UNCHALLENGED OPERATIONS NORMS is going on, follow the money.” I did that for some 20 years as a board member (1967-1987), Today, I deal with “United Way of San Francisco Bay Area. Hilbert Morales EL OBSERVADOR A NORM is a pattern of behavior within an organization, or its society; A “NORM” is an accepted unchallenged model. The progressive development of human civil rights would not have occurred without the challenge of certain norms being practiced and accepted as the way we do things here. During the 1930's Great Depression era, too many working-class folks were unemployed. It was the United Steelworkers of America union leaders who bargained (negotiated) for the need to distribute the wealth by scheduling 5 x 8-hour days per two-week pay period. That simple negotiated agreement permitted the available work to be distributed to the maximum number of steelworkers who needed some income for their family obligations and responsibilities. The American society and its business firms accept and practice many operational norms. So much so, that certain local firms will never be staffed in a manner that fairly represents the current diverse population which already lives here in Silicon Valley. Now I served on the Board of United Way of Santa Clara County for 20 years. On the advice of my mentor, Frank Merino, Esq., who specialized in labor relations and sponsored me as a board member, I asked to serve on the fund allocations committee. Frank told me then “If you really want to know what

An established free-lance writer was asked by a public relations person to interview Luis Valdez and his son. The San Jose Stage is a non-profit NGO-CBO located south of First Street in San Jose's entertainment area. Its Director, Kathleen King, verified that Jonathan White was an independent contractor engaged to promote the latest Luis Valdez play under a twoyear contract. I assumed that a quid pro quo (value received equated to value provided) was defined in that contract. And I am assuming that both the City of San Jose, County of Santa Clara, Corporate members of the Leadership Group of Silicon Valley (Carl Guardino, CEO/ President who employ 65% of the local work force; and wealthy individuals all provide funding support. Their leadership needs to know how their underwriting support is utilized. AND ALL THESE ORGANIZATIONS HAVE UNCHALLENGED OPERATIONS NORMS. What that Latina professional free-lance writer unwittingly did was to challenge an operational norm practiced by San Jose Stage, Ms. King, Director/CEO. Ms. King had Mr. White employed as an independent Contractor (working 5 hours per week) to promote that new Luis Valdez play. Mr. White contacted our Latina via email instructing her to interview Playwriter Valdez and his son Kinan. No mention was made nor offered as payment for her services as a professional free-lance writer. When I phoned Ms. King to verify that Mr. White was an I.C., she also informed me

that there was no budget which is why our Latina professional writer was not offered any payment of any sort. That Latina is a former employee of the Social Service Agency, County of Santa Clara, now retired. While working full time, she attended university level coursework at SJSU and finished her college training with a degree from Menlo College. All during this time, Belinda Quesada raised her daughter with sporadic child support from the biological father. She augments her retirement income with earnings from her writing. Some years ago, Belinda did interview Playwriter Luis Valdez that impressed Mr. Jonathan White, the I.C./The Stage, which resulted in that email asking her to interview Playwriter Luis Valdez and his son Kinan. That interview results in crafting a written report worthy of becoming editorial content and of use in promotional efforts plus contacting local Latino publications such as EO (San Jose) and El Tecolote (UCSF). I estimate about 20 person-hours would have been required. Sounds like a part time employee, not as an unpaid volunteer. An important norm in our society is that an individual earns his/her way through life. I can still hear my father telling me to get ready to work so you can contribute to sustaining this family. Non-profits do have budgets which pay their management personnel handsomely. Why was there no line item in the budget to pay a professional writer? When I contacted Ms. King she informed me that there was no budget allowance for this work effort. Am I to assume that promotional materials were obtained at no cost? There is no

difference between non-profits and profit-oriented firms both need to create a surplus which is distributed to shareholders (in the case of profit-oriented firms) or distributed to the community clients being targeted with its services (in the case of non-profits). This clash of different norms is why the working class has been targeted by conservative efforts to take away the collective bargaining done by unions. It may be mitigated by the general public who must earn enough to be a consumer in this American Consumer Economy. Economically, unpaid volunteers make no contribution to the local economy unless their volunteer work is valued enough to be recognized in the project budget. Cash flow is essential to having this capitalistic democratic economy function to the benefit of all. Anything less borders upon exploitation of those who have no power; no authority; no influence. That situation is what motivates some economists to have government distribute a guaranteed annual income to those who earn no income. It is essential to have consumers with a bit of money in their pockets to pay for goods and services chosen and purchased. Two sets of NORMS collided here: Belinda earns her money by writing (her work) all her life she has earned wages for the work done for firms under the direction of supervisors. The Stages’ I.C. asked her to do the work without indicating any quid pro quo (She interviews, crafts editorial content; gets it published) but not as a volunteer (employers cannot demand high quality work products from volunteers who may quit whenever it suits them).

