PG&E Reaches Out to the Community

PG&E workers discuss several ways the company is reaching out and helping the community.

On Friday, Sept 21st, PG&E held a media roundtable to provide direct dialogue with PG&E to address any PG&E related issues affecting the Latino communities.

“The purpose of this media roundtable is to build relationships with our community,” said Monica Tell, External Communications at PG&E. “We want to make ourselves more accessible to the community.

One of the ways that PG&E has reached out to the community is by creating the PowerPathway program, which is a collaborative workforce model producing the skilled and diverse workers needed by PG&E and the energy and utilities industry.

“The program was started in 2007 because we needed to have the next wave of workers ready to go,” said Mario Rendon, Principal Program Manager, Workforce Development at PG&E. “We have been working with several organizations and schools to find workers. We want our

workers to reflect the population that we serve.

The program not only helps by employing people from the local community, but by providing them with skills such as basic interviewing skills, resume skills and physical conditioning.

“We are starting to see our investment pay off because people are starting to stay with us,” Rendon said.

PowerPathway has made a commitment to the Clinton Global Initiative of America to contribute to the national rollout of an energy literacy curriculum to educational institutions, at no cost, for integration into high schools’ current science, technology, engineering and mathematics frameworks.

Veterans are also receiving employment help from PG&E. The company was one of five utility companies across the U.S. invited to take part in a nationwide initiative designed to build awareness of opportunities available in the utilities sector, that match skills learned during military service, and unify existing veterans-oriented vocational training programs from

around the country.

The PG&E roundtable also discussed ways for people and businesses to save money on their electricity bill.

Some of the No-Cost Measure recommended by PG&E were; Turn off equipment when not in use, close curtains, shades and blinds at night during unoccupied periods of the day, and on weekends, in order to maintain comfortable room temperatures and lower heating and cooling cost, clean dusty diffusers and lamps every 6 to 12 months for improved lumen output from your lighting fixtures, and use cooking equipment to capacity.

Finally, the roundtable discussed safety and what the company has been doing to keep people from getting hurt in case of a disaster such as the San Bruno pipeline explosion of 2010.

“We are trying to become more transparent with our first responders,” said Tom Munson, Public Safety Supervisor at PG&E. “Our first responders need to know how to respond properly.

Choose Informed Mind How San Jose can put more Over Developed Brawn police officers on patrol

More often than not, it is the individual with an informed mind that does very well in this current social and economic climate.

There was a time when ‘developed brawn’ was a desired state for success. Today that is not the case.

My grandchild who is petite expressed her frustration in not being able to deal with competitors who were bigger. ‘Abuelo, how can I compete against these larger girls?’ My counsel was to get her to realize that she would never be physically stronger than her larger competitive opponents.

However, with some strategic planning, she could effectively out-maneuver them because she was very agile and needed to play as a team member rather than a superstar. She applied this approach based on a quick mental assessment coupled with a rapid evaluation of at least three options, choose one, and implement quickly as appropriate. Soon thereafter, she became the soccer team captain who would guide her team through an undefeated season. For several years she was sought after as a ‘team leader’. She became informed about soccer strategy; coordinated and cooperated with all team members. She made it a point to help develop each team member’s skill level. Over time, she learned to use strategic information enabling her informed mind to ‘read’ the situation before her and respond effectively. She learned that informed strategic communication coupled with cooperation and collaboration was more usefully effective than ‘brawny strength’.

Today, American society supports a climate of competition, which, like war, is often wastefully destructive of essential resources.

We become so preoccupied with our goal to define and protect our turf. War is the ultimate competition us-

ing weapons systems and applicable technology. Our military-industrial complex has become quite able to promote itself as the path to safety and security. Imagine how much can be done with those resources which are used up by the military we support?

Imagine the ease which the Obama Administration could have used to commit American military forces during the recent ‘A rab Spring’. Many wanted to commit American military forces in Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, and Syria. But, by using NATO forces and supporting them appropriately, no use of American ground forces occurred in any of these ‘A rab Spring’ nations. Consider the level of communication, cooperation, collaboration, and coordination involved where America did not use up its available military resources. Informed minds using allied forces and statesmanship succeeded where using American military power would have complicated the situations being faced.

