ENSURING SAFE AND EFFECTIVE WINTER PAINTING: HEATING TIPS FOR YOUR SCHEME As winter approaches, protecting your paint stock from the cold becomes increasingly important. Cold temperatures can adversely affect paint quality, making proper heating in your mixing room essential for achieving the best results. Here are some key considerations to ensure your heating equipment is safe, compliant, and effective this season.
Use Correctly Rated Heaters for Safety and Compliance It’s crucial to verify that the heaters used in your mixing room meet the appropriate standards. Avoid using standard household oil-filled radiators and fan heaters, as these do not conform to the ATEX standard—a safety requirement for explosive atmospheres. Using non-compliant heaters not only risks safety but could also invalidate
your insurance. ATEX-approved heaters display the “EX” logo and are typically fitted with thermostats. Make sure the thermostat is set to approximately 21°C to maintain optimal working conditions. If the heater features day programmable settings, ensure they are configured to raise the temperature before work begins and reduce it at the end of the day. This approach promotes efficient energy use while maintaining a safe environment.
Maintain and Position Heaters Properly Regular cleaning and maintenance are vital, especially for older heater models with long, rectangular designs. These units are usually placed low down and can become contaminated with paint, dust, or debris—they are sometimes used as a shelf. Check that these heaters are installed horizontally, not vertically, as vertical placement can cause hot spots and push the unit outside of its certified operational temperature. Modern, ceiling-mounted heaters are the best option for mixing rooms. Placing heaters on the ceiling allows heated air to enter the space effectively. Since the room’s air inlet is located in the ceiling area, this positioning ensures the air is heated as it enters, rather than as it exits, leading to more consistent temperature control.
2
Optimal Placement and Room Ventilation
mixing room is vital for cost-effective, high-quality painting.
Proper placement of air outlets is also important. Exit points should be positioned approximately one meter up the wall, approximately waist height, and on the opposite side of the room from the entry. Because solvent vapours are heavier than air, ceiling-mounted heaters work best—the Air in mixing rooms is drawn through the room top to bottom, despite heat rising.
In Summary
Maintaining Ideal Painting Conditions Paints mix best above 15°C, where their viscosity flows more smoothly, ensuring easy dispensing when mixing. Temperatures below 5°C can damage certain paints, making them unusable and costly to replace. Therefore, maintaining a stable, warm environment in your
Use ATEX-approved heaters with thermostats set around 21°C. Regularly clean and inspect older heaters, ensuring correct horizontal installation. Prefer ceiling-mounted units for better air circulation. Maintain room temperatures above 15°C for optimal paint performance. Properly position extraction outlets to facilitate effective airflow and Infrared Curing Lamps vapour control. By adhering to these guidelines, you’ll ensure a safer, more efficient winter painting process—protecting your materials and your team all season long.

QUALICOAT UK & IRELAND
QUALICOAT AND THE GROWTH OF QUALITY POWDER COATINGS By Chris Mansfield - QUALICOAT Chair The growth in quality architectural powder coatings specified to the QUALICOAT Specification is driven primarily by increasing expectations around durability and long-term performance. As buildings become more complex and client demands rise, architects and façade engineers are seeking guarantees that coated aluminium will maintain colour, gloss, and surface integrity for decades. QUALICOAT’s rigorous testing regime which covers pre-treatment, application, curing and weathering performance, gives specifiers confidence that the finish will perform consistently across projects and climates. This assurance is particularly valued as projects push for extended lifecycle efficiencies and reduced maintenance requirements. A second major factor is the industrywide shift towards greater transparency and accountability in material selection. With more emphasis on traceability, verified performance and proven compliance. QUALICOAT offers a recognised, independent benchmark that distinguishes genuinely high-quality coatings from unverified alternatives. The Specification sets clear, measurable standards for coaters and suppliers, helping architects avoid the risks associated with poor pre-treatment, inconsistent film thicknesses, or noncompliant powders. As façade failures and premature degradation become less tolerated in the market QUALICOAT’s stamp of quality offers essential reassurance.
