ACQUIRE THE KNOWLEDGE WHICH ENSURES HAVING A GOOD FUTURE & LIFE
Hilbert Morales EL OBSERVADOR In California, youth are required to attend school up to age 18 for a very good reason. Society and its economy require all sorts of skilled workers, i.e. KNOWLEDGE WORKERS'. The individual's developmental journey is presented from birth to adulthood because too many educators and administrators hardly ever acknowledge that education begins at birth and at home. Some educators would rather not have to deal with parents who are the legal guardians of any minor child (defined as being under 18 years of age.) Economists estimate that parents expend about $750,000 per child while rearing their kids. In this nation, instruction regarding religion is the responsibility of the parents so hopefully each child learns about the Decalogue (10 commandments) at home. The first four commandments deal with relationships to GOD. The remaining six commandments deal with human relationships (Honor your father and mother; Do not steal; Do no murder; Do not commit adultery; do not be a false witness; Do not covet your neighbor's goods). It is these standards of human behavior which are not being practiced uniformly at all levels of our
commerce, its society, and in many relationships between individuals. The non-compliance results in a society whose noncivilized materialistic behavior results in communities which have lower levels of security and safety; higher levels of fear and anxiety. From birth to age 18, parents are responsible for encouraging their child's education and training...core values of ethics, morals, religious ideology and personal social behavior should happen at home. Communication (vocabulary) and interpersonal relationship skills are essential along with reading, writing, and math because these basic skills are universally needed regardless of job interests. Consider that everyone, self-employed or employee, is paid for their knowledge and experience which is applied and evaluated as job performance. All positions (jobs) have a skill set which requires know-how which is why each and every individual needs to become a ‘knowledge worker'. The construction trades (carpenter, plumber, electrician, roofer, brick-layer, etc.); the legal professions (lawyers, judges, legal assistants, etc.); the medical services professions (doctors, nurses, clinical chemists, pharmacists, etc.); the Hospitality industry (waiters, janitors, chambermaids, etc.); scientists; retailers, financial services (banks)...each have a skill set which require training

It is very important for parents to encourage their school to expose their child to as many vocations as possible through excursions and visits to the Tech Museum (San Jose) and the Computer Museum (Mt. View) as well as the Monterrey Bay Aquarium. Each excursion may expose a child's mind to a future career which stimulates learning.
In this era, information technology (IT), artificial intelligence (AI) impact automation and robotics, in which personal computer skills are essential to being able to hold a job. Your reading skills, vocabulary, and understanding of the laws of nature are very essential to your success. Any deficiency results in a limitation of what you may do as an individual. What you know well establishes your knowledge worker status. Becoming a multi-disciplinary individual gives you many more career choices.
Let's review why it is essential for our youth to become educated and informed. Today's society is composed of diverse communities which are very inter-dependent. Job and work skill specialization is encouraged by economic business policy because of efficiencies in production, distribution, marketing, and profit oriented executive management. Governmental agencies were created to enforce labor laws: Department of Labor (DOL); safety of goods consumed (Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and job site safety standards (Office of Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and more. Each governmental agency was created to monitor, and enforce, when required, specific public policy that protects the labor involved and the public. The next time you visit a supermarket, take note of the thousands of items available for purchase. Each product represents specialized, focused knowledge. This is why

