OUR NATION'S DEMOCRACY IS WORTH DEFENDING FROM ALL ADVERSARIES, BOTH FOREIGN AND DOMESTIC

On September 11, 2001 four commercial planes were hijacked

by Al-Qaeda extremist agents. One plane was deliberately crashed into one of the Twin Towers of New York City's World Trade Center; a second plane was crashed into the other tower; the third plane was crashed into the Pentagon Building; and the fourth hijacked plane, with crew and passengers (40 individuals) aboard crashed into a Pennsylvanian field. This Flight 93 group decided to fight back; they overwhelmed the AlQaeda hijackers aboard; this fourth hijacked plane never made it to its designated target (White House? or U.S. Congressional Building?).

Recently a memorial was dedicated in honor of these 40 patriots who decided to resist the hijackers resulting in thwarting their plans to crash into a target in the Washington, D.C. area. These 40 patriots gave up their lives when Flight 93 crashed into that field in Pennsylvania.

A creative 93 ft. tall “Voice Tower” monument will have 40 wind chimes, each chime representing the spiritual voice of each individual who resisted.

spelled al-Qaida, al-Qæda and sometimes al-Qa'ida. It is a militant Sunni Islamist multinational organization founded in 1988[31] by Osama bin Laden, Abdullah Azzam, and several other Arab volunteers during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.”

“Al-Qaeda operates as a network of Islamic extremists and Salafist jihadists. The organization has been designated as a terrorist group by the United Nation's Security Council, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), the European Union, the United States, the United Kingdom, Russia, India, and various other countries.”

“Al-Qaeda has mounted attacks on civilian and military targets in various countries, including the 1998 US embassy bombings (Kenya), the 9-11 attacks, and the 2002 Bali bombings. The United States government responded to the 9- 11 attacks by launching the "War on Terror", which sought to undermine Al- Qaeda and its allies.” (Source: Wikipedia) America and its allies initiated the “War on Terrorism” right after this 9/11 incident. Today, 17 years later, America is still providing air support and strategy training.

America is tired of this terrorist war and the burdensome 'wartime economic resources' being expended to maintain our nation's security.

If any changes are to be made in this nation's leadership, they will emerge from CA, which has opposed Trump Administration's leadership about this “War on Terrorism”. These changes should include several public policy issues: Immigration, global climate changes, rebuild/repair/improve this nation's infrastructure, support public education, protect

the environment, imposition of trade tariffs, and acting as a team member on foreign affairs and trade agreements rather than 'go it alone'. Trump's dealings with North Korea and Iran regarding nuclear armaments has trashed agreements still supported by America's Allies. His admiration of Russia's Vladimir Putin and other autocratic leaders is in total opposition to the stance of America and its allies prior to his installation as president of the USA. Trump's Administration has been destructive of world-wide trust and integrity essential to promoting peace and prosperity in a global free trade economy. If the constitutional 'checks and balances' are to be restored, then both the Republican Party dominated Senate and House need to be flipped from red to blue.

It begins here in CA where seven Republican members of Congress must not be re-elected. This is where the fight begins, right here in California's 5th largest global economy sustained by its very diverse population.

Racism, white supremacy, misogyny (abuse of women) and xenophobia (fear of outsiders) must not be practiced in CA. In addition, wealth distribution must be redirected to enable ordinary folks to own their homes, to have a living wage, have access to education, universal health care programs, and to re-establish values, trust, and integrity - all needed to live in a civilized community wherein no fear nor anxiety exist.

And if we want a judicial system which deals fairly with all of us, then the U.S. Supreme Court vacancies must be filled with appointees who are not beholden to any special interest.

the work needed to establish a new social and economic equilibrium wherein we use those resources provided by Divine Providence to care for “We, The People” rather than those special interest who profit from violence and war.

Barack Obama's plunge into this 2018 midterm elections will its central purpose only if all of us vote for Democrats in these critical House races - especially its Latino millennial vote. Many of these millennials are new to politics, but millennials did support (and vote) in 2012 Elections for the former president.

If “We, The People” want to live in peace, in human dignity, then we must do the necessary work needed, beginning with having all our votes counted. Democracy requires our participation. Those of you who did not vote in November 2016 helped elect Trump as President; Now vote to recapture governance with reasonable 'checks and balances' and with the use of our national resources to do the greater good. Special interests depend upon you not getting off your couch to vote. Do that much in your own best interest, safety, security. As a constituent who votes YOU BELONG HERE. After all it was 'us, who were grunts', who defended America; who worked in the factories and fields, and who Made America Great. America is good to all when we all participate by voting.

Today they must support those Democratic candidates who received Obama's endorsement and who, once elected must vote with integrity and credibility on all necessary progressive legislation which serves the needs of “We, The People”. Divine Providence did not intend for the resources of this nation (and its world) to end up being the property owned by a privileged few oligarchists, the top 0.1%! To stop that trend, ALL OF US MUST VOTE ON TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 6TH. “If we don't step up, things can get worse,” Obama told cheering activists who gathered in a crowded ballroom at a rally for seven Democrats running in Republican-held House districts. “In two months, we have a chance to restore some sanity in our politics.”

