100 years The IMF are 100 years old in 2025 In 2025 the Institute of Materials Finishing is celebrating our 100 birthday.

Founded in 1925 as the Electrodepositors Society to serve the electroplating industries, we became the Institute of Metal Finishing in the 1950’s. In 2012 we re-badged ourselves as the Institute of Materials Finishing, to better reflect our involvement with all aspects of surface engineering.

Our celebrations begin in February 2025 at the Surface World exhibition, with a centenary dinner taking place on the first evening, Wednesday 26th February 2025.

Tickets will be £35 per person or a table of 10 for £300.

There will be a 3 course dinner followed by entertainment.

QUALICOAT at Zak

By Angus Mackie - QUALICOAT Chair This is the first time that QUALICOAT has sponsored this keynote event for the Facade Industry. Zak is held annually in London and draws in decision makers from across the facade supply chain. It was an excellent platform for members of the Association to engage with the supply chain and to understand how they view the QUALICOAT Specification Whilst we learnt that most specifiers had an good understanding that the QUALICOAT Specification was aimed at providing quality architectural powder coating, there remains questions about what and where QUALICOAT comes from. Here are some of the delegates questions answered:

which is updated in real time following research and development undertaken in working groups with an aim to further improve sustainability of architectural finishes. The Specification remains free to download from the Association website.

“Where has the Specification originated from?”

Nothing. The Specification is voluntary and it is aimed at primarily offering best practice to ensure both best quality and consistency of quality.

A licensed coater commits to the specification and only after passing rigorous inspections for post plant and processes will they be granted the coveted QUALICOAT licence.

Back in 1986 several European associations with members who coat architectural profiles formed the QUALICOAT organisation.

Their goal was to raise and standardise the quality of architectural coatings throughout Europe by laying down a common Specification. Today the Association is globally recognised with almost 400 licensed coaters across the globe.

Not tied to any national association, members develop the Specification

“What does it cost to specify?”

“How does QUALICOAT differ from BS12206, GSM or AAMA standards?”

QUALICOAT is by far the most widely accepted Specification for powder coating across the globe, ensuring that a specification made in the UK can be

delivered in any country. The Association also ensures that the upstream suppliers are also quality checked, both powders and pretreatment systems used by coaters must be approved by QUALICOAT. All major suppliers of powders and pretreatment systems are members of QUALICOAT. Unlike other ‘standards’, QUALICOAT licence holders are independently third party accredited through a procedure of unannounced inspections. Any licence holder failing these inspection can lose their licence to offer the QUALICOAT label of conformity.

How much longer do Class 2 powders last compared to Class 1?”

It is true to say that Class 2 powders offer a more weather resistant finish, especially when it comes to UV resilience, however it is the combination of quality pretreatment and powder coating that can realise these benefits. Life expectancy is also influenced by the project’s location and the maintenance regime that is adopted. QUALICOAT members can advise on the best systems to adopt for any given geographical location.

“Do QUALICOAT offer a warranty on coatings?”

QUALICOAT do not offer a warranty on the Specification as it is purely a quality

label. Licensed members are free to offer warranties and many do to meet the requirements of contractors and clients. Correctly specified and maintained, a QUALICOAT coated

project should offer many decades of good service life.

The majority of aluminium systems companies and quality powder coaters in the UK offer powder coating to the

QUALICOAT Specification and membership continues to grow. The Association is also determined to raise awareness to be seen in the industry and is planning to be more visible at future UK & Ireland construction events.

British Coatings Federation ‘cautiously optimistic’ about new Government outline for Chemical Regulations in the UK A newly published ‘policy direction’ by Defra for UK REACH has been received with cautious optimism by the British Coatings Federation.

The new proposals seem to respond to some of the concerns previously expressed by the British Coatings Federation on behalf of the coatings sector and others in the chemicals industry supply chain. These concerns included, in particular, that full data dossiers for all 20,000 chemical substances currently in the EU REACH database did not need to be recreated in a stand-alone UK REACH database.

Instead, today’s statement calls for only ‘the essential minimum’ hazard data to be required for ‘transitional registration’ substances, except in cases where UK regulators’ concern, or global evidence suggests, detailed reviews or more data is needed.

This more targeted approach on ‘hazard’ data for transitional registration substances will be accompanied by a greater focus on collecting ‘use and exposure’ at work data, building knowledge of how chemicals are used across the UK and therefore the risks that might need to be managed. While the latter will still require substantial input from industry, overall, the new proposal seems to offer the potential for a much more workable and proportionate system, without lessening existing protections to the environment or human health and safety.

There will follow a period of consultation on key elements of the scheme, including, crucially, the amount of data required in individual registrations.

Tom Bowtell, CEO of BCF, said: “While the devil will be in the detail, the British Coatings Federation gives an initial cautious welcome to Defra’s new proposals for UK REACH. We are

grateful for the work of officials and Ministers in getting us to this point, but we now need to see the detail in the formal consultation and impact assessment documents, which we hope will be published soon.

