ANDREA TKACZYK SCHOLARSHIP

2024 DONOR REPORT

A special report prepared for:

THE PAIKIN FAMILY & FRIENDS Spring 2024

THANK YOU

Dear Paikin family and friends,

With the end of a great academic year fast approaching at HSC, we have begun the process of selecting another bright young graduate to receive the Andrea Tkaczyk Scholarship. This will be the third handed out since its inception and we are so grateful for your continued generosity. Born out of the spirit and passions of Andrea, this scholarship is incredibly meaningful to both those who receive it and the College as a whole.

As you know so well, a pillar of an HSC education is engagement in the wider community and an understanding of issues beyond the College. Written into the criteria for the Andrea Tkaczyk Scholarship is that the recipient has a proven understanding of the importance of supporting their community by giving back. The past recipients Fola Ayibiowu and Makenzie Schell showcase their compassion and desire to help those in need through an interest in the medical world and through volunteer involvement in service groups and charitable organizations.

Andrea’s optimism, kindness and selflessness continue to resonate through this scholarship and the students who share her values and aspirations. Like Andrea did before them, Fola and Makenzie are pursuing careers in healthcare. In their commitment to helping those in need, whether through nursing or medical research to advance treatments for underserved community members, they are contributing to a better world. It is through your generosity that we can continue to nurture future leaders in healthcare who will carry forward Andrea’s legacy of compassion and service.

A gift like yours not only validates the recipients’ success as HSC students, but bolsters their confidence and financial readiness as they set out into post-secondary life. By honouring Andrea’s legacy with this fund, we can continue to make a profound impact on the lives of students aspiring to follow in her footsteps. Thank you for instilling hope and inspiration in our students. Your support is deeply appreciated by everyone involved.

Our sincerest gratitude,

AN UPDATE ON THE SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS

RECIPIENTS OF THE ANDREA TKACZYK SCHOLARSHIP

Folayemi Ayibiowu ’22

Folayemi Ayibiowu has completed her second-year as a Medical Student at University College Dublin in Ireland. Her passion for Human Rights activism, clinical research and regenerative medicine fuels her work as a research student. Folayemi began her research experience at the Hospital for Sick Children, performing laboratory experiments and investigations into phagocytosis, kidney health and cell biology. She currently works as a Student Volunteer at University Health Network with Dr. Mucsi’s KHE-ACB and CARM laboratories, while also volunteering in the SickKids Rheumatology research lab. Through working with CARM and KHE-ACB, Folayemi hopes to educate others, especially black youth, about regenerative medicine and clinical research.

“For years I’ve had a passion for human rights and known that no matter what I pursued in the future, I wanted to help make sure that everyone had access to the help they needed. Medicine gives me the chance to help people and learn about the subjects that interest me like biology, physiology, psychology and anatomy. In the future, regardless of what I specialize in, whatever I do will always be with the goal of helping others, specifically those in marginalized communities, in mind.”

Makenzie Schell ’23

Makenzie Schell has completed her first year in the Nursing program at Brock University. She graduated from HSC as an honour pin student and was named to the Ontario Scholars. During her time at HSC she was an active member of the WeeBraveheart group and dedicated many after class hours to preparing and packaging care boxes for cancer patients in the Hamilton community. Her chosen quote for graduation, borrowed from Minor Myers Jr., reflects her commitment to serving others:

“Go into the world and do well. But more importantly, go into the world and do good.”

THANK YOU

Thank you so much for your consideration of an impactful gift to our school. Of course, we are willing to discuss other project options that may be of special interest to you and your family. It is important to us that your gift is meaningful to you and we are delighted to assist you in facilitating this.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us. Thank you again for your support.
