the UK’s leading range of downdraught benches that capture dust using internal filters, returning clean air to the room.
Similarly, our fume extraction systems provide a safe and healthy working environment. An essential part of your COSHH compliance, they can protect your people and products from gases, fumes, solvents and smoke. A build-up of fumes and debris can be highly dangerous over time, so removing pollutants effectively is crucial to employee safety. Using a powered fan to create a negative draught, our fume extractors remove airborne contaminants created by day-to-day processes.
Our systems include downdraught benches to capture fumes from solvents
or solder using filters to suit each specific application. In addition, our VertEx cross-draught systems extract and filter fumes through a wall, or we can provide a full booth with an optional VB system, enabling the operator to work in a fully extracted space without risk of contamination.
Penalties for sub-standard workplace ventilation
The consequences for businesses that fail to meet legal requirements are severe, as non-compliance can result in unlimited fines, damage to employee health, reduced productivity and even reputational harm.
Don’t leave anything to chance: contact us for information on our products and services, and make sure your business is compliant with workplace regulations.

YOUR CO-SOLVENT CLEANING
PROCESS IS
COSTING
MORE THAN YOU THINK
Understanding the cost, compliance and operational drivers behind co-solvent replacement.
For many electronics manufacturers, co-solvent cleaning has been a trusted method for removing flux residues, oils and particulate contamination from complex assemblies.
It remains a proven process. However, rising solvent costs, increasing environmental pressures and changing regulations are prompting manufacturers to ask an important question:
Is it still the most costeffective way to achieve the required cleaning standard?
No - many modern cleaning technologies
can now deliver comparable cleanliness levels while reducing operating costs and improving process efficiency.
Why Manufacturers Are Re-Evaluating Co-Solvent Cleaning
The biggest challenge is often no longer cleaning performance. It is cost.
Older open-top vapour degreasing systems can lose significant volumes of solvent through fugitive emissions. Combined with the high cost of fluorinated solvents, this can create a substantial ongoing expense.
Manufacturers must also consider evolving environmental requirements, workplace considerations and increasing demands for process efficiency.
At the same time, electronic assemblies are becoming more complex and cleanliness specifications more demanding.
The challenge is not simply finding a replacement chemistry. It is selecting

the right technology and process for the application.
Key Drivers for Change
Rising operating costs associated with fluorinated solvents.
Increasing environmental and emissions requirements.
More demanding cleanliness standards.
Pressure to improve efficiency and reduce waste.
The need to future-proof production against regulatory and supply chain changes.
Evaluating the Technology Options
There is no universal replacement for co-solvent cleaning. The best solution depends on the application, cleanliness requirements and production goals.
Three proven alternatives dominate the market:
Modified Alcohol (Hermetically Sealed): Vacuum-sealed solvent performance. Best for complex geometries and blind
holes. This means emissions are virtually eliminated, which results in significantly lower operating costs.
Aqueous Spray-in-Air: Combination of detergents, temperature, and high-pressure mechanical action. This means a flexible, easily integrated line, which results in reduced consumable costs versus fluorinated solvents.
Multi-Stage Aqueous: Dedicated, isolated cleaning, rinsing, and drying stages. This offers process control and repeatable, ultra-low contamination levels for high-reliability applications.
Greater control over emissions and workplace exposure considerations.
Reliable, repeatable cleaning performance.
The Importance of Process Selection
The most successful replacement projects begin with a detailed assessment of the application, supported by laboratory trials and technical evaluation.
The goal is not simply to replace an existing process. It is to identify the technology that delivers the required cleanliness standard at the lowest long-term operating cost.
Ready to Protect Your Production?
Legacy co-solvent systems are a financial and a regulatory liability. Upgrading your process isn’t about buying new equipment or chemistry, it is about engineered risk mitigation.

