Joy is found at HSC. From the moment a student walks onto campus, the journey begins. Starting as early as 18 months in the Junior and Montessori Schools, students drive their desire to learn through inquiry and imagination.

Middle School students discover who they are, and what their interests are, in a positive and supportive environment. In the Senior School, students expand their horizons and take ownership of the educational pathways leading them into bright futures. The graduate who emerges from HSC is inspired with the skills needed to live, and lead, with purpose.

A Whole School Connected The 2016–17 school year was a very successful one, by all accounts, as you will see in this Annual Report. We had a very strong year from an enrolment perspective with our highest-ever enrolment College-wide: a student population of 1,192 and more than triple the donations to the College compared with 2015–16.

We continued to make excellent progress in year three of implementation of our strategic plan, Towards 20/20, and I encourage you to visit the Strategy@ HSC part of our website for regular updates.

One of the major initiatives that we began this year in

support of Towards 20/20 was our unifying theme of Whole School Connected.

As one of the largest independent schools in the country, with four schools in one College, it can be a challenge for us to connect with one another internally, let alone with our 800plus sets of parents and guardians and more than 3,000 active alumni. Whole School Connected is a massive effort to leverage technology to help us all feel even more in tune with the amazing things that are happening daily at HSC. Whether it is more cross-college professional development, our new learning management system, MyHSC, or our

Planning for Success newly revamped website, we are trying hard to make ourselves “Stronger Together.”

I hope that you will get a great sense of all these efforts as you read this report.

We would like to thank all of our many donors and volunteers for all that they do to keep HSC on the very leading edge of independent schools in Canada.

The 2016–17 school year was another incredible one, filled with successes in all areas of the College. The area of major focus continued to be the monitoring of the implementation of year three of the College’s Strategic Plan, Towards 20/20.

Across all eight directions, the plan continues to be embraced. Synergies between the directions are emerging that are greater than anticipated.

(PBL). As an example, one of the most unique PBL projects was the introduction of Designwerx, the first student-run design and advertising company in Canada. Through the generosity of the David Tutty Joy and Innovation Fund, and the leadership of Mr. Timms and Ms. Faggion, eight senior students had the real-life experience of running a business with real clients, producing real work of amazing quality.

This is but one example of how the Strategic Plan is On the academic front, one a living document at HSC, of the exciting initiatives and the Board reaffirms in our efforts to make the its commitment to a learning environment more very public and frequent authentic and skills-oriented communication of our was a pilot program in progress. This plan and Project-Based Learning

alumni association 2017 HSC GOLF CLASSIC The rain didn’t dampen the spirits of the golfers who came out to support HSC scholarships during the 21st annual HSC Golf Classic on June 27, 2017.

The event sold out early. A total of 142 golfers enjoyed a variety of tournament experiences and raised over $38,000 for student awards and scholarships. Thank you to our sponsors and golfers for their continued support.

The 22nd annual HSC Golf Classic will take place on Tuesday, June 26, 2018 at the Dundas Valley Golf and Curling Club. For more information, or to register, please visit hsc.on.ca/ golf2018.

YOUNG ALUMNI BREAK RECORDS

IN THE SPIRIT OF PURPLE AND GREEN

After Carol Service on December 22, 2016, two reunions were held: the Hamilton Area Reunion at the Tamahaac Club and the Young Alumni Pub Night at Coach and Lantern.

Homecoming 2017 kicked off with high levels of contagious energy and inspiring creativity at the Showcase of the Arts and annual pep rally on May 12, 2017. The following day, the HSC community enjoyed a pancake breakfast, art displays, athletic games, food trucks, Hektor’s Home Run and more. On Saturday evening, May 13, the College hosted the Alumni Reunion Dinner and Athletic Hall of Fame Awards.

Clare Hargreave Peddle ’92, Dr. Philip Vayalumkal ’99, Coach Mark Hudson, Judith King-Siganski ’62, William D. Graham ’51 and the 1984–85 1st Boys’ Basketball Team were the 2017 inductees.

Many alumni and retired faculty reconnected at the Tamahaac Club and shared in the spirit of the season.

More than 150 young alumni filled the Coach and Lantern in the largest reunion to date.

In March 2017, the Alumni Office and faculty went on a road show, reconnecting with alumni in Guelph, Waterloo, London and Kingston.

