Senior Class brings traditional senior prank-planning to the 21st century

ast August, as the Class of 2012 prepared to assume its role as leaders of the school, hundreds of seniors were invited to join a mysterious Facebook group called “Dumbledore’s Army” and were friend requested by a fake account under the name Hank Mardukas. To date, nearly 600 members of this year’s Senior Class have joined the group, forming a legion of students who would plan senior pranks and spread school spirit as the members journey through their final year of high school. Before these seniors graduate, the HiLite will give you the scoop on this online club.

The first successful prank that spawned from the group was when a large majority of the seniors formed a line to shake Principal Williams’ hand on Homecoming Day 2011.

“It worked out extremely well considering that none of the administration were aware that it was going to happen and were all surprised,” Ahmad said.

Members also organized a Christmas caroling session between passing periods the last day before winter break and helped Senate set up a flash mob for a Neon Dance advertisement.

“A lot of members have used the group for comedic posts…but most of the good ideas we’ve taken into consideration,” Ahmad said.

How It Started

The Army’s Future

According to Shayan Ahmad, Dumbledore’s Army cofounder and senior, he and senior Terrance Lewis created the Facebook group to form a system of mass communication for the Senior Class. The idea began when Ahmad and Lewis spoke with friends about senior prank ideas, and they quickly realized they would need a medium to spread the word about the pranks to other seniors.

“We thought we would pay homage to the story of our generation, Harry Potter, and named the group after Harry's band of student rebels,” Ahmad said. “To avoid having a face to the group and have people not want to participate solely because they did not like me or Terrance, we made the fake Facebook account of Hank Mardukas, who plays a small role in the movie, ‘I Love You, Man.’ Terrance actually set up the account, and we discuss ideas and plans together, but generally speaking, I'm the one who actually uses Hank Mardukas' account and posts in the group.”

As far as he knows, Ahmad said nothing like this has ever been done by a previous year’s Senior Class.

While the future of the group is uncertain, Ahmad said he believes Dumbledore’s Army has been successful in uniting the Class of 2012. Recently, Dumbledore’s Army posted a plan to celebrate Williams’ birthday, which was earlier this month.

As planned, the lobby was filled with balloons the next day.

“Most members are willing and on board with enthusiasm,” he said. “Of course there have been dissenting members, but after several chances, those who just try to spam the group are kicked out.”

According to Ahmad, the administration has been suspicious of how the seniors have so easily organized events like the handshake line and caroling, but as far as he knows, the administration is unaware thus far of the existence of Dumbledore’s Army.

“Terrance and I have ensured that no pranks have any sense of vandalism or illegality, so once they inevitably find out about our group and how Terrance and I have led it, I don't anticipate any legitimate backlash,” Ahmad said. “I expect perhaps an awkward conversation with the administration, but I think they understand why we're doing this and that no one has actually suffered due to our pranks.”

A Q&A with Principal Williams Our headmaster’s take on Dumbledore’s Army What was your reaction on Homecoming Day when almost the entire senior class lined up in the senior hallway to shake your hand?

I was just honored. I was really moved by it. It was neat. I thought it was genuine. I hope that kids know how important it is to me to be out there with them and say ‘hi’ to them and have some conversations with them. It means a lot for me to be out there and for them to recognize that and maybe think that’s important. It was moving.

Did you know about the handshake prank prior to its occurrence?

No, I had no idea. You guys are good, of course with Facebook and all this; you can plan things pretty quickly. I just thought it was neat. A lot of things our kids do are very creative, but certainly appropriate; it didn’t disrupt, it wasn’t disrespectful, it wasn’t done so that they could get away with something. It was like a lot of things our kids do: neat.

Do you encourage these types of planned activities that the Senior Class coordinates?

I think that there’s room for spontaneity in what we do.

To me, it certainly always goes back to what the intent is.

You know, when we have Homecoming and the drum corps comes out and kids get out there and dance. Do we always worry about, ‘Well, okay, what happens when the bell rings?’ But it works out fine, and again, we have this special situation here where kids kind of know, ‘Okay, we can go out there and dance for a few minutes, but then you know what, we’ve got to get to class, too. Or we can carol in the hallway, but you know what, if we have a fire drill, we need to be quiet and get to where we’re supposed to be.’

