But this great public health crisis of the new millennium also has the potential to become a watershed, a unique opportunity to rethink our individual and collective behaviors, the same as human beings, as communities, institutions, or countries.

The Earth Day that we celebrate this April 22 was an excellent opportunity to begin to rethink in an idealistic way a new global order, inspired by principles of collaboration and mutual assistance, in environmental progress as a tool for sustainability and equity after the collapse of oil prices, and in recognizing the role essential workers play in our countries.

While it is true that we have witnessed isolated examples of international cooperation to confront the pandemic, Earth week will largely pass as a missed opportunity. Worse still, what we see in the case of the United States is "more of the same," with President Donald Trump's announcement of an Executive Order to temporarily suspend migration to the United States.

The rhetorical display of migrants as scapegoats for America's problems is not new, and it is not surprising that they reemerge in the White House narrative as presidential popularity has suffered a serious setback: twothirds of Americans They believe Trump responded very slowly to the pandemic, according to a Pew Center poll.

ew topics are as divisive as genetic engineering. Plants and animals that have had their genomes artificially altered now dominate the world of agriculture. The vast majority of U.S.-grown corn and soybeans are genetically engineered.

In grocery stores, over 60 percent of processed foods contain at least some components derived from GMOs (genetically modified organisms). Given all this, it makes sense to ask whether or not these altered forms of life have deleterious effects on humans or the environment.

When it comes to human health, the evidence suggests GMOs are harmless. Exhaustive meta-analyses of scientific studies on GMOs have generally found no links between their consumption and negative health outcomes. However, there are some caveats. One is that the biotechnology companies responsible for the creation of GMOs have also been responsible for a large portion of the research on their health effects. Therefore, financial conflicts of interest may have tainted the research. Additionally, many scientists still feel that the jury isn’t out on the safety of GMOs. A 2015 scientific paper signed by 300 independent researchers from around the world states that the effects of GMOs on health remain “unclear.”

Another factor is that scientific studies on GMO-related health risks have generally been short term. We can’t extrapolate the effects of years of GMO consumption on human health by looking at the seemingly null results from a year-long study on rodents. It could still be that GMOs are causing health issues, but we’ve failed to establish a causal link because of how long these issues take to manifest. That said, it’s quite possible that most (if not all) GMOs on the market today are completely safe to eat.

Regardless, testing should continue, especially for new varieties of GMOs that aren’t

well studied.

Environmentally, GMOs are a mixed bag.

Most crops are genetically modified in an effort to fight pests. There are two ways to accomplish this goal. The first is to create plants that produce pest-killing toxins “endogenously”: When pests eat such plants, they die. These types of GMOs can actually be good for the environment in that they often don’t require as many pesticides as unmodified plants.

Unfortunately, an alternate pest fighting strategy that also uses genetic modification—engineering plants to be resistant to pesticides and herbicides—has the opposite effect, generally leading to an increase in agricultural waste. Also of concern is the genetic contamination of wild species due to cross breeding with GMOs. This is particularly a risk in the case of GMO farmed salmon. If these fish escape fish farming operations and contaminate wild stocks, the ecological consequences could be severe.

All in all, GMOs are still shrouded in uncertainty. They seem to have some benefits, and many scientists believe they can help address world hunger. However, there’s still a chance GMOs could cause health issues, and they have already caused some environmental issues. If you’re not convinced by the research to date, and prefer to avoid GMOs altogether, look for the non-GMO project label on the foods you buy.

ASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Muchas universidades han migrado a clases en línea para el resto del año escolar, pero para las personas que están en prisión el aprendizaje a distancia sigue siendo un reto. Más de 400 personas de las prisiones de Tennessee están obteniendo créditos universitarios. La Iniciativa de Educación Superior de Tennessee (Tennessee Higher Education Initiative) fomenta la mancuerna de instituciones acreditadas con estos estudiantes, y ayuda a pagar su colegiatura.