Consider the large amounts of money (a form of brawn) that are being expended by Super-PACs to underwrite many negative TV ads. The target audience has learned to ignore this non- factual biased propaganda. A recent analysis reveals that in Pennsylvania and Ohio, those negative ads have had no influence on the voters being targeted. Their ‘monetary brawn’ is being finessed by informed minds of people who have used Internet’s websites and so-

cial networks to inform the targeted voters as well as raising campaign funds at $102 per donor. Members of those 400 families which have more wealth than the 158,000,000 Americans of modest means, have not learned to collaborate, coordinate, and communicate truthfully and factually. Ordinary people have a basic gut reaction to being scammed. All that money will not buy nor control the most successful democratic governance system created.

Those very rich folks have forgotten that if they want to be ‘first’, they must agree to become the servants of all and be the last.’ (King James Bible, Mark 9: 3037) What this planet needs now is not more conflict, but more collaboration, cooperation, coordination, coupled with truthful communication of information.

Individuals in every society want consensual engagement in their governance.

They want to earn life’s necessities by being gainfully employed. Most know that to succeed the universal laws of nature and human relationships must be met.

This age of information technology has made it impossible for dictators to govern their nation’s people using fear and oppression. The informed mind wants to experience freedom of choice, respect, morals, ethics, and self-esteem. An informed American people will prevail over much as long as they know that all are using the same rules and have access to the truth and facts about those issues which provide hopeful opportunity leading to a meaningful future. Together we can do more. Simply stated, each individual would do well to choose having and using an informed mind over developed brawn.

Lay off city workers and cut services or protect services and preserve jobs by controlling costs: That’s the choice the San Jose City Council faced in 2011 as we confronted a 10th consecutive budget deficit.

A council majority voted to control costs and adopted a Fiscal Reform Plan that saves more than $100 million per year when fully implemented and prevents the city from sliding into service-delivery insolvency.

It’s been painful for city employees who took a 10 percent pay cut and now will have to contribute more toward their retirement or accept a more modest pension formula for future years of service. Yet they continue to serve with care and professionalism, and for that, we thank them.

These reforms mean that we can begin planning to restore critical service, starting with our police department. We have some of the best officers in the country, but years of spiraling costs have left the department understaffed and reduced its ability to respond to and investigate crimes. This is compounded by baby boomers reaching retirement eligibility, like Chief Chris Moore, who announced his retirement.

My top priority is to add officers and rebuild capacity. Here’s how we can do it: • Recruit aggressively.

Sixty recruits begin training this month and several hundred applicants are in process for next spring’s academy. This will help bring us back to full authorized staffing levels.

• Return officers to the street. The City Auditor has identified 60 positions that could be civilianized, freeing officers for patrol, investigations and crime

suppression. Neighboring cities use Community Service Officers and Reserve Officers more than San Jose. Chief Chris Moore recommends using a background investigation firm to screen recruits, as many departments do. Unfortunately, the police union has refused to meet and confer on the issue.

other departments. While San Jose remains a competitive employer, with salaries comparable to most other large California cities and one of the more generous retiree health care plans, we can do more.

• Use savings from pension reform and fiscal reforms to increase the size of our police force and restore services to at least January 2011 levels.

• We will consider retention bonuses or targeted pay increases for hard-to-fill positions.

The spiraling costs have forced cuts year after year.

We have fewer officers than 10 years ago, even with a nearly $100 million increase in the police budget.

We would have had to lay off 150 more if our police officers hadn’t agreed to the 10 percent pay reduction last year.

Still, we must acknowledge that some officers are retiring early or leaving for

A watershed is an area that drains into a common waterway that provide us with drinking water, wildlife habitat and recreational opportunities and despite their importance in our daily lives, many people are unfamiliar with the watershed in which they live or work.

On September 22 a coalition of more than 35 organizations hosted the Silicon

Valley Watershed Summit at Foothill College. The conference discussed the protection and enhancement of watersheds in Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties.

Its goal was to identify opportunities for on-going collaboration among agencies, organizations, businesses and individuals to take advantage of the region’s considerable human and biological resources.

“Some 240 people attended the event includ-

ing doctors and politicians, our keynote speaker was Lester Snow, former California Secretary of Natural Resources and current Director of the California Water Foundation” said Peter Drekmeier, Bay Area Program Director at Tuolumne River Trust. “It was funded by the Santa Clara Valley Water District, Mid-peninsula Regional Open Space District, and the Sempervirens Fund.”

