Purpose
The HiLite is a student publication distributed to students, faculty and staff of Carmel High School, with a press run of 4,500. Copies are distributed to every school in the Carmel Clay district as well as the Chamber of Commerce, city hall and the Carmel Clay Public Library. The paper serves as a public forum and two-way communication for both the school and the community. Opinions expressed in the newspaper are not necessarily those of CHS nor the Carmel Clay system faculty, staff or administration.

My challenge: get involved
I
remember being a freshman; it was only three years ago. Unfortunately, I was so afraid of this school that I didn’t take advantage of all the cool activities that it offers. I found my way later, and now I’m proud to say that I’m involved in all sorts of activities and became one of the managing editors of the HiLite. Being a HiLite editor, there are a lot of assignments, and semester projects. The Freshman Activities Guide issue started out as my semester final for newspaper. I wanted to do a design final instead of a writing one. Honestly, I wasn’t sure that we would end up using this idea in any of our issues. The Guide was originally titled “Freshman Survival Guide.” That name changed over the course of last summer. As HiLite staff members, we did this to make high school a little bit better
and less intimidating for you guys. If I could give you one piece of advice, it would be to flip to pages 4 to 7 and take a look at the clubs and activities list, or walk around the Activities Fair and find some interesting clubs. On the last page of this guide, we have included what looks like a notepad. Simply fold your HiLite in half and write down what interests you. Now, here’s our challenge: find at least one thing to get involved with. It doesn’t have to be super intense. But something that makes you happy. Something that makes you look forward to school. Seriously, there are clubs for everyone. There’s Astronomy Club, Swing Dance Club and many others. If you don’t like a club or activity, feel free to start your own. That process issimple: just find memebers, a sponser and get it approved. I can’t stress enough that there is no excuse for you to not be involved at Carmel. Go to the football games with your friends. Hate football? Join Club Med and shadow a doctor. Do yourself a favor and get involved with one of this school’s many clubs.

Sponsor: Wendy Gerardot Description: A team that participates in the statewide Academic Decathlon competition.
ACADEMIC SUPER BOWL
Sponsors: Matt Dillon, James Ziegler Description: This is a research-based competition. The research begins in late fall and continues into March when competition begins. There are five academic specific teams and one interdisciplinary team which compete with other Indiana schools by answering a series of multiple choice questions based on the subject matter researched on the topic selected for the competition year. Students may select a maximum of two academic areas for competition that include English, Social Studies, Math, Science and Fine Arts.
ADOPT-A-SCHOOL CLUB
Sponsor: Dan Bates Description: Seeks to assist and provide opportunities for improvement in public education in disadvantaged urban schools by mentoring/tutoring the students and advocating for the schools by helping connect them with other organizations which can provide additional resources and volunteers to these schools.

Many opportunities in engineering, mechanics, programming, animation, marketing, and fundraising exist. This club requires a heavy time commitment and is not intended for the casual attendee.