GOD knows humanity is capable of sanity. We will be identified not by who we are, but by what we do. Let us all vote this coming 2018 Midterm Election: Tuesday, November 6, 2018. Submit your 'Vote by Mail' ballot early as its postage is paid by the County of Santa Clara.

Our nation needs all of us to do

Special interests know that which is why they do things to keep our vote's voice silent. Each of us is very important in foiling their schemes to control this nation in an authoritarian way - which is totally un-American. Do your patriotic duty by voting to redirect this nation's public policies.

Stopping their plans is a victory for American ideals.

Es natural que con motivo del Mes de la Herencia Hispana renovemos la pregunta sobre nuestra identidad como latinos, sobre las características qué nos definen, los ejemplos qué nos inspiran, los valores y principios que moldean nuestra conducta y los sueños que nos empujan al porvenir.

Desde el siglo pasado el filósofo José Vasconcelos apreciaba en nosotros los iberoamericanos la esencia de una “raza cósmica”, un crisol genético de individuos de todos los orígenes raciales y étnicos, unidos física y espiritualmente hacia un destino común.

Llama por ello la atención que la mitad de los latinos que vivimos en los Estados Unidos no nos sentimos ni latinos ni hispanos, según un sondeo del Centro Pew. Nos sentimos mexicanos o puertorriqueños o salvadoreños o cubanos. Otros preferimos ser llamados, con toda razón, americanos.

También sorprende un dato dramático: Nuestra hispanidad, como quiera que la definamos, se está diluyendo. Las generaciones con mayor antigüedad en Estados Unidos están distanciándose de su identidad latina.

Alejadas de sus raíces y tradiciones, más de 5 millones de personas de origen hispano en este país ya no se reconocen como latinos.

Por ello el Mes de la Herencia Hispana de ser

una oportunidad inmejorable de encontrar todo aquello que nos une, que nos define, que nos hace parte de una comunidad excepcional y única. No sólo por nuestros antepasados o nuestro idioma, sino por nuestro carácter, nuestros valores y anhelos.

Ante las caracterizaciones prejuiciosas con las que nos quieren dibujar los racistas y xenófobos, podemos responder con modelos de latinos y latinas que encarnan lo que realmente somos: una comunidad luchadora y honesta, unida por el sentido de familia, por la convicción de que el trabajo dignifica y por el optimismo de un futuro mejor para nuestros hijos.

El pasado fin de semana tuve la oportuni-

dad se atestiguar emocionalmente lo que significa ser latino. Cinco mil almas latinas se fundieron en un foro de Virginia en el aprecio, no sólo a un artista excepcional, sino a un ser humano ejemplar que encarna para muchos un modelo de hispanidad: Chayanne.

Por su trabajo humanitario y filantrópico hacia los damnificados y vulnerables, por su talento generoso y humilde, por la sonrisa perpetua que denota su optimismo de vida, no hace falta ir más lejos para encontrar en este puertorriqueño universal una definición tangible de hispanidad.

Violencia en las escuelas: una lección que ningún niño debería aprender

no fuese intolerable. Los insultos, las humillaciones, las peleas, ¿serían tolerables en los centros de trabajo o en otros espacios en los que conviven adultos?

No olvidemos tampoco que el comportamiento de niños, niñas y adolescentes muchas veces refleja patrones de violencia que los niños ven en la conducta de los adultos, en la familia, en la vida pública, incluso en los medios de comunicación. Patrones de conducta que más veces de las que pensamos sirven de ejemplo, y muchas veces de excusa, a los acosadores más jóvenes.

Otro factor relevante es el ciberbullying, que amplía el impacto del acoso escolar mediante las redes sociales, así como el espacio y el tiempo en el que la víctima lo sufre: más allá del centro educativo, más allá del horario escolar, más allá del suceso concreto, ya que permite registrarlo y difundirlo.

Gustavo Suárez Pertierra, presidente del Comité Español de UNICEF EFE La noticia de finales del mes de agosto del suicidio de un niño de nueve años en Estados Unidos, pocos días después de anunciar en el colegio su homosexualidad, es un dramático ejemplo de cuáles pueden ser las consecuencias del acoso escolar.

Esta y otras duras situaciones constituyen ejemplos muy graves de las consecuencias del acoso entre los propios niños y niñas.

La violencia en la escuela y sus inmediaciones tiene otras muchas y dramáticas dimensiones: desde los ataques directos a las escuelas o a los alumnos en zonas de conflicto (más de 500 verificados en este año) o el castigo físico en los centros educativos -aún consentido en muchos países del mundo-, hasta los tiroteos que se producen en los mismos.

Además, la violencia hace ineficiente todo el sistema educativo, en términos de aprendizaje y también económicos. El coste de la violencia contra los niños en la escuela sumaría 7 billones de dólares anuales, lo que socava gravemente las inversiones realizadas en educación, en salud o en primera infancia.

