AllMexicans have known since childhood that Cinco de Mayo is one of the great heroic feats of the Mexican people, a symbolic date that commemorates the historic victory of General Ignacio Zaragoza and his patriotic armies against the invading French army in the central state of Puebla in 1862.

But over the last 158 years, the celebration of La Batalla de Puebla has become not only a deeply binational celebration between Mexico and the United States, but essentially a celebration of Latinity, a recognition of the common roots that connect us in the innards and unique contributions of Hispanic

men and women to the culture, economy and diversity of the United States.

Just as Presidents Benito Juárez and Abraham Lincoln faced existential challenges for the integrity and future of their nations at that time, our people and humanity are now dealing with a major challenge with the Covid-19 pandemic, which once again exposes the best of us: our infinite will to fight against adversity, in any of its forms.

Here we have recognized the great anonymous heroes of this new battle, whom we find and honor wherever we turn: in hospitals, ambulances, farm fields, supermarkets. All those who risk their own lives 24 hours a day to save those of others.

But this Cinco de Mayo it is more significant than ever to focus our gaze on a group of unique Hispanic men and women who are in the front row of the battlefield and who, despite living in the most total uncertainty about their lives and their future, show a spirit, dedication and dedication which deserve to be recognized and protected.

Of course I am referring to our “dreamers”, the DACA beneficiaries and our TPS beneficiaries. A total of 202,500 “dreamers” and 131,300 “Tepesianos” belong to the army of essential workers who risk themselves daily against a common enemy.

Of that total, around 29,000 Dreamers and 11,000 Tepesianos work specifically in the health sector, as doctors, nurses, emergency workers, but thousands more are working tirelessly from their own trenches as teachers or vital services workers.

As dreamer Karen Reyes explains, a dedicated school teacher and daughter of an undocumented mother who has also been affected at work by the pandemic, “This is not only my story, it is the story of my mother and people like her.”

What better celebration of Cinco de Mayo and Mother's Day than to provide all exceptional patriots with DACA and TPS who work in essential activities with the security and certainty they deserve, extending their stay and work permits. Or better yet, approving the bill in the Senate that opens the door to a permanent solution. They have been and continue to rise to the occasion, now it is up to political leaders to do the same.

STEVE GARVEY CALLS

PRO-PALESTINIAN STUDENT PROTESTERS ‘TERRORISTS’

The Republican contender for U.S. Senate criticizes USC student encampments as acts of terrorism. Nearly 100 demonstrators were arrested on trespassing charges.

SteveGarvey, one of the final two candidates for California’s U.S. Senate seat, called pro-Palestinian protesters who build encampments on college campuses “terrorists,” as tension over the Gaza war intensifies.

Garvey, a Republican, made the statements last week in Los Angeles about the University of Southern California — a day after police arrested almost 100 anti-war protesters on campus on trespassing charges during a largely peaceful demonstration Wednesday.

The event was part of the latest nationwide wave of student-led protests at public and private colleges and universities as the humanitarian crisis worsens in Gaza during the Israeli offensive in response to the Oct. 7 Hamas attack that killed 1,200 people in Israel. For months, demonstrators have been calling for a permanent ceasefire in the war that has now killed more than 33,000 Palestinians in Gaza.

Some students are pressuring their university leaders to divest from Israel and defense contractors that sell weapons to Israel. The demonstrations sparked clashes between police officers and protesters and led to arrests of activists across campuses, with some Columbia University students filing a federal civil rights complaint against law enforcement.

At the University of Southern California, tension has been brewing for more than a week after administrators canceled the commencement speech by valedictorian Asna Tabassum, after a pro-Israel group deemed her social media post of a pro-Palestinian link antisemitic, which she disputed. On Thursday April 25, USC canceled its main-stage commencement entirely.

On Wednesday, students built tents where the commencement was supposed to take place, with some holding up “Free Palestine” signs, the Los Angeles Times reported. The university’s Hillel Foundation, a Jewish organization, condemned some of the chants as antisemitic, while the Council on American-Islamic Relations in Los Angeles, a Muslim advocacy group, criticized the university for a “violent crackdown” and “use of excessive forces” against free speech.

On Thursday, Garvey waded into the debate. Making a rare public appearance after the March 5 primary, he claimed that the protesters supported terrorists, calling the USC protest “terrorism disguised as free speech” without pointing to any specific language used by demonstrators.

The First Amendment protects speeches even if they sound extremely “menacing” or “threatening,” according to Michelle Deutchman, executive director of the National Center for Free Speech and Civic Engagement at the University of California.

“These organizations aren’t by kids in dormitories who are making a statement that they probably don’t really understand what it’s about. This is organized support of terrorism,” Garvey claimed. “I believe demonstrations that allow people to build encampments that obstruct the pathway to classes, and the opportunity to learn, is terrorism.”

