Hilbert Morales EL OBSERVADOR So 100 days have passed...and you have not lived up to your campaign promise to create jobs for the underemployed and unemployed. I projected that would happen because you have always had more than enough wealth to pay for what you wanted. You had no problem with having enough capital to be in business because your family provided you with the millions needed to 'go into business'. You have never earned the satisfaction of 'bootstrapping' any of your businesses from the get-go.

So I have devised an economic experiment for you to consider: FORGET THAT WALL. Do not leave a TRUMP LEGACY which includes building that wall. Recall the Zeigfried military barrier (a wall) between France and German. General George Patton, who you admire, said, “The Zeigfried fortifications is a monument to military and political stupidity.”

Nazi Germany's mobile Panzer Divisions just made an end run through Belgium to avoid direct confrontation with the French military manning their immobile Zeigfried Line...and very swiftly reached Paris and occupied France.

THAT WALL reveals an immense double standard in your personal view of America. AMERICA IS ALREADY A GREAT NATION. America's diverse residents would much rather see available resources allocated towards rebuilding infrastructures- especially in transportation essential to America's domestic economy.

Begin with the U.S. highways, overpasses, bridges, harbors, canals, and airports. Understand that immigrants enter America through all points of entry especially international airports and places such as American Samoa.

Rapid Transit is important to America's domestic economy.

Begin by proposing a HIGH SPEED INTERCONTINENTAL RAIL SYSTEM WHICH CAN GO FROM THE EAST COAST TO THE WEST COAST- AND FROM MINNEAPOLIS-ST. PAUL TO NEW ORLEANS as an alternative to air travel. Former President Abraham Lincoln, during the 1860's, proposed a similar intercontinental rail line which connected California to America's East Coast...which ended up connecting the East with the West.

Incidentally, Lincoln also created the 'Land grant universities' which enhanced basic research and education.

Understand that these sorts of projects will put most 'middle class' folks back to work, which means that these folks may again earn wages which will be spent to purchase all sorts of goods and services. Understand that by creating these millions of meaningful jobs, America's Consumer Economy will become very healthy and vigorous again. Understand that any and all investments in

America's infrastructures will yield 'multiple returns on investments made.'

Mr. President: I am pleased that you admitted that being America's President is a job much more difficult than imagined.

As the current President of all America's residents, know that 'We, The People' are the base for the full faith and credit of the U.S. Treasury. United, we are the most powerful force on this earth. Through your ability to 'make better deals', America will rise to higher levels of prosperity via innovation and creativity, especially when its education system is supported well enough to enable those who teach pre-K through grade 12 to own their own home in those communities where they practice their profession.

The same consideration applies to first-responders...police, firefighters, and emergency medical service personnel.

Mr. President...Using the 'profitable bottom line' paradigm, today's capitalistic decision making traditions need to include considerations of 'societal stewardship' which enable inclusion of so many social costs which are currently not considered in many strategic planning circles. Societal stewardship simply means that all costs, even those of personal pain and suffering are considered by corporate planners. Today the only two ways to redistribute wealth is through taxation and philanthropy. Corporations which do not pay their fair share of taxes end up being subsidized by those of us who do, with the result that our domestic economy's infrastructure is paid for by low income folks who do so reliably.

America's residents need a living

wage standard which will enable and support the consumerism that is the basis of a vigorous American Consumer Economy.

All businesses need clients who have discretionary funds to spend as consumers.

Mr. President....A trained labor force which is healthy is essential to any society and its enterprises.

Therefore, a national health care system must have the mission of supplying health care services.

For example, this means having sufficient medical personnel who are trained knowledge workers in all 2,600 current medical career paths. This medical care effort is best created and managed by use of the 'public utility service model paradigm' applied to its basic public health and primary care medical services. Competitive profit oriented market decision making models, first applied by former President Reagan, are not appropriate.

When a human being has a health crisis, the appropriate medical care service must be available immediately; there is no time to compare competitor's credentials or prices; all efforts must be directed towards having the appropriate differential diagnostic expertise, which specifically defines the disease process and then undertakes the corrective actions needed by that unique patient/client.

