IN AMERICA, WHO HAS THE RIGHT TO VOTE TODAY?

Hilbert Morales EL OBSERVADOR It is important to know who has the right to vote in America today because special interest groups are now doing whatever is possible to limit the influence and/or participation levels of targeted citizen cohorts. This is being done to maximize their own special interest election vote. Their goal is to limit the community's self-determined democratic governance. The controlling dominance levels of the WASP (White-Anglo-SaxonProtestant) communities are maintained through the use of gerrymander local civic elections using at-large votes (no districts) along with ‘Jim-Crow ordinances’ and Photo I.D.'s. It is each state of the Union (e.g., CA) which establishes and enforces its own ‘resident citizenship' standards. Currently, the City of Santa Clara's seven (7) city council members are elected using 'at-large' elections. A law suit has been initiated by local residents to legally change to a future 'city council district elections'. It is meeting resistance by a counter-offer of only two districts. It would be reasonable to have six or seven City Council Districts to enhance elected representation of all ethnic groups (Whites, Asian, African, and Mexican-Americans). Currently, this City Council does not fairly represent its diverse ethnic populations. Having no districts is a form of gerrymandering which ensures that only WASP community members become elected officials. This 2018 Mid-Term Election has

become very important because of the need to restore the 'checks & balance' authority and responsibility equilibrium established by the U.S. Constitution. The current Trump Administration has done much to curtail progressive public policy programs while currying favor with those whose focus is the reduction of monitoring, enforcement of established regulations which define and protect voters rights based upon citizenship (both 'birthright' and 'naturalized'). In CA, this is done by the Secretary of State (Alex Padilla, an elected official). With the ability provided by information technology's social media (especially Facebook, Google and Twitter), it has become possible for special interest agents, both American as well as those of foreign powers (e.g., hacking by Putin's Russia and China) to use activities designed to influence all traditional American election process' already decentralized into 50 State jurisdictions. In addition to the 50 states and a Federal District of Columbia, the United States has sovereignty over 14 territories. Five (American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands) have a permanent, nonmilitary population, of which only Puerto Rico's citizens are also American Citizens when their residency is located anywhere in the 50 States of the Union. Addressing 'suffrage' is appropriate here: SUFFRAGE is defined as “a vote given in deciding a controverted question or electing a person for an office or trust (Merriam- Webster Dictionary). Simply stated, 'suffrage' is your 'yea' or 'nay' vote made on a proposition (or measure) or when voting for

or against a candidate during an election. When voting, citizens agree to support the proposition (or measure) and 'agrees to be governed' by the decisions made by elected representatives. It is important that the 'right to be governed' is by the consent of each citizen who has access to factual, truthful and useful information, anything else is propaganda. The U.S. Constitution's 19th Amendment adopted August 18, 1920, prohibits the states and federal government from denying the right to vote to citizens on the basis of sex. Until the 1910s, most states did not give women the right to vote. This amendment was the culmination of American women's suffrage movement which was fought at both state and national levels to achieve women's right to vote. The U.S. Constitution's 15th Amendment, ratified February 3, 1870, prohibits federal and state governments from denying a citizen the right to vote based on that citizen's "race, color, or previous condition of servitude". It was the third (post-Civil War) Reconstruction Amendment. Puerto Ricans are regarded as American Citizens when they migrate to America's mainland. Puerto Rican citizenship was first legislated by the United States Congress in Article 7 of the Foraker Act of 1900 and later recognized in the Constitution of Puerto Rico. Puerto Rican citizenship was recognized by the US Congress in the early 20th century and continues unchanged after the creation of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico during 1952.