Be not afraid of asking questions; learn how to frame questions to obtain information of interest. Recent brain research reveals that as your mind receives and processes information, your brain changes. It is essential that you know enough about making good decisions regarding HOW NOT TO ABUSE YOUR BRAIN WITH SUBSTANCES such as drugs, alcohol, opioids,
meth, etc. Marijuana stops brain development when pot is used by those younger than age 26. Youths need to know enough to practice moderation which ensures personal health and wellness. Your school friends will assist you later in life when you need informed assistance and counsel by specialists you know. Take time to provide a hands-up to those who need your skills. Do take time to be the child who becomes a responsible and reliable adult. All these developmental transitions require focused personal effort. Growing up requires acceptance of changes; and acceptance of one's strengths and limitations. Plus having those supportive relationships which result in experiencing the good life which provides success, satisfaction, acceptance and belonging. Do take time to have fun; to enjoy recreation; to appreciate what you have accomplished. It is not all about how much money you earn; it is about knowing enough to make good choices during your life's journey. Most importantly, adopt those habits which enable you to learn from life as you make your own personal journey in this world. It takes useful and factual information to make good choices which enhance your life's quality. You will benefit by staying in school to acquire the knowledge which ensures having a successful future and enjoy a good life.
EL ANIVERSARIO DE LOS SOÑADORES Por José López Zamorano La Red Hispana Se cumple esta semana el quinto aniversario del Programa de Acción Diferida para Llegados en la Infancia (DACA), lo que debería ser ocasión para celebrar el ejemplo de dedicación y esfuerzos que nos han obsequiado unos 800,000 “soñadores” para contribuir a este país y mostrar que es posible un camino digno y respetuoso para los inmigrantes indocumentados. Pero lastimosamente DACA cumple sus primeros cinco años bajo el fuego cruzado de sus detractores, incluidos los 26 estados que buscan disolverlo legalmente, así como de la indiferencia de una administración Trump que no ha enviados señales claras sobre su futuro, a pesar de que prometió una solución humanitaria para los jóvenes soñadores.
Si la política migratoria de los Estados Unidos se basara en hechos reales y no en mitos, el argumento para la continuidad de DACA es claro y contundente: un 87% de sus beneficiarios están empleados en los Estados Unidos, lo que implica que están haciendo sus aportaciones de impuestos, Seguro Social y Medicare. De allí que es preocupante la reciente decisión de la administración Trump de rescindir la ampliación de DACA y su versión para adultos DAPA, aun cuando sus beneficios pudieron haberse hecho extensivos a más de 4 millones de personas ansiosas de sumarse legalmente a contribuir al crecimiento de un país que les ha dado mucho. También son angustiantes para muchos las señales de la posible eliminación de los Programas de Protección Temporal (TPS), que han permitido a cientos de miles de centroamericanos y caribeños que escaparon de la inseguridad, la pobreza o los desastres naturales.
Miles tienen previsto conmemorar esta semana el primer lustro de DACA. Será un recordatorio oportuno de que, más allá de los beneficios tangibles que el programa ha dado en sus primeros cincos años, aún se requiere una solución permanente a las justas reivindicaciones de millones de inmigrantes que aspiran a un futuro mejor y desean salir de las sombras para contribuir al engrandecimiento de los Estados Unidos. La reforma migratoria integral sigue siendo la gran tarea pendiente de los Estados Unidos, toda vez que el país requiere de un sistema racional que le permita contar con un flujo ordenado y sustentable de mano de obra, y que cumpla la misión de unificar a familias separadas por la distancia. Family Features Back-to-school season means it’s time to get back to the business of learning. This year you can ace your back-to-school shopping excursion with these time- and money-saving steps that can make getting the whole family ready for a new school year a breeze. Start with a list. Walking into the store without a list is an open invitation for impulse buys and forgotten items that end up costing you more time and money with a return trip. Create a thorough list by categorizing all the items you’ll shop for, such as supplies, electronics and clothing. Set a budget. Knowing what you can afford to spend ahead of time can save regret and returns after you shop. Calculate how much you’ll need to cover all the items your students truly need, then tack on some room for wants. One must-have is a highquality backpack. If your total budgeted expenses exceed your available funds, consider browsing weekly circulars to keep your budget in check.

What’s more, a store that specializes in school supplies will have a broad selection and ample stock of the essentials. Try online shopping. When you know exactly what you need, shopping online is a great time-saving solution. This service lets you do your shopping from home with just a quick stop in-store to pick-up your purchases. Buy in bulk. It may seem counter-intuitive when you’re trying to trim your spending, but if you can swing it, go ahead and buy extra items that you’ll likely need to replace mid-year. The sale prices during the backto-school season aren’t likely to repeat during the school year, so in the long run you’ll save money and avoid a last-minute shopping trip on a busy school night in the future
Explore your inventory. It may be buried under a summer’s worth of knick-knacks, but digging out the supplies your child cast aside at the end of the last school year may be worth the effort. Items like scissors, rulers and protractors may not need to be replaced every year if they’re still in working condition. Assess what items you have that can be reused and those that need to be replaced for the new school year.
Research specials and promotions. For many stores, the back-to-school shopping season is second only to the holidays. This means you can expect widespread sales, promotions and special deals, such as “deals as low as a penny.” Some states also offer tax-free holidays near the beginning of the school year, which are honored at multiple retailers and generally restricted to school-related purchases like clothing, supplies and some technology.