A QUALICOAT Specification is vertically integrated: QUALICOAT licenses pre-treatment systems by subjecting them to a rigorous programme of testing and ongoing auditing. Chemical suppliers submit their pre-treatment systems for evaluation where they are assessed
12
Chris Mansfield QUALICOAT UK & Ireland Chair
for corrosion resistance, coating adhesion, reproducibility, and compatibility with approved powders. These systems undergo laboratory testing, real-world weathering trials, and performance checks against the QUALICOAT Specification. Once approved, the pre-treatment system is added to QUALICOAT’s list of licensed products, but approval is not permanent, suppliers must pass regular inspections and provide evidence that their formulations and manufacturing processes remain consistent. Powder manufacturers are also licensed in a similar but equally demanding manner. A powder supplier must prove that their products meet QUALICOAT’s strict performance requirements, including mechanical robustness, UV resistance, colour and gloss stability, and long-term exterior durability. Independent laboratories carry out accelerated weathering tests and chemical analyses to verify compliance before a product can be classed as QUALICOAT approved. Like pre-treatment suppliers, powder manufacturers are also subject to continuous monitoring, periodic
inspections, and random sampling to ensure ongoing conformity. This dual licensing system ensures that both pre-treatment and powder supplies are controlled, reliable, and fully compatible with QUALICOAT-licensed coating plants. Sustainability pressures are accelerating the adoption of QUALICOAT-certified finishes. Powder coating is already a low-VOC, efficient, and recyclable finishing method, and QUALICOAT builds on this by promoting robust, long-lasting systems that reduce the need for re-coating or replacement. Manufacturers and coaters adopting QUALICOAT often invest in cleaner technologies, improved pre-treatment systems, and better process control, aligning with environmental certification schemes and whole-life carbon goals. As clients, developers, and regulators place more emphasis on responsible construction, QUALICOAT has become a clear indicator of quality, reliability, and sustainable practice in architectural finishing. As we move into 2026, QUALICOAT UK & Ireland is experiencing a clear upward trajectory in membership and market influence. There has been a steady increase in license applications for powder coat applicators, powder manufacturers and pre-treatment system suppliers joining our ranks. Over thirty major powder coat applicators across the UK and Ireland are now licensed and regularly audited against the QUALICOAT Specification. So why are more coaters joining? There are three main reasons. First, market demand, architects, facade contractors and systems manufacturers increasingly specify the QUALICOAT Specification because it offers recognised assurance of durability, quality and performance for architectural powder
coated aluminium. Second, competitive differentiation, coaters joining QUALICOAT can make use of the QUALICOAT approved quality label, helping them win more premium contracts. Third, process and specification support, QUALICOAT doesn’t just licence, it supports members with training, technical updates and inspection regimes which help coaters raise their internal quality systems and demonstrate compliance. The up-to-date QUALICOAT Specification, which includes QUALICOAT 3.0, is available on request through UK & Ireland Association website, qualicoatuki.org the website also offers an up-to-date list of licensed UK and Ireland Powder Suppliers, Pre-treatment Suppliers and Applicators including the applicators who carry the Seaside class accreditation. Telephone support is available from QUALICOAT UK & Ireland Head Office in the Midlands on 0330 240 9735, the Association can also be followed on Twitter @Qualicoatuki or on LinkedIn www.linkedin.com/ company/qualicoat-uk-&-ireland.

UK ELECTRICITY PRICES: STABILITY… BUT FOR HOW LONG? After a turbulent few years in the energy markets, we’re finally seeing a period of relative calm. UK wholesale electricity prices have been holding steady in the £70–£80/ MWh range a welcome change from the volatility businesses have had to navigate since 2022. But stability doesn’t mean “safe.”
What’s supporting the current equilibrium?
December: The quiet advantage
Warmer temperatures easing short term demand pressures
Historically, December offers a strategic window for procurement. Demand drops as manufacturing and commercial activity slow for the festive period often creating more favourable buying conditions.
A significant dip earlier in the year that reset market expectations Reduced volatility across forward contracts
What could disrupt it?
My advice to clients right now
OPEC’s decision to pause production increases in early 2026 introduces a new layer of uncertainty. Any supply shock in oil markets can quickly spill over into gas—and ultimately electricity—pricing.
Lock in the commodity stability while you still can, and get ahead of the non commodity increases coming down the line. The January reconciliation could shift the landscape again, just as it did last October when TNUoS jumped from 35% to 93%.
Why this matters for businesses While commodity prices are steady, non commodity costs are set to rise sharply. Ofgem’s draft determinations point to a 93% increase from April 2026, with projections suggesting TNUoS could rise more than 250% by 2030. This is where timing becomes critical.

QUALICOAT IMPRESSES AT ZAK LONDON As someone who has watched the Zak World of Façades series evolve over the years, I have seen the London edition grow into one of its most influential platforms, something that became especially clear at the 200th conference. Its success in the UK stems largely from the industry’s increasing need for a forum that brings clarity to rapidly changing façade regulations, sustainability targets and design expectations. Each year, the event manages to stay one step ahead of these shifts, offering insights that I can immediately relate to and the challenges facing UK architects, engineers, and developers.