“From what we can see so far, though, the new approach seems more proportionate and workable than the original and will mean the UK still remains at the forefront of environmental and human safety when it comes to chemicals regulation.

It takes account of the work carried out elsewhere in the world by other regulatory regimes and allows UK regulators to focus their time and resources on those substances and uses where there may be most legitimate concerns. Indeed, this approach could mean regulators are able to better police concerns than under the current system. Taken together, these steps seem a sensible way to deal with the issue after Brexit.

“We look forward to continuing to engage with Defra through the forthcoming formal consultation process to turn this broad direction of travel into a detailed, workable and proportionate regulation.

As a trade association that represents downstream users of chemicals in a vital part of the UK economy, the BCF is well placed to assist in this process. We want to help ensure the new system is robust yet practical for businesses to comply with easily and

effectively, to help secure the future of UK manufactured formulated products.

“It has taken more than two years to get to this point. However, the seemingly positive steps contained in today’s announcement move us closer to providing industry with the level of certainty it requires about the future of UK chemicals regulations. That certainty is essential to ensure future investment in our sector, and we hope further progress is made quickly from this point on.”

REACH stands for the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation, and Restriction of Chemicals and has been the main piece of legislation governing the use of chemicals across Europe since 2007. When the UK left the EU in 2021, it copied over the EU REACH regulations and had originally planned to duplicate the system, including a full database of chemicals, in the UK, under what were termed Transitional Registration plans. Subsequently, Defra recognised in an impact assessment that the cost to industry of this proposal was disproportionate and began to consult on a more workable Alternative Transitional Registration model (ATRm). Original registration deadlines were delayed to allow this work to take place.

Safetykleen has signed an agreement with Metalwash on 8th November 2023 to acquire control of the majority of the voting rights in Metalwash at both board and shareholder levels.

The planned completion date for this transaction is 21st December 2023.

The agreement also gives Safetykleen an option to acquire the remainder of Metalwash’s shares at a later stage.

HMG support Francis House Children’s Hospice Festival of Christmas Trees Manchester based family business; HMG Paints is supporting Francis House Children’s Hospice as they bring the magic of Christmas to a pop-up shop in Quayside MediaCityUK by filling it with 40 unique Christmas trees.

The Festival of Christmas trees is on display until December 10th and aims to encourage members of the public to place bids on the unique trees, each packed with vouchers, signed football shirts, hampers, vouchers and handmade gifts. Bids can be placed on each tree for five weeks in the run-up to Christmas, either in-store or online at: www.festivaloftrees.co.uk.

The independent paint manufacturer who’s paints and coatings are seen across the country have joined a number of other businesses to help raise funds to support the remarkable work Francis House undertakes.

Turbex make an impact at Surface World 2023 UK leaders in large-scale automated surface treatment lines, Turbex, would like to thank all who visited their stand at Surface World 2023. Their sales team were on hand to promote the systems and solutions provided by their partners, Galvatek: World leaders in surface treatment lines within Aerospace.

Whilst this year’s Surface World show seemed smaller and more focused than last year’s, the reduced scale did have its advantages for the Turbex team, however. Everybody who visited the exhibition came to speak to our salespeople.

There were great quality enquiries for Galvatek’s fully automated surface treatment systems, which is no surprise given their industry-leading results and quality. As a result of the interest, Galvatek will be returning to the UK from Finland for several follow-up meetings with the Turbex team.

Aside from interest in our anodising lines and cleaning systems, the Turbex team were visited by a number of existing or current customers to either progress ongoing projects, or just to say hello in person.

National Galvanizers Invest in the Future of the Industry A director at a top galvanizing firm has been supported to become more sustainability-aware by studying for a Master’s degree.

David Nobes, Technical Services Director at Wedge Group Galvanizing Ltd, is part way through a two-year course in sustainable and ethical business management, with full backing from the firm as part of its ongoing commitment to investing in their people and the planet.

He said: “Sustainability is deemed to be the focus of the next industrial revolution and should be a firm priority for all business owners as they seek to make more conscious, considered and careful decisions. Galvanizers Help Local Business Level Up In an attempt to reach the next level, Lancashire-based fabricators looked to local galvanizers to future-proof a recent project.

Lyndhurst Precision were tasked to create two large cat ladders, as well as a large stairwell with a landing platform to allow access to two wastewater treatment tanks. Measuring up to seven metres tall, Manchester Galvanizing Ltd were called upon thanks to their large hot-dip tanks which could safely and appropriately administer the finish of choice.

Andy Wilding, Technical Manager at Lyndhurst Precision said: “Following the completion of these steel components, we knew we had to apply an appropriate finish that could withstand the elements due to their outdoor location, and ensure that the ladders were safe for many years to come. As an option more cost effective and durable than paint, we sought the support of highly recommended local Manchester Galvanizing.”

