LEBRON JAMES' GOOD WORKS IS A “HAND-UP” TO AKRON, OHIO COMMUNITY

Hilbert Morales EL OBSERVADOR Dear Mr. Donald J. Trump: When I read the caption “TRUMP BASHES LeBron James Before Ohio Rally” (SF Chronicle, Sunday, August 8, 2018, page A11), I decided to tell you the following:

respond to your ability to bring out their most uncivil behavior which marks you as being a misogynist (one who abuses women) and a racist (one who believes that the Anglo-Saxon race has been ordained to be the leader of all the rest of humanity)...especially persons of color whom you deal with comfortably only from the position of privilege and wealth provided to you at birth by your family.

You were not speaking to the American People as their “President”, but as a highly insecure individual who has never fairly won the Electoral College vote which placed you in the White House's Oval Office. You did not get elected without the assistance of a long-standing historical adversary of These United States of America. Despite your personal propensity to project 'a tough guy' image, your personal pronouncements are based upon your personal need to always be the “King of the Mountain”.

Many American citizens by birthright (who are not naturalized citizens and whose parents were former immigrants) are willing to endure your presidency for one term or maybe even less, because they are engaged with their family in support of their community and this American nation's democratic ideals. It was these ideals which you pledged to support, uphold and defend, so help you GOD, when you were sworn in as the elected leader of this Democracy and 'The Free World'.

Mr. Trump...You need to be told the following: “When anyone, especially persons of color, needs your white supremacist opinion, we will ask you for it.” Why do you need the accolades provided over and over again by your supporters at rallies? They

Frankly, I know of no one who holds you in high regard as a role model because of your propensity to bring everything down to your low road approach to the challenges of our diverse society, its economy, and its governance. You do not understand what Jesus

Christ meant when he said, “He who wants to be your leader must first become the servant of all.” (St. Mark's Gospel; King James Bible). If you are the gifted genius you proclaim you already are, when will you begin to share your insights and plans about the desired future state of our society, its commerce, and its governance? Again, the Bible states: “Without visionary leaders, the people perish.” When will you clearly communicate your vision so that ‘We, The People’ know it, understand it, and decide to support it? What 'We, The People' have noted is that you curry favor with those who are already very well off. You seem to admire those few individuals who are strong autocratic leaders. History relates many oligarchs who failed simply because they did not enable their constituents to do more than just survive. Upward mobility measured by wealth, social station or technical ability is an essential to all individuals because all need to be recognized, appreciated and thanked by those who benefited from the services or goods produced and made available. Mr. Trump...you need to understand that education, defined as the facilitated

access to factual, truthful and useful information (collectively known as 'science') is an essential for each of us who decides to become capable. LeBron James's personal journey began in a disadvantaged community which is still marginalized by the bias, bigotry, and prejudice still extant today. The Civil War (1865) was a conflict costing this nation some 600,000 casualties. The North won this struggle to “free the slaves”, however, the beliefs and practices of many white supremacists such as you, still do not accept persons of color as worthy of having equal citizenship rights and access to needed information acquired by attending public schools or having access to archives of information accessible at public libraries. LeBron James is a gifted individual whose superb athleticism permitted him to earn recognition and wealth as a highly skilled basketball professional athlete who entertains fans. LeBron James merits recognition and appreciation for deciding to share his wealth in his community. By underwriting a school named “I Promise” which is located in his hometown of Akron, Ohio, he has 'given

back' to his community. He is following the role model examples of Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan, two African-American professional basketball athletes who have successfully invested in their communities. LeBron James has decided to share his wealth to mitigate those forces which keep certain folks 'in their place'. What LeBron James is doing is called 'human capital formation' by economists. Those youth who take advantage of his hands-up approach will be enabled to leave that marginalized community and its culture. What LeBron James has initiated will provide him with a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction when he sees the future successes and advancements of those youth who took advantage of the opportunity underwritten by his wealth and supportive caring. LeBron James has lived up to those Christian ideals of 'Concerned Love and Charity', for which he has, as a Good Samaritan, earned and will receive much appreciation and gratitude (i.e., ‘good vibes’). He cared about the disadvantaged; when will you begin to deal with challenges faced by America's low-income working class?