The profit a non-profit firm earns is called a surplus (inferring it made too much money). That surplus is used to produce and distribute more goods and services to its target community. In contrast, the profit earned by a for-profit firm is used to pay executive is a NORM. Also, please understand that this dynamic is being played out in Silicon Valley all the time. How do we get beyond this stalemate? First, we must realize that we need each other; we must honor and respect the different realities. Most of all, we must communicate and negotiate. CA is a free-will employment state which means an individual may choose to work for a firm or not work for it at all. Clear direct communication is necessary. Information needed for making decisions must be presented. Information Technology, especially the Internet, has impacted several NORMS” Display ad revenues and employment ad revenues have migrated to the internet which diminishes revenues realized by publications. As a result, publications have laid off thousands of writers, investigative reporters, copyeditors and no longer publish any news/press releases received. The other reality is that major internet firms have achieved ultra-high concentrations of wealth while exploiting the internet developed using tax revenues paid into the U.S. Treasury by “We, The People” for profit corporations. We must all remain connected if we are to reach a new equilibrium influenced by updated NORMS. It's time to update all NORMS if we are to remain the innovative and creative center the world envies. All NORMS from the manufacturing era must be challenged and updated.

BBB’S 2018 SCAM TRACKER RISK REPORT NAMES EMPLOYMENT SCAMS THE RISKIEST TYPE OF FRAUD One of the most common tactics of scammers is impersonation, where the scammer pretends to be a legitimate business that is well known and trusted by the consumer. The top legitimate organizations that were used by scammers in 2018 were: U.S. Internal Revenue Service; U.S. Government (Treasury, Reserve, Medicare,

Better Business Bureau The Better Business Bureau’s 2018 Scam Tracker Risk Report named Employment Scams as the riskiest form of consumer fraud, according to a new report. The study, Tech-Savvy Scammers Work to Con More Victims: 2018 BBB Scam Tracker Risk Report, recorded more than 50,000 scam reports to BBB Scam Tracker (BBB. org/ScamTracker). BBB analyzed this information using its unique BBB Scam Risk Index to determine the riskiest scams based on exposure, susceptibility, and monetary loss. BBB timed the release of the report to coincide with National Consumer Protection Week and found some significant changes from 2017: • Although online purchase scams slipped to the number 2 riskiest spot, the number of online purchase scams submitted to BBB Scam Tracker in 2018 rose dramatically to 10,450 reports, up 124% from 4,655 in 2017 • 2018 was the first time websites eclipsed phones as the top means of contact for scams reporting a monetary loss • The susceptibility (the percentage of consumers who lost money when exposed to a scam) of being scammed increased by 86% from 2017 to 2018, which is likely due to scammers constantly adapting their techniques • Romance scams jumped from the 11th riskiest scam in 2017 to the 6th riskiest last year, leading to a new BBB report: Fall in Love – Go to Jail Young people continue to be at higher risk for scams, and susceptibility decreases with age, although dollars lost increases when victims are older. This may be a function of the types of scams different age groups are most susceptible to or are targeted by, or it may be related to differences in access to financial resources with increasing age. There was good news in the Tech-Savvy Scammers Work to Con More Victims: 2018 BBB Scam Tracker Risk Report from the BBB Institute for Marketplace Trust (BBB Institute). The overall median dollar loss fell 33.3%, from $228 in 2017 to $152 in 2018. This decrease continued the drop we reported in the 2017 report, which had fallen from a median dollar loss of $274 in 2016. This decrease could be connected to the large number of online purchase scams reported in 2018, which tend to result in a lower median dollar loss. In 2018, BBB added a new scam category in correspondence with the rise of

Social Security, Grants); Publishers Clearing House; Better Business Bureau; and Microsoft.