Los datos sobre violencia en las aulas y en su entorno, publicados en el informe Violencia en las escuelas: una lección diaria en el marco de la iniciativa de UNICEF ·STOPViolenciaInfantil, reflejan que la violencia no es exclusiva de ningún país ni de ninguna región: la mitad de estudiantes de entre 13 y 15 años, unos 150 millones, declaran haber sido objeto de acoso escolar o haber participado en peleas en el centro o sus alrededores.

Para la realización de los derechos de los niños a la educación y al desarrollo es clave que las escuelas sean lugares seguros. Pero también es fundamental para el cumplimiento de los derechos a la protección y a la participación infantil.

España es el tercero -entre los 37 países de Europa, EEUU y Canadá- con menor índice de violencia en las escuelas entre estudiantes de 13 a 15 años. Sin embargo, el 16,7 % de niños entre 13 y 14 años ha manifestado haber sufrido acoso escolar en los últimos dos meses, y 1 de cada tres (30,4%) ha estado involucrado en una pelea durante el último año.

Cuando el centro educativo se convierte en un lugar inseguro se desencadenan una serie de consecuencias fatales para sus alumnos: afecta a su salud física y mental, disminuye su autoestima, se resienten sus relaciones personales, empeoran los resultados educativos y aumenta la falta

En el caso concreto de la violencia entre iguales y el acoso escolar, demasiados factores contribuyen a que este fenómeno sea complejo de erradicar. Todavía permanece en el imaginario cultural la dañina frase "son cosas de niños", como si cualquier tipo de violencia

El colegio o el instituto son lugares en los que se produce este tipo de violencia entre los niños, pero lo más importante es que, junto con la familia, son los mejores espacios para luchar contra ella, para prevenirla, para cambiar esta tendencia nociva a corto, medio y largo plazo.

Para trabajar con las potenciales víctimas, con los agresores y con los testigos, el papel de los centros y el profesorado es clave, pero también lo es el de los propios niños y adolescentes, que deben ser protagonistas principales de los programas, procesos y protocolos que abordan la violencia en las aulas, y también protagonistas de la educación para la paz y los derechos humanos que tiene que volver a ser una parte fundamental del currículum escolar.

SEPTEMBER 14 - 20, 2018 Este debe ser quizás el único aspecto del ámbito educativo en el que se deba promover la intolerancia: la intolerancia contra la violencia en cualquiera de sus formas, ya sea física o psicológica, presencial o través de la tecnología.

Pero además de los centros, las familias y los propios alumnos son claves la legislación y las políticas públicas. En estos días de vuelta al colegio conviene recordar que en demasiados países aún está permitido por la ley el castigo físico en las escuelas, o que, en el caso concreto de España, pese a las reiteradas peticiones de Naciones Unidas y los compromisos públicos, la aprobación de una Ley Integral para la Erradicación de la Violencia contra la contra la Infancia, avanza lentamente.

El compromiso del Gobierno español es presentar un proyecto de Ley al Congreso en 2019. Nos parece muy importante que se apruebe en esta legislatura ya que contribuiría a hacer que todos los espacios en los que están los niños sean más seguros, a promover y dotar de recursos a los programas educativos para prevenir el acoso escolar y otros tipos de violencia, a que estas situaciones en la infancia dejen de considerarse una violencia "menor", a evitar que los niños sean considerados -demasiadas veces- testigos menos fiables que los adultos, o a que dejen de tolerarse socialmente determinados niveles de violencia en el entorno escolar o familiar.

La escuela debe ser el lugar de muchas lecciones, algunas académicas y otras vitales, pero la de la violencia es precisamente aquella que no debe estar presente de ningún modo.

How to Teach Kids to be Savvy Consumers

The following tips from your BBB will help children become successful participants in the marketplace:

• Talk about ads. It can be very difficult for children to understand what is, and isn’t an advertisement.

These days, ads are embedded into apps and games, and their favorite video bloggers are being paid to promote certain products (and aren’t disclosing it). The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) “has a long history of protecting children from unfair and deceptive marketing practices”, but bad ads can still slip through the cracks, and kids need help. When you’re with a child and see an advertisement, talk to them about the ad and help them think critically about it. What is it selling? How is it being sold? How does it make you feel? This will help them recognize ads and lessen their effect. It’s also smart to teach kids to look out for deceptive advertising techniques. The BBB AdTruth website, bbb.org/adtruth, has great resources to help people of all ages learn about advertising, report bad advertising, and think before responding impulsively to an advertised offer.

Teaching children to be wary of advertisements at an early age is vital to ensure they’re able to identify

what is legitimate and what could be a scam. As technology continues to evolve, so too will the ads.

One of the best ways to teach children is to engage them, which is why the Better Business Bureau is encouraging parents to have an open dialogue and discuss what they’re seeing.