BBB TIP: BACK TO SCHOOL

the URL starts with “https” and includes a lock symbol. The “s” in “https” stands for secure, that way you know your information is being protected. • Look up the website’s privacy policy and contact information. If it is not clearly listed, or they only have an email as the point of contact, take that as a big red flag and shop elsewhere. • Do your research. An unknown website may offer a similar product at a lower price. The lowest price isn’t always the best route. Check for user reviews and badges for consumer protection agencies. • Be sure to use your credit card instead of your debit card, as credit cards not only provide additional protection, but it’s also easier to dispute a fraudulent charge.

Better Business Bureau It may seem like school just let out, but it’s already time to start thinking about the new school year! With back-to-school specials running all summer long, parents and students can start their shopping early and spread it out to avoid a hefty back-to-school shopping bill all at once. Better Business Bureau offers up the following tips on how to shop smart when starting your back-to-school or back-to-college shopping: Make a list You can either wait for the school supplies list to come out, or start shopping without it. Even if you don’t have the exact list, you should have an idea of what to purchase regarding school clothes, and basic supplies. Jot everything down on a list and stick to it! Impulse buying can jack up your overall total in a hurry. Shop your home You may already have some of the items from last year hidden in your home. Why purchase the same thing twice? Research big ticket items Before purchasing that expensive laptop, tablet or dorm refrigerator, be sure to do your research. Research the brands, warranty, customer

reviews and the prices at various stores to be sure you’re getting the best deal. Also check the retailer out with BBB at bbb.org. Look for the sales Compare prices between different retail stores, save your coupons, sign up for email alerts and redeem any cash-back or rebate offers. This will help you get the best deals, saving you a nice chunk of dough. Ask for student discounts Many stores and software companies offer discounts to students that have either an .edu email address or a student ID. Even if you don’t see a discount advertised at the store, it doesn’t hurt to ask. Shop in bulk Some teachers ask parents to buy bulk items for the entire classroom to use throughout the year. Talk with other parents about what they’re getting, and see if you can all split the cost. Know the return policies and save your receipts Kids can be fickle. They can love a new shirt yesterday but hate it today. Ask about return policies before making your purchase. Be sure to save your receipts just in case you have to return the item later. Shop safely online • When shopping from an online website the first step is to make sure

Protect your child from identity theft Another thing to think about while getting your kids ready for back-toschool is identity theft. Believe it or not, children are especially good targets because they have zero credit history and no questionable banking transactions in their history. A child can have their ID stolen through their social security number or social insurance number and you may not find out about it for years. Here are some tips for protecting your child’s identity as they head back to school:

• Be extremely wary of any website or store that asks for your child’s personal information in order to access special deals.

• Don’t allow them to carry around their social insurance number or social security number. Leave it at home and locked in a safe place.

• If you’re buying supplies through a website like Craigslist, make sure you don’t wire money to someone you’ve not met. Use PayPal if possible, but if you are using cash, make sure you meet in a public place and bring a friend.

• If a business or school asks for their SIN or SSN, ask questions. Why do they need it and where and how is this information being stored? How long is it being stored and how will it be terminated? Who has access to it?

• If you use Facebook you know banner ads are all over the place and many ads are even catered to what you like. Some of them, however, are just click bait ads to drive you to a different website where you could potentially be asked to input personal

• Educate your child on being safe if they are active in the online world. Keep detailed personal information off social media profiles. Click here for more tips on online safety. You can reach your BBB at info@ bbbemail.org or (510) 844-2000, or by visiting bbb.org.