For me to say, ‘Yeah, we encourage kids to do things they’re not supposed to do?’ No. Absolutely not. Is there room for spontaneity in our day that’s appropriate and well thought out and with good intentions? I mean, nobody got in trouble for any of those things. Now again, if somebody wants to think they can tape doors shut or do something like that, we’re not going to put up with that. And if it’s disruptive, if it’s mean or hateful, we will have no tolerance for it.

Our rules are in effect until you get your diploma, and we don’t say that as a threat, because really we don’t need that, but it’s a fact. We always worry that someone will think, ‘Because I only have one more week of school, I can do something that’s really stupid and no one is going to do anything about it.’ Well, there are kids who have been suspended, expelled and kept from graduating the day before commencement. We just want people to make good decisions, and my advice is always better safe than sorry. And if you think, ‘This may not be a good idea,’ it’s probably not a good idea.

While this season’s record prevented the Colts from reaching Super Bowl XLVI, students here certainly didn’t stop paying attention to football. For the first time in history, Indianapolis hosted the event, a face-off between the New York Giants and the New England Patriots. Although the Giants ended up victorious, more significant to most students was how the event temporarily transformed the city. Indianapolis was filled with Super Bowl festivities including tours, the Super Bowl Village and the longest temporary zipline in the nation, creating memories for all who visited.

After learning that Westboro Baptist Church would be protesting the Carmel Lutheran Church for its “lukewarm” stance on homosexuality, senior Anna Sands used Facebook to set up a counter-protest. Armed with picket signs, CHS students and parents were able to significantly outnumber the original protestors, responding to the hate speech with their own words in order to promote tolerance.

For its first “prank,” Dumbledore’s Army got the senior class to form a massive line for the sole purpose of shaking hands with principal John Williams the morning of Homecoming day.

The spectacle spanned from the commons through half of the senior hallway, confusing nearby onlookers. While Williams disbanded the remaining students after the 7:50 bell, no hallsweeps were given, keeping the operation fun and harmless for all parties involved--just like a good prank should be.

While the show choirs’ annual “Holiday Spectacular” performance traditionally has one intermission between its impressive musical acts, this year there was an unprecedented second “intermission” in the midst of the performance. Right as the Accents finished their rendition of Lady Gaga’s “Telephone,” a fire alarm went off, delaying the end of the show by almost half an hour. Thankfully, the alarm sounded because of not fire, but smoke from the fog machine.

Repeated use of the number 11 has historically been a sign of good luck, with both 11:11 a.m. and p.m. considered a good time for wishing. But on this day, students here were met with the most 11s they will witness in their lifetime. This led to a variety of celebrations for the magical minute, with some students freezing in place in the senior hallway while others simply made a wish for themselves.

“I believe the accomplishments of this school year are the culmination of the dedication shown by our student athletes, coaches and parents. This is a special Senior Class across the board in all areas. They have shown leadership in so many different ways this school year, and it has been reflected in the culture and pride that exists in the school.” - Athletics Director Jim Inskeep

When the men’s basketball team ended the winter sports season with a State Championship, it propelled this school to a state record of seven State Championships in a single school year (the previous record was six, also held by CHS). The catch is only 12 sports have completed their seasons so far, meaning this school has an entire spring sports season to add on to the record.

“Last year was really tough to go down against HSE and lose in the Sectional, but I guess that made this year’s win even more special because we got revenge on them. I’m really proud of the team and the seniors for the way we handled everything this year.” - Forward and senior Brooke Backes (University of Iowa)

After breaking her leg in the team’s Sectional loss to Hamilton Southeastern last year, Brooke Backes, forward and senior for the women’s soccer team, got a second chance at the Royals when the two teams met each other in the State Championship. Backes and the team proved they were up for the challenge, as she scored the game’s only goal and helped the team clinch its first State Championship since 2004. At the conclusion of the season, Backes was named Miss Soccer by the Indiana Soccer Coaches Association.