At the plant, the items were hotdipped in a bath of molten zinc at temperatures around 450C, which creates a metallurgic bonding, meaning the steel has the greatest resistance to damage and is protected from rust and corrosion for at least 70 years.

“Due to our inexperience of galvanizing, we didn’t anticipate that the parts went in the tanks at an angle, and ideally, we didn’t want them to reach the bottom,” Andy added. “And we hadn’t considered or fully understood the drainage and venting requirements.

But the team at Manchester Galvanizing were fantastic – they thoroughly explained the process, called and quoted to do the drilling for us, and provided us with a poster and toolbox talk explaining what we need to consider in the future. Resources which have been invaluable to share with our design and fitting teams for upcoming projects.

The Challenge A major aerospace manufacturer required 5m3/hr, 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, 840m3 per week deionised water to a standard of <20µScm-1 for operations on a new Blue Etch Anodise Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) line, which was also being designed, manufactured, installed and commissioned by Plastratum engineers.

As the process line was still in the design phase, the drag out and rinsing efficiency was estimated using chemical information supplied and a detailed study of the chemistry conducted to ensure compatibility with the ion exchange resins.

The calculated requirement was for three regenerations per week at a volume of 10.8m3 per regeneration. This projected a reduction in the discharge to foul sewer from 840m3 per week to just 32.4m3 per week, or 96.14% realisable saving.

This reduction delivers both financial and environmental benefits: huge saving in water costs reduced risk of accidental discharge of untreated waste to foul sewer reduced electricity usage by requiring smaller pumps, mixers and treatment monitoring in a vastly smaller effluent treatment plant.

Manufacture, Installation and Commissioning The ion exchange equipment was manufactured at our Birmingham site on steel base frames to reduce installation time at the customers premises. The filtration vessels, ion exchange vessels, pipework and valves were designed using 3D CAD and assembled by our expert engineers.

The tanks required for the system were manufactured to BS EN 12573 and BS EN 13121. All manufacturing was completed under our ISO 9001:2015 quality standard.

Comprehensive commissioning included pipework pressure testing, instrument calibration and setup, chemical delivery observation, ion exchange regeneration, filter backwashes and setting to work.

A full chemical commissioning report was completed, and a Training Manual written and presented to the client’s operators.

The plant now operates at an average of 8µScm-1, well within the 20µScm-1 limit required by the process.

Operations The water recirculation plant is now fully operational and, due to Plastratum’s technically designed fixture holding and progressing the components through the anodising plant, the carry-over of chemicals is less than calculated and the actual regeneration frequency is only once per week at 10.8m3. This provides an increased efficiency in deionised water production to 98.71%.

Assuming a water cost of £2 per m3 (£1 per m3 in, £1 per m3 out) this equates to a saving in water costs alone of over £86,000 per year!

“To put this in context, 43,000m3 is the equivalent to over 17 Olympic sized swimming pools!”

The operator commented that the water treatment equipment “is easy to operate, simple to maintain and is providing recirculated water at a specification that exceeds our requirements for minimal cost in chemicals, operator time and raw materials. Well done and thank you Plastratum

Conclusion The equipment supplied provides the client with a safety critical, reliable, easy-to-operate plant, producing water within the specification required and in an environmentally friendly manner, reducing water, chemical and electrical usage at a low cost per m3.

Pure water for a perfect powder coat Powder coating is going green. In some cases this is the result of legislation which requires existing process cleaning solutions to be replaced with more environmentally friendly ones. Increasingly, however, it’s coating quality that is the driver. Some coating specifications now demand salt spray testing for more than 1000 hours, and that means that surface preparation is absolutely critical. One of the proven ways of achieving high quality surface preparation is the use of pure water. Mains water contains a wide range of dissolved salts. These are harmless in drinking water but can promote corrosion and poor adhesion of powders to metal surfaces.

Using pure water increases the life expectancies of cleaning tanks and sprays and is a proven way of making both the cleaning and protective barrier chemical more effective.

This means longer periods between tank drain downs and cleans, extending process operating time and less maintenance. It also means less wastewater generation and lower operating costs. A more environmentally and sustainable process. All this and improved product quality too.

There are two main processes to produce pure water: ion exchange demineralisation and reverse osmosis (RO). Ion exchange uses a chemically active synthetic resin to remove dissolved ions from water, in exchange for hydrogen in the case of cations and, hydroxyl in the case of anions.

The resulting hydrogen and hydroxyl ions form water molecules. On the other hand, RO passes the water through a semi-permeable membrane which effectively filters out the dissolved ions. Selecting the best process depends on the quality of the mains water supply and the water purity required.