TAX-AIDE PROGRAM GETTING READY, 6 MONTHS AHEAD OF TAX SEASON

Volunteer Tax Preparers Needed

Suzanne Potter California News Service SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The AARP Foundation is recruiting volunteers now for its highly successful and popular Tax-Aide program, which offers free tax-preparation services each spring. The program, now in its fifty-first year, has helped more than 68 million people file their taxes since its inception. In 2018 alone, people who used the service got $1.3 billion in income-tax refunds and more than $213 million in Earned Income Tax Credits. Hector Chao, a longtime Tax-Aide volunteer, says you don't have to be an accountant or tax preparer to join in - because all volunteers get comprehensive IRS-backed training. "We take a course and then if we pass the test, then we are assigned to do

the work," says. "So it's challenging and, besides, it allows us to help somebody else." Last year, almost 3,000 volunteers helped more than 178,000 Californians file their state and federal tax returns. There are 381 Tax-Aide sites in California, including many at senior centers and libraries. Learn more here. Chao says he's been volunteering since 2004 and encourages others to get involved. "Normally, this takes place only during the tax season, which is February through April," he explains. "However, during the year there is a continuing program for people who have to have amendments made to their tax returns." Nationwide, the Tax-Aide program is offered at nearly 5,000 sites, where more than 35,000 volunteers serve more than 2.5 million taxpayers each year.

It's a common misconception that bananas aren't as healthy due to the higher sugar content; however, the natural sugars in bananas come with fiber, which slows digestion and gives the body time to use it as fuel instead of storing it as fat. Grab a bunch of Chiquita bananas at the store and you have a convenient preworkout snack or perfect addition to your recovery shake. Cottage cheese: Scoop up some of this white wonder and enjoy with your favorite fruit or a sprinkle of your preferred herbs. You can also add a satisfying crunch by sprinkling in omega-rich cashews or almonds. Cottage cheese is packed with protein, so it helps you feel full longer, essential for long runs (or simply long days full of to-dos). For fitness folks, this protein helps assist in rebuilding and repair of muscles during training periods. HEALTH

closely aligned with the SRGNC Education and Community Foundation’s emphasis on education and community—SRGNC has previously partnered with schools and given grants to local organizations in an effort to improve local communities throughout the Bay Area. Over 15 volunteers from SRGNC and the Cityline Sunnyvale team were on hand to help distribute backpacks and supplies to children during Friday’s all-day event.

SUNNYVALE, CA –This past Friday, August 3rd, Sunnyvale Community Services (SCS) held its annual “Head-to-Toe: Backpack Day,” a backto-school event that distributes backpacks, school supplies, gift certificates for new shoes, books, dental hygiene kits, and bags of nutritious food to 1,800 low-income Sunnyvale school children. Sunnyvale Mayor Glenn Hendricks, Vice Mayor Larry Klein, City Councilmember Gustav Larsson, U.S. Congressman Ro Khanna, and over a dozen Public Safety Officers all attended Backpack Day to show their support of this important program. The program’s Premier Sponsors were The Sares Regis Group of Northern California (SRGNC) Education and Community Foundation and Hunter Storm, who reached out to business partners working on CityLine Sunnyvale and other projects to raise a total of $150,000. This commitment comes from an ongoing collaboration between SRGNC, Hunter Storm, and the City of Sunnyvale to develop CityLine Sunnyvale, a multi-phase redevelopment project over 36 acres in the heart of downtown Sunnyvale. “We are extremely grateful to Sares Regis for reaching out to its wide network and helping us to meet our ambitious financial goal for Backpack Day this year,” says Marie Bernard, Executive Director of SCS. “The rising