• Earning money. It’s a good idea to open up a savings account for a child to help them learn about interest and the “free” money that they can earn from saving. TO PREVENT YOUTH OPIOID MISUSE, MANY STATES ARE MORE EFFECTIVELY REGULATING PRESCRIPTIONS

ANDRA WILKINSON, HANNAH WINSLOW Child Trends The majority of people who misuse drugs start before their 18th birthday. Furthermore, the risk of addiction increases when drug use starts in adolescence, making this period a key prevention window. Leftover prescription pills, either from one’s own prescription or those of family or friends, are the dominant source of opioid pain relievers for adolescents who misuse them.[1] By the end of high school, approximately 13 percent of teens will have misused opioid pain relievers (i.e., used them without prescription, in a manner not prescribed, or to get high). Strategies that address adolescent misuse of prescription opioid pain relievers represent a critical component of any successful effort to address the opioid crisis.

A national study of 12th graders found that, among those with no prior history of drug use and strong disapproval of illegal drug use, a prescription for opioids in high school was associated with a threefold increased risk of later opioid misuse. Opioid pain reliever misuse can substantially increase the risk of initiating heroin use. As such, decreasing excessive opioid prescribing and lowering the number of leftover pills are important strategies for preventing opioid pain reliever misuse—and, potentially, later heroin or fentanyl (a more powerful and lethal synthetic opioid) use among youth.

Adolescent outreach and education is necessary but not sufficient for prevention. To prevent adolescent misuse, many states have implemented policies designed to limit unnecessary prescribing.

Recent legislative efforts have included the following strategies:

flooding the community with excess pills prone to misuse. State regulations can make improper prescribing less likely, but, as of June 2018, only 12 states had laws regulating pain clinics.

Despite their effectiveness at reducing misuse, policies targeting the supply of prescription opioids have met varying degrees of resistance. In recent years, opioid prescribing has dropped.

Teen prescription opioid and heroin use is now at a historic low, fueling concerns that these new policies may not be necessary, and that poorly implemented policies can—and are—harming terminal patients and those with chronic pain.

Furthermore, increased regulation of prescription opioids generally correlates with upticks in heroin use. Ohio, the state with the second-highest opioid overdose death rate, has in recent years passed legislation that includes all three of the previously mentioned policy approaches. In subsequent years, the state saw opioid prescribing fall 20 percent, while its overall overdose death rate continued to rise as the proportion of deaths due to heroin and fentanyl increased.

However, the relationship observed between decreasing supplies of prescription opioids and increases in

For example, one clinic prescribed almost 3 million opioid doses to only 3,000 patients,

heroin use is complex, and research shows that the overall increase in heroin use began long before efforts to decrease opioid prescribing. For this reason, lawmakers should consider ways to expand treatment while taking careful steps to limit supply, as confirmed by a recent predictive model. Although prescribing has dropped overall, it still varies considerably across states; for example, certain states have prescribing rates more than twice as high as their neighbors. Some researchers also assert that state policies are important for continued declines in prescription opioid use among youth.

Policies regulating access to prescription opioids are certainly not a cure-all, but they do provide an opportunity for policymakers to intervene before youth addiction begins. As prescription pain relievers continue to be one of the most common drugs of choice for first-time users in adolescence, state policy initiatives to reduce excessive prescribing may be a powerful tool for lawmakers. However, to ensure that prescription opioid regulation corresponds with decreases in overdose deaths, policies limiting supply must not harm chronic pain patients and must go hand-in-hand with expanded and comprehensive addiction treatment.

• Limiting the number of doses given in an initial prescription for acute pain. As the number of days covered by an opioid prescription increases,so do the chances of misuse (although further research is needed). As of early April 2018, 19 states[2] had some limit on opioid prescribing. • Assisting physicians with monitoring the number of prescriptions given to an individual. Prescription drug monitoring programs (PDMPs) are electronic databases that allow clinicians to know whether patients have already received opioids from another provider. While 49 states have some type of prescription drug monitoring law, only 36 states require clinicians to consult the PDMP before prescribing. A study of mandatory PDMP use among dentists (the top prescribers of opioids to adolescents) found that prescribing amounts fell by 78 percent in three months once PDMP consultation became a requirement.

“We’re grateful to GoFundMe for creating a platform for people to contribute and to those who have stepped up to help Dreamers in need. We encourage everyone who

Additionally, as part of the effort to support Dreamers, the Direct Impact Fund, an independent, registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization established the ‘Protect DACA Youth Fund.’ This fund collects and distributes the money raised to existing GoFundMe campaigns created by or for Dreamers raising money to pay for a DACA renewal application. Today, the Direct Impact Fund has announced the first round of grants, helping 12 Dreamers reach their goal by fully funding their DACA applications.

Poll workers will receive a stipend of up to $200 for their services, with a bonus for being bilingual. Training is provided and classes are filling up.

SIERRA & TIERRA: La Gran Purga de Votantes

Como país estamos retrocediendo hacia la era de Jim Crow, en los años 1940 y 50, cuando para la gente de color, votar era más una victoria que un derecho constitucional.

Hoy, en los Estados Unidos de Donald Trump, a solo tres meses de las cruciales elecciones generales del 6 de noviembre, nos enteramos de que antes de los comicios de 2016, los estados purgaron a unos 16 millones de votantes de las listas electorales del país.