cryptocurrencies. Most of the BBB Scam Tracker reports regarding cryptocurrency fraud were submitted as investment scams and BBB also added cryptocurrency as a payment type. These scams often involve fraudulent Initial Coin Offerings (ICOs), a type of fundraising mechanism in which a company issues its own cryptocurrency to raise capital. Investors are scammed into paying money or trading their own digital assets when the scammer has no intention of building a company. Cryptocurrency scams also involve scenarios in which investors store their cryptocurrencies with fraudulent exchanges. For the second year in a row, the most common online purchase scam in 2018 were related to pets, with consumers losing an average of $600. The online sale of pets, including puppies, kittens, birds, and other animals, made up 26.2% of the products reported as online purchase scams to BBB Scam Tracker. Automobiles, clothing, cosmetics and electronics rounded out the rest of the top five online purchase scams. Another significant increase was in the category of fake checks and money orders, rising from the 5th riskiest scam in 2017 to number 3 in 2018. Fake checks and money orders ranked as the riskiest scam for ages 18-24 and consumers lost an average of $1,500. This increase reports led to the BBB’s report: Don't Cash That Check: BBB Study Shows How Fake Check Scams Bait Consumers.

5. Advance Fee Loan scam (down from #4 in 2017) 6. Romance scam (up from #11 in 2017) 7. Tech Support scam (no change) 8. Investment scam (down from #2 in 2017) 9. Travel/Vacation scam (down from #8 in 2017) 10. Government Grant scam (no change) Employment scams took over the number 1 spot this year as the riskiest scam in 2018, up from number 3 in 2017. Although susceptibility to employment scams remained about the same, the number of employment scams increased from 5.1% of scams reported in 2017 to 9.1% of reported scams in 2018. This was not only the riskiest scam for three different age ranges (18-24, 25-34, 4554), but it was also the riskiest scam for military families and veterans. Romance scams were the only new scam for the top 10 list of 2018 after finishing 11th in 2017. Romance scams ranked as the riskiest scam for ages 55-64 and had by far the highest median amount of money lost in the top 10 at $2,500. Family/friend emergency scams dropped out of the top 10 to number 13 in 2018, but reported the most median amount of money lost of any scam last year at $3,000.

Even though a phone call is the primary means of contact for all the reports, in the last year, websites took over as the top mean of contact for scams with monetary loss, which means that the susceptibility on the web is higher than phone calls overall. Credit cards have remained the top method of payment from 2016 to 2018 as well, making up 40% of the payment methods used by victims. Regardless of the scam, scammers often rely on the following tactics: • The promise of getting a “great deal” (which is often too good to be true) • Pressure to respond immediately with offers that are time sensitive and prices that “can’t be guaranteed” • Intimidation (for example, “You are under federal investigation”, “You will be arrested within one hour unless you call this number”) • Isolation, which aims to force a decision without others’ opinions Scammers can also be very nice and personable, which can defy “bad guy” stereotypes and make targets more at risk. Scammers are clever and are always adjusting their tactics, so everyone is vulnerable. BBB Scam Tracker is helping us identify higher risks and debunk longstanding myths, but no one should let down their guard. For more information on specific scams and tips on how to avoid them, go to BBB.org/ScamTips. To report a scam, go to BBB.org/ScamTracker.

The top 10 riskiest scams in 2018 were: 1. Employment scam (up from #3 in 2017) 2. Online Purchase scam (down from #1 in 2017) 3. Fake Check/Money Order scam (up from #5 in 2017) 4. Home Improvement (up from #6 in 2017)

MEXICAN TEQUILA BEING MADE TO RESIST CLIMATE CHANGE

EFE

Mexico City - Fine tequila, the symbol of Mexico so popular at parties and friendly get-togethers, is not exempt from the effects of climate change, which is leading scientists to apply their technology to protect the Aztec nation's signature alcoholic beverage. Miguel Angel Dominguez, chairman of the Tequila Regulatory Council (CRT), told EFE Tuesday that distillers both large and small are using the latest science to preserve microorganisms in the soil, care for pollinating fauna, and assure the reproduction and health of agave seedlings. The CRT has established seven laboratories, including some mobile units, to carry out trials of the quality and safety of microorganisms in the soil. Worth mentioning is the fact that the tequila industry's investment in environmental matters over the past 10 years amounted to some $75 million. "By far the most attention is paid to protecting biodiversity and biological plague control," Dominguez said, adding that it appears climate change is increasing the number of pests and blights. Global warming has also impacted the sector with its sharp temperature shifts. However, he said the work goes on every day to improve agave genetics to make the plant more resistant to extreme temperatures. Photo Credit: Wikipedia.org

Distillers are also being trained to make use of the latest scientific and technological breakthroughs.

