IcouldnothaveimaginedwhatlayaheadasIsteppedintothebiggestandmostfabulous shoesofmymentorandfriend,SueKurtz,lastfall.The2023-2024schoolyearbrought challenges,tragedy,andstrengthbeyondwhatIthoughtpossible.AftersendingoffSueand JeffinstyleatanincredibleMilestoneCelebrationWeekend,wedoveintotheHighHolidays, celebratingfallandfootballseasoninBlacksburg.Imetsomanyincrediblestudentleaders, onboardedthreenewstaffmembers,anddoveheadfirstintothebusynessoftheyearwith mytwotoddlersintow
OnOctober7th,ourworldstopped TheJewishpeople’sheartsbrokeacrosstheglobeaswe criedandprayedforourIsraelifamily Studentsandstaffwhosefamiliesweredirectly impactedpouredintoHillelinshock,seekingsafety,wordsofcomfort,ashouldertoleanon, andacommunitytoholdthem.Weorganizedacampus-widevigil,PresidentSandslitup BurrusHallblueandwhite,andwecried,prayed,andsangHatikvah,ourhope.Many studentsfeltaloneandisolatedfromtheirpeersbecausetheirworldhadturnedupside-down overnightwhiletheirclassmateswentabouttheirlives duedatesstillexisted,examswere stillhappening;howcouldthisbe?
Weorganizedawalkinsolidaritywiththehostages,bringingtogetherHillel,Chabad,and theJewishStudentUnion.WeorganizedabusofstudentsonaUniversitychartertotravelto DCtomarch300,000strong.Westood,arminarm,withtheparentsofhostagesheld captivebyHamas.
Wecontinuedtofindreasonstocelebratetogether.Wefilledourbuildingwithstringlights, mocktails,andhors-d'oeuvresandcelebratedtheJewishpeople’sabilitytobringlightatthe darkesttimeoftheyearwithourfirstHanukkahformal.TheMaccabeestoryneverfeltmore relevanttoourtimes.
Thespringsemesterbroughtnewchallenges,withthedepartureofourassistantdirectorand ourIsraelFellowreturningtoservehisunitinGaza,weweredowntothreefull-timestaff members Anti-Israelstudentprotestsintensifiedonourcampus,studentsinthe UndergraduateStudentSenate(USS)cameforwardwithhatefulandinaccuratedemandsof theUniversity,callingonVirginiaTechtoboycottIsrael,placetheblameofsufferingentirelyon theonlyJewishState,anddenytheatrocitiesofHamas.
Iwasflooredbythearticulate,resilient,andstrongJewishHokieswhostoodupandspoke theirtruths.Whileinsultsandslurswerethrownatthem,theyremainedempatheticand nuanced.TheyremindedtheSenatethattheirroleistorepresentallstudentsoncampus, includingJewishstudents,andthetruthisthattherehasbeena700%increasein Antisemitismoncampusesacrossthecountry.Studentstodayliveinaworldofsocialmedia, sothestoriesandexperiencesofJewishstudentsacrossthecountryfeltlikeourown.
Despitetherisingtideoffearandhate,Hillelstoodstrong,secure,andcommittedtoour values.Beforeyoureadaboutourincredibleachievementsthisyear,Iwanttothankyoufor makingitallpossible.Wecannotcontinuethisworkwithoutsupporterslikeyou.

AsIconcludemytenureasBoardChair,Ireflectonaperiodshaped bysignificanttransitionandresilience.InAugustoflastyear,we celebratedSueKurtz’sremarkable22yearsofleadershipand welcomedAmandaHerringasournewExecutiveDirector.Amanda, whoservedasHillelatVTstudentpresidentduringher undergraduateyears,hasbeenanactiveleaderintheDCregion Jewishcommunityforthepastdecade.HerreturntoBlacksburg bringsarenewedvisionanddedicationtoourHillel.HillelatVirginia TechisanindispensableresourceforJewishstudentsoncampus andthroughoutsouthwestVirginia.Intimesofturbulenceand uncertainty,especiallywiththealarmingriseinantisemitismover thepasttenmonths,Hillelhasbeenarockforourcommunity. October7andtheensuingnationwidecampusprotestswere watershedmomentsfeltdeeplybyJewishstudentseverywhere, includingthoseweserveatVirginiaTech.Ourstrengthliesinunity andmutualsupport.Itisthroughthecommitmentandcontributions ofourcommunity students,parents,alumni,friends,theBoardsof DirectorsandGovernors,full-timeHillelatVTleadershipandstaff, andHillelInternational thatwecontinuetoserveandgrow,from strengthtostrength.

IACTCoordinator,SashaStadnik,taughtaclassonIsraellast Fall,pivotingandadapting changingpoliticallandsca shebrought7HokiesonB unlikeanytripbeforeit.St SouthernKibbutzwhotook singlehandedlysavinghis uncleofaJewishHokie.
OurED,AmandaHerring,hadthehonorofteachingShabbat HostingLabthisyear.Thiseventgaveourupperclassstudentsa chancetohoneandpracticetheirownShabbathostingskills. Thisfun,community-buildingcoursegavethemthetoolsthey needto“doJewish”ontheirownaftercollege.Students gainedtheknowledgeandconfidencetoleadJewishrituals, cookameal,andcreateanauthenticcommunityoftheirown. Attheendoftheclass,everyoneagreedthatattheendofthe day,Shabbatiswhatholdsustogether.

ThispastyearwasanincrediblydifficulttimetobeJewishonacollegecampus,andthere isnodenyingthat.Thedifficultyofthisyearhasshownusexactlywhyanorganizationlike Hillelissoimportant.
Thisyear,wecametogethertosupporteachother.Weheldvigils,offeredasafeplaceto escapetheoutsideworld,andhelpedturnpainandsadnessintoactivism.Wefacilitated dialoguewithofficials,includingVirginiaTechPresidentTimSandsandVirginiaGovernor GlennYoungkin.Ourfocusfortheseconversationswastoaddressandfightantisemitism sothegeneralJewishstudentbodydidnothaveto Theimpactwehavebeenableto makeonJewishstudentswasmoreclearthanever,andIhopethateverydonor,parent, staffmember,andstudentleaderinvolvedwithHillelatVirginiaTechisasproudasIam tohavebeenapartofit.