ADDRESSING FAMILIES SEPARATED BY MASS INCARCERATION Soundbite Services Children with a parent in prison are more likely to experience mental-health problems and face additional education challenges. (Boardhead/Wikimedia Commons)YPSILANTI, Mich. — For weeks, Americans have been gripped by reports of young children being separated from their parents along the U.S.-Mexico border, and human rights activists are pointing to the nation's mass incarceration system as another ongoing example of families torn apart. Natalie Holbrook, with the American Friends Service Committee, said infants born behind bars are separated from their mothers almost immediately, and many end up going directly into the foster care system. "We know how important it is for skinto-skin contact, but babies will be taken away,” Holbrook said. “Even though the World Health Organization says that breast milk is best for vulnerable infants and babies, they are not allowed access to

breast milk." Having a parent in prison can impact children's mental health, social behavior and educational prospects. The trauma and stress of disrupted family life also can be compounded by the social stigma faced by children with parents behind bars. Demetrius Titus, also with the American Friends Service Committee, was sentenced to two life sentences at the peak of the nation's war on drugs for possession and intent to distribute a controlled substance. He was 22 years old at the time, had no previous record and was enrolled in college. He also had two young daughters. "You can write, you can call, you can have visits, it's still an extremely difficult situation because it's a broken bond,” Titus said. “Pretty much having to watch them grow up from a distance probably was the most singularly difficult thing I've ever had to deal with in my life." Holbrook suggested the roots of mass incarceration in the U.S. can be traced back to the days of slavery, where children

were routinely sold and separated from families. Racial minorities are more likely than whites to be arrested, convicted and face higher sentences. Still, Holbrook said, many moms and dads are resilient, and have been able to do a good job of parenting behind bars. "But it's still not like being able to have your mom or dad kiss you goodnight, and be there if you wake up sick in the middle of the night,” she said. “It's not the normal family involvement that we need to create

AUGUST 10 - 16, 2018 healthy and whole communities." Holbrook said taxpayer money that currently fuels the $182 billion annual prison economy should be redirected to education, mental health and substanceabuse treatment. The U.S. puts more people behind bars than any other nation. Since 1970, the number of incarcerated people has grown by nearly 700 percent, to more than 2 million people, far outpacing population growth and crime.

WASHINGTON – Millions of people across the U.S. gathered for National Night Out events Tuesday to build camaraderie between communities and local law enforcement. The annual observance is intended to encourage relationships with those sworn to serve and protect. Vera Bumpers, president of the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement, says this year, conversations are much needed about threats to the safety of residents and law enforcement, including the nation's gun epidemic and new 3D-printed gun technology that will allow nearly anyone to create a deadly weapon. "Beyond just the 3D printer, there are many concerns in the community trying to deal with the strain between law enforcement and the youth, the shootings,” Bumpers states. “So, this is just an opportunity for us to talk, to impart some knowledge about what law enforcement does and to hear their concerns." 3D-printed guns can be constructed from plastic

and are capable of firing standard handgun ammunition. And Bumpers contends they're a serious public safety threat, as they'd be untraceable and invisible to metal detectors.

There have been 150 mass shootings in the U.S. so far this year. Bumpers says local law enforcement is interested in the concerns of the communities they serve, but points out that many people never interact with police until there's a threat to their safety. She notes regular communication can foster relationships, and she encourages people to become informed about how they can help create a safer community. "Do homework,” she urges. “Before taking a position on anything, make sure you do your research. “And discuss – talk and reach out to law enforcement professionals, and make sure there is dialogue." More than 38 million people from all 50 states participated in last year's National Night Out with vigils, block parties, parades and other events. Due to summer heat, Texas hosts its events in October.

Apple Is Getting into Original Content, Where Does That Leave Advertisers?

Commercials will still work for live broadcasts, but nowhere else.

No Commercials Needed (or Wanted)

Bad Dreams

We’re nearing a point where the consumer experience and product offerings brought to us by Netflix, Amazon, HBO, and Apple (NAHA) will replace commercial television for a substantial percentage of consumers. Since none of these services need (or want) to sell advertising time, the concept of “mass marketing” is about to change.