MARCH 15 - 21, 2019 The CRT has agreements with the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), the University of Guadalajara, the European Union and the Mario Molina Center for Strategic Studies on Energy and the Environment. The Molina Center and the CRT are working together on a Sustainability Strategy for the AgaveTequila Production Chain. The project estimates that the industry's carbon footprint in Mexico will drop 10 percent by 2020 and 25 percent by 2030 from the level of emissions registered in 2014. Also forecast is that the energy consumption of this industry will be down 7 percent next year and 12 percent lower by 2030. Mexico is estimated to have more than 45 million agave plants, which, besides the labor of farm workers, requires a significant participation of pollinators like bats. Roberto Delgado, director general of Mundo Cuervo, the tourism division of the tequila brand Jose Cuervo, told EFE that the industry is undertaking various projects to make it forever viable in all environmental, social and economic aspects. He also noted that the Jose Cuervo Foundation promotes sustainable business ventures with its international contest for the design of sustainable social housing. Agave fibers, wood from tequila-making farms and glass from tequila bottles, among other materials, are used to build homes based on recycling and respect for the environment. And all with the aroma of tequila.

¿Cuándo empiezas a definirte, te limitas no?

Suzanne Potter California News Service

The 3rd annual AARP Community Challenge grant program is taking applications from government agencies and nonprofits now through April 17. Teddy Fang runs the Florence Fang Asian Community Garden in San Francisco, which used a $7,000 grant last year to expand the garden and food pantry.

COMMUNITY GRANT PROGRAM SEEKS CA PROJECTS TO IMPROVE LIVABILITY

SAN FRANCISCO - Community improvements don't have to be big projects to make a big difference in people's lives. AARP is looking for ideas that will improve local neighborhoods.

COMMUNITY

"It was enough money to make a big difference, where they spend the money directly on the need and the community members could immediately see improvements in their lives," Fang said. "It's a very helpful program for grass roots community organizations." Last year, the grant program awarded

funds to 129 projects, including five in California: the garden plus a project to cut down on traffic accidents in San Diego, to promote the bike-share program in West Sacramento, and to teach people in Chula Vista about their local public transit. Fang said the garden and food pantry project provides a place for community members to come together and really connect. "Most of the participants ended up being senior immigrants from China and Vietnam, who are very limited Englishproficient," he said. "But they've found the community garden an important place for them to be able to share their culture, share their traditions, share their food." The projects can address almost any problem, but must be able to be finished by November 4. The suggested categories include ideas to improve public spaces, promote affordable housing or use Smart Cities plans, which rely on data to pinpoint and tackle emerging problems around town.

There’s a lot of talk about overfishing and pollution wreaking havoc in marine ecosystems, but is there less wildlife in the oceans these days?

The oceans certainly aren't as crowded as they used to be now that we have depleted stocks of large marine predators through overfishing, pollution and climate change. Photo Credit: Tom Fisk, Pexels.

Roddy Scheer & Doug Moss EarthTalk

Environmental advocates do spend a lot of time harping about threats to our oceans, but sadly for all of us the facts bear out the concern. According to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), population numbers for the majority of marine wildlife species have declined by half since 1970, with many species down as much as 75 percent. Furthermore, a third of all fish stocks are overfished and one in four species of cartilaginous fish (sharks, rays and skates) are living on the brink of extinction. “Driving all these trends are human actions: from overfishing and resource depletion, to coastal development and pollution, to the greenhouse gas emissions causing ocean acidification and warming,” says WWF’s Senior VP for Oceans Brad Ack. Another recent study by University of British Columbia researchers corroborates WWF’s findings, concluding that the biomass of predatory fish in the world’s oceans has declined by some two-thirds over the last 100 years, and the decline is accelerating, with 54 percent of it occurring in the last 40 years. No doubt these changes are happening partly as a result of overfishing. According to the United Nation’s Food & Agriculture Organization (FAO), nearly 90 percent of the world’s marine fish stocks are either fully exploited, overexploited or depleted. Efforts to rein in the industry in the U.S. and elsewhere have led to more sustainable practices, but bad actors still ply deep sea waters with destructive trawlers and other gear which not only collect more fish than is sustainable but also inadvertently kill many other marine wildlife in the process. There is some hope. Early results of efforts to essentially rope off certain parts of the ocean as “marine protected areas” (MPAs) to let marine wildlife recover are showing promise.