MARVELLOUS MONDAY

GROWING FOR GOOD

On Friday, October 28, hundreds of students, parents, faculty, staff and friends joined the HSC Parents’ Guild for a fangtastic good time at Monster Mash. The gyms were filled with every kind of costume, including princesses, Star Wars, a peanut butter and jam sandwich, and a spicy mustard bottle. Every “monster” enjoyed pizza, goodie bags and terror-ific activities such as science experiments, crafts, spider webs friends to the floor, temporary tattoos, and a dance party and much more. The entire evening raised more than $6,000 for the PG and was an incredible way to celebrate Halloween among HSC friends.

Some Mondays are better than others. A particularly good one for HSC staff was the kickoff to the College’s annual Wellness Week on Monday, February 13, 2017, when they were treated to a special Staff Appreciation Breakfast courtesy of the HSC Parents’ Guild.

PG volunteers warmly welcomed staff and served the staff a healthy and delicious breakfast that kicked off everyone’s day on a happy note. The breakfast is an initiative of the Parents’ Guild, who recognized the time and energy faculty and staff dedicate to making our College an amazing place for students.

Used uniform donations are a popular way through which HSC families give back to the College community. The Parents’ Guild accepts these donations and sells them to other HSC families at a reduced price. The proceeds of the uniform sales go back into the learning environment at the College. Used uniform sales have been so popular in the past that a permanent space was dedicated to them in the Campus Store.

During the 2016–17 school year, the PG raised more than $20,000 by recycling uniforms amongst the HSC community.

a year of firsts, friendship and fun

In 2016–17 we worked to bring a close-knit community even closer.

More than 1,180 students, 200-plus employees, more than 800 current families, and four generations of alumni celebrated championship titles, welcomed our early education students into our prized house system, thanked our donors at special events, and connected with HSC in other ways.

Our community is vibrant and thriving, and over the past year we are grateful to our supporters and families for making this our reality.

ONE CLUB, TWO BANNERS

The Senior Cross Country team had an incredible 2016 season. On October 26 they raced to first place overall, to tie with De La Salle College and smash records at the College.

The Junior Girls’ team placed first in their division, earning gold and a coveted CISAA plaque. Their remarkable performance qualified all six team members for the OFSAA Championship alongside Senior Team racer Georgia Cross-Bermingham. The Junior Boys finished third overall and qualified two athletes for OFSAA. The Senior Boys finished fourth in an extremely competitive race that they described as their best race of the season.

The U13 boys’ basketball team was crowned CAIS National Champions for the second year in a row on February 4, 2017. Sixteen schools from across the country visited our campus for the prestigious tournament.

In 2017, the rugby program’s theme was to play as one club—and what a force that one club was.

The team in purple went three for three on day one, clinching a semifinal spot. The semifinal match against Crescent School was a nail-biter from the beginning, but HSC moved on to the final against evenly matched Upper Canada College. With only two minutes left, Quinn Levinson knocked a layup off the backboard and Liam Harper-McCabe sunk two free throws to wrap things up 46-40 in HSC’s favour.

The undefeated girls’ team was quickly crowned champions in a tournament where they scored 85 points in total through 15 tries and five converts.

The senior boys’ team won two shutout games to kick off their CISAA championship final at Lakefield College School.

Heading into the final match against the home team, HSC had a +37 point differential, which meant LCS had to defeat HSC by 13 or more points. HSC held the score to 17-12 in LCS’s favour, and the Trojans claimed the CISAA banner.

ARTSFEST GROWS

The Senior School crafted another energetic and uplifting show with its December production of Legally Blonde. Elle Woods (Jenna Eyram ‘17) was a sorority girl who follows exboyfriend Warner (Santiago Gutierrez ‘17) to law school.

Despite having to work her way up from the bottom of the class, Elle proved that “believing in yourself never goes out of style!”

The sights, sounds and tastes of southern Louisiana came to life on January 26, 2017.

Engaging, joyful and inspiring—the arts come alive at HSC. Artists of all ages transformed our hallways and gathering spaces into a gallery of visual art on Friday, May 13, 2017 at ArtsFest. Due to the abundance of talent, our visual arts display expanded in 2017. Not only was the Learning Commons filled with creative drawings and paintings, but the creativity spilled into the Athletic Complex as well, where installations, masks and more could be found. Staff and students also made fresh art by contributing to the HSC Community Art Collage that was set up in the Athletic Complex.

The Middle School followed in March by selling out an amazing performance of Shrek the Musical Jr. Shrek (Devan Constantin) led a cast of fairytale misfits on an adventure to rescue a princess and find true acceptance.