Garvey’s campaign did not immediately respond to an inquiry for evidence supporting claims of protesters’ ties to terrorism, which

STEVE GARVEY LLAMA ‘TERRORISTAS’ A LOS MANIFESTANTES ESTUDIANTILES PRO PALESTINOS

the Federal Bureau of Investigation defines as involving unlawful use of violence to “intimidate or coerce” the government or civilians to advance a political or social agenda.

Garvey said he would support charging protesters with terrorism if the Los Angeles District Attorney’s office decided to do so. When asked if the office plans to bring those charges, spokesperson Venusse Dunn said: “When law enforcement presents a case to our office, we apply the law to the facts of each case and determine what charges, if any, are appropriate.”

Garvey also called on the federal government to withhold funding from universities and strip faculty members of tenure if they support the protesters.

The former L.A. Dodgers star has said he supports Israel’s right to defend itself in the war until Hamas is destroyed.

Rep. Adam Schiff, the Democrat from Burbank who advanced from the March primary with Garvey, has also supported Israel in the war. Schiff was reluctant to call for a ceasefire for months, but supported President Joe Biden’s call last month for a ceasefire tied to a larger deal. Schiff also voted alongside most Democrats to send $26 billion in aid to Israel last week.

Schiff’s campaign did not respond to an inquiry for comment on Garvey’s comments. But it did this evening send a statement about the campus protests.

“Jewish students need to both be safe and feel safe on their college campuses — but that will never be the case as long as universities allow hateful, antisemitic rhetoric, or even violence, to be tolerated,” Schiff said in the statement. “The participation of faculty or administrative personnel in antisemitic demonstrations is even more malignant…. I stand firm in condemning antisemitism in all its forms and affirm the need to ensure the safety and inclusion of all students on campus.”

Gov. Gavin Newsom, asked about the USC arrests at a press conference on April 25, said his office is “very mindful of what’s going on at the campuses and want to maintain people’s rights to protest — at the same time do so peacefully, without any hate.”

AT MY HIGH SCHOOL THE LIBRARY IS FOR EVERYTHING BUT BOOKS

School libraries are a vanishing breed as more and more young people ditch books for their digital devices.

Jeannine Chiang Ethnic Media Services

Takea peek into the library at Burlingame High School, located on the northern edge of Silicon Valley, and you’ll find students doing schoolwork on their computers, talking with friends, playing chess, or checking in with their college and career advisors.

No one is reading a book.

According to school records, around 50 books were checked out by students in the fall semester. In response, the administration has decided to take a different approach to the building, rebranding it as a student union, a communal space for students to interact and complete schoolwork.

As part of this transition, the school moved the College and Career Center into the library last year. This year, the school is removing books that have not been checked out for over a decade.

While school officials say the change is meant to cater to current student needs and interests, it also feels like a capitulation to the fact that students of my generation simply don’t read as much anymore, or at least they’re not reading books.

A recent survey found that nearly 50% of American adults read zero books in 2023. Another survey by Gallup in 2022 found a similar decline in reading among young adults though not as severe as older age groups.

“I don’t really read any books outside of what’s assigned in my English class,” says student Dora Yang, adding, “I feel like many high schoolers don’t have that extra free time to read for enjoyment.”

And Yang isn’t alone. Burlingame High School Librarian Rebecca Velasco says she’s only seen “about ten students” check a book out since January 2024.

“The numbers are pretty low. We have gone through our books and gotten rid of the books that kids just weren’t checking out or are severely outdated. could probably count on both hands the kids that came to check out books just for reading on their own time,” Velasco said. All of this is happening as, across the country, states are fighting over what books students should or shouldn’t read. According to PEN America, 1,477 individual books were banned, affecting 874 unique titles, in the 2022-2023 school year. Bans were most prevalent in Texas, Florida, Missouri, Utah, and South Carolina.

And yet, I’m not sure anyone would even notice if a book were banned at my school. Most students seem to spend their time surfing social media instead of diving into a novel. Revamping the library, basically stripping it of its books, would simply reinforce this trend.

“I think with Google being so prominent now, kids don’t come into the library to do research anymore because your research is essentially at your fingertips,” Velasco explained. But, she continued, “I still think it is crucial and super important to get kids in here, even if it’s just checking out novels and books on their own. The benefit of a physical book is huge, and we need to keep that going.”

Velasco is part of a shrinking number of trained school librarians nationally and in California where, according to the data, there is only one trained teacher librarian for every 9,667 students, well below the recommended ratio of 1 per 785 students.

