os días después de su encuentro con el presidente Andrés Manuel López Obrador en la Casa Blanca, el presidente Donald Trump deslizó la inminencia de una orden ejecutiva sobre migración que incluiría un camino a la ciudadanía y alivio para los beneficiarios de DACA, el popular programa que beneficia a alrededor de 700,000 jóvenes indocumentados, la abrumadora mayoría de ellos mexicanos.

Two years later, Pelosi's Democrats passed in the House of Representatives the HR-6 (American Dream and Promise Bill - ADPA). It includes a path to legalization and citizenship for some 2.5 million immigrants, including DREAMers.

Although a senatorial version of the initiative is sponsored by one of the president's closest supporters, South Carolina Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, the bill remains stalled in the Senate.

It is unclear whether the President of the United States has the power to implement immigration reform through an executive order. Even if it did, the idea sparked rejection by prominent members of his party such as Senator Ted Cruz. "There is ZERO constitutional authority for the president to create a path to citizenship," he famously remarked.

But there is a simple and immediate way in which President Trump can clear the smoke screens and demonstrate a tangible change in his attitude towards migrants in general and Mexicans in particular: Announce that he desists from eliminating DACA, restoring acceptance of new applicants and call Republican Senate Leader Mitch McConnell to vote on Bill S-874, the Senate version of HR6. And he can do it today.

A C R A M E N TO , Calif. -- The California Federation of Teachers is urging Gov. Gavin Newsom to delay physical reopening of schools and direct districts to go to distance learning until COVID-19 infections drop and safeguards are in place.

On Monday, both Los Angeles and San Diego Unified School Districts announced they will offer distance learning until conditions improve. But other districts such as Marin County are planning to go back to inperson learning 5 days a week.

CFT sent a letter to the governor asking that campuses remain closed until the state and county see a reduction in new COVID-19 cases for 14 consecutive days. They also want the state to provide personal protective equipment, testing, contact tracing and isolation systems.

"The state needs to step in and give direction, provide these resources, provide this testing, and set standards; not say this is what you should do, but do what you want," Freitas said.

ES MOINES, Iowa -- The corporate meat industry is the target of a new campaign that asks consumers to boycott products from large operations. Those behind the effort point to recent situations in Iowa as examples of longstanding issues that need to be resolved, and cite a wide range of issues including worker safety, animal welfare, environmental impact and consumer health.

The "Boycott Big Meat" campaign is being led by a number of organizations, including the Organic Consumers Association. That group's international director, Ronnie Cummins, said they hope the power of consumers gets the attention of policymakers, as well as the industry itself.

"We're calling on consumers to think when they pull out their wallet and to stop buying meat from the big meat companies," Cummins said.

Instead, the campaign suggests consumers turn to items produced in ways that aren't as harmful to the environment and come from smaller, independent operations where safety and fair wages are a priority.

ACRAMENTO, Calif. -- California spends $4 billion - $5 billion a year on health care for lowincome kids, but some of the plans are falling down on the job, according to a new report out this week.

Researchers from the nonprofit Children Now say 40% of Medi-Cal health plans don't meet minimum standards, and 70% don't do enough to ensure parents can access care for their kids.

Mike Odeh, director of health policy at Children Now, said some counties have better plans available than others.

"That fundamentally means that where a child lives and which plan they're enrolled in determines whether or not they get the care they need," Odeh said. "The way it should work is that every child in Medi-Cal gets the care that they need, especially the preventive and primary care that is guaranteed under law."

For example, in most northern California counties, less than 10% of babies get a developmental screening.

The Newsom administration is about to start negotiating contracts for plans that would take effect in 2024. Advocates want the state to make future payments contingent on better performance.

Odeh said he would like the state to

set a mandatory minimum spending level per child for preventive care - and press for real results.

"We could provide incentives on plans that improve health outcomes for kids or reduce health disparities," he said.

"And we need to hold health plans accountable, which means meaningfully making monetary consequences tied to whether or not health plans fall below minimum performance standards."

Parents can find out how well their county's health plan is doing by checking out the report, which is available on Children Now's website.

ndianapolis, IND -- If Willie Sutton were alive, he wouldn’t be robbing banks, more likely he’d be a scam artist, siphoning off a portion of the almost $70 million that Indiana consumers alone have reportedly lost to fraud even before the COVID-19 pandemic opened up a pandora’s box of new scam opportunities.

Reverend David Green, Senior Pastor, Purpose of Life Ministry, shared the experience of a maintenance engineer at his church. Originally from El Salvador,

“At the Federal Trade Commission, we always say the fraudsters follow the headlines,” explained Todd Kossow, Director of the Midwest Region of the FTC. “They take advantage of the major news stories of the day and find new ways to access consumer’s personal financial information. The corona virus pandemic has been no exception to that.”

Kossow’s remarks were delivered at an on-line convening for ethnic media primarily covering Indianapolis and nearby regions. In addition to FTC staff, presenters included representatives from state and local agencies responsible for consumer protection, as well as from non-profits like the AARP, the Better Business Bureau, and others on the frontlines of battling scams and deceptive marketing practices.

“Scammers are like vampires who bleed their victims not just of money but of hope and self-respect,” said conference moderator Sandy Close, director of Ethnic Media Services. Close urged media participants “to shine a light on these activities through your media coverage and your community service.”

Susan Bolin, from the Better Business Bureau, concurred with the need for increased media coverage and involvement. While acknowledging active media participation in Fort Wayne and Evansville, “we still need more help. Just imagine the impact that we can have if every media outlet partnered with us.” Ultimately, Bollin said she wants to make Indianapolis a scam-free zone.