A Center for Biological Diversity analysis of 31 marine wildlife populations found that habitat and other protections afforded them under the Endangered Species Act helped them rebound significantly, with threequarters of endangered marine mammal and sea turtle species increasing population sizes accordingly. “The Endangered Species Act not only saved whales, sea turtles, sea otters and manatees from extinction, it dramatically increased their population numbers, putting them solidly on the road to full recovery,” says the Center for Biological Diversity’s Shaye Wolf. “Humans often destroy marine ecosystems, but our study shows that with strong laws and careful stewardship, we can also restore them, causing wildlife numbers to surge.” Another way to stop or slow the overexploitation of marine resources would be to end the approximately $20 billion in yearly subsidies for harmful fisheries that encourage destructive practices. The World Trade Organization has pledged to set new targets by mid-2019 that would require member nations to reroute any such subsidies toward investments in sustainable fisheries, aquaculture and coastal community development to reduce pressure on fish stocks. But even if such a drastic restructuring of the fisheries economy takes place, environmental leaders worry it may be too little too late. REPORT: BIOFUELS POLICY BACKFIRES, HURTS ENVIRONMENT

Suzanne Potter California News Service SACRAMENTO, Calif. - A new report on the nation's Renewable Fuel Standard shows multiple ways the policy has had major unintended consequences for the environment. Researchers from University of California-Davis, Kansas State University and the University of Wisconsin found that promoting the biofuel ethanol drove up the prices of corn and soybeans - which led farmers to plant a lot more of those crops. David DeGennaro, agriculture policy specialist with the National Wildlife Federation, says that led to the conversion of 1.6 million new acres into farmland between 2009 and 2016. "By taking what was wildlife habitat and putting that into industrial crop production, you release a huge amount of carbon from the soil that has been stored there for decades," says DeGennaro. "You destroy wildlife habitat, and the process of farming sends a lot of fertilizers and soil and other pollution downstream." The Environmental Protection Agency is about to revamp the RFS, as it's known,

and will issue a proposal this spring and a final rule by this fall. Supporters of the existing standard say the higher corn and soybean prices have increased incomes for farmers and that ethanol has reduced U.S. dependence on foreign oil. Aaron Smith, professor of agricultural and resource economics at UC Davis, says he hopes this study will inform the debate over how to fix the RFS - and encourage policymakers to de-emphasize ethanol and promote alternative biofuels, such as those made from grasses, waste oil and waste wood. "Debates within EPA surrounding the Renewable Fuel Standard have been mostly debates between Big Corn and Big Oil, and the environmental interests have been left out," says Smith, "even though by law, EPA is required to account for the environmental cost when it is recommending changes to the policy." The report estimates that the plowing over of virgin land has sent as much carbon into the atmosphere as the annual output of seven coal-fired power plants. Researchers also found the policy has led to the destruction of thousands of acres of milkweed, which is the primary food source for monarch butterflies.

CINEQUEST FILM REVIEW: CLEAN HANDS

Jose Posadas El Observador “Clean Hands”, a documentary from director Michael Dominic, tells the story of the Lopez family surviving off the largest dump, known as La Chureca, in Nicaragua. Filmed over 7 years we are introduced to Blanca and her partner Javier and their 4 young children. Shot in cinema verité-style the documentary captures the day-to-day life of the children, 3 boys and 1 girl, ages 6 to 10, as they scavenge for any items from the massive dump that can be used, sold or eaten. It is an unpleasant sight, to see the severely impoverished, the men and women for whom no other job exists other than living off the waste of others, and the children whose future seems fated to this

miserable, hopeless existence. For over 40 years, La Chureca, has been the municipal dump for the city of Managua, and was the largest landfill in Central America, covering roughly 100 acres – slightly larger than the Disneyland park site. The dump is home for hundreds of families, approximately 1,000 people, about half are children. It is in this context that we see what the family of Blanca and Javier must do daily to survive. Michael Dominic, whose first documentary was “Sunshine Hotel”, came upon the idea to make the documentary about La Chureca after having been in Managua on assignment as a photojournalist. As he began to film at the dump, he met the four children who are the subjects of his film as