Su Directora Ejecutiva, Molly Lasagna, dice que su programa es distinguido como uno de los pocos con acceso de internet. ASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Many colleges have shifted to online classes for the remainder of the school year, but for people who are incarcerated, distance learning remains a challenge.

More than 400 people in Tennessee prisons are earning college credits. The Tennessee Higher Education Initiative pairs accredited institutions with these students and helps pay their tuition. Its executive director, Molly Lasagna, said her program is lucky as one of the few with internet access. It serves the Turney Center Industrial Complex in Hickman County and the Northwest Correctional Complex

in Lake County. However, she said, in prisons across the country, the pandemic is a likely setback for people working toward degrees.

"College partners are going online for the spring and summer, and the prison facilities don't have the ability to do that," she said, "and so those students are just going to get left behind, essentially."

Her organization now is offering emergency grants to help formerly incarcerated alumni and their families pay for child care, medical costs, rent or housing, utilities and other necessities during the pandemic.

Research from an advocacy group, The Prison Project, showed that access to higher education reduces the odds a person will end up back in prison after their release.

Norm, who prefers we not use his last name, lives in Rutherford County and obtained his associate's degree a few years ago while incarcerated. He said the program has huge implications for anyone returning to society, and added that he worries about those whose college tracks might be derailed.

"I'd say the biggest thing is it gives them hope for a future when they get out," he said. "You have so many obstacles ahead of you, just having a felony and coming out of prison."

According to the Sycamore Institute, a public policy research center, Tennessee's state prisons housed more than 30,000 people in 2018, about 95% of whom eventually will be released. That data is online at sycamoreinstitutetn.org.

As Californians shelter at home amid the COVID-19 outbreak, an estimated 1 million of them lack access to clean drinking water, one of the most fundamental resources for maintaining health and hygiene.

Lucy Hernandez knew something was wrong when she arrived at a Walmart store in Visalia, California, last month, shortly before Gov. Gavin Newsom issued a statewide stay-at-home order to slow the spread of the coronavirus.

On the normally well-stocked shelves, Hernandez couldn't find bottled water.

Alarmed, she jumped back in her car and headed to Costco. No water. She tried the 99 Cents Only store, the Dollar Tree and Target. No water. Desperate, Hernandez drove 20 miles to Hanford, but still couldn't find water for sale.

A grandmother of three, Hernandez lives with nine other family members in the tiny community of West Goshen, just east of Visalia. Residents in the predominantly low-income Latino community distrust the local tap water because it has a history of contamination. Some rely on groundwater from private wells that haven't been tested for safety. Like thousands of other residents across the Central Valley without access to safe water through their taps, many people in West Goshen rely on bottled water to drink.

"I was in shock," Hernandez says. "I said, 'How can this happen? How can we be without water bottles if we need the water?'

"A lot of our residents, they depend on this kind of water, and there was nothing, nothing."

As Californians across the state shelter at home amid the COVID-19 outbreak, an estimated 1 million of them lack access to clean drinking water, one of the most fundamental resources for maintaining health and hygiene. Many of these residents are concentrated in rural parts of the state, particularly in the San Joaquin Valley, where dozens of small public water systems fail to meet safety standards, data shows.

Nationwide, millions more are exposed to unsafe tap water each year, often from small community water systems that largely serve rural and low-income communities of color. Lead from aging pipes and other toxic chemicals have turned up in urban water supplies as well, most notoriously in Flint, Michigan, in 2014. And a recent report by the Environmental Working Group detected widespread contamination of U.S.

Bottled water is being distributed to needy families in areas where water supplies are compromised, mainly in the San Joaquin and eastern Coachella Valleys.

drinking water supplies with man-made "forever chemicals," including in cities such as Miami, Philadelphia, and New Orleans.

Contaminated water isn't the only issue. A third of Americans struggle to pay their water bills, a situation expected to worsen with the economic downturn. That's especially an issue in Detroit, one of the COVID-19 hot spots, where until recently thousands of residents were without running water.