I’ve also noticed how the 200th London edition stood out for its depth of expertise. The calibre of speakers and exhibitors has risen year after year, and the UK audience responds to that. When leaders in façade engineering, architecture, and materials innovation come together in one place, it becomes a rare opportunity not just to listen, but to engage, question, and share. The conference feels less like a series of presentations and more like a gathering of people genuinely interested in pushing the building envelope industry forward. What strikes me most though, is the networking energy that Zak events generate in London. The UK’s façade supply chain is incredibly diverse, and the conference manages to bring all of it under one roof, specifiers, contractors, manufacturers, consultants, and clients. By the time the 200th edition arrived, the event had become a must-attend date in the UK construction calendar. Its ongoing success is, in my view, a reflection of how effectively it connects people, ideas, and innovations at a time when the façade sector is evolving faster than ever. Attending the 200th Zak conference in
Chris Mansfield QUALICOAT UK & Ireland Chair
London was genuinely valuable for QUALICOAT and for me as the Chair of QUALICOAT UK & Ireland. The event brought together exactly the audience we aim to reach, architects, façade engineers, developers and system manufacturers who are increasingly focused on durability, compliance, and responsible material selection. Being present allowed me to speak directly with professionals who are specifying coated aluminium every day, giving QUALICOAT an ideal platform to reinforce the benefits of certified coating systems and the risks of relying on unverified finishes. What stood out for me was the level of engagement. Many attendees were already familiar with QUALICOAT by name, but they appreciated the opportunity to ask deeper questions about pre-treatment control, powder approval processes, and system audits. These conversations helped clarify that QUALICOAT is not just a badge, it is a fully integrated quality system that supports long-term façade performance. This kind of clarity is hard to deliver through brochures or digital campaigns, but at Zak, it happened naturally in discussions throughout the day. I want to personally thank Coby Armar, our Secretary General from Head Office in Zurich, for delivering a QUALICOAT presentation at Zak London; his willingness to share his expertise and
28
represent the specification at such a high-profile event means a great deal. His deep understanding of coating performance, pre-treatment control, and system compliance brings real clarity to an audience that values accuracy and substance and I am genuinely grateful for his commitment to helping strengthen QUALICOAT’s presence within the UK and Ireland façade community. Finally, the conference allowed QUALICOAT to strengthen relationships across the supply chain. Manufacturers, coaters, and specification leaders were all under one roof and I was able to meet both long-standing partners and new contacts interested in adopting the Specification. The visibility QUALICOAT gained at such a milestone event reinforced our
position in the UK market and helped demonstrate why certified architectural coatings are becoming a fundamental part of responsible façade design. Telephone support is available from QUALICOAT UK & Ireland Head Office in the Midlands on 0330 240 9735, the Association can also be followed on Twitter @Qualicoatuki or on LinkedIn www.linkedin.com/company/qualicoat-uk-&-ireland.

TESTING & MEASUREMENT
MEASUREMENT OF UNCURED DRY POWDER TO GIVE PREDICTED CURED THICKNESS WITH DEFELSKO’S POSITEST PC Reasons to measure film thickness Overview Measurement of film thickness should be a routine event for all powder coaters. Regular measurement helps control material cost, manage application efficiency, maintain finish quality and to ensure specific standard are maintained. Powder coating manufacturers and certain associations recommend target film thickness ranges to achieve the best performance characteristics and customers expect these parameters to be met. The PosiTest PC gives you the ability to non-destructively measure the uncured dry powder to give you the predicted cured thickness between 20-100um without leaving marks that affect the finish.
Film thickness is arguably the single most important measurement made during the application and inspection of protective coatings. Powder coatings are designed to perform their intended function when applied within a thickness range specified by the manufacturer. Many physical and appearance properties of the finished coating are directly affected by the dry film thickness (DFT). DFT can affect the colour, gloss, surface profile, adhesion, flexibility, impact resistance, and hardness of the coating. The fit of pieces assembled after coating can also be affected when film thickness isn’t within tolerance. Precisely measuring finish thickness has other benefits, too. Whether to meet International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO), certain association tolerances, or customer requirements for process control, companies need to verify coating quality to avoid wasting money reworking products. By checking their application equipment, they ensure the coating is being applied in compliance with the manufacturers’ recommendations. Applicators must apply the powder evenly and according to the product specification sheet. Applying excessive DFT not only is wasteful, but also risks the possibility of incomplete cure and can drastically reduce overall performance of the coating system. High film builds often result in poor adhesion. The coating tends to peel or chip from the substrate. Regular testing can reduce the number of internal reworks and customer returns due to finishing defects.
Pre-cure film thickness measurement It is possible, and in some circumstances more desirable, to measure a coating immediately after application, prior to cure, to predict the thickness of the cured powder. If a coating has been improperly applied, correction after it has dried or chemically cured requires costly extra labour time, may lead to contamination of the film, and may introduce problems of adhesion and integrity of the coating system. Measuring film thickness during application can determine the need for immediate correction and adjustment by the applicator.