Ion exchange demineralisation is a batch process. The ions removed from solution accumulate on the resins and then have to be removed by regeneration. This uses hydrochloric acid for the cation resin and caustic soda for the anion. The regeneration process isn’t 100% efficient, so some of the chemical – typically about 20% is wasted, and the regenerated resins

also have to be rinsed prior to returning to service. This generates a waste stream with volume equivalent to about 5 - 15% of the plant throughput depending on the raw water quality. RO is a continuous process that uses no chemicals but depends on a high operating pressure generated by an electrically driven pump. This makes it appear more environmentally friendly than ion exchange. The ions removed from the raw water are concentrated into a waste stream that is typically 25% of the throughput suggesting that it is less sustainable.

If the raw water is hard, RO can be fouled by scaling and this is normally prevented by softening upstream of the membranes, but this requires salt and produces more wastewater.

A simple two-stage ion exchange demineralisation system can produce purified water of >1µS/cm conductivity which is equivalent to about 0.5mg/l total dissolved solids (TDS) whilst RO permeate is typically about 5µS/cm (about 2mg/l TDS).

RO has a higher capital cost than ion exchange but operating costs for both processes depend on the system flow rate and the TDS of the raw water. The chemical consumption in ion exchange is directly proportional to the

raw water TDS whilst the power consumption of RO remains fairly constant, so RO becomes more economic for higher TDS raw waters.

The actual cut-off point will depend on the raw water composition, the costs of chemicals and the anticipated lifetime of the plant.

Using pure water in all stages of surface preparation will not only improve the adhesion of the coating but will also extend chemical life and reduce waste. Not only sustainable but also cost effective.

A revolution for the chrome (III) bath treatment Traditionally, to avoid massive pollution of the treatment baths, baths are often completely drained and refilled with brand new chromium (III) solution. Such maintenance represents a significant cost.

It leads to a complete stop of the production, a major quantity of effluent to treat and a nonnegligible cost of a brand new solution.

IONPURE™ treats the chromium (III) bath continuously, keeping metal ion pollution to a minimum. Thus, there is no interruption in production and the volume of effluent is minimal compared to the traditional method. Once the ion exchange resin is saturated (50 g of metal for 1 litre of resin), IONPURE™ switches to regeneration mode to clean the resin of impurities in order to reuse it in the next cycle.

Note: As IONPURE™ does not have an integrated analysis system, regular monitoring and analysis of the chrome plating bath is necessary to trigger the resin regeneration mode.

When the bath analysis reveals an abnormal level of polluting metals, it means that the resin is saturated and that it is time to regenerate it. The operator then activates the “automatic regeneration” mode. The IONPURE will then successively evacuate the metals and regenerate the resin.

Over 20 years ago, I was asked if I would like to set up my own business, Hendor-pe UK Ltd, selling Pumps, Filters and Rectifiers to the UK Surface Treatment industry. At the time I was working for another Pump/Filter manufacturer in the UK as their Technical Manager, I had been there for 12 years, it was a daunting decision with three young children at home.

Myself and my wife visited Hendor in the Netherlands and were extremely impressed with the people, the high quality product range and the pricing!

Some people thought we were crazy trying to introduce another manufacturer to the already crowded market, but we were convinced that this exceptionally high quality, competitively priced product would be readily accepted.

Over 20 years on, we were right, we have built up a loyal customer base in many industries from GMF, Precious metal plating, electronics, Government establishments, Reel to Reel Plating, Aerospace, Automotive, F1 manufacturers etc, etc . One of our proudest moments is when we get

repeat orders from these companies, they like the products we are supplying them.

Hendor was established more than 70 years ago, their principal customer at that time was the mighty Philips in Eindhoven.

Over the years Hendor has become a global leader in manufacturing exceptionally high quality and innovative chemically resistant pumps and filtration products.

In the 90’s, Hendor established partners and distributors located all around the world to enable the supply of products at a moment’s notice.

The Hendor-pe partnership began in 1995 when Hendor-pe Inc in the USA

was established. Since then, Hendor-pe France, Hendor-pe UK, Hendor-pe Spain, China, and Japan have all been introduced to better serve local markets, as well as having independent distributors in other territories.

A lot has changed at Hendor over the last seventy plus years, however, the desire to do business in an innovative and sustainable way has remained a constant. This is why the organisation set the goal of lean manufacturing in 2016. This desire was manifested by introducing a round of investments worth half a million euros. Hendor invested money in new pump design software and automatic welding, installed LED lighting everywhere and organised the workplace in a more efficient way. Through automation, we wanted to obtain a higher output with the same number of people.

The machines are used more efficiently thanks to new planning software. We work with small batches and customise more products in accordance with our customers’ requirements. Not only does

this shorten lead times, but we also use raw materials more economically.

With regard to raw materials, we blend our own mix of Polypropylene pellet types which allows us to mould a Polypropylene perfectly adapted to our industries We at Hendor value social responsibility and act accordingly.

A strategic decision was made to develop the next generation of pumps by a Sustainable Design principle.

By applying this concept both the manufacturing and the life cycle carbon footprint of our products are significantly reduced.

Our filters are an important and successful part of the Hendor legacy.