However, some states, including Michigan and California, are now prohibiting water shut-offs during the pandemic.

Infrastructure woes Last year, California's governor signed into law Senate Bill 200, creating a $130 million a year Safe and Affordable Drinking Water Fund to support improvements to community water infrastructure. Implementation of that bill is underway, but it hasn't come in time to help the thousands of people who now find themselves without safe tap water amid the coronavirus pandemic, advocates say.

"The issue of lack of access to tap water

is huge in California," says Michael K. Claiborne, senior attorney with the Leadership Counsel for Justice and Accountability, a community organizing group based in the San Joaquin and Eastern Coachella Valleys.

"This new COVID-19 crisis has exacerbated and magnified these problems that communities in California already face."

Common pollutants found in noncompliant Central Valley water supplies include residual agricultural and industrial chemicals such as nitrates, arsenic, and a compound known as 1,2,3-TCP. These contaminants have been linked to serious health problems such as liver and kidney damage, respiratory ailments, blood pressure disorders, and cancer.

Susana De Anda, executive director of the Community Water Center, which works with communities in the San Joaquin Valley, says she's worried people with contaminated tap water could resort to cooking with it or-even worse-drinking it. Her organization is hearing from many people in the same situation as Hernandez, she says.

De Anda and Claiborne say the state should provide funding for emergency bottled water delivery to areas with shortages. Some communities with unsafe tap water already have bottled water distribution programs, Community Water Center Policy Director Jonathan Nelson explains. These programs need to be more widely publicized and applications streamlined so that people can get water supplies as soon as possible, he says.

The advocates applauded Newsom's recent moratorium on water shut-offs for unpaid water bills during the coronavirus crisis, as well as the restoration of water service to people who had their water turned off for lack of payment since March 4. Nevertheless, that doesn't resolve the problem for those who lack clean tap water, they say. It also doesn't address people living without water because of shut-offs that happened before the pandemic, they add.

'Water is something that everybody needs to live' Democratic House leaders have proposed including $25 billion in the next COVID-19 stimulus bill to fund clean water infrastructure projects and provide funding for American households struggling to pay their water and sewer bills.

Back in West Goshen, Hernandez is still struggling to find bottled water for her family and neighbors. She searches the stores regularly -- even though she fears going out could expose her to the virus -- and networks with residents and relatives in other towns through phone and social media to find people with bottled water that they're willing to share.

She says she wishes the county would have an emergency number people could call to get water, instead of her and her neighbors trying to solve the problem themselves.

"We're trying to help each other, but if we don't have the resources, then how can we help?" Hernandez says. "Water is something that everybody needs to live. We need to have water to drink, no matter what."

Taking advantage of the fact that this Monday is known as International Marijuana Day (April 20), the digital platform has released this six-episode program focused on the taste of cannabis and its culinary possibilities.

But the skills of the chefs, all with many years of experience, are beyond question.

From gazpachos to hamburgers to tarts, tacos, pupusas or salmon, applicants try to defend the versatility and qualities of taste and smell of cannabis as one more incentive for menus.

"People should know that there is a lot of freedom when cooking with cannabis," says Cynthia Sestito, another of the contestants.

"When I teach cooking, I don't say, 'Do a little of this and a little of that.' You must really want to accept this whole process and you must feel free," she adds.

In each of the dishes, "Cooked with Cannabis" explains what variety of marijuana they have used and what their properties are: mimosa, sour diesel, dream queen ...

And to avoid unwanted sensory travel, in the recipe they specify how many milligrams of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), the main psychoactive component of marijuana, they have used in each preparation.

As in any other television cooking contest, in "Cooked with Cannabis" there is no shortage of rush, the ingredients that do not appear, some errors on the stove and the countdown to put the chefs on edge.

"Cooked with Cannabis" thus adds to the television offer that has recently dealt with marijuana since normalization and even betting on humor.