The 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo relocated the U.S.-Mexican border to its present Rio Grande location. Several territories (Utah, New Mexico, Arizona, California, Nevada, Colorado, and Oklahoma) along with Texas were annexed by America as an outcome of its Manifest Destiny expansionist ideology. ARTICLE IX of this treaty states that, “Mexicans who, in the territories aforesaid, shall not preserve the character of citizens of the Mexican Republic, conformably with what is stipulated in the preceding article, shall be incorporated into the Union of the United States and be admitted at the proper time (to be judged of by the Congress of the United States) to the enjoyment of all the rights of citizens of the United States, according to the principles of the Constitution; and in the meantime, shall be maintained and protected in the free enjoyment of their liberty and property, and secured in the free exercise of their religion without; restriction.” These are the Mexican-Americans who call themselves “Chicanos” today (a term which includes all the Southwestern Native American tribes who were often not treated as “American Citizens” having all civil and property rights. Alaska is the 49th state admitted into the U.S.A. The Alaska Statehood Act (Pub.L. 85–508, 72 Stat. 339 enacted July 7, 1958) when signed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Alaska then became the 49th U.S. state on January 3, 1959. Its journey towards 'statehood' included Russian explorers (fur traders), a gold rush into the Yukon Territory, and having a strategic military role during WW II.

Its history includes development of commerce involving fishing, forestry products, mining rights, railroads, etc. by J.P. Morgan and Marvin Guggenheim. Corporate interests today, as in the past, want to develop and exploit the natural resources located in Alaska. Their native tribes must be included as U.S. citizens having all voting rights and privileges pertaining thereto. (Source: Alaskan Statehood Act. Do google this fascinating item). Hawaii is the 50th State admitted August 21, 1959 into USA after being a U.S. Territory since 1898. British Captain Cook first visited Hawaii in 1778. Its history contains a royal family deposed by colonial occupancy with transition into United Nation's 'self-determination' approach still applied today. In its progressive community former President Barack Obama was born and raised by his 'white' mother. Presidential candidate Donald J. Trump displayed his white supremacist ideology when asking Obama to publicly display his Hawaiian birth certificate. This very brief summary of America's national formation to highlight that America is already a great nation which is still a work in progress and which permits diverse people having different languages and cultures to live together in peace while agreeing to abide by a self-determined democratic governance ideology. The citizens of all those 50 state jurisdictions have the right to vote! Do not permit Trump's antics to divert you from what has to be done. Your choices are communicated by your individual vote made in your own best interests on Tuesday, November 6, 2018. So plan to vote to sustain America's Democracy.

Juan y David cuentan contigo.

Where Does School Money Go? Not To Teachers, Study Shows

SEPTEMBER 7 - 13, 2018

ARIZONA TEACHERS CONTINUE FIGHT AFTER LOSING CHANCE AT BALLOT INITIATIVE funding levels, we still have students in classrooms with outdated textbooks, and we still have classrooms without a highly qualified teacher in them." The Invest in Ed proposition qualified for November ballots with more than 270,000 petition signatures. Polling from the group FM3 Research suggested the proposition would have had support among nearly two-thirds of Arizona voters. Photo Credit: Pixabay

If parents had a greater say in where education money goes, teachers and students would both be better off, a professor contends. Photo Credit: NAPS

NAPSI There are a little over 3 million teachers in America’s public schools and for the majority of them, interacting with children is the best part of the job. That’s just as well, since for too many, salary and working conditions are pretty poor. In fact, for more than 20 years, teacher salaries have not even been keeping up with the cost of inflation. According to a recent report by Benjamin Scafidi, Ph.D., a professor of economics at Kennesaw State University, there’s been a great Teacher Salary Stagnation and between 1992 and 2014, real average salaries for public school teachers actually fell by 2 percent. Where The Money Went While spending on education has risen in many states, instead of increasing teacher salaries, the public schools added personnel at a rate almost four times that of student enrollment growth—and these new hires were disproportionately nonteachers. If this increase in “other staff ” had matched student enrollment growth, the schools would have saved almost $35 billion a year. That could have meant an $11,100 raise for every teacher or education savings accounts (ESAs) for more than 4 million students to offset tuition payments at private schools, to save for college, or to pay for other educational services,

therapies, curricula and materials. Essentially, taxpayers spent a lot more per student, but teachers didn’t see much of it. That may be one reason so many school systems have been seeing teacher strikes lately. What Students Got What’s more, this had no measurable positive effect on students. National Assessment of Educational Progress Long-Term Trend scores for 17-yearolds fell by three points in reading and are flat in mathematics since 1992. What Can Be Done Dr. Scafidi suggested states should expand school choice and create incentives for schools to compete for teacher talent and students. How? By empowering parents to choose the best educational fit for their kids—and allowing the funding to follow them. This, Dr. Scafidisaid, lets families, not bureaucrats, decide where and how school dollars are spent. And if schools aren’t paying teachers what they deserve, those teachers should be able to teach where they’ll be paid for their hard work. Learn More Dr. Scafidi’s research was published by EdChoice, a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to advancing full and unencumbered educational choice as the best pathway to successful lives and a stronger society. To read the entire report, go to www. edchoice.org/StaffingSurge.