Henk Bohncke, our former owner, designed them with a clear, innovative vision for the future. They were the first filters in the industry made entirely of polypropylene with a welded base.

For decades, this product has served many companies within industry.

With the advent of new technologies and the search for optimum efficiency, we have developed a new, innovative design under the leadership of our technical director Hessel Bohncke - son of Henk.

These new Hendor filters are even more user-friendly and efficient.

Completely new are the doublewelded bases that ensure less pressure loss, more flow, more reach and more energy efficiency from the motor.

Powder coating without PTFE We all know about the convenience of how nothing sticks to coated pans. In fact, this antiadhesive material was not, as many assume, discovered in space research but is a substance called PTFE. PTFE was developed in 1938 by Dr. Roy Plunkett, an employee of the chemical

company, DuPont. But still, it did find its way into space later - as insulation material for cables, such as in the Apollo missions.

PTFE’s unique properties have enabled its growth into many other areas, such as powder coatings. Thus, when it comes to decorating and protecting a window frame, a fence or a bike, a PTFE-containing powder coating was – up to now – the go-to-choice.

PTFE can enhance the scratch resistance and slip performance or act as a texturizing additive, providing powder coatings with the right consistency and stability for many applications.

However, there are increasing concerns about PTFE’s impact on human health & the environment, leading to the consequential legislative action to potentially restrict its use.

This has resulted in a call for more eco-friendly and PTFE-free alternatives.

Furthermore, if the restrictive policies of EU regulators prevail, PTFE-free solutions will soon become a significant business imperative.

Best of both ideas – answering to the needs of the market To address this challenge, we’ve innovated a PTFE-free texturing agent: Ceridust 8170 M.

Valeo uses Dürr’s rotary atomizer for the first time

The EcoBell cost-effectively paints plastic parts with minimal material consumption Plastic parts are very often painted using conventional spray guns. But with prices for materials and cleaning rising, highspeed rotary atomizers are becoming more and more costeffective. Valeo, a global technology company, is using Dürr’s EcoBell technology for the first time at its production facility in Hungary, resulting in heightened efficiency, increased productivity, and reduced paint consumption.

The EcoBell atomizer series sets the standard for intricate industrial painting tasks with its high application quality, minimal paint consumption, and short flushing time. Plastic parts are often coated by spray guns, which cost less to purchase. Valeo has opted

for a change: For the first time, the global supplier will use high-speed rotary atomizers at its Hungarian site.

In the future, an EcoBell rotary atomizer mounted on a Kawasaki robot will paint plastic interiors for

electric vehicles. With an EcoPump AD package, a fluid board, a twocomponent mixing and dosing system, and the EcoBell high-speed rotary atomizer without high tension, Dürr is supplying the full range of equipment from paint distribution to application for the new paint shop.

Successfully proven compatibility Before implementing any rotary atomizer at Valeo, Dürr had to demonstrate the compatibility of the technology with the company’s processes and standards.

Collaborating closely with partner integrator ERMA Concept, Dürr successfully furnished proof at ERMA Lab test center.

The EcoBell convinces with its high-quality surface finishing results and cost-effectiveness. The atomizer’s high transfer efficiency and mix block upstream on the robot arm greatly reduce paint loss, rinsing agent consumption and minimize required cleaning. In addition, the cycle time is shorter than with the previous application, increasing productivity.

Higher cost savings and efficiency improvements result in the rapid cost recovery of the initial investment for a high-speed rotary atomizer, particularly considering projected increases in paint and rinsing agent costs. Minimal paint loss and rinsing agent consumption also ensure a more sustainable painting process.

MecWash system revolutionises productivity at IMI Truflo Marine The addition of the MecWash MWX300 has made a dramatic impact at IMI Truflo Marine, increasing cleaning productivity over six times whilst vastly reducing the operational manpower required. IMI Truflo Marine noted a significant improvement in both efficiencies and the standard of cleaning which helped the business meet global demand.

The historic naval valve manufacturer make flow control solutions, with over 120,000 valves in service to 24 of the world’s naval fleets.

IMI Truflo Marine contacted Paul Jarratt, sales manager at MecWash, to enquire about upgrading to a high-performance aqueous cleaning system to improve their cleaning programme.

Paul Jarratt comments: “Speaking with the team at IMI Truflo Marine, it was clear we could build a machine that would make a substantial difference to the output of the business. We discussed their current cleaning programme which consisted of two large ultrasonic dip tanks and required a sizable amount of energy and resources.

“The MWX300 was the ideal machine for application at IMI Truflo Marine. The

precision cleaning and sophisticated drying processes would ensure the components are free of contaminants, preserving the critical tolerances necessary. Marine components have very tight tolerances, and even small amounts of dirt or contamination can prevent them from functioning properly,” said Paul.

Previously, only three valve kits could be cleaned with a 30-minute cycle, with the MWX300, 12 kits are being cleaned within 18 mins, with a smooth and polished finish.