The 2010 Affordable Care Act was a step towards having available health care for all. Rather than 'repeal and replace' the current ACA, re-allocate your considerable organizational talents towards improvements and implementations needed to sustain a very healthy well-nourished population. A national housing program would be

a good beginning to dealing with homelessness, mental health and behavioral health challenges faced by many low income individuals and their families.

Mr. President....Rather than relying on Executive Orders to get things changed, make an effort to propose national programs in education, law enforcement, and judicial systems which enable all Americans to have access to the 'good life' here in America.

Do not waste your time, energy and resources dismantling and destroying, but rather, use the available creativity and innovation to improve the lot of all America's residents. America is already a great super-power, but it can be made even greater and better by innovative improvements. This Democracy, which has been a work in progress since its Founding Fathers debated, negotiated, and wrote its Declaration of Independence and its Constitution is the basic law of this land.

Mr. President...You are the Leader of the most significant Democracy on this planet. You still have time to craft a legacy that will endure. Begin by taking care of America's people who, through a self-selection immigrant process, are the most resilient, innovative, and creative force this world has ever experienced. Your opportunities to create World Peace and tranquility lie before you.

All Americans will support your efforts to create and support peace and prosperity which benefits the entire world. May God bless you as our President and this American Democracy.

LOS CALORES DE MAYO Por José López Zamorano La Red Hispana Dos sucesos aparentemente inconexos ocurridos alrededor de los primeros 100 días del nuevo gobierno, arrojan luz sobre lo que aguarda en el horizonte político del país para los próximos cuatro años: las negociaciones del presupuesto suplementario del año fiscal 2017 y las movilizaciones del Primero de Mayo.

Conscientes de las divisiones ideológicas al interior del Partido Republicano, los demócratas capitalizaron su posición como minoría, tanto en la Cámara de Representantes como en el Senado, para prácticamente imponer su voluntad de negarle al presidente los fondos para el muro fronterizo y para la llamada fuerza de deportación.

Aunque la iniciativa de gasto incluye 1,500 millones de dólares en seguridad fronteriza, afuera quedaron los recursos para esas dos de las más importantes promesas electorales del presidente, aunque la Casa Blanca mantiene la meta de buscar los fondos en el presupuesto regular del año fiscal 2018 que inicia el primero de octubre.

Los demócratas lograron además minimizar los recortes a la Agencia de Protección Ambiental (EPA), obtuvieron recursos para apoyar el programa de Medicaid en Puerto Rico y lograron la extensión de la cobertura médica para los trabajadores mineros, entre otros.

El precedente es relevante porque la misma fórmula usada por los demócratas en las negociaciones presupuestales, podría repetirse en las próximas etapas

de otra dos de las promesas del presidente, el desmantelamiento de Obamacare y la reforma fiscal. A rio revuelto, ganancia de pescadores, dice el dicho.

El segundo dato significativo fueron las movilizaciones del Primero de Mayo, las cuales mostraron una singular alianza no sólo entre trabajadores y migrantes, sino una confluencia multirracial en demanda de mejores condiciones de vida, un trato justo y fin a la persecución de familias migrantes trabajadoras que no han cometido crímenes.

Desde Los Ángeles a Nueva York, pasando por ciudades como Houston, Chicago, Richmond y el Distrito de Columbia, miles de personas pidieron apasionadamente al Congreso y a la Casa Blanca buscar una reforma migratoria integral que reconozca las contribuciones de los

migrantes y les permita una vida libre del temor a la deportación.

Fue particularmente notable ser testigo, en el corazón de la plaza de la Libertad en Washington, de los llamados de un grupo de jóvenes afroamericanos a la alcaldesa Muriel Bowser, para declarar a la capital del país con un santuario para inmigrantes. La comunidad afro americana y la latina no siempre han estado hombro con hombro en sus respectivas luchas.

Al final de la jornada del primero de mayo, el liderazgo demócrata de la Cámara de Representantes y del Senado se solidarizaron con los trabajadores y migrantes.

No hubo celebraciones de victoria, pero sí un reconocimiento de que existe una hoja de ruta clara para el curso de acción en los próximos años.