The way the setting was, how loud it was in the stadium, being under the lights with all my brothers...It’s something I don’t think I’ll ever relive in my life sports-wise. After losing a heart-breaker to Warren Central at Lucas Oil Stadium, the football team had another shot at the Warriors, but this time at home in the Sectional Championship. The team battled back from an early deficit, and the Sectional Championship was all but clinched with 34 seconds left in the game when Jalen Duncan, running back and senior, ran to the endzone for the final touchdown of the game. That touchdown, a signature play of the 2011 season, made the Hounds the new favorite to win the State Championship.

“(Winning the State Championship game) meant a lot. There were some really good teams and players to come through Carmel between the time we last won and now, so for us to win as a good and close team and win it that way means a lot. I think our seniors led by example, and we set the tone for the rest of the team.”

The men’s basketball team achieved something this season that it had not done for the last 35 years: win a State Championship. Without a single major Division I recruit on the roster, the team repeatedly proved itself on its way to Bankers Life Fieldhouse, where it captured the ultimate prize. The team finished its season with a final record of 23-4, the most wins a Carmel basketball team has compiled since 1970.

We dominated the number one team in the state from start to finish with a tremendous team effort. Our four seniors provided the leadership and set the example for future Carmel teams.”

The men’s basketball team knew that winning the Sectional Championship for the first time since 2008 would be no easy task. The team had to beat Hamilton Southeastern, a team loaded with Division I recruits, to win the Sectional, and that’s exactly what it did. In a game that was not nearly as close as the final score indicated, the Greyhounds cruised to an 18-point victory in front of a large and rowdy crowd.

“There is always more pressure for the defending State Champions to repeat, but many of our top runners were seniors, and we were able to lead the team to a repeat and leave high school on a high note. It was awesome to finish with such a good score at State, too.” - Runner and senior Renee Wellman (Northwestern University)

In the most dominant performance ever recorded in the State Final, the women’s cross-country team pummeled the 24-team field en route to winning its second consecutive State Championship and finishing a dominant undefeated season. The team finished with a record low 43 points in the State meet, blowing away its record of 73 points, which won the State Championship in 2010. The Greyhounds placed five runners in the top 20 in the meet, while the most any other school had was two.

“It’s something pretty special to win back-to-back state championships. We always knew it was definitely possible but actually doing the hard work during the regular season and pulling through during the State tournament was really satisfying. I think our seniors were at the forefront in terms of playing on the court as well as leading off the court which set a good example for the younger players.” - Elliott Yee, tennis player and senior (IU)

The men’s tennis team started the season ranked number one in the state, it stayed number one through the year, and it finished number one as it capped an undefeated season by capturing its second consecutive State Championship. Asserting its dominance in every match, the team only dropped two points throughout the entire postseason, and it swept North Central in the finals to clinch the title.

“I was really happy that we won and could keep the streak going and get closer to the national record. Being a part of this team is really awesome. Being part of this legacy and having everyone from the past supporting us, with the legacy continuing from team to team, is really special.”

They’ve done it for the past 25 years, and they did it again. The women’s swimming and diving team won its 26th consecutive State Championship this year, adding to its already astounding record. The team is only three more State Championships away from tying the national record for most consecutive State Championships in any sport by any school in the country.

“When I made it, I was just kind of relieved. I had never shot in a shootout, so I was really glad I made it and didn’t let the team down. For me, I wasn’t one of the captains, so I think taking that shot helped me show my leadership to the team as a senior.” - Forward and senior Maggie Morris (IU)

Like almost every postseason game of the women’s soccer team’s season, the Semistate game against Columbus North came down to the final moments. With the game tied at the end of regulation, it was set to be decided by penalty kicks. Goalkeeper and senior Sam Tiongson delivered a stellar performance during the shootout, but the defining moment was when Maggie Morris, a forward and senior who had her appendix removed just six days prior, kicked the game-winning shot that sent the team to its first State final since 2004.