Another school year is quickly approaching, and now is the time to make sure your family is prepared! Back to school shopping is no small ordeal; a survey from the National Retail Federation (NRF) found that consumers are planning on spending $83.6 billion on back-toschool and back-to-college shopping in 2017 - up $7.8 billion from 2016. When spending such a large sum of money, it’s important to make sure you’re shopping wisely. In 2016, BBB received over 15,600 complaints against retail stores and online retailers from consumers nationwide. Many complaints involved not receiving ordered items, misleading advertising, and issues with products. Look up every business you plan on interacting with at bbb.org to see its BBB Business Profile, which includes a complaint history, reviews from past customers, and any advertising concerns. Scams could also be lurking around during your shopping experience, especially online. In 2016, more than 2,750 online purchase scams were reported to BBB Scam Tracker. According to the BBB Risk Index, they’re the third riskiest scam to consumers - 74% of victims lost money and the median loss was $101! More than 45% of backto-school shoppers plan to buy online (NRF), so make sure to only shop on secure, familiar sites. Whether you’re shopping in advance, last-minute, in stores, or online, BBB offers the following five tips for smart back-to-school purchases:

If you are throwing a paper away that has this information, make sure to shred it first. Be careful, consumers nationwide reported more than 350 identity theft scams to BBB Scam Tracker in 2016.

If you don’t have time to fit in a scheduled workout, try using daily tasks to incorporate fitness, Johnson advises. “You’ll still be able to reap the benefits of exercise by using small bouts of movement throughout the day. Although the school year hasn’t quite started, now is a great time to start thinking about tutoring services. Hiring a tutor for your child is a great way to help them with a subject they struggle in, ensure that they’re staying on top of their curriculum, or prepare them for an assessment. When looking for a tutor, however, it can be difficult to know where to start. There are many different options out there: from frequency and subject matter to types of tutoring businesses. In 2016, Better Business Bureau (BBB) received hundreds of complaints against tutoring companies nationwide. Common complaints involve tutors taking payment but not showing up to scheduled sessions, and difficulty obtaining a refund. The following BBB tips will help you find the best tutor for your child: • Know your options. There are many types of tutoring services: in-home oneon-one sessions, small group lessons, online instruction, and tutoring centers. You also have to choose between hiring an individual freelance tutor, and going through a tutoring company that will match you to a tutor. If you’re looking for a business, make sure to check bbb.org. There you can see a business’ BBB Rating, complaint history and reviews from past customers. • Ask for referrals. Asking friends and family if they have any recommendations is a great place to start. You can also ask your child’s favorite teacher, or other school employees for referrals. Make sure to talk about availability - when is the tutor free and how flexible are they? Having a consistent schedule is best, but you may need to add additional sessions if a big test is coming up. It’s important to discuss pricing before hiring a tutor. Price will depend on the level of experience of the tutor, frequency and type of sessions, and whether or not you’re going through a center. It’s also a good idea to talk to the tutor about benchmarks of success beforehand. Communicate your goals and how you’ll measure them. • Include your child. The most important factor to consider is your child’s comfort with the tutor. Make sure to include your child in the hiring process. Then, following its steps, Cal State East Bay and Laney College, in Oakland, also started working with the food bank.
As the summer comes to an end, college students across the Bay Area are getting ready to go back to school. But instead of worrying about what to wear the first day of class or if friends are in the same classes, many of them are worrying about whether they’ll have the resources to eat throughout the semester. It’s a reality that a big number of students go through. According to the Mercury News, a survey conducted in 2016 by the University of California shows that one in five students in the University of California System go hungry at school and a report by California State University says that about one in four of its students don’t have enough money to eat.

Isaac Patiño, a fourth-year art student at San Jose State University is part of the statistics. “My first three years I would only have two meals a day, sometimes just one meal,” Patiño said. “There were days where I didn’t have any money and my friends would invite me over to their home and that’s where I would eat.”

An SJSU student Affairs survey shows that “approximately half of SJSU students are sometimes skipping meals due to cost.” However, not all students might know that there are resources available for them. “I never knew of any program, maybe because I was so busy all the time…I worked full-

Students can have access to Food Shelves, which are self-serve informal pantries and there isn’t any need for registration where students can just stop and take the items needed. There’s also CHEW (Cooking Healthy, Eating Well), these are free cooking classes and all students that participate take free food and tips. The “Just in Time” program is partnership with the Second Harvest Food Bank which is on campus once a month and have groceries for students. “I wish I would have known about these [programs], it would have made a big difference in my education,” said Patiño, who is graduating in December and hopes to create awareness with his own family members and siblings who will attend college soon.