Dry powder measurement Most powder coating specifications give cured thickness targets, it’s possible to determine if applied powder is within thickness specifications before the finality of curing. There are good reasons for wanting an accurate prediction of cured DFT, especially on moving lines. Depending upon the
36

TESTING & MEASUREMENT
length of the oven, the number of parts being cured, as well as the time required for the curing process and for manual DFT measurement after curing, there is a considerable delay before the operator can intervene in the application process to make any necessary changes. If coating defects are discovered, a considerable number of coated parts have to be reworked in a repair loop, or if reworking proves to be too expensive, they may even have to be scrapped. For some operations, these disadvantages are no longer acceptable for meeting the demands of modern finishing processes.
work right out of the box for most powders. Their simplicity of operation and ergonomic design allow them to be used quickly and efficiently by line operators. Non-contact coating thickness measurement instruments have the decisive advantage of being non-destructive. This means that, after measurement, the measured components can be re-introduced into the ongoing process. The PosiTest PC can also be recalibrated to your specific powder if you find it reads out of tolerance with your pre and post cured DFT checks. It also has a scan mode to continuously take measurements, ideal for ensuring powder coverage over large areas.
Measuring powder in the pre-cured, pre-gelled state ensures correct cured film thickness. It enables the application system to be set up and fine-tuned prior to curing. In turn, this will reduce the amount of scrap and over-spray. Accurate predictions help avoid stripping and re-coating, which can cause problems with adhesion and coating integrity.

WALL THICKNESS MEASUREMENT FOR QC IN PLASTIC PRODUCTION If you are a production or quality engineer in a blow-moulding factory making PET soft drink bottles, why should you be concerned about the plastic wall thickness - and how do you measure it? Is it the same for other blow-moulded and thermoformed packaging containers? Alison Fox, Dyne Testing Sales Manager at Intertronics, presents some answers. The structural integrity and safety of the bottle is paramount. Insufficient wall thickness can lead to bottle deformation, cracking, or bursting under pressure. On the other hand, overly thick walls waste materials and increase your costs without proportionate performance benefits. PET resin represents a substantial cost of the bottle. Understanding the wall thickness helps control resin use, which helps with your profitability; in an intensely competitive industry, profit improvement is always welcome. If you can safely reduce resin use (and still comply with regulatory standards and customer specifications), then this can help with sustainability goals, and lessen environmental impact through minimising waste and recycling efficiency. So how do you measure wall thickness? You could take a scalpel, cut out a section (watch your fingers!), and measure the thickness with calipers. You might need to repeat this on the neck, shoulder, label area, body, base, and critical stress points, as these are areas prone to variation.
These days, a non-destructive method is usually preferred. It will be faster, simpler, accurate and repeatable – and it should be fully digital, so that your regular sampling from production runs is collected and tracked over time. You can use SPC software to detect trends and variations early, enabling proactive process adjustments. Ultrasonic thickness gauges are more often used for large, rigid parts which are eventually used across manufacturing in industries such as plumbing and piping, automotive, and heavy industrial applications. For your PET blow-moulded bottles, thickness measuring instruments based on the Hall effect are in common use. They are suited to thin-walled, complex, and small components, suitable for blow-moulded and thermoformed packaging containers or other parts that require tight tolerances or have irregular shapes. These instruments work by putting a small magnetic steel ball inside the bottle, and the sensor on the outside. The ball is attracted by a powerful magnet positioned directly behind the sensor tip.