Según un estudio del Brennan Center for Justice (BCJ), estos votantes purgados —en su mayoría gente humilde o miembros de minorías— fueron víctimas de inexactitudes e incluso decisiones ilegales de la burocracia estatal. El reporte enfatiza que entre 2014 y 2016, el incremento en la purga de votantes fue de un 33% con respecto al periodo anterior.

Las burocracias estatales solo pueden eliminar nombres de la listas electorales en caso de que la persona sea menor de 18 años, no sea ciudadana, si ha cometido algún crimen mayor, si es enferma mental, si se ha mudado o si ha fallecido. Pero varios estados usaron criterios draconianos para eliminar a votantes de las listas, como no haber votado en una elección o no haber respondido a una notificación por correo.

Otro factor que incidió en este escándalo, agrega el BCJ, fue purgar las listas electorales tres meses antes del día de elecciones, sin haber mandado notificación alguna a los votantes afectados.

Según el reporte, Florida, Nueva York, Carolina del Norte y Virginia han realizado purgas ilegales en los últimos cinco años, y cuatro estados más — Alabama, Arizona, Indiana y Maine— han violado la ley federal en la eliminación de votantes.

La purga ilegal es solo una forma de supresión de voto. Las leyes de identificación del votante (voter ID laws) exigen presentar formas de

Suzanne Potter California News Service SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Groups fighting to keep California's health care system on track are calling on Gov. Jerry Brown to sign Senate Bill 910 which would limit short-term insurance plans.

The Trump administration finalized new rules in August to allow so-called skinny plans to remain in force for three years, claiming it will increase competition and offer a lower-cost alternative. But State Sen. Ed Hernandez, who authored the bill, called the plans "junk insurance" that will rob consumers of important protections.

"They don't realize that they can get kicked off with a pre-existing condition.

There's no max amount of out-of-pocket expenses, so if they get some kind of devastating health condition, it could lead them into bankruptcy," Hernandez said.

"So I don't think it's in the best interest of the state of California."

The short-term plans are exempt from the requirements of the Affordable Care Act, so many don't cover mental health, maternity or pediatric care.

Supporters of SB 910 argue the plans could lure young, healthy people out of the Covered California insurance market.

The result would be more older, sicker people in the risk pool, which would drive premiums sky-high.

Brown has until September 30 to sign the bill, veto it, or let it become law without his signature.

Brown also is considering a bill that would limit the sale of association health plans, one that would prevent eligibility restrictions requiring Medi-Cal recipients to work, and another to safeguard ACA rules that require health plans to spend 80 percent of their premiums on health care. Hernandez said President Donald Trump is playing politics with people's lives by undermining the ACA. "I think it's political sabotage to destabilize the market. I think he's playing to the base," Hernandez said. "At the end of the day, this is a system that's working, and I think it's just pure politics to try to repeal it."

Republicans have tried and failed several times to repeal the ACA. However, they did pass the Tax Bill, which removed the federal mandate to buy insurance.

Gary Golio shares his vision in bringing Carlos Santana’s childhood to life in a new children’s book

What is your personal relationship with the stories you tell and how you focus on these people that embody these qualities you feel are good to have people learn about?

[Rudy] said, “Gary, Carlos has a great story, you should check it out”. And so I did, I researched this, probably took me about a year to write this whole thing from beginning to end. And I wrote it because of Rudy, as a gift, because I know there’s no book on Santana for kids, at least no picture book. I wanted him to illustrate it because he loves the guy, Carlos is an inspiration for Rudy. I want to see his art out there as an inspiration for kids.

You know I was a kid who was an only child, Italian-American. I never wanted for anything, we always had food. My parents both left high school right after Pearl Harbor and my dad went into the Navy, and my mother went into a war factory and they worked very hard all their lives, nobody expected a great deal from me. In my town there was a good deal of prejudice. Italian-Americans were kind of on the lower rung.

Arturo Hilario El Observador Carlos Santana is known the world over for his musical rock stylings infused with Latin sounds, but few know how it came about that a young Mexican man came to San Francisco to play music. In fact, in Mexico as a child Santana was trained by his father to be a classical mariachi musician, but this did not take, as he became immersed in the world of American blues, jazz and rock at a young age.

Eventually his group, Santana, would land a coveted spot in the legendary inaugural Woodstock concert in 1969. The rest is rock history.

Gary Golio is the author of several children's books which deal with reflecting and teaching about the lives of impactful musicians. In his most recent work he tackles the life of the aforementioned Carlos Santana, bringing it to life with the artwork of Rudy Gutierrez, who as a collaborator with Santana has painted concert backdrops as well as the the cover to Santana’s 2002 Shaman album. The book, titled CARLOS SANTANA Sound of the Heart, Song of the World, reflects upon Santana’s childhood experience and showcases the first glimpses of the musician we know of today.