The Contra Costa College District and Los Medanos College are the consortia leaders on this grant and, in addition to the other colleges and universities, will involve the Alameda County and Contra Costa County Workforce Investment Boards, employers and labor organizations in the manufacturing in-

dustry, the Career Ladders project team. The original design team worked under the title: Design it, Build it, Ship it.

The success of the program lies in its ability to help unemployed and underemployed adults train for jobs termed “middle skill” jobs for employers who have jobs that need to be filled. The grant was developed in cooperation with several employers.

The first phase of funding for this multiyear grant will be spent identifying specific programs, curriculum development, partnerships with employers, developing budgets and planning outreach efforts.

The identified job sectors include transportation, lo-

gistics and advanced manufacturing. Ohlone College’s involvement would most likely be in biotechnology and information technology. The program will award certificates for biopharmaceutical technician, engineering technician, supply chain systems, medical device manufacturing, transportation logistics, semiconductor design and fabrication and other. There will also be components for student services that include professional development, job search and placement that may be provided by the Tri-Cities One-Stop Career Center.

This grant is one of only five awarded by the Department of Labor to the state of California this year.

Combine vegetables and 3 tablespoons water in large nonstick skillet. Cover; cook over medium-high heat 4 minutes, or until crisp-tender. Remove and drain.

Cut beef steak lengthwise in half, then crosswise into 1/4inch thick strips.

Heat same pan over mediumhigh heat until hot. Add half of beef and half of garlic; stir-fry 1 to 2 minutes, or until outside surface of beef is no longer pink. Remove. Repeat with remaining beef and garlic.

Return all beef and vegetables to pan. Add stir-fry sauce and red pepper; heat through.

Spoon over rice. Sprinkle with peanuts, if desired.

Colócalo en el horno hasta la parrilla del horno de hasta abajo: hornea por 5 minutos.

Mientras tanto, rocía con spray para cocinar un molde de vidrio de 13x9 pulgadas. Seca el pescado con toallas de papel. Úntale la mantequilla y agrega el sazonador restante de bistecs y la paprika. Colócalo en el molde de vidrio.

Coloca el molde de vidrio en la parrilla del horno, arriba de donde esta la charola con las verduras. Cocina el pescado y las verduras por separado o sea como están durante 17 a 18 minutos más o hasta que puedas insertar fácilmente un tenedor en el pescado y las verduras estén suaves.

Breast cancer detection bill (Are you Dense?) signed SACRAMENTO

Governor Jerry Brown signed a bill this weekend to improve breast cancer detection in women with dense breast tissue. Senate Bill 1538, authored by State Senator Joe Simitian (DPalo Alto), will require that following a mammogram, women with dense breast tissue be informed of the following: • They have dense breast tissue; • That dense breast tissue can make it harder to evaluate the results of a mammogram; • That it is associated with an increased risk of breast cancer; • That information about breast density is given to discuss with their doctor; and • That a range of screening options are available.

Roughly 40% of the women who have mammograms have dense breast tissue. Because dense breast tissue appears white on a

mammogram, and cancer also appears white, it can be difficult to see the cancer. A January 2011 study by the Mayo Clinic found that in women with dense breast tissue, 75 percent of cancer is missed by mammography alone.

“This is a life saver,” Simitian said. “I’m tremendously thankful for the Governor’s support of this measure, and for his willingness to listen to, and work with, us on this issue over the past year.” Despite broad bipartisan support last year, a similar Simitian bill was vetoed by Governor Brown in 2011.

Since Brown’s veto last year, however, New York and Virginia have joined the roster of states with breast density notification laws, and two separate studies from the first year of a similar law’s implementation in Connecticut have shown a 100 percent increase in breast cancer detection rates in women with dense breast tissue who had supplementary screenings.

This year, SB 1538 was amended to include notice language negotiated with the Governor’s office and a range of health care interests.

Amy Colton, a Santa Cruz resident, registered nurse and cancer survivor, suggested the idea for the bill in 2011 in Simitian’s annual “There Oughta Be A Law” contest. Colton was never informed of her breast density during years of routine mammograms, and only discovered that she had dense breasts after completing her treatment for breast cancer.