“The previous method was manual and required the parts to be blown dry with air guns after washing. Now, the parts are simply placed in the baskets, loaded into the MWX300 and the start button pressed. 18 minutes later, 12 kits of clean and dried parts are ready for the next operation with the minimum of manual intervention which fulfils the brief that we originally presented to MecWash,” said Kurtis.

Spinner hanger blast machine eliminates capacity bottleneck in the paint preparation Because of rapidly increasing demand for powder-coated and wet-painted components GAM Coating had to increase its shot blasting capacity. With a spinner hanger blast machine from Rösler the company purchased a highly flexible “work horse” that excels through excellent shot blasting qualities and low energy consumption.

The practically identical residential buildings at the Ijsselstraat 29a location in Oss, Netherlands, where the brothers Arnold and Marc Princen reside, along with the adjacent manufacturing facility transmit the impression of integrity and reliability. This is the headquarters of GAM Coating, short for Gerrit, Arnold and Marc. The company was founded by the father, Gerrit, in 1972 as an automotive paint and body shop.

Over the past 50 years GAM evolved into a highly professional specialist for powder coating, wet painting, shot blasting, glass bead blasting and grinding. Marc Princen, dressed in an overall covered with paint spots, welcomes us with a smile: “Demand for our services is very high. We would have no excess capacity, even if our facility was twice its current size”.

For example, on Mondays the colour black is applied and on Tuesdays it is the colour blue. If a customer needs a black component on a Tuesday, he must wait until next Monday. We are a lot more flexible and provide our service to our customers as they need it.” Exactly this flexibility, combined with a high coating quality and on-time deliveries, is the reason for the continuously increasing demand from different industrial sectors.

Shot blasting as an eco-friendly paint preparation GAM Coating knows that excellent surface preparation is a key prerequisite for high-quality coatings. Marc Princen comments: “Since it is much more eco-friendly than chemical pretreatment, we are employing shot blasting for paint preparation”.

As blast media the company is using corundum because it does not react with the substrate of the work pieces.

Large components are blasted manually in a blast room. “This allows optimally pre-treating hot-dipped steel, stainless steel and other nonferrous metals. The blast media is added to the compressed air in precise quantities. Broken down media and other contaminants are continuously discharged through a dust collector. Our operators are equipped with approved pressure breathing protection devices fed by cleaned air, and they are dressed in special protective clothing”, describes Marc Princen.

While GAM Coating still had sufficient capacity for powder coating jobs, rapidly increasing demand for wet painting required a capacity expansion. After careful evaluation of the pros and cons of an additional blast room vs. the purchase of a shot blast machine, the customer decided to go with the option of purchasing a new blast machine.

Spinner hanger blast machine: A highly productive and flexible work horse GAM Coating chose a spinner hanger blast machine from Rösler. These machines are ideal for de-scaling, de-rusting, paint stripping, surface texturing and de-sanding of large or heavy components, including complex steel fabrications. A special overhead rail system transports the components, hanging on special trusses, into the shot blast machine. The blast process takes place with the work pieces moving in the blast chamber continuously or indexing.

The overhead rail system is designed as an open “Y”. This allows to load/ unload work piece at two stations so that unproductive times are kept at a minimum. A special feature of the Rösler shot blast machine is its excellent wear protection: The blast chamber consists of 8 mm thick welded manganese steel. In addition, the blast area is specially protected by easily exchangeable 10 mm wear plates, also made from manganese steel.

The blast chamber with a height of 2,700 mm and a width of 2,200 mm allows the fully automatic shot blasting of components with max. dimensions of 2,000 by 2,000 mm,

such as shelves, machinery components, door frames and tables.

Such components represent about 75 % of the component range handled

by GAM Coating. “Programming of the Rösler machine is very simple, as we only have to set the blast time and turbine RPM”, adds Marc Princen.

Besides its high productivity the shot blast machine is also characterised by its high energy efficiency. In this respect the Gamma G turbines with “Y” shaped throwing blades play a key role. Compared to conventional turbines the special curved blade design in the Gamma G turbines produces a 20 % higher blast performance with a lower energy consumption. Marc Princen concludes: “Energy considerations definitely play an important role in today’s industrial environment. On the one hand lower energy consumption is good for the environment. On the other hand the price for energy is an important cost factor”.

Who are The Watch Atelier?

The key challenge for The Watch Atelier was the time each watch repair specialist spent cleaning.

Specialising in state-of-the-art timepiece servicing in the UK, The Watch Atelier, started life as Xupes Services.

Under the direction of Managing Director Megan Young, they rebranded and became independent in 2022 as The Watch Atelier, launching a new, large and technologically advanced servicing centre in the process.

Their skilled team carry out all facets of watch maintenance, from servicing, polishing and battery replacement, to restorations, valuations and part repairs.

What challenges did The Watch Atelier face?