And, according to the California Department of Education’s own findings, schools with a robust library program tend to outperform schools without such resources. Beyond providing access to books, libraries are places where students can learn to find information from a variety of sources, they can learn to evaluate the credibility of those sources, and they can hone their critical thinking skills as they grapple with conflicting ideas and information.

All of these are crucial skills for young people as society becomes more inundated by a flood of digital media, much of it unreliable and shaped by algorithms designed to deliver content catered to an individual’s personal interests. The ability to discover something new and unexpected that often comes through books is quickly vanishing.

For me personally, books have been more than just sources of information; they have been companions, mentors, and windows into worlds beyond my own. There’s something inherently intimate and immersive about holding a physical book, turning its pages, and allowing yourself to be transported into its narrative world. It’s an experience that digital content, no matter how convenient, simply cannot replicate.

An alternative to library conversions or closures can be seen at nearby Palo Alto High School, where officials have created more avenues that promote the use of library re-

sources, including its books. These include tutoring programs or programs to promote reading. Adding resources like student ambassadors and opportunities for librarians to teach students about research methods and credible sources allows students to learn important real-world skills while also helping them reconnect with books.

Introducing a wider variety of literary options – rather than imposing bans and limiting student choice – and expanding the number of languages available might also help draw students back into the library and rekindle their love of reading.

Doing away with our library will rob students here of all the potential for positive change and growth that even just one book contains. Let’s at least try to give them that opportunity before we throw in the towel. Let’s not give up on reading yet.

Jeannine Chiang Ethnic Media Services

HOW YOU CAN TAKE BETTER CONTROL OF YOUR ASTHMA

BPT

Didyou know 1 in 13 people in the U.S. live with asthma? If you or a family member have asthma, you already know how it affects your daily life. You may have coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath. There may be times when your symptoms suddenly get worse, causing an asthma attack.

Asthma is a chronic lung condition that can keep you from doing the things you love. It may even be life-threatening. But in most cases, asthma can be controlled.

What is asthma control?

If your asthma is under control, that means you have minimal asthma symptoms, with no limits to your daily activity. You should be able to do anything that someone without asthma can do, like sleeping through the night, going hiking or playing soccer. Good asthma control requires treatment of your symptoms so you can live a normal, active life.

Your asthma specialist (a doctor who may be an allergist or pulmonologist) can help you create an Asthma Action Plan. This plan will offer guidance on how to watch for symptoms and when to use asthma medication.

Steps to help control your asthma

Take your asthma medications as prescribed.

* Use a quick-relief inhaler to treat sudden symptoms and open the airways.

* Use a daily controller medication to prevent inflammation.

Avoid triggers that cause symptoms.

* Stay indoors when pollen counts are high or air quality is poor.

* Clean up mold in your house.

* Avoid being around cigarettes.

* Use dust mite-proof mattress covers and pillow cases.

* Keep furry pets out of your bedroom.

Get regular check-ups with your doctor.

* This can mean seeing a specialist, like an allergist or pulmonologist.

When to talk with your asthma specialist

When you have frequent asthma symptoms, or you're using your quick-relief inhaler or oral corticosteroids too often, your asthma is not under good control. You can use the "Rules of Two" to help you know when your asthma is not under control.

Signs of uncontrolled asthma include:

* Experiencing asthma symptoms 2 days per week

* Waking at night due to asthma 2 (or more) times per month

* Refilling your quick-relief inhaler prescription or taking oral corticosteroids 2 or more times per year

* Measure changes in your peak flow with asthma symptoms more than 2 times 10 (20%)

If you answered "yes" to any of the Rules of Two, or if you've been to the emergency room or hospitalized due to asthma, it's important to see your doctor.

Challenges of eosinophilic asthma

Some types of asthma are very hard to control. Eosinophilic asthma with Type 2 inflammation is a severe form of asthma. It may require special medications called biologics, and you may need to see an asthma specialist.

Learn more about these medications at BiologicMeds.org.

Take an active role

To better control your asthma, you can take a more active role in your own treatment. For example, when your doctor prescribes medication, ask how it works and how to use it. Don't be afraid to ask questions. Don't stop or cut back on medications just because you're feeling better for now, or if you're worried about side effects.

It can also be useful to have someone in your corner, to give you advice and guidance. Oneon-one asthma coaching can help you learn effective ways to manage your condition. It can also help you easily track your symptoms and progress.

No tema hacer preguntas.

ONE YEAR AFTER MEDI-CAL RENEWALS, HEALTH CARE EXPANDED FOR CALIFORNIANS

year ago, with the end of the federal COVID-19 emergency, California started redetermining eligibility for the one out of three of its residents on Medi-Cal, its version of Medicaid.