The sensor measures the magnetic field strength through the PET wall, and the intensity of the detected magnetic field correlates precisely to the distance between the ball and the sensor essentially the bottle’s wall thickness. Like those games you have as a child, where a magnetic wand is used to guide metal balls through a maze under a clear cover, the ball and sensor can be moved along the entire surface of the part, even into the small, complex, or curved areas. This straightforward thickness measurement can be used on non-magnetic materials such as the plastics used in packaging, but also glass, synthetics, non-ferrous metals, and composites. The latest instruments using this technology, like the ElektroPhysik MiniTest FH, should offer you measurement accuracy better than ± (1 µm + 0.5 % of reading) on up to a 24 mm wall thickness. It should have an intuitive, menu driven interface to allow you to capture the data, store as much data as you need and interfaces (USB, RS232C or Blue-Tooth) for transferring this data to a computer or directly into your QA software. It should be quick and easy to calibrate and offer a range of sensors to deal with your varied product sizes and geometries. And it should have an industrial grade build quality, robust enough for your factory. You might still want to cut apart some bottles and wield your calipers from time to time. Periodic destructive testing complements routine non-destructive methods, ensuring high accuracy, validating equipment, diagnosing complex issues, and ensuring rigorous process control and compliance. But the use of thickness measuring instruments based on the Hall effect might be your technique of choice for routinely managing wall thickness. With robust measurement and control processes, you can ensure high-quality parts, minimise costs, enhance product safety, and support sustainability objectives. OPEN YOUR EYES TO THE MYSTERIES OF YOUR PAINT OVEN! ... Employ the PhoenixTM Optical Profiling System PhoenixTM has developed a unique new Paint Process monitoring system, allowing for the first time, not only the traditional temperature profiling of the product temperature through the oven but also optical profiling of the products journey. The TS64 thermal barrier permits in a single barrier the facility to both protect the PhoenixTM data logger and the PhoenixTM Optic system (video camera with independent illumination) with a thermal performance of 3 hours at 200 °C. The thermal barrier, incorporating a specially designed heat sink, can be adapted to allow either temperature profiling or optical profiling runs to be performed. Although it is most likely that the different monitoring operations will be best performed sequentially due to different set-up / mounting requirement the system can be used to perform

simultaneous product temperature monitoring and optical profiling in a single pass through the oven if required. For the first time ever, you can potentially not only determine oven temperature uniformity problems from the temperature profile graph but complement this data with video evidence from inside the oven
as to the possible root cause of the temperature problem. With a single system you can not only highlight hot and cold spots from the temperature data, which may affect the quality of the paint cure, but quickly and efficiently identify the physical oven fault causing the problem. Use the Optic system to discover oven problems such as faulty fans, blocked ducting or even damage to the internal oven structure or insulation. The PhoenixTM Optic system allows thru-process paint defect detection using Optical Profiling. The high-resolution video camera can safely travel through the paint oven with an independent torch recording video footage of what the product sees. The system is just like your car ‘Dash Cam’ the only difference being that the journey is through a cure oven operating up to 200 °C. The Optic system can be fixed on a test body with an adjustable mount option allowing monitoring of the exterior of a separate production body shell or potentially directly on a production body itself.

TESTING & MEASUREMENT
MEASUREMENT OF POWDER LAYER THICKNESSES Powder coating is a widely used method for coating steel, galvanized steel and aluminium, which is used for functional and decorative purposes on products such as household appliances, facades, furniture and automobiles. Measuring the thickness of applied powder coating is a necessary requirement for coaters and those performing incoming inspection of finished goods. Portable FISCHER handheld gauges, based on magnetic induction and eddy current, are the preferred instruments for powder coating thickness measurement. Powder coating is used worldwide on everything from lawn and garden equipment to furniture, appliances and components. The thickness of the powder coating determines how long the piece will last, how it will look, and in some cases even determines the colour of the item. Therefore, measuring the thickness correctly is essential. With the high-cost competition today, it is extremely important to stick to the
thickness specification when applying the coating. A portable FISCHER gauge is used to monitor the thickness of the powder coating. Compliance with the specification is thus guaranteed and thousands of euros in costs can be saved over longer periods of time. The table shows how the use of a FISCHER measuring device provides cost savings based on the annual purchase of powder: It should be noted in the table that coating thickness differences of only 1µm, if properly measured and controlled, can realize a significant cost reduction, helping the coater to work more economically in this way. A prerequisite for this, however, is that the instruments used for quality control operate with outstanding repeatability in the micrometre range.
50
Equally important is the use of certified calibration foils to set and verify the accuracy of the gauge. This is something that is included with FISCHER instruments and ensures the accuracy necessary to monitor and adjust a powder coating. Conclusion: Because powder coatings are applied to such a wide variety of parts, it is important to select the ideally suited measuring instrument and probe. FISCHER offers a wide range of measuring instruments and measuring probes. One example is the small, handy and robust DUALSCOPE® MP0 and MP0R pocket instrument and the flexible DMP® instrument series with numerous interchangeable precision measuring probes for the most demanding measuring applications.