well as their mother, Blanca, who becomes a central and controversial character in the documentary. What we witness are the lives of people on the fringes of society. What we eventually see is that the children are no different from other children. They love to play, they are mischievous, they want to learn, they want something better than what La Chureca has to offer them. What we learn is that not all things are as they appear and in the case of Blanca her truth is not always evident and coping with reality can at times be devastating leading to anger, abandonment and uncertainty. The benefit of 7 years of filming this documentary allows the audience to see the transformation from despair to hope. Thanks to an American philanthropist, whom the director originally approached to fund his documentary but upon seeing some of the early footage she instead wanted to do more for the family, the children were gifted a newly built home and land to farm so that their family could escape life in the city dump. The one condition placed upon the family was to ensure the kids go to school. We see the children go from walking barefoot in the dump to being properly dressed for school. Toward the end of the 7 years of filming we see the kids, who upon seeing themselves in that early footage, are ashamed at having once eaten food that others discarded. For them at the early age it was the only life they knew. We see the girl,

Zulemita, celebrating her quinceañera (15th birthday) – something that probably would not have happened had they never left La Chureca. The documentary does not ask the audience to see the film from the perspective of immigration or the environment but one cannot escape the fact that those issues are present, if only in the periphery, and it is up to the viewer to make the connection between what is being shown in the film and what is being voiced in civic discussions here in America. “A person’s work should have a social conscience,” Director Michael Dominic said, “I want my work to reflect that. I want to tell stories that happen in the world. There are many things we take for granted, half the world has too much, half the world has very little. White America seldom gets to see the type of people shown in this film. A goal of the film was to humanize these people.” When asked what he hopes the audience takes away from the film, Michael replied, “that empathy should not stop at the border.” Clean Hands premiered at the Cinequest Film & Creativity Festival and will next be shown at the San Diego Latino Film Festival March 14-24. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on a property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office where the property is located or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property.

The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 1-206-787-2254. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the

scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. PLEASE TAKE NOTICE THAT if the Trustee is unable to convey title for any reason, the successful bidder’s sole and exclusive remedy shall be return of monies paid to the Trustee, and the successful bidder shall have no further recourse. Further, if the foreclosure sale is set aside for any reason, the Purchaser at the sale shall be entitled only to a return of the deposit paid and shall have no further recourse or remedy against the Mortgagor, Mortgagee, or Trustee herein. If you have previously been discharged in bankruptcy, you may have been released of personal liability for this loan in which case this notice is intended to exercise the note holders rights against the real property only. As required by law, you are notified that a negative credit reporting may be submitted to a credit report agency if you fail to fulfill the terms of your credit obligation. If required by the provisions of Section 2923.5 of the California Civil Code, the declaration from the mortgagee, beneficiary or authorized agent is attached to the Notice of trustee’s sale duly recorded with the appropriate County Recorder’s office. ALTERNATIVES TO FACEBOOK who care about what you care about. Customize the look and feel of your network – with coding knowledge needed – then use it as a hub for fundraisers, events, and more. Ning lets you use an existing social profile (Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.) to sign up and join networks. While Ning is far more customizable than many other private social networks, the idea of building a network from scratch can be daunting. While Ning heavily promotes monetization of your blog, website, or social network, you’ve got to spend money to make money; bigger projects can cost $49 or $99 per month. Photo Credit: Pixabay

Shelly Palmer Facebook has been under relentless attack since the Cambridge Analytica scandal in early 2018. Broadcasters and news publishers have declared open season on Mark Zuckerberg, Sheryl Sandberg, and other senior executives at the company. And while not quite ubiquitous, #deletefacebook pops up every time there’s a story about data privacy. The EU has fined them, the US is trying to figure out how to regulate them, and the notion that free services should be absolutely free (as opposed to checking a box on a terms and conditions page that allows the free service to use your data as payment) is gaining traction. Whether or not Facebook deserves the scrutiny it is under is a great topic for another article. Today, I want to have a look at alternatives. If you don’t like Facebook, what might work for you? Is the time right for the reemergence of focused social networks? A Brief History of Social Networks Friendster (a portmanteau of “friend” and Napster) launched in March 2002. It was the most popular social network until April 2004, when MySpace (which premiered January 2004) surpassed it. In July 2005, Newscorp purchased MySpace for $580 million, and by 2006, MySpace not only was the most popular social network in the US, it was the most visited website in the US. Interestingly, Twitter launched in 2006 and tripled in size by 2007 (the year of the first “retweet” and the first #hashtag). Facebook also started in early 2004.