The Watch Atelier grew significantly in the run-up to its rebranding, building a new workshop to keep up with increased servicing demands.

For smaller workshops or one-manband style servicing firms, the time spent cleaning watches and watch componentry is generally low. For smaller companies like these, investing in dedicated, automated cleaning solutions is both challenging and ill-advised, as cleaning time is minimal.

However, for larger workshops, or those expanding rapidly, cleaning time increases sharply, so investing in high-end, dedicated cleaning solutions makes sense. As Megan Young explained, “a large machine like the Pro-Line is part of a business plan to aid with expansion.”

Whilst scaling up, Megan explained that the company examined the time spent between manual vs automated machine cleaning. When cleaning manually, watchmakers spend around 20 minutes moving watches from basket to basket in what can be quite an involved and uncomfortable process: - First, a pre-clean takes place using heat, vibration and cleaning chemicals.

After polishing, residue remains in the cracks and the tubes of the watch, so removing this can be challenging.

- A series of baths remove most dirt and contamination, with each subsequent bath increasing cleanliness.

- Following the baths, steam cleaning helps reach the areas the manual baths were unable to reach.

- Finally, a cleaning bath with distilled water closes the process to remove watermarks. A heating plate dries the watch.

With cleaning increasing per watchmaker, Megan had to make a decision between hiring dedicated cleaning staff, or investing in an automated solution to lessen cleaning time across the board.

Eventually, The Watch Atelier settled on a machine investment avoiding the cost and motivation issues when employing a person to clean all day, every day.

Choosing the Elma Pro-Line With limited space in the cleaning room of the workshop and futureproofing in mind, The Watch Atelier needed to make an important choice for their cleaning setup.

If they didn’t purchase the Pro-Line, The Watch Atelier would have had to invest in new setup of manual tanks integrated into kitchen units.

This would cost thousands of pounds and didn’t necessarily fit into their plans to grow and develop.

Megan explained that “we decided to go all-in, avoid the temporary solution and instead choose an automated solution that will last for years. The entire new workshop was designed with futureproofing in mind and room to grow. The Elma was a part of this.”

Cleaning is a critical step to ensure quality metal surface finishing for downstream processes like electroplating, powder coating, and anodizing. Any contaminants remaining on parts can lead to defects, performance issues, and finishing process failures. However, implementing the optimal cleaning process requires careful planning and the evaluation of many factors.

1. What Surface Contaminants Are Present?

The first step in the cleaning process is to identify any potential surface contaminants. Metal parts can be affected by various substances, including oily residues left by machining lubricants and coolants.

Forming operations can introduce drawing compounds, stamping oils, and die lubricants, which can spread across surfaces. Even microscopic metal fines have the potential to affect subsequent finishing.

Additionally, handling can introduce contaminants such as oxides, corrosion films, fingerprints, dust, polishing compounds, and marking inks, all of which accumulate over time.

It is critical to thoroughly remove all these contaminants, especially from difficult to reach areas where soils collect like, blind holes, deep recesses, enclosed chambers, and joints.

Any contaminant left behind will compromise subsequent finishing quality.

Polar inorganic contaminants like metal oxides, smuts, salts, heat treat scale, and corrosion are best cleaned

using aqueous machines and waterbased detergents and surfactants.

This process effectively wets the surface and reacts with inorganic soils to solubilise ionic contaminants for complete rinsing.

Non-polar organic contaminants including, oils, greases, drawing compounds, and hydrocarbon soils, are most effectively removed using a vapour degreaser and specialty solvent-based fluids. The polar organics in the cleaning fluid dissolve and detach these non-polar soils from the metal surface.

Particulate soils, such as metal shavings, dust, and polishing pastes, are insoluble in water and solvents.

Consequently, dissolving them is not possible, therefore, they must be displaced. This occurs when the cleaning fluid penetrates beneath the contaminants, disrupting any static bonds that anchor them in place.

Both aqueous and solvent-based processes can be employed for effective particulate cleaning.

It is important to thoroughly remove all these contaminants using the optimal cleaning method for the soil type present. Testing cleaning processes on parts directly from

production is essential to validate complete contaminant removal.

2. Which Cleaning Fluid Works Best?

Once potential contaminants are identified, the next question is: which cleaning fluid will most effectively remove the contaminant without leaving any residue? Three main options are used within vapour degreasing which are highly effective at cleaning surfaces: mono-solvent, co-solvent, and bi-solvent cleaning fluids.

Mono-solvent cleaning uses a single high-boiling, strong solvent inside a two-sump vapour degreaser to clean, rinse, and dry parts. This efficiently removes oils, lubricants, metal shavings and organic contaminants.

Some mono-solvents are azeotropes, a cleaning fluid composed of two or more components that, when combined, form a stable mixture.

This not only enhances cleaning performance but also improves safety.

Co-solvent cleaning combines two solvents - one dissolves difficult contaminants, while the other rinses at a lower temperature to amplify cleaning power. The high-boiling solvating agent effectively removes stubborn, difficult-to-clean contaminants including synthetic greases, grinding media, and polishing compounds.