At a time when many states are using this process to drop Medicaid members from the rolls en masse — Texas, for instance, has removed over two million members since the pandemic-era protections were lifted, while Florida has removed nearly one million — California is on the front line of efforts not only to retain but expand health coverage.

At an Ethnic Media Services Briefing, a state Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) official, community health care enrollment workers and Medi-Cal enrollees shared how redetermination has impacted enrollment, efforts to keep eligible members enrolled and the importance of keeping Medi-Cal services.

An overview of the unwinding

The nationwide redetermination of Medicaid, known as “the great unwinding,” is “one of the biggest healthcare events after the Affordable Care Act,” said Yingjia Huang, DHCS Assistant Deputy Director of Health Care Benefits and Eligibility. “It ends next month, in May 2024. California was able to renew and is continuing to renew nearly 15 million Medi-Cal members — and we’ve learned quite a bit.”

In November 2023, with 1 million Californians up for renewal that month, the state had a 21 percent disenrollment rate, whether due to ineligibility or errors with returning paperwork.

In December, however, DHCS automated much of the online enrollment process, “reducing that 21 percent disenrollment to about 9 percent,” said Huang. “Our January and February data shows that it continues to decrease, and those who are disenrolled for procedural reasons have 90 days to re-enroll with no gap in coverage.”

“One of the major obstacles was filling out that hefty redetermination packet. Many of our members came onto the program during the pandemic, and never did redetermination before, as the annual process was paused,” she explained. “Alongside automating the process to help members, we’ve created how-to videos and outreach to enroll over the phone or online, translated into 19 languages.”

In January 2024, DHCS also expanded Medi-Cal to eligible undocumented individuals of all ages adding about 700,000 people to full-scope benefits, she continued. “We did all that as we were going through the unwinding, and we’re very proud of where we are.”

“Now that Medi-Cal has expanded/ to everyone regardless of citizenship and immigration status, it’s ever-more vital for the health of the communities we serve and gets us closer to health care for all,” said Vilma Champion, Director of Managed Care and Enrollment at Northeast Valley Health Corporation (NEVHC) in the San Fernando and Santa Clarita Valleys.

With the expansion, NEVHC expects to provide primary and preventive services to over 6,000 newly eligible patients. With the unwinding, its clinics have helped over 5,000 patients re-enroll, the bulk of whom were monolingual Spanish speakers from immigrant backgrounds.

Champion suggested that, “to meet our patients where they are with access to care before they need it when they’re sick,” DHCS have culturally-tailored outreach for those with public charge or immigration status concerns, and reintroduce Saturday hours to increase accessibility and reduce wait times for those with conflicting work schedules.

Firsthand stories

“As the mother of three children, I’m very thankful that the workers at my clinic in Sun Valley made re-enrollment so smooth,” said Griselda, a Spanish-speaking NEVHC patient, through a translator. “Good health ensures the future for our children. I hope Medi-Cal is always there for them.”

She said she was especially grateful to be able to take her children to yearly physicals, and have them access normally expensive dental care: “My 15 year

old daughter had a problem where she couldn’t close her teeth, and she was aware that kids who have this get bullied in school. She was very happy to get braces and prevent that from happening.”

“Last August, near San Diego, my mother, from Yucatan, had her first seizure,” said Dara Montejo, daughter of a new enrollee. “She was undocumented and I didn’t know much about Medi-Cal at the time; I thought she was dying. Even when I was calling the ambulance, in the back of my mind, I thought, ‘How much will the bill be?’ and when the EMTs came, we decided to take her in my dad’s car. I wasn’t feeling safe, but it felt like the only option.”

“That was last August,” she continued. “As of January, Medi-Cal has now opened its arms to her and I’m not scared of telling her to go to the emergency room whenever she feels bad, because I know we won’t get a bill of thousands of dollars, or over $100 for each bottle of her monthly prescriptions. It’s really nice not having to worry about that anymore.”

Although Medi-Cal is expanding and improving, some still fear accessibility gaps and stigma.

“When my daughter got pregnant, she didn’t know how to navigate Medi-Cal. I helped get her enrolled, but we kept having to go to different clinics and doctors,” said Fitzgerald Graves, an enrollee with the African American Network of Kern County. “There was no rapport or consistent diagnosis … it turned out the baby had encephalitis, but the doctor told us the heartbeat was fine, and actually cursed us.”

“At a second hospital, they told us there was no heartbeat. The baby had passed in the womb,” he continued.

“I’m happy to say that all of our family is now on Medi-Cal,” Graves said. “My daughter and her fiancee are now expecting a little girl and I’ve tried to get her to use this new enrollment as a tool to get therapy and advocate for herself in finding physicians … I’m now scheduled for knee surgery due to a car accident. I’m confident in my surgeon and relieved to have the coverage.”