Recently we connected with Golio to go over his past works on books about Jimi Hendrix and John Coltrane, and how he's able to weave complexities of these musicians lives into stories for children without losing the emotion and truth.

How did you get interested in art and writing? Where did that influence or want come from?

I was an artist for many years, I used to make my living as a landscape painter and I had always wanted to be an archaeologist...but I became an artist instead. I kinda feel like I’m digging in the lives of people that I really think have something to offer, people I admire. So i’m kind of a literary archaeologist now. I was a therapist for many years. I worked with people, especially teens that had addiction troubles all across the spectrum, you name it - white, hispanic, black, of all types- kids and adults.

You know the saddest kids I saw were not the ones who were poor or necessarily had some bad things happen to them but when I asked the certain kids, “What do you want to do when you grow up, what’s your dream?”, and the saddest kids were the ones who actually could not tell me anything that they wanted to do with their lives. So the books are kind of about me presenting people that I think embody good qualities, that are exciting. They’re usually musicians, and of course they go from rock, to jazz to blues. It’s all about the foundation of roots. Of these amazing people so the kids can look into these books and kind of use them as a roadmap to say, “How do I get good at something?”, “How do I get a passion, how does that help me in my life?”. My wife began by writing children’s books herself and she was kind of my inspiration. My first book about Jimi Hendrix was about his early years and so I’ve kind of used that model with the other books, to see the roots of somebody that

I always had interests and I had a grandmother who really kind of emphasized education and I was always watching these movies with her. Like from the 30’s and 40’s and the movies that interested me most were movies about people who had done interesting things. Like Vincent Van Gogh, “Lust for Life”, or the movie, “Spirit of St. Louis” with Jimmy Stewart about Lindberg. People who kind of really gave themselves over to something.

My father was an amateur artist he was very gifted but he never graduated from college or high school. He did a lot of notso-wonderful jobs for the rest of his life, he always worked hard, he was an honest man, but they finally gave me to believe that I could do something that I wanted to do. They supported me, I went to school as an artists and after I became a therapist is when I started thinking about the lives of these teenagers and helping them, to kind of find things in their lives, roots, in their family, or in things that they loved and enjoyed doing. To give them a lifeline that they could go into their adulthood with some kind of a “life preserver”” that would carry them through and keep them rooted and keep them on track.

So I believe in stories, I believe that stories have a lot of power. Kids love Star Wars, or they love Superman. Whatever it is, the reason we love those stories even as adults is because great stories are inspiring. So I’m trying to tell great stories.

Why did you choose to write the Carlos Santana book, and what kind of research did it entail?

Well the reason I wrote the book was because Rudy Gutierrez, he is Puerto Rican-American, he and I did a book called “Spirit Seeker”, John Coltrane’s musical journey, about the great jazzsaxophonists and his spiritual changes in his life. Rudy did the Shaman album cover for Santana a number of years ago and his work is beautiful. And he was telling me one day that Carlos- after woodstock in ‘69, where Santana the band had their debut, there was this album, Abraxas and it’s an amazing cover. When Rudy saw that as a kid he decided he wanted to be an

I read a lot of books, some of them that are appropriate for kids are in the bibliography in the book. I probably read 10 books and god knows how many articles. The beauty of YouTube is that you can go and listen Carlos interviewed like a hundred times by all these people, and listen to him speak, and listen to his words and his stories. I wanted the book to be truthful, there’s no fantasy, I didn’t make anything up. I didn’t put any dialogue from when he's a kid, unless he said something, and he does, there are one or two sentences in there, nothing is made up.

It’s a matter of listening to a lot of the music, to get to the spirit, listening to mariachi music which had a big impact on him, and just kind of soaking up Mexican culture. So it’s not just reading books about Carlos, it’s also about getting a feel of where he came from, how he felt to be this very poor boy in Autlán de Navarro in Jalisco, and then writing a story which is my interpretation of all of the facts. It’s kind of like, if Carlos does a cover of Jimi Hendrix, he’s doing an interpretation, and I’m doing an interpretation of Carlos’ life based on the facts. But it’s my romantic interpretation of Carlos’ early life.

Is there anything that was especially interesting to learn about Carlos in your research?

There was something that was personally important to me, and I made it the core of the story which is the relationship between a boy that adores his father as I adored my father when I was a boy, and then what happens when you become like thirteen or fourteen and you start butting heads.

That happens to a lot of boys and their fathers and most fathers love their children and want their sons to be successful, to be good at something, they want to be proud of them, but usually you want to tell them what to do. Most boys don’t want to be told what to do, I know I didn’t. I loved my father, I admired him, but he worried about me and he didn't’ want me to make mistakes and he was always telling me to do this, but not to do that. We had our troubles, when I was the same age as Carlos was when he had his troubles.

So, I wanted to get at the core of what was going on, which was on the outside fathers and sons often have these troubles but at the core there's this love that’s always

Carlos’ father was very disappointed when he didn’t become the third generation mariachi violinist but that wasn’t for him, and dad accepted it to the point where finally he sends Carlos this used guitar back from Tijuana and Carlos starts on his own path.