PHOENIX — Teachers nationwide are wearing red today in support of public education. Here in Arizona, educators are vowing to continue to fight for better schools in the state, despite an education funding initiative that was blocked from ballots. The state Supreme Court last week removed an initiative from Arizona ballots that would have raised an estimated $690 million for schools through a tax increase on the wealthiest 1 percent of Arizonans. Joshua Buckley is a high school teacher and chaired the committee backing the ballot measure. "Invest in Ed was taken off the ballot, but what wasn't taken off the ballot is the needs of all of our students,” Buckley said. “We are still $700 million short of 2008

But the Arizona Chamber of Commerce and Industry sued to block the measure, saying it would hurt the state's economy. And the State Supreme Court found the petition did not make clear that the proposition would have changed the state's system for indexing tax brackets to adjust for inflation. Buckley said with the initiative off the ballots, education supporters will instead focus their energies on candidates in state and local races. "I think education is a number-one issue in this election,” he said. “So we're paying attention, and we're going to get out there and vote and help people get elected who want to help public education." After a statewide teacher walkout last spring, the state Legislature agreed to give Arizona teachers a 20 percent pay raise over three years. But educators say much more classroom funding is still needed. According to the National Education Association, Arizona's perstudent spending is among the lowest in the nation.

SEPTEMBER 7 - 13, 2018

AMERICANS ARE FLOSSING IN THE STRANGEST PLACES routines when it comes to perfecting their smiles, revealing that adults can be better educated about healthy smiles and gums. "Healthy gums are the foundation of a great smile," said Steven R. Daniel, DDS, president of the AAP and a practicing periodontist in Murfreesboro, Tenn. "Taking care of your gums means more than just flossing when there's popcorn stuck in your teeth or when you're killing time in traffic. It also requires integrating diligent at-home care into your personal care routine and regular visits to a periodontist to ensure your mouth is healthy and free of periodontal disease."

So when it comes to our personal care routines, how much of a priority do we place on flossing? Among those surveyed who said they do floss, only 23 percent rated it the single most important part of their personal care routine, as opposed to: * Brushing their hair (48 percent)

Where have you flossed other than your bathroom? If you're like nearly 40 percent of Americans, the answer is‌ in a car. Photo Credit: Pixabay

How about on a date? Seven percent admitted to flossing on a date. Another six percent said on an airplane, and then there was the five percent who said in a work meeting. While experts agree that even some flossing - no matter where - beats none at all, the survey by Atomik Research for the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) illustrates a bit of a dichotomy: Only seven percent of Americans name flossing as most important to their personal care

* Applying moisturizer (38 percent) * Shaving (32 percent) * Cleaning their ears (25 percent) The good news is periodontal disease is preventable and actually reversible by rethinking your oral health regimen. Follow the advice of periodontists dentistry's experts in the treatment and prevention of periodontal disease - by brushing twice a day, flossing daily, and having an annual comprehensive periodontal evaluation. Taking these steps will soon give you that strong smile we all crave.