“What the state’s doing to keep people on Medi-Cal is the right way to go, and it’s only getting better,” he added. “My hope for the future of health care in California is that people have support in navigating the benefits they now have access to.”

CAR TRACKING CAN ENABLE

DOMESTIC

ABUSE.

WHY TURNING IT OFF IS EASIER SAID THAN DONE

Internet-connected cars allow abusers to track domestic violence survivors after they leave. A trio of California bills seek to compel automakers to act.

a restraining order against your former partner and a judge granting you possession of a family car should be enough to get a car manufacturer to turn off location tracking, right?

Wrong.

That scenario has happened to domestic abuse survivors CalMatters spoke to and the law as written hasn’t been enough to help.

Abusive partners increasingly use technology to exercise control, monitor, and continue to abuse their victims. A person with remote access to a vehicle via smartphone app can turn a car on or off, record video, lock or unlock the doors, and track a car in real time or see where the car has been in the past.

Apple AirTags are notoriously used by stalkers and abusers for tracking, but internetconnected cars can do the same without a driver’s knowledge, and summarily do a poor job of protecting people’s privacy. Last fall, the Mozilla Foundation found that cars had the worst privacy and security grades of any product ever reviewed by the San Franciscobased nonprofit.

Yenni Rivera works with domestic violence survivors in Los Angeles, work she started doing, she said, after being assaulted twice by people she knew, both times with the other person taking away her car. A car is a lifeline for survivors, and taking it away is a means of control. Abusers have tracked survivors for decades, stalking them at the places they go most often, but Rivera said modern tech makes it possible to harass without leaving home.

“I hear the story over and over from survivors about being located by their vehicle and having it taken,” she said. “It just puts you in a worst case situation because it really triggers you thinking, ‘Should I go back and give in?’ and

many do. And that’s why many end up being murdered in their own home. The law should make it easier to leave safely and protected.”

To protect domestic violence survivors from tech-enabled violence, California lawmakers are considering a trio of bills this month:

• Senate Bill 1394 by Sen. Dave Min, an Irvine Democrat, would end tracking of vehicles owned by domestic violence survivors who give proof of possession or exclusive use, including as ordered in a restraining order, dissolution decree, temporary court order, title, or other proof.

• SB 1000 by Democratic Sens. Angelique Ashby of Sacramento and Susan Rubio of West Covina would deny abusers, following a request by a survivor, access to devices that can connect to the internet.

Assembly Bill 3139 by Assembly-

calendar year.

Automakers do not oppose legislation that requires them to turn off location tracking for abusers, said Alliance for Automotive Innovation lobbyist John Moffatt at a committee hearing earlier this month, but lawmakers need to combine proposed laws.

“We cannot comply with all three bills,” Moffatt said.

Unlike SB 1394, the Assembly bill would allow people who don’t own the car to end remote access and require severance of location tracking immediately inside the car or within one day when that’s considered technically infeasible. The initial version of the bill required automakers to cut the connection within two days, but privacy committee staff urged amendments to strengthen the bill with an option to immediately sever remote access inside the car and give survivors seven days to provide an affidavit.

Akilah Weber, a La Mesa Democrat, would allow a survivors of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, stalking, and sex trafficking to immediately end tracking or remote control of a vehicle even if the vehicle isn’t registered in their name.

All three bills passed judiciary committees last week. A letter by cosponsors of SB 1394 sent to the Senate Judiciary committee earlier this month said “a legislative response is needed because survivors’ requests to sever their abusers’ remote vehicle access are routinely being denied by car manufacturers.”

California appears to be the only state currently considering legislation to protect domestic violence survivors from connected vehicle control and tracking, according to National Network to End Domestic Violence.

Two similar bills considered in the Wisconsin state legislature — SB 1033 and AB 1035 — failed to pass before the end of the legislative

“The inability of consumers to control the access and use of their own personal data poses a threat to safety, and in the case of survivors, it can mean life or death,” Assembly privacy and consumer protection committee staff said in an analysis of the bill ahead of the meeting.

Survivors who seek protection under AB 3139 would have to make sworn statements and get an affidavit from a licensed medical provider, social worker, or victim services provider; or a copy of a police report or restraining order within seven days. Otherwise, the remote access and location tracking services will be restored. Auto manufacturers who fail to comply may face penalties between $50,000 to $100,000 for each violation.

Both bills to disable vehicle tracking build on a 2022 federal law that allows severance of a phone number from a family cell plan.

any product ever reviewed by the San Francisco-based nonprofit.