HADLEIGH ENTERPRISES OFFERS SPECIALIST MASKING TAPE EXPERIENCE AND CAPABILITY With applications ranging from powder coating to corrosion protection, Hadleigh Enterprises Ltd. brings five decades’ of experience. Hadleigh Enterprises Ltd has been trading since 1971 as an independent family business, gaining ISO 9001 in 1992. The Essex-based company stocks and supplies an extensive choice of masking products, all sourced from leading manufacturers. The metal processing and surface finishing sector is a key market for its services with a diverse range of needs met by Hadleigh’s ability to match product type, volume and design to exact requirements. “So many individual masking tape applications are unique to specific processes, because of this we have found it is vital to work as closely as possible with each customer to develop highly specific solutions,” says David Ogles, Hadleigh Enterprises’ Managing Director. “By being involved from the outset, and with ongoing production reviews, we can look not only to supply the most appropriate masking system, but can also ensure the customer benefits from continuous innovation – all as part of a
structured application process.” This last point, he believes, is often crucial. For example, the company’s willingness to develop prototype solutions that address key factors, such as masking accuracy and adhesion, is extremely important and can have a fundamental bearing on ongoing production operations. This also helps to ensure that leading edge developments, such as very high bond performance, the ability to fulfil metal-to-metal applications and high temperature capability of up to 380°C, come under the spotlight every time. Hadleigh Enterprises hold the accreditation – EN9100:2016 certification – which is of particular note to those involved in the aerospace sector. “Aerospace has long been one of the markets in which we operate and this accreditation – which is technically equivalent to AS9100D – marks a level of operational capability that will build on the confidence that
our customers have in our services,” explains David Ogles. “The standard reflects the importance attributed to supply chain quality, not least in the context of safety of goods throughout their life cycle which is a major factor, of course, in the aerospace sector,” adds David Ogles. “Overall, this is seen as part of the drive towards establishing commonality of aviation, space and defence quality systems and we are delighted that it underscores our role in these extremely challenging fields.” Hadleigh Enterprises sources master rolls from leading manufacturers before slitting and shaping them, often to produce die-cut shapes from engineering drawings, to meet exact customer requirements. The company undertakes all conversion in-house to optimise control of both quality and delivery, and can achieve slitting tolerances of +/– 0.2 mm. “We are very happy to provide material in quantities of all sizes, even down to a single roll which may be all that is initially required for a prototyping operation,” continues David Ogles. In so many sectors of the metal finishing and surface treatment industry, the benefits of Hadleigh Enterprises’ capability and experience will be widely acknowledged. “As masking quality is often so closely linked to production results, it is vital that the need for optimised masking is not overlooked,” concludes David Ogles. Full details are available by contacting Hadleigh Enterprises by phone or email. Telephone: 01268 572255 Email: sales@hadleightapes.co.uk Visit: www.hadleigh-tapes.co.uk

PAINT & POWDER
PAINT CURING DURING THE COLDER MONTHS Energy saving has become a buzz phrase—and an economic necessity—over the last few years. Paint manufacturers have launched low-bake, air-dry, and moisture-cure products to reduce the energy consumed by the spray booth. With other overheads increasing, along with salaries, the need to improve efficiency within the body shop has become critical. Infra-red technologies have existed for a long time and are able to decrease the time taken to cure paints, freeing up the booth so more vehicles can be processed. A typical primed panel can be ready to work on in well under 10 minutes, while a lacquered panel can be ready to polish in a similar length of time—once it has cooled. This reduces energy usage as well as saving time. We calculate that an infra-red light will use 0.4 kilowatt-hours or less. How much energy is the booth using during a 20-minute bake cycle at 30°C, let alone a full bake cycle? It’s not just primer and lacquer that can be cured using infra-red lights. Basecoats and adhesives can also be cured more efficiently using infra-red heat. Infra-red curing lights are available in either medium-wave or short-wave formats. Medium-wave infra-red is similar to the heaters seen in pub gardens: the light appears red and warms both the air and the panel. Short-wave infra-red is much clearer; it passes through the air and mainly heats the panel itself, making it far more efficient at transferring heat directly to the substrate. Infra-red lamps with a reddish light are
56
generally found in more cost-effective units, ranging from £199.00 for a 1 kW unit to £1,665.00 for a 6 kW lamp. Short-wave, clearer units start at £795.45 for a 1 kW light and range up to £8,863.64 for a 12 kW unit. So why the cost difference? Lower-priced lights tend to have a shorter bulb life expectancy and fewer features. Short-wave lamps, by contrast, typically offer up to 20,000 hours of bulb life. This is due to the type of bulb used, the way the lights are constructed, and how they are cooled during operation. They can also be programmed to suit specific paint brands, allowing for even greater results. Both types of infra-red light work by heating the panel, which causes solvents in the paint to evaporate. Medium-wave (reddish) lamps tend to cure from the surface down, while short-wave lamps cure from the substrate upwards. This generally reduces the risk of trapping solvent within the paint layer. If solvent is trapped, surface cratering can occur. This is not a fault of the lamp, but a result of incorrect use. Patience at the beginning of a job is key—start slowly and finish strong. The introduction of UV primers and lacquers, along with dedicated curing
lights, has enabled even faster job turnaround times. Redashe offers all of these lights, along with full technical support. If you would like to see any of the units in action or arrange a demonstration, please speak to Neil Buckley or contact the Redashe team.
