OVERVIEW WEEK 7/8

Welcome back to Coolangatta Rise Programme! As we near the end of this term, I'm pleased to highlight the enriching experiences of weeks 7 and 8. Our program aims to foster adaptable and resilient students, exemplified by our recent response to rain-induced flooding on the city side of our Rise building. We extend our gratitude to Southern Cross University for their support, enabling us to continue our academic pursuits in alternative spaces.

Students delved into various assessments across subjects, including a History exam probing settlers' attitudes towards Indigenous peoples. In Physical Education, they showcased volleyball skills over three weeks, while Mathematics saw them undertaking a final design project covering trigonometry, calculus, and Pythagoras theorem. Additionally, students progressed through Science project milestones, conducting experiments and drafting reports, and honed their feature writing skills in English through interviews, enhancing their ability to craft compelling human-interest articles.

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY

Many of us RISE students interact with our teachers daily, but there is one member of staff that is recognised much less Miss Farida Dunford, our fun-loving receptionist, has taken on the Marketing Friday elective alongside Ms O’Gorman

To celebrate International Women’s Day on the 8th of March, we interviewed Miss Farida and Ms O’Gorman to get to know more about both of their views on the day and some other questions too

So let’s get started!!!

What are your views on International Women’s Day?

I think it’s a good opportunity to highlight the women in your life without exclaiming that women are better than men.

What are your views on how women were treated in the past?

Terribly, but it is nice to see that we are now being recognised for our skills and talents.

Are you happy about the current changes to gender inequality since the 20th century?

We’re progressing depending on the industry and place you live I definitely feel blessed to be living in Australia, but worldwide isn’t as good

MISS FA R I AD

/ 05

What would you want to say to inspire teen girls?

If you have any dream, go for it. I was told I had to be a certain thing due to my culture, but I instead went in the complete opposite direction which was the best thing that I ever decided to do. I also strongly believe in not letting other people make you feel inferior without your consent Know your worth!

Have you noticed changes in young girls compared to when you were their age?

Absolutley! Girls these days put a lot of pressure on themselves due to social media. It’s sad that it’s now an expectation that all girls should be the same I am honestly so grateful to be part of probbaly the last childhood generation to not have social media

What advice do you have for people as a whole?

Learn to know God’s love.

What do you think the world would be like today if we hadn’t recognised women?

I think it would be a very cold place. Women are naturally nurturing. I think it would be a very robotic world due to a completely masculine environment. You need both genders for a cohesive environment

Don’t let anyone make you feel inferior without your consent!

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY

MS KATIE O’GORMAN

Do you celebrate International Women’s Day & if so, why do you think that is important to celebrate?

I don’t normally celebrate and wasn’t very aware of it in previous years. This year I have chosen to celebrate by doing a fun run in Brisbane on the 10th of March in support I grew up in the UK and International Women’s Day correlates with Mothers Day over there, so it is celebrated as both. They aren’t the same thing, but they are celebrated together

What’s your viewpoint on International Women’s Day?

It’s important for not only women to celebrate it but everyone. We need to celebrate it with more purpose and we should be more explicated as to why it should be celebrated and what it’s for.

Is there something you would tell your daughters to make them feel more empowered as a young woman?

Definitely value yourself, know your worth. Women are always told they aren’t good enough and will be below men. Don’t be afraid of who you are. Don’t be afraid of being true to yourself. We are called a lot of different things because we are not men. It’s okay to be called crazy and hysterical but that’s what we are and it’s okay.

/ 07

What are some things that make you feel empowered as a woman?

I think that supporting other women and championing other women is really important. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve been doing more and when I was younger, I was told that when you support other women you become less yourself I think that as woman we need to start recognising other women strengths and using the skills that we have to lift other women up.

What makes you feel like a woman?

The fact I am, I guess Being a mother made me embrace my more feminine side and as women we are living in men’s worlds. Being an active mother has definitely made me feel more of a woman and being able to do that role.

Favourite thing to do that is defined as girly?

I am a bit stereotypical like making a home, pink things and flowers, but I also think it’s good to do things like to break the mold and do things that go against that. Go do sport and do things that aren’t deemed as girly.

Did you have any main women in your life that you feel really influenced you as a young girl?