CATHOLIC CHARITIES AND THE COUNTY OF SANTA CLARA LAUNCH NEW HOUSE SHARING PROGRAM

Santa Clara County, CA – Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County has partnered with the County of Santa Clara to launch a new House Sharing program, providing County residents with more affordable housing options. Catholic Charities–the largest multi-service agency serving individuals and families in need in Santa Clara County for more than 63 years–matches people willing to rent a room in their home with people seeking affordable housing. The agency is the trusted matchmaker to ensure that room providers and renters are screened and compatible. “We are incredibly excited to be partnering alongside the County of Santa Clara’s Office of Supportive Housing for this much needed housing resource for our community,” said Lindsey Caldwell, Director of Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County Emergency Programs & Housing Services Division. “I believe the House Sharing Program is going to be a great success and will truly assist those in need of housing here in the heart of Silicon Valley.” The County’s Board of Supervisors approved a contract of $1.5 million with Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County to launch the new House Sharing Program on April 3, 2018. The pilot program has a goal to match 100 households (renters with providers) each year over the next two and a half years. “We’re proud that we can support this working partnership to find creative solutions to our housing crisis,” said Supervisor Joe Simitian, President of the County of Santa Clara Board of Supervisors. “If we can expand affordable housing options by matching people with extra space with those who are struggling to find a safe, affordable home, I’m all for it.” Simitian noted, “We can have a real impact here without ever pounding a single nail.” What is House Sharing? House Sharing is an arrangement by which two or more unrelated people share a home. This could be a homeowner or renter (House Provider) renting out vacant bedrooms to a person (or persons) seeking housing (Renters). It could

also include two or more people renting a home together. Each resident typically has his or her own bedroom but shares the home’s common living areas. Bathrooms may be private or shared, depending on the property. No two house sharing situations are alike; each is tailored to the needs and desires of the people involved.

Priority for rooms will be given to County residents with incomes below the area median income. In particular, seniors and young adults may find this a helpful solution to their housing costs. Seniors who are “house rich but cash poor,” who own their own homes and have vacant rooms, may find this option not just an attractive source of revenue, but also an opportunity for creating new friendships.

House Sharing is a County program administered by Catholic Charities. Catholic Charities will conduct marketing, outreach, facilitate the housing agreements, screen the House Providers and the Renters through background checks, and will provide advice and support to the participants. The agency operated a similar program in the past.

“Catholic Charities is honored to offer a creative way for people of different incomes to make ends meet by sharing the cost of housing, even as we work to create a just and compassionate community,” said Gregory R. Kepferle, CEO at Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County. “We operated a similar House Sharing program for 25 years and are excited to partner with the County to help our residents in need.” Based on a national model, House Sharing is an alternative way for people to meet their housing needs that provides numerous benefits to homeowners and renters alike. House Sharing has been successfully implemented in various locations throughout the North Bay, including San Francisco, San Mateo, Marin, and Contra Costa. Individuals interested in participating in the new House Sharing program should call (408) 325-5134 or email HousesharingSCC@ catholiccharitiesscc.org. CHECK WITH VOTER REGISTRAR -ARE YOU STILL ON THE ROLLS?

Palast found that among states using Crosscheck, one in six Hispanics, one in seven Asian Americans and one in nine African Americans landed on its list of suspect voters. “The outcome is discriminatory against minorities,” Swedlund says. The chief explanation for the racial inequity is that ethnic communities are more likely to share a surname, such as Washington, Lee, Patel or Kim, Palast told Ethnic Media Services. Swedlund and Palast found that the Crosscheck system seems satisfied that if two people share a common first and last name, they’re suspect. Differences in their birthdate, middle initial, Social Security numbers or suffixes such as “Jr.” and “Sr.” don’t keep registered voters off Crosscheck's lists. Not all 7 million people whose names appear on Crosscheck’s lists will be denied a vote, though. For one thing, only 36.4% of the people who were registered to vote even showed up at the polls in 2014. In one survey of elections between 1960 and 1995, the United States ranks dead last in the democracies of the world, with an average turnout of 48%.

U.S. citizens across the country soon will vote on all 435 seats in the House of Representatives, for 35 U.S. senators and three dozen governorships. The House of Representatives and possibly the Senate are up for grabs. Given the high stakes, voters would do well to check at least a month ahead of time with their local board of elections to see if they’re still registered to vote. This is especially true for people of color. The reason is that millions could find their right to vote challenged or taken away under suspicion that they’re trying to vote more than once, largely due to 26 states using the Interstate Voter Crosscheck system, which compares lists of voters in different states and challenges the registration of those whose names come up more than once. For the 1,166,000 people in the country who share the surname Garcia, this could be a problem. Likewise for the Rodriguezes (1,094,924), Jacksons (708,099), Washingtons (177,386), Kims (262,352), Patels (229,973), Lees (693,023) and Parks (106,696). Crosscheck, developed in 2005 by Kansas Secretary of State Ron Thornburgh as a free service for participating states, promised to detect voter fraud by comparing people’s names, social security numbers and birthdates. Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa and Missouri first implemented it in 2006.