Are you tired of watching paint dry? Maximise the potential speed of air-dry products with the latest Redashe infra-red lamps. Our 3CW lamp is equipped with both temperature and distance sensors— features usually found on premium lamps. At only £1,045, it won’t break the bank. Reducing booth power consumption allows the lamp to pay for itself by avoiding unnecessary booth heating. We calculate that an infra-red light will use 0.4 kilowatt-hours or less. How much energy does your booth use during a 20-minute bake cycle at 30°C, let alone a full bake cycle? A typical primed panel can be ready to work on in well under 10 minutes, while a lacquered panel can be ready to polish in a similar timeframe—once it has cooled. A UV-primed repair can be cured in as little as one minute using the latest LED light technology, consuming even less power—down to milliwatts. WATER & EFFLUENT TREATMENT
TREATING WATER BASED PAINT WASHINGS Producers and users of water based paints can create large volumes of wastewater through washing of equipment such as spray guns, mixing tanks and coating systems. In many cases the wastewater is stored in tanks or IBC’s prior to being removed from site. The cost of disposal is often expensive. To reduce waste production and harmful environmental effects, this flow of polluted water should be treated. There are several treatment methods. The most common is the addition of coagulants and flocculants. However, these can be difficult to use, as they require precise dosing and subsequent mixing to achieve good results. Finally, the water and sludge produced must be filtered. The results may be compromised by the pH and a high concentration of paint in the water, which prevent proper separation. An ideal method involves distilling the paint emulsion in the same way thinners and solvents are treated. Solutex offer two different evaporation technologies with one shared goal: efficiency, safety, and sustainability in the prduction process. For large volumes, above 250 litres per day, the use of a heat pump evaporator is the most economical solution in terms of energy consumption. Working at a low temperature of around 35° C and thanks to the special scraper featured in the HP-R
62
series evaporators, encrusting liquids do not pose a problem for the proper functioning of the machine. The heat pump system is an efficient way to concentrate liquids and produce distilled water for reuse and a concentrated waste residue for disposal. These fully automatic evaporators are designed to work 24/7 and are controlled by a PLC. They can work with existing storage tanks or IBC’s significantly reduce waste volumes. For users who need to treat smaller daily volumes, investing in such a system is not justifiable. Solutex has overcome this obstacle with the Ci series concentrator. They work just like a solvent recycler but with added heating power for water. With capacities from 15 litre up to 160 litres they concentrate the waste water producing distilled water that can be recycled. The concentrated waste that is much reduced is collected in a bag ready to be disposed of. The units being air cooled only require an electrical power supply and are easily installed. HELP PREVENT WORKPLACE POLLUTION AND CUT ENERGY COSTS Protect the environment and your workforce Open chemical and heated process tanks are a major source of workplace emissions. Simply covering them can reduce evaporation by more than 91%, cutting toxic fumes that would otherwise escape into the atmosphere.
This simple step not only benefits the environment but also improves air quality for employees and nearby residents. By reducing corrosive vapours, you can extend building life and prevent costly damage to plant infrastructure. Tank covers also lower the risk of splashes and spills, helping to keep your workplace safer.
Save money with a simple solution Few people realise how much energy is lost through the surface of open tanks. Installing Euro-Matic’s Croffles – cross-floating hollow balls – can deliver energy savings of up to 75%. Used in factories and production plants worldwide, Croffles form a floating layer that conserves heat, reduces evaporation, and prevents odours. They are an easy, low-maintenance alternative to fixed lids or complex mechanical systems. Unlike rigid covers, Croffles move freely around pipework or equipment and automatically return to position when the tank is in use, providing continuous protection against heat loss and chemical vapour.
Proven results across industries Euro-Matic’s floating ball covers have been used for decades in surface treatment, metal finishing, chemical processing, and water treatment. Businesses adopting this technology report immediate savings on heating costs, better working conditions, and a measurable reduction in emissions.
Order online or speak to our team To find out how much your business could save, visit www.euro-matic.co.uk or call 03303 110 003. Our technical team will help you choose the correct material, ball size, and quantity for your tanks.
Try our Ball Calculator For quick estimates, the free Ball Calculator on our website lets you enter tank dimensions and instantly calculate how many balls you’ll need: www.euro-matic.co.uk/ball-calculator

STABILITY, GROWTH AND BIG MOVES AHEAD: FRASER TECHNOLOGIES REFLECTS ON 2025 AND WHAT’S NEXT As Fraser Technologies reflects on 2025, the year is best characterised as one of consolidation, capability-building, and strategic progression. With strengthened in-house expertise, an expanded approach to partnerships, and continued evolution across its equipment and chemistry portfolio, the business has reinforced the foundations required for its next phase of growth. To explore these developments and the direction ahead, Jack Smith, Commercial Manager at Fraser Technologies, shares insight into the company’s priorities, achievements, and future opportunities. With over 55 years in the precision cleaning industry, Fraser Technologies continues to build on a stable legacy while evolving to meet changing market demands. At its core remains a customerfirst, engineering-led philosophy focused on delivering technically optimised solutions. This approach ensures the company remains agile, responsive, and aligned with real-world industrial requirements.