Bi-solvent cleaning involves using a two-sump vapour degreaser and a separate initial cleaning tank.

Detect Hairline Cracks In Bearings For Medical Devices Identification of Hairline Cracks in Plain Bearings The components of medical devices are subject to very stringent safety and quality requirements. An example is the slide bearings used in up-market X-ray equipment: The flawless functioning of these bearings depends on, among other things, the quality of their surfaces. All defects in those surfaces, even the finest hairline cracks, must be ruled out – a major challenge for the inspection metrology employed.

However, measuring the electrical conductivity of the material provides a simple and quick way to detect even tiny fissures, as this method is very sensitive to structural inconsistencies.

Conclusion of the Detection of Hairline Cracks in Bearings for Medical Devices FISCHER’s mobile handheld instrument SIGMASCOPE® SMP350, used together with the probe FS40, non-destructively measures the electrical conductivity of non-ferrous metals extremely quickly and precisely using the phase-sensitive eddy current method, which produces exactly the right conditions required for crack detection.

To check a surface for cracks, the probe FS40 is passed over the surface of the sample in free-running mode.

Eddy currents are formed in the material, which are in turn recorded by the probe and converted to a signal in the instrument. In the case of the bearings we examined as a test, the conductivity measured was in the range of 18.3 MS/m, with very low variation. Any hairline cracks in the material will hinder the spread of the eddy currents – even the very finest, optically invisible faults. In practice, when the tested bearings showed a value of e.g. 14 MS/m, that would clearly indicate that a crack had been found by means of electrical conductivity.

Application of the FS40 Probe on the Plain Bearings Measurement of Electrical Conductivity for the Detection of Fine Cracks Bearings, such as those used for holding and smoothly moving the X-ray tubes in medical devices, are actually gliding on a thin film of liquid.

If the surfaces have any damage, such

as the thin fractures that can occur during the machining of the components, the sliding properties cannot be ensured for the device’s entire service lifetime. Technically, such cracks near the surface are difficult to detect, as optical inspection methods very quickly reach their limits with fine hairline cracks.

The probe FS40 has a range of measurement frequencies (60-480 kHz), making it suitable for different material thicknesses. Using a lower measurement frequency results in the eddy current field penetrating deeper into the sample material.

Detection of Hairline Cracks with the Electrical Conductivity Method For the detection of fine hairline cracks in slide bearings produced for use in medical X-ray equipment, measuring the electrical conductivity – as implemented in the SIGMASCOPE® SMP350 from FISCHER – is an excellent solution. And between the two probes FS40 and FS24, a wide variety of part geometries can be accommodated flexibly, completing the ideal system for this purpose.

New Anti-Soil , Anti-Reflection hydrophilic coating – optimising solar panel performance by 7% Following a turbulent twelve months in the UK’s energy markets, the installed solar capacity is over 14.4 gigawatt (GW) and growing. While new installations are critical in continuing the transition to non-fossil fuels, maximising the efficiency of existing installations, is of equal if not more importance, as the vast majority were installed during the ‘feed-in tariff’ boom up to April 2019.

Cleaning is important for solar installations; it is well documented that depending on the location, energy losses on panels from soiling can be upwards of 7%, and in particularly harsh environments, such as the Middle East, up to 50%. While the average losses in the UK will be at the lower end of the scale, any loss of energy transmission efficiency is a loss in revenue.

While maintaining efficiency can be achieved through cleaning, maximising the efficiency of installations against soiling can be achieved using Solar (PV) PanelGuard from Nano-Care, a single application nano-coating.

Solar (PV) PanelGuard is a silica-based nano-coating, which has an extremely durable hydrophilic performance to repel environmental dirt and pollution. The coatings’ built-in AR (anti-reflection) performance leads to increased light transmission to the panels of up to 2.5% by reducing the amount of light lost on untreated glass, which has been demonstrated to be up to 4% of the light hitting the panel at right-angles. Combined with the reduction in contamination, this will typically lead to an overall increase in energy yield of 6-7% - which allows an amortisation of the investment between 6 months and 3 years (depending on the electricity price in any regional market).

The results of an onsite trial carried out on a 146 kWp solar field with 289 modules during 2022 in KwaZulu, Natal South Africa, demonstrates these gains.

The longer-term energy sapping issue is ‘cementation’, where panels that are left ‘dusty’ for long periods, combined with regular light dews, cause the dust to become hardened on the panel and difficult to remove without abrasion (which can damage the solar cells). This can be avoided by using this hydrophilic coating which minimises losses from decreased light absorption.

The benefits of the hydrophilic non-stick nature of the coating outperform previously favoured hydrophobic coatings - which have required rainfall heavy enough to move the dust in order to be effective , and are of limited use on panels that are not at a steep enough angle for the water or dew to run-off easily.