Senior columns

Well, here we are, wrapping up our sophomore year at CHS. Wait, what? It’s been four years already? In all seriousness, it is hard to believe how quickly a great four years could go by. I remember my first day as though it were yesterday. In fact the very first class I went to was Newspaper 1, which led me to become a member of the HiLite staff in the first place.

I remember my first Senate meeting, my first time to work with the convertibles at Homecoming and my first time having breakfast with Mr. Williams at a meeting of the Principal’s Advisory Council. That all happened within the first couple of months. I say this because when I look back at my CHS career, I know that it started just as well as it ended. I have no regrets, and I have nothing but gratitude for the many opportunities this institution offers. I am not the smartest, most athletic, most eloquent or friendliest Greyhound, but I still had as much of a chance as anyone else to find great success.

If there is one piece of advice I could give, it would be to set goals and stick to them. I have had mixed results with goal setting, but I can tell you that (for all you fellow seniors who endured economics) the benefits have outweighed the costs.

Case in point: at the end of my eighth grade year at Creekside Middle School, I made a pledge that I would end my “career” as the classroom weatherman. Well, that didn’t happen. Sure enough, I came to CHS, and the legend followed me. Everyone wanted to know what the weather was, and I was deemed a hero when I warned my fellow Senators of impending rain for Homecoming Day, which turned out to be very accurate. Before I knew it, I was being called down to Mrs. Skeens-Benton’s office where she asked me to do periodic weather forecasts on CHTV. With that, I’ll just say that the rest is history.

This brings me to my second piece of advice: understand that things happen for a reason. If you think about it, the idea of me being “the weatherman” is the direct result of me miserably failing at attaining my goal. With that being said though, I have met so many new people and have been able to be a part of some great organizations simply by having that sort of recognition.

For that I am extremely grateful.

As I move forward, I know that I have goals to set, but at the same time I know that if I do my best, everything else will take care of itself. This fall I will be attending Wabash College as a Little Giant. I define a “little giant” just as I would define myself as I embarked on my four year journey here. Work hard, take advantage of every opportunity, but never get in the way of the plan that is in store for you. Simply put, be a giant in your actions, but remain little in acknowledging that the result is not entirely your call. By Patrick Bryant

It may come as a surprise to most people that in our great school, we have only just elected our first black president and Muslim speaker of the House. With a high percentage of Caucasian students and Asian activists, we have seen those two groups represented prior to 2011. Obviously, the majority typically wants a candidate who embodies the same characteristics as itself, but we were able to change that. Now we’re not calling ourselves revolutionaries, but how was it possible for the two of us, who may not look like typical Carmel High School students, to fill these positions so seamlessly?

We have been able to combat the challenges that come along with trying to fit in with and lead our homogenous student body by amalgamating. One of the areas we shine in is our ability to incorporate cultural slang into our daily operations. Senior Jalen Mangis said, “I like how Terrance and Mo say, ‘Whaddup, Jalen?’ as opposed to the typical Caucasian duo who would say, ‘Hello, kind sir.’” Also, we have made it a point to intermingle with students via participation in diverse extracurricular activities. In company with attending going-ons, we gather our student brethren in friendly cultural basketball games about twice a week. The games almost always include all ethnicities. Senior Justin Hill exclaims, “Playing basketball with my assorted bros is fun, but Terrance is so good!”

Not everyone, however, agrees with all the accomplishments we claim. Senior Conner Buckley argues, “Aside from Mo and Terrance just having their skin colors, they haven’t really done anything for racial diversity.” Though we disagree with this, we respect his opinion.

A prime example of just how shocking this victory was can be found in the thoughts of Terrance’s girlfriend Junior Lauren Barker. She said, “I didn’t have faith in Terrance pulling out the victory, but I’m happy because of the perks I receive as first lady of Carmel High School.” David Chiang, former speaker of the House, warned Mo of the low probability of getting the “W” in the election, but in the end, Mo had faith in Carmel High School’s open-mindedness. This leads to our final question: Does the diversity of the student leaders end with us, or are the barriers broken? By Mo Issa and Terrance Lewis

As senior year comes to a close, the majority of us find ourselves in some sort of an accomplished state. We’ve graduated. It’s over. Some of us got accepted into Ivy League schools; some of us were captains of championship-winning sports teams; some of us got the solos in every musical performance. But what about the students who, for one reason or another, just couldn’t make the cut? What about the students here who didn’t make the most out of high school in the ways we’re traditionally taught to make use of it? Are they forever doomed for mediocrity? Eh. Everything has its place. The aforementioned achievements are all amazing feats in their own right, providing people with irreplaceable experiences (and of course, bragging rights). To all of you who have already come across success, I applaud you. Odds are you’ll find a way to continue achieving. But for the rest of us, there’s definitely still hope.