During his tenure as Kansas’ secretary of state, current GOP gubernatorial candidate Kris Kobach expanded Crosscheck to 15 states by 2012 and 29 by 2014 and in 2017 was appointed to a leading role in the White House’s short-lived Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity. In 2017, of 98 million voting records Crosscheck analyzed, it deemed 7.2 million potential duplicates, although Crosscheck has yet to produce its first voter fraud conviction. Eight states that originally signed on have since dropped out, citing unreliable data. Nonetheless, it's still in use in dozens more. Eight of those state have Senate seats up for a vote this year in contests that are expected to be close: Arizona, Nevada, Indiana, Missouri, West Virginia, Tennessee, Ohio and Michigan. And 19 Crosscheck-using states are voting on their governor for the next four years. In a 2015 named “The Health of State Democracies,” the Center for American Progress, a nonprofit funded in part by the Gates Foundation, Wal-Mart, Ford Foundation and many others, concluded that the voters Crosscheck tagged for review are disproportionately non-white. “States participating in the Interstate Crosscheck system risk purging legally registered voters ꟷ with a significant oversampling from communities of color," it said, citing the work of journalist Greg Palast, who’s been studying the U.S. voting system since 2000, for the BBC, al-Jazeera America, Rolling Stone magazine and others and produced a film about it, “The Best Democracy Money Can Buy.” Working with data analyst Mark Swedlund,

Would-be voters whose names are missing from the lists of registered voters will be given what’s called a “provisional ballot,” to be tallied if the voter is ultimately found to have been wrongly left off the lists. Palast, however, skeptical that many provisional ballots are ever counted, refers to them as "placebo

ballots." Voters eager to cast genuine ballots, then, might want to call their local board of elections well in advance of Nov. 6 to be sure that they’ll be allowed to vote. In 2018’s highly charged political environment, individual votes may count more than ever. Take, for example, the recent special election for the vacant seat representing Ohio’s 12th congressional district. In that still undecided Aug. 7 race, 1,200 votes separate Republican Troy Balderson and Democrat Danny O’Connor at press time. Ohio has removed almost 200,000 voters from the rolls because they appeared on the Crosscheck lists. The margin of victory in the state’s 12th District race may ultimately be found among the 5,048 absentee ballots not yet tallied and the still uncounted 3,435 provisional ballots. No matter which of the candidates is awarded Ohio’s vacant 12th District Congressional seat based on the August election, voters will get another chance to decide between Balderson and O’Connor in November. That’s why voters who want to have their voices heard Nov. 6, in Ohio and elsewhere, should call local officials ahead of time to see if any problems have come up with their registration.

park," she states. LWCF funding helped conserve the Santa Fe National Forest and Watershed, a National Park Service Latino Heritage site that is significant for its history as the home to Hispano settlers and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The program is not funded by individual taxpayers but rather, from a small portion of federal royalties from offshore drilling. Recently, LWCF helped establish the Valle de Oro National Wildlife Refuge with outdoor and educational opportunities for Bernalillo and Valencia counties. Jennifer Brandt, deputy director of conservation programs for the Hispanic Access Foundation, says if the program is allowed to expire, parks might not have sufficient personnel or resources for maintenance and improvements, and some may even have to close. "So, without that funding, it would be

SEPTEMBER 7 - 13, 2018 a detriment to so many communities who have received this funding in the past but wouldn't be eligible for the funds that maintain these sites, and to help make sure that there are parks in every community, so that everyone has that access," she points out. New Mexico has received more than $300 million from the program over the past five decades, and Mendoza says generations of Latino families in the state have benefited from these sites. "And we know our communities are already disproportionately impacted by environmental racism, which if Congress weren't to authorize funding for the Land and Water Conversation Fund, then we know that that would add more stress and it would impact our communities," she states. Nationwide, the Land and Water Conservation Fund has supported more than 41,000 parks and projects since the 1960s.

