ACRAMENO, Calif. -- The Legislature reconvenes this week, and children's advocates are speaking out in favor of a bill to facilitate telehealth during the COVID-19 recovery.

AB 2007 would continue a federal policy instituted in response to the pandemic that lifted some restrictions limiting community clinics' efforts to offer medical appointments via phone or videoconference.

Mayra Alvarez, president of the Children's Partnership, said telehealth will allow more people to be treated.

medical appointments can address barriers to care, drawing in people who live in rural areas, have limited access to transportation or who can't take time off of work. The State Assembly reconvenes Monday, and the state Senate will hold a special COVID-related session on Wednesday.

Alvarez also has urged lawmakers to implement AB 2315, which would improve telehealth in schools, so mentalhealth issues can be

more readily addressed once schools reopen.

"The social-emotional impacts of not being at school every day, of not interacting with friends, of being worried about your parents if they are essential workers - this is going to be an ongoing crisis for us," she said.

The bill requires state agencies to develop guidelines around telehealth for schools. It passed in 2018 but has not been fully funded.

OODLETTSVILLE, Tenn. -- A Tyson chicken plant in Goodlettsville is reporting nearly 300 confirmed cases of the coronavirus among employees, and similar scenarios are popping up across the country where COVID-19 has spread rapidly in meat processing and packing facilities.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says nearly 5,000 cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed among workers nationwide. At least

President Donald Trump recently issued an executive order giving Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue greater authority to handle the response to the global pandemic, as meat shortages have prompted several large grocers, including Costco, to limit the amount of meat customers can purchase.

The CDC has issued guidelines for meatpackers, including six-foot spacing and barriers between workers, but Sherman-Nikolaus points out a huge part of the problem is lack of accountability in the industry.

"There is really no enforcement mechanism or complaint system at this time, and so it makes it hard for workers to be able to report unsafe working conditions," she states.

According to the Tennessee Poultry Association, the state ranks 14th in the nation for chicken production, and workers at five plants process millions of birds each week.

T. PAUL, Minn. -- From devastation in hospitals to fears of infecting family members, health care workers are taking on added stress during the pandemic.

Some Minnesota nurses recently shared how the crisis is affecting their mental wellbeing. A New York City doctor's suicide last month brought to light how overwhelmed health workers might feel right now.

While Minnesota might not see the same impact New York City has, registered nurse Sari Sanchez said that doesn't mean the situation is easy to absorb. Sanchez said she broke down in tears after being informed she would do some COVID-19 shifts at her hospital in the Twin Cities. She said those tears were prompted by concern for her family.

"I'm not worried about myself," Sanchez said. "But I have kids and I don't want my kids to get sick."

Sanchez shared her thoughts during a recent forum hosted by the nonprofit group Mental Health Minnesota. She said after the initial wave of emotions, it has become easier to manage the situation. But the panel noted furloughs and layoffs have created even more anxiety among staff members working for local providers.

Two of the nurses who participated said their employers have made resources available for staff to help cope with the crisis. Children's Minnesota pediatric nurse Alethea Wiberg said connecting with colleagues online has been a big help.

"We have Facebook chat groups between just like my co-workers where we can just kind of all talk about what we're going through," Wiberg said.

But another participant, who works in a smaller setting, said she doesn't have any outlets through her employer, and added the situation wasn't always taken seriously by her superiors.

On a national level, researchers at Purdue University are trying to determine the extent of psychological trauma experienced by critical-care nurses during the pandemic.

The case examines whether the Trump administration lawfully terminated the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program in September 2017.

uenos Aires - The coronavirus lockdown didn’t stop one couple from saving the date, as they opted for a videoconference wedding instead of delaying their big day.

Carolina Gobatto, 33, and Lucas Cullari, 32, had “18 April 2020”, the day of their nuptials, stamped on their wedding rings so they were determined to tie the knot despite quarantine measures in Argentina.

They had been planning their special day since November and had planned to exchange their vows in a Buenos Aires registry office, followed by a church ceremony and a party to celebrate.

But a month before their big day the country was put into lockdown because of the coronavirus pandemic.