This sort of statement may seem odd coming from me, a managing editor of this newspaper. But honestly, I’m far from a model student. I’m lazy. I set plenty of goals in high school I was unable to achieve. I’m going to IU after applying to around 15 schools. Yet I don’t feel hopeless about the future.

Starting anything post-graduation is like having a blank slate. It’s a way to abandon your mistakes and regrets with a new chance to do what you really want. So all of you who in some way failed yourself in high school, I encourage you to seek ways to turn that around in the rest of your life. By Yameen Hameed

So here we are, on the cusp of graduation, ready to go out into the collegiate world and begin studying for our respective careers. It is important to know that even though it may not be an incredibly easy journey deciding what path to take, it is an essential one to decide where you want to spend your time. Even if obstacles stand in your way, or you sometimes question your own path, trust yourself in knowing that in the end, you alone know yourself and what is best for you.

We have always wanted our own radio show. We have completely different tastes in music, but that wouldn’t matter. We always thought our conversations were so deliciously entertaining that everyone would want to listen to them. Alas, the radio show did not happen, partially because we always joked that there would be too much stifled laughing on the air that there would be no time to play music. We decided to spare humanity. But we do still have a few pieces of advice for you, whoever you may be. Just don’t read this while driving, and you will be safe.

One important part of high school is discovering who excited for what the future holds for me. Am I scared about you are and what you want to do in the future. As cheesy the money? No, because in the end, I know that I’ll be as that sounds, every person has a path that he or she must working hard for something that is important to me, and take in life, and choosing a career is one important aspect. that kind of fulfillment is more valuable in the end.

Once you settle on what you are passionate about, there I (Kendall) have gone through many career path changes will inevitably be obstacles along the way: people telling in my time, from my middle school obsession with forensics you that you can’t do it, self-doubt plaguing your mind and to my potential psychology career. I absolutely loathed one of my science in my mind. Is this a career I would be interested in? Now I’m actually thinking also to ease their worries and decode any scary-sounding about majoring in this class’s subject matter. This is the procedures that were about to be done. After some time and research, When I made public my decision to be a teacher, many I decided this was something I wanted to pursue. However, of those close to me asked, “Why? You could do so much this career path is not without its obstacles. You could make so much more money.” I am not more than a little discouraged. But even after this rejection, naïve; I understand that teaching does not pay as well as I knew I still wanted to be a nurse and could get there if I other lucrative careers, but that doesn’t mean that it is not worked hard enough. Now, with my future plans leading to an important job. One teacher can have a big effect on a IU, I plan to study my butt off to get myself where I want to classroom of students, and I want that opportunity be. If there’s one thing I could say about senior year, it’s that it is unforgettable. Unforgettable not just in the obvious sense that it’s senior year. Unforgettable because for me it was the year in which I was able to truly step out of the box, branch out and make the most out of my high school experience. Looking back, there’s no way I could’ve possibly predicted the path I have taken, the choices I have made and the friends I have made when I entered the daunting hallways of CHS as a freshman. If the movies were true, then we could expect there to be two types of people in high school: Regina George and Emilio Estevez.

But alas, the movies are ever so misleading, and rumors about senior year are no different. They say all the stresses of previous years disappear the moment you step into the school as a senior. If there ever was a time to apply the phrase “YOLO,” it should be now. But easy and laid back? Nope. My dreams of a cake-walk style senior year were crushed. No one told me college apps would be so stressful, or that senioritis would hit so belatedly. But through it all, I still managed to walk out with the biggest slice of cake, rich with a million layers of sweet firsts and no bitter regrets.