I can imagine a not-too-distant future filled with content “haves” and “have nots.” If you can afford to pay for NAHA, you’ll enjoy the most compelling content served with the best on-demand user experience. If you can’t, you’ll be stuck with unwatchable fodder that is created as cheaply as possible and designed so that the fewest number of viewers will tune out. Commercial television will devolve into filler between an almost unbearable number of commercials (yes, it can get worse than it is now), and advertisers will still reach only a fraction of the audiences they need to reach.

What About Data?

Apple is now a trillion-dollar company. Better-than-expected iPhone sales have propelled the company to be wealthier than all but the 15 richest companies in the world, and only the second company (following PetroChina, an oil and gas company) to reach that valuation. But wait, there’s one more thing … With Apple TV unit sales and revenue growing by “very strong double digits” last quarter, and a 100 percent increase in third-party providers (like AT&T’s DirecTV Now) using the Apple TV platform as the go-to-market device for their services, Apple has its sights set on another heretofore untapped market for the company: original content. “The cord cutting in our view is only going to accelerate and probably accelerate at a much faster rate than is widely thought,” said Tim Cook. In August 2017, Apple announced plans to spend about $1 billion to acquire 10 TV shows. The company has since signed deals with Oprah Winfrey, Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Television and Sesame Workshop, and hired Jay Hunt, who brought shows like Black Mirror and The Great British Bake Off to Channel 4 in the U.K. Then, There’s Netflix, Amazon, and HBO Apple will be joining a crowded and very competitive marketplace. Netflix (125

million subscribers), the market leader, is set to invest $8 billion on content in 2018 (which is up from $6 billion last year). Amazon (95 million subscribers), is set to spend $4.5 billion on content in 2018, with estimates that its upcoming Lord of the Rings series could cost $500 million (and that’s after the $250 million Amazon spent to win the rights to stream the show).

… It’s just a reality that doing a show will cost more.”

Imagine reducing commercial broadcast television audiences by 25 percent. What impact would it have on a national advertiser’s ability to drive velocity at retail for a mass-manufactured, massdistributed brand? Will Facebook and Google fill the void? Is there even enough digital inventory to make up the difference?

Perhaps the evolution of mass communication will leverage the wealth of data NAHA collects. There are probably some very interesting ways to use content tokens and loyalty programs to help subsidize subscription costs. But I’m not sure that any of these organizations are motivated to do anything that would confuse their subscribers or negatively impact their consumer experiences.

Where does this leave mass-market advertisers? It’s probably time to start thinking about how many-to-many (social) communication can be re-engineered for maximum reach to supplement or replace one-to-many (broadcast) communication. Of course, other solutions come to mind – one of the NAHAs may find advertising dollars irresistible. We’ll see. Author’s note: This is not a sponsored post. I am the author of this article and it expresses my own opinions. I am not, nor is my company, receiving compensation for it.

HBO (54 million subscribers), the platform that has Game of Thrones, spent $2 billion on content in 2017. Game of Thrones was never an inexpensive show to make, but budgets have gotten far bigger as the series has rolled on. Its first-season episodes cost (on average) $6 million each, but each of the six (nearly feature-length) episodes that will make up 2019’s eighth (and final) season will cost $15 million (or perhaps even more). With multiple prequels planned (to launch in 2020 and beyond), HBO has big plans and even bigger budgets; Francesca Orsi, HBO senior VP of drama, has said, “$50 million (per season) would never fly for what we are trying to do. We are going big.” As the saying goes, when you play the game of thrones, you win or you die – but either way, you wind up spending a lot of money. In discussing the nine-figure deals Netflix has given Ryan Murphy and Shonda Rhimes, HBO programming chief Casey Bloys told the Hollywood Reporter, “You kind of have to adjust to the marketplace

EL VIDEOJUEGO "SPIDER MAN" TRATA DE EMULAR EL ÉXITO DE MARVEL EN EL CINE

With a CEFCU® Vehicle Loan... Getting there together is better than going it alone.