Roz Brown Public News Service ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – A 50-year-old conservation program that will expire at the end of this month without action from Congress is the focus of a new film released by the Hispanic Access Foundation. The film, "Land, Water, y Comunidad," explores the importance of the Land and Water Conservation Fund to Latinos across

the country, including in Las Cruces. Estefany Gonzales Mendoza, coordinator of Juntos: Our Air, Our Water, says Latinos have a strong connection with sites funded by the LWCF, as places for communities to connect. Data from NASA shows a decrease in the seasonal ozone hole above Antarctica over the last decade thanks to the phase-out of CFCs and other ozone-depleting chemicals as called for under 1987's landmark Montreal Protocol. Global warming is certainly a hot subject in the news right now, what with all the oppressive weather we’ve been having, but it doesn’t mean we’ve solved the myriad other environmental problems facing us. That said, ozone depletion, while still problematic at certain times of year (especially in extreme southern latitudes like Antarctica) is a shining example of how we could be working together to make things better. Researchers first noticed four decades ago that the ozone layer in the stratosphere above the clouds was starting to shrink. A 1974 research paper by Sherwood Rowland and Mario Molina from the University of California at Irvine detailed how a class of synthetic chemicals called chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs)—then widely used in refrigerators, air conditioners and aerosol spray cans—were working their way up to the stratosphere where the sun’s rays would break them down into their constituent parts. One of these parts, chlorine, reacts with the sun’s rays and breaks down ozone molecules, thinning the ozone layer that all life on the planet has evolved to depend upon for protection against harmful ultraviolet-B (UV-B) rays. Less stratospheric ozone means more UV-B rays from the sun get through to the Earth’s surface, causing skin cancer and cataracts in humans and myriad problems for wildlife as well. Extra UV-B also inhibits the growth of phytoplankton, the lowest rung of the marine food chain. Researchers fear this culling of phytoplankton could reverberate with negative population impacts up the food chain. Recognizing that outlawing CFCs could solve the problem, the nations of the world came together in 1987 in Montreal and agreed to phase out the production of CFCs altogether. While it will likely

take another half century for the extra CFCs to filter out of the atmosphere and stop causing seasonal damage to the ozone layer, at least we’re moving in the right direction. The Montreal Protocol, ratified by 197 nations, still stands out to this day as perhaps the most successful international environmental agreement the world has ever known. So what can we learn from our efforts to solve problems like ozone depletion that we can apply to fighting global warming? The major takeaway from the ozone depletion solution is the fact that working together across partisan lines and national boundaries is key. In 1987, the governments of the world came together, played nice and got down to business crafting an international treaty with some teeth that forced an international weaning off CFCs. Of course, we have tried addressing global warming this way, with mixed success. Like the Montreal Protocol three decades earlier, 2016’s Paris Climate Accord was a landmark agreement where virtually all of the nations of the world agreed to cutting pollution (albeit voluntarily). But the fact that national leaders can easily pull their countries out of the climate agreement—as Trump did with the U.S.—or just simply reduce their commitments (given its non-binding terms) means that only time will tell if the Paris Accord will go down in history as the turning point in the battle against global warming—or just a footnote in the longer history of our environmental demise. DETROIT MOURNS THE DEATH OF ARETHA FRANKLIN

EFE

Washington - Detroit paid its last respects to Aretha Franklin this Friday with heartwrenching cries, soul-music psalms and a funeral attended by notables from the worlds of politics and music. The 76-year-old Queen of Soul died Aug. 16 at her home in the Motor City after a battle with cancer. Former President Bill Clinton was one of the speakers who eulogized her during the funeral at Greater Grace Temple. Clinton confessed that before entering politics, he and his wife Hillary were already unconditional Franklin fans, and later took the opportunity to invite her to events at the White House - she even sang at his inauguration. "She lived with courage; not without fear, but overcoming her fears. She lived with faith - not without failure, but overcoming her failures. She lived with power - not without weakness, but overcoming her weaknesses," said Clinton, who ended his speech putting his cell phone up to the microphone and playing Franklin's feminist anthem "Think." Also remembering the artist were former Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama, who both sent letters to the family of the deceased, which were read at the