Awareness about the risks to survivors posed by connected cars is growing following a series of high profile cases. A New York Times story published in December 2023 detailed the account of a woman whose Mercedes Benz was tracked by an abusive partner despite a restraining order, requests by police, and documentation that the car was exclusively granted to her in divorce proceedings. In the same month Reuters told the story of a San Francisco woman denied an end to location tracking of her Tesla despite a restraining order.

The need for a legislative solution to this problem became clear last summer, said Adam Dodge, CEO of the nonprofit Ending TechEnabled Abuse, after survivors and shelter leaders expressed concern that internetconnected cars can lead abusers to shelters at confidential locations, compromising the safety of staff and survivors. Numerous advocates and survivors who spoke to CalMatters agreed.

Stephanie Davidson, managing attorney at the Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles, said she’s encountered multiple shelters with a policy that survivors can no longer park their vehicle there and said connected cars can complicate admission.

One woman CalMatters spoke with, who now works with domestic survivors in Texas but used to live in Los Angeles, recalled several instances in which an ex-partner was able to track her down that she cannot explain. On one occasion, she parked her Lexus at a confidential survivor shelter in a garage behind a gate not visible from the street — yet she said her court advocate spotted him nearby.

Dodge also said he repeatedly heard stories of domestic violence victims granted permis sion to use a vehicle in a restraining order but still tracked by their abuser.

“It puts them in a disempowered position of having to choose between transportation and safety — and most of the time they choose transportation because it’s really hard to forgo your vehicle when you’re trying to rebuild your life after experiencing abuse,” he said.

A vehicle can be essential for a domestic vio lence survivor when leaving, the most danger ous time for people in an abusive relationship. Multiple survivors told CalMatters that vehicle access is also essential to finding a job and gaining long-term financial independence af ter they leave.

Dodge said he’s in talks with a member of Congress about proposing federal legislation that requires automakers to sever location tracking for survivors, but he believes passing a law in California seems more realistic.

In addition to legislative proposals, the en forcement division of the California Privacy Protection Agency launched an investigation in auto manufacturers last summer, and Fed eral Communications Commission Chairper son Jessica Rosenworcel introduced rules for car manufacturers last month aimed at pre vention of domestic abuse.

The list of AB 3139 supporters includes the Consumer Federation of California and Oak land Privacy. Hayley Tsukayama, an associate director with the Electronic Frontier Founda tion, called the bill well-intentioned but ex pressed concerns about implementation.

the nonprofit Ending Tech-Enabled Abuse. The bill was crafted with input from dozens of survivors who experienced abuse due to remote access or location tracking, said professor Jane Stoever, director of the University of California, Irvine Law School Domestic Violence Clinic, an organization that has cosponsored roughly a dozen California bills.

Stoever has taught domestic violence clinics for two decades and said SB 1349 intends to create a straightforward process for survivors because there is no imperative for car manufacturers to act.

She said the clause in SB 1349 that calls for action within two business days comes from the standard under federal law. She said two days is an expedited timeline and less likely to result in car manufacturers requesting an extension. She wouldn’t oppose an approach that allows severing access quicker than in two days as privacy committee staff recommend, but fears misuse of a law that lacks a burden of proof.

If a survivor suspects or finds out the car they’re in is being followed, she said there are a few pathways to safety: You can go to police, and state-funded domestic violence agencies have public locations, but advised against going to a confidential shelter location because that could put others in danger.

“I always consider how any proposed law could be used against my clients,” Stoever said. “We want to help survivors to safety but recognize property interests and drafted SB 1394 having in mind the due process a temporary or permanent court order provides.”

Pues no, estás equivocado.

The Senate bill that would end vehicle tracking under a restraining order is supported by the Electronic Frontier Foundation, the UC Irvine School of Law Domestic Violence Clinic, and

ADVOCATES CHEER FEDS’ PROPOSAL TO RECLASSIFY MARIJUANA AS LOWER RISK

Marijuanalegalization groups are celebrating after the Drug Enforcement Agency proposed on Tuesday April 30 to reclassify cannabis as less dangerous or addictive than Schedule One drugs such as heroin or LSD.

Marijuana would be downgraded to the same category as ketamine or some anabolic steroids.

Dale Gieringer, director of the nonprofit California NORML, the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, said his organization first sued the DEA more than fifty years ago to get cannabis reclassified to Schedule Three.

"This is a long-overdue step forward for the federal government," Gieringer asserted. "But it does not actually change the legality of marijuana that people get in legal dispensaries in California or elsewhere."

Opponents cited concerns about the safety of long-term marijuana use. State laws legalizing recreational and medicinal marijuana are not affected. However, the new classification would clear the way for more federally funded research on marijuana and would benefit dispensaries by making them eligible for certain tax deductions.

Gieringer emphasized he would like Congress to legalize recreational marijuana nationwide.