By 2008, it had caught up to and surpassed MySpace by every measure. In 2011, Newscorp sold MySpace to Specific Media for $35 million. Oh, how the mighty had fallen. On the other hand, Facebook just kept growing and growing, which may have motivated Google to launch Google+ that same year. No one ever liked or used it. Google+ will shut down on April 2, 2019. Nightclub or Public Utility? Looking at the historic timeline, one might conclude that Friendster could not adapt, MySpace was arrogant and could not adapt, Twitter was something new and interesting, Facebook was continuously improving, and Google, even with its immense resources and engineering prowess, failed to create a compelling product. Back in the day, pundits and thought leaders liked to ask, “Is ____ a nightclub or a public utility?” The theory is that nightclubs go in and out of style, but you’ll pay for and use the electric company’s product forever. With roughly 2.6 billion users, Facebook is clearly a utility. No digital product has ever been this size. The company has to break new ground every day just to keep from collapsing under its own weight. That said, the public sentiment combined with the political climate has created, at least in a small way, a market for alternative solutions. Current Alternatives Ning lets you create your own social network (or blog, or website) around the topic you care about. Share your ideas, raise awareness, and find people

Hivebrite offers all the tools you need to build, manage, and engage a community. Customize how your interface looks, how users sign up, the information they can display on their profiles, how much access they receive, and which features (i.e., events, forums, messaging, or job board) you enable. Hivebrite offers solutions for education, professional networks, nonprofits, and more. Like Ning, the level of customization that Hivebrite offers is immense and may appear overwhelming at first. Vero is a mobile-only, photo-oriented social network in the spirit of Instagram or Pinterest. Vero’s privacy policy is nowhere near the front of the pack, but what it lacks in terms and conditions, it makes up for with excellent photo management tools. Vero says it eventually plans to charge for the service, but as of today, it’s free. Diaspora has been around for a while. It’s an open source project, so anyone can set up a server. The network is distributed, which is fine for desktop applications and enhancements but makes working with it harder for mobile developers, which is not great news for mobile users. Focused Social Networks There are a bunch of social networks that serve specific communities. These come in all shapes and sizes. Ello for artists, photographers, film people, etc. Minds an open source, privacyoriented network with zero censorship, which makes it decidedly not brand safe. MeWe – Tim Berners-Lee (who invented the www in 1989) sits on MeWe’s board, which is awesome! The

network doesn’t leverage user data to optimize ads, so you see generic ads. Other than that, it has several Facebook-like features. Nextdoor creates a social network for you based on where you live. Want to keep up with the goings-on of your neighborhood? Lost your dog? Looking for a garage sale? Nextdoor has you covered. However, as a colleague once said to me, “Nextdoor is a great way to find out that your neighbors are crazy.” These Don’t Seem Like Good Choices Well, if you don’t like these, there are many, many more. The problem is that almost all of these are pureplay digital products with very little marketing, so there is very little chance that a critical mass of your friends is on any one of them. A Successful Model There are very successful focused business-oriented social networks. LinkedIn, for example, attracts job seekers, as does Dribbble, which bills itself as the leading destination to find and showcase creative work. Work-focused networks are thriving. Which raises the question, “Would a big media brand or a big lifestyle brand have consumer permission to found and run a tightly focused social network?” This idea is antithetical to current consumer marketing ethos, which strives to reach targeted audiences at scale. If you want targeting at scale, you go to Facebook or Google. Either can give you practically everyone in America who fits your target. To be fair, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, and Pinterest can all serve up pretty big targeted audiences. But what if consumers are ready for a new new thing? What if smaller, higherquality, more engaged audiences can self-assemble around a brand? What if consumers are yearning for restored trust, a semblance of privacy, and true transparency? A tall order, to be sure. But if you could leverage a trusted brand to fill the bill, is the time right for the emergence of focused branded social networks? I’m pretty sure the answer is yes. FELIZ SEMANA DE SAN PATRICIO Photo Credit: Pixabay