"Weeds", "Disjointed" or "High Maintenance" brought cannabis to television fiction, while "Cooked with Cannabis" has a culinary precedent in the contest also for the small screen "Cooking on High".

In any case, these television spaces go hand in hand with the progressive acceptance and legalization of marijuana in countries like the United States, where states like California (the most populous) have not only regulated it for recreational and medicinal use, but have also included cannabis dispensaries among essential services opened during the coronavirus crisis.

Key West - which was the refuge for Ernest Hemingway, Tennessee Williams, President Harry Truman and hundreds of Cuban independence supporters when Cuba belonged to Spain and now is a mecca for lovers of warm winters and relaxed and uninhibited spots - looks like a ghost town.

Although brimming with activity in years past, the main streets of the historic downtown zone of Key West are empty except for a few locals who venture out to get groceries, ride their bikes or take a stroll or run in the open air.

After tourism, one of the hardest-hit economic sectors is the local fishing industry, which - with the closure of restaurants and hotels - has lost two of its main sources of income.

Like other places in locked-down Florida, people may only leave their homes to go to work in essential jobs, buy food or necessary items or exercise.

Many fishermen can barely "cover expenses" because with the plunge in demand the price of their fish has dropped by more than a dollar per pound.

Tourists have been replaced by roosters, chickens, and doves, which have taken over the benches at street side dining spots, the town squares and the vacant tourist attractions looking for - but not finding - tidbits to peck at.

Cuban Jorge Concepcion said that his expenses remain the same but the sales price for his fish has gone down "too much."

According to the latest official tourism statistics, in 2018 the Keys welcomed 5.13 million visitors and the tourist sector provided work for 26,500 people, bringing in some $2.4 billion.

For the past few weeks, the few shopkeepers who have gone into their stores have been doing so to do their accounting or other managerial tasks.

Israeli Erin Brets, who manages a small clothing and souvenir shop on Front Street, one of Key West's key tourist destinations, said that if the Keys don't open up again to tourism "there won't be any business for the next six months."

Brets wants to see economic and tourist activity brought back right away, an idea that some Florida politicians have in mind despite the fact that the state's Covid-19 cases are still on the rise, with some 26,000 confirmed cases so far and 764 deaths.

The situation could get even worse if the meteorologists are right in predicting a more active than normal hurricane season.

Experts at the private firm AccuWeather and at Colorado State University say that between 1418 tropical storms will develop this year, of which 7-9 will become hurricanes and 2-4 will become very powerful storms.

According to Philip J. Klotzbach, a researcher in the Atmospheric Sciences Department at CSU, the Atlantic Ocean temperature in the tropics and subtropics is currently warmer than the long-term average and that is a factor that favors a very active hurricane season.

Hurricanes and Covid-19 will make the 2020 storm season - which runs from June 1 through Nov. 30 - "different," Florida Sen. Rick Scott has warned.

In thinking about the possibility that the storms will force parts of the Keys to be evacuated, Scott - who was Florida's governor before he entered the US Senate in 2018 - is urging people to "be creative" in abiding by "social distancing" during such situations.

Desde el pasado 22 de marzo los Cayos están cerrados a los forasteros, lo que no sucedía desde que el huracán Irma, de categoría 4, asoló la zona en septiembre de 2017.

Murieron 17 personas y más de 4.000 casas resultaron destruidas o dañadas. Desde el 19 de septiembre al 1 de octubre de aquel año ningún visitante pudo poner sus pies en los Cayos, donde el sector turístico da cuenta del 44 % de la actividad económica.

Hoy, como entonces, los turistas brillan por su ausencia. Cayo Hueso, Key West en inglés, que fue el refugio de Ernest Hemingway, Tennessee Williams, Harry Truman y centenares de independentistas cubanos cuando Cuba pertenecía a España y hoy es una meca para los amantes de los inviernos cálidos y de los ambientes relajados y desinhibidos, parece una ciudad fantasma.