"What needs to happen is marijuana has to be formally descheduled taken out of the Controlled Substances Act and treated like alcohol or tobacco actually, by its own separate laws," Gieringer contended. "Not subject to other ridiculous restrictions that apply under the Controlled Substances Act."

The White House Office of Management and Budget is expected to review the proposed rule, which would then be released for public comment.

EARTHTALK Q&A: SAND BATTERIES

Dear EarthTalk: Could plain-ol’ beach sand be the next frontier in renewable energy?- Paul C., Baltimore, MD

In our ongoing quest for sustainable energy solutions, innovative technologies are necessary to complement renewable sources like solar and wind power. One such potential breakthrough revolves around an unexpected but abundant resource: beach sand.

Sand batteries represent an emerging approach to energy storage, particularly effective in harnessing and retaining energy from intermittent sources like solar and wind. The physical properties of sand, such as its ability to store heat at high temperatures, make it an excellent medium for energy retention. This capacity is being leveraged by innovative technologies to create a more stable and reliable energy supply, as sand can efficiently accumulate and release heat as required.

The science behind sand batteries involves heating sand to high temperatures using surplus energy generated from renewable sources. This stored heat can then be converted back into energy when needed. This system capitalizes on the thermal properties of sand to create a natural battery that can offer both heating solutions and electricity generation.

As National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s (NREL) Patrick Davenport notes, “Sand and concrete silos with refractory insulation are very inexpensive materials that can lead to low-cost energy storage.”

A few key players currently pioneering this technology include Polar Night Energy in Finland, which has implemented a sand battery for residential and commercial heating, and EnergyNest in Norway, which specializes in thermal energy storage using similar principles.

Using sand for energy storage offers multiple benefits: it is abundant, low-cost, eco-friendly, and can store heat for long

periods. This makes sand an attractive option for enhancing the stability of renewable energy systems, and providing a reliable energy supply even during times of low sunlight or wind.

Sand battery technology is currently being tested and used in various projects worldwide, not only demonstrating the viability of sand as an energy storage solution but highlighting its potential scalability and integration into existing energy infrastructures.

Despite the potential, challenges that include technical, economic and logistical hurdles that be addressed. Developing and deploying sand battery technology on a large scale requires significant research and development efforts. Additionally, the role of government and private investment is crucial in overcoming barriers and driving forward the innovation needed for widespread adoption.

Sand batteries are a promising solution for renewable energy storage, potentially revolutionizing how we store and utilize energy from renewable sources. Their ability to provide a stable, reliable energy supply could be a game-changer for the renewable sector.

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS

If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on a property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office where the property is located or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property.

NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER

The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be

postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether No. 116745763-X59 APN No. 254-47-032

your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 1-626-2650383. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale.

PLEASE TAKE NOTICE THAT if the Trustee is unable to convey title for any reason, the successful bidder’s sole and exclusive remedy shall be return of monies paid to the Trustee, and the successful bidder shall have no further recourse. Further, if the foreclosure sale is set aside for any reason, the Purchaser at the sale shall be entitled only to a return of the deposit paid and shall have no further recourse or remedy against the Mortgagor, Mortgagee, or Trustee herein.

If you have previously been discharged in bankruptcy, you may have been released of personal liability for this loan in which case this notice is intended to exercise the note holder rights against the real property only. As required by law, you are notified that a negative credit reporting may be submitted to a credit report agency if you fail to fulfill the terms of your credit obligation.

If required by the provisions of Section 2923.5 of the California Civil Code, the declaration from the mortgagee, beneficiary or authorized agent is attached to the Notice of trustee’s sale duly recorded with the appropriate County Recorder’s office.

PIXAR FEST 2024 CELEBRATES FRIENDSHIP AND BEYOND

Themed Food, merchandise, and a new parade and nighttime show welcome guests to experience the Animation Studios’ Legacy

Whenwalking into the magical locale of Disneyland and Disney California Adventure during this year’s summer months you might notice an uptick in Pixar decorations using the lively hues of red, yellow and blue, much like their beloved bouncing ball that is seen on their logo before every one of the studios’ films.

That’s because Pixar Fest 2024 has arrived, and from now through August 4, 2024, Pixar takes over the Disneyland Resort, bringing with it the delightful characters, themed food, merchandise and exciting activities throughout both of the parks in Anaheim.

Friendship is the main theme of the celebration, with an emphasis on the comraderies and connections between the many characters of the Pixar universe – from the originators in Pixar friendship, Woody and Buzz of the Toy Story franchise, to newer friendships like Miguel and his trusting street dog Dante from 2017’s Coco or Meilin and her crew of girls in Turning Red

Originating in 2018, Pixar Fest was launched the same year as the Pixar Pier land opened at Disney California Adventure, giving Pixar fans a whole lot to enjoy then.