These days, many countries around the world produce food guidelines periodically to help improve nutrition and encourage healthy lifestyles among their populaces. The most recent update for Americans came in 2013 when the Obama administration released its MyPlate guidelines suggesting that a healthy diet consists of 30 percent grains, 40 percent vegetables, 10 percent fruits and 20 percent protein, the latter including some dairy. In unveiling the MyPlate guidelines, First Lady Michelle Obama suggested that Americans need not measure out exact proportions but instead simply make sure to exercise portion control and fill half their plates with fruits and vegetables and the other half with lean proteins, whole grains, and low-fat dairy. But earlier this year Canada came out with its own new set of more detailed food guidelines which public health advocates are praising as an improvement over America’s relatively simplistic standards. Indeed, Canada’s new Food Guide incorporates specific recommendations for eating the right foods according to an individual’s age and gender, and also offers tips regarding serving size for each food and preferred cooking methods, as well as suggestions for maintaining a wholesome lifestyle and body weight with daily physical activity. Based on input from some 20,000 Canadians, Canada’s new Food Guide encourages the intake of plant-based proteins like legumes and soy products rather than meats and dairy (although still advises to give whole milk, low-fat yogurt and cheese to young children). "There’s no more dairy food group, a win not only for public health but also cultural inclusivity, given that up to 90 percent of
some non-European ethnicities are lactose intolerant,” says Anna Pippus, an animal rights lawyer and director of Farmed Animal Advocacy at the non-profit Animal Justice. “It’s also a huge win for the cows who really don’t want us to kill their babies so we can steal their milk.” Pippus adds that instead the new guidelines “sensibly advise people to drink water.” Canada’s new Food Guide also recommends avoiding fruit juices—even those that are 100 percent fruit—as well as other sweetened beverages and energy drinks, instead suggesting water as by far the best way to stay hydrated. The Canadian guidelines also promotes making food from scratch whenever possible, while acknowledging that frozen, packaged and canned foods can be worthy substitutes if necessary. And in a nod to the interconnectedness of our food systems, Canada’s new guide highlights how the choices we make about what we eat impacts the environment and has serious consequences regarding keeping the planet safe and clean. While Canada may be far ahead of many countries in promoting healthier lifestyles and smarter food choices, we can all learn a thing or two from our neighbors to the north about how making small changes in our diets can lead to healthier, longer lives. The release of Canada’s new guide also underscores the need for the U.S. to update its own food guidelines accordingly. But regardless of whether or not the Trump administration feels compelled to issue its own dietary updates, concerned Americans can take matters into their own hands by upping the proportion of organic and locally sourced foods on their dinner plates and tempering a balanced diet with moderate amounts of daily exercise.

OUTSIDE LANDS TENTH ANNIVERSARY ROUND UP
The decade old music, food and booze festival continues to bring in great mainstream and upcoming acts to the fields of Golden Gate Park should have seen her live, but such is life. You win some great performances, you miss some. One bad news item I will add for this year’s lineup was the rescheduling, then outright cancellation of legendary hip hop group A Tribe Called Quest. Friday was supposed to be the double whammy of Tribe, followed by Gorillaz, but unfortunately it was not meant to be. Their first cancellation was due to “travel” issues, but when they ultimately canceled again Saturday it took a few days and a statement from the group for them to apologize and add, “We wanted to play for you and we wanted to honor Phife's wife in their hometown. Unfortunately, everything did not come together before the closing curfew. For that, we are deeply sorry. We look to correct this and regain your confidence.” Phife Dawg, one of the members of the group, passed away last March from complications related to diabetes. This tour, including the Outside Lands set,
was touted as their final world tour, with this being the tail end, and the last performance ever in the United States. So, safe to say, there were a lot of upset fans, I was one of them ( :/ ). But I cannot imagine such a group feeling whole missing one of their key pieces, and I hope the best for them in their future endeavors, even if they don’t reunite under the Tribe name. I do believe though that thanks needs to be given to the promoters of OSL, Another Planet, which were able to make the smoothest transition and changes possible with sudden losses of headliners this past weekend. Great job on that end. Regardless of the rollercoaster that A Tribe Called Quest's cancellation caused for the festival (and again, me), it turned out to be full of highlights and fun, it’s hard not to have a smile on your face when you’re amongst good music and the cool air of San Francisco, drinking an IPA and looking out at the lit-up tree line of Golden Gate Park. Arturo Hilario El Observador The early August event that takes over the Polo Fields and surrounding areas of Golden Gate Park and turns it into an art and music wonderland returned for its tenth anniversary last weekend, and although there were some hiccups with the lineup, the party kept rolling, and even had Henry Rollins included. One of the upgrades this year was the beefed-up Barbary Coast comedy and stand up tent which was renovated and moved into a bigger space at the Outside Lands (OSL) grounds. This was my first happy place of the weekend, as Henry Rollins, known for his time with the seminal punk band Black Flag, proceeded to tell us about himself and his experiences. During his set, he revealed a lot about himself and the way he sees the world, mostly in a very positive light meant for experiencing, and in a very earnest and humorous way. It was a chance attendance for me, and it unknowingly became a bucket list item I didn’t know I needed to get done. Navigating the festival was easy as it has been since I began attending, as long as