ZERO-TOUCH MANUFACTURING AND THE STRATEGIC ROLE OF AMBER INDUSTRIES’
OVERHEAD CONVEYORS IN SURFACE FINISHING PLANTS
Transforming Paint and Powder Coating Operations Through Intelligent Material Handling with Amber Industries.
The philosophy is built upon several key principles:
Autonomous material movement
The UK manufacturing sector is undergoing a profound transformation driven by automation, digitalization, and the pursuit of higher productivity. At the centre of this evolution is the concept of Zero-Touch Manufacturing (ZTM)—a philosophy that seeks to minimize or eliminate routine human intervention throughout the production process.
While robots, artificial intelligence, and advanced process controls often dominate discussions surrounding smart factories, one critical technology frequently receives less attention despite its central role: the overhead conveyor system.
In surface finishing plants, overhead conveyors from Amber serve as the physical backbone of Zero-Touch Manufacturing, linking pretreatment, coating, curing, inspection, and packaging operations into a seamless and highly automated production flow.
The picture opposite illustrates a recent application of ZTM overhead conveyors from Amber Industries which link together robots and AGV’s to dramatically reduce non-value added manual operations at a surface finishing site.
Understanding Zero-Touch Manufacturing
Zero-Touch Manufacturing refers to a production environment in which products move through manufacturing processes with little or no direct operator intervention. Production decisions are increasingly made by interconnected systems that monitor performance, analyse data, and automatically optimize operations in real time.
Automated process control
Predictive maintenance
The objective is to eliminate repetitive, non-value-added activities and so freeing businesses to focus on engineering, process improvement, and operational oversight.
Nowhere is this approach more relevant than in modern paint and powder coating facilities.
The Challenge of Surface Finishing Automation
Surface finishing operations are inherently complex. Products must pass through multiple process stages, each requiring precise control of time, temperature, chemistry, and application parameters.
A typical finishing line includes:
Loading stations
Cleaning and pretreatment
Dry-off ovens
Paint or powder application booths
Flash-off zones
Cure ovens
Cooling sections
Inspection areas
Packaging and dispatch
Historically, many of these operations required significant manual intervention. Operators were responsible for moving products, adjusting production flow, monitoring process conditions, and managing work-in-progress inventory.
An Amber overhead conveyor working alongside robotics, AGV’s and advanced control systems enables the Zero-Touch Manufacturing philosophy to be implemented today which help keeps businesses globally competitive.
Intelligent Conveyors and Smart Factory Integration
The latest generation of overhead conveyors from Amber Industries’ has evolved far beyond simple transport equipment.
Through integration with Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) technologies and Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES), conveyor systems now function as intelligent production assets.
Features commonly include:
RFID and Product Identification
Each carrier can be equipped with RFID tags or digital identifiers.
This allows the system to:
Track individual parts
Identify product types
Route components automatically
Store production history
Enable full traceability
As products enter the finishing line, the conveyor controller automatically directs them through the appropriate processing sequence, at the right time and in the right order -especially in today’s environment of reducing batches sizes when flexibility can be key to winning and fulfilling a contract.
Real-Time Process Synchronization
Modern conveyors communicate directly with:
Pretreatment systems
Powder booths
Paint robots
Ovens
Inspection stations
Production flow can be adjusted dynamically to accommodate changing workloads and process requirements.
Automated Accumulation
Power-and-free conveyor systems can temporarily accumulate products when downstream processes become constrained.
This capability:
Prevents bottlenecks
Maintains production continuity
Maximizes equipment utilization
Reduces manual intervention
Such functionality is fundamental to Zero-Touch Manufacturing environments.
Supporting Automated Coating Operations
The success of robotic paint and powder application systems depends heavily on overhead conveyor performance.
Consistent conveyor speed and positioning ensure:
Uniform coating thickness
Accurate robotic path control
Improved transfer efficiency
Reduced overspray
Higher first-pass yield
Looking Ahead
As artificial intelligence, robotics, and industrial connectivity continue to mature, overhead conveyors will play an increasingly important role in the development of autonomous finishing facilities.
Future systems are expected to incorporate:
AI-driven production scheduling
Digital twin simulation
Self-diagnosing components
Autonomous routing decisions
Machine learning-based process optimization
The convergence of these technologies will further strengthen the role of conveyors as intelligent infrastructure supporting highly automated finishing operations.
Conclusion
Zero-Touch Manufacturing represents the next stage in the evolution of industrial production, and surface finishing plants are among the sectors best positioned to benefit from its implementation right now!

