Dear reader, Welcome to our viewer's guide to Inside Out. We are the AP Psychology students of Making Waves Academy, 2021-2022. Most of us had already seen this movie before this school year, but over the course of the year we grew in our understanding of the brain and psychology. Thanks to our hard work all year long, we are now able to explain to you the many neuroscientific concepts that appear in Inside Out. This year, we learned about parts of the brain and their different jobs. We learned how memories are formed and what happens when they are forgotten. We explored different theories of how emotions are experienced and expressed. We studied dreams, consciousness, creativity, and how the brain produces each. We discussed questions of biological, psychological, and social development and how people change as they grow up. We also put our own ideas about personality to the test and asked questions about gender, culture, and other factors that make us who we are. Now that we are wrapping up this school year, we are finding that all of these topics help us understand this film and give us a new perspective on Riley's emotional journey in it.

After watching Inside Out together as a class, we began our research. We revisited important concepts from class and searched for information on how the filmmakers made their decisions. Working in groups, we shared our ideas with each other and dug deeper into our own questions. This guide is the result of our research. We hope that the next time you watch Inside Out, you let us guide you to a deeper understanding of the science behind it.