you have a map you’re set. Although I’ll always prefer a physical map, to take notes on who I want to see and get a feel for where things are located, the app which also features alerts on changes and your chosen set times is a good alternative. I felt the app was less buggy than its previous incarnation, and also had the map feature which essentially overlays the nice design of the OSL map over Google Maps and lets you figure out where you are, where you’re going, and what foods you want to stuff in your face.

Speaking of stuffing faces, OSL’s food continues to raise the bar for what to expect at a music event. This isn’t hot dogs and heat lamp burgers, and it’s never been that way at OSL. Established eateries that were there included Humphry Slocombe, Rocko's Ice Cream Tacos, Curry Up Now and Chairman Truck. I think my favorite food was the Filipino Veggie Pancit Noodles and Shanghai Pork Lumpias from FOB Kitchen though. I will scour the Bay Area for those again. Now onto the performances. Artists did not disappoint, with my highlights being: Porches, Kali Uchis, the legendary Gorillaz, K. Flay, Solange, and Schoolboy Q. I watched Lorde’s set after the weekend, insuring my beliefs that I

PHANTOM TRIGGER: NINTENDO SWITCH GAME REVIEW in-line with how the rest of the user’s experience will go. There is a distinct lack of tutorial or hand-holding to start the game. I like to imagine myself as an experienced, “pro” gamer, but even I was calling for a bit more guidance. Phantom Trigger gives no attempt to clue the gamer in on controls, combos, or even where to go. Luckily the level design is a bit linear.

This action rouge-like game may drive you as insane as the main character. In Phantom Trigger you play as Stan, a man dealing with some mysterious illness which seems to cause some sort of… mental lapses. Without spoiling too much, the narrative is a bit jarring by design; it jumps around and leaves the player as confused as Stan. It shifts from Stan’s real world – working out his illness with experts and his wife – and some fantasy land where the user gets to control all of the difficult action. Though the level design isn’t too large or sprawling, it is possible to get lost as everything looks a bit same-y. The environments in each episode look like they are in the same “cave” (think dark colors), but I wouldn’t say this is necessarily a bad thing. The levels themselves are a tad confusing, but nothing that will leave you lost for a lengthy period of time. And even if you were to get lost, you can take comfort in knowing that your dash mechanic is fun and fast. Despite its faults, where the game shines –the combat, mobility, combos – it really shines.
combos that are learned by leveling up. The combat is both satisfying and frustrating. When you are able to “get in the zone“ and weave in and out between enemies without getting hit, the game feels great and satisfying. But mis-time an enemy’s attack or mis-judge the dash’s length, and it’s easy to descend into frustration. The enemies have extremely predictable patterns and taken 1v1, they are not too difficult. The issue arises with juggling multiple enemies in a confined space and having the attacks compound on you with a single mistake. Upping the difficulty a bit too is the game’s checkpoint system. It’s a standard system where you are granted re-tries and are respawned back at the latest checkpoint upon death. The issue is it’s very easy to allow two hits from the monsters to become 6 and then suddenly you’re left hunting the next checkpoint with only two hits worth
of HP left. Dying comes very easily, forcing you to replay the same areas constantly, and leave you wanting to take a long break. Lastly, I also had a minor grip with the controls. It seems like the kind of game that would work natively with a controller, but it required a keyboard /mouse set up, but that’s okay. The issue is that there is a cursor on the screen but our hero does not attack in the direction of the cursor, he attacks in the direction he is facing, mean you aim with the WASD keys. It took a bit getting used to, but I still maintain that overall it felt very imprecise and a bit counter-intuitive. For a game that starts on “hard” by default, it surely lives up to that standard. Despite the difficulty and control issues, the game as a whole is fun and definitely warrants some attention. The total length of the game is ~7 hours and is reported to have 5 different endings!
Our hero has the ability to use an instantaneous dash maneuver. The dash moves so fast it’s essentially a teleport move that requires caution of any line-ofsight obstacles which may block your dash when you need it most. The best part of the dash is that it’s blended in with the combat system which has some set predetermined