funeral. The Rev. Al Sharpton, who read Obama's note, recalled Franklin's importance within the civil rights movement. She was "the soundtrack of the civil rights movement," said Sharpton, who used the moment to criticize US President Donald Trump for telling reporters that the artist "worked for me on numerous occasions." "No, she used to perform for you. She worked for us," said a visibly annoyed Sharpton, who got a standing ovation from the crowd. Franklin's coffin was open at the beginning of the ceremony, which allowed those present to see her brilliant golden dress and high-heeled shoes aglitter with sequins. Aretha has been dressed in different outfits for different ceremonies in her honor held in Detroit this week: a red dress on Tuesday, a blue one on Wednesday and pink on Thursday, when she was commemorated at New Bethel Baptist Church where her father was pastor. The Queen of Soul was transported to the Greater Grace Temple in the same vintage white Cadillac used for the funeral of civil rights pioneer Rosa Parks in 2005. After the ceremony, Franklin was laid to rest at Detroit's Woodlawn Cemetery alongside her father and other family members.

Google: I Don’t Think That Word Means What You Think It Means Shelly Palmer

advertising efficacy. In other words, Google can optimize for maximum revenue – which is exactly what it does.

President Trump recently tweeted: “Google search results for ‘Trump News’ shows only the viewing/reporting of Fake News Media. In other words, they have it RIGGED, for me & others, so that almost all stories & news is BAD. Fake CNN is prominent. Republican/ Conservative & Fair Media is shut out. Illegal? 96% of…. ….results on ‘Trump News’ are from National Left-Wing Media, very dangerous. Google & others are suppressing voices of Conservatives and hiding information and news that is good. They are controlling what we can & cannot see. This is a very serious situation-will be addressed!”

Search results on Google are fast, but are they really what you are looking for? If Google revenue was derived directly from search, it would be the best search engine on earth. But Google doesn’t make money from search; it makes money by getting you to click on ads (which you would never need to see if search results gave you exactly what you were searching for). Oh, and if Google were optimized for search (as opposed to advertising revenue), it would go out of business (or have to charge a subscription fee). Said differently, search is just the best clickbait Google can produce. Why the President and Senator Hatch Are Wrong

This prompted Senator Orrin Hatch (RUT) to send a letter to the FTC expressing his “concern about recent reports on Google’s search and digital advertising practices.” To help the president, the senator, and others who need a better understanding of “Google’s search and digital advertising practices,” I responded by posting this intentionally brief and generalized description of Google’s business model: “Google is not a search engine, it is a highly specialized direct response advertising engine purpose-built to translate the value of ‘intention’ into wealth for Google (Alphabet) shareholders. It is optimized to put the right ad in front of the right person at the right time. In other words, it is ‘rigged’ to optimize revenue – all other considerations are secondary.” Internet Currencies There are many different currencies that can be transformed into wealth. This is especially easy to do with digital tools. FANG (Facebook, Amazon, Netflix, and Google) provide some handy examples: Attention — Facebook knows what you are paying attention to. You post and share the things you care about, and your Facebook profile makes your attention actionable. Consumption – Amazon knows what you consume and what you’re thinking about consuming. If you’ve bought it or you are planning to buy it, Amazon knows it and can act on that data. Passion – Netflix knows your passions. You demonstrate how you can be reached on an emotional level every time you watch a video. Netflix knows more about the kind of entertainment that ignites your passions than you do. It continually acts on that data.

Intention – Google knows your intentions. You never intend to go to Google and stay there; you search for what you intend to do. Your Google profile indicates, with a very high degree of accuracy, what you are likely to do in the near-term future. This is some of the clearest, most actionable data in the world.

If you took the cash register receipt number and tied it to the credit card receipt you paid with, then analyzed the item detail and reverse appended it back to the credit card profile, the results of that data aggregation, transformation, segmentation, classification, and learning would be a prediction that might be of value.

Turning Data into Cash

Google does its version of prediction with incredibly sophisticated data modeling tools designed to understand (as in the example above) how to put the right ad in front of you at exactly the right time. I am intentionally leaving out a lot of details. Google has thousands of data points about everyone who interacts with it, and they use this data in very efficient ways.

