Acer saccharinum Conservation Status: Least Concern
A medium to large tree that grows up to 35 meters tall. Sharply forked form; widely spaced branches; and large, often exposed roots. Bark is thin and flat with a scruffy, “unshaven look.” Leaves are 6 to 8 inches long, with prominent, pointed, coarse-toothed lobes and narrow, rounded sinuses. The bottom is a silvery color. Redistributes soil water in a process called hydraulic lift. Draws water from lower soil layers to upper, drier layers. Benefits the tree and other plants around it. Sometimes, the trunks are hollow, creating a space for animals and birds to live in. Indigenous peoples use Silver Maple sap to make sugar, as medicine, and in bread. Wood used to make baskets and furniture.