Incluso el monumento que a orillas de un mar turquesa marca el punto más meridional del territorio continental de Estados Unidos y recuerda que Cuba está a solo 90 millas (144 kilómetros), una visita obligada para los que visitan los Cayos, está desierto.

UNA CIUDAD DE GALLOS Antaño rebosantes de actividad, las calles principales del casco histórico de Cayo Hueso se muestran vacías salvo por unos pocos residentes que aprovechan para hacer la compra, montar en bicicleta o correr al aire libre.

Al igual que en otros lugares de Florida, solo se puede salir de casa para ir a trabajar en los negocios esenciales, adquirir productos o ejercitarse.

PESCADO A MITAD DE PRECIO Después del turismo, otro de los negocios más afectados es el sector pesquero, que con el cierre de los restaurantes y hoteles, ha perdido una de sus principales fuentes de ingresos.

Muchos pescadores apenas puedan "cubrir gastos,” porque ante la falta de demanda, el precio del pescado se ha reducido más de un dólar la libra (unos 450 gramos).

El cubano Jorge Concepción dice que "todos los gastos" de los que se dedican a la pesca como él siguen igual y, sin embargo, el precio de venta del pescado ha bajado "demasiado.”

Cada diez años, el Gobierno de EEUU realiza un conteo a nivel nacional para identificar las características de su población. De dicha información dependen numerosos programas y recursos para la comunidad. Aquellos grupos demográficos que no son contados e identificados durante el conteo corren el riesgo de perder servicios y representación que los considere y beneficie.

Algunos de los programas cuyos fondos dependen de la información recabada durante el Censo incluyen Medicaid (conocido en California como MediCal), Medicare parte B, Estampillas de comida (también conocido como Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program o SNAP), becas de educación especial (IDEA), Sección 8 de vivienda y muchos más.

A la hora de distribuir fondos federales, o de determinar la representación en el Congreso, los grupos demográficos que no sean contados, no serán tenidos en cuenta en toda la década.

Es por ello que los sindicatos están planeando eventos y acciones específicas dirigidas a aumentar la participación de todos los trabajadores en el conteo nacional.

“Los sindicatos ya de por sí tenemos una muy buena estructura de comunicación con nuestros miles de miembros, probablemente la mejor”, señaló Christian Castro, director de comunicaciones de la Federación del Trabajo del Condado de Los Ángeles (LA County Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO), en entrevista con este diario. y representa a más de 300 sindicatos y más de 800,000 miembros.

Castro describió las acciones planeadas por la federación para crear conciencia sobre la importancia del censo y empoderar a los trabajadores a participar en el conteo.

Castro mencionó el efecto que causó la original propuesta de la Administración Trump de incluir una pregunta sobre la ciudadanía de las personas. Luego de años de batallas legales, dicha pregunta fue bloqueada por la Corte Suprema y no es parte del cuestionario.

veo a otros hispanos, trabajadores o inmigrantes como yo, entonces voy a sentirme identificado y voy a prestar más atención al mensaje”, explicó.

La federación, centro de actividad de miles de miembros, también tiene planeado la instalación de un kiosco en todas y cada una de sus reuniones, en el cual las personas pueden registrarse, consultar, compartir preguntas e inquietudes sobre el conteo y recibir guía y apoyo para completar el cuestionario.

Desbancando mitos Castro contó que una vez que los trabajadores superan el miedo y la incertidumbre nacidos de la falta de información se dan cuenta de la importancia de ser contados.

“Una vez superado el miedo, los trabajadores se abren, hacen preguntas y deciden participar”.

Los temores son muchos y van desde el miedo a perder su vivienda, hasta el de perder su trabajo, su hogar o ser deportados.

“Por ejemplo, en la comunidad hispana muchas veces dos o más familias comparten la misma vivienda y temen que si responden al cuestionario, el propietario del lugar en el que viven pueda desalojarlos. Lo mismo ocurre

entre aquellos trabajadores que viven en casas traseras o que no tienen documentos migratorios y que temen que su información sea compartida con ICE”, señaló.