Looking ahead to 2026, Fraser Technologies is preparing for several notable industry shifts. The exit of 3M from the market has prompted increased support for customers transitioning to alternative solutions without compromising performance or compliance. At the same time, rising demand for data centre cooling and heat transfer fluids, driven largely by advancements in AI, has opened new growth avenues. These developments align closely with Fraser’s expertise in high-performance fluids, carrier fluids, rinse agents and equipment solutions. Innovation remains a key driver. The Advanced Vapour Degreasing (AVD) multi- solvent cleaning equipment, launched in 2024 and further developed throughout 2025, has delivered strong results across R&D and application trials. New technologies have been applied to a wider range of components, materials, and solvents, enabling Frasers to explore applications not previously considered viable. This reflects a balanced investment strategy that responds to customer demand while proactively identifying emerging technologies. Throughout 2025, Fraser Technologies continued to strengthen its multi-OEM approach, expanding relationships with a wider range of equipment partners. This growth enhances the company’s ability to specify the most appropriate technologies for each application, delivering truly bespoke, engineered solutions while reinforcing Fraser’s position as an independent expert partner. Customer-centricity has also driven service expansion. The appointment of a Business Retention Manager has reinforced Fraser’s “cradle-to-grave” support model, with services now extending beyond equipment supply to include process audits, waste removal,
70
maintenance packages, chemical monitoring, and consumables stockholding. This holistic approach allows customers to rely on Fraser Technologies for both technology and long-term operational support. Organisational growth underpins this progress. Strategic hires across business retention, supply chain, and finance have strengthened internal capabilities and operational resilience, positioning the company for sustainable expansion. While precision cleaning remains the baseline, Fraser Technologies’ portfolio extends into areas such as AI-related cooling, PFAS-related challenges, and low-emission applications. Customers increasingly seek guidance on complex, emerging issues, and Fraser continues to provide clarity, safe options, and future-proofed solutions. Reflecting on 2025, the focus has been on stabilising the foundations, strengthening teams, partnerships, and operational robustness. As Fraser Technologies moves into 2026, its ambitions are growing, but its principles remain unchanged: delivering engineering-led, customer-focused solutions that perform in the real world. PRODUCTS & PROCESSES
POWERING UP BUSINESS GROWTH Reducing waste and improving efficiency are essential for protecting your bottom line. But when it comes to boosting profitability, there’s only so much you can achieve by cost cutting alone. For real growth, you need to be able to deliver more and better products to a broadening customer base.
Eliminating the challenges associated with legacy rectifiers Older rectifiers weren’t built with efficiency in mind. At best, many only operate at only 70-80%, even in ideal conditions. Thyristor rectifiers, for example, were designed for a maximum temperature of 35°C, and running at full capacity for long periods risks them overheating. Many plating shops sought to solve this by buying larger systems than they needed, creating a different problem: excessive energy consumption. Yet this can be easily avoided by choosing the right rectifier technology, which makes it possible to reduce energy consumption – even at a higher amperage. Energy efficiency is not the only issue with legacy rectifiers – the current itself
needs to be stable. Even with filters installed, high-ripple current can still negatively affect product quality by inducing fluctuating magnetic fields, leading to uneven and inconsistent deposition.
Industry benchmarks suggest that you can achieve a 10-15% quality improvement for every 3% reduction you make in current ripple. Inaccurate current delivery, often seen in older rectifiers, can also cause plating results to drift, extend the process time, and increase chemical consumption. When the ripple is minimized and current accuracy is high, deposition becomes stable, efficient, and predictable – which means less scrap and reworking. Control your current to unlock revenue potential Precise control over the current gives you precise control over the plating process. This accuracy gives you faster cycle times and higher throughput, as well as enabling you to plate more complex products. This expanded capability potentially opens up possibilities for reaching new customers and new markets, as well as making your business more competitive. For example, one of our hard chrome plating customers managed to halve their deposition time, from 32 hours to only 16. To say their plant
72
manager was pleased is an understatement:
“We have gone from manual control, poor efficiency and fluctuating quality to automated control, and excellent efficiency. We saved on chemicals and post-chrome processing for more competitive pricing structures.”
Get the low-down on cutting costs and growing revenue This year, KraftPowercon marks 90 years in the power electronics business. We are ready to help you growing revenues and optimizing your costs. If you’d like to hear more about the how’s, watch our latest webinar which shows how the right power supply strategy does much more than cut costs, and how you can enhance quality, productivity, and competitiveness to strengthen your position in the market.
How much excess energy are your rectifiers using? If you don’t know how much of your energy bill is down to your rectifiers, it’s worth finding out how much of a drain they are on your resources.
