Holiday Hullabaloo and Family Time by: Taylor Abrahamsen

Holiday hullabaloo brings about the warmth of pumpkin spice, falling leaves, and decorative trees. But as we enter into the season of celebration, the stress of planning it all can take away the merriment. Bask in the season this year and make a point of renewing with your family as we enter into the next decade.

Demanding schedules and juggling responsibilities in a busy home can result in less time shared during this stress-filled season.

Quite an irony when we take a pause to reflect on what the holidays are about, family. It doesn’t have to be a trip away from home, or an expensive shared experience, but intentional time strengthening your bond together.

Studies by The American College of Pediatricians show the benefits of family time ripples through every member. Young children learn proper playing techniques and communication when interacting with siblings and parents. Teenagers are proven to share more, act out less, and perform better with adequate time spent with their parents. Even the adults can benefit! Psychology, Health, and Medicine published a study showing adults who commit to uninterrupted leisure time with their families can lower stress and the negative health impacts stress can lead to. Less stress and more time to watch your family as they grow, talk about a win-win!

Sometimes we wonder, well since there is nothing planned for us to do, what is there to do? Knock that barrier down! Healthy

time together can mean whatever your family enjoys. Be creative in your interests and share them with your kids, it is crazy to see how much joy they (and you) will take in a shared love of something.

Sharing “risks” or new experiences together is a great way to bond as well. Consider the fun of not watching but sharing a first experience with your child. No matter what it is, picking apples in an orchard, riding a horse, building a life-size scarecrow, or even skydiving, you can both experience it together! Building the bond of adventure and fun makes the family bond and trust stronger.

Consider making game night a part of your weekly routine with simple acts like tag or hide and seek when everyone gets home.

Or perhaps teach your child to work with their hands as you build a gift for another family you share Christmas with.

Better yet, serve your community together. In the world of things, it’s hard for adults to think of the suffering of our neighbors. For a child it’s about as foreign as quantum physics. Taking time as a family to volunteer at a food bank or women’s shelter, or handing out hygiene bags to the homeless man at the streetlight, will put it all into perspective. Help your family understand how fortunate they are for everything they consider normal parts of life and share together in your gratitude.

Strong bonds will benefit your relationship for life, through all the struggles and transitions you will share with your children. Time together now will help ensure sharing for the seasons to come.

September 24-29: Comal County Fair, New Braunfels

November 1-10, Wurstfest, New Braunfels

The Comal County Fair emphasizes agriculture, animal husbandry, home economic skills, arts, entertainment, as well as promoting local industry. Bands provide entertainment and food booths supply great food, while providing income for local organizations. There is a Friday morning parade and 4 days of PRCA rodeo.

october October 20: Boo Bash, San Antonio Put on your best Halloween costume and get ready to do the Monster Mash as Traders Village presents it’s eighth annual Boo Bash, the biggest free spooktacular for kids in San Antonio. On Sunday afternoon, from 12:30 pm to 4:30 pm, Traders Village will be loaded with more Halloween entertainment and fun than ever before. Boo Bash 2019 will present live musical entertainment, activities, a Bootastic Parade and monster-sized Trick-orTreating by our generous vendors who will place a pumpkin in front of their location to let you know to stop for candy.

October 25: Haunted River Jr., San Antonio Have yourself a ghoulishly good time on the River Walk celebrating Halloween. Eerie sights and sound shall haunt the river while adults party and families trick or treat at two great separate events: Family event held at the Shops of Rivercenter lagoon from 6-9:30 pm. 2,500 free Trick-or-Treat bags are distributed to kids, while supplies last.

Maps to participating restaurants giving away candy are given out with candy bags.

Other entertainment includes a kids costume contest, face painting, and DJ. 8