And that takes a lot for a grown man, a father, to finally let go and say, “You know what, I’m going to support my kid and do what he wants to do as long as it’s a good thing.” When I dug into the story that was the thing that really got to me. The tug of war between what dad thought was a good idea, and what carlos in his heart knew that he had to do for himself.

After reading excerpts from your other children’s works, I was wondering how you deal with translating some of these darker themes and serious emotions into something a child could digest or understand?

The book on John Coltrane that Rudy and I did, it’s for slightly older kids, let’s say 8-12 instead of second and third grade, so it deals with John Coltrane’s early life, a boy growing up in Jim Crow South in North Carolina, and the prejudice and the racism. All the men in his family die within a year when he’s a boy. He becomes very depressed, at the same time a minister starts a community band, and he gets his first instrument, and his life changes. But, he becomes involved with drinking, he becomes a heroin user, how do you tell kids about stuff like this?

Even though the ending is a good one.

Because of his spirituality John Coltrane was able to recover, to let go, to become sober and to become a great musician who actually interestingly, Carlos Santana, of all the people he adores one at the very top is John Coltrane, because of his spiritual connections. I think you can tell kids just about anything if you tell them in the right way, and you use the right words. You don’t give a kid a checkbook or a driver’s license when they’re eight years old because they’re not ready. You don’t tell them certain things until they can handle it but if you use the right language I believe in the power of children to deal with heavy stuff.

You don’t want to depress them, you don’t want to traumatize them, there are books for children about war, about Adolf Hitler and the Nazis, and if you look at the language in those books, usually they’re told in the context of a fictional characters’ life. The kids get really interested in what’s happening to them, you don’t have to tell them everything, they’re seeing it. It doesn’t have to be gruesome. There’s a part in the Santana book where he goes to a cafe with his father, a cantina for the first time and he was expecting this to be a wonderful, brightly lit happy place and it turns out to be a grungy, crappy little cafe where there’s sawdust on the floor, and there’s cigarette butts burnt into the table, and the men

EL OBSERVADOR | www.el-observador.com are drinking, they wanna hear the same song over and over. Carlos is like, “Hey, my father, what’s he doing in a place like this?”

Dad had to do what he had to do. So I think, kids can handle that. There’s nothing in the language that’s terrible. And also, it’s like talking about death with children or talking about sadness or poverty. I did this a lot when I was a therapist, I never had a kid say to me, and I worked with kids as young as seven that had some very bad things happen to them, “Gary, stop, it’s too much. I can’t handle this.” I think if you speak to kids in an appropriate way, using the right language, and you respect them for their ability to handle things then everything will be okay.

You can drop those little things in there like grains of pepper, as long as you don’t overdo it and respect the ability of a child to understand what they’re saying, I think kids can handle a lot more than they’re given credit for.

Thanks so much Gary. With the final question I will ask, what’s the most rewarding thing for you when crafting these stories?

It’s wonderful to see that you get this idea one day and you sit down and you check it out and you look at some books and you think, “Okay, I want to write about this person, I love their work.” Then you find a story within the life that’s a focal point for the themes that I think are important.

With Carlos it was him getting his first guitar, and his relationship and admiration with his father and their conflict.

Then I do more research, I go more deeply, I do my archeology thing and I dig real deep and I look for treasure. Then I write the thing, and then I have to sell it. Then [you] find an illustrator and you start seeing sketches and you start seeing this book come alive, and you say wow. The amazing thing, finally when you hold this beautiful thing in your hand, you think wow, “this all came about because of an idea.”

You convinced an editor and publisher to do this thing and they hired an amazing artist and then they printed this thing and it goes out into the world and then you get letters from people who tell you they cried when they read your book on John Coltrane, or Jimi Hendrix or somebody writes and says [they] went to high school with Jimi Hendrix. And so, it doesn’t matter it’s ten thousand people, or two people, when you see that it’s gone out like ripples, like you throw a rock into the pond. You just never know what’s going to come from this thing that resulted from you having a simple idea.

It’s an amazing process and I’m very, very blessed to have had these things happen for me, and to have these books come out. It’s a great blessing.

EFE New York - Thousands of members of the public, relatives of victims and officials gathered Tuesday at the former site in Lower Manhattan of the World Trade Center's twin towers, which were destroyed by Al Qaeda suicide hijackers on Sept. 11, 2001, to honor those who lost their lives in the worst terrorist attack in US history.

New York marked the 17 th anniversary of the terrorist attack with an emotional ceremony in which families of the victims read the names of the almost 3,000 people who lost their lives in the attacks that day.

Just minutes after the act began, at 8:46 am, those present observed a minute of silence in remembrance of the exact moment when the first airplane crashed into the Twin Towers.

A total of six such observances were scheduled throughout the act to also recall the crash of the second

aircraft into the World Trade Center, the one that hit the Pentagon in Washington, the one that crashed onto a field in Pennsylvania, and the collapse of the two New York towers.