Sacred Heart Nativity Middle School Strives to Help Local Children Excel be prepared for the future, she knows how successful she can be and that comes from Sacred Heart Nativity,” Aguirre said.

Even though Diaz is happy to soon start a new cycle attending her dream school Notre Dame, she’s also sad to leave her classmates and teachers whom she considers her family.

“Being in the school feels like everybody is related and we have retreats and with every retreat we get closer and closer and I feel like it’s hard to know that soon we will

go on our separate ways,” Diaz said.

Sacred Heart Nativity’s graduates have a higher completion rate than other schools. The high school completion rate is closer to 100 percent of the students that graduate on time from high school, about 70 percent of the students are graduating from college within four years, according to Arriola. “Our students are absolutely succeeding in terms of graduating from high school on time with much higher grades and completing college at much higher rates.”

Parents, students and community members were all welcomed to this celebration where the students had the opportunity to give a tour of their school as well as to share their testimonies.

Father Sheedy was a long time pastor and founder of Sacred Heart Nativity Middle School and education advocate for low income students. Currently, there are 117 students enrolled in grades 6th to 8th and there are over 400 alumni that the school continues to work with, according to Sonya Arriola, president of Sacred Heart Nativity School.

“He [Father Sheedy] envisioned a school that would serve this community and would put low-income first generation college bound youth towards college completion,” Arriola said. Therefore, “Father Mateo was instrumental in funding many organizations here in San Jose, like Downtown college prep and Rocket Ship Schools.”

Eylenne Diaz, and 8th grader at Sacred Heart Nativity School is an example of Father Sheedy’s purpose. Diaz is the first one in her family to attend Sacred Heart and she was able to fulfill one of her many goals as a student, being accepted to her dream school, Notre Dame High School.

“It prepared me educationally very well, all the teachers are really accessible, you

could reach them and we also have the homework club where teachers are still here after school and they can help us out,” Diaz said.

However, the students are not the only ones that are very involved in their school activities, parents are a big part of their children’s education. “I learned that the school really involves parents in the education of our children, they give us the tools, they have many workshops,” said Jessica Aguirre, president of the Parents Volunteer program at Sacred Heart.

Aguirre is a proud mother three children.

Her oldest daughter attended Sacred Heart Nativity and was admitted into Presentation High School and she’s currently attending college. Her younger sons are both Sacred Heart students and are also aiming to attend college after high school.

Aguirre first heard of Sacred Heart through her friends. “Many of my friends talk about it and I wanted to see for myself if it was what I was looking for, they talked about the values that they have in the school, also the academics that many of us are looking for that our children can be very successful in high school,” Aguirre said.

However, Aguirre said that she believes her daughter would have still gone to college if she was a public high school student but it wouldn’t have been the same for her. “I believe she would be attending college too, but not in the way she's doing, she’s very strong academically but she also knows what her values are, she knows she has to

CÓMO PRESENTAR UNA QUEJA EN CONTRA DE SU SEGURO DE SALUD O DE MEDICAMENTOS DE MEDICARE Greg Dill Después de haber ejercido en el área farmacéutica durante muchos años, a menudo platico con la gente acerca de sus medicamentos recetados de Medicare, o los planes de la Parte D de Medicare.

Las personas con la Parte D por lo general comparten conmigo acerca de su farmacia o farmacéutico favorito, o cómo su plan ofrece medicamentos a precios económicos.

A veces reportan problemas con un plan de la Parte D, que van desde el costo de los medicamentos hasta la dificultad de obtener un medicamento específico que su médico les recetó.

El primer paso para corregir los problemas es siempre ponerse en contacto con su plan de medicamentos (la información de contacto se encuentra en la parte posterior de su tarjeta de medicamentos). Una llamada al plan normalmente resolverá su problema. Si eso no funciona, puede presentar una queja.

BEING A CAREGIVER, DOESN’T MEAN YOU HAVE TO DO IT ALONE Family members turned caregivers undoubtedly face a host of new responsibilities when it comes time to assist an aging, sick or disabled loved one. Bay Area resident, Mauricio Rivera, takes care of his mother, Daisy Somoza, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2011. Since that time, her mental capacity continued to decrease, so Mauricio and his husband moved her into their San Francisco home.