For the 2024 iteration, there are new foods, new adventures and plenty of new characters since Pixar has released seven films since then, with an eight, Inside Out 2, making it into the festival despite its release still being a few weeks away.

Recently we had an opportunity to hear from the Disney and Pixar creatives whose job was to transform the park, create custom Pixar animations for the nighttime projections, pick the food and translate the animation studios films from screen to parks.

You can see for yourself how the parks are transformed into a Pixar world from now until August 4, 2024.

Food

A whole new Pixar-inspired menu was created for the event, with plenty of diverse food options for any palette and any age.

Among the new foods are favorites from Pixar Fest 2018 like the Fried Bologna Sandwich from UP. New options include a Marigold Bridge Cupcake inspired from Coco, as well as a slightly spicy and flavorful plantbased Huarache made of soy chorizo beans and seasoned steak tips topped with lettuce, cheese, avocado crema, and tomatillo salsa and served with Spanish rice and refried beans topped with nopales pico de gallo

The Red Panda Bao features jumbo pork and vegetable stuffed bao with chile-garlic sauce with a vivid red coloring.

For those 21 and up, two new cocktails inspired from Elemental look and sound refreshing. They are the H2O-rita which features Tequila, blue curaçao syrup, lychee nectar, yuja purée, and lime juice as well as the Exothermic Margarita, which also features Tequila, ancho chile liqueur, passion fruit nectar, lime & grapefruit juices, and agave nectar. Both are garnished with a rock candy stick.

On May 10, 2024 six Pixar marketplaces will pop up at Disney California Adventure, bringing the total locations to get these limited time offerings to 29.

Entertainment

The main draws at any Disney park revolve around the rides, spectacles and food. For the entertainment portion of the celebration, Pixar and Disney worked side by side to bring their “Better Together: A Pixar Pals Celebration!” parade, “Together Forever – A Pixar Nighttime Spectacular,” Club Pixar, Pixar Pals Playtime Party, and Character encounters to life.

Tasha Sounart is the Theme Park Creative Director, Pixar Animation Studios and helped

bridge the creative collaborations from the animation studio in Emeryville to the parks in Anaheim.

“What we do is we collaborate with our awesome team members here and we try to make sure to keep our characters cute and funny and all the stories you know accurate to what you would see in the films and it's really interesting job because we're always working in different media and different art styles, but we want the feelings and the emotions that you've that you've connected with these char-

acters from the films to be carried forward in a park in many different ways.”

KC Wilkerson, Principal Media Designer for Disney Live Entertainment, helped with bringing “Together Forever – A Pixar Nighttime Spectacular” to life, taking the original Pixar Fest 2018 show and enhancing it by adding even more great elements and stories from the newer studio releases.

“Together Forever is a story and it's about needing new friends. It's about taking those friends and setting out on adventures and it's about overcoming adversity together. And that is what allows us to form everlasting bonds, so we wanted to choose moments from the newer films that really reflected the overall story that we were trying to tell.”

With new projector technology, the show is able to project onto surfaces with brighter colors and more dynamic visuals. From the storefronts on Main Street, to the Sleeping Beauty Castle, the visuals alongside the incredible fireworks show is bound to dazzle.

“[It] was a tremendous challenge but I think when you see pictures and video of the show and hope it in real life and then you can see that the show really delivers,” adds Wilkerson.

At the daytime Pixar Pals Playtime Party you can expect to find oversized photo locations, craft tables, interactive dancing and games as well as a chance to get up and close with several of the new Pixar characters at the park.

“That's a little tongue twister, but it just kind of speaks to the fun and excitement in this in this location. So this theater is in the park and this is a daytime fun zone. It really transformed that whole space to an immersive location, you get to join some of the characters for a dance party.”

Some of the new characters include Ember and Wade from Elemental and Luca and Alberto from Luca, as well as the Mr. and Mrs. Incredible in their newer super suits which appear in Incredibles 2

Down at Club Pixar, an evening and nighttime activation at the Hollywood Lot at Disney California Adventure, families can wind down and enjoy a “drive-in” Pixar shorts theaters, or engage in many activities centered around the Pixar films, including games, and the main stage which features music and interactive dance.

Tracy Halas, Creative Director, Disney Live Entertainment adds, “It's for everyone in all ages, but this is the hottest club in town. So once you enter you are immediately welcomed by these cool neon signs that can lead you into this this space.”

Featured at Club Pixar is a stage which hosts interactive dances as well as a DJ which welcomes guests to interact with interpretive dancers who take memorable Pixar film scenes and put their interpretive spin on them.

Pixar Fest runs now through August 4, 2024.