For the first time my senior year, I drove to school and walked up the trail. My friend took me to Ohio on 11.11.11 to a live concert by one of my favorite artists. I discovered my passion for baking by co-founding the blog, Pass the Cocoa. I fell in love with Les Mis, went on late start bagel trips and ice cream dates, experienced HiLite photo adventures and more.

If I could give any advice to my freshman self upon entering high school, it’d be this: Branch out and have an open mind.

“YOLO” moments are everywhere, and not just during senior year. But it’s up to you to seize these moments. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Why do those white trees smell like fish? Where in the world is Ouagadougou? Why can’t we make “cray” happen?

By branching out, you’d be amazed how much you’ll discover about the things around you.

Someone once said, “The voracious ambition of humans is never sated by dreams coming true, because there is always the thought that everything might be done better and again.” There’s always a desire to achieve the best at this school. But while academics, sports and leadership are important, never let them overshadow your relationships with others. At the most basic level, friends connect us with the world around us. But more than that, friends can be sources of inspiration, and they offer support and comfort in good times and bad. It’s important not to lose sight of those relationships—to think about the future but also live in the present. Seize those “YOLO” moments. By Monica Cheng

In each paragraph of this column, I have cleverly inserted the title of one of my favorite graduation songs as my way of saying goodbye to all my lovely readers. See if you can find them all.

When this column is published, I will have less than a week left of high school. But as I am writing this, I feel like I am less sentimental than I should be. I mean, I’ve had the time of my life at Carmel High School. I have met so many talented people and have been presented with so many unique opportunities. I should be kissing the floors and walls of this place (or maybe not, since that would be disgusting); however, I can’t bring forth even a single tear.

Maybe it’s because I have moved so many times before that I have gotten used to saying goodbyes. Or maybe it’s because I just learned I did not get the graduation speech. But those are silly reasons for me to be contemptuous. When I was going through the quotes people wrote down for the HiLite survey, I felt like some others shared my contempt. But to all of you who say good riddance to this school, you should be embracing what is left of it.

And for those of you who are crying, stop it. We are about to be adults, and have responsibilities—okay, maybe you can cry a little. But perhaps a better use of your time would be to do all of the same things you used to. Making a big fuss about goodbyes makes everyone sad; instead, use what precious time you have left to do all the things you usually or used to do before you breakaway. And perform these activities in the most hardcore fashion that is physically plausible.

Don’t be the person who writes sappy messages all over each other’s yearbooks and then loses the yearbook or leaves it somewhere gathering dust as you live your life. Do not simply write your feelings for each other in a book; write with your thoughts and memories, which are far more permanent than any Sharpie.

The great thing about leaving high school is the ability to see how far we’ve come. We can walk through the hallways of the Freshman Center and remember the times we were naive little newcomers. And we can visit our old teachers and friends that we have lost touch with and reminisce on old times. These last few days mark the end of us being stupid high school students; on May 24 we will become young adults. So why not enjoy it while it lasts? By Ben Anderson

“Success without honor is an unseasoned dish; it will satisfy your hunger, but it won’t taste good.”

Though Joe Paterno is dead, throughout his career he offered words of wisdom to the thousands of players he coached.

While this message was most likely intended for his players, it is easily applicable to sportsmanship and the success of the Class of 2012 in athletics.

Certainly, it is an honor to win seven State titles, but how would we have felt about winning those through poor sportsmanship in the players; more importantly, the fans?

The men’s varsity basketball team fell to HSE 57-53 on Feb. 8 in a tightly-contested game at HSE. Students who attended the game were angry and upset. You could tell by the body language of the team after the game that the players were worn down and extremely disappointed. It’s difficult to imagine how the rest of season would have gone had that mentality continued from both the students and student-athletes.

Your exceptional sportsmanship was rewarded on March 2. In a game in which CHS led by as many as 26 points, you cheered on your fellow classmates while refraining from getting out of control. In the end, the Greyhounds were crowned Sectional champions.