With Daisy’s around-the-clock care needs presenting Mauricio – who also works full-time – with a multitude of new challenges, assistance via On Lok Lifeways has been a lifesaver. Every weekday morning, an On Lok driver picks up and transports Daisy to the 30th Street PACE Center, one of the Bay Area’s seven On Lok Lifeways PACE Centers. At the Center, Daisy has access to everything from physician-driven medical care and health specialists to healthy, cooked meals and myriad personal care opportunities.

When Daisy is not at 30th Street PACE Center, an On Lok Lifeways specialist visits their home to deliver prepared meals and help with such daily activities

as dressing, bathing, toileting, etc. As a result, Mauricio has developed a special relationship with the On Lok Lifeways home care team and even considers them family.

Like most caregivers, Mauricio never anticipated he’d be in his current situation. The good news is that taking on this role doesn’t require someone to be a nursing expert or a superhero in order to be a good caregiver. With the right help and support, one can be an effective and loving caregiver without having to sacrifice their own life in the process.

MUJER PEQUEÑITA, TALENTO GIGANTE LITTLE WOMAN, GIANT TALENT Mario Jiménez Castillo Translation by Martha Graniello El Observador Recently, I had the wonderful opportunity to chat with Briana Renée, one of the stars of the popular reality show “Little Woman LA”, that airs Tuesday nights on Lifetime cable channel. This reality show, which is in its sixth season, has become very popular, not only in the United States, but also in other countries, Latin America for example. A show filled with drama, conflicts and reconciliation. But most importantly, it creates awareness of the great discrimination that people of short stature sometimes endure. Situations that shouldn't exist in the community of short/ small people, which are called “little people” in English, and “personas pequeñitas” in Spanish. Discriminatory words and offensive names should be avoided and eliminated from our vocabulary.

En fechas recientes, tuve la grata oportunidad de charlar con Briana Renée, una de las estrellas del popular reality show “Little Woman LA”, que se transmite a través del canal Lifetime, los días martes por la noche. Este reality show que ya va en su sexta temporada se ha vuelto cada vez más popular, no sólo en Estados Unidos, sino también en otros países como en Latinoamérica por ejemplo. Palabras discriminatorias y adjetivos ofensivos deben ser evitados y eliminados de nuestro vacabulario.

Briana mide 3’8”, tres pies y ocho pulgadas, y según nos comentó, esto no ha sido un impedimento para lograr sus sueños, esta hermosa mujer pequeñita es todo un derroche de virtudes ¡canta, baila, modela, actúa! y para mayor sorpresa de sus fans, también habla español. Briana cuenta con miles de fans en América Latina, en Colombia, México, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Brasil, El Salvador, Costa Rica y República Dominicana, es ya toda una sensación, no solamente por los dramas del reality; se

ha robado el corazón de miles de fans, por su lucha diaria, su empeño y sus deseos de triunfar y alcanzar el éxito en su carrera.

CALIFORNIA SENATE LEADER INTRODUCES VOLUNTEERS DONATE 85,000 HOURS TO SUPPORT LIBRARY PROGRAMS 100 PERCENT CLEAN ENERGY MEASURE San José Public Library Celebrates its Volunteer during National Volunteer Week

San José, Calif., – The San José Public Library (SJPL) celebrates its volunteers’ diverse talents and expertise year round, but its during National Volunteer Week, April 23 - April 29, that library staff take it up a notch to recognize and thank library volunteers for lending their time, talent, voice and support to causes they care about in their community.

Volunteerism has been increasing at all 24 library locations: last year, 2,967 volunteers donated 85,000 hours to support library programs and services; that’s 300 more volunteers and 7,700 more service hours than donated in the prior year.

SACRAMENTO – California Senate President pro Tempore Kevin de León (D-Los Angeles) on Tuesday May 2nd introduced Senate Bill 100, The California Clean Energy Act of 2017, which puts the state on the path to 100 percent clean, renewable energy by 2045.

“California’s experience over the last decade offers hard evidence that we can dramatically expand clean energy while also growing our economy and putting people to work,” Senator de León said. “This measure will ensure that California remains the world’s clean energy superpower and that we lead the nation in addressing the threat of climate change.”

