Sailing - Keelboat Racing

Some 30 or so yachts make up the Keelboat Racing Division and on average, about 15 yachts compete in any one race. With skippers and crew combined, that’s approximately 90 people sailing on race days.

Races are held every Sunday from October to May and every second Sunday from June until August. The fleet is divided into two divisions - those yachts less than 30 feet in length and those 30 feet or longer. Races are initially handicapped according to water line length and performance. The division has its own race officers who start races, take finish times and calculate handicap results. Several Club skippers also compete regularly in Ocean Racing WA races off the metropolitan coast and blue water races to Geraldton, Carnarvon and Bunbury. Some also embark on massive challenges – one finished 2nd on IRC in the Melbourne to Osaka race and another entered the Golden Globe Race, an unassisted solo global circumnavigation with no modern technology. Others have completed the Sydney Hobart Yacht Race more than once! The division holds several longer races such as the Mindarie and Return, Fairway Race, Commodore’s Cup, Australia Day Race, Mariners and Shepherdess Cup

and Marmion Reef Race. Hillarys Yacht Club hosts the interclub regatta, the Pot of Gold. It’s not all about adrenalin-charged competition, though, and if you’re a more laid-back character, or appreciate a change of pace, there is something for you too. Twilight Sailing on Friday nights between January and March is the perfect way to end the working week and welcome in the weekend. These events are informal in nature and provide an opportunity for like-minded spirits to enjoy an hour or so of sailing on warm balmy evenings while watching the sun set over the Indian Ocean. It brings the whole family together in a relaxed atmosphere and a few laughs are guaranteed. Many who enjoy getting out on the water for pleasure would argue that sailing does not get any better than this. It’s traditional to come back to the Club for a drink or two at Pinky’s Wet Bar, accompanied by some tasty bar snacks and the famous Hillarys Friday Night Buffet.