Since Google is currently in the news, let’s look at how Google makes money for its shareholders. Google is one of the most data-rich organizations in the world. Unless you specifically opt out, the company collects data on almost all of your digital interactions. There are some things Google cannot get access to, but for the most part, if Google needs to enrich your profile to determine your propensity to exhibit a behavior (click, purchase, etc.), it has the reach and resources to do so. What Google “Knows” about You The verb “to know” is not literal. In this case, it’s shorthand for keeping a record and being able to access that record in the context of other records to learn or predict a future action. Google “knows” you about as well as a cash register knows you. Which is to say, it doesn’t know you at all.

What I Mean by “Google Is Not a Search Engine” Google is not optimized to be the best search engine in the world; it is optimized to be the best tool for transforming the currency of intention into shareholder value. This means that its search capabilities only have to be good enough to keep you coming back to Google for search. Considering that Google’s only real competition is Bing, the bar is not very high. This does leave Google in a unique position. It can subjugate search to

Google’s revenue growth has been double-digits year-over-year. In fact, revenue for the past four quarters is in excess of $120 billion. And I can say with certainty that as the Internet gets bigger, Google will get bigger and more profitable. From my perspective, Google is the digital equivalent of Alien (from the movie of the same name). It’s the perfect life form, acid for blood, can live in any environment, eats everything in its path, and is really hard to do away with. Looking at Google’s financial results and understanding how it makes money, it is impossible to imagine how Google could be optimized for anything other than advertising efficacy. Which is where its ~$120 billion a year comes from. President Trump is probably the most famous person in the world. Google would be one of the first places you would go to verify the previous sentence. What would possess them to diminish their revenue by even one click by somehow deprecating pro-Trump results? It makes no financial sense, and it is not what is happening. Bad News Can Be Good News The president knows better than most that controversial communications get clicks from both sides. He is a true master of social media, and he knows that searching Google for “Trump News” yields “about 920,000,000 results (0.79 seconds).” That’s the stat that he should be quoting. That number is huge. Author’s note: This is not a sponsored post. I am the author of this article and it expresses my own opinions. I am not, nor is my company, receiving compensation for it.

"You have to get up at the crack of dawn, pay the expensive fares to get here...this government ought to have a little more consideration for us seniors," she said.

VENEZUELAN RETIREES FORM ENDLESS LINES TO COLLECT THEIR PENSIONS

Caracas - Thousands of Venezuelan retirees were getting in long lines Monday outside banks to collect their pensions, the first time since the new amount of 1,800 bolivars was decreed by the govenrment two weeks ago, the equivalent of $30 at the official exchange rate. The monthly amount will be paid in four installments. EFE found that pensioners in Caracas waited in front of banks for up to two hours before they opened, a fairly normal practice in this country. The retiree Maritza Alvarez said the payment system "is a joke," after demanding the complete payment of her first fraction of 450 bolivars ($7.50). "They only gave me 90 bolivars (in cash)... the rest I have to spend with a debit card," the 78-year-old woman told EFE after collecting her partial pension at a private bank in the Venezuelan capital. At the same bank, pensioner Maria Roa, 70, who traveled from the satellite city of Guatire - some 30 kilometers (19 miles) from Caracas - to collect her money, told EFE that the amount she received Monday wasn't even enough to buy the medicines to treat her hypertension, which cost over 90 bolivars.

Venezuela's private media reported that such lines are common around the country. The long lines began two days after angry protests by pensioners demanding cash payments following the confusion caused by several government announcements. The new amount, which equals the minimum wage, is one of several measures launched by President Nicolas Maduro two weeks ago in an attempt to rescue his country from its economic crisis. Besides the boost in pensions and wages, the government decreed a price-freeze on 25 products of the basic food basket, restructured the currency by eliminating 5 zeros from the conversion rate of the newly christened "sovereign bolivar," and is pushing a "savings plan" in gold, with Maduro himself as its first investor. With all that, EFE has noted that products with regulated prices are getting scarce in supermarkets, and according to the National Assembly, controlled by the opposition, the measures are shooting inflation through the roof - more than 1 million percent in 2018, according to estimates of the International Monetary Fund.