Present at the memorial ceremony together with the victims' families were numerous authorities including New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

Also on hand among others were former New York Mayors Rudy Giuliani and Michael Bloomberg, and a very moved Nikki Haley, US ambassador to the United Nations.

The city, covered in a dense fog, kept its flags at half-mast on Tuesday and many church bells rang during the moments of silence recalling the attacks.

Though most of the family members who took part in the memorial only read the names of the victims or made a brief remembrance of their dear ones, one of the first to get on the podium took the occasion to ask that the tragedy no longer be used for political purposes

FROM DEMOCRACY TO TECHNOCRACY

Follow the law and get a subpoena or fix the elections and go to jail – decisions, decisions.

Oddly, when asked by Sen. Dan Sullivan (R-AK) whether Facebook was a tech company or a publisher, Zuckerberg answered, “When people ask us if we’re a media company — or a publisher — my understanding of what the heart of what they’re really getting at is, ‘Do we feel responsibility for the content on our platform?’

The answer to that, I think, is clearly yes.” But what does he mean by “we?”

Does he mean a set of policies crafted by a diverse group of democratically elected representatives? Or does he mean the royal we, in other words, him?

The Transformation

Shelly Palmer During the recent congressional hearings, Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA), the Senate intelligence committee’s vice chairman, said, “The era of the wild west in social media is coming to an end.” Congress, he said, will have to take action. “Where we go from here is an open question.” More hearings are clearly in the offing, and some kind of regulation is likely to follow. That’s the probable future, but what would happen if the government lost its ability to control the tech industry? What if tech fought back? What if our democracy transformed into a technocracy?

Facebook, Twitter, and Google (FTG) I’ ll use FTG as a proxy for content you can find on the public Internet.

During 2018 at three different congressional hearings, FTG was variously accused of “allowing” bad actors to use, and abuse, their platforms.

The proper use of FTG should not have been called into question, because FTG’s business model is putting the right message in front of the right person at the right time.

The abuse by bad actors who created fake accounts and deployed bots and trolls is a legitimate area of concern, and everyone knows it must be dealt with.

Then there is the concept of Fake News and the tactical reality of

censorship. Like pornography, you might know Fake News when you see it, but well-crafted propaganda rarely identifies itself. Whether human, machine, or a hybrid of both, someone or something has to determine what is acceptable and what is not. Whom would you anoint with that level of power?

Damned If You Do, Damned If You Don’t At least some government legislators believe that FTG has the power to accurately predict voter behavior and, more importantly, has the power to alter the course of elections. This is not an unreasonable thought. FTG is capable of high-level predictive modeling and has the ability to test messaging hypotheses quickly and efficiently. Which raises the question, “Could Mark Zuckerberg or Jack Dorsey or Larry Page have swung the outcome of the 2016 presidential election to the candidate of his choice?”

Just for fun, let’s imagine a world where the US government decides it is going to take big tech out to the woodshed. Congress has a bunch of hearings. Committees and subcommittees are formed and regulations are crafted. In this hypothetical world, FTG is really unhappy with the government getting in its face and the CEOs decide it’s time to fight back.

Playing this out, FTG sets out to replace the regulators with elected officials who are sympathetic (or subservient) to FTG’s cause. It works because FTG is that powerful.

Then the CEOs in traditional 1930s Gangland-style start divvying up the territory. They invite the other bosses (Microsoft, Amazon, Apple, etc.). And poof ! In three election cycles, America is transformed from a democracy into a technocracy – and no one (except those on the inside) would even know.

The Evolution It’s possible that a technocratic republic would provide a better quality of life than the current

constitutional republic. Turning data into action is what big tech does, and for our country to sustain its position as a world leader, it needs technological mastery as a core competence. A technocracy would be run far more efficiently than our current system, and it would be impossible for politicians to do anything other than what they were told to do for the good of the technocracy. However, this vision of a benevolent dictatorial technocracy is naïve in the extreme.

Everything might be great for a while, but then the CEOs would start to disagree or get into turf wars or some other conflict, and they would start fighting with each other with weaponized technology. In the end, some working-class hero would raise up an army and reclaim America for Americans – and in the process probably set the clock back to the Stone Age. Fodder for a B-movie script? Nope. It’s not good enough.

What’s Next Congress is looking for a fight.

Big Tech is not. The process may end with some mild, uninformed regulations that can be easily dealt with, or it may yield draconian regulations that inhibit innovation and growth, or we might end up with some amped-up privacy laws and some regulations around omniplatform advertising and messaging.

Whatever the regulations turn out to be, they will apply to everyone, and every business is capable of adapting to a level playing field. In reality, I am not too worried about government tech regulation.

But what if Big Tech decides to fight back? What would that America look like? I’d love to hear your thoughts.

I believe that Facebook or Google could have easily put its candidate of choice in the White House. But I also believe that the company’s CEO would currently be in jail if either had done so.

But FTG took a different path: it followed the existing laws, which state that because Facebook, Twitter, and Google are “neutral platforms,” FTG is not required to monitor illegal activity. In other words, it was business as usual, and FTG’s reward was … congressional hearings.