New post-processing solution celebrates world premiere at 3D Print in Lyon
AM SOLUTIONS PRESENTS INDUSTRIAL ENTRY-LEVEL SOLUTION FOR CLEANING AND SURFACE FINISHING OF POLYMER PARTS
AM Solutions – 3D post processing technology expands its portfolio with the S1 Basic, a new compact solution for the automated cleaning and surface finishing of 3D printed polymer parts in the industrial entry-level segment. The system addresses the growing diversity in the additive manufacturing market. While highly automated production solutions remain important, there is also a growing focus on compact systems for smaller parts and batch sizes. The S1 Basic will be presented for the first time at the 3D Print show in Lyon from June 2 to 4, 2026, and will be available for purchase starting that date.
Even in the entry-level segment of industrial 3D printing, demand is rising for automated post-processing solutions, as printer manufacturers increasingly introduce compact systems for smaller parts and batch sizes, facilitating entry into additive manufacturing. Meanwhile, manual post-processing steps are becoming less cost-efficient, reproducible, and conducive to high-quality parts.
The S1 Basic addresses the growing demand for entry-level additive manufacturing
AM Solutions has expanded its portfolio with the new S1 Basic, a solution that precisely addresses this demand. The system is specifically designed for the automated cleaning and surface finishing of smaller batch sizes in the polymer sector.
“We see printer manufacturers clearly intending to provide solutions for entry into additive manufacturing at an industrial level, alongside large, high-performance systems for series production. Smaller, more accessible products are lowering barriers to market entry, but expectations for part quality remain consistently high,” explains David Soldan, Head of AM Solutions – 3D post processing technology. “Regardless of this development, we recognized the need for a compact, industrial post-processing solution early on and began developing a corresponding system. With the S1 Basic, we will offer a commercially available product starting in June that fills this market gap, particularly for cost-effective and reproducible post processing of small batches,” Soldan continues.
The system’s development is based on AM Solutions’ extensive experience in industrial post-processing, particularly shot blasting technology. After multiple development and testing cycles, the S1 Basic was designed to be robust, stable, and user-friendly.
The new system will premiere at the 3D Print show in Lyon, where it will be showcased live at the AM Solutions / Rösler France booth. Rösler France is part of the Rösler Group,

Advantages of a Power & Free Conveyor
Compact and save design with movable parts inside the tack
Modular system with standard parts
Flexible design for optimal lay-out planning
Advanced automatic control system with touch screen user interface and remote access.
Components
Different standard components are available to design the most optimal conveyor lay-out. The track sections are available as Power & Free, Free or only Power in standard or cut-to-length sections.
Bends can be horizontal or vertical. The radius of the bends is often standard. Non standard bends can be made on request. The power chain comes in standard chain link pitches and can be fitted with open or closed bearings.
Depending on product dimensions and the conveyor lay-out the product carrier can have different trolley configurations. Using multiple trolleys the load capacity of carrier can be increased.
A Power & Free system needs a drive system. Depending on system parameters the drive mechanism can be a caterpillar drive or a screw drive unit. For safety all drive units are utilised with a torque limiter that disconnects the drive force between the drive unit and gear motor.
Stop stations are available as standard design, ATEX or high temperature for curing ovens. Stop stations are controlled and monitored by the PLC/PC control system.
Switches are installed at the position where carriers must divert to other directions. Pneumatic cylinders with position sensors are used to actuate the switches. Depending on the position in the lay-out switches can also be self-switching. Switches are also controlled and monitored by the main control system.
To avoid as much as possible wear of the chain and trolleys a lubrication unit can be used. This automatic controlled device lubricates parts such as the chain links and bearings on a pre-set interval.
Special parts are available such as lift- and drop sections, transfer chains, pneumatic pushers and product rotation units.
There are also solutions to have a dipping tank crane system take over the products from the carriers and after the dipping process hang them back onto the carriers.

A key component in any thru-process temperature profiling system is the thermocouple. Obviously at the end of the day the quality of any temperature data recorded is greatly influenced by how accurately and repeatably the thermocouple sensor
“Hot Junction” can be secured to the product surface. The increasing diverse mix of materials being used in manufacturing (steel, aluminium, alloys, plastics and composites) creates a significant temperature measurement challenge. The thermocouple needs to provide easy, reliable, and efficient attachment to the material type being measured. One thermocouple design alone will now not suffice. To address the problem PhoenixTM offers a comprehensive range of thermocouple designs developed for the challenge in hand.
For routine temperature monitoring of steel, as part of paint/powder coating cure QA the default thermocouple type has been the magnetic thermocouple. The thermocouple design allows quick, easy but accurate and repeatable placement of the measurement sensor on the steel surface. To address the ever-increasing space limitations in many applications the standard magnetic thermocouple design has been
complemented by the MiniMag thermocouple. The sensor head is only 30 mm diameter and 15 mm high so the MiniMag will fit in places previously impossible using traditional magnetic thermocouple designs. The design allows for use even in areas where the surface may not be flat.
Energy Product 32 MGOe) to any steel surface and is almost totally unaffected by temperature even at 200 °C. The Samarium Cobalt (Sm2Co17) magnet has a magnet temperature coefficient of only -0.03% per degree °C. This means only 7% loss in magnetic strength even when operating at 250 °C. The magnet is encapsulated within the thermocouple housing so there is no direct contact between magnet and coating.