Over the past two years, Colton made numerous trips to the State Capitol to testify in support of the bill. Simitian said Colton’s efforts were “nothing short of heroic. Amy Colton could have walked away from her experience in anger or frustration, but she didn’t. She was determined that other patients would have access to the information she never got. Negociaciones para proteger a los pacientes y proporcionar enfermeras de calidad

Las enfermeras registradas del Hospital Buen Samaritano (Good Samaritan Hospital) y del Centro Médico Regional (Regional Medical Center) protestaron frente al Hospital del Buen Samaritano para hacer público sus esfuerzos de defender a sus pacientes y el futuro de sus hospitales.

“Este es nuestro hospital y nosotros realmente nos importa”, dijo Malinda Markowitz, enfermera de más de 30 años y co-presidente de la Asociación de Enfermeras de California (CNA). “Queremos que el hospital funcione bien y para esto Suceda, necesitan tener beneficios que estimulen a sus enfermeras y protejan a sus pacientes”.

Las enfermeras entonces no reciben tiempo de descanso o tiempos para almuerzos.

Las enfermeras están interesadas en mantener sus beneficios de pensión. Además, están pidiendo que el número de pacientes-enfermeras sean en proporción para dar mejor atención a los pacientes . Les gustaría que el hospital proporcionara el personal adecuado para atender a los pacientes que ya están allí y a los que van llegando.

También están pidiendo enfermera a cargo designada en cada unidad de asignación libre de atención al paciente para permitir la plena coordinación de las necesidades del paciente.

Negotiating to protect patients and provide quality nurses

have been in bargaining of a new contract since May. The current contract is set to expire September 30th.

“Many of these provisions that we have in our contract, we’ve had for over 45 years and we had to fight for them and we have them for a reason,” said Makowitz.

The nurses are interested in keeping their pension benefits. In addition, they are asking for safe RN-topatient staffing ratios. They would like the hospital to provide adequate staff to take care of the patients that are already there and to those being admitted They are also asking for designated charge nurse on every unit, free of patient care assignment, to allow full coordination of patient needs.

Registered nurses (RNs) at Good Samaritan Hospital and Regional Medical Center picketed and rallied outside Good Samaritan Hospital to call public attention to their efforts to stand up for their patients and for the future of their hospitals.

“This is our hospital and we really care,” said Malinda Markowitz, nurse of more than 30 years and co-president of California Nurses Association (CNA).

“We want it to do well, and in order for it to do well, it has to have benefits that are rewarding the nurses and protecting the patients.”

The collective bargaining agreement for the 1,500

RNs, represented by the CNA and National Nurses United, expired on June 30th and has been extended several times.

“Eliminating longstanding healthcare and pension benefits will have a direct impact on the quality of our hospital and our ability to recruit new RNs,” said Dorothy Higgins, a critical care unit RN at Regional Medical Center of San Jose for more than 30 years. “It doesn’t really affect my work ethic because regardless, with or without the pension, I’m going to do a good job because that’s what I’m here for.”

As explained by Markowitz, charge nurses are like the air controllers at the airport. They coordinate everything that is going on in a unit, making sure that the patients have what they need including a nurse. But the hospital is having the charge nurse do multiple things, being at different units, and causing further problems.

Nurses claim that once a unit has a few extra nurses, they are sent to another unit, including charge nurses. Nurses are then not being relieved for breaks or lunches.

“Many nurses are super tired. They come to work.

They don’t have breaks, lunch or dinner. It’s not good for the patients,” said Erly Diaz-Melendez, part time pediatric nurse at Good Samaritan for eight years.

Lastly, they are asking for trained lift teams. They want to be able to safely move and transport patients without harm or injury to the nurses.

This past Sunday my friends and I coincided in having some time off from our busy schedules and—the amazing artist that she is—Yuri was in concert at the Center for the Performing Arts in San Jose, so we decided to attend her concert. Let me just tell you, the show was amazeballs!

If you are familiar with Yuri you must know she is a huge icon in the gay community and just attending her concert was like stepping into gay central. Given that all gay men have a magnificent sense of style (and amazing bodies) you must think this concert was screaming fashion show! Right?

Wrong!! There is only one thing that is certainly true in the last paragraph and it is not in the second sentence. Somehow a lot of straight—and I use this term loosely but I won’t get into that right now—people have this erroneous notion that all gay men know how to dress, are overly flamboyant and promiscuous too.

Well, let me tell you. We are not all the same, as much as a lot of you may think so, and if you would’ve seen the people in attendance at the concert you would know why. I

Now, why am I telling you this? Let’s just put it this way- there is a place and time for everything. Being that it was a concert, the one we were attending, there was a certain etiquette that had to be followed.

