Welcome to the Year 9 RISE Program!

We are so pleased to greet you on behalf of all RISE students as we begin Term 1 of the RISE Program 2024, also referred to as RP24. As we embark on yet another fascinating and enlightening trip together, we are ecstatic to have you along.

As members of the RISE Program, we will immerse ourselves in learning activities within The Strand Shopping Centre, where we are excited to develop a thorough awareness of the world around us, refine our abilities, and engage in the community of Coolangatta

Through community service projects and investigative journalism, we are actively participating in directing our educational path and leaving a lasting impact on the community.

We enthusiastically invite parents and adults to witness the RISE Program's dynamic learning environment through Connex with the help of our personal RISE Marketing team. The team consists of eager students ready to share the many adventures we participate in this year, in which we will flourish and excel through hands-on experiences and collaborative efforts. Together, we are shaping the future of our community while cultivating tomorrow's leaders.

RISE WEEK 5/6

OVERVIEW

This week RISE students have been planning their Humans of Cooly project. We are to find a local person in Cooly and interview them to write an article about them and their story. We then take a photograph of our person which will be displayed in an art gallery

We have also been participating in extra-curricular activities. These activities include sports on Thursday and as a class on Wednesday or Friday.

Another class that we do at Hillcrest are electives which happen on a Thursday morning and allow students to do something they are interested in such as art or dance

It’s currently Week 6 at RISE, and our Mathematics project is well underway.

In the first few weeks of school, we visited the Coolangatta Skate Park to take measurements and photos of the ramps and rails. We are now using those measurements to create a safer, more engaging environment for the community, including calculations of volume and costs of renovation.

Since then, we have had various lessons, including revision on area, perimeter, and surface area, we have extended our basic understanding of techniques and principles such as Pythagoras’ Theorem, and we have delved deeper than ever before into the world of Trigonometry

These past few weeks have been a whole new experience: We have been learning both in the classroom, and outside. In one of our many exciting outdoor lessons, we estimated the height of trees, then used various mathematical methods to check our accuracy.

We looked at the importance of trigonometry in real-life scenarios, and it has been a fun journey of learning since the first week.

After such a new, amazing experience, I am looking forward to the continuation of this term, and the new learning opportunities this year.

VS THE NFL

An opinion Piece by Lexi Johnston - RISE Student

Taylor Swift is ruining the NFL!” This statement has crept its way into our lives since the global icon Taylor Swift began publicly dating NFL star Travis Kelce. Not only is this overdramatic and absurd, but it is highly untrue

No one blinks an eye when common stars like Braxton Berrios, Mark Sanchez, and Miles Austin’s partners come to watch a game, but as soon as a publicly successful woman attends the match to support her boyfriend, she is “ruining” the beloved sport.

Swifties all over the world welcomed Travis with open arms when he came to watch Taylor perform the iconic Eras Tour. It was a safe space, and he was clearly able to enjoy himself without judgement. You would assume that it would work the same way if the roles were reversed, but Taylor was instantly criticized by her every slight movement as soon as she arrived to cheer her partner on.

As she began to attend more games, the NFL fans began a movement of hate towards Taylor. It got to the painful point of involving lawyers due to some disgusting AI images that some fans had made. Never once did she say anything negative; never once did she involve herself within the sport itself, never once did she do anything that possibly could have made her deserve the level of disrespect that she received Yet the fans still had the audacity to make her feel responsible for anything and everything they possibly could

Contrary to beliefs, Taylor Swift is in actuality enhancing the NFL. As we all know Taylor has an insane amount of influence, so when the relationship was announced, the swifties were quick to sell out the Kansas City Chiefs jerseys with 87 on the back. In fact, Travis Kelce jerseys went up 400%! This is a perfect example of what Taylor is capable of and how it benefits the NFL

Week 5 was a busy week for our students! We had 22 RISE students attend World Scholars Cup (WSC). WSC is an annual international academic program that has more than 15,000 students from over 65 countries participating every year This year Hillcrest Christian College were the hosts of the GC Regional Round where we hosted 450 students from across the state

ISSUE01/ FAREWELL WEEK 5/6

As we reflect on the past two weeks of RISE, we've encountered a collection of activities and achievements that we have experienced together as a cohort along our journey at Rise. Week 5 and 6 have been especially eventful, marked by various achievements and memorable moments.

Monday Week 5, we started the week off with our HPE Exam which challenged us to apply our knowledge and skills in health and physical education, fostering a deeper understanding of the importance of macronutrients, micronutrients, hydration and other important health topics Through rigorous preparation and dedication, we tackled this assessment with resilience and determination.

In the realm of science, our checkpoints served as invaluable benchmarks, allowing us to gauge our progress and comprehension of key concepts and work toward our main science experiment due by week 7. These checkpoints not only tested our scientific knowledge but also encouraged critical thinking and problem-solving skills essential for our academic growth.

In mathematics, the drafting process provided us with an opportunity to refine our mathematical reasoning and computational abilities. Students have been designing a modified ‘ run ’ in order to create a safer or more engaging play space. Building towards the question, “How can we create better skate/dog spaces at Coolangatta?” This enables Rise students to dive deeper into the world of Pythagoras’ theorem and Trigonometry.

The introduction of grade 9 lockers signifies a new chapter in our academic journey, offering us a space to organize our belongings and foster a sense of independence and responsibility. As we embrace this change, we look forward to the convenience and organization it brings to our daily lives.

As we bid farewell to weeks 5 and 6 of Term 1 of RISE, we extend our deepest gratitude to every one of you for joining us on this incredible experience as you read these updates about our journey at Rise Your dedication, enthusiasm, and unwavering support continue to inspire us each day. Thank you for being an integral part of our community.