BILL SUMMARY SB 100, the California Clean Energy Act of 2017 does all of the following: 1. Establishes an overall state target of 100% clean energy for California by 2045 by directing the CA Public Utilities Commission, CA Energy Commission, and Air Resources Board to adopt policies and requirements to achieve total reliance on renewable energy and zero carbon resources by that date.

2. Accelerates SB 350’s 50% mandate for clean renewable energy from 2030 to 2026 and establishes a new RPS benchmark of 60% by 2030 to ensure more clean energy in the California grid sooner.

3. Establishes new policies for energy companies to capture uncontrolled methane emissions from dairies, landfills and waste

water treatment plants and use these clean renewable fuels to replace natural gas.

4. Authorizes investor owned utilities to invest in cleaner transportation fuels such as hydrogen or waste methane gas from dairies for heavy duty trucks to replace dirty diesel fuels, provided there are no other cleaner options such as zero emission vehicles available.

BACKGROUND California has one of the cleanest economies in the world. Since we passed AB 32 in 2006, we’ve grown our economy faster than the national average while reducing carbon intensity by nearly 40% compared to 1990.

We’ve also lowered energy bills, improved air quality and created thousands of new, high wage jobs in the clean energy sector.

California already has the most ambitious climate targets in the world and the most aggressive renewable energy targets of any economy of its size. We lead the nation in renewable energy generation, clean tech venture capital investment, patent creation and clean car technology.

In 2015, The Legislature passed SB 350, The Clean Energy and Pollution Reduction Act (De Leon et al), which set a 50% clean energy standard by 2030. That bill also set new requirements for doubling energy efficiency and for wide scale transportation electrification deployment. Senate Bill 32, the Global Warming Solutions Act of 2016 (Pavley), requires the state to reduce overall greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2030.

When asked, 96% of volunteers said they recommend SJPL as a place to volunteer.

The commitment library staff have to ensure volunteers succeed has tremendous benefits for library customers. Last year alone: • 5,800 attendees improved their English language skills at the library’s ESL Conversation Clubs

• Reading to Children volunteers provided over 6,500 critical early literacy experiences • STEAM volunteers led workshops and classes where 6,900 participants gained critical 21st century skills • 3,500 attendees met their academic goals at Library Homework Clubs Every year, each library branch and unit selects a volunteer they want to acknowledge as their Volunteer of the Year. From these nominees, one volunteer is selected for system-wide recognition. As always we recognize the great contributions and efforts of all our winners. MAY DAY MARCHES BRING VOICES OUT

Thousands gather to voice their support for immigrants, workers

those dragons give off. People took to the creation, taking selfies with it for a good while before the march began.

Out in full force where the various unions, handing out shirts and signs for support of both their employees in general and specifically those that are undocumented.

The focus for this May Day was channeled through the signs strewn around, which read things like, “WE STAND WITH TESLA WORKERS IN GERMANY”, “BLACK WORKER JUSTICE”, “¡DERECHOS REPRODUCTIVOS SON DERECHOS HUMANOS!” (“Reproductive rights are human rights!”), and “Immigrant Women Rising”. What can be finalized from the different groups attending was that there were more than enough reasons to march on Monday.

Beginning at around 3:30pm the group, led by a flatbed truck carrying drummers who kept a rhythm going, began its journey

MAY 5 - 11, 2017 from the Alum Rock down through Santa Clara Street where they would eventually end at a rally by SAP Center, 3 miles from their starting point. By 4:30pm the march was passing San Jose City Hall, with many employees and onlookers snapping photos and those on the street cheering.

A group held up a paper “Alternative Wall”, peppered with many of the noteworthy phrases and quotes from the Trump administration and their supporters, such as “Bad Hombres” and “3 million illegal voters” written across it. Soon enough, people went at it with sticks to break it down.

As a movement, this May Day march proved that people can use their voices, their numbers and their local community to provide a base for protesting the current agenda and mind frame of the Trump Administration, which is becoming increasingly anti-immigrant.

“May Day” for the year 2017 was unique because it brought all of the anxieties of the first 100 days of the new Trump Administration to the forefront.