“We realized that it was not going to be because even if they raised it, it was not good to have an event with so many people. There would be 50 people in the same space,” Carolina said in a video interview.

The bride-to-be, a marketing graduate who works in a cosmetic laboratory, said they didn’t want to change the date as the day had a strong meaning for them.

She had the idea of contacting a company specializing in ceremonies which agreed to do theirs online.

Although it was not legally binding, the exchanging of vows held a symbolic value for the happy couple.

Their master of ceremonies Javier Gerenschtein said he had never conducted a wedding ceremony online before.

“What we do are symbolic ceremonies, which point much more to the human part of the couple and not to the law or religion,” he added.

His company Tu Ceremonia (your ceremony) plans the speech he or his colleagues will give, the music and the participation of witnesses and family.

He sent the couple separate questionnaires to find out about their story and used the two versions together in the wedding speech.

The bride and groom decided to keep their change of plans as a surprise for their guests.

“We told them: on Saturday at 8pm we’ll do a Zoom on the subject of marriage.

Este fue el proceso: a la novia se le ocurrió contactar con alguna persona o empresa que se dedicara a preparar ceremonias y aceptara hacerlas por internet, por más que la suya, al menos por el momento, no pudiera tener valor civil o religioso, pero sí simbólico.

"Obvio que quiero seguir riéndome y compartiendo toda la vida con él,” lanzó ella.

De primeras ya había descartado que alguien cercano pudiera ejercer de maestro de ceremonias y, tras bucear en la red, encontró la solución.

"Un amigo, o se ríe, o se emociona, o no sabe qué decir... nadie se va a sentir cómodo en ese papel. Me contacté con Javier y le dije... 'mira, la verdad es que no sé si alguna vez sucedió esto.

Yo te lo propongo,’” evoca.

EL "CEREMONY PLANNER" VIRTUAL Hace casi dos décadas que Javier Gerenschtein decidió compaginar su profesión, la abogacía, con la organización de ceremonias.

Y hoy ya encabeza un equipo de cinco "maestros de ceremonia" con quienes se reparte eventos en Argentina y otros países.

No obstante, si el COVID-19 no hubiera hecho acto de presencia, esta semana habría viajado a Barcelona para oficiar el casamiento de una pareja de argentinos que querían que un compatriota los 'casara' allá, pero todo quedó pospuesto.

"Lo que hacemos son ceremonias simbólicas,

So, it's really 'all hands on deck' for us."

According to a recent study from UCLA and The University of Arizona, the rate of COVID-19 per 1,000 people is four times higher on Indian reservations compared with other parts of the country.

he vast majority of goods we use and enjoy have spent at least some time traveling on cargo ships. In fact, such ships facilitate more than 80 percent of global trade. Unfortunately, these huge ships that ply the world’s oceans and waterways burn lots of fossil fuels—some individual ships burn upwards of 100 tons of oil a day. If the global cargo shipping industry were a country, it would rank sixth overall in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions (higher than South Korea, Iran and Canada).

Cargo ships have several other negative environmental effects as well. They also emit large amounts of fine particles, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide—all bad for us and our environment. As if the emissions weren’t bad enough, cargo ships also run into marine life at an alarming rate: Ship strikes are one of the leading causes of death for many of the world’s whale species.

But as bad as all this sounds, cargo shipping is one of the most efficient and ecofriendly ways to get items from point A to B. Big ships emit only about half as much CO2 as trains, one-fifth as much as trucks and only one-fiftieth of what airplanes would emit to transport the same load.

Nonetheless, environmental concerns continue to dog cargo shipping. In response, shipping companies have started to employ innovative strategies to save fuel and reduce pollution, such as so-called “slow steaming” whereby ships can burn less fuel and reduce emissions by traveling more slowly than usual.

Transitioning to cleaner fuels—such as liquified natural gas (LNG)—is another obvious short-term solution, but it can only get us so far. Another band-aid fix is the installation of exhaust scrubbers, which spray a fine mist of water to remove pollutants from ships’ exhaust before they can make their

way up into the atmosphere. But scrubbers require energy, which leads to more fuel being burned. Also, the waste water they generate is sometimes dumped into the ocean, which negatively affect marine organisms.