Rule #1 Dress to Impress Depending on the venue and type of concert you are attending, there is certain decorum one must follow. If you are attending a ballet, the dress code should be black tie or formal. If it’s a Lady Gaga concert, you can go in costume or casual. But, if you are attending a Yuri concert, semiformal attire is required. Tank tops and caps are NOT considered semiformal.

Rule #2 Stay Current Styles change overtime. They evolve and adapt to current times and so should you.

Don’t get stuck in the nineties. Get yourself familiar with current trends, check them out and see which ones are right for you. Avoid running the risk of looking like a walking Polaroid.

Rule #3 Wear Fitted Clothes By fitted, I mean they contour your body in the right places. Don’t try to squeeze your

Set in today’s San Francisco, it explores the benefits and risks of tattoo removal for gang members thru one man’s determination to reunite his family after surviving civil war in El Salvador, immigration, deportation, prison and street violence.

PLACAS (barrio slang: a code word for graffiti tags, a nickname or body tattoos) is a stage drama about family, transformation and redemption that focuses on a Salvadoran former gang member in the barrio

PLACAS focuses on inter-generational relationships between young men and their fathers and uses the metaphor of tattoo removal as a way of moving forward and as a path to a possible solution.

PLACAS stars Ric Salinas as Salvadoran immigrant Fausto Carbajal, a now middle-aged ex-gang member recently released after nine years in prison.

As a requirement of his parole Fausto must remove the tattoos that mark him as a member of his gang.

Wearied by what has been a lifetime of violence, he accepts the terms. He is determined to reunite his family, traumatized by three decades of war, forced migrations and street crime. He returns to San Francisco to live with his mother, a war refugee, and hopes to reunite with his ex-partner,

Claudia and their now teenaged son, Edgar. Fausto visits Claudia and Edgar. But Edgar, who has not seen his father for most of his life, resents Fausto and displays disturbing character traits that remind Fausto of himself in his youth.

It is clear that the reunion will be difficult. Fausto realizes that his son is in danger of being initiated into a rival gang when Edgar is arrested for carrying a gun to school and placed on probationary house arrest. Fausto attempts to persuade Edgar against joining the gang and offers to move the family out of the neighborhood, but Edgar runs away. Fausto must find Edgar before the police do. His process of transformation is both physically and emotionally painful, but can he save himself, and is it enough and in time to save his son?

ESPECTACULAR CONCIERTO DE YURI Rudy Durán Especial para El Observador

Todo un éxito resulto el concierto de Yuri el pasado 23 de septiembre en el Center for the Performing Arts de la ciudad de San José, ubicado en el centro de esta ciudad.

Fue a eso de las 8:30 de la noche que comenzó el espectáculo en donde Yuri hizo su aparición con una indumentaria muy moderna, un poco tarde para la hora establecida pero entendiendo que solo ella y sus bailarines sostendrían la función toda la noche es entendible el pequeño retraso, ya que para la instalación del equipo, luces, sonido y en fin todo el escenario se requiere de tiempo y dedicación.

Un local casi lleno en su totalidad fue quien recibió y disfruto de la noche, que entre canciones tradicionales y ya conocidas de los años ochentas corearon y cantaron quienes s e hicieron presentes en este evento.

Durante su show, Yurii llevaba un traje que se iluminó.

Como preámbulo a cada canción Yuri presento una proyección alusiva a tal interpretación describiendo con imágenes el contenido y con mucha calidad y muy buena tomas, esto aunado a las luces y el sonido que se uso en el escenario resulto del completo agrado de los asistentes que demostraron una vez mas que los éxitos de los ochentas están todavía muy presentes en muchas personas que en su mayoría crecieron escuchando estas canciones.

Algo que no es muy común es esta clase de espectáculos es que Yuri uso un vestuario diferente para cada canción y siempre sorprendiendo a la audiencia con cada uno de ellos, todos muy modernos y coloridos pero el que se llevo la noche, fue un vestido forrado en su totalidad con flores de apariencia natural que vistió para interpretar “maldita primavera” Cabe hacer mención que la comunidad gay en gran cantidad estuvo presente en este evento en donde le demostraban su amor a Yuri coreando “Yuri para Reina Gay, Yuri para Reina Gay”.