The goal is a daunting one.

Presenters cited several “red flags” typically associated with scams: run out and buy a gift card to make a payment; a money wire transfer is required; an upfront payment is necessary before a prize can be claimed; authentication of your bank account number or verification of your Social Security number as mandatory in order to speed or complete the application or funding process.

Several speakers said that humiliation over being

scammed often discourages victims from reporting what happened. There’s also a sense that trying to recover the money is a hopeless task. This is particularly true with gift card transactions. At least with payments made on credit cards, victims have a bank record to point to in filing a fraud claim. Moreover, victims have a self-interest in reporting scams, Andrew Johnson, Chief of Staff of the FTC’s Division of Consumer Affairs, emphasized “Since July, 2018, In just a two-year period, the FTC mailed $23.6 million to almost 140,000 people in the state of Indiana, which is pretty remarkable,” Johnson said. “Generally, when the FTC settles or wins a case, and we get money that we can return back to consumers, one of the main ways we determine who to send money to, is we look back at our database of who reported to us.”

Several speakers highlighted the debilitating effects of scams that prey on people’s loneliness. While romance scams come readily to mind, scammers also have used a victim to become unwitting money mules, someone who moves money to a third-party.

The use of third parties makes the origin and movement of financial transactions more difficult for authorities to trace.

Such was the case Assistant U.S. Attorney MaryAnn Mindrum described of an elderly woman who was told she’d won the lottery and had to pay fees before she could secure her winnings. She did not win the lottery, lost a substantial amount in so-called fees, “but,” Mindrum explained, “she talked to the scammer for two years!” Mindrum said her office stepped in to end the relationship, extradited the scammer to the U.S. and successfully prosecuted him. The woman was not charged.

It's more important now than ever before to take care of our planet - and it starts with you. There are simple steps you can take this summer season to minimize your impact on oceans and the endangered species who call them home.

Here are seven things you can do to save the seven seas: * Cut down on plastics. Both in your home and out and about, reducing your plastic use is essential to helping improve the health of our oceans.

Instead of using plastic food storage bags, use reusable glass containers. Another easy way to reduce your plastic use daily is to discontinue plastic bottle use and instead use a reusable one that you can fill up right from your tap. * Use reef-safe sunscreen. When shopping for a sunscreen, look for ones without oxybenzone and octinoxate in listed ingredients. These two chemicals are harmful to coral reefs and can cause coral bleaching. Instead, opt for zincbased sunscreens and ones marked "reef-safe."

* Consume sustainable seafood. Sustainable seafood is seafood that is caught or farmed in a way that considers the fish species and wellbeing of the ocean. One of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums' (AZA) accredited aquariums, Monterey Bay Aquarium's Seafood Watch program, provides tips and insights for consumers - including guides for purchasing sustainable seafood and tips for dining out. * Write to your local government. Make your voice heard and write to your local government about ocean conservation during this important election year. Take action and make your voice heard and spread the word about conservation programs. * Spread awareness. As you continue to educate yourself and become more passionate about ocean conservation, spread the word! Follow conservation organizations on social media and share their messages with your friends and family. * Visit/donate to your AZA-accredited facility. Continue to educate yourself and learn about conservation by visiting (virtually or in-person) an accredited member of the Association of Zoos & Aquariums. nvironmental advocates and others who care about clean air and water certainly seem to think the Trump administration has been taking advantage of the distractions of the Coronavirus pandemic and #BlackLivesMatter unrest to scale back environmental rules for the benefit of corporate interests and at the expense of public health.

The Trump administration has been hacking away at environmental rules ever since it took office in 2017. But the recent round of rollbacks started in earnest in late March 2020—just as COVID-19 began to dominate news cycles—when the White House quietly replaced Obama-era fuel economy standards for cars and trucks with weaker ones that allow for more air pollution, froze standards for fine particulates (soot) despite research that a slight bump in regulations could save tens of thousands of lives annually, and eased up on restrictions on the kinds of effluents polluters can release into streams and wetlands.

Adding insult to injury, in early June President Trump issued an executive order waiving parts of the National Environmental Policy Act—the nation’s 50-year-old cornerstone environmental law—to spur the construction of highways, pipelines and other infrastructure projects. Meanwhile, the administration has doubled down on efforts to expand logging and oil drilling in Alaska while proposing to speed up permitting for off-shore fish farms, drop review requirements for liquefied natural gas terminals, and relax mercury pollution standards for power plants. The icing on the cake is that Trump wants to pillage ecosystems beyond our own planet, with a new proposal to mine the moon.

Environmental leaders are crying foul that such moves aren’t only illegal but also put public and environmental health at risk—all

while the nation is distracted by COVID-19 and racial turbulence.

“People right now are hunkered down trying to put food on the table, take care of people who are sick and worry about educating their children at home,” said former Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) chief (under Barack Obama) Gina McCarthy to the Guardian. McCarthy is now head of the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC).

McCarthy added that the federal government is “literally not interested in the law or science [which] is going to become strikingly clear as people look at how the administration is handling Covid-19.”

Environmentalists are also keeping their fingers crossed that Joe Biden becomes President in 2021 and can roll back the rollbacks.

In the meantime, if you would like your voice to be heard, NRDC has made it easy to send comments via its website urging Trump and current EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler to maintain limits on industrial pollution and keep clean car standards on the books.