Immigration, economy, and employment were all key ingredients to why and how thousands across the region and world marched.

In San Jose the HQ for the march on Monday was the Mexican Heritage Plaza off Alum Rock and King Road. The pre-march activities and gathering of people began around noon as a celebration of diversity and support as people of all ages and colors gathered to sing, rap, and speak their opinions about what the march meant to them. Some took to the stage to sing protest songs, others poetic jabs at the current White House. Some not as awash in poetry and straight to the point.

Here in the Bay Area, San Francisco, Oakland, and San Jose were some of the cities which showcased the largest gatherings to support May Day, or Labor Day as it is known across the world.

One group brought a menacing looking worm with the face and arms of President Trump, carrying it above them like a traditional dragon from Chinese New Years festivities, minus the respectable imagery

SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CA – There may be no better place to experience over 150-years of agricultural history than Santa Clara County’s Martial Cottle Park.

The rich history will be on display at the Martial Cottle Park Spring Celebration Saturday, May 6th from 10am to 3pm.

The event will feature a peek at the past with restored vintage farm equipment and gleaming automobiles dating back to the days of the “Valley of Heart’s Delight.”

meet farm animals up close.

Adults will learn too with gardening and other Spring planting demonstrations and everyone will be able enjoy a selection of fresh organic produce for sale in the park.

Admission to the Martial Cottle Spring Celebration is free. Vehicle parking is 6-dollars, however public transit or biking to the event is highly encouraged.

Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition will be on-site providing complimentary bike valet service for all cyclists.

The Santa Clara County Parks and Recreation Department has provided recreational opportunities, beautiful parks and precious natural resources for Santa Clara County residents for more than 50 years. LBGTQ GROUPS PREPARE FOR EXECUTIVE ORDER ON "RELIGIOUS FREEDOM"

CARSON CITY, Nev. -- Today is the National Day of Prayer, and LGBTQ groups are bracing for an executive order President Trump is expected to sign today that would lift some Obama-era protections for people in the LGBTQ community in the name of "religious freedom.”

A previous version of the order, leaked a few months ago, contained exemptions from anti-discrimination laws for individuals and organizations that claim religious or moral opposition to things like transgender identity, same-sex marriage and premarital sex.

Mark Snyder, director of communications with the Equality Federation, said the order is very broad and could lead to unintended consequences.

"It's wide ranging,” Snyder said. "The religious exemption would protect and support discrimination in hiring, providing public services, in health care and beyond."

The leaked version of the order said,

MAY 5 - 11, 2017 "Americans and their religious organizations will not be coerced by the federal government into participating in activities that violate their conscience.”

Snyder said that could give a federal employee, for example, the right to refuse to process a marriage license for a same-sex couple. He said it's possible federally funded adoption agencies could refuse to place children with same-sex or unmarried couples, and homeless shelters that get federal dollars could turn away LGBTQ teens.

Snyder said he worries it would give new political power to certain groups.

"It also provides an unprecedented exemption from the IRS tax code,” he said, "It allows churches and nonprofits to use tax-free dollars to engage in previously impermissible political activities - endorsing candidates as long as those activities are focused on opposing LGBT people."

Trump has already lifted Obama-era guidelines that encouraged schools to allow transgender students to use the bathroom of their choice.

Two new implementation memos released by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in February outlined implementation of a pair of executive orders signed by President Trump in January, which called for ramping up immigration enforcement activities. (These policies are different than the proposed travel ban affecting majority-Muslim countries, which have been halted by federal courts.)

For children already in the country with an unauthorized parent, these orders mean they face, more immediately than before, the anticipation and possible reality of losing that parent’s presence in their lives. When parents are detained and/or deported, their children may experience emotional distress, economic instability, fears about their family stability, or even permanent family separation. These adverse childhood experiences can hinder a child’s healthy development. The combination of multiple adverse experiences over time can harm children’s physical and mental health and seriously impact their well-being as adults.

Since 2013, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has operated under

specific guidelines that provided some protections to parents or legal guardians of minor children, possibly mitigating the harm caused by some of these experiences.

However, questions remain as to whether this guidance still applies.