The HSC jazz musicians hosted Mardi Gras in Lawson Hall to add some heat to the early days of 2018. Guests were treated to delicious southern cuisine from Hamilton’s Mississippi Queen Foods.

The night’s entertainment included jazz musicians from the Senior and Middle Schools and a special guest appearance by Red Hot Ramble.

RELAY FOR LIFE AT HSC

On January 20, 2017, HSC hosted its sixth annual World Issues Conference and the first mini “We Day”.

More than 300 delegates from seven Middle Schools in the area attended.

The College’s partnership with Adelaide Hoodless School grew deeper in 2016–17. While clothing drives, holiday gift-giving were part of the College’s initiatives, the highlight was the overwhelming success of the Collegewide Colours Day. With a $10,000 donation from the Clanachan family, the College raised more than $31,000 and sent 40 students from Adelaide Hoodless to a Tim Horton’s Leadership Camp.

On Friday, June 2, 2017, the entire College took part in Relay for Life in support of the Canadian Cancer Foundation. The College set a fundraising goal of $50,000 and surpassed it, raising $58,000 for cancer research and initiatives.

WIC was created to inform and inspire youth to effect change. The 2017 keynote speaker was 18-year-old Mitch Kurylowicz, who founded Project Jenga to support secondary school education in rural Kenya.

Singer and songwriter Liz Loughrey ’13 wowed the crowd with her single Rise Up. She encouraged the audience to join the #RiseUpMovement by sharing their passion for making a difference in their communities.

As a result of their camp experience, Adelaide Hoodless planned a Soupfest fundraiser, which sold out and raised $2,000 plus to send one of their special education students to camp last summer.

Walking arm in arm, HSC’s cancer survivors started the event. Students from the early education schools all the way up to Senior School walked around the back fields to support research, influence change and empower all participants.

Luminary bags were placed around the track to provide inspiration during the walk.

celebration of philanthropy HONOURING OUR DONORS On Thursday, November 17, 2016, the HSC community celebrated the College’s generous donors. The event was an opportunity for the College to demonstrate how contributions from donors make a difference in our community.

The first installations of the Legacy Way paving stones were unveiled.

Donors made a special and permanent mark at the College with an engraved stone paver that was

integrated into the covered walkway at the front of the College.

Student-run Designwerx was also showcased.

A David Tutty Joy and Innovation Fund initiative, Designwerx is a fullservice graphic design studio run by HSC students on the lower level of the Strathallan Building. The student team creates logos, brands, advertising campaigns, promotional videos and more.

A special video was also played. The video showed clips of the College’s predecessors Highfield, Strathallan and Hillfield Schools and their students.

It gave a glimpse of the rich history of Hillfield Strathallan College and thanked donors for helping transform the College into what it is today.

unveiling the donor wall WALLS OF GRATITUDE On April 25, 2017, a beautiful new permanent sign was installed in the Kemper Family Lounge to thank the donors of Hillfield Strathallan College. It is thanks to generations of generous donors that HSC is a leader in independent education.

The donors who are listed behind the glass surface of the beautiful Donor Wall installation have made significant contributions to enhance the College.

Their extraordinary trust and commitment has helped, and continues to help, enrich the educational journey of each and every HSC student.

On the first panel of the installation, the artwork thanks Mr. Michael G. DeGroote Hon. ’09 for his gift to the Transformation HSC capital campaign. His donation was the largest single gift ever made to an independent school in Canada. The subsequent panels honour those who have made gifts from $25,000 to $10,000,000+.

Every gift to HSC is an investment in the potential of our students. We are truly grateful for the financial support of our alumni, parents, faculty, staff, volunteers and friends.

The event also included a dedication to Colin G. Lazier ’67. A sitting area was installed on the soccer fields with a commemorative plaque from his wife Barbara ’67 and children Amy ’93, Kate ’95, Colin ’97 and William ’00. The Business and Social Sciences classroom in the Michael G. DeGroote Senior School was also dedicated in memory of Mr. Lazier.

Fiscal 2016 was a strong year for HSC, with an increase in both enrolment and our financial stability.

Once again, HSC was able to pay down a significant amount of its long-term debt, due to the continued pledge payments of Transformation HSC donors. This reduced the debt associated with Transformation HSC to just over $4.72 million. We ended the year with all College funds at healthy levels.