Later on, you could hear the HSE students yelling “B.S.” I remember the sectional championship against HSE the year before: students called HSE players ugly, for example—a poor display of sportsmanship in a game that we lost. This isn’t rocket science; sportsmanship affects the game.

Going further back into the school year, the memories still stung from the Circle City Classic High School Showcase matchup against Warren Central at Lucas Oil Stadium. Losing on a last-second field goal to arguably our school’s biggest rival in the metro area was tough. Not to worry, because on Nov. 4, we defeated Warren Central 34-30 on a touchdown run with less than a minute remaining in regulation. After the victory, students waited to storm the field until after Warren Central coaches and players had completely left the field. Three weeks later, CHS was crowned State champion.

Be proud of our accomplishments. Be proud of your fellow student-athlete classmates. Be proud of your school spirit.

But most importantly, be proud of how you acted and the sportsmanship you showed to other schools throughout the year.

Yes, this column is a bit counterintuitive. Yes, I understand the last thing any teenager wants is for another person to tell them what to do. And yes, that’s what I’m about to do in this column. So, if you’re already tired of hearing what you should and shouldn’t do, then… well, sorry. Here’s what I’m telling you to do: notice your family.

The older you get, the less time you spend with your family members, and this is by design. But the more time you spend away from them, the more you realize how important they are to you. It’s kind of ironic if you think about it. As teenagers, we go through high school trying to find any and every possible way to become free from the grasp of our parents and authority in general. And as I’m sure many high school students would agree, we get pretty darn good at it. But once you get older, you start to realize that maybe your mom was right every once and a while, or maybe your dad does care about you after all. Side note: I’m not delusional; I realize I’m not any older than most people reading this. But, for the sake of the column, I’m speaking as a wise, experienced guy who “knows” what he is talking about. So just keep reading please.

As you get older, life keeps getting busier, which means some things require more of your attention than others. But, as the old adage says, with age comes responsibility, and spending time with your family is your responsibility. Obviously, as you grow older and mature, you gain more freedom in terms of being able to choose what you do over the course of a day. But all I’m saying is family time needs to remain one of those options. I think almost any senior would agree with me when I say that, throughout high school, things change, people change, circumstances change…just about anything that can change will change. But there is one thing that never changes: family. It’s cliché. It’s also true.

I’ll acknowledge that friends play a huge role in a high school student’s maturation, but that doesn’t mean family needs to go by the wayside. Too many times, I witness people go days at a time without even coming home. That’s not good. That’s not good because regardless of how annoying they are or how much they get on your nerves, you need family. The success rates of people who are close with their family members are way higher than those of people who don’t pay much attention to family.

That knowledge alone should explain my purpose in writing this column. So let me repeat myself: they’re really important.

Life can move pretty fast, and it’s so easy for teenagers to let families get lost in the shuffle. Don’t let that happen, because at some point in your life, you are going to regret it. You’re going to look back and kick yourself for not spending more time with your brother or not listening to you mom instead of doing what you thought was more fun. They don’t have to be your companions on a Friday or Saturday night, but at least pay them a little attention -- I’d venture to say they probably deserve it. Everyone in high school has a lot to look forward to in life, and one thing you certainly don’t want is a broken relationship with your family. So give your family a little love; it will pay off in the long run. Just trust me on this one. By Charlie Browning

Did you campaign for prom queen, or was it a surprise?

Did you campaign for prom king, or was it a surprise?

No, it was more of a surprise.

Did you ever dream of being prom queen when you were younger?

I didn’t really think about it until now. I am still really shocked.

I told people to participate no matter who they were going to vote for, and after they voted, a lot of them said that they might not have voted (had I not told them to).

Would you change anything about prom?

At my mother’s prom, they served dinner, and I think that would be really enjoyable. Also, I would like to move it somewhere cooler, like the Children’s Museum.

No, it actually was a really great prom. The theme was set up right with lights and ornaments (piñatas) and especially with DJ V, who did a great job choosing and letting other people choose music, which helped make prom more exciting and fun!

What are you going to do with your crown?

What is the one thing you would say to your subjects?

I’ve kept it on a shelf in my room.

Let them eat quesadillas!