While there have been no large-scale studies on the long-term effects of parental detention and deportation on child wellbeing, we can draw parallels to the effects of parental incarceration. For young children (ages 6 to 11), having a parent who has been incarcerated is associated with having emotional difficulties, low school engagement, and behavioral and academic problems in school. Older youth (ages 12 to 17) also have a greater likelihood of problems in school. Children of all ages whose parents have been incarcerated are at increased risk of facing a larger number of other adverse childhood experiences. Again, these kinds of experiences, especially when they are cumulative, are associated with the kind of sustained or extreme stress that can lead to dysfunction, disease, and early mortality.

Children with unauthorized immigrant parents face many challenges, and these recent changes will likely add more. As our country strives to come to a consensus on immigration reform, it is critical to keep children’s well-being as our priority.

Even though pesticides may take an environmental toll, isn’t it worth it given how many more mouths we can feed thanks to their use?

The advent of new technologies coming out of World War II led agricultural researchers to start experimenting with new classes of chemicals they could use to boost agricultural production. As human populations swelled, these “advances” were applied around the world so farmers could grow more food to feed the hungry masses and stave off widespread famine. This transition from essentially organic farming practices to what we now consider “conventional” (that is, aided by chemicals) has been dubbed “The Green Revolution.” But “green” in the name doesn’t mean it’s been good for the environment.

Chemical fertilizers are synthetic or inorganic materials added to soil to aid in plant life.

Pesticides kill insects or other organisms that are harmful to crops, while herbicides kill any unwelcomed vegetation that may affect their growth. According to data from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), American farmers use upwards of a billion pounds of pesticides every year. Meanwhile, the United Nations reports that globally we use about five times that.

Indeed, the widespread adoption of these synthetic fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides has done a great job at boosting crop efficiency to feed more and more of us. For example, India was on the brink of a mass famine in the 1960s due to rapid population growth. Using the techniques of the green revolution, Indian farmers were able to grow enough produce and rice to stave off widespread starvation. Another advantage of pesticide use in India and elsewhere has been the prevention of disease, because pesticides kill insects carrying viruses that could be

However, pesticides not only kill the pests but also the natural enemies of those pests.

In nature, everything is balanced out. Indeed, there is no free lunch, as pests respond to treatment by breeding stronger offspring that are resistant to these chemicals, and with natural predators gone, these pests will quickly multiply, which is why the need for pesticides to kill these pests keeps increasing.

Furthermore, persistent organic pollutants, also known as “POPs,” are highly toxic pesticides and chemicals that do not decompose. They poison non-target organisms in the environment because they are passed through the food chain (bioaccumulate). Consumption of POPs disrupts the endocrine system and is linked to cancer and infertility in humans.

Pesticides also take a toll on our environment, contaminating water and soil. Along with insects, pesticides are also toxic to fish, birds, frogs and more.

Pesticide use is very controversial and should be taken seriously. While here at home, the EPA has banned many pesticides that are harmful to our environment and our health (though the battle for safer food rages on), in many other countries agricultural oversight and environmental regulations are nonexistent or unenforced. Fortunately, we can all be part of the solution by eschewing conventionally grown foods and opting for organic varieties whenever we can. While growing your own food is one sure way to know that what you’re eating is safe, you can also find an increasingly large amount of organic food in your local supermarket, let alone at a Whole Foods near you. Another great way to eat healthier and organic is to shop at local farmers’ market. Find one near you by searching the free online database maintained by the non-profit Local Harvest.

SUNNYVALE, Calif. - Water systems in California have the nation's ninth-worst record for violations of the Safe Drinking Water Act, according to a new report from the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC).

Researchers pored over Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) data from 2015 and found more than 1,900 violations in 832 different water systems that together serve 2.5 million people - in the Golden State alone.

Erik Olson, a report coauthor and director of the NRDC's Health Program, said many of the violations are for water conditions that can make people sick, and listed a few of the concerns: "These violations include failures to treat the water to get rid of pathogens; excessive levels of contaminants like arsenic or coliform bacteria; and failures to test the water to make sure that it is safe or to report results to ensure that it is safe," he said.

Olson warned that failures in reporting sometimes hide major health problems, as they did in Flint, Mich. The report found across the country, 77 million people get water from systems that have violations.