This creates a significant benefit for coating processes such as Ecoat where adhesion between the thermocouple and cured coating layer may be problematic. The MiniMag thermocouple can be removed efficiently post cure without any risk of damage to the magnet and significantly less risk of damage to the product coating.
In routine monitoring thermocouple cable damage over time is to be expected with the physical and thermal demands of many processes. Conventionally this would necessitate the costly replacement
of the complete damaged thermocouple. To minimise the cost of such action PhoenixTM have designed the magnetic and clamp thermocouples with a unique replaceable cable option. This design feature offers a cost-effective on-site repair solution, reducing long-term running costs. Customisation of the cable lengths to suit changes in different applications is a further benefit of the interchangeable cable design.
For nonferrous metals such as aluminium the go to thermocouple of choice is the clamp thermocouple alternatively for permanently rigged test pieces the washer thermocouple may also be a viable option.
For composites, plastics the recommended thermocouple is the responsive, low thermal mass, exposed junction
thermocouple attached using high temperature tape. The versatile thermocouple can also be used also for air/environment monitoring possibly during essential oven survey operations (TUS). The exposed junction thermocouple is the perfect choice if monitoring paint cure in an IR oven (electric emitter or catalytic gas / radiant heater). The low thermal mass thermocouple can be overcoated to measure accurately the rapid surface heating at the interface between substrate surface and the coating, making it ideal for the challenges of the IR Cure application.
If confidence in measurement accuracy and precision is important in your product temperature profiling strategies, remember the thermocouple you choose is critical.

BLASTING: SCALING UP WITH AUTOMATED BLASTING –SUPPORTING MUIJS
CONTAINERREPARATIE’S GROWTH THROUGH INNOVATION
When Muijs Containerreparatie sought a solution to enhance their blasting efficiency and improve working conditions, they turned to Blastman Robotics. Specializing in container repairs and surface treatment, Muijs needed a system that could handle old containers with heavy paint layers, ensuring speed, consistency, and safety. Blastman provided an automated blasting solution that transformed their operations.
Streamlining production with Blastman’s automated blasting system
Before implementing the robotic blasting system, Muijs relied on manual blasting,
which limited their daily output to just two containers. Since integrating Blastman’s technology, production has surged dramatically. “Now, we are blasting around 15 to 20 containers per day, and if we want, we could handle even more,” says Leko
The transition to automation came with a learning curve; however, the ability to fine-tune processes allowed Muijs to achieve optimal performance fairly quickly.
“The first three months after the robot was installed, including a lot of trying and learning how to make programs. This is, of course, a challenge everyone faces, and already after 3–6 months, we had defined solid programs,” Muijs explains.

robot with a control cabin. The robot is designed to replace manual blasting and is suited perfectly for non-serial and serial production. Automatic blast programs can be easily made by Blastman Studio.
Addressing challenges with Blastman’s expertise
Operating in an environment with old containers meant that dust accumulation posed a significant challenge. As Muijs’ blasting chamber was initially designed for blasting new workpieces, the system had to endure more dust than it was meant to. This caused, for example, the hoses to wear out quickly. “Blastman stepped in right away with tailored dust control solutions that resolved our issue. The situation was handled very quickly and efficiently,” Muijs recalls.

Beyond technical solutions, Muijs emphasizes the value of reliable support.
“If I send them an email, I receive a response within a few hours. Sometimes, it might end up building into a chain
with 5–6 people sharing ideas with me, or with each other. I like that. What’s more, I always get a follow-up to ensure everything is fine. Problems are solved very fast with Blastman,” he states.
The value of aftersales support
Blastman’s commitment to customer success extends beyond installation. It’s after-sales services provide contracts either during projects or for existing customers, including scheduled maintenance, programming services, and any process-related assistance, as well as spare parts supply to enable customers to maximize uptime and system longevity.
Muijs Containerreparatie recently renewed their Service Contract, ensuring continued maintenance and spare parts availability. “Everything is running smoothly,” Leko Muijs notes, adding about the importance of cooperation.
“Some companies simply provide the machinery. Blastman’s approach goes beyond that—it’s about long-term partnership and operational reliability. For us, also, the procuring of new robots in the future is easier and faster because we already know we can lean on Blastman. That trust is crucial,” Muijs emphasizes.
Expansion of automated blasting
With Blastman’s aid, Muijs has doubled its painting capacity. Encouraged by the success of its robotic blasting system, Muijs has built a second painting chamber and is expanding its operations by building a third and creating new business.
“We are starting an extra company solely for blasting and painting metal structures,” Muijs reveals. The investment in automation has not only improved speed and quality but also enhanced workplace safety and employee well-being.
For Muijs Containerreparatie, Blastman Robotics has proven to be more than a supplier—they are a trusted partner in innovation and efficiency. With automation driving productivity and after-sales support ensuring reliability, Muijs is well-positioned for future growth.