Acuerdan NFL y árbitros nuevo contrato por ocho temporadas Notimex Nueva York

Tras largas horas negociaciones, este 26 de septiembre el comisionado Roger Goodell anunció que la Liga Nacional de Futbol Americano (NFL) y el Sindicato de Árbitros (NFLRA) llegaron a un acuerdo y firmaron contrato por ocho temporadas.

De esta manera, concluye el paro de árbitros que duró tres fechas de la campaña regular, en las cuales los árbitros suplentes se vieron superados y en ocasiones incapaces de controlar a jugadores y entrenadores.

De acuerdo a declaraciones hechas por el comisionado de la NFL, “este arreglo por ocho temporadas

es el más extenso que se ha firmado con los árbitros en la historia de la liga”.

Además, señaló que “los réferis regulares regresarán de inmediato al trabajo.

Goodell resaltó que “queremos tener a los mejores árbitros del deporte estadounidense en el emparrillado”.

Por su parte, los árbitros, por voz de Ed Hochuli, se declararon listos para regresar a la actividad, “nos perdimos la pretemporada y eso ya no se puede remediar, pero hemos trabajado muy duro en estas semanas, trabajado sobre las 18 reglas, viendo hora y horas de videos y puedo decir que estamos listos para regresar”.

California Begins Gathering Data on School Technology percent did not respond.

Regarding the number of administrators, technical understanding and support issues, those responding to the survey expressed the greatest level of concern for having a sufficient number of technology support staff, having test administrators with sufficient technical understanding to support online testing and with providing all appropriate training for test administrators.

Forty-two percent of California schools participated in the technology survey of which there are to be six data extractions between 2012 and 2014 in a nationwide effort to gauge readiness for new online assessments aligned to the Common Core State Standards, prompting State Schools Superintendent Tom Torlakson to urge more schools to take part in the future.

“We know our schools already face enormous dayto-day challenges—but we also need to understand what issues they face as we move to online testing over the next few years,” Torlakson said. “We know this effort will take time, energy and resources— all of which are in short supply. That’s why we need the broadest participation possible in this survey, so that we provide as much assistance as possible to schools as they make the transition to 21stcentury testing.”

The survey, known as the Technology Readiness Tool, asked schools administrators about their type of computers, computer operating systems, memory size, monitor display size, screen resolution, and Internet bandwidth. The survey also asked them to gauge concerns about the number of test administrators, technical understanding to support online testing, training, and support staff.

The relatively small response rate suggests that the state should use the findings as baseline rather than drawing conclusions about the results. In addition, it should be noted that the data included in the survey are unaudited and submitted voluntarily, and are subject to frequent change as schools change their use of technology frequently.

Among California schools that responded to the first nationwide survey: • Technology devices: About 600,000 devices were reported.

• Operating systems: 74.7 percent of the devices used a Windows operating system, while 23.7 percent used Mac. • Memory capacity: 75.5 percent had 1 gigabyte or greater, 21.3 percent had less than 1 gigabyte, and 3.2 percent left this field blank.

• Internet browser: 60.5 percent use Internet Explorer, 15 percent use Safari, 15.2 percent use another Internet browser, and 9.3 percent did not respond.

• Wired or wireless connection to the Internet: 48.1 percent use wireless as their primary means, 29.6 percent do not, and 22.3 percent did not respond.

• Device types: 54.3 percent were desktops, 15.4 percent laptops, 4.5 percent notebooks, 2.8 percent tablets, 2.9 percent thin clients, 0.7 percent other, and 19.4

“While it’s obviously too early to draw any firm conclusions, these initial findings suggest that training and technical support will be important areas to address—perhaps just as important as providing schools the computers and the bandwidth to carry out online testing itself,” Torlakson said.

Torlakson said the work of his Education Technology Task Force, as well as continuing to advocate for additional state and federal resources for education technology, would help address the needs identified by the survey.

California is part of the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium of 25 states that are working to create a common assessment system nationwide for mathematics and Englishlanguage arts. The assessments would be aligned with the Common Core State Standards.

As part of the adoption of Common Core and involvement in Smarter Balanced, California is moving toward administering standardized tests to students on computers by 2014-15, instead of on paper. Smarter Balanced is helping its member states assess the currently available technology at schools by partnering with other education consortia and technology groups that together developed the Technology Readiness Tool.