President Donald Trump's recent budget proposal calls for a 30-percent cut to the EPA, in the name of reducing burdensome regulations.

The NDRC report says the cuts would mean fewer staff to enforce the law, and a lot less money for grants to help smaller water systems afford needed improvements.

According to Jamie Consuegra, legislative director for NRDC's Climate Program, eight out of 10 violations already result in no penalty at all.

"Despite the need for better and more enforcement of state drinking-water laws, the Trump proposal would actually reduce EPA's enforcement by nearly a quarter," said Consuegra.

The report concludes the U.S. would need to invest about $380 billion to bring its aging water system infrastructure into compliance with safety standards.

You have a weapon and one last chance: partner, or die!

Step Three: Be “That Person” This is the hardest step. Dig deep. Become “that person” in your department who “knows this stuff.” Figure out where to use data for better decision-making and what tools to use to automate certain tasks, and become expert in them. Your current lack of knowledge is unimportant. You can learn, so learn!

Step Four: Propose a Test Project After you have figured out which vendors, partners, processes, tools, consultants, and colleagues need to be combined to accomplish your test project, build a short, uncomplicated presentation (if needed) to articulate what you will try to accomplish and what benchmarks you will use to measure success. You will be surprised at how quickly management says yes. If management does not say yes, you are working in a company that is not going to exist much longer, so look for a job where you get permission to use your new knowledge.

Step Five: Show Your Results

FOMO Is Driving Adoption Fear of missing out (FOMO) is motivating tech-savvy CEOs to get super serious about data and deploy machine learning systems across their enterprises as quickly as possible. No CEO wants to learn that their goods or services are losing market share because competitive offerings (built by both human and robot workers) are much cheaper. Every CEO we work with is trying to automate everything they can. Soon, machine learning systems will become “table stakes” for every company – department by department, system by system, function by function. You might not recognize it’s happening until you’re laid off.

Man/Machine Partnerships Industrial-scale automation is coming, but it’s not here yet. In the interim, some work will be fully automated and some will still require human expertise, due to

limits of evolving technology, or because of cost/benefit, or simply because humans still need to be involved. No matter how this unfolds, you must personally harness the power of machine learning, robots, automation, AI, cognitive computing, data science tools, etc., by partnering with them.

To survive and prosper as robots take over the business world, you will need to become the best man/machine partner of your peers. Here’s how to start.

Build another presentation that describes the problem you identified and solved with data science, data scientific research, machine learning, and the automation or the automated systems you built, conscripted, used, partnered with,

purchased, etc. Make it super easy to understand and obvious.

Step Six: Revel in Your Success and Repeat With your initial success will come a “hallway handle,” something that gets thrown around by two coworkers passing in the hall, like, “Hey, what are you working on?” “Joe’s data project.” Embrace it, own it, love it. It’s your pathway to gainful employment for the next decade and beyond.

This Will Work One of the biggest problems facing whitecollar workers today is a misunderstanding of man/machine partnerships. There is very little chance that robots (as we are defining them here) will take every whitecollar job in the next few years. They don’t have to. They only have to take yours.

The way to prosper in an ever-moreautomated world is to create your competitive advantage by becoming the best possible man/machine partner. If you let the machines do what they do best, combine that with what you do best, and, most importantly, demonstrate the value of you and your machine skills to management, you will not only survive the attack of the machines, you will be stronger for it.

Step One: Invent the Future Consider your job. Think about all the ways it may be done in the future. Anything is possible. Imagine AI is smarter than you are. Imagine robots can do anything.

Imagine you are tasked with automating your job, every keystroke, every phone call, every in-person meeting – everything.

Write down which areas will most likely be automated first. It may only be small parts of the process. List everything you do and all your responsibilities, and write down how they will be done when machines rule the world.

Step Two: Start Reading Read everything you can about data, data science, machine learning, AI, and automation. Everything you need to know is available online. Find every company that is working on automating cognitive tasks associated with your business. Look for partners, vendors, consultants, wellread bloggers – anyone who can help you understand what you need to do. Immerse yourself in the subject. It is your new fulltime job.