Longer term, environmental advocates are hoping for the wholesale decarbonization of the shipping industry. Plans are on the table for clean-burning hydrogen-powered cargo ships. Meanwhile, the first electricallypropelled cargo ship, Norway’s Yara Birkeland, is nearing completion. This 260-foot long vessel will carry chemicals and fertilizer on a relatively short 30-mile route.

Despite these advances, cargo shipping will continue releasing large amounts of pollutants into the atmosphere for the foreseeable future. Though battery-powered ships are finally moving off the drawing board and into the water, their range is simply too limited to allow for mass replacement of existing cargo fleets. The energy density of batteries will need to increase by a factor of ~30 before such replacements can begin taking place en masse. Given the likely slow pace of change, buying local is probably the average citizen’s best option for reducing shipping-based emissions in the short term.

a gran mayoría de los productos que utilizamos y disfrutamos han pasado al menos un tiempo viajando en buques de carga. De hecho, tales barcos facilitan más del 80 por ciento del comercio mundial.

Desafortunadamente, estos enormes barcos que surcan los océanos y las vías fluviales del mundo queman muchos combustibles fósiles; algunos barcos individuales queman más de 100 toneladas de petróleo al día. A largo plazo, los defensores del medio ambiente esperan la descarbonización al por mayor de la industria naviera. Los planes están sobre la mesa para los buques de carga de combustión limpia que funcionan con hidrógeno. Mientras tanto, el primer buque de carga propulsado eléctricamente, el noruego Yara Birkeland, está a punto de completarse.

exico - Mother's Day, a sacred date that Mexicans celebrate on May 10, hinders the fight against the COVID-19 by the authorities in Mexico, which in turn has led them to order closures of flower shops, patisseries and even cemeteries to avoid festivities and crowds.

The actions of the authorities surprised Adrián Luna, who went to the Mercado de Jamaica, the most iconic flower selling site in the country's capital, where hundreds of citizens were making panic purchases before the Government of Mexico City closed it on Thursday May 7.

"I do not agree, why would you think? It is a very important date for all Mexicans, for many people in many countries, because it is tradition, this is how our parents taught us, this is how we follow it, we have to continue with this," said Luna.

Mexico reaches its most critical week of the coronavirus, with 26,025 cases accumulated and 2,507 deaths from COVID-19.

The Ministry of Health has estimated the maximum point of infection on May 8, which coincides with the weekend of shopping and celebrations for Mother's Day. Given the risk of crowds, mayors in Mexico City, and municipalities of other entities, such as the State of Mexico and Nuevo León, have ordered the closure of cemeteries, patisseries, and flower shops.

Even the head of government of the capital, Claudia Sheinbaum, announced this Wednesday that she would postpone Mother's Day until July 10, so this May 10 there will only be a virtual festival with mariachis, concerts, and movies on the Internet.

"This May 10 we celebrate at a healthy distance, of course as a family, but at a healthy distance: phone calls, video calls to mothers, grandmothers, and by July 10 we can already get together as a family to celebrate better," Sheinbaum declared.

Ante el riesgo de aglomeraciones, alcaldías en Ciudad de México, y municipios de otras entidades, como Estado de México y Nuevo León, han ordenado el cierre de cementerios, pastelerías y florerías.

Desde entonces, los mexicanos celebran esta fecha de forma casi religiosa en un país con 32,7 millones de madres, calcula el Instituto Nacional de Geografía y Estadística (INEGI).

Incluso, la jefa de Gobierno de la capital, Claudia Sheinbaum, anunció este miércoles que aplazaría el Día de las Madres hasta el 10 de julio, por lo que este 10 de mayo solo habrá un festival virtual con mariachis, conciertos y películas por Internet.

"Este 10 de mayo celebramos a sana distancia, claro que en familia, pero con sana distancia: llamadas por teléfono, videollamadas a madres, abuelas, y para el 10 de julio ya podemos juntarnos en familia para poder celebrarnos mejor,” declaró.