La Oficina del Censo no comparte la información con agencias de inmigración o de ningún otro tipo. Los datos recolectados son totalmente confidenciales.

Fondos federales La información recabada durante el conteo es utilizada para determinar la distribución de fondos federales.

“Los resultados afectan tanto a sindicatos, como a trabajadores, ancianos, veteranos y jubilados. Un conteo erróneo puede resultar en menos fondos adjudicados a programas, servicios y organizaciones”.

“Este es un conteo de la población, no de los ciudadanos”, resaltó Castro. “Todos merecemos ser contados, todos merecemos ser parte de la conversación. Debemos participar en el conteo por nosotros mismos, por nuestros hijos, por nuestra familia, por nuestra comunidad”, concluyó.

hernobyl - Visitors are given just five minutes to explore Chernobyl's control room four, frozen in time since 26 April 1986 when a series of errors triggered the worst nuclear accident in history.

“It's a place of a tragedy.”

As well as the current tours through the nuclear power plant, Chernobyl is preparing new routes by boat and helicopter.

Before entering the dark and winding corridors leading to the epicenter of the disaster, they must first swap out their clothes for a sterilized suit.

Five water routes and three air routes have been already approved.

DISMANTLING CONTINUES

Ukrainian authorities guarantee the visit is safe and insist that the maximum dose of radiation exposure in humans is 0.1 millisieverts, one thousand times less than what the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) considers harmful to health.

Children, pregnant and breastfeeding women are not allowed to enter the nuclear plant and all visitors must fill in several forms accepting a dozen strict security norms.

Before the tour starts, visitors must undergo a radiation exposure test under the watchful eye of two nurses.

During the entire guided tour, tourists must hang a radiation monitor around their necks.

As they approach the area around reactor number four, punters require a second dosimeter.

Throughout the visit there are a dozen checkpoints with radiation detectors that show the areas that must be scanned.

“The measurements cover practically the entire body, including the face, the back,” Yulia Marusich, Representative of the International Department of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant (NPP), told Efe. It takes only five seconds until the machine reveals the result which reads: not contaminated.

Tourists are not the only ones who every day enter the plant.

At the age of 27, he was the first person who drew up a detailed map showing the radiation levels in the plant.

"For four days and with hardly any sleep we examined both the central and the neighboring city of Pripyat, the urban center was most affected by radiation," Logachev told Efe. The map showed levels of up to 2,500 roentgens per hour in the rooms located close to Reactor 4. Roentgen is one of the standard units for measuring radiation. A level 400 roentgens per hour is considered lethal.

“We worked uncommunicated. Most of the time, almost blindly. The radio stopped working from 1,000 roentgens,” he added.

Logachev’s radioactive map was used by the authorities to justify the mass evacuation of the area, which took place two days after the first security measurements.

Everyone who enters the Chernobyl nuclear power plant is required to wear head-to-toe protective gear, including socks, two pairs of trousers, a shirt, gloves, a cloth cap, a helmet and a mask that prevents people from inhaling radioactive particles.

Ilya Susnov was 25 when he volunteered and worked for two months to build the first sarcophagus around the damaged reactor.

After several years of working in Chernobyl, Marusich knows its maze of corridors like the back of her hand.

It has reduced the level of gamma radiation around the center tenfold and was designed to be in operation for 100 years.

She is responsible for opening any door with a combination of keys, security codes and internal phone calls.

Everything is tightly controlled. A foot in the wrong direction can result in the immediate interruption of the tour.

Objects, like bags or cameras, left on the floors pose a risk of contamination that can require a decontamination process or may even be destroyed.

SURVIVORS AND WITNESSES Only around 1,500 people who witnessed the nuclear accident first-hand are still alive, according to data from the Ukrainian National Chernobyl Museum.

Senior Lieutenant Aleksandr Logachev and Ilya Susnov were among hundreds of thousands ‘liquidators’ in charge of cleaning up the contaminated zone following the disaster.