My mum definitely inspired me when I was younger. She was so selfless and giving and kind and warm and everything a mum should be, she was my biggest inspiration growing up. She gave me a safe place but gave me wings to fly. My Aunt too! She wasn’t a mum, so she was able to see more of a career driven type role and she was someone that was very strong and she empowered me to be more of who I am.

Don’t be afraid of who you are. Don’t be afraid of being true to yourself.

TERM1SRCELECTIVE

In year 9 students have been offered the opportunity to obtain their surf rescue certificate and gain essential life skills for ocean safety. Across the past 7 weeks over 40 rise students have taken part in the SRC future Friday, making this one of the most popular options.

“IHAVELEARNTALOTABOUT LEADERSHIPANDMYSELF”

This certificate equips students with first aid techniques, and safety initiatives to help themselves, and others in the water. This certificate not only provides students with physical skills but teaches students mental endurance and leadership skills SRC participant Will Thompson Gipp described the experience as challenging but a great opportunity for growth and leadership.

TERM1KOKODAELECTIVE

As part of the RISE Future Friday’s Electives, our Year 9 students are embarking on a weekly training schedule in preparation for the 30km Kokoda Challenge on the 13 July 2024.

The purpose of this challenge is to replicate an incredible journey that simulates the terrain and conditions faced by Australian soldiers during the Kokoda Track campaign in World War II It's not only a physical challenge but also a profound learning experience that fosters personal growth and character development As part of our Future Friday’s program, students will be hiking and walking around the local Coolangatta area.

A few of our Yr 9 Marketing boys decided to join in on the adventure last week and here’s what they had to say!

Fudou, Bernardo, and Jesse strolled along the picturesque beach walk of Coolangatta, each lost in their own thoughts as the salty breeze danced through their hair.

Fudou, with his rugged charm and easy smile, led the trio with a sense of adventure. He reveled in the sights and sounds of the coastline, his eyes drinking in the beauty of the azure sea meeting the golden sands.

Bernardo, the gentle soul of the group, walked beside Fudou, his camera in hand. He captured every moment, every vibrant hue of the sunset painting the sky in hues of pink and orange, determined to preserve the memories of their journey. / 11

Jesse, the quiet observer, followed behind, his sketchbook tucked under his arm. With skilled hands, he brought the scene to life on paper, capturing the essence of the beach walk with every stroke of his pencil.

As they wandered along the path, they shared stories and laughter, their friendship growing stronger with each passing moment. Together, they marveled at the beauty of Coolangatta, each finding solace in the tranquility of the ocean's embrace.

As their adventure ended, there was a warm glow over the landscape Fudou, Bernardo, and Jesse paused to take in the breathtaking view In that moment, as they stood together, surrounded by the beauty of nature, they realized that it wasn't just the scenery that made the beach walk so special—it was the bond they shared, forged by their love of adventure and their appreciation for the simple joys of life.

TERM1MARKETING ELECTIVE

On the 1st March during the future Friday electives, the marketing team was split in two, and were sent to multiple places that our future Fridays groups were currently occupying. My team was sent to SCU and Agape (a homeless shelter and op shop in Coolangatta) to see what they do on Fridays. Hopping on the Hillcrest mini-bus, we travelled to the Southern Cross University (SCU) campus, (Mrs O’Gorman was driving).

Once we arrived, we saw all the first year students having their first day at university. We were walking in and joined the Future Friday SCU campus tour, our first stop being Occupational Therapy. Walking around the classroom, it really showed how much people can learn just from looking and watching. The students experienced and tried the wheelchairs and yoga balls. As quick as we got there, we had to leave to get to Agape. Once at Agape, we got to look around to see the difference that a little bit of help can affect those in need.

ISSUE02/ FAREWELL WEEK 7/8

Week 7/8 is upon us, marking the final stretch of this journey we've embarked upon together. These last weeks have been stressful on us all, so congratulations to everyone for completing your assignments and exams, it is both a time for reflection and celebration. Throughout these past weeks, our cohort has had to remain focused in order to meet due dates while also maintaining flexible due to the unfortunate flooding of City-side. As the term comes to a close, on behalf of the Rise Marketing team, we would like to thank you all for taking the time to read