“I wanted to see it with my own eyes. I was fascinated by the idea of witnessing what had happened,” he recalled.

While working, Susnov was exposed daily to a dose of radiation ten times higher than normal.

Since 1986, he has received a pension equivalent to $11 a month as compensation.

TOURISM, ANTIDOTE TO FEAR Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky wants to reverse the negative image of Chernobyl.

"We have to turn our problem into an advantage," Zelensky said during a recent visit to the nuclear plant.

He has signed a decree to boost tourism in the area to create a green corridor for active tourism.

Chernobyl has always attracted curious people.

The video game series “STALKER”, launched 13 years ago, awakened interest in Chernobyl laying the foundations for its status among tourists.

In the first-person shooter survival game, users are plunged into the zone of alienation around Chernobyl.

In the last 5 years alone, the number of tourists who flock to the morbid grounds has multiplied 12-fold.

The HBO miniseries “Chernobyl”, released last year, sparked a renewed interest in the disaster.

In 2019 a record 100,000 tourists visited the plant, according to the State Agency of Ukraine on Exclusion Zone Management.

The five episodes of Chernobyl "were one of the key milestones that gave us a push to extend the route to the control room number four at the plant," Anton Povar, from the International Department of the Chernobyl NPP, said.

According to Konstantin Vlasov, head of Chernobyl Exclusive Tours, one of the twelve accredited tourist agencies operating in the exclusion zone, about half of its clients have watched the HBO miniseries.

Engineer Vladimir (55), who didn’t want to give his family name, is part of the group of 2,800 operators who still work in it, most of them on the gradual dismantling, the storage of radioactive waste and general maintenance.

He has been in Chernobyl for two decades and the flow of tourists does not seem to bother him.

“I think that people would like to know truths.

They would like to know what had happened here,” Marusich said.

Plant workers are now used to sharing the canteen with visitors.

Everyday employees commute to work by train from Slavutych, a purpose-built town created after the disaster to house displaced people and the liquidators.

On Thursdays, security protocols are reviewed, and evacuation drills take place although reactors no longer operate in the plant.

The plant has not been producing energy since 2000 but remains part of the Ukrainian electrical supply system.

Electrical power supply of the other four nuclear plants and 15 reactors of the country is managed from control room number 1.

Vladimir does 12-hour shifts in control room one.

“This is a unique type of tourism and we assume high risks.

"Many do not know, but from Chernobyl we make sure that electricity reaches all parts of Ukraine," he says as he watches the panels with his two companions on duty.

“As a business, we have to deal with strict security checks, numerous rules and permits,” Vlasov said.

Everything in the room is analog, from the buttons to control panels and meters. They will be completely dismantled by 2065.

Slovak student Mona, 22, struggles to put into words how she feels after the visit.

At the time of the explosion, the four operational RBMK nuclear power reactors were supplying 10 percent of the then Ukranian Soviet Socialist Republic-s energy.

“I feel very strong emotions here, I can't help it. I think everyone should see this place,” she told EFE. “Crying and nervous laughter are common reactions in my tours,” Marusich added.

According to senior lieutenant Logachev, HBO’s series shows things that didn't happen, such as the presence of military with machine guns.

“It is a film, not a documentary,” he added.

Some Ukrainians, who represent around 25 percent of visitors, illegally enter the exclusion zone “for the purpose of extreme tourism”, avoiding all controls.

Marusich thinks that Chernobyl is not a place for extreme tourism.

The plant was expected to expand its capacity with up to eight more reactors and would have become the most powerful in Europe.

For Soviet authorities, the reliability of these kinds of reactors was beyond doubt.

“This very type of reactors, RBMK reactors, they were so safe, they were so reliable that they couldn't explode a priori,” Marusich added.

The explosion released 50 million curies of radiation into the atmosphere, the equivalent of 500 Hiroshima bombs.

The effects of radiation continue to affect the inhabitants of the surrounding areas of Ukraine, Belarus and Russia.
